- 0:20Speaker 1: Last Saturday, we were sitting here trying to figure out
- 0:23Speaker 1: what in the world was wrong with this Florida football team.
- 0:26Speaker 1: A team that started 4-0, climbed all the way to
- 0:29Speaker 1: the number eight spot in the country, and looked like
- 0:33Speaker 1: it might be ahead of schedule under Coach Summerall. And
- 0:36Speaker 1: then suddenly they lost two games. And not just lost,
- 0:39Speaker 1: got absolutely embarrassed. The defense couldn't stop anybody. The offensive
- 0:44Speaker 1: line couldn't lock anybody. Florida wasn't playing physical football. They
- 0:48Speaker 1: weren't executing. And quite frankly, they didn't look like a
- 0:52Speaker 1: team that had a whole lot of fight left in them.
- 0:55Speaker 1: And then you got to go on the road to
- 0:57Speaker 1: face number seven, Texas, in front of more than 100,000
- 1:01Speaker 1: fans without your starting quarterback, Aaron Filo, and without one
- 1:05Speaker 1: of your most explosive weapons, Invernell Brown III.
- 1:10Speaker 2: So what happens?
- 1:11Speaker 1: Florida falls behind 17-3. And at that moment, I'm sure
- 1:14Speaker 1: a lot of Gator fans are thinking, ding, here we
- 1:17Speaker 1: go again. But this time, something was different. Florida didn't fold.
- 1:22Speaker 1: Florida didn't quit. Florida didn't let one bad quarter turn
- 1:26Speaker 1: into another embarrassing afternoon. Instead, the Gators scored 24 unanswered points.
- 1:32Speaker 1: They dominated the middle eight of the football game, and
- 1:36Speaker 1: they walked out of Austin with a 27-24 victory over
- 1:40Speaker 1: the seventh-ranked team in the country. And I think what's
- 1:44Speaker 1: most encouraging about this win isn't necessarily that Florida beat Texas.
- 1:50Speaker 1: It's how Florida beat Texas. This was a team that
- 1:55Speaker 1: looked completely different from the one that we watched against
- 1:58Speaker 1: Missouri and South Carolina. So now we're going to do
- 2:01Speaker 1: what we do every Sunday, and that's go over the good,
- 2:05Speaker 1: the bad, and the ugly. And guys, there is a
- 2:08Speaker 1: lot more good than we've had the last couple of weeks.
- 2:11Speaker 1: I want to start with what I think is the
- 2:13Speaker 1: most important part of the football game. If you are
- 2:16Speaker 1: not new to this channel, you've heard me talk about
- 2:18Speaker 1: this a lot.
- 2:20Speaker 2: The middle eight.
- 2:21Speaker 1: Those final four minutes of the first half and then
- 2:24Speaker 1: the opening four minutes of the second half. And when
- 2:26Speaker 1: you look at the way this game unfolded, I don't
- 2:30Speaker 1: think you can overstate how important that stretch was. Florida
- 2:34Speaker 1: was trailing 17-3. Texas had scored on its first two
- 2:38Speaker 1: offensive possessions. Then to add insult to injury, they added
- 2:42Speaker 1: a 64-yard punt return touchdown. The Gators had struggled to
- 2:47Speaker 1: move the football. They hadn't converted a third down. And
- 2:51Speaker 1: I don't know about you, but I was sitting there
- 2:53Speaker 1: wondering whether this was about to become a third consecutive blowout.
- 2:57Speaker 1: But then Florida's defense makes a play. Texas decides to
- 3:01Speaker 1: go for it on fourth and one near midfield. And
- 3:04Speaker 1: Ty Jackson shoots through the line of scrimmage to blow
- 3:07Speaker 1: up the running back for a loss.
- 3:09Speaker 2: It was a huge play.
- 3:11Speaker 1: I want to tip my hat to Ty Jackson because, man,
- 3:15Speaker 1: when given the moment, he stepped up.
- 3:18Speaker 2: Now, let's talk about why that was a huge play.
- 3:21Speaker 1: Not just because Florida got the football back, but because
- 3:24Speaker 1: somebody finally stepped up and changed the momentum. And then
- 3:29Speaker 1: you get to one of my favorite coaching decisions of
- 3:31Speaker 1: the entire game. Florida is facing fourth and 12 at
- 3:34Speaker 1: the Texas 36-yard line.
- 3:36Speaker 2: So let's think about this situation.
- 3:38Speaker 1: You are down 14 points. You are on the road.
- 3:42Speaker 1: You are playing a quarterback making his first start, and
- 3:47Speaker 1: it's fourth and 12. John Sumrall could have played it conservatively,
- 3:52Speaker 1: and I don't think anybody would have blamed him.
- 3:54Speaker 2: But instead, he put the football in Tramell Jones Jr.
