- 0:30Speaker 2: Blow every One and welcome again. It's Chalk Jocket's John D. Flippo,
- 0:34the Super Bowl winning Eagles quarterbacks coach from twenty seventeen.
- 0:38You went through the ring ceremony, yougles, just had it
- 0:41last Friday. The ring is ridiculous. What do you remember
- 0:43about it?
- 0:44Speaker 3: I just remember how first class it was.
- 0:47Speaker 4: I mean, you know, the Eagles, mister Lorie blew my
- 0:50I was in Minnesota at the time.
- 0:52Speaker 3: I remind your audience.
- 0:54Speaker 4: I left after that year ago, be the office corner
- 0:56of the Vikings, and you know, they blew my wife
- 0:58and I back, and and uh, it was just a
- 1:01whole It was just a first class event all the
- 1:03way and exactly how you would expect the Eagles to
- 1:07to handle such a cool event. And it was really special.
- 1:09Obviously it was the first one in franchise history.
- 1:11Speaker 2: So John, as we look at it and going back,
- 1:14we'll start with how otz are planned for quarterbacks coaches
- 1:18and offense coordinators. So you've been both. What could you
- 1:20tell us about developing a quarterback working with young quarterbacks?
- 1:24But let's start with Carson Wentz. What was your job
- 1:27and how did you prepare him in those OTAs?
- 1:30Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, just to rewind, I mean Carson was
- 1:33not slated to play. I mean we were going to
- 1:35sit him beside behind Sam, and Sam had had a
- 1:38really good spring, he really good spring, and we were
- 1:43really excited for him to be our starter.
- 1:46Speaker 3: And you know, my, my, my main job, you know.
- 1:50Speaker 4: Was to make sure Carson, you know, stayed up to
- 1:52speed with everything, and you know, obviously he'd had the
- 1:55benefit of being in OTAs in that spring. But you know,
- 1:59once you get the training camp, it's that's when the
- 2:02I hate to use this verbot, but that's when the
- 2:03bolts start flying a little bit. And sure, that's where
- 2:06it's you know, it really matters, and you got to
- 2:09get you're starting to get ready for a game and
- 2:10who's going to make the team and all those things.
- 2:13Speaker 3: So there's so many.
- 2:14Speaker 4: More factors involved in training camp than there is in
- 2:17OTA's which is a little bit more relaxed, I want
- 2:19to say relaxed, but just a different feel. So we
- 2:23want to make sure Carson was up to speed, you know,
- 2:26with everything and little things like you know, staying after
- 2:31and throwing the whole practice script of the reps he
- 2:34didn't get, and and just making sure when he was
- 2:39ready to go, he would be ready to go. Obviously
- 2:41that that journey started a little sooner than later than
- 2:44we all thought.
- 2:45Speaker 2: How do you handle a veteran quarterback comparably to a
- 2:48rookie like wentz in OTAs you know, it's.
- 2:50Speaker 4: It's unique because when you have a rookie like Carson
- 2:53is learning, I mean, you got to start from the
- 2:54ground up with him and spend a little bit more
- 2:56extra time where a guy like a Sam Bradford or
- 2:59Carson Palmer, another veteran I worked with, like that. You
- 3:01gotta find ways to challenge those guys' minds every day
- 3:04when they show up so they don't think that they're
- 3:06wasting time. Now, it was a little bit different for
- 3:09Sam that year because he was learning a new offense
- 3:11as well. So, but if you're if you're if it
- 3:15was going into year three or year four in the
- 3:17same offense with a veteran quarterback, you gotta find ways
- 3:20to challenge them. And what I mean by that is, hey,
- 3:23maybe we taking the odd overload pressure day, or we're
- 3:26gonna talk double a's today and and and how we're
- 3:28gonna handle that throughout the course of the year. And
- 3:30that way, you have some things that are I don't
- 3:32want nothing's ever set in stone until the clock hit zero,
- 3:35but the play a game. But different things that ideas
- 3:40that you might use during the season where it's a
- 3:43little bit slower pace and it's not a you know,
- 3:46a pace where you're just trying to fit everything in
- 3:48before the next week. So you pick a topic of
- 3:50the day, and like I said, it might be, hey,
- 3:52this is that we're gonna be quarters coverage. What are
- 3:54our best quarters beaters? Or we're best quarter quarter half beaters.
- 3:58Let's talk cover two today. How are we gonna attack
- 4:00cover two? Like and so that's how you try to
- 4:03challenge a veteran where you know it's a rookie that
- 4:06I've had a lot of them. It's it's literally they're
- 4:07just trying to you know, one of the cadence.
- 4:10Speaker 2: The install people bring up the install what does that?
- 4:13How does that work.
- 4:14Speaker 3: Well, you know you try to.
- 4:17Speaker 4: My thing is is it starts really for the rookies
- 4:19right after the draft because you have your your your
- 4:21rookie mini camp right then and and that's where they
- 4:24get a dabble of the installation. And you know, teams
- 4:29handle rookie minnie camp differently. Some bring in a bunch
- 4:31of players and have real practice, Others just want to
- 4:33get the individual down.
- 4:35Speaker 3: Me.
