- 0:02Speaker 1: Welcome to the Faithful Fitness Podcast for My Dad. Coach
- 0:06Speaker 1: Alex Van Houghten helps you get stronger and mind, body,
- 0:09Speaker 1: and spirit. He believes that your body's a temple, so
- 0:12Speaker 1: taking good care of it is an actual worship.
- 0:15Speaker 2: I should know.
- 0:15Speaker 1: I live with him every week. He brings truth from
- 0:18Speaker 1: the Bible too, from science and stories that will set
- 0:21Speaker 1: your heart on fire. May God bless you to become
- 0:24Speaker 1: everything He made you to be, just one percent better
- 0:27Speaker 1: every single day.
- 0:29Speaker 2: Hey, what's up? I got a question for you. Is
- 0:33Speaker 2: fitness just about burning calories and building muscle or is
- 0:36Speaker 2: it possible that God can use fitness in our life
- 0:40Speaker 2: to minister to our hearts through seasons of grief, pain,
- 0:44Speaker 2: and loss. I think it's the latter. And in our
- 0:47Speaker 2: episode today, our guest Kim Dobbs, mom nurse and fitness instructor,
- 0:53Speaker 2: talks to us about her story with seasons of grief
- 0:56Speaker 2: in her life and how fitness helped her regardless of
- 1:00Speaker 2: her age or fitness level. We're going to talk about
- 1:03Speaker 2: some of the science backed ways that fitness keeps your
- 1:05Speaker 2: brain and body sharp, and we're going to talk about
- 1:08Speaker 2: the practical ways that you can start walking in the
- 1:10Speaker 2: calling God has for your life today through your fitness practice.
- 1:14Speaker 2: Let's get into it. What's up, guys, This is coach
- 1:18Speaker 2: Alex van Houten on the Faithful Fitness podcast. I am
- 1:20Speaker 2: so excited to be with you today. Our mission is
- 1:23Speaker 2: to help you make the most out of the body
- 1:25Speaker 2: God's given you, and I believe that this conversation is
- 1:28Speaker 2: going to help you on that front because I have
- 1:31Speaker 2: an awesome guest, Miss Kim Dobbs. Kim, how are you
- 1:34Speaker 2: doing this morning?
- 1:35Speaker 3: I am well, thank you, glad to be here.
- 1:37Speaker 2: You lock bright eyed and bushy tail. Did you already
- 1:39Speaker 2: get your workout in or like a walk or something.
- 1:42Speaker 2: You look like you're feeling good.
- 1:43Speaker 3: Well, well, no, I'm a little embarrassed to admit this,
- 1:47Speaker 3: but I worked a late nursing shift last night and
- 1:51Speaker 3: I got home about about midnight and I was a
- 1:55Speaker 3: little wound up. Woke up about five thirty and just
- 2:00Speaker 3: to getting my stuff done in the house. So I
- 2:02Speaker 3: have been busy. But I have my workouts. I teach tonight,
- 2:07Speaker 3: so I'm mindful of my time in my body. So
- 2:13Speaker 3: sometimes I don't work out in the morning. If I'm
- 2:15Speaker 3: working out at night.
- 2:16Speaker 2: Man, don't be embarrassed about that. That's actually real life,
- 2:19Speaker 2: real life. I've been a real life here for twenty years.
- 2:22Speaker 2: And one of the things people don't understand about being
- 2:25Speaker 2: a personal trainer or a fitness instructor is that I
- 2:28Speaker 2: have to budget my body's energy and my joints, and
- 2:33Speaker 2: I have to think about who I'm training, what I'm doing,
- 2:37Speaker 2: and in place that in my own personal exercise program
- 2:41Speaker 2: because if I don't, I'm just going to end up injured.
- 2:43Speaker 2: So you you're training a class tonight, correct? Is it
- 2:46Speaker 2: a two class? Yes?
- 2:47Speaker 3: Two classes this evening?
- 2:49Speaker 2: Okay? At two classes? So two hour long classes? Yes, yeah,
- 2:53Speaker 2: that's no joke. So like for most people, that's the workout, right,
- 2:57Speaker 2: But as a fitness instructor, you you jump in there
- 3:00Speaker 2: and whether you've worked out or not, you have to
- 3:03Speaker 2: go be high energy. You got to jump around, you
- 3:06Speaker 2: got to call things out, demonstrate exercises. It's no joke.
- 3:09Speaker 2: It's hard, isn't it.
- 3:10Speaker 3: It is very hard. And I like to play too.
- 3:13Speaker 3: I don't sit on the sidelines. I want to play.
- 3:15Speaker 2: Let me out, man, I feel that. I feel that.
- 3:18Speaker 2: So I had a client session this morning at six
- 3:21Speaker 2: in the morning, and so I'll work out. I'll work
- 3:23Speaker 2: out later today for myself, but it'll only be about
- 3:25Speaker 2: thirty to forty five minutes because my client session was
- 3:28Speaker 2: extremely high energy. I was down there doing push ups
- 3:31Speaker 2: with them and squats and demonstrating exercises and stuff. And
- 3:35Speaker 2: I saw your picture on Facebook with your drumsticks. You
- 3:37Speaker 2: look like a high energy instructor, like you're going to
- 3:40Speaker 2: bring your best every.
- 3:41Speaker 3: Time I try, I try.
- 3:43Speaker 2: I love that. So for our listeners, you're not just
- 3:48Speaker 2: and not that this doesn't matter, but you're not just
- 3:51Speaker 2: a fitness instructor and personal trainer. You're also a writer,
- 3:54Speaker 2: you're a nurse, you're a mom, you're a wife, like
- 3:58Speaker 2: you're you're juggling and balancing a lot of things in life,
- 4:02Speaker 2: and you're very active in your community as far as
- 4:05Speaker 2: I can tell from the outside looking in. And so
- 4:07Speaker 2: I want to ask him, obviously, both faith and fitness
- 4:11Speaker 2: are an extremely important part of your life. How did
- 4:14Speaker 2: God bring that together for you? What does it look
- 4:18Speaker 2: like in your life for God to have said, Hey,
- 4:20Speaker 2: you're going to You're going to walk in the calling
- 4:24Speaker 2: on your life and bring your faith to the forefront,
- 4:26Speaker 2: and fitness is going to be a part of that,
- 4:29Speaker 2: what did that look like for you.
- 4:32Speaker 3: I've always been active. When I was a kid, I
- 4:36Speaker 3: was active. I'm a boy mom. I have three boys
- 4:42Speaker 3: and have always had a lot of folks around us.
- 4:45Speaker 3: We homeschooled, so we had a lot of folks around us.
- 4:49Speaker 3: We were very intentional about our activities. I like to
- 4:55Speaker 3: be active. And as my family aged, as I a
- 5:00Speaker 3: my parents aged, I saw the consequences and the results
- 5:04Speaker 3: of some poor choices. And I also I came to
- 5:09Speaker 3: Christ later in life, at the age of twenty five.
- 5:13Speaker 3: So there I was at a mom, a young mom
- 5:17Speaker 3: with one child at the time, and having to think
- 5:20Speaker 3: about my choices and how I could be a better
- 5:24Speaker 3: set a better example. And I just feel better when
- 5:28Speaker 3: I'm active. I think my parents better, I serve better.
- 5:35Speaker 3: When my kids were young, I would have to wait
- 5:37Speaker 3: until my husband would get home and then I'd go
- 5:40Speaker 3: for a run, sometimes in the dark. I would just
- 5:43Speaker 3: do it when I could. Never been a super early person.
- 5:46Speaker 3: So anyways, and then in our churches and in our communities,
- 5:52Speaker 3: I just see it saw a need for movement, for
- 5:55Speaker 3: people to be moving their bodies, and I think it
- 6:00Speaker 3: needed to be separate. I thought we could we could
- 6:03Speaker 3: do those things together, and we could do those with
- 6:08Speaker 3: our faith and in our churches.
- 6:13Speaker 2: As you're speaking, I had I had a picture in
- 6:16Speaker 2: my mind of Elijah. So, so Elijah battles the prophets
- 6:22Speaker 2: of Bail on the mountaintop right and has this big
- 6:24Speaker 2: wind for God and proves that Bail's not a God
- 6:27Speaker 2: and that God is God. And fire and brimstone raid down,
- 6:31Speaker 2: eat up the altar, right, and so he has this
- 6:33Speaker 2: amazing experience. And then and then God ministers to him
- 6:37Speaker 2: in the desert under a bush. He actually wants to die.