- 3:57Speaker 1: 's hands, and Jones delivers an absolutely beautiful throw to
- 4:02Speaker 1: Dallas Wilson along the sideline for 17 yards. Wilson makes
- 4:05Speaker 1: the catch, gets his feet down, and suddenly Florida has life.
- 4:10Speaker 1: A few plays later, Jones finds Lakata Dupree for a
- 4:13Speaker 1: seven-yard touchdown, and Just like that, what looked like a
- 4:17Speaker 1: potential disaster becomes a seven-point game at halftime.
- 4:22Speaker 2: But here's where it gets even better.
- 4:23Speaker 1: Florida gets the football to start the second half.
- 4:26Speaker 2: And what do the Gators do?
- 4:28Speaker 1: They put together a 15-play, 69-yard touchdown drive that takes
- 4:33Speaker 1: more than eight minutes off the clock.
- 4:35Speaker 2: Eight minutes.
- 4:37Speaker 1: With a backup quarterback making his first career start against
- 4:40Speaker 1: the number seven ranked team in the country on the road.
- 4:45Speaker 1: And on that one possession, Florida converted five third downs.
- 4:49Speaker 2: Let that sink in.
- 4:50Speaker 1: Florida had gone the entire first half without converting a
- 4:54Speaker 1: third down. Then Tramell Jones comes out of the locker room,
- 4:57Speaker 1: leads that offense, converts five third downs on one drive.
- 5:02Speaker 2: That is unbelievable.
- 5:05Speaker 1: And the drive ends with another touchdown pass to Lakota Dupree.
- 5:08Speaker 2: Suddenly it's 17-17. Now, Technically, the.
- 5:12Speaker 1: Middle eight concludes before the opening second half drive is
- 5:16Speaker 1: finished because, again, it's usually that it's the four minutes
- 5:19Speaker 1: going into halftime, the four minutes going out of halftime.
- 5:22Speaker 2: But I'm going to give it.
- 5:23Speaker 1: To Florida because it was that same possession that eats
- 5:27Speaker 1: eight minutes.
- 5:28Speaker 2: And you know what? I'd rather you eat eight than four.
- 5:32Speaker 1: Florida's domination of that entire stretch around halftime is what
- 5:37Speaker 1: completely changed this football game. The Gators took a game
- 5:41Speaker 1: that appeared to be getting away from them and turned
- 5:44Speaker 1: it into a game being played on their terms.
- 5:47Speaker 2: Now, this is really.
- 5:49Speaker 1: Interesting because Coach talked to us last week about going
- 5:53Speaker 1: into the locker room at halftime when Florida was down
- 5:55Speaker 1: seven at home and everybody looking like their dog had
- 5:59Speaker 1: just died and how they weren't emotionally strong. and mentally
- 6:05Speaker 1: capable of rallying from that. So if you aren't emotionally
- 6:09Speaker 1: capable of rallying down seven at home, how is it
- 6:14Speaker 1: that you are able to do it down seven on
- 6:16Speaker 1: the road with a guy starting at quarterback who hasn't
- 6:19Speaker 1: started before? I think there is so much praise due
- 6:23Speaker 1: to this coaching staff over that. The ability to mentally
- 6:29Speaker 1: toughen this team from that South Carolina game to this
- 6:33Speaker 1: game cannot be underscored. I really think, you know, that
- 6:38Speaker 1: momentum after that they scored coming out at halftime, it
- 6:42Speaker 1: never really shifted back to Texas until those final few minutes.
- 6:47Speaker 1: And Coach Summerall acknowledged after the game that Florida absolutely
- 6:50Speaker 1: needed that momentum because of how poorly it had played early.
- 6:54Speaker 1: He said the Gators hadn't finished the first half well
- 6:57Speaker 1: and started, if they hadn't, and they hadn't started the
- 7:00Speaker 1: second half well, well, they weren't going to win. And yeah,
- 7:04Speaker 1: that's true. This was the game. How you went into
- 7:07Speaker 1: halftime and how you came out of halftime. Not the
- 7:10Speaker 1: final fumble. Not the touchdown that gave Florida a 10-point lead.
- 7:14Speaker 1: It was the decision to not fold. down 17-3, and
- 7:19Speaker 1: then the execution that followed. We've watched Florida teams over
- 7:23Speaker 1: the years get into those situations and completely unravel.
- 7:26Speaker 2: Shoot, we watched it last week.
