- 0:09Speaker 1: Inside the Birds is back. What's going on everybody?
- 0:14Speaker 2: Jeff Mosher, Adam kaplan training camps here. It's Tuesday, players
- 0:19are gonna report it's in the Novacare Complex. We're gonna
- 0:22continue our series a little later in the week on
- 0:25just the issues facing the team and the answers for
- 0:28those issues. But Adam, with training camp starting today and
- 0:32with the front office moves announced the night before, we're
- 0:35gonna go through a little bit of that and also
- 0:37describe the protocol for what the training camp is like
- 0:40for the first few days.
- 0:41Speaker 1: It's not like it used to be.
- 0:42Speaker 2: We talked about that a little bit in the podcast
- 0:45last time we did on how much has changed. But
- 0:48so we'll kind of go through where the first few
- 0:50days are like, the schedule and get into what people
- 0:53should expect at least here for the first part of
- 0:56training camp. But are you excited training camp? It's always good?
- 0:58Speaker 3: Yeah, man, yeah, yeah. Will be the first practice and
- 1:01it'll be late the first five days of light. We
- 1:03we'll go a little bit more detail. We actually got
- 1:07the language so we could help folks understand what it
- 1:10is and what it isn't. But I'll tell you what
- 1:13there's some interesting front office moves, and we learned some
- 1:15stuff from sources around the league who were plugged into
- 1:17the Eagles, who gave us some good background and yeah,
- 1:20it's uh, it's interesting. And I got to tell you though,
- 1:24One thing I do want to mention is we did it.
- 1:26We did it. Two chalk talks this week with Super
- 1:29Bowl winning. It was quarterbacks coach John D. Filippo, I
- 1:32gotta tell you, man, and he had some stuff with
- 1:34Scott Leffler. It was phenomenal. I'm sure you heard the
- 1:38story that the story he told about Scott was phenomenal, hilarious.
- 1:41Speaker 1: I know what not next time I go to Ohio,
- 1:43I'll tell you that.
- 1:44Speaker 3: You got it right right. But he came very close
- 1:48to hiring Scott as his quarterbacks coach. Was either him
- 1:50or Kevin O'Connell in twenty fifteen. Uh so he was
- 1:53down with those two and then he chose O'Connell. And
- 1:57Kevin's a pretty good head coach and play call and
- 1:59all that. But yeah, so we've got another one, and
- 2:02we've got another one for our Patreon members coming I
- 2:05guess today, and that's the training camp one. We also
- 2:08we had the OTA one and then we have a
- 2:10training camp one and we've got a live stream on
- 2:12Wednesday night. We'll go inside training camp, give you what happened,
- 2:16only what happened what you need to know, but what
- 2:20the first day look like, and whole lots of notes
- 2:22and so forth. We had Our Lives live stream a
- 2:25couple of weeks ago with Vinny Curry, which is phenomenal.
- 2:28It was awesome. We got Greg co Sel coming up
- 2:30in August at some point, can't wait for that. We
- 2:32got discord Patreon dot com slash Inside of the Birds.
- 2:36You got to become a member. Man, you're missing on
- 2:37if you're a diehard Eagle fan who wants the inside skinny,
- 2:40It's stuff you're not gonna get anywhere. Trust If you
- 2:42don't believe us, ask anyone who's at live stream on Wednesday.
- 2:45They know what I'm talking about. Frank Eddie, both Chris
- 2:47and Judy, Al Travis, many others they know. They know.
- 2:51Speaker 2: Oh listen, we got great feedback just on the John D.
- 2:54Filippo one itself, the two parter that's up there. But
- 2:58you can tell we get close to the season, you
- 3:00and I get a little amped up and we start to,
- 3:02you know, really ratchet things up. So having Vinnie Curry
- 3:04do the last ask an Eagle was so awesome. People
- 3:07loved There was so much love between the people are
- 3:11Patreon members and Vinnie kind of reciprocating it.
- 3:13Speaker 1: It was just really cool for.
- 3:15Speaker 2: You and I have to just sit back there and
- 3:16moderate it and let people see and ask the questions
- 3:19and get answers.
- 3:20Speaker 3: You know, wash story, we're getting close. The Washburn story
- 3:24is worth repriceive emission. That's one of those that's all
- 3:27gonna give you. The Washburn story is one of those
- 3:30Alzheimer's like this didn't happen. Yes, it did happen. It's
- 3:33a great story, nothing bad, but it's just funny. You
- 3:35never know how things are gonna work out.
- 3:36Speaker 1: So anyway, there you go. All right, let's get into
- 3:39the front office moves here.
