Transcript
- 0:03Speaker 1: This is the Sean O'Connell Show, your home of the
- 0:07Speaker 1: best inside of your Utes. Let's get back to OC
- 0:10Speaker 1: from the Murdoch Chevrolet studio of ESPN 700 at 92.1 FM.
- 0:14Speaker 1: Welcome to our number.
- 0:21Speaker 2: Two of the Sean O'Connell Show. Welcome in the Utah
- 0:24Speaker 2: football legend and the Super Bowl champion and the head
- 0:27Speaker 2: coach of the 7-1 Rancho Bernardo Broncos, Eric Weddle. joins
- 0:33Speaker 2: us once again. Hello, sir. How are you?
- 0:37Speaker 3: Living the dream, baby. Living the dream. We got a
- 0:41Speaker 3: big game Friday night. 7-1 playoff implications on the line.
- 0:46Speaker 3: Maybe a home playoff game. We'll see how high we
- 0:49Speaker 3: can go. We're playing one of the top teams in
- 0:52Speaker 3: the state, Mission Hills. Had a big win last week.
- 0:56Speaker 3: And then Saturday night, our Ute. versus the Houston. What
- 1:01Speaker 3: are they? The cougars? Yes. Yeah. Those cougars, man.
- 1:06Speaker 2: Speaker 0 1, you know, you know, it's crazy. I
- 1:12Speaker 2: I'd be embarrassed. I didn't know this already. I'm 43
- 1:14Speaker 2: years old, but we looked it up today or this week.
- 1:19Speaker 2: Why the Houston teams are called cougars. Cause there's no
- 1:24Speaker 2: mountains near Houston. There's no mountains in Houston. So how
- 1:26Speaker 2: do they get mountain lions or whatever? First of all,
- 1:29Speaker 2: there's no Cougars nearby, which is a dumb reason. Also,
- 1:36Speaker 2: they were named in the 1920s, and the reason they
- 1:39Speaker 2: got that name is because a coach, the former football
- 1:44Speaker 2: coach from Washington State University, got a job at the
- 1:48Speaker 2: University of Houston, and they didn't have team names. So
- 1:51Speaker 2: he's just like, let's name them Cougars like my old school.
- 1:54Speaker 2: Is that not the worst way to get a name
- 1:57Speaker 2: you've ever heard in your life?
- 1:59Speaker 3: They should disband that name and find a new one.
- 2:02Speaker 2: They absolutely should.
- 2:04Speaker 3: 100%. It's crazy.
- 2:05Speaker 2: It's absolutely crazy.
- 2:06Speaker 3: How embarrassing. All right.
- 2:09Speaker 2: So we've been trying to figure out how to feel
- 2:11Speaker 2: now for a few days about that win over Colorado,
- 2:14Speaker 2: because ultimately it's a win, but man, was it ugly.
- 2:19Speaker 2: What were your thoughts on Utah versus Colorado, where they
- 2:21Speaker 2: did improve to 6-0?
- 2:24Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, obviously it wasn't how we finished. I
- 2:29Speaker 3: think you give some credit to Colorado, right? Like, it's
- 2:34Speaker 3: okay to be in the game and the other team
- 2:37Speaker 3: executes at a higher level at points throughout that game.
- 2:40Speaker 3: And like Coach Scali said, within the first 60 seconds
- 2:45Speaker 3: of that postgame is we probably shouldn't have won the
- 2:49Speaker 3: way we played at the end of that game. And
- 2:52Speaker 3: the second half and just some– some of the things
- 2:54Speaker 3: that crept in, you know, whether it's schematically or just execution.
- 3:00Speaker 3: And I think, honestly, like, I think it's okay. It's
- 3:06Speaker 3: better to learn in a win than it is in
- 3:08Speaker 3: a loss. And especially you look over the history of
- 3:14Speaker 3: Utah in the last, I don't know, maybe if you
- 3:16Speaker 3: look back 10 years, and any time we have a
- 3:19Speaker 3: home-ranked opponent coming in, we usually– played down a tad
- 3:25Speaker 3: the week before. And that's human nature. You're still learning
- 3:29Speaker 3: the dynamics of this team, the leadership and the professionalism.