- 7:28Speaker 1: This team could have done the same thing. Instead, it
- 7:32Speaker 1: fought back, and that led directly to my next good,
- 7:36Speaker 1: the fight, the mentality, and the response. One thing Coach
- 7:41Speaker 1: Summerall kept coming back to in his post-game press conference
- 7:44Speaker 1: was the way his team fought. After the South Carolina game,
- 7:48Speaker 1: we weren't just questioning execution. We were questioning effort and
- 7:52Speaker 1: physicality and whether this team had the mentality needed to
- 7:56Speaker 1: compete in the SEC. And Coach Summerall wasn't hiding from
- 7:59Speaker 1: any of that. He admitted that the previous two weeks
- 8:02Speaker 1: hadn't looked good and it hadn't looked like the kind
- 8:05Speaker 1: of fight that he expects from his football team. But
- 8:08Speaker 1: against Texas, we saw it. Florida could have let that
- 8:12Speaker 1: 17-3 deficit define the afternoon. Instead, the Gators outscored Texas
- 8:17Speaker 1: 24-0 before the Longhorns finally scored again with just over
- 8:20Speaker 1: four minutes remaining.
- 8:22Speaker 2: And let's remember, that.
- 8:23Speaker 1: Wasn't against some overmatched opponent. This was against a Texas
- 8:27Speaker 1: team that had been ranked number one in the country
- 8:29Speaker 1: just a week earlier. This was Florida's first true road
- 8:33Speaker 1: win over a top 10 opponent since 2012. And it
- 8:37Speaker 1: was the first time the Gators had beaten two top
- 8:40Speaker 1: 10 opponents in the same season since 2012 as well.
- 8:42Speaker 1: Those are significant accomplishments for a first-year head coach. But
- 8:47Speaker 1: what I found interesting was that Samara really didn't want
- 8:50Speaker 1: to celebrate what this means historically. He basically said, the
- 8:53Speaker 1: win doesn't guarantee anything moving forward. And he made a
- 8:56Speaker 1: comment that I thought was both Funny and revealing. He
- 9:01Speaker 1: said Florida still isn't a complete team. They're not suddenly
- 9:04Speaker 1: great because they beat Texas. They just have to keep
- 9:07Speaker 1: getting better. And he basically was like, we have to
- 9:09Speaker 1: figure out how to suck less next week and continue
- 9:13Speaker 1: to suck less.
- 9:15Speaker 2: And, you know, but he's right.
- 9:17Speaker 1: And I think that it's such, it was funny when
- 9:19Speaker 1: he said it, but it's so true. And I actually
- 9:21Speaker 1: love that mentality. We saw what happened after the Ole
- 9:26Speaker 1: Miss game. Everybody was telling Florida how good it was.
- 9:30Speaker 1: The Gators climbed in the rankings and then suddenly they
- 9:33Speaker 1: got punched in the mouth two consecutive weeks. and they
- 9:36Speaker 1: didn't respond in those games. And Summerall clearly does not
- 9:39Speaker 1: want that happening again. So celebrate the win, absolutely. But
- 9:44Speaker 1: understand what made it possible. The effort, the physicality, the
- 9:49Speaker 1: discipline in the second half, and the willingness to keep
- 9:52Speaker 1: competing when things aren't going your way.
- 9:55Speaker 2: That is what Florida has to build on from here.
- 9:58Speaker 2: Another good Tramell Jones Jr., what a start. How about that?
- 10:04Speaker 1: I don't think anybody could have reasonably expected him to
- 10:07Speaker 1: walk into Austin and do what he did. No, he
- 10:11Speaker 1: didn't throw for 300 yards. He didn't put together some
- 10:13Speaker 1: spectacular high right reel of deep passes. But he did
- 10:18Speaker 1: exactly what Florida needed him to do. He finished 22
- 10:22Speaker 1: of 35 for 155 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions.
- 10:26Speaker 1: He also rushed 10 times for 41 yards. And those
- 10:29Speaker 1: rushing yards were really important. One of the things Florida
- 10:32Speaker 1: has been missing offensively is that additional threat from the
- 10:36Speaker 1: quarterback position. Jones made Texas account for his legs. He
- 10:40Speaker 1: extended drives and he picked up difficult yards. And I
- 10:44Speaker 1: think perhaps most importantly, He didn't make the kind of
- 10:47Speaker 1: catastrophic mistake that can completely change.
- 10:49Speaker 2: A football game.
- 10:50Speaker 1: I also want to point something else out about his performance.
- 10:53Speaker 1: He wasn't particularly sharp early. He missed some open receivers.
- 10:58Speaker 1: There were throws he absolutely has to make going forward.
- 11:02Speaker 1: But what impressed me was that he didn't let those
- 11:05Speaker 1: mistakes snowball. Think about the position that he was put in.
- 11:10Speaker 1: First start ever on the road against Texas. You can't
- 11:14Speaker 1: dial up a more intense situation for him. Add in
- 11:18Speaker 1: that you're coming off of two losses.
- 11:20Speaker 2: Your fan base is upset about that.