- 4:35Speaker 4: You know, personally, if I had a choice, I would
- 4:38want real practice, especially if you have a rookie quarterback.
- 4:41I mean you want him to break the huddle and
- 4:43call the play in the huddle and extra play and
- 4:45those things. And but teams handle that differently. And uh,
- 4:52you know ours with Carson started right away, I mean
- 4:54in rookie mini camp and we had I thought he
- 4:56had a really good rookie mini camp and and it.
- 4:58Speaker 3: Was just that first holding block.
- 5:00Speaker 2: Let's get to you as an offensive coordinator, So how
- 5:02does it differ between you being a quarterback coach over
- 5:05the years an offensive coordinator in terms of game planning
- 5:08and managing coaches? Like, is it way different than being
- 5:10quarterbacks coach?
- 5:11Speaker 3: Not even the same animal.
- 5:12Speaker 4: I mean, it's it's you're responsible instead of being responsible
- 5:15for three or four guys, you're responsible for thirty. You know,
- 5:19you know and so, and you know you're you're setting
- 5:22the tone for the whole offensive staff, and you know
- 5:26you're you're relaying the head coach's message to your side
- 5:29of the ball.
- 5:29Speaker 2: Question twenty fifteen, you were your your first time as
- 5:32a coordinator. Okay, you know this is in. People followed
- 5:35your career know that you did a brilliant job. It
- 5:37helped get you an interview with the footy nine ers
- 5:39as head coaching candidate. Right, you're going through this and
- 5:42a guy that you interviewed, I do want to mention here.
- 5:44I think Scott Leffler's the new Eagles quarterbacks coaches that.
- 5:47Speaker 3: Cord I interviewed Scott. Scott is at the time.
- 5:51Speaker 4: I'm ninety nine percent positive he was the offensive coordinator
- 5:53Virginia Tech.
- 5:54Speaker 3: Okay at the time, and.
- 5:57Speaker 4: I had known Scott through the Great Vine and had
- 6:01heard Scott speak a few times, and you know, was
- 6:04really impressed with him, Like really, I thought he was
- 6:06an impressive, really impressive guy. And so we interviewed Scott.
- 6:10And Scott's from Cleveland. He's from Cleveland, So.
- 6:13Speaker 3: This has been like coming home for him.
- 6:14Speaker 4: I mean, you know, grew up a Browns fan, the
- 6:16whole deal, right, He freaking interviewed like a champ.
- 6:19Speaker 3: He was once.
- 6:19Speaker 2: He's a little bit older than Brady, I know. I
- 6:21think they were around there at the same time.
- 6:22Speaker 3: He was ready his back up at Michigan, right for
- 6:24roommates and stuff.
- 6:25Speaker 2: Yeah, okay, yeah, so you said he's very impressive. Yeah,
- 6:29and you're known to coach Hart. That was what made
- 6:31you one of the best in the league for many
- 6:33years a quarterback coaching, because you you you're on your guys.
- 6:35You cheat your big teacher, do you know, because you
- 6:38I know you it was between what him and Kevin
- 6:40O'Connell and you.
- 6:41Speaker 3: Had Connel, right, Yeah, so.
- 6:43Speaker 2: You obviously was down to those two guys.
- 6:44Speaker 3: You like both, do you because you didn't coach with
- 6:47lefflerd before?
- 6:48Speaker 2: So how did you know how he coaches?
- 6:50Speaker 3: I just been watching him.
- 6:51Speaker 4: I'd heardhim speaking the clinic and watching him and listening
- 6:54to him, and I knew that, you know, he was
- 6:56the kind of guy that I thought would be really
- 6:58good for our staff.
- 6:59Speaker 3: And I just always had a ton of respect for Scott.
- 7:03Speaker 2: Coach one of the things I love about training campus.
- 7:06I watched coaches coach. I've seen you in Napa, California.
- 7:09I've seen you coach in Many, Minnesota and that like
- 7:12I don't know what you call it's like a campus, right,
- 7:16was it an Egan or is it? I saw you
- 7:18in Jacksonville. So you've been a coordinator, you know a
- 7:21bunch of times obviously. So now we're in training camp, right,
- 7:25So as a coordinator when you come in right, and
- 7:28and with Cleveland specifically because you came in new you
- 7:33were with the Raiders before that is the quarterbacks coach Minnesota.
- 7:37You came in new because you were the Eagles quarterbacks
- 7:39coach Jacksonville. You came in new because you were with
- 7:42Minnesota the year before. Do you look at what so
- 7:45you go and do with tape study?
- 7:46Speaker 3: Right? Do you go back and watch the tape? Yeah
- 7:49you do? Okay, Yeah, you also want you also want
- 7:54to form your own opinions? Sure? Right?
- 7:57Speaker 2: Do you look at their blocking schemes and what kind
- 8:00of personnel and personal to.
- 8:02Speaker 4: Me, like when you're going in brand new like that,
- 8:05you look more personnel. What does this guy do well? Right?
- 8:10Speaker 3: What do we do well? What were we deficient, you know,
- 8:13and that's that's how you know what to do.