- 6:39Speaker 2: He's he's wore out, he's done, he's he's at a
- 6:42Speaker 2: low place. And God ministers to him and then sends
- 6:45Speaker 2: him on this like forty day hiking journey to come
- 6:50Speaker 2: to the mountain of God and me to hear God
- 6:54Speaker 2: speak to him. And God's not in the earthquake, and
- 6:56Speaker 2: he's not in the fire storm and he's so Elijah
- 6:59Speaker 2: gets to to spend time with God. But the but
- 7:02Speaker 2: it's it's so interesting to me as you were you
- 7:03Speaker 2: were talking there, that picture came to mind, that that
- 7:06Speaker 2: the encounter with God came from a physical journey, a
- 7:12Speaker 2: physical hiking across the desert so to speak to the
- 7:16Speaker 2: mouth of God. And as you're speaking, I was like, yeah,
- 7:19Speaker 2: it sounds like you've been on a journey like that,
- 7:21Speaker 2: where it's like, yeah, you're going to meet God through
- 7:24Speaker 2: through the activities and have a heart for for the
- 7:27Speaker 2: church to do the same.
- 7:29Speaker 3: Yes, I use primary primarily I use Christian music, but
- 7:36Speaker 3: I'm a little edgy with my music still. I brought
- 7:41Speaker 3: into my relationship with Christ some likes and dislikes regarding
- 7:46Speaker 3: music and movement. But I wanted I wanted to honor,
- 7:51Speaker 3: honor that time with God, honoring music. And I think
- 7:56Speaker 3: of all the ideas and thoughts and changes the Lord
- 8:01Speaker 3: put in me while I was walking or running or
- 8:04Speaker 3: working out because of what I was listening to and
- 8:08Speaker 3: changing my mindset. And so I was twenty five. It
- 8:14Speaker 3: was nineteen ninety you don't tell my age here, nineteen
- 8:18Speaker 3: ninety five, and we didn't have you couldn't download music
- 8:27Speaker 3: wells yeah, yeah, And I remember buying a whole bunch
- 8:34Speaker 3: of Christian CDs just so I could see what I liked.
- 8:37Speaker 3: I had to find something I could listen to because
- 8:40Speaker 3: the Lord was telling me what you're listening to now,
- 8:43Speaker 3: it's not any good. We need to change that. But
- 8:45Speaker 3: I already knew what I liked and I wanted. I
- 8:49Speaker 3: wanted something fun and exciting. So music, it was a
- 8:52Speaker 3: huge part of it and part of my movement and
- 8:55Speaker 3: part of my worship and obviously and how I operate.
- 9:00Speaker 2: But yeah, I think that's that's such a powerful thing
- 9:04Speaker 2: to talk about, if you don't mind stopping down on it,
- 9:06Speaker 2: because you're right the From a biblical perspective, music is
- 9:12Speaker 2: one of the ways that we bring worship to God.
- 9:15Speaker 2: There's an there's an entire psalms that are like, praise
- 9:18Speaker 2: him with the timbrel and praise him with the liar,
- 9:21Speaker 2: like depends on which translation of the Bible you're reading,
- 9:23Speaker 2: and get some are these instruments? What is he talking
- 9:26Speaker 2: about with the shout? I love I love the story
- 9:29Speaker 2: of King David praising him while the Ark of the
- 9:31Speaker 2: Covenant's coming in and he's doing flips, you know, and
- 9:33Speaker 2: his wife's like, what is wrong with this guy? But
- 9:35Speaker 2: but you know he's he's praising him with dance and
- 9:39Speaker 2: so so music is a very deep part of a
- 9:42Speaker 2: worshipful relationship with God, and music is also a deep
- 9:45Speaker 2: part of the fitness culture. You know, you're a runner.
- 9:48Speaker 2: It's hard to keep up what one hundred and twenty beats,
- 9:50Speaker 2: one hundred and forty steps a minute without you know,
- 9:53Speaker 2: some driving, some driving beats. And and what's really cool
- 9:57Speaker 2: about the age we live in is there amaze artists
- 10:01Speaker 2: who have taken the high energy aspects of music and
- 10:06Speaker 2: taken some of the really inspirational aspects of music and
- 10:09Speaker 2: and interwoven them with h scripture and interwoven them with
- 10:13Speaker 2: psalms and interwoven them with with Christian themes. So so
- 10:17Speaker 2: I here in my garage, Jym, I work out to
- 10:19Speaker 2: like really hardcore heavy metal. Like if you were listening
- 10:23Speaker 2: to it and you didn't know the words, you're like,
- 10:26Speaker 2: something's wrong with Alex, nothing's wrong with me. They're they're
- 10:28Speaker 2: like yelling scripture in my you know. And that's and
- 10:32Speaker 2: that's wonderful for me because because there was a time,
- 10:35Speaker 2: like you said before, before Christ got a hold of
- 10:37Speaker 2: my heart that was really into like it was heavy metal,
- 10:40Speaker 2: but it was there was no redeeming language, you know,
- 10:43Speaker 2: there was no worshipful aspect to it. It was all very
- 10:46Speaker 2: worldly and and I would say angry, but but that's
- 10:50Speaker 2: you know, when when in my fitness journey. Being able
- 10:54Speaker 2: to take that music and put it under the dominion
- 10:57Speaker 2: of Christ and then and to enjoy that and to
- 11:00Speaker 2: enjoy us in my workouts was was a huge part
- 11:03Speaker 2: of working things out in and heart. While I was moving,
- 11:07Speaker 2: sounds like you had this, So I got to asked,
- 11:09Speaker 2: what are your favorite two songs to work out to
- 11:11Speaker 2: right now?
- 11:14Speaker 3: I like anything by David Crowder. Yeah, I still love
- 11:18Speaker 3: Toby Mack. We there there is a version of Jesus
- 11:23Speaker 3: Freak with Owl City, and I get that going. And
- 11:28Speaker 3: there's other girls my age and the class and say,
- 11:31Speaker 3: you're playing my jam.
- 11:32Speaker 2: That's awesome. That's awesome.
- 11:34Speaker 3: Yeah. So those are some old ones. Those are some
- 11:37Speaker 3: older ones. Let's see what else do I like? There
- 11:45Speaker 3: is some old family Force five that's fun. I like Disciple, Yeah,
- 11:51Speaker 3: some good ones. Brandon Lake. Yeah, I got some good
- 11:57Speaker 3: stuff with with the season that's coming up. I joke
- 12:01Speaker 3: and I'll say, this is the scariest song you're gonna
- 12:03Speaker 3: get from me. But we have we have a drumstick
- 12:07Speaker 3: workout to. I need a ghost, oh man. And that's fun.
- 12:12Speaker 2: That's awesome. That's awesome. Well, so my wife and I
- 12:15Speaker 2: do a lot of work with children's ministry, and U
- 12:18Speaker 2: we believe that the spirit of worship in our church
- 12:21Speaker 2: exists most purely in children, and so we we will
- 12:26Speaker 2: often you know, a lot of the songs that we
- 12:28Speaker 2: worship to with the kids are really high energy, and
- 12:32Speaker 2: we're jumping around and we're dancing and having a good
- 12:35Speaker 2: time and stuff. And I always pray, like, Lord, I
- 12:38Speaker 2: want you to imbue these kids with a spirit of
- 12:41Speaker 2: worship so that when they when they get older, they
- 12:44Speaker 2: don't become stuffy old adults who don't know how to
- 12:46Speaker 2: praise you. You're like, yes, I don't want to be here.
- 12:50Speaker 2: I'm going to worship like watermelon, watermelon. Do you ever
- 12:53Speaker 2: get that church like bubble gum.
- 12:54Speaker 3: Bubble gum water Yeah? Yeah.
- 12:58Speaker 2: So so it's my heart that that, you know, we
- 13:01Speaker 2: see adults praising and worshiping in the same way that
- 13:04Speaker 2: the innocent and pure faith of young kids can do.
- 13:08Speaker 2: And it sounds like you guys do that in your
- 13:11Speaker 2: fitness classes. So when did you become a fitness instructor?
- 13:14Speaker 2: How long have you been doing this?
- 13:16Speaker 3: I've been I started out as a spin instructor. I
- 13:22Speaker 3: loved spin. I can't dance, I don't have any coordination.
- 13:27Speaker 3: I felt a little awkward in like strength training classes.