- 11:23Speaker 1: You know, I cannot underscore how monumental an ask that
- 11:31Speaker 1: was of Tramell Jones. And listen, like I said, he
- 11:36Speaker 1: made some early mistakes, but he never let them go.
- 11:39Speaker 1: snowball into each other. He missed a throw. He came
- 11:42Speaker 1: back and made the next one. That is exactly what
- 11:44Speaker 1: Summerall praised after the game. He also told a great
- 11:48Speaker 1: story about Jones' development. Apparently, after spring football, Summerall challenged
- 11:52Speaker 1: him because he didn't feel like he was spending enough
- 11:54Speaker 1: time learning the offense, putting in the extra work. And
- 11:59Speaker 1: Jones responded. He started putting in more time, preparing differently,
- 12:03Speaker 1: and taking ownership of his own development. Then he didn't
- 12:07Speaker 1: win the starting job in training camp. but he went
- 12:10Speaker 1: back to the drawing board and kept working. And when
- 12:13Speaker 1: his opportunity finally came, he was ready. That is a
- 12:18Speaker 1: great lesson for any young player. Now, does this mean
- 12:23Speaker 1: Jones should be Florida's starting quarterback against Georgia? We're going
- 12:27Speaker 1: to get to that in a minute, but there is
- 12:29Speaker 1: no question that he earned himself some serious consideration. And
- 12:34Speaker 1: what I really liked was his final meaningful play. Texas
- 12:38Speaker 1: had just turned the ball over. Florida needed a first
- 12:41Speaker 1: down to put the game away. And on third and seven,
- 12:44Speaker 1: he called his own number. He kept the football. He
- 12:47Speaker 1: picked up nine yards.
- 12:49Speaker 2: Ball game.
- 12:50Speaker 1: That is a quarterback understanding the situation and making the
- 12:54Speaker 1: play his team needs. On the road against Texas. It's
- 12:59Speaker 1: incredibly impressive.
- 13:02Speaker 2: Got to add the defense to my list of good, too.
- 13:05Speaker 1: Guys, we are 13 minutes into this, and we are
- 13:07Speaker 1: still talking about the good. I really think this was
- 13:11Speaker 1: my biggest surprise of the entire game. Coming into this matchup,
- 13:15Speaker 1: the Gators were allowing nearly 393 yards per game. They
- 13:19Speaker 1: were ranked 131st nationally in pass defense. And over the
- 13:22Speaker 1: past two games, they had allowed 619 passing yards and
- 13:27Speaker 1: seven passing touchdowns.
- 13:29Speaker 2: Those are awful. numbers.
- 13:31Speaker 1: So naturally you're concerned about what Arch Manning and Texas
- 13:35Speaker 1: might do. And early on, it looked like those concerns
- 13:39Speaker 1: were justified. But after the first two Texas possessions, The
- 13:43Speaker 1: Gators completely changed the way this football game was being played.
- 13:48Speaker 1: The Longhorns finished just 272 total yards of offense. They
- 13:53Speaker 1: only had 13 first downs. They only converted two of
- 13:56Speaker 1: 10 third downs. How many times have I sat on
- 13:59Speaker 1: this channel and talked to you about the fact that
- 14:02Speaker 1: Florida would be decent to good in first and second
- 14:05Speaker 1: down and then give up long third down plays that
- 14:09Speaker 1: our third down defense had been atrocious?
- 14:11Speaker 2: Not yesterday.
- 14:12Speaker 1: And then add in that Florida recorded five sacks and
- 14:16Speaker 1: 11 tackles for loss. Think about that, 11 tackles for loss.
- 14:21Speaker 1: That's the kind of disruptive defense we expected to see
- 14:24Speaker 1: from this front seven.
- 14:25Speaker 2: Miles Graham was outstanding. Seven tackles and, of course, that
- 14:29Speaker 2: strip sack that.
- 14:30Speaker 1: Ultimately sealed the game. How about LJ McCray? One and
- 14:34Speaker 1: a half sacks. And he had two and a half
- 14:37Speaker 1: tackles for a loss. Ty Jackson, we talked about in
- 14:39Speaker 1: the beginning of this video, another player that really stood out.
- 14:43Speaker 1: And I want to spend some more time talking about
- 14:45Speaker 1: Jackson because Summerall told an interesting story about him after
- 14:48Speaker 1: the game too. He said Jackson was the team's internal
- 14:51Speaker 1: special teams player of the week following that South Carolina loss.
- 14:55Speaker 1: And the only play Summerall showed the team from that
- 14:57Speaker 1: game was Jackson continuing to play hard and forcing a
- 15:01Speaker 1: punt block, even when Florida was getting blown out. Why?
- 15:06Speaker 2: Because Summerall wanted everyone.
