- 0:01When people take up the practice of meditation, they
- 0:05generally do not know much about it. They
- 0:08follow a set of guidelines on how to meditate and
- 0:12just let things happen. The result is very much
- 0:15dependent then on their state of conscious awareness
- 0:19and their focus of attention. Meditation
- 0:23is not a state that just allows anything to come
- 0:26with no form or purpose, rather, for it to
- 0:30accomplish its purpose, meditation needs a
- 0:33concentration, an object of meditation. This
- 0:37object of meditation need not be something specific
- 0:39in terms of a result. It can be a concentrated
- 0:43silence, or it can be an aspiration or prayer. It
- 0:48can be a specific issue that the seeker wishes to
- 0:51resolve. Without an object of meditation,
- 0:56the seeker will frequently find that either all kinds
- 0:58of thoughts and disturbances intrude, or else, that the
- 1:03various vital forces within one take advantage of the
- 1:06void and use the opportunity to come to the
- 1:09forefront and move the individual into association
- 1:13with the vital world or domain where these forces
- 1:17have their native seat, or create vital formations that
- 1:22express the vital state of the seeker. Many
- 1:26people fail to realize that there are these other vital
- 1:29domains that have their own existence. The
- 1:33forces that reside there invade and influence our
- 1:36lives in the physical world, but their influence
- 1:39is somewhat watered down due to the density of the
- 1:43physical world and the action of the mental forces
- 1:46that also are at work. When
- 1:49one moves into the vital world at the prompting of
- 1:51one of these vital forces, however, the protections of
- 1:56the physical and mental action are essentially
- 1:58removed, and one is faced with forces that can
- 2:02exercise power in their own right and which take forms
- 2:06that can be scary or intimidating. These
- 2:11forces can appear before an individual in an unformed
- 2:14meditative state if there is the least receptivity in
- 2:18the being to their vibratory pattern. The
- 2:22seeker may actively create these formations if the
- 2:25meditation is simply passive and allows the vital
- 2:28energies free reign to form themselves. The
- 2:32seeker may be influenced by them, or may reject them,
- 2:36or may find that they highlight weaknesses within
- 2:39himself that need to be addressed. The
- 2:43result depends very much on the strength of the
- 2:45aspiration and the awareness of the seeker in
- 2:49confronting these forces. A disciple asks, when one
- 2:54meditates there are moments when one sees very
- 2:57unpleasant forms in front of himself for some days.
- 3:01It begins and later ends. What
- 3:03does it mean? The mother notes, quote, Yes,
- 3:08it means probably that instead of meditating in a
- 3:11silent concentration, one has opened one's
- 3:14consciousness either in a vital domain or in a not
- 3:18very pleasant mental domain. That's
- 3:20what it means. It can also mean it depends
- 3:23on the degree of development one has reached.
- 3:26It can mean in certain cases
- 3:28when one is master of one's concentration and
- 3:32knows where one goes. Still,
- 3:35this already requires a fairly great discipline. It
- 3:38may be that it is a particular attack of adverse
- 3:41forces, of bad wills, coming either from certain
- 3:45beings or from certain domains. But
- 3:49it is not necessarily attacks. It
- 3:52can simply be that one has opened one's consciousness
- 3:55in a place that's not very desirable, or else
- 3:59sometimes, often, that one had in himself a number of
- 4:04movements of the vital and the mind which were not
- 4:07very desirable. And when one enters the silence
- 4:11of meditation, or that kind of passive attitude of
- 4:15expectation of something which is going to happen,
- 4:18all these vibrations which have gone out of him come
- 4:21back to him in their real appearance, which is not
- 4:25very pleasant. This happens often. One
- 4:29had bad feelings, not positively wicked, but still
- 4:32things which are not desirable. Bad
- 4:35thoughts, movements of dissatisfaction, revolt or
- 4:39impatience, or a lack of contentment, or, you see,
- 4:44one may be angry with somebody, even in thought,
- 4:47no need of speaking, things like that. When
- 4:51one is quiet and tries to be still so as to have an
- 4:54experience, all these things come back to him in their
- 4:58true form, that is, not very pleasant forms, very
- 5:03ugly forms, which are at times very ugly. I
- 5:08think that I have already told you this several
- 5:10times. It's something that happens
- 5:11frequently if you don't control your thoughts and
- 5:15your vital reactions, and if someone has displeased
- 5:18you for some reason or other, if that person has
- 5:21done or said something which you do not like, and
- 5:25you consider him hostile, and so the spontaneous
- 5:28reaction is to want to punish him in some way or
- 5:31other, or if one is still more primitive, if I may
- 5:35say so, to want to take vengeance or hope that
- 5:38something bad will happen to him. However,
- 5:42it may even come very spontaneously, a violent
- 5:46reaction like that, then you don't think about it
- 5:50anymore. But now at night, when you are
- 5:53asleep, ninety -tine times out of a hundred, in a
- 5:58case like this, the person in question comes to you
- 6:01with an extreme violence, either to kill you or to
- 6:04make you ill, as though he wished you as much harm as
- 6:07possible, and then in your ignorance you say, well, I
- 6:11was quite right to be angry with him. But
- 6:14it is quite simply your own formation which returns
- 6:17to you, nothing else but that. The
- 6:20person has nothing to do with it. He
- 6:23is quite innocent in the affair. This
- 6:26is a phenomenon which occurs very often. I
- 6:29mean, for people who have movements of rancor or
- 6:32anger or violence, and they always see in a dream of
- 6:36this kind the justification of their movements, whereas
- 6:40it is only a very striking image of their own
- 6:44feelings, for the formation returns upon one in this
- 6:48way. Reference, Sri Aurobindo and the