- 13:32Speaker 3: So when I joined a gym, I just for the
- 13:35Speaker 3: heck of it. Tried a spin class, and I really
- 13:38Speaker 3: felt there's not a lot of attention on you as
- 13:41Speaker 3: an individual, not a lot of pressure to perform any
- 13:48Speaker 3: certain way. You just had to keep moving. Everybody was
- 13:51Speaker 3: concerned about their own self. They weren't looking at you.
- 13:54Speaker 3: And I really enjoyed it. And I joined a gym
- 13:58Speaker 3: and COVID happened, and one fella kept telling me you'd
- 14:04Speaker 3: be a good instructor. Let me train you. So I
- 14:07Speaker 3: learned a little, and then COVID happened, and some instructors
- 14:10Speaker 3: didn't come back. So they asked me to take a class,
- 14:14Speaker 3: the five point fifteen am class. Right, not a morning person,
- 14:18Speaker 3: but nobody else wanted the class. And just like I
- 14:22Speaker 3: don't miss an opportunity to talk, I also try not
- 14:25Speaker 3: to miss an opportunity to teach. So by then the
- 14:28Speaker 3: Lord had already been making a change in me, saying,
- 14:33Speaker 3: don't be fearful, don't be afraid. You don't have to
- 14:36Speaker 3: sit in the corner. You do have something to offer.
- 14:40Speaker 3: That's what I felt the Lord was saying. To me
- 14:43Speaker 3: and our gym had bought some new beautiful bikes with
- 14:47Speaker 3: these awesome computers in them, and they certified us in training,
- 14:53Speaker 3: so I felt like I was a little better equipped
- 14:58Speaker 3: then we had gone. So this was in twenty the
- 15:00Speaker 3: end of twenty twenty and UH COVID was going on.
- 15:05Speaker 2: UH.
- 15:06Speaker 3: My mom got sick and she passed very quickly. I
- 15:12Speaker 3: was working my son's school closes, my youngest son, he
- 15:17Speaker 3: goes to school. I homeschooled the other ones, and I
- 15:22Speaker 3: had gone back to work full time as a nurse
- 15:26Speaker 3: because they really needed us. And my mom got sick
- 15:30Speaker 3: and she she asked me, she said, will you quit
- 15:33Speaker 3: work and take care of me? And I said absolutely.
- 15:39Speaker 3: I have been blessed and privileged that my husband has
- 15:45Speaker 3: the Lord has provided, and my husband has agreed to
- 15:49Speaker 3: it that I keep a rather flexible schedule. He's always
- 15:54Speaker 3: traveled so and he's my biggest fan and my my
- 15:58Speaker 3: biggest supporter and far nicer than I am. But when
- 16:02Speaker 3: I when I want to do something, if you know,
- 16:05Speaker 3: if it's doable and it's and it's in it's right,
- 16:09Speaker 3: he'll do whatever he can. So so when my mom
- 16:11Speaker 3: asked me to stay home, and take care of her.
- 16:14Speaker 3: I said yes, so I quit work and she she
- 16:18Speaker 3: passed eight months later. And there were two things that
- 16:23Speaker 3: I had been wanting to do. I had gotten involved
- 16:26Speaker 3: in revelation wellness. Was very interested in their their approach
- 16:33Speaker 3: and their beliefs, and so I asked him if I
- 16:36Speaker 3: could become a trainer. And that was a gift he
- 16:38Speaker 3: gave me after my mom passed away, and it was
- 16:41Speaker 3: so it was so helpful to immerse myself in those lessons.
- 16:47Speaker 2: Yeah, perfect timing to work through the grief.
- 16:50Speaker 3: Yes, yes, And I had been taking classes at Samford
- 16:56Speaker 3: University and their ministry training tension courses and it took
- 17:02Speaker 3: me six years. But about shortly after that I had
- 17:06Speaker 3: a little more time and I got my certificate in
- 17:11Speaker 3: Biblical studies in women's leadership. And to me, that all
- 17:15Speaker 3: tied together. Yes, it all tied together, the biblical knowledge
- 17:22Speaker 3: and then the fitness. So that was his gift to me.
- 17:28Speaker 3: So it was about that was in twenty twenty one.
- 17:31Speaker 3: My mom passed in April and I was certified that fall,
- 17:35Speaker 3: and I have really enjoyed it. Sometimes it's a little
- 17:38Speaker 3: bumpy trying to find out where I fit. I am
- 17:41Speaker 3: older I am usually off, yes, most times, the oldest
- 17:47Speaker 3: one in my class. They don't call me coach Kim,
- 17:50Speaker 3: they call me miss.
- 17:51Speaker 2: Kimpt I guess, I guess. So I have to tell
- 17:57Speaker 2: you a story real quick. My best client, my entire career,
- 18:01Speaker 2: and she's probably going to listen in on this. So
- 18:03Speaker 2: what's up, Katie? I love you. She's she I've been
- 18:06Speaker 2: working with her for over twelve years, and she's adopted
- 18:10Speaker 2: my kids as her grandkids and whatnot. She's in her
- 18:14Speaker 2: late sixties, she'll be seventy soon, and she is often
- 18:19Speaker 2: the oldest quote unquote in the class age wise. But
- 18:23Speaker 2: what's so powerful about it is is it gives her
- 18:26Speaker 2: such a such an air of authority in the fitness
- 18:31Speaker 2: space because obviously whatever she's doing is working for her,
- 18:35Speaker 2: like whatever she's eating, however she's moving, however she's orchestrated
- 18:39Speaker 2: her life. And I know for a fact that she's
- 18:41Speaker 2: a woman who juggles so many things. But there's just
- 18:44Speaker 2: so much strength and endurance both in her body and
- 18:48Speaker 2: in her mind that she has such an air of
- 18:51Speaker 2: authority over so many people's lives who will come to
- 18:55Speaker 2: her with questions or come to her with concerns and stuff,
- 18:58Speaker 2: and they know that that she's a she's a rock.
- 19:02Speaker 2: And so I'm going to speak that over you too.
- 19:04Speaker 2: What being the oldest in the class makes you a rock.
- 19:07Speaker 2: It's like proving to the world like I'm here. There's
- 19:10Speaker 2: no expenses for anybody else, you know, and like I'm
- 19:13Speaker 2: here and I'm doing my work and and I'm going
- 19:15Speaker 2: to lead you and coach you in that direction. So
- 19:18Speaker 2: I'm sorry they call you miss instead of coach us.
- 19:21Speaker 2: But but I'm just glad they call me. They call
- 19:24Speaker 2: it right there, right and and that's that's so, that's
- 19:28Speaker 2: so wonderful. So so thank you for being that. I
- 19:31Speaker 2: know it's not easy. I know it's not easy to
- 19:34Speaker 2: be that in the community, but thank you for being it.
- 19:36Speaker 2: It's necessary and good and God made you for that.
- 19:39Speaker 3: Oh, thank you, thank you. I was kind.
- 19:43Speaker 2: So so uh, let's one piece of your story that
- 19:46Speaker 2: that's very difficult, and you kind of mentioned it just now,
- 19:49Speaker 2: But one piece of your story that's difficult is that
- 19:52Speaker 2: that God's used fitness to help you work through some
- 19:55Speaker 2: very intense grief. If I was reading your your biocorrectly,
- 20:01Speaker 2: you lost your mother, your mother in law, and your son,
- 20:06Speaker 2: and all three of those are terrible losses. Yes, And
- 20:09Speaker 2: I want to ask first, how has God used fitness
- 20:14Speaker 2: in your life to help you through grief? And then
- 20:19Speaker 2: I also want to ask how you've seen that play
- 20:21Speaker 2: out in the lives of people that you've coached. But
- 20:24Speaker 2: I'd like to start with you, if you're willing to
- 20:26Speaker 2: speak on it, Kim, how did God use fitness in
- 20:30Speaker 2: your life to help you work through grief?
- 20:35Speaker 3: Well? It makes me tired and it occupies my mind.
- 20:39Speaker 3: So my mind I can have those intrusive thoughts that
- 20:46Speaker 3: are a little hard to shake. It's been I suppose
- 20:50Speaker 3: my bio is a little bit misleading. My son passed
- 20:55Speaker 3: away in twenty eleven. He was sixteen. We used to
- 21:00Speaker 3: run together. We had a lot in common. We ran
- 21:04Speaker 3: my best time, which I'm not going to tell you
- 21:07Speaker 3: because it's still a terrible time. My best time for
- 21:11Speaker 3: the Burming the Mercedes half Marathon was when I ran
- 21:15Speaker 3: with him. Oh man, it was my most enjoyable, my
- 21:18Speaker 3: best time, my best recovery. He was twelve in the
- 21:24Speaker 3: half marathon.