- 15:07Speaker 1: To see what competing until the final whistle looks like.
- 15:11Speaker 1: And then against Texas, Jackson gets more opportunities, and he
- 15:15Speaker 1: made one of the biggest plays of the game on
- 15:17Speaker 1: that fourth down stop. That is exactly the kind of
- 15:20Speaker 1: thing you want to see from a young guy. And
- 15:23Speaker 1: it also tells me Summerall and his staff are willing
- 15:25Speaker 1: to reward guys who practice hard and play hard.
- 15:29Speaker 2: Now here's something else I found really interesting.
- 15:31Speaker 1: Sarmal said Florida didn't install a bunch of complicated new
- 15:35Speaker 1: defensive schemes. He said the biggest difference between this game
- 15:39Speaker 1: and the previous two was execution and mentality. He said
- 15:44Speaker 1: the players operated with more urgency, more physicality, and more aggression.
- 15:49Speaker 1: He also acknowledged telling defensive coordinator Brad White during the
- 15:52Speaker 1: game that they needed to stop sitting back in coverage
- 15:55Speaker 1: and start attacking Manning. And that is exactly what they did.
- 15:59Speaker 1: Instead of allowing Manning to get comfortable, they put pressure
- 16:02Speaker 1: on him. They made him uncomfortable. And that pressure ultimately
- 16:07Speaker 1: created the turnover that sealed the victory.
- 16:10Speaker 2: Another good. How about the offensive line?
- 16:13Speaker 1: I feel like I can't talk about the defensive front
- 16:16Speaker 1: without also giving some credit to Florida's O-line. This was
- 16:20Speaker 1: a completely different performance than what we saw against Missouri
- 16:24Speaker 1: and South Carolina. Now, was it perfect? Absolutely not. We'll
- 16:28Speaker 1: get to those penalties in the bad. But this group
- 16:31Speaker 1: played with significantly more physicality. They gave Jones time to
- 16:36Speaker 1: make decisions. They weren't constantly putting the offense behind the chains.
- 16:40Speaker 1: And in the second half, they helped Florida sustain drives
- 16:42Speaker 1: that completely wore down the Texas defense.
- 16:45Speaker 2: One of the best defenses in the entire country.
- 16:47Speaker 1: Remember, Florida possessed the football for 38 minutes and 11 seconds.
- 16:52Speaker 1: That is 16 minutes longer than Texas. Texas only ran
- 16:56Speaker 1: 50 offensive plays, its fewest under Steve Sarkeesian ever.
- 17:01Speaker 2: That is incredible.
- 17:02Speaker 1: And part of that was Florida's ability to stay on
- 17:05Speaker 1: the field offensively. The Gators finished with 21 first downs
- 17:08Speaker 1: and converted eight third downs in the second half. That
- 17:11Speaker 1: is a major turnaround. And it starts up front. Summerall
- 17:15Speaker 1: said this offensive line showed better urgency, better finish, and
- 17:19Speaker 1: better physicality.
- 17:20Speaker 2: And while Jaden Baugh didn't have one of those.
- 17:22Speaker 1: Explosive 150 or 200-yard performances, his 25 carries for 91
- 17:27Speaker 1: yards were incredibly important, especially late in the game when
- 17:31Speaker 1: Florida needed to control the clock. His touchdown run to
- 17:35Speaker 1: make it 27-17 was the difference. All right, guys, I'm
- 17:39Speaker 1: going to take a second to tell you about something
- 17:41Speaker 1: really exciting before we get into the bad, and that
- 17:44Speaker 1: is that we are now available on Apple Podcasts and
- 17:46Speaker 1: on Spotify. You guys have been asking me for an
- 17:49Speaker 1: audio option. So now we have that. If you are
- 17:52Speaker 1: already subscribed to that audio option, you heard that I
- 17:55Speaker 1: dropped my immediate reactions to the game the second it
- 17:59Speaker 1: was over over there. So I'm going to try and
- 18:02Speaker 1: do that as often as I can. If you're not
- 18:04Speaker 1: subscribed on one of those two options, go ahead and
- 18:06Speaker 1: go over there and do it. And if there is
- 18:08Speaker 1: something else, another platform I should be on that I'm not,
- 18:11Speaker 1: let me know down in the comments and I'll do
- 18:12Speaker 1: my best to get on there. We appreciate you listening
- 18:15Speaker 1: any way you consume our content. Let's go ahead and
- 18:18Speaker 1: get into the bad. And as much as I love
- 18:20Speaker 1: the way Florida responded, I think the start was about
- 18:25Speaker 1: as bad as it could get.
- 18:27Speaker 2: The Gators were terrible early.