- 3:40Speaker 2: Adam says, you know, some of the big one was
- 3:43one that got reported on and we discussed it when
- 3:46it happened. But obviously we know that Joe Douglass is
- 3:48coming back to the team. He's gonna be a senior
- 3:51personnel director. We'll get into that in a second. But
- 3:54there were obviously, you know, the Eagles lost a couple
- 3:56of scouts as well, they lost, you know, their senior
- 4:00director of college scouting, Anthony Patch to the Raiders. They
- 4:03lost Brandon Hunt, who was in charge of scouting as.
- 4:07Speaker 1: Well to the Raiders, lost to e LUs. There was
- 4:09somebody else.
- 4:10Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean these are actually not scouts. These are executives.
- 4:13Speaker 1: Yeah, I should say executive.
- 4:14Speaker 4: That's right.
- 4:14Speaker 3: They're definitely scouts. Yeah, yeah, no, they they in fact,
- 4:17some of their scouts got promoted. But yeah, no, you're right.
- 4:21They lost Anthony Patch and Brandon Hunt to the Raiders.
- 4:26And one thing, as we reported back in March, you know,
- 4:30they they've had a big actually been last tw years.
- 4:32We've been talking about it. They've had a big budget
- 4:36cut and spending in terms of the scouting department and
- 4:40also the non football ops. But football ops, they've done
- 4:43it too. So some guys just are not going to
- 4:45be replaced. That's just what they're doing. That's it's not
- 4:49how I felt. It's he's got to do what he's
- 4:51got to do. He's only have so much money in
- 4:52their budget for scouting, and we'll see what happens. But
- 4:56we told you about a couple of these. Ryan Myers,
- 4:58nickname is Tiny, he's been with the Eagles. Actually Tom
- 5:01Gamble brought him in, who was the eagles former personal director.
- 5:04Speaker 1: Yep.
- 5:05Speaker 3: So after Gamble left, Howie to his credit Kep Myers,
- 5:09and he's been a West Coast scalt. He got promoted
- 5:12a couple of years ago. Was assistant college director. Now
- 5:14he is their college director, so good for him. Matt Holland,
- 5:17who was their Midwest scout. He's actually had a couple
- 5:21scouting areas, but Midwest was his last. He's there assistants
- 5:26college director. Good for Matt.
- 5:28Speaker 1: Yep.
- 5:28Speaker 3: Jared Kilbourne, who's was a college in pro scout, he's
- 5:31now assistant director of pro scouting. I'm not familiar with
- 5:34Terrence Bracton Braxton. He was a football opsin Intorney's now
- 5:37a pro scout's good for him. That's a promotion. And
- 5:39I mean, I'm Rod Streeter man. Here's how long I
- 5:42fought Rod Streeter. I think he was at I think
- 5:48the local pro days, the local you know, the college day,
- 5:53you know for local players. He wasn't drafted, but actually
- 5:56met him. I don't know the guy, but I met
- 5:58him when he was with the Raiders, because you don't
- 5:59when I go to NAPA. He went to Temp I
- 6:02just wanted to talk to him a little bit. He's
- 6:04he's worked his way up. He's he was an NFS scout.
- 6:07Now we's go scout. I think actually talked about this
- 6:09a month ago. That was the word that we were getting.
- 6:10He was gonna be moved up. So that's good. It's
- 6:13good how he recognizes these guys and promotes him in
- 6:15Duke Tobin, whose DAT is the director of player Personnel
- 6:18for the Bengals. And boy Duke got quoted a little bit.
- 6:22I don't know if he saw it ye with the
- 6:25contract machine for the first round pick. Oops, it shouldn't
- 6:27have done that. But anyway, his son, Duke Tobin was
- 6:31promoted from a scouting assistant to Midlands area scouts. So
- 6:34good for those guys in the scouting department.
- 6:36Speaker 1: I love that term Midlands, not Midwest, but the Midlands.
- 6:41Speaker 4: You know.
- 6:41Speaker 2: I think we're gonna have to get a clarification of
- 6:45it why they call it Midlands and how that might
- 6:47differ from Midwest.
- 6:48Speaker 1: But that's fine, you know.
- 6:50Speaker 3: What, that's a great That's what I'm thinking, Like, I
- 6:52don't remember them actually calling it Midlands, so is it?
- 6:57You know what, now you're gonna make me look up.
- 6:59Speaker 2: What's I I suspect that you know they they're scouting
- 7:03regions are different than sometimes how you know, non sports
- 7:07people view regions. For example, Pennsylvania can be a Northeast
- 7:13for some it could be sort of part of the
- 7:15Midwest because Pittsburgh.