- 21:25Speaker 2: Yes, what a monster.
- 21:28Speaker 3: My mother had a fit. My mom was an RN
- 21:31Speaker 3: and he started running with me when he was seven.
- 21:36Speaker 3: And let me say this for young moms working out
- 21:41Speaker 3: with your kids, best time to have a conversation. We're running, right,
- 21:47Speaker 3: he's in his early teens. We're running. We can't look
- 21:51Speaker 3: out of eye, so there's no awkwardness. We're running focusing
- 21:56Speaker 3: on not falling down, and we could have a great conversation.
- 22:00Speaker 2: So I don't know. I don't know if this is
- 22:02Speaker 2: a male female difference, but I do know this about
- 22:04Speaker 2: men because I do a lot of ministry with men.
- 22:05Speaker 2: I do a lot of ministry with children, and I
- 22:07Speaker 2: have two sons, so I'm a boy dad. Men will
- 22:12Speaker 2: have intimate conversations shoulder to shoulder. Yeah, we don't. We
- 22:15Speaker 2: don't want to. We don't want to be sitting in
- 22:17Speaker 2: front of you over coffee eye to I mean, we can't.
- 22:19Speaker 2: It's possible, but you'll get a lot more out of somebody,
- 22:22Speaker 2: especially at a young you know, manchild. You're gonna get
- 22:27Speaker 2: a lot more out of them doing something, and they'll
- 22:30Speaker 2: be way more open, way more honest, way more forthcoming, curious,
- 22:36Speaker 2: all those things. Shoulder to shoulder. That's that's a that's
- 22:39Speaker 2: very well said boy. Mind So, and.
- 22:41Speaker 3: Having said that, with the homeschooling and with exercising together, baseball, soccer, frisbee.
- 22:53Speaker 3: I'm still I will never outgrow frisbee. That is just
- 22:58Speaker 3: so much silly fun.
- 23:00Speaker 2: Such a perfect game, is it not? You know? Yeah?
- 23:02Speaker 3: And no my kids did yeah, uh, And that was
- 23:09Speaker 3: fun to watch sometimes sometimes it was cool if mom
- 23:12Speaker 3: sat on the side and let the kids play. I
- 23:14Speaker 3: didn't always like it, but but I'd sit out sometimes.
- 23:18Speaker 3: But when he passed, there are things that I was
- 23:25Speaker 3: so grateful I did. And that was was homeschool because
- 23:31Speaker 3: just by proximity and by time I knew him so well,
- 23:39Speaker 3: and the and the fitness together. And then we went
- 23:42Speaker 3: on a mission trip six months before he passed, so
- 23:46Speaker 3: to see him serve I mean, those are things that
- 23:50Speaker 3: that I guess if I hadn't had those, I wouldn't
- 23:54Speaker 3: know that I missed them. Sure, But having had that
- 23:59Speaker 3: time with him and those experiences fantastic memories. And just
- 24:05Speaker 3: like we need to know God's character to be certain of,
- 24:11Speaker 3: you know, of what he promises, knowing my son's characters
- 24:16Speaker 3: so well really helped me to process through that loss.
- 24:22Speaker 3: And there was a lot of unknowns. We don't know
- 24:27Speaker 3: how he died, and the Lord said, you will not
- 24:32Speaker 3: know because I knew Justin's character and because I know
- 24:36Speaker 3: God's character. Then I'm not saying I'm okay with that.
- 24:42Speaker 3: I'm just saying I accept that there are some things.
- 24:45Speaker 2: I won't know that you're able to have peace with that.
- 24:48Speaker 2: That's the thing about grief, right, Like you don't have grief.
- 24:52Speaker 2: Grief's interesting in that you can't. And I don't mean
- 24:56Speaker 2: this to sound heady. This is actually a very visceral thing.
- 24:59Speaker 2: You can't you can't place it to the side in
- 25:01Speaker 2: a healthful manner. It's something that has to be worked through.
- 25:05Speaker 2: It has it has to be wrestled with, It has
- 25:07Speaker 2: to be it has to come up in all of
- 25:10Speaker 2: its forms. Right. But but grief doesn't mean that you're
- 25:14Speaker 2: going to to wrestle as intensely your entire life through
- 25:20Speaker 2: through Christ, especially since we we as Christians, we don't.
- 25:23Speaker 2: We don't grieve as the rest of the world grieves.
- 25:25Speaker 2: We still grieve, but we grieve with hope and that
- 25:28Speaker 2: and that there's peace in that. There's there's peace in
- 25:31Speaker 2: the ability to struggle with to wrestle with grief, to
- 25:35Speaker 2: work through grief, and to come with peace. It doesn't
- 25:38Speaker 2: mean that you're okay with everything. It doesn't mean that
- 25:41Speaker 2: that your sunshine and rainbows galloping, you know, happily through
- 25:46Speaker 2: the meadows with no cares in the world. That's that's
- 25:49Speaker 2: not real life. But but to have peace for me,
- 25:53Speaker 2: that's the precursor of joy. If I can have peace,
- 25:57Speaker 2: then I can also find joy in strength and goodness
- 26:01Speaker 2: of God.
- 26:02Speaker 3: Well, and people would ask me, don't you want to know?
- 26:06Speaker 3: Don't you want to ask more questions? How can it
- 26:08Speaker 3: was in our house? He died in our house? How
- 26:10Speaker 3: can you stay in that house? We only moved two
- 26:13Speaker 3: years ago, so we stayed in the house a total
- 26:16Speaker 3: of twenty two years. Walked in and out of the
- 26:20Speaker 3: door where we found his body, and I kind of
- 26:23Speaker 3: felt that as a sort of a kick and Satan's
- 26:26Speaker 3: rear in because he didn't win. He didn't win. The
- 26:30Speaker 3: Lord used it for good. And so you're talking about
- 26:36Speaker 3: the grief process. So it's been fourteen years and this
- 26:43Speaker 3: afternoon I'll go to a grief share group, and yesterday
- 26:47Speaker 3: I went to counseling because I certain things will come up.
- 26:52Speaker 3: We're currently we have we're currently going through some hard
- 26:56Speaker 3: times with my husband's father. He's our only remaining parent,
- 27:01Speaker 3: and he's given us a really tough time. And when
- 27:04Speaker 3: I work as a nurse, I'm an I work on
- 27:06Speaker 3: an Alzheimer's unit.
- 27:07Speaker 2: Oh my goodness. So so you've seen it all.
- 27:11Speaker 3: Yes, yes, but current situations have have just brought up
- 27:19Speaker 3: some things in me. And and so my my grief
- 27:24Speaker 3: share class a wonderful counselor who's who's on call. I
- 27:29Speaker 3: mean I might go months without seeing him, and I'll
- 27:31Speaker 3: call him up and say, you know, can I come in,
- 27:33Speaker 3: or can John come in? Or as my husband, sometimes
- 27:37Speaker 3: we drag my son Paul in. But so with the
- 27:43Speaker 3: fitness and the counseling and the availability of good pastors,
- 27:52Speaker 3: it seems like a long time. Fourteen years seems like
- 27:54Speaker 3: a long time, but it seems like yesterday. And I
- 27:57Speaker 3: don't put a timeline necessarily on on the you know,
- 28:02Speaker 3: the process or the steps. Sometimes I take a few
- 28:06Speaker 3: steps back, but.
- 28:09Speaker 2: Yeah, absolutely one. I think I think that I have
- 28:12Speaker 2: a I don't know why this is a picture in
- 28:14Speaker 2: my head, but I'm going to try to bring it home.
- 28:16Speaker 2: I have a what do we call them a red bud?
- 28:19Speaker 2: It's a red bud tree out here. Yeah, it's beautiful
- 28:21Speaker 2: little tree. Actually, but it likes to. It likes to
- 28:24Speaker 2: grow little sucker trees off the bottom. And every year,
- 28:31Speaker 2: multiple times in a year, I have to go out
- 28:33Speaker 2: and I have to have to find the sucker at
- 28:35Speaker 2: the root, chop that sucker off, because if you don't,
- 28:39Speaker 2: it will it will hurt your tree. It'll keep the
- 28:41Speaker 2: tree from from growing. And in the in the Christian life,
- 28:45Speaker 2: Paul says, don't let any roots of bitterness grow in you.