- 18:29Speaker 1: Texas scored on its first two possessions. Florida's offense opened
- 18:32Speaker 1: with consecutive three and outs. The offensive line committed false
- 18:35Speaker 1: start penalties. The defense gave up a 32-yard touchdown run.
- 18:40Speaker 1: And before Florida could establish any sort of rhythm, it
- 18:42Speaker 1: was trailing 17-3. You can't consistently win football games in
- 18:47Speaker 1: the SEC starting like that. And while I give Florida
- 18:50Speaker 1: tremendous credit for coming back, I also recognize that teams
- 18:53Speaker 1: like Georgia aren't necessarily going to let you back into
- 18:56Speaker 1: the game. You fall behind to Georgia by 14 points,
- 18:59Speaker 1: you are asking for trouble. The Gators have to figure
- 19:02Speaker 1: out how to start games with the same urgency and
- 19:05Speaker 1: physicality that they showed in the second half because relying
- 19:08Speaker 1: on dramatic comebacks is not a sustainable formula. Number two
- 19:13Speaker 1: is the penalties and mental mistakes. Florida had six penalties
- 19:17Speaker 1: for 50 yards in the first half, and seven were
- 19:19Speaker 1: completely avoidable. The offensive line had three false starts. There
- 19:23Speaker 1: was a defensive pass interference penalty that helped Texas score
- 19:26Speaker 1: on its opening possession. Jaden Woods had a face mask
- 19:29Speaker 1: penalty that contributed to another scoring opportunity. And those mistakes
- 19:33Speaker 1: were especially frustrating because Florida was already struggling to find
- 19:36Speaker 1: its footing.
- 19:37Speaker 2: You can't help good teams move the football. You just can't.
- 19:42Speaker 1: Now, the positive is that those mistakes largely disappeared in
- 19:46Speaker 1: the second half, and I think that's also something worth recognizing.
- 19:49Speaker 1: But the fact that Florida needed nearly an entire half
- 19:53Speaker 1: to clean things up is still concerning. Number three, the
- 19:57Speaker 1: secondary is still a concern. The final defensive numbers were outstanding.
- 20:01Speaker 1: But I am not ready to say Florida's secondary is
- 20:03Speaker 1: suddenly fixed. And that fourth quarter completion to Emmitt Mosley,
- 20:08Speaker 1: that's exactly why. Texas was facing fourth down. Florida had
- 20:12Speaker 1: a chance to get off the field and essentially put
- 20:14Speaker 1: the game away. And somehow Manning escapes pressure and finds
- 20:17Speaker 1: Mosley for a 62-yard gain. That can't happen, especially with
- 20:21Speaker 1: the game on the line. A few plays later, Texas scored.
- 20:25Speaker 1: And what should have been a comfortable finish becomes a
- 20:27Speaker 1: three-point game. Now, I understand Manning made a tremendous play
- 20:31Speaker 1: escaping the pocket, but the coverage breakdown is still unacceptable.
- 20:35Speaker 1: And while the pass rush covered up a lot of
- 20:37Speaker 1: the secondary's weaknesses on Saturday, Georgia and other upcoming opponents
- 20:42Speaker 1: are going to continue to test those DBs. Florida needs
- 20:45Speaker 1: more consistency back there. Let's talk about the ugly. Special
- 20:50Speaker 1: teams almost changed the entire game. That punt return touchdown
- 20:55Speaker 1: was brutal. Ryan Niblett takes a Florida punt back 64
- 20:59Speaker 1: yards for a touchdown, and suddenly Texas leads 17-3. Kanye
- 21:04Speaker 1: Clark has an opportunity to make the tackle. His hands
- 21:07Speaker 1: are on the returner, but he misses. And it wasn't
- 21:11Speaker 1: his only special team's mistake. Earlier, Alec Clark delivered a
- 21:15Speaker 1: beautiful 74-yard punt that appeared to be headed for the
- 21:19Speaker 1: Texas one-yard line. But Kanye Clark touches the football while
- 21:25Speaker 1: in the end zone, turning what should have been an
- 21:27Speaker 1: outstanding field position for Florida into a touchback.
- 21:32Speaker 2: Now, listen, when you net a.
- 21:34Speaker 1: 54 yards anyway, it's still an incredible punt. But that
- 21:39Speaker 1: was right there. That was a self-reliance. Those are the
- 21:44Speaker 1: kind of mistakes that get you beat. And against a
- 21:47Speaker 1: team as talented as Texas, that's especially costly. Now, I
- 21:51Speaker 1: do want to give Kanye Clark credit for responding.
- 21:55Speaker 2: He had some redemption.
- 21:57Speaker 1: He finished with six tackles, and he is the person
- 22:00Speaker 1: that recovered the fumble that sealed the victory. And I
- 22:04Speaker 1: do think that's another example of the mentality we saw
- 22:07Speaker 1: from Florida on Saturday. A player makes costly mistakes early.