- 3:33Speaker 3: And as a coaching staff and coaches, pinpointing how we
- 3:37Speaker 3: need to motivate and inspire and also tighten the screws
- 3:41Speaker 3: on some things. So am I worried? No. They have
- 3:45Speaker 3: to go play great, and they have to play top-notch
- 3:48Speaker 3: football to beat this team because this team is dang
- 3:51Speaker 3: good coming in.
- 3:53Speaker 2: So we've talked a lot about pressure and the lack
- 3:56Speaker 2: thereof for this Utah football team. And, you know, you're
- 4:00Speaker 2: a guy who played in the defensive backfield in this defense.
- 4:04Speaker 2: And he played a lot of man coverage. And, you know,
- 4:07Speaker 2: when you're not able to get to the quarterback... bad
- 4:10Speaker 2: things can happen when you're in man, when you're not
- 4:12Speaker 2: able to get to the quarterback, bad things can happen
- 4:14Speaker 2: when you're in zone also, but it feels like, it
- 4:17Speaker 2: feels like this is something that they've got a remedy.
- 4:20Speaker 2: And I don't know if they've got the horses to
- 4:22Speaker 2: remedy it. You can't change your defense halfway through a season.
- 4:26Speaker 2: So Eric Weddle, genius, defensive mind, how do you solve
- 4:30Speaker 2: this problem where you still get some pressure on quarterbacks,
- 4:33Speaker 2: but you don't have to bring an extra body or
- 4:35Speaker 2: two every single time.
- 4:39Speaker 3: Yeah, it's, You know, I think how do I– you
- 4:49Speaker 3: said it perfectly. We are who we are at our core.
- 4:53Speaker 3: We have certain principles. We play certain techniques and coverages.
- 4:59Speaker 3: And I think it's understanding leveraging angles, right, from a
- 5:05Speaker 3: defensive back perspective. I think also from a coaching side perspective,
- 5:10Speaker 3: situational football and call-wise that could help out the secondary
- 5:15Speaker 3: and help out the defense. Basically, a two-score game, we're
- 5:21Speaker 3: still playing press man. That's like a cardinal sin. I
- 5:26Speaker 3: don't understand why in that situation we're still playing those
- 5:31Speaker 3: type of coverages when you want the clock as our friend.
- 5:36Speaker 3: The worst thing that could happen is if you score quick.
- 5:39Speaker 3: And so I know that's being talked about, so it's
- 5:42Speaker 3: not something that isn't. I just, you know, and I've
- 5:47Speaker 3: talked about this, and defensively and just schematically being a
- 5:52Speaker 3: little bit more of a two-shell type coverage defense at
- 5:56Speaker 3: times would benefit us, not just for situations, but also
- 6:02Speaker 3: alleviating the man-to-man at times when we're asking guys to
- 6:05Speaker 3: play man-to-man every single play. And it's not every single play, right?
- 6:09Speaker 3: But for the majority of the time you're playing man-to-man,
- 6:11Speaker 3: you give breaks to guys that are always in those
- 6:15Speaker 3: type of– it's now or never, right? This one play
- 6:19Speaker 3: could be the difference. When you're playing man-to-man, that's what
- 6:21Speaker 3: it feels like. And so any chance you can alleviate
- 6:25Speaker 3: that stress for a player or two or a snap
- 6:28Speaker 3: or a situation, it's big for the confidence of those players.
- 6:31Speaker 3: So I think they'll coach it up. I'm not– too
- 6:37Speaker 3: worried about it for the pressure and getting at the quarterback.