- 28:49Speaker 2: He says, don't let any roots of bitterness grow. Why
- 28:51Speaker 2: because it hurts the fruit hurts the fruit of the tree.
- 28:54Speaker 2: You bitter, bitter roots bring bitter fruits, and so it's
- 28:59Speaker 2: a it's not just grief. If you've wrestled with addiction
- 29:03Speaker 2: in your life, if you've wrestled with abuse or trauma,
- 29:06Speaker 2: if you've wrestled with those things, it's regular maintenance to
- 29:11Speaker 2: notice when roots spring up, suckers, and you get down
- 29:17Speaker 2: there and keep the keep the bitter roots from growing,
- 29:21Speaker 2: because because the fruit of your tree, of your life.
- 29:24Speaker 2: And I know this meta I'm not trying to carry
- 29:25Speaker 2: this metaphor too far, but Christ said you will know
- 29:29Speaker 2: them by their fruits, and and for for us as
- 29:33Speaker 2: as redeemed disciples, of Christ. I feel like that's that's
- 29:38Speaker 2: a necessary responsibility of maintenance in our life to say, hey, hey,
- 29:42Speaker 2: there's a root right there, let's take care of it.
- 29:44Speaker 2: Let's let's deal with that root. And and a lot
- 29:46Speaker 2: of times that does require us to bring in other
- 29:50Speaker 2: believers who can help us to manage that, to work
- 29:53Speaker 2: through that, to root it out and then move on
- 29:56Speaker 2: with with bearing good fruit in the world. And it
- 30:00Speaker 2: sounds like for me that metaphor makes sense. Does that
- 30:03Speaker 2: make sense to you, Kim.
- 30:04Speaker 3: No, it made a lot of sense. It sure did.
- 30:09Speaker 2: So. So I do want to ask some practical questions
- 30:12Speaker 2: because we've we've talked a lot about kind of the
- 30:14Speaker 2: why in your story, and thank you for being so
- 30:18Speaker 2: about your story, even painful things that that. You know,
- 30:23Speaker 2: there's probably somebody listening to this who's like, Okay, I
- 30:27Speaker 2: I've probably wrestled with some grief. I need to I
- 30:31Speaker 2: need to get some good Christian music. I need to
- 30:33Speaker 2: go work out, like I need to start start moving
- 30:36Speaker 2: my body and stuff. I can't. I can't say I'm
- 30:39Speaker 2: too old, miss Kim. Coach Kim says, I don't care
- 30:43Speaker 2: how old you are, Like, we got to do this
- 30:44Speaker 2: thing so so what when when you teach from an
- 30:49Speaker 2: instructor's perspective, when you teach, what are some of the
- 30:51Speaker 2: questions that that beginners or maybe people who are struggling
- 30:55Speaker 2: to keep this consistent in their life. What are some
- 30:57Speaker 2: of the questions they're bringing to you, and what are
- 30:59Speaker 2: some of the things that you're asking them to do?
- 31:03Speaker 3: Well? I teach such a mixture of people. I will tonight.
- 31:12Speaker 3: My first class is a water aerobics and those are
- 31:16Speaker 3: mainly older people. And then I will go right from
- 31:19Speaker 3: there to a kickboxing class. Yeah, so much fun. We
- 31:24Speaker 3: work out a lot of frustrations. So what I get
- 31:29Speaker 3: a lot. I get a lot is I can't do that.
- 31:33Speaker 3: I'm not coordinated enough. I can't squat that low. I
- 31:38Speaker 3: can't do any more squats. I'm gonna fall over. I
- 31:43Speaker 3: get you know, So my my my thing to them
- 31:47Speaker 3: is that I like to tell them we we are.
- 31:50Speaker 3: We are in a practice here. If a doctor, a
- 31:54Speaker 3: doctor or a lawyer, he calls his business a practice, right,
- 31:58Speaker 3: he's always learning. You want your doctor always be learning? Right, Well,
- 32:02Speaker 3: so we are, we are the same. We need to
- 32:06Speaker 3: keep working on it, and I will I'll be trying
- 32:09Speaker 3: to do something requiring a little balance, and I'll tip
- 32:13Speaker 3: over a little bit. And I said, look at that.
- 32:15Speaker 3: I straightened myself back up, fixed my form, and I said,
- 32:18Speaker 3: every time you tip over a little bit or have
- 32:21Speaker 3: to put your other foot down, you have just strengthened
- 32:24Speaker 3: yourself real big about We talk a lot about function,
- 32:32Speaker 3: about mobility and mobility and preventing injury. We like to
- 32:38Speaker 3: add an everyday movement to something I'm teaching, Like we're reaching,
- 32:46Speaker 3: I'm getting something off my closet shelf. I want to
- 32:50Speaker 3: be able to reach for this, you know, and then
- 32:53Speaker 3: we're just gonna grab it and smash it on our knee.
- 32:55Speaker 3: But we're able to reach, getting down on the floor,
- 33:01Speaker 3: you know, and being able to get up. If it's
- 33:03Speaker 3: my older folks, we need to be able to play
- 33:06Speaker 3: on the floor with our grandkids. Absolutely, you need this
- 33:13Speaker 3: is this is This is really silly. But sometimes what
- 33:16Speaker 3: if you got to get away from something in a hurry,
- 33:18Speaker 3: What if you got to get underneath something? You know,
- 33:22Speaker 3: we need to be able to duck. We do like
- 33:25Speaker 3: Bob and weave when we're boxing, Yes, even sideways as
- 33:29Speaker 3: a squad carrying a load, I said, grab, grab something
- 33:33Speaker 3: a little bit heavier. When we go to grab our weights,
- 33:36Speaker 3: I said, think about grabbing something a little bit heavier.
- 33:40Speaker 3: We're going to be mindful of how that feels. But
- 33:43Speaker 3: I said, what if we just you know, get some
- 33:45Speaker 3: good posture and we hold something heavy and we walk
- 33:48Speaker 3: across that room and that way when you're bringing in
- 33:51Speaker 3: your groceries or you're you know, you're helping something around
- 33:56Speaker 3: the house, you know, helping your husband lift something. I
- 33:58Speaker 3: do a lot of lifting. We se right, but you know,
- 34:02Speaker 3: I want to be able to do that. We want
- 34:04Speaker 3: to be able to do that, and I want the
- 34:07Speaker 3: young people to know that there these are healthy practices
- 34:12Speaker 3: now that will make them feel better later. And I
- 34:17Speaker 3: think right now it's very important that we are mindful
- 34:23Speaker 3: of what we can do for ourselves to prevent needing
- 34:30Speaker 3: too much care later. Yeah, that makes sense.
- 34:34Speaker 2: Well, so I want to stop down on that. I
- 34:36Speaker 2: think that's so important. And you can speak about that
- 34:38Speaker 2: with authority as a nurse, because you see, you see
- 34:43Speaker 2: things that happen to individuals when their capacity for independence degenerates.
- 34:49Speaker 2: And the research is very clear. We don't exactly know
- 34:54Speaker 2: all the causes of Alzheimer's, but we do know what
- 34:58Speaker 2: helps and we also know what is inversely correlated, meaning
- 35:03Speaker 2: if you do these things, you have a very very
- 35:05Speaker 2: low risk of Alzheimer's, and if you do have Alzheimer's,
- 35:07Speaker 2: your risk of losing all of your capacity to walk,
- 35:11Speaker 2: for instance, you can actually you can actually keep that
- 35:15Speaker 2: from happening to you, right, And these are neurological functions.