- 7:16Speaker 1: Sometimes they I know.
- 7:17Speaker 2: Some teams cut states in half so that it's not
- 7:20always the quote unquote region it's you get like like,
- 7:24for example, I'll give you a good example southwest. Right,
- 7:29there are parts of Texas that are considered the west
- 7:33or the southwest scout, but there's eastern parts of Texas
- 7:36that'll be the southeast scout. So they'll take a state
- 7:38and divide it in half, so it doesn't always fit
- 7:41the correct region.
- 7:42Speaker 1: Like the way we learned regions are so midlands.
- 7:45Speaker 2: I might just I would imagine that the Plains states
- 7:48would fall in there like the Dakota's, but maybe not
- 7:52say Ohio, Ohio might be part of the northeast, or
- 7:54the eastern part of the state like Ohio State or
- 7:57Cleveland schools might fall into the north East area potentially.
- 8:01So I don't want to I don't want to speak
- 8:03for the Eagles. I'm just saying I know that certain
- 8:05teams define regions differently, and I.
- 8:07Speaker 3: Think what how he's done over the years, Like like
- 8:10Ryan Myers, he still was their West Coast scout, plus
- 8:13he was assistant scouting director. So Matt Holland still may
- 8:16be as assistant scouting college director. Still having the Midwest
- 8:20area because they don't have a Midwest scout technically anymore
- 8:22with the title, but just the way they've done it
- 8:25for years on our Holley, that's pretty much I would
- 8:27I would bet that Matt Hollands still has the Midwest.
- 8:30And on your point, then you've got the Midland scout,
- 8:33which is Duke Tobin. They don't well, I mean if
- 8:37you just look at area scouts, they don't have a
- 8:39lot of them. But again, some guys have a dual role.
- 8:43Matt Holland. As we just talked about Ben Ajelan. It's
- 8:47pretty cool though. Ben Ajelana played at Villanova, yep, who
- 8:50is in the league as an offensive linean. The's a
- 8:53Northeast scout which he got a couple of years ago.
- 8:55Speaker 1: I saw him a couple of times on the circuit.
- 8:58I saw him.
- 8:59Speaker 2: Was he at the Della one, the Temple one, I
- 9:01mean the likes of Delaware falls in that northeastern bracket.
- 9:04Speaker 1: I think, yeah, I saw him at the Delaware one. Yeah.
- 9:07Speaker 3: Sure, So so to move this along here, yeah, they're not.
- 9:09Something that's been new is that they're just not filling
- 9:12a lot of holes. Now we'll get to Joe Douglas soon,
- 9:16but some of these got like some of the they've
- 9:18got Matt Russell to do some stuff still, Dave Colwell
- 9:21still there, so these guys could also take on some
- 9:24extra responsiblit if they need him to. And obviously Joe
- 9:27Douglas who's moved back to the areas we understand it
- 9:30as we talk. We'll talk about him now. So his
- 9:33title is Senior Personnel Director, advisor to Howie, the general manager.
- 9:37So what we understand is the Eagles really stepped it
- 9:39up to make sure they got him, whether it's money
- 9:43or making sure like they they when they're allowed to
- 9:46contact them, they contact like this was done rather quickly,
- 9:49like they they they were on this, like they wanted
- 9:53him back in the building. Despite any rumors that him
- 9:56and Howie weren't weren't closer, did in well, that's totally
- 9:58false that actually they kept in touch and they still
- 10:02had a really good relationship. So good for Joe to
- 10:04come back. And because he note because he as you know,
- 10:08he became a general manager and before that he was
- 10:10a personal out director try to learn the pro game.
- 10:12So now the great thing for how he is it's
- 10:14whatever how he needs him to do. He can do
- 10:18pro or college or both. That that that's helpful with
- 10:20all these people Jeff who've left.
- 10:22Speaker 2: Yeah, I think I think there's a lot of asset
- 10:24that he brings back, not only in scouting, but remember
- 10:27he brought in some really good personnel from Baltimore where
- 10:30he cut his teeth as a scout coming up before
- 10:33he came to the Eagles, right. He brought Ian Cunningham
- 10:35to the organization. He brought Andy Widel to the organization.
- 10:39These are two assistant gms right now. Did he bring
- 10:42Catherine Rage. I can't remember if.
- 10:43Speaker 1: He did or did not, but either way he did, Ye,
- 10:46yes he did.
- 10:47Speaker 2: So he brought some pretty successful people into the organization.