- 6:41Speaker 3: You don't always have to have sacks to affect the quarterback,
- 6:44Speaker 3: to affect the timing, but you have to make it,
- 6:47Speaker 3: you have to get this quarterback off the spot. You
- 6:49Speaker 3: got to hit them, even though you may not sack them,
- 6:52Speaker 3: if you're hitting them and making them think about it
- 6:54Speaker 3: and speeding up his timing, that is the secondary's best friend.
- 7:00Speaker 2: Offensively, this Utah team was, for the first time, kind
- 7:04Speaker 2: of bogged down in the red zone. And that's been uncharacteristic.
- 7:09Speaker 2: They've been off to such a hot start this year.
- 7:10Speaker 2: They're still six for six in, you know, six games
- 7:15Speaker 2: and six opening drives have led to touchdowns, which is great.
- 7:18Speaker 2: But they had three red zone trips against Colorado that
- 7:22Speaker 2: resulted in two field goals and a turnover instead of touchdowns.
- 7:27Speaker 2: which is uncharacteristic. When you watch that happen, when you
- 7:30Speaker 2: see it, was that a fluke, you think? Was that
- 7:32Speaker 2: something Colorado did that was super special? Is there any
- 7:36Speaker 2: reason to believe they won't be able to get back
- 7:39Speaker 2: to the old ways?
- 7:42Speaker 3: I think it's twofold. Like, yeah, could the execution have
- 7:45Speaker 3: been better? Yeah, could maybe the red zone plan be better? Obviously,
- 7:50Speaker 3: we didn't execute and score. So as a coach, you're
- 7:54Speaker 3: going to look, all right, well, what– Why wasn't the
- 7:58Speaker 3: plan the way it was? What could I have done
- 8:00Speaker 3: differently and maybe put our players in a better position, right?
- 8:04Speaker 3: And then you've got to give credit to Colorado. Like,
- 8:06Speaker 3: we talked about it. We didn't talk about it last
- 8:08Speaker 3: week because I didn't come on, but everyone knew and
- 8:11Speaker 3: the stats showed that Colorado had a really good defense.
- 8:15Speaker 3: They had a really good front. They created negative plays,
- 8:18Speaker 3: tons of TFLs, and you knew that it was going
- 8:22Speaker 3: to be a good challenge for us, and it was, right? Like, we...
- 8:26Speaker 3: We still put up enough points to win, right? Was
- 8:30Speaker 3: it under our average? Yeah. Could it have been more easily? Yeah,
- 8:33Speaker 3: it could have been. But, hey, tip your hat to
- 8:35Speaker 3: your opponent sometimes. It's okay to do that while also
- 8:40Speaker 3: understanding that we could have played better. So do I
- 8:42Speaker 3: think– I don't think it's going to be a problem.
- 8:45Speaker 3: I think when you look at Houston's defense, their run
- 8:49Speaker 3: defense is– The run defense, is it good in their
- 8:55Speaker 3: past defenses or is it flopped? I can't remember.
- 8:59Speaker 2: Houston's run defense is good. Their past defense is bad.
- 9:03Speaker 3: Okay. So neither is, I think, to the level of
- 9:08Speaker 3: Colorado as a whole. So I think we just got
- 9:13Speaker 3: to understand what we are and how you score in
- 9:16Speaker 3: the red zone. It's creating new line of scrimmage, moving
- 9:20Speaker 3: people off the ball. being sound in the run game
- 9:23Speaker 3: and then having those, those plays drawn up for the
- 9:26Speaker 3: low red and, and, and got to have a situations
- 9:29Speaker 3: that we execute, which we've done all year. So they're
- 9:31Speaker 3: going to, they're going to be fine. They're going to,
- 9:33Speaker 3: I'm not, I'm not really worried about it. I'm more
- 9:36Speaker 3: concerned with how we stop Houston's offense and that quarterback
- 9:41Speaker 3: and that what they got going over there. Cause I
- 9:45Speaker 3: think it could potentially get into a back and forth game.