- 35:19Speaker 2: As you were speaking, I was thinking about how in
- 35:21Speaker 2: youth we take for granted all the things that our
- 35:25Speaker 2: body can do without us having to think about it, right,
- 35:29Speaker 2: And that's such a wonderful blessing, Like I'm so glad
- 35:32Speaker 2: my ten year old doesn't have to worry about being
- 35:35Speaker 2: able to bend over and tie his shoes without hurting
- 35:37Speaker 2: his back. You know, it'd be a terrible world if
- 35:40Speaker 2: all the kids suffered in the same day that somebody
- 35:43Speaker 2: in their fifties or sixties might who is taking for
- 35:46Speaker 2: granted bending down and tying shoes. Right, But at the
- 35:48Speaker 2: same time, in youth, we have the opportunity to learn
- 35:52Speaker 2: how to train those things so that we can continue
- 35:57Speaker 2: enjoying those things in the ages where we don't get
- 36:00Speaker 2: to take that branded anymore. As we say, you don't
- 36:03Speaker 2: use it, you lose it, right, and the neurological process
- 36:07Speaker 2: is age related. Cyclopedia after age thirty, you're going to
- 36:11Speaker 2: lose muscle tissue every year you don't train it. That's
- 36:14Speaker 2: just a fact. Super sorry. And then similarly, our neurological system,
- 36:19Speaker 2: our brain, our spine, talking to our muscles. As you said, coordination,
- 36:24Speaker 2: We will lose the ability to do different things if
- 36:28Speaker 2: we don't train them. But the good news is God
- 36:31Speaker 2: made our body such that it's trainable, it's adapt if
- 36:34Speaker 2: you practice these things. I'm working with a guy right now.
- 36:37Speaker 2: When we first started working together, he's in his mid sixties.
- 36:41Speaker 2: When we first started working together, he could not walk
- 36:43Speaker 2: down my driveway forty yards. He couldn't walk down my
- 36:46Speaker 2: driveway without significant pain. And then he had accumulated this
- 36:50Speaker 2: movement pattern where he was shuffling his feet. Do you
- 36:53Speaker 2: know what I'm talking about, where you drag your heels
- 36:55Speaker 2: rather than push off your toe when you look forward. Okay,
- 37:00Speaker 2: that's actually correlated with Alzheimer's. By the way, when you
- 37:02Speaker 2: start shuffling your feet, that's actually a decent symptom that
- 37:06Speaker 2: your neurological system is tending toward dementia, which is not good.
- 37:10Speaker 2: And so we've been working together for two years. He
- 37:14Speaker 2: can squat. Now, he can row, he can put his
- 37:17Speaker 2: hands over his head, he can hike three miles, right.
- 37:20Speaker 3: That's great.
- 37:21Speaker 2: Yeah, it's so. It's so wonderful. It's so wonderful. And
- 37:24Speaker 2: what he would tell you is he thought all of
- 37:27Speaker 2: that was out of his he couldn't do it anymore.
- 37:30Speaker 2: Like two years ago, he would have said, no, I
- 37:32Speaker 2: can't do those things anymore. I can't do this. I
- 37:34Speaker 2: can't do that. You know, there's too much pain. My
- 37:36Speaker 2: body doesn't work that way. I can't move. And now
- 37:40Speaker 2: after practicing, and I mean he's not like jumping over
- 37:42Speaker 2: small toddlers in a single bound or anything, but he's
- 37:46Speaker 2: seen significant improvements in his coordination and his strength. And
- 37:51Speaker 2: what's so cool as the world got a lot bigger, right, yes,
- 37:55Speaker 2: Like it's not just your house and the one place
- 37:57Speaker 2: you drive to, the world gets a lot bigger. It's like, Hey,
- 38:00Speaker 2: I can go for a hike, I can go fishing.
- 38:03Speaker 2: I can get in the floor with my grandkid. He
- 38:05Speaker 2: didn't have a grandkid two years ago. Now he does.
- 38:08Speaker 2: He's like, I can hold my grandkid and it doesn't hurt. Great,
- 38:10Speaker 2: it's so good. Yeah, and so and so it's so
- 38:14Speaker 2: it's so powerful what you're saying that that whether you're
- 38:19Speaker 2: old or young the idea and old's a relative term.
- 38:22Speaker 2: I hate saying that. I like to think of it
- 38:24Speaker 2: as an older and I think of it as an
- 38:26Speaker 2: energy wisdom spectrum. You trade the energy of youth for
- 38:30Speaker 2: the wisdom of of not youth. And but but you,
- 38:34Speaker 2: that doesn't mean you get to break down, though. You
- 38:36Speaker 2: have the opportunity to take the body God's given you
- 38:40Speaker 2: and to train it. It takes some intentionality, kind of
- 38:43Speaker 2: like the Bitter Roots. They take intentionality Christian walk too,
- 38:49Speaker 2: but it takes intentionality. But if you do it, the
- 38:51Speaker 2: body adapts, and it's just amazing. It's amazing. So bless you,
- 38:55Speaker 2: and thank you for what you're doing with individuals to
- 38:58Speaker 2: do that, and and for for just speaking that, like, hey,
- 39:01Speaker 2: you don't have to be able to jump in this class,
- 39:04Speaker 2: but I want you to be able to pick up
- 39:05Speaker 2: your groceries. That's non negotiable.
- 39:07Speaker 3: Yes, yes, we've got When we do a hip hinge,
- 39:10Speaker 3: we're stepping over the dog gate, you know, at the
- 39:15Speaker 3: dog gate. Yeah, and we could do a hinge where
- 39:17Speaker 3: we're pushing the car door shut with our with our
- 39:20Speaker 3: backside because yeah, yeah.
- 39:23Speaker 2: Well, the vast majority of injuries don't happen in a workout.
- 39:26Speaker 2: They don't like if you're doing a workout safely. It's
- 39:29Speaker 2: a practice, you know. I'm intentional. I'm thinking about the
- 39:32Speaker 2: injuries happen in everyday life when we try to do
- 39:36Speaker 2: something that either we weren't prepared to do, we shouldn't
- 39:39Speaker 2: have done yet, or have lost the ability to do
- 39:41Speaker 2: but we didn't know.
- 39:42Speaker 3: Yeah, well that's what we say too. We're working out
- 39:46Speaker 3: in here so that out there we you know, we're
- 39:50Speaker 3: better capable and we caught we we you know we Yeah,
- 39:54Speaker 3: I think you said you use the word opportunity. Yeah,
- 39:57Speaker 3: and we we like to say it's our get to
- 40:00Speaker 3: I don't have to be here, and I'll I don't
- 40:03Speaker 3: care how big my class is. I'll tell them I said,
- 40:06Speaker 3: I am you didn't have to be here, you know,
- 40:09Speaker 3: I am so glad that you came. I'm humbled. I
- 40:14Speaker 3: am humbled every time somebody comes to my class because
- 40:18Speaker 3: I am I am so flawed. I mess up a lot.
- 40:22Speaker 3: I'm you know, not as seasoned as some of the
- 40:25Speaker 3: as the some of the other instructors. But I'm just
- 40:30Speaker 3: real honest with them, you know, like, I'm sorry, I
- 40:34Speaker 3: screwed that up. We were doing this fun little squat
- 40:37Speaker 3: thing where we were going in a circle. We were
- 40:39Speaker 3: doing a tobata and oh, some of them loved it,
- 40:42Speaker 3: some of them hated it. Somebody never heard of it.
- 40:44Speaker 2: What is that style?
- 40:47Speaker 3: I know, Yeah, but that's another thing. We try different
- 40:52Speaker 3: We try different things. I think, as well as the
- 40:56Speaker 3: physical part of it, I just think that learning new
- 40:59Speaker 3: things keeps your brain sharp and it staves off that
- 41:04Speaker 3: that memory decline, that cognitive thing. So when I work
- 41:10Speaker 3: as a nurse, the reason I like memory care and
- 41:16Speaker 3: assisted living it's more relational. I've always done long term
- 41:20Speaker 3: care and it seems like it's just a lot of
- 41:23Speaker 3: pushing meds. But in this, the facility I've been at
- 41:27Speaker 3: now for about eleven years, it's more relational and I
- 41:33Speaker 3: get to spend more time talking with people and learning
- 41:36Speaker 3: about them. I love that. But once a month on
- 41:42Speaker 3: Sunday after church, my husband goes with me and when
- 41:46Speaker 3: we exercise with them, and and they they love it. Yes,
- 41:51Speaker 3: you get some drumsticks out and they they love it.
- 41:56Speaker 3: They love to move, they love the music. We might
- 41:59Speaker 3: just be sitting in our chair, but we're dancing.
- 42:02Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, and it's nice. We had my my youngest
- 42:07Speaker 2: he's six now, but when he was three, we were
- 42:11Speaker 2: going through uh, my my nana, well it was my
- 42:15Speaker 2: wife's grandmother, but we all called her nana. She she
- 42:19Speaker 2: went to assisted care for dementia for a time after
- 42:22Speaker 2: her husband passed. And uh, and we spent a lot
- 42:26Speaker 2: of time there, would go and and but but you know,
- 42:28Speaker 2: get a three year old and an assisted care place,
- 42:30Speaker 2: like he's he doesn't sit still, No, he's all over
- 42:33Speaker 2: the place, right, So.