- 10:52So I think just having that also for Howie there
- 10:56just another I mean, I think it.
- 10:57Speaker 1: Was smart for the Eagles to step it up.
- 10:59Speaker 2: You can image that while most gms, whether it's Mike mccagnan,
- 11:03or John Izick from the Jets may have struggled after
- 11:07Joe Douglas came from too much success both with the
- 11:09Ravens and the Eagles for me to think that he
- 11:12was not going to be wanted. I'm sure he was
- 11:14a wanted guy out there. So that was good on
- 11:16the Eagles to step them up.
- 11:17Speaker 3: Yeah, and understand with Joe Douglas. Look, it's hard to
- 11:20win with the Jets. I'm not saying he did a
- 11:21great job, but yes, he missed on Zach Wilson, we
- 11:25get that. But he also had the draft with Brees Hall,
- 11:29Sauce Gardner, Jermaine Johnson. You could go through the picks
- 11:31that he absolutely nailed. Nobody gets him, all right, you know,
- 11:34nobody gets him all right. But he was very valued
- 11:36here to come back, and good for the Eagles to
- 11:37do that. And I'll tell you what, this is a
- 11:41really interesting hire in football operations. Okay, I don't know how.
- 11:46I don't know how to say his last name. It
- 11:48might his first name might be some meat mm hm.
- 11:51He's hired as a qualitative analyst. But he was part
- 11:54of the team that the when the NFL's big data
- 11:57ball and you could actually read is. I actually took
- 12:00a look at it a couple of days ago. It's
- 12:05his his report that he turned in his exposing coverage
- 12:09tells in the pre snap phase doesn't work for the Phillies.
- 12:12So that's kind of cool man that that, you know what,
- 12:14because because data guys get all that, all you know
- 12:17is numbers. But if you could get data tells and
- 12:20pre snap, hey, that's interesting. So good good for him.
- 12:23Speaker 1: Mm hmmm.
- 12:24Speaker 3: He was a new hire Grant Writers Hires Football Transactions
- 12:28coordinator Molly Rottinghouses added as football operations coordinate. My understanding
- 12:35is she replaced somebody else he left the organization or
- 12:38footbops and Leaf Thorston. If anybody knows who Leaf is,
- 12:43I guess it's a he software defeated.
- 12:46Speaker 1: Not conquer some Scandinavian land.
- 12:48Speaker 3: Yea, Garrett, you know for those fifty but look good good, hey,
- 12:54listen again, there's could be opportunity. And then in football persons,
- 12:56I want to mention these because these guys were promoted.
- 12:59So James Gilman, who's been there for a little bit.
- 13:01He was he was director of Football Analytics, now senior
- 13:05director of Football Research and Strategy. And by the way,
- 13:07that's what Alec Halby had many years ago, so that's
- 13:10what you should remember. That name. James Gilman, John Leo
- 13:15l i U director, he's now director Football Analytics. He
- 13:17was assistant director of foot Palytics. And Zach Stever who
- 13:22was their quantitative analysts. He's now assistant director of Football
- 13:24Research and Strategy. Data. Eagles do great, a great job
- 13:28with data. We we've talked about the the all the
- 13:32numbers before the draft and what they use, the RAS
- 13:35scorers and all that stuff. They have a very good
- 13:37success in that stuff, so you can't knock it. And
- 13:40it's a big deal. So good for them. And yeah,
- 13:42we went over the new hires and look there. The
- 13:45thing is, because of all these people leaving, there's going
- 13:47to be opportunity for people to prove themselves. And you
- 13:50know Howie has recognized you know, Ryan Myers, Matt Holland
- 13:54who's been with the Eagles for several years, and Duke
- 13:57Tobin junior is very young guy. Rod Steward obviously, didn't
- 14:00you know he retired not too long ago. So these
- 14:03guys are getting recognized and good for them.
- 14:05Speaker 1: Hey, by the way, the Mally rotting House addition, she
- 14:09is the football.
- 14:10Speaker 3: What was the term again, coordinator?
- 14:12Speaker 1: Yeah, she's interesting.
- 14:14Speaker 2: If this is the same Molly rotten House that I
- 14:16think it is. She was a football she was like
- 14:19a coach and a recruiting specialist at Wisconsin like university. Correct, Yes,
- 14:24and he also worked at Bowling Green. I think when
- 14:26Scott Leftflert that.
- 14:28Speaker 3: I didn't know is that right? See, I didn't I
- 14:31heard Wisconsin.
- 14:32Speaker 2: Ah, that's operations intern And I think she might be
- 14:37from Pennsylvania.