- 9:48Speaker 3: I'd rather not, but this is going to be a
- 9:50Speaker 3: real test and really see if we're a championship playoff
- 9:55Speaker 3: caliber team or if we're not.
- 9:57Speaker 2: How much do you alter your defensive game plan? to
- 10:00Speaker 2: accommodate for a player, especially when that player is the quarterback?
- 10:05Speaker 2: Because it feels like Wegman, he's going to beat you
- 10:10Speaker 2: with his arm. And if he doesn't beat you with
- 10:12Speaker 2: his arm and you're great in coverage, but you're playing
- 10:15Speaker 2: man and you're, you know, Your hand is in somebody's
- 10:18Speaker 2: hip pocket and your eyes are on the coverage. He's
- 10:20Speaker 2: just going to be like, oh, nobody's looking at me.
- 10:22Speaker 2: I'm going to take off and run. So there's a
- 10:25Speaker 2: lot of ways that he can hurt you. How much
- 10:27Speaker 2: do you alter your game plan in order to accommodate
- 10:30Speaker 2: just him? Because you can spy, you can do some
- 10:32Speaker 2: other different things, but then you're getting out of what
- 10:35Speaker 2: we just talked about. You're getting out of your defensive identity.
- 10:39Speaker 3: Yeah, it's obviously a huge, huge challenge. And, like, listen,
- 10:45Speaker 3: we play some top-notch quarterbacks. over the last decade. So
- 10:48Speaker 3: this isn't, this isn't something that's new. We've had success
- 10:54Speaker 3: and we've also have not had success. So looking at
- 10:58Speaker 3: the history and how we fared in those games is
- 11:00Speaker 3: something that I would revisit. And I'm sure they've looked
- 11:05Speaker 3: at just as a schematical point of what has been good,
- 11:08Speaker 3: what hasn't. Obviously the offenses are different, but when you're
- 11:11Speaker 3: playing a really good quarterback with, talented guys on the perimeter,
- 11:16Speaker 3: some things have worked, some things haven't. So really identifying that.
- 11:20Speaker 3: And you've got to mix it up. And I'm a
- 11:25Speaker 3: big proponent of disguising and two-shell coverage and not letting
- 11:30Speaker 3: the quarterback know what you're in pre-snap. I've said that
- 11:36Speaker 3: my whole career. I've said that on here. So that's
- 11:40Speaker 3: nothing new. It's not like I'm getting after our Utah
- 11:44Speaker 3: youth defense. Like that's not what I'm saying. Just that's
- 11:46Speaker 3: who I am in my core. If I ever coached
- 11:48Speaker 3: in college, that's what would be my defense, right? Or
- 11:51Speaker 3: a head coach like that's just who I am. So
- 11:55Speaker 3: you got to understand when pre-stab you see certain coverages,
- 11:59Speaker 3: it's easy for a quarterback to get through the progression
- 12:01Speaker 3: and identify where he wants to go with the concept.
- 12:04Speaker 3: Does that make sense? So for a quarterback and what
- 12:09Speaker 3: I would hopefully see on Friday night or Saturday night
- 12:12Speaker 3: is is not showing that the pitcher go after the snap.
- 12:19Speaker 2: Eric Weddle is our guest here on the Sean O'Connell show,
- 12:21Speaker 2: talking all things, Utah football coming off of Colorado, when
- 12:24Speaker 2: heading into this Houston matchup college game day, you've had
- 12:28Speaker 2: some experience with college game day and they're back. So
- 12:35Speaker 2: how do you make it not a distraction for the players?
- 12:41Speaker 3: Honestly, I mean, it shouldn't be because you're not involved.