- 8:15Speaker 2: So so as a offensive coordinator, what's the challenge like
- 8:19to manage coaches? Because you were saying in another our
- 8:21previous show here as a quarterbacks coach, you know, you
- 8:23just work with four guys. Now you have to work
- 8:25with ten to twelve position coaches and all these players.
- 8:29What was your twenty fifteen let's talk about that as
- 8:31a young coach, how did did you did you did
- 8:34you know? Did you get mentored? Do you know how
- 8:36to do this from other coaches over the years?
- 8:37Speaker 3: Do you do it? I feel?
- 8:38Speaker 4: And how you've experienced it? You know, it's it's it's
- 8:43challenging at times, it really is. I mean, because you
- 8:47know there's you got to find out, just like what
- 8:49makes players tick, what makes coaches tick? And you know
- 8:53there's certain coaches that come with an idea and if
- 8:55you don't use it, there's they get a little butt hurt.
- 8:58And there's some guys that if you don't use it
- 8:59r id then they're like cool on to the next one,
- 9:02and it's like they understand the maybe the usually the
- 9:04guys that have been in that chair before, I understand
- 9:07that you know, you know, I can use every one
- 9:09of my ideas and that's okay. Sure, I'm not going
- 9:12to tell you what stop I was at. But the
- 9:15head coach says, hey, I think we're struggling a little.
- 9:19Speaker 3: Bit in running back pass protection.
- 9:21Speaker 4: And I said, I said, I agree with you, coach,
- 9:24I said, I one d percent agree. I said, he goes,
- 9:26can we do that drill we did the other day
- 9:28an individual with the backs where they're squaring up the
- 9:30linebackers and blocking them in the hole. I said absolutely.
- 9:33So I go in into office staff meeting and I said, hey,
- 9:35you know, can we do that to the run back coach?
- 9:37Speaker 3: Can we do that again?
- 9:38Speaker 4: And you know he's like, well, you know told me
- 9:41what to do. I'm like, my guys, I'm like, okay,
- 9:46just so you guys know, I'm not you can't and
- 9:48as the coordinator, you can't be like, well, the head
- 9:50coach told me that, you know, like you got to
- 9:52protect the headman.
- 9:53Speaker 3: Too, Like you know what I'm saying. Like, so there's
- 9:55a there's a balancing act. You know that unless you've
- 9:59been in that chair, you just don't no happens.
- 10:02Speaker 2: Are there times where you're in a practice no matter
- 10:04where you were. Maybe maybe we'll talk a little bit
- 10:06about the Eagles right here in twenty seventeen, Go, holy bleep,
- 10:11we might be honto something. These practices are so damn good,
- 10:14Like we've really taken another level. We ever see that?
- 10:16Speaker 3: Yeah, I.
- 10:20Speaker 4: Knew I thought we'd be pretty good. You know, we
- 10:23all thought pretty good. It was year two for Carson.
- 10:27Thrown him in there, and he'd made some mistakes and
- 10:29played good at times and struggled at times. And at sixteen,
- 10:32right since sixteen, and you could make a case that
- 10:36if Carson doesn't play his rookie year, he doesn't have
- 10:39the season he had before he got hurt.
- 10:41Speaker 3: Here two, I want to put all my chips on
- 10:44the table and bet on that.
- 10:46Speaker 2: Right, What do you think of joint practices?
- 10:49Speaker 3: I love him? Why effort?
- 10:51Speaker 4: It's you see it, it's there's there's a.
- 10:55Speaker 3: Different couple, a lot of reasons. Okay, I'll go down
- 10:59the list here. Sure.
- 11:00Speaker 4: Number one as simple as this. You get to see
- 11:02another color jersey in front of you, and some guys,
- 11:06especially young some young guys, they freak out a little bit, man,
- 11:08when they see another color jersey in front of them,
- 11:10and you want to see if they forget every single
- 11:12one of their techniques and fundamentals and all this. Number two,
- 11:17if we were facing if like in Philly with Jim Schwartz,
- 11:21we were a four down team. Me personally, like if
- 11:25I would have gone against a three four team in
- 11:27joint practice.
- 11:28Speaker 3: Now you can work all your schemes against a different
- 11:30fun you know what I'm saying. Sure, and it just
- 11:36I love it. It's long.
- 11:37Speaker 4: But here's the thing. The best joint practice I've ever
- 11:41been a part of was when we was when I
- 11:44was in Philly and we joint practiced with Miami. Adam
- 11:49Gase was the head coach of the Dolphins and obviously
- 11:52Coach Peterson was the head coach of the Eagles, and
- 11:54the head coaches had a pact. If you fought in practice,
- 12:00you got thrown out of practice and you didn't get
- 12:02to play in the game.
- 12:03Speaker 3: So we practiced against them on Wednesday, Thursday, we were
- 12:06off Friday and.
- 12:06Speaker 4: Scrimmaged and play the game on them I think at
- 12:09home on Saturday, and so there was no fighting.
- 12:13Speaker 3: There was. It was.
- 12:17Speaker 4: Two days of the most productive practices that I've ever
- 12:20been a part of.
- 12:20Speaker 3: And I've seen some absolute meles.