- 14:38Speaker 1: And funny, when I was at Penn.
- 14:39Speaker 2: State they had a really good volleyball player named Heidi
- 14:42rotting House, and I wonder if they are related.
- 14:45Speaker 1: I'm gonna have to dig into that now I was
- 14:46at Penn State. No, it can't be.
- 14:48Speaker 3: This might be our daughter because I was last name. Yeah,
- 14:51I mean, I mean the head be the same family,
- 14:53cousin or whatever. Daughter.
- 14:55Speaker 2: Yeah, So interesting stuff. They're really very very interesting. Hire
- 14:59to look out there, Leaf Thorson. I'm going to have
- 15:01fun with that one for a while.
- 15:03Speaker 3: Leaf Dorson, right, right, right, So so we'll see. Well,
- 15:08you know, you can't keep losing people. It's just and
- 15:11I know where the Eagles used to block a lot
- 15:13of people they're not blocking many people anymore. It's heard
- 15:16the same, heard the same. Yeah, So that's the word
- 15:19around the league and personnel people have told us that
- 15:22they're they're for whatever reason, it's not totally clear, but
- 15:25they're they're not blocking people. So right, it is what
- 15:28it is. But we'll see how they do. But you
- 15:31know how, he's been drafted real well twenty one on
- 15:33and but you know what, if you keep losing really
- 15:36good people, it could catch up to you. So let's
- 15:38hope that you can keep these people.
- 15:40Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm glad you said that. So to sort of
- 15:41put a bow in this.
- 15:42Speaker 2: I think it was good of them to make Ryan
- 15:44Meyers Tiny, who is not tiny, but that's nickname, uh,
- 15:47the director of college scouting, because he that's sort of
- 15:50like the next move for him. He worked under I
- 15:53guess Anthony Patch and some other guys for quite a
- 15:55while and he deserved that. And Matt Holland's been with
- 15:57the organization for a while, so this was the natural,
- 16:01logical next step. Jared Kilburn has been with the team
- 16:03for a couple of years as well too, as well
- 16:05as Streeter and Tobin. But I think for Myers and
- 16:09Holland especially. It's good because it keeps that continuity. They've
- 16:12worked with Howie now, they've worked with Nick for many years.
- 16:15They know what the coaching staff wants. The coaching staff
- 16:17can talk to them, and that's always good. If you
- 16:19have too many guys coming in and coming out, it
- 16:21could cause a little bit of like that learning period
- 16:24that you don't want.
- 16:24Speaker 1: You want everybody on the same page.
- 16:26Speaker 3: Yeah, Myers also worked in one of the minor leagues.
- 16:34It was I'm talking like before he came there, he
- 16:38was he worked with the Niners, and then before that
- 16:39he worked in like one of those like UFL type
- 16:42leagues that folded. So yeah, he's he's been around a
- 16:45long time.
- 16:46Speaker 1: Awesome, good stuff.
- 16:47Speaker 2: All right, let's shift our focus to the Eagles training camp.
- 16:50Obviously again begins today. Everybody's got a report and then
- 16:54practices begin start on Wednesday. Before we get into that,
- 16:58we're gonna pause and.
- 16:59Speaker 1: Hear a great word.
- 16:59Speaker 2: You got to hear this word from our friends at
- 17:01Skymotor Cars.
- 17:03Speaker 4: Sky Motor Cars and West Cut. There's a different build
- 17:05of dealership all the Texas. One look with their highline

- 17:53idea of skymotor Cars dot com. But you can really
- 17:56benefit from the on hand of experience of going in
- 17:59and getting the met Brett Shoulder and his great staff
- 18:01just like a lot of eagles do.
- 18:03Speaker 1: All right, So treat yourself, reward yourself for.
- 18:05Speaker 2: The best car shopping experience there is out there sky
- 18:08Motor Cars, all right. The camp schedule, So the big
- 18:14thing is Adam, and this has been a couple of
- 18:16years now, is that there's this sort of ramp up
- 18:19acceleration period. I know, people get excited for the first
- 18:22day and then you know, you and I come into
- 18:24a pot and be like, yeah, the first practice was
- 18:26like forty five minutes and fifteen of it was stretching, right. So,
- 18:30but that's the way it works now in the NFL.
- 18:32It's it's a big part of how teams operate. The
- 18:34Eagles aren't the only one. And ramping up to that
- 18:38point where you want to get into pads, which might
- 18:41be the following week, is is really what they've found
- 18:43for the bodies?