- 12:45Speaker 3: You stick with your routine. You know they're there on campus,
- 12:49Speaker 3: but you're not involved with it. So I think it's
- 12:53Speaker 3: always just the excitement that eyes are on us, they're
- 12:57Speaker 3: on our school, they're seeing what amazing university we are,
- 13:01Speaker 3: the city of Salt Lake, the people. I think we
- 13:05Speaker 3: recognize that. You recognize that as a player, but I
- 13:08Speaker 3: never felt it was a distraction. It was more so like, hey,
- 13:11Speaker 3: the whole country is going to be watching us. Let's
- 13:13Speaker 3: go play great and show what we're all about. And
- 13:16Speaker 3: sometimes that pressure or that distraction can hinder players or
- 13:21Speaker 3: a team. But I think overall we've handled this moment
- 13:26Speaker 3: pretty well, and I think it's a great opportunity to
- 13:31Speaker 3: go be us. And I'm sure Coach Scali is saying
- 13:34Speaker 3: the same thing. We don't need to be anybody but ourselves,
- 13:36Speaker 3: and our best is good enough. And so let's go
- 13:39Speaker 3: show the world what we're about.
- 13:43Speaker 2: Biggest game of the college football season so far took
- 13:46Speaker 2: place down in Provo last week and came down to
- 13:51Speaker 2: the last play of the game that ultimately should not
- 13:53Speaker 2: have been the last play of the game, according to
- 13:55Speaker 2: the clock, which is crazy that twice this year, there's
- 14:00Speaker 2: been a dispute over how many seconds are left, whether
- 14:02Speaker 2: there's one or there's zero Western Michigan, Michigan, and now
- 14:05Speaker 2: BYU Notre Dame. And I've asked everyone this question. The
- 14:10Speaker 2: correct football outcome for the end-of-game scenario in Notre Dame-BYU
- 14:16Speaker 2: is A, game ends as it was, and BYU gets
- 14:21Speaker 2: the win that they earned. B, pass interference flag should
- 14:25Speaker 2: have come in there. C, you don't have to throw
- 14:29Speaker 2: a flag, but Notre Dame gets one more snap. Which
- 14:32Speaker 2: one do you take?
- 14:34Speaker 3: I'm taking A because that's what happened, and I don't.
- 14:38Speaker 3: I don't really concern or, or talk, you know, like, okay,
- 14:42Speaker 3: go back in time. Do I think that, but now
- 14:46Speaker 3: if you're really like, you're really going to ask me,
- 14:48Speaker 3: I don't, you know, like there's one second on the clock. Right.
- 14:52Speaker 3: And did they go back and see when the ball
- 14:55Speaker 3: actually hit that it turned zero and on a different clock,
- 14:59Speaker 3: like nobody knows, it doesn't really matter. BYU outplayed Notre Dame.
- 15:03Speaker 3: It shouldn't have been close. They were the better team.
- 15:06Speaker 3: And yeah, So, yeah, like, I look at it in
- 15:10Speaker 3: that retrospect. Yeah, if I'm a Notre Dame fan, like, dang,
- 15:12Speaker 3: I'm probably pissed off. But just unbiasedly and seeing it
- 15:16Speaker 3: during the game, seeing how they called that game in
- 15:19Speaker 3: the second half, I 100% agree why they didn't throw
- 15:22Speaker 3: the flag. And I didn't think it was really warranted
- 15:24Speaker 3: anyways with the ball placement and him widening so far
- 15:28Speaker 3: to the sideline. Like, I thought it was good on good.
- 15:30Speaker 3: They called those tiki-tac penalties throughout the first half. They
- 15:33Speaker 3: tightened it up in the second half. And... What I
- 15:38Speaker 3: was most impressed with was how BYU handled... They physically...
- 15:47Speaker 3: I won't say manually, but they matched up with Notre Dame,
- 15:50Speaker 3: which I was really surprised. I thought there would be
- 15:54Speaker 3: a disadvantage for BYU in the trenches, the physicality, the athleticism.
- 16:01Speaker 3: And I actually thought BYU was more than them, which...