- 22:12Speaker 1: but he doesn't let those mistakes define the rest of
- 22:15Speaker 1: the game. But still, those two special teams errors, they
- 22:19Speaker 1: cannot continue. And I want to be fair here because
- 22:22Speaker 1: Florida's kicking game was otherwise excellent. Alec Clark averaged 51.8
- 22:29Speaker 1: yards per punt. Patrick Durkin made both of his field goals,
- 22:32Speaker 1: including a 28-yarder that gave Florida its first lead. So
- 22:36Speaker 1: this was absolutely not an across-the-board special teams disaster.
- 22:42Speaker 2: There were two critical mistakes.
- 22:45Speaker 1: That created some unnecessary adversity. Florida has incredible special teams
- 22:52Speaker 1: right now. I want to see that continue. These mistakes,
- 22:55Speaker 1: got to fix them. Number two, Florida still has to
- 22:58Speaker 1: learn how to finish, and that's my other ugly. Even
- 23:01Speaker 1: after everything Florida did to take control of this game,
- 23:04Speaker 1: the Gators still gave Texas an opportunity to steal it.
- 23:07Speaker 2: You are leading 27-17 with just over six minutes remaining.
- 23:11Speaker 1: You've completely dominated the second half, and you have a
- 23:15Speaker 1: chance to put the game away. Instead, Texas converts that
- 23:18Speaker 1: fourth down bomb, scores a touchdown, and cuts the lead
- 23:21Speaker 1: to three. Then Florida gets the football back and goes
- 23:23Speaker 1: three and out. A three and out that loses four yards.
- 23:27Speaker 2: Suddenly, Texas has the.
- 23:28Speaker 1: Ball near midfield with two minutes and 32 seconds remaining
- 23:32Speaker 1: and an opportunity to tie or win. That is not
- 23:35Speaker 1: how you want to finish a game that you have
- 23:36Speaker 1: controlled for nearly three quarters. Fortunately, the defense made the
- 23:41Speaker 1: play when it needed to make a play.
- 23:44Speaker 2: I mean, come on.
- 23:45Speaker 1: We got to give it up for Miles Graham. He
- 23:48Speaker 1: forces that fumble on that strip sack. Kanye Clark recovers,
- 23:53Speaker 1: and Tramell Jones picks up the first down with his feet.
- 23:56Speaker 1: You can't always count on your defense to bail you out.
- 23:59Speaker 1: Florida needs to be able to close games offensively, and
- 24:02Speaker 1: that's something Summerall and his staff absolutely need.
- 24:05Speaker 2: To work on during the bye week. So now the
- 24:08Speaker 2: big question. Who starts at quarterback against Georgia? We got
- 24:12Speaker 2: to talk about it.
- 24:13Speaker 1: I think that is going to be one of the
- 24:14Speaker 1: biggest conversations surrounding Florida over the next two weeks. Is
- 24:17Speaker 1: it Aaron Philo or Tramell Jones? I don't think the
- 24:20Speaker 1: answer is quite as simple as look at Saturday's result.
- 24:23Speaker 1: Philo played really well during Florida's 4-0 start. He helped
- 24:27Speaker 1: lead an offense that was putting up incredibly impressive numbers.
- 24:30Speaker 1: And I think it's unfair to put Missouri and South Carolina,
- 24:34Speaker 1: those losses, on him. The offensive line was struggling, the
- 24:37Speaker 1: running game wasn't working, and Florida was missing key offensive weapons.
- 24:41Speaker 1: The defense wasn't helping at all. Sarmal made a point
- 24:45Speaker 1: to say that Philo didn't cost Florida those two games,
- 24:48Speaker 1: and I do agree there. But here's where the conversation
- 24:51Speaker 1: gets interesting. Jones brings something different to this offense. His
- 24:57Speaker 1: mobility changes what defenses have to account for. He's capable
- 25:02Speaker 1: of extending plays and picking up first downs with his legs.
- 25:05Speaker 2: And against Texas, that was extremely valuable.
- 25:09Speaker 1: His ability to run gave Florida another way to move
- 25:12Speaker 1: the chains, especially when traditional running lanes just weren't opening. Now,
- 25:16Speaker 1: I am not suggesting Jones was flawless.
- 25:18Speaker 2: He wasn't. There were misthrows.
- 25:20Speaker 1: The passing game wasn't particularly explosive. And he still has
- 25:24Speaker 1: plenty of development ahead of him. But he showed poise
- 25:27Speaker 1: and confidence and a willingness to make plays in big moments.