- 18:44Speaker 3: Yep, yep. As we talked about it on the last show,
- 18:47and we'll we'll go further with it. Jeff Miller, who
- 18:52oversees health and safety, I've talked to Jeff several times
- 18:54about this. They get data from every team and they
- 18:58collect it on terms of injuries, when they happen, what
- 19:01it is, and how it happened. And their data showed
- 19:04it's very simple. The first week the players back are
- 19:07when they have the most injuries, strains and sprains, particularly
- 19:11strains because of the heat and sure they may be
- 19:15working out of their own. But they're working out on
- 19:17their own and they're not being they're not they don't
- 19:19have if they don't have a personal trainer, if they're
- 19:22not doing it the way the Eagles do it, it's not
- 19:24going to be quite as good. So they added these
- 19:27rules in recent years. There's no life tackling, no no blocking.
- 19:34In those first five days, there's only certain things you
- 19:36could do when I blocking. There's certain things you can
- 19:38do with blocking, but you can't engage. You'll see. And
- 19:42then once you get past that five days, then then
- 19:44it gets hot, then it get then then there it's
- 19:47pretty much anything goes. And the thing is you can't
- 19:51practice for more than three days in a row. And
- 19:54you'll see the first week when we talked about the schedule.
- 19:57So Wednesday ten am, Thursday ten am walk through, Friday, Saturday,
- 20:02Yes they're practicing three days, but not three in a row.
- 20:05You practice Saturday at ten am, Sunday off and then
- 20:10they have the first full week of practices in week
- 20:13two Monday Tuesday at ten am Wednesday walk through. Everything
- 20:17by the way is at no overcare and by the way.
- 20:20Speaker 1: Through are closed. Just to let people know. Walk throughs
- 20:22are close to the media.
- 20:23Speaker 3: Right exactly, it's not really I know it's a it's
- 20:27the way that I understand is I've actually been to
- 20:29one A couple of teams led the media to watch them.
- 20:32It's a it's it's it's it's a brisk walk or
- 20:35jog through. You're running over certain plays. But it's really
- 20:39out of practice. Not I don't call it a practice,
- 20:41but it's it's a job through. You're mentally they're challenging
- 20:43you to make sure in the right spot. And its Syrian.
- 20:44It's talked about it. He wants to make sure players
- 20:46know where they're supposed to be. So next week it's Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday,
- 20:50walk through, Thursday, Friday, practice, Saturday off again. Noe're they're
- 20:55not practicing three days in a row yet, so they're
- 20:59off Setaturday. That next Saturday, Sunday they practice. Then that
- 21:05week three is the first week of the preseason where
- 21:07they host the Bengals. So they were actually practice three
- 21:11days in a row because they're practicing Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday,
- 21:15walk through, Wednesday, obviously Thursday home game. So you see
- 21:19the way that they do it now. Part of it
- 21:22is because they feel that the NFL feels that because
- 21:26it's so hot in July. Pretty much no matter where
- 21:29you are, except for Seattle. I've been there several times.
- 21:33They practice off of a lake. It does get humid,
- 21:36but it's rarely over eighty, but it does get humid.
- 21:40Santa Clara can get in the low eighties but doesn't
- 21:43get human, but it does get hot high seventies, low eighties,
- 21:46and where the Niners practice. So what happens is early
- 21:49on they focus on fundamentals conditioning, a lot of individual drills,
- 21:55sort of like seven on seven, but it's basically an
- 21:58extension out of OTAs, and they really want to focus
- 22:02on the players condition because they got to see what
- 22:04the first Remember they've been off five or six weeks.
- 22:06They haven't seen them. They're not allowed to do anything
- 22:08with them. And this is injury prevention. They just the
- 22:11worst thing is when you have these ligor and hamstring
- 22:13or coinstrains and they don't go away, and it sucks
- 22:17for younger players. First or second, youar players can't have this,
- 22:19they need the work.
- 22:20Speaker 2: I agree with you, although I did after we went
- 22:23and covered the joint practice in Miami a couple of
- 22:26years ago. I stopped feeling sorry for anybody. That was
- 22:29the hottest that I've ever been in my entire life.
- 22:33I've been standing next to a fireplace, all right.