- 42:34Speaker 3: They probably liked it.
- 42:36Speaker 2: They loved it. Yeah, he was the life of the party. Yeah.
- 42:39Speaker 2: He would bring balloons and blow him up and then
- 42:42Speaker 2: like he'd run around hitting it, and then like everybody
- 42:45Speaker 2: would join in. Here. You had like a like so
- 42:47Speaker 2: much funny ladies and dudes like hitting the thing waiting
- 42:51Speaker 2: for him to hit it back to him, and like
- 42:53Speaker 2: like it was like they were all exercising men. There
- 42:55Speaker 2: were squatting and standing and reaching and all kinds of stuff.
- 42:58Speaker 2: And I was like, man, lookt him go, he's running
- 43:01Speaker 2: his own exercise class. You don't even know it.
- 43:04Speaker 3: How about a little bit of movement will make anybody
- 43:09Speaker 3: feel better.
- 43:09Speaker 2: Yes, you know, exactly right, that's exactly right. It just
- 43:14Speaker 2: God made us that way. God made us embodied, embodied people.
- 43:18Speaker 2: You know, Jesus. Jesus's ministry was moving all the time.
- 43:22Speaker 2: He was always going from place to place. He wasn't
- 43:24Speaker 2: just sitting on a chair somewhere and everybody coming through.
- 43:27Speaker 2: He was always moving, walking on water and walking to
- 43:31Speaker 2: Samaria and walking up the mountain, you know. And that
- 43:36Speaker 2: I believe. Obviously I'm biased, but I believe that that ministry,
- 43:42Speaker 2: the ministry of today, especially with so many advances in
- 43:45Speaker 2: technology and people being so stuck in the virtual world,
- 43:49Speaker 2: that that the ministry of today has to be embodied,
- 43:52Speaker 2: that has to incorporate the body, the body of individuals
- 43:57Speaker 2: so that they can feel it, they can see it,
- 43:59Speaker 2: they can and they can reap the benefit in the
- 44:02Speaker 2: body and not be separated from that. I think it's
- 44:06Speaker 2: extremely important today.
- 44:08Speaker 3: And it's not that's a discussion we've been having at
- 44:11Speaker 3: Revelation Wellness lately is about fitness in the church or
- 44:19Speaker 3: or talk of the body in the church. A lot
- 44:23Speaker 3: of people don't want to talk about that. In the
- 44:26Speaker 3: church setting. On Tuesday mornings, I teach a Bible study,
- 44:30Speaker 3: and we go in thirty minutes early just for a
- 44:34Speaker 3: little bit of movement. And sometimes it's just walking around
- 44:38Speaker 3: the gym. Sometimes it's a little stretching. Sometimes we get
- 44:42Speaker 3: out our drumsticks. But it's a really nice way to
- 44:45Speaker 3: start a Bible study.
- 44:46Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, I do the same when when I'm ministering
- 44:51Speaker 2: with men, oftentimes they meet me at the park, don't
- 44:55Speaker 2: eat breakfast. We're going to be fastest, And they're like, wait,
- 44:58Speaker 2: can't we just go to breakfast. I'm like, no, We've
- 45:00Speaker 2: had plenty to eat. We're gonna we're going to fast
- 45:02Speaker 2: and pray together.
- 45:04Speaker 3: I love that. I listen, you said that in a
- 45:06Speaker 3: podcast I listened to. It might have been with the
- 45:09Speaker 3: one Yeah, but you had said come fasted, and I
- 45:16Speaker 3: was just thinking about it. I guess we were talking
- 45:19Speaker 3: about you were talking about food in itself. Everything does
- 45:22Speaker 3: not have to revolve real food.
- 45:24Speaker 2: Sure does not. Sure does not. In fact, uh Christ
- 45:27Speaker 2: said this is my body broken for you, like like
- 45:31Speaker 2: he's he's the sustenance. And that's the thing. You know,
- 45:34Speaker 2: I don't need to talk about fasting here, although I've
- 45:36Speaker 2: done some done some work on it and make sure
- 45:38Speaker 2: that that my community understands the heart and spirit of fasting,
- 45:42Speaker 2: but but as a as a body, when we learn
- 45:46Speaker 2: how to hunger for the right things, he said, blessed
- 45:48Speaker 2: those who hunger and thirst righteousness, for they shall be
- 45:52Speaker 2: filled right in our day and age. It's it's so
- 45:54Speaker 2: easy to fill that hunger with all kinds of other stuff,
- 45:58Speaker 2: Like we can we can fill that hunger with mindless scrolling.
- 46:02Speaker 2: We can fill that hunger with video games and movies,
- 46:04Speaker 2: and we can fill that hunger with with potato chips,
- 46:07Speaker 2: you know, like we can fill that with so many things.
- 46:09Speaker 2: But what's cool. I love this for men and men
- 46:12Speaker 2: and women's bodies are different, but but I love this
- 46:15Speaker 2: with men specifically. Look, if you have a problem and
- 46:18Speaker 2: we're going to work it out together and we're going
- 46:19Speaker 2: to seek God together, We're going to be hungry while
- 46:21Speaker 2: we do it. We're jointly going to be hungry for
- 46:24Speaker 2: the right thing, so that so that we can we
- 46:26Speaker 2: can do that thing with our with our whole heart
- 46:29Speaker 2: and our whole mind. It's it's always been kind of
- 46:32Speaker 2: strange to me to sit down in front of somebody
- 46:34Speaker 2: at breakfast talking about a problem. Oh, you stuff your face.
- 46:38Speaker 2: It's like, what like this is a problem, but I
- 46:40Speaker 2: feel very satisfied and satiated in this moment. Isn't bacon
- 46:45Speaker 2: so tasty? Like what I feel like, We're not uncomfortable
- 46:48Speaker 2: enough here to deal with the issue.
- 46:49Speaker 3: You're oh, oh, that is so good. We need to
- 46:52Speaker 3: be comfortable being uncomfortable. We need to normalize some suffering.
- 46:57Speaker 2: I think, Amen, that is so good. Yeah, that was James, right,
- 47:02Speaker 2: Take joy, dear brothers, when you face trials and many kinds,
- 47:05Speaker 2: for suffering produces endurance and character and hope. Actually, I
- 47:10Speaker 2: think I melded Romans five and j But they're saying
- 47:13Speaker 2: the same thing, like Paul and James are saying with
- 47:15Speaker 2: the same spirit, like it's okay, It's okay to be uncomfortable.
- 47:19Speaker 2: It's ok to in fact, in fact, some of that
- 47:21Speaker 2: is part of the maturation process of a disciple, is
- 47:25Speaker 2: to go through some hard things.
- 47:27Speaker 3: Yes, Romans. One of the verses that kind of our
- 47:33Speaker 3: family embraced was Romans at eighteen, where I consider these
- 47:38Speaker 3: present trials nothing compared to the glory revealed in Christ Jesus,
- 47:42Speaker 3: Amen and Isaiah sixty one to three about beauty for ashes,
- 47:49Speaker 3: and you know, there's just something so much better for us,
- 47:53Speaker 3: and if we would just be patient and rely on
- 47:58Speaker 3: God in those tough times and get to know him,
- 48:02Speaker 3: get to know him. After my son passed away, I
- 48:05Speaker 3: could not get enough of the scriptures. Just before twenty
- 48:10Speaker 3: twenty is when I went through training to be a
- 48:12Speaker 3: precept instructor. It's an abductive form of Bible study, and
- 48:18Speaker 3: it essentially you use the word to explain the word
- 48:23Speaker 3: you don't. There's not Maybe when you get way into
- 48:26Speaker 3: the study, they suggest you can look at a commentary
- 48:30Speaker 3: if you want to, But by then you are so
- 48:34Speaker 3: consumed with the cross references and the context, and you
- 48:38Speaker 3: know the literal meaning of the word and not my
- 48:42Speaker 3: own thoughts. By then, I've let the Holy Spirit reveal
- 48:45Speaker 3: to me truth. I don't need to know what man
- 48:48Speaker 3: has to say.