- 16:05Speaker 3: It showed. I mean, anyone that watched in person, you
- 16:07Speaker 3: could tell they were the better team. They were a
- 16:10Speaker 3: better coach. They out-executed them. You take away the muff
- 16:13Speaker 3: plant and the fake plant inside their own 30, I
- 16:19Speaker 3: bet they win by 20 the way the game was.
- 16:22Speaker 3: So BYU is going to be a tough team, man.
- 16:27Speaker 3: And as of right now, I think they're the better
- 16:28Speaker 3: team if we're looking at the Big 12. After this Saturday,
- 16:32Speaker 3: we're going to know where we stand, and I'll have
- 16:34Speaker 3: a better inclination of that game in a few weeks
- 16:40Speaker 3: that I'll be at, and we'll be representing the U
- 16:42Speaker 3: all day, every day. But it was an impressive win, man.
- 16:47Speaker 3: It really was, and it was great for the conference.
- 16:49Speaker 3: It really was to now have the opportunity to have
- 16:51Speaker 3: that win on BYU's resume. That 11-1 or potentially a 10-2,
- 16:57Speaker 3: being 12 champ, we can get multiple teams in the playoffs,
- 17:01Speaker 3: which is huge.
- 17:03Speaker 2: How come people on the Internet are trying to place
- 17:07Speaker 2: you in a BYU celebration throwing up the Y with
- 17:12Speaker 2: any random bearded dude in the picture?
- 17:14Speaker 3: You know, the Internet is crazy, and at least I
- 17:21Speaker 3: can defend myself. I can get up there and dispute
- 17:26Speaker 3: anything that's not true like I did once I saw it.
- 17:28Speaker 3: I was like, guys. That's 100% not me, and I
- 17:31Speaker 3: would never, ever, ever throw up the why in public. Like, okay,
- 17:36Speaker 3: that's not something I would ever do. I did it
- 17:40Speaker 3: when my daughter decided that she's going to BYU, like,
- 17:44Speaker 3: to support her. But I'm telling you right now, you'll
- 17:47Speaker 3: never see me on a field for BYU unless, like,
- 17:51Speaker 3: my son was playing there, right? Like, I have respect
- 17:54Speaker 3: for my Utes, but I also have respect for BYU.
- 17:57Speaker 3: So we watched the rush. trying to find out where
- 18:00Speaker 3: Brooklyn was in the chaos. And then literally, like, five
- 18:04Speaker 3: minutes into the rush in the field, we left. Like,
- 18:06Speaker 3: we were already out of the stadium. So, you know,
- 18:10Speaker 3: it's just cool. It's fans being crazy, like, which we love.
- 18:14Speaker 3: We're crazy in our own right. But anyone that knows
- 18:17Speaker 3: me knows I would never... ever be doing something like that.
- 18:23Speaker 2: You got to watch out with the AI stuff these days, obviously.
- 18:26Speaker 3: Oh, geez, I know. Nothing's safe anymore.
- 18:29Speaker 2: What is the NFL group chat saying about the way
- 18:32Speaker 2: that the Philadelphia Eagles handled the blood clot situation with
- 18:36Speaker 2: Jalen Hurts? Like, I sometimes roll my eyes at all
- 18:40Speaker 2: the player safety stuff because, you know, it's like fans
- 18:43Speaker 2: don't actually care if a guy plays when he's concussed.
- 18:47Speaker 2: Everyone tries to get on a high horse about it.
- 18:50Speaker 2: But this one, this one is like really scary. Blood
- 18:54Speaker 2: clots in your lungs. You're staying up for 36 hours.
- 18:57Speaker 2: And then the team's like, yeah, but you're cool. Go
- 18:59Speaker 2: play a football game. What are the NFL players saying
- 19:02Speaker 2: about this?
- 19:04Speaker 3: Oh, man, that whole story is pretty interesting and wild.