- 25:31Speaker 1: And I think he's earned the opportunity to compete for
- 25:34Speaker 1: that job. The other factor is Philo's health. Semrel said
- 25:38Speaker 1: the shoulder injury isn't expected to be season-ending, but Florida
- 25:41Speaker 1: needs to make sure Philo can throw effectively and move
- 25:44Speaker 1: without limitations before they put him back on the field.
- 25:46Speaker 1: He called this a couple-week injury. So I think the
- 25:51Speaker 1: coaching staff has an interesting decision. Do you go back
- 25:54Speaker 1: to the quarterback who helped you start 4-0, or do
- 25:57Speaker 1: you stick with the quarterback who just helped engineer one
- 25:59Speaker 1: of Florida's biggest road wins in more than a decade?
- 26:02Speaker 2: Either way, it is a much.
- 26:05Speaker 1: better conversation than we were having just a week ago.
- 26:08Speaker 1: And this is one that will continue. And I do
- 26:10Speaker 1: think the answer, at least in part, depends on Philo's health.
- 26:16Speaker 1: So what does this really mean, this win? Here's where
- 26:20Speaker 1: I come down to. I don't think Florida suddenly became
- 26:22Speaker 1: a great football team on Saturday. There are still problems.
- 26:25Speaker 1: The secondary remains vulnerable. The offense still has limitations. The
- 26:29Speaker 1: penalties and the mental mistakes are frustrating. And the Gators
- 26:32Speaker 1: clearly have work to do before facing Georgia. As Coach
- 26:35Speaker 1: Summerall said, you gotta try and suck less. But I
- 26:39Speaker 1: also don't think we should minimize what happened in Austin.
- 26:42Speaker 1: Florida went on the road against the number seven ranked
- 26:45Speaker 1: team in the country. It was missing its starting quarterback.
- 26:47Speaker 1: It was missing one of its best playmakers, not just on.
- 26:50Speaker 2: Offense, but on special teams too.
- 26:52Speaker 1: It had just been embarrassed in consecutive games and they
- 26:55Speaker 1: fell behind 17-3.
- 26:57Speaker 2: They had every excuse in the world to fold, but
- 26:59Speaker 2: they didn't.
- 27:01Speaker 1: Instead, the Gators dominated the middle eight, they scored 24
- 27:04Speaker 1: unanswered points, they controlled the line of scrimmage, and they
- 27:06Speaker 1: made the plays necessary to beat a top 10 opponent.
- 27:10Speaker 1: And most importantly, they showed the fight and physicality that
- 27:13Speaker 1: had been missing.
- 27:15Speaker 2: To me, that's the biggest takeaway.
- 27:16Speaker 1: This game wasn't won with a bunch of spectacular offensive plays.
- 27:20Speaker 1: It wasn't won because Florida suddenly discovered some unstoppable scheme.
- 27:24Speaker 1: It was won because the Gators started doing the things
- 27:27Speaker 1: that successful football teams have to do. They executed. They
- 27:32Speaker 1: controlled possession. They converted third downs. They won at the
- 27:36Speaker 1: line of scrimmage. And when things got difficult, they didn't quit.
- 27:40Speaker 1: Now Florida heads into the bye week at 5-2, with
- 27:43Speaker 1: two victories over top 10 opponents and a huge rivalry
- 27:46Speaker 1: game against Georgia coming up on Halloween in Atlanta. And
- 27:50Speaker 1: Georgia is coming off a surprising loss of its own
- 27:53Speaker 1: to Auburn. Suddenly that matchup looks a whole lot more
- 27:57Speaker 1: interesting than it did just a week ago. Does this
- 28:00Speaker 1: mean Florida is going to beat Georgia?
- 28:01Speaker 2: Of course not.
- 28:03Speaker 1: But it does mean that there is reason to believe
- 28:05Speaker 1: this football team is capable of much more than what
- 28:08Speaker 1: we saw against Missouri and South Carolina. And that is
- 28:11Speaker 1: something I have wanted to see.
- 28:13Speaker 2: A response. Some toughness. Some fight.
- 28:16Speaker 1: A football team that wasn't willing to let its season
- 28:19Speaker 1: spiral out of control. Florida didn't win this game because
- 28:22Speaker 1: everything went right. Florida won this game because when everything
- 28:26Speaker 1: went wrong, the Gators refused to quit.
- 28:29Speaker 2: And to me, that is the biggest good of all.
- 28:33Speaker 1: That's my good, bad, and ugly from Florida's 27-24 victory
- 28:37Speaker 1: over Texas.
- 28:38Speaker 2: Now I want to hear from you.
- 28:39Speaker 1: What impressed you the most about this Florida team? Was
- 28:42Speaker 1: it Tramell Jones? Was it the defense? Was it the
- 28:44Speaker 1: coaching adjustments? And what do you think about how they
- 28:48Speaker 1: determine who starts at quarterback against Georgia? Drop your thoughts