- 22:37Speaker 3: So twenty eleven lockout. Coming off of it, I stupidly
- 22:41visited the Texans. How dumb am I in early August,
- 22:46knowing that they set the national record for most consecutive
- 22:49days of over one hundred. I just so dumb. So
- 22:52you know it's bad when they said to bring two
- 22:54T shirts for two shirts and bring a taalafe, have one, dude, Okay,
- 22:59so you just now, I've been to Jacksonville, that swampland
- 23:01in the summer. It's bad. It's the worst humidity in
- 23:04the country. But the Texas heat and then and then
- 23:06if you you all know this, if you live in Texas,
- 23:08San Antonio or Houston, Austin, whatever. But it was so
- 23:12bad it was unbearable, and I learned my lesson, never
- 23:16go there if you don't have to.
- 23:17Speaker 2: In August I worked with a guy at Wilmington, Kevin Noonan.
- 23:20You remember him, Kevin, make him a columnists. We both
- 23:23had to go out to Houston in September when the
- 23:26Eagles played the first they played week one there. I
- 23:28can't think it was two thousand and seven, eight, okay,
- 23:31And it was my first time to Houston. Oh and
- 23:34I in that in that month, no, first time in
- 23:36Houston general. I had been to Dallas, I think, the
- 23:38first time in Houston in September. And I said to Kevin,
- 23:41is it humid in Houston? And he looked at me,
- 23:45you know, like the way an old sage writer would
- 23:46look at a young kid who's stupid and go, Houston
- 23:49invented humidity.
- 23:51Speaker 1: I was like, oh, greatty much.
- 23:53Speaker 3: Now Jacksonville, Yeah, that's funny that Houston.
- 23:57Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, I mean Relorida though, you get that breeze
- 24:00a little bit.
- 24:01Speaker 1: Jacksonville, Dude in swampy.
- 24:03Speaker 3: It's near Unifi, Florida. In Gainesville. Man, it's brutal. At
- 24:08least they built now in Tampa they have and now
- 24:11Jackson the Jaguars also they have their indoor facilities so
- 24:13when it rains, and by the way, they get a
- 24:15ton of rain near the pop up storms like we get.
- 24:18Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 24:19Speaker 3: But actually it's funny because the dolphins were practicing there
- 24:23for one of the joint practices and uh, it rained,
- 24:27so they brought it in and it's really tough to
- 24:29practice indoors with two teams. It's just hard. Yeah, just hard,
- 24:33you know. So it's just really not made these practice facilities,
- 24:36as you know, because you've been in the practice bubble
- 24:38and never care. It's terrible. It's too small.
- 24:40Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, it's not good, all right.
- 24:43Speaker 2: So to your to your point to put a real
- 24:45emphasis on the point you're making. For three weeks, that
- 24:48seems like a lot of practices, but it's only about five, six, seven, eight,
- 24:53not like ten, ten practices before the first game, that
- 24:57Thursday night game against the Bengal, So that's really not
- 25:01a whole lot. But as you know, sometimes one or
- 25:03two practices at and feels like an eternity because we
- 25:06could we we've done pods, hour and a half pods
- 25:09off everything we saw one practice.
- 25:11Speaker 1: So I look forward.
- 25:11Speaker 2: Oh yeah, well i'll be there Thursday, by the way.
- 25:14Speaker 3: I will be there Saturday and hopefully on Wednesday. We'll
- 25:17see what if my schedule allows it, but we'll have
- 25:18it doesn't matter, we'll have we'll have what everyone whatever,
- 25:21everyone needs to know, they'll know it. Trust me, absolutely no.
- 25:24Because now the one thing I would tell you, and
- 25:27I've mentioned this before, I I do things differently than
- 25:30other reporters. I go and look at physical conditioning. I
- 25:33want to see what kind of shape they're in, like
- 25:34we we reported. Uh, I don't know. Three years when
- 25:37my lot was told to lose weight and he was
- 25:39like four O two something like that and an ota
- 25:42they told him to lose weight. He lost weight. He
- 25:44look great because I remember being there and I remember
- 25:46thinking and O, but he looks heavy. But I had
- 25:48no idea, no way, I sound like I'm weighing him.
- 25:51But then I saw Miles Sanders when he was ripped physically,
- 25:55like there was a year he had his best year.
- 25:57It just happened. I saw May. I'm like, all right,
- 26:00see in training camp he looks so good and he was.
- 26:03He looked good because you know he ate an injury history.