- 19:10Speaker 3: And I don't know, like, I haven't read up fully
- 19:14Speaker 3: on all the stuff that's come out. Initially, I read that.
- 19:18Speaker 3: when they first identified the blood clot in his calf,
- 19:24Speaker 3: that they said or told him that playing was actually
- 19:28Speaker 3: better for it. I don't know if that was any
- 19:31Speaker 3: true or not, but playing the game is something that, like,
- 19:36Speaker 3: as a player, you've got to remember, like, as a player,
- 19:39Speaker 3: we don't know anything from anything other than I play football,
- 19:43Speaker 3: X's and O's, like, This is what I do. So
- 19:46Speaker 3: if a doctor says, yeah, you're good to play, then okay.
- 19:50Speaker 3: I'm good to play. Like, let's rock. And then if
- 19:53Speaker 3: it's borderline, and, you know, we've all had in history
- 19:57Speaker 3: with doctors and teams, if it's borderline, then you're going
- 20:00Speaker 3: to be like, all right, I'm playing. Like, this is
- 20:03Speaker 3: what I do. Now, as serious as this was, I
- 20:07Speaker 3: don't know how they allowed it. But they did, and now, like, gosh,
- 20:14Speaker 3: his career and health is in jeopardy. So I just
- 20:18Speaker 3: hope he's going to be okay, for one. But two,
- 20:23Speaker 3: everyone has to remember, like, they don't really care about you.
- 20:29Speaker 3: They care about winning football games. And, you know, the
- 20:33Speaker 3: game will go on. They'll find a new player to
- 20:35Speaker 3: replace Hurts and get through the season. Like, the NFL
- 20:39Speaker 3: will never stop. right like they'll just the next guy's
- 20:42Speaker 3: up and then this will be this will get glossed
- 20:44Speaker 3: over and everyone will forget talking about it because of
- 20:47Speaker 3: all the gambling and the fast fantasy football and this
- 20:51Speaker 3: that and the other uh and hopefully they get to
- 20:53Speaker 3: the bottom and because if some if there was a
- 20:55Speaker 3: mistake that person needs to be fired and uh things
- 21:00Speaker 3: need to be made just for for that mistake.
- 21:03Speaker 2: What is the craziest teammate versus teammate dispute that you
- 21:07Speaker 2: were ever close to or witnessed? I don't know if
- 21:11Speaker 2: you heard about what happened in Tennessee with a boy
- 21:15Speaker 2: going out to the car to get a gun. But
- 21:19Speaker 2: what's the craziest one that you were around?
- 21:21Speaker 3: I mean, what is going on with people's minds? We've
- 21:27Speaker 3: always handled disputes in the locker room. And I've seen fights.
- 21:31Speaker 3: I've seen fights. arguments, nothing more than hashing it out
- 21:37Speaker 3: in the locker room, especially as grown men. That gets handled.
- 21:41Speaker 3: This is old school. Now, new school, it's way different now.
- 21:44Speaker 3: I don't know. It's like social media fighting instead of
- 21:48Speaker 3: just hanging like men and talking face-to-face. So I've seen that.
- 21:53Speaker 3: I've seen over, you know, card playing, gambling amongst each other.
- 21:59Speaker 3: and money being owed, that could get pretty tenacious and
- 22:03Speaker 3: heightened between adults and males. But nothing to the extent
- 22:10Speaker 3: of going to get a gun and wanting to shoot
- 22:12Speaker 3: someone over whatever happened. Like, that is crazy, and he
- 22:19Speaker 3: needs help because that's not– I mean, I was telling
- 22:23Speaker 3: one of my assistants, like, that's premeditative, pre– Did I
- 22:28Speaker 3: say it right? Premeditated?
- 22:29Speaker 2: Premeditated, yeah, yeah.