- 48:48Speaker 2: Then, yes, you know, there was a there was a
- 48:51Speaker 2: time in my life where I would have told you,
- 48:53Speaker 2: if you pin me down, I would have told you
- 48:54Speaker 2: I was an atheist. I wasn't a militant atheist. I
- 48:58Speaker 2: was I was somebody who believed that faith was. The
- 49:02Speaker 2: short way to put it is is that that faith
- 49:04Speaker 2: was beautiful, but it was naive and so so for me,
- 49:07Speaker 2: you know, I didn't want to attack anybody's faith, but
- 49:10Speaker 2: for me, I couldn't. I couldn't wrap my head around
- 49:13Speaker 2: you know, big Man in the sky and so so.
- 49:15Speaker 2: And obviously that's not how I feel or think now,
- 49:18Speaker 2: but I remember there was a time in my life,
- 49:20Speaker 2: even even with that belief, that when I picked up
- 49:23Speaker 2: scripture and I stopped listening no offense to the peace
- 49:27Speaker 2: the pastors or preachers. I stopped listening to sermons and
- 49:31Speaker 2: I just read about Jesus. Yes, and I'm going to
- 49:36Speaker 2: get a little emotional talking about this, But when when
- 49:38Speaker 2: I got to where I could, I could, I could
- 49:41Speaker 2: read it, and it was like I could, I could
- 49:43Speaker 2: taste the salty air while he was he was teaching,
- 49:47Speaker 2: and I could. I could hear his voice and I could,
- 49:48Speaker 2: I could, I could picture the love and intention in
- 49:53Speaker 2: his eyes when he's like, hey, I just want you
- 49:55Speaker 2: to follow me, Like that's all I want from you,
- 49:58Speaker 2: That's why I've done this. And he came to life
- 50:02Speaker 2: for me in such a powerful way that it was
- 50:05Speaker 2: so uh, it was so deep and true. That I
- 50:11Speaker 2: had heard so many other things from so many other
- 50:13Speaker 2: people about who God was and how he did things
- 50:16Speaker 2: and blah, blah blah, and what to think about this?
- 50:18Speaker 2: And and I had read scripture and thought of it
- 50:21Speaker 2: like a like a like an action plann or instruction booklet. Right,
- 50:26Speaker 2: but but the Holy Spirit uses the word of God
- 50:31Speaker 2: to bring him to life every well, with every word.
- 50:36Speaker 2: He can literally bring it to life with with every word.
- 50:39Speaker 2: And if you'll, if you'll read, I had a had
- 50:42Speaker 2: a friend of mine I was leading through this process
- 50:44Speaker 2: who's who's come to come to Christ since then, which
- 50:47Speaker 2: which is so makes me so happy. But I was like, hey,
- 50:51Speaker 2: I need you to get a Bible that doesn't have
- 50:54Speaker 2: study notes and doesn't have the headings, and just to
- 50:58Speaker 2: read what it says. Just read it, just think about it,
- 51:02Speaker 2: just pray about it. Not that those things are bad.
- 51:04Speaker 2: Sometimes those are really helpful things to teach you what
- 51:07Speaker 2: to how to understand Greek words and that sort of thing, right, right,
- 51:10Speaker 2: But don't make this such a heady thing. I ask
- 51:14Speaker 2: God to show you who Jesus is and then go
- 51:18Speaker 2: from there. And it was a powerful experience for him,
- 51:21Speaker 2: as it was for me too. So thank you for
- 51:25Speaker 2: being a part of Precepts ministries. It's actually a I
- 51:29Speaker 2: remember it from when my mom was like like in
- 51:32Speaker 2: her early twenties. Yep, going through precepts. Minister. It's such
- 51:35Speaker 2: a colored pencils with her colored pencils.
- 51:38Speaker 3: Yes. So when I came to Christ that I mentioned
- 51:42Speaker 3: when I was twenty five and I was not a believer.
- 51:45Speaker 3: My husband's from Georgia. I'm from Michigan. His family sends
- 51:49Speaker 3: him up up to Michigan or well, he goes up
- 51:53Speaker 3: there for some training. He's there for five years, and
- 51:55Speaker 3: he meets me. I'm divorced, I smoke. I'm from Michigan.
- 52:01Speaker 3: His parents say, don't bring back, no Yankee. Wife brings
- 52:07Speaker 3: me back and she introduces me to Precept. I'm not
- 52:14Speaker 3: at all what she wanted for her son, but she
- 52:17Speaker 3: welcomed me and she loved me. She loved me so well.
- 52:23Speaker 3: And my husband introduced me to Christ. My mother in
- 52:26Speaker 3: law led me to Christ and introduced me to Precept.
- 52:33Speaker 3: So I was twenty five when I started taking it,
- 52:35Speaker 3: and I was fifty fifty two when I became an instructor.
- 52:42Speaker 2: That's awesome. That's awesome. A test to the power of
- 52:46Speaker 2: a strong, loving woman's faith to umbrella another young woman.
- 52:52Speaker 2: And then also it looks like you get to you
- 52:54Speaker 2: get to live that out too.
- 52:55Speaker 3: Yes, yes, I have a lot of her study and
- 53:00Speaker 3: her notes. When I did, I taught Revelation. Uh, and
- 53:04Speaker 3: I still don't know anything about it. It's too deep,
- 53:08Speaker 3: but I have it was so good. It took us
- 53:11Speaker 3: two years to go through it, the little group I have.
- 53:14Speaker 3: But I had these big charts that my mother in
- 53:17Speaker 3: law had made and it was so beautiful to tack
- 53:20Speaker 3: those up on the wall. And so we're exercising in
- 53:23Speaker 3: that room, right, and then we sit down and we
- 53:26Speaker 3: read Revelation and my mother in law's notes are on
- 53:29Speaker 3: the wall, and there is a legacy to be had absolutely, families,
- 53:34Speaker 3: and we need to we need to pass that love
- 53:36Speaker 3: for God's word down.
- 53:39Speaker 2: Amen. Amen, that's that's actually a command in Deuteronomy. Yes, agains,
- 53:44Speaker 2: because how are they going to know that I in
- 53:47Speaker 2: the Red Sea unless you tell them that's that's such
- 53:50Speaker 2: a that's such a big thing. And then we have
- 53:52Speaker 2: the opportunity, I mean, we have we have testimonies, we
- 53:54Speaker 2: have a testament of God's goodness that we've lived through,
- 53:57Speaker 2: and we have the opportunity to uh to teach our
- 53:59Speaker 2: kids that things, which requires some uncomfortable conversations. But yes,
- 54:04Speaker 2: they're either going to hear it from you or they're
- 54:06Speaker 2: going to go learn the hard way right right now now, Kim,
- 54:10Speaker 2: I could talk to you all day, and I'm so
- 54:11Speaker 2: grateful for this conversation coming up on Enjoy Yeah, Sa same.
- 54:15Speaker 2: So I would love to cover you in prayer, cover
- 54:19Speaker 2: the ways that you minister in prayer and h and
- 54:21Speaker 2: also to close this off with prayer. So if you
- 54:24Speaker 2: would bow your head with me, sure, Father, God, thank
- 54:27Speaker 2: you so much for this day. Thank you for the
- 54:29Speaker 2: opportunity to meet my sister Kim and to have this conversation. God,
- 54:34Speaker 2: I pray it's been a blessing to those who are
- 54:36Speaker 2: listening and watching. Got to pray a special hedge of
- 54:39Speaker 2: protection around Kim and her ministry with fitness, but also
- 54:46Speaker 2: also your Holy Spirit's energy and peace and love. As
- 54:51Speaker 2: she shows up at work as a nurse. I know
- 54:54Speaker 2: she does such important work, bearing her own burden will
- 54:59Speaker 2: and bearing the burdens of the families that she touches
- 55:02Speaker 2: through working with well your children whose minds are deteriorating here.
- 55:08Speaker 2: I pray your grace is sufficient for her, that she
- 55:13Speaker 2: is a light in a dark place, and that your
- 55:16Speaker 2: love shines through so it doesn't feel dark at all.
- 55:19Speaker 2: I also pray that you will sustain her body so
- 55:21Speaker 2: that she can continue being an instructor, whether she's Miss
- 55:25Speaker 2: Kim or Coach Kim, that she can help other people
- 55:28Speaker 2: to be independent in you until you call them home.
- 55:35Speaker 2: God bless him and bless this conversation in Jesus' name. Amen, Amen,
- 55:41Speaker 2: thank you, Yes, thank you so much. And I would
- 55:44Speaker 2: encourage our listeners. I'm going to put some links in
- 55:46Speaker 2: the show notes. You invited people to connect with you