- 22:30Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, yeah. Like, hold on, man. You brought a gun,
- 22:34Speaker 3: which is against the rules. Like, you could get fired
- 22:38Speaker 3: and reprimanded for bringing a firearm on NFL, like, boundaries. Like,
- 22:47Speaker 3: as soon as you drive into the parking lot of
- 22:48Speaker 3: an NFL facility, we have certain rules. Like, you can't
- 22:51Speaker 3: do this, you can't do that. So, bringing a firearm
- 22:53Speaker 3: in your car on the... NFL landscape or whatever, like
- 23:01Speaker 3: that's already, you're already breaking a rule. Now you're, you,
- 23:04Speaker 3: you're doing it to her somewhat like that's, that's bad ball. You,
- 23:08Speaker 3: you got, you got issues and I don't, I wouldn't be,
- 23:12Speaker 3: I don't want him as a teammate, let alone someone
- 23:14Speaker 3: around me.
- 23:16Speaker 2: Pretty, pretty crazy. Pretty nuts. Robert Sala has, You know,
- 23:22Speaker 2: he stood at the podium and spoke to the guy's
- 23:24Speaker 2: character and said, this is a cry for help. This
- 23:28Speaker 2: is not a criminal act. And I was kind of
- 23:30Speaker 2: surprised by his comment there.
- 23:32Speaker 3: Yeah. Hey, Coach Sala, like, if you really believed in
- 23:35Speaker 3: this kid and knew he had something wrong, then why
- 23:37Speaker 3: didn't you help him? Like, we're so after the fact.
- 23:42Speaker 3: I think he said, and I could be totally wrong,
- 23:44Speaker 3: but I think he said that he had been battling
- 23:48Speaker 3: some things internally. Well, if that is the case, like, what,
- 23:54Speaker 3: what are you doing? You're, you have people, many people
- 23:58Speaker 3: that are required, not required, but there to help guys
- 24:02Speaker 3: that are going through things like that. And you, you
- 24:05Speaker 3: basically were like, just gloss it over. So do you
- 24:07Speaker 3: really care about the kid? I don't know. Like, I
- 24:10Speaker 3: think you're trying to stay face and try to say
- 24:12Speaker 3: what the kid is, but this kid has some serious
- 24:15Speaker 3: issues with them. So you're like going to bat, like
- 24:17Speaker 3: you're willing to put your name on this kid who
- 24:19Speaker 3: just tried to kill a teammate. I got it. I
- 24:22Speaker 3: don't know about that, babe. I think you're, you're, you're
- 24:25Speaker 3: stepping down the wrong street or putting your name on
- 24:27Speaker 3: somebody's character. Like you're, you're really going to have to
- 24:31Speaker 3: vouch for this kid's character after he tried to go
- 24:33Speaker 3: to his car to grab a gun and kill a teammate. Hello. Yeah.
- 24:39Speaker 3: Does anyone else see a problem with this?
- 24:41Speaker 2: It wouldn't be me.
- 24:43Speaker 3: What? But my goodness.
- 24:47Speaker 2: You NFL guys are in a different world, man. That's
- 24:50Speaker 2: crazy stuff.
- 24:51Speaker 3: I guess so. I guess so. We do live in
- 24:54Speaker 3: our own little world. We don't know what's going on
- 24:56Speaker 3: in the real world. And that's true. We don't know
- 24:59Speaker 3: what's going on in the world. Are we in a war?
- 25:06Speaker 3: Who's the president? We don't know. We're just going at
- 25:11Speaker 3: our own pace. But this, man, you're tripping. Yeah.
- 25:17Speaker 2: Gnarly stuff. All right, man. Appreciate your time. We'll cut
- 25:21Speaker 2: you loose. Good luck against mission Hills. Go kill the
- 25:25Speaker 2: Grizzlies or whatever you're.
- 25:26Speaker 3: Supposed to say. We got them. All right. See you, bro.
- 25:31Speaker 2: See you, dude. That's Eric. Well, the Utah football legend,
- 25:35Speaker 2: the NFL veteran.