- 26:05That's enough matters, man. I learned that from a coach
- 26:08to look for that stuff many years ago. When I
- 26:10go on my tour, I look for that stuff. And
- 26:14I know we've mentioned this before that while the practices
- 26:18are light, it's not about how long they practice. It's
- 26:21actually about what they do. I don't care how long
- 26:22they practice for. I want to see what they do actually,
- 26:26so and I mentioned this with Isaiah Rodgers. Yes, the
- 26:28practices were late when Rogers has been out Ringo last summer,
- 26:33but you could see in less those drills. I mean
- 26:37they weren't wearing pads or anything, but whatever they were
- 26:39allowed to do like Rogers was clearly ahead. And even
- 26:44if Ringo took the like, I know some reports, oh
- 26:47this guy had the first step. So what it's pay
- 26:50attention to rotations, to how they rotate, in how they're coached,
- 26:57how they're coach, Right, Bobby King, we learned valuable lesson
- 27:00might be the best inside backers coaching football.
- 27:03Speaker 2: I don't know one who gets You can see, and
- 27:05you're not supposed to report what said or if someone's admonished,
- 27:08but sure you can see when a guy is spending
- 27:10a lot of time with one person as opposed to another,
- 27:14where if you feel like he's coaching somebody up a
- 27:16lot more than he has to than the other guy.
- 27:18Speaker 3: All right, what you just said, and I'm going to
- 27:19help some folks who get to go to overkare. We're
- 27:21gonna give you a little inside football. It's called is he
- 27:23a high rep player? High or a high rep guy?
- 27:26That means it's a guy who needs additional reps because
- 27:29he's not getting it where they're not happy, where they
- 27:32decide that they're not going to kick him off the
- 27:34field or something. Getting back to the line, they go, hey,
- 27:36stay in there, run it again. Because the guy wouldn't
- 27:38getting it. It's called a high rep guy. Yep. That's
- 27:41an inside football coaching note that it goes on in
- 27:44every camp. Not every rookie's going to get it. Doesn't
- 27:46mean he's dumb, right, It's just that he needs extra reps.
- 27:50That's all I mean. So look, it happens. It happens
- 27:53on both sides of the football. And I could tell
- 27:55you I could see it in front of me when
- 27:57Jeremy Macklin was a rookie and maclenn didn't run the
- 28:01right route and he got on him. And I mean
- 28:02he got on him.
- 28:04Speaker 1: Yep. He had he had a tough training camp.
- 28:06Speaker 3: Yeah, And Jeremy turned out to be a really good player.
- 28:08I think he was coaching on high school.
- 28:09Speaker 1: He had had some drops. I mean he didn't really drops.
- 28:12Speaker 2: Yesunt return he was such a good explosive punt returner
- 28:15in college and did not translate to the NFL for
- 28:18whatever reason.
- 28:18Speaker 1: At least not early on in his career.
- 28:20Speaker 2: And yeah, but no, but you're right, he straightened it
- 28:22out and got himself. He was a smart, intelligent kid.
- 28:24He's a really mature kid, Macklin. But yeah, it just
- 28:27took him a little extra time.
- 28:29Speaker 3: Watch the route run and watch the timing with the quarterbacks.
- 28:32That that to me because uh, like, I'll be I
- 28:34want to see Kyle McCord. I know he doesn't have
- 28:36a gun. We knew this going in, but he said
- 28:39timing a rhythm type quarterback. I want to see how
- 28:41comes out of his hand. Look, he looked good in
- 28:42no tas, but that's double a baseball. I want to
- 28:45see when it really counts in training camp, when everybody's there.
- 28:49I know he's gonna be running with a third team,
- 28:51but you know what, Hey, these are the kind of
- 28:53guys you're going to be growing up with in the league.
- 28:55This year. You got you got to get the job done,
- 28:57you know. So I'm looking forward to that. There are
- 28:59just certain things and all these tight andswer seven of them.
- 29:03That's a good battle man for that backup jet. The
- 29:05backup job is wide open behind Goddard.
- 29:08Speaker 1: Yep.
- 29:09Speaker 3: That I'm very interesting to see how that develops. It
- 29:11like Harshon Bryant's more talent than all of them. But
- 29:14Arshon Bryant, Look, the guy didn't stuck. He didn't stick
- 29:17with the Browns and the Raiders. That you gotta point
- 29:19that out, that that match.
- 29:21Speaker 2: No, it's like one of those witches got to give
- 29:23is the players of the two organizations right now is
- 29:26finding out YEA.
- 29:28Speaker 1: By the way, Andrew Decheko has been doing it.
- 29:29Speaker 2: He is doing his pre camp fifty three offensive defense
- 29:33and make sure you're checking that out on the checko daily.
- 29:36I will tell you his picks at tight end. We're fascinating.
- 29:39Speaker 3: I don't know, I haven't heard yet. I am out,
- 29:42But wait, is he keeping three?
- 29:44Speaker 1: I'm not. I'm not telling you. I'm not.
- 29:46Speaker 3: You have to all right.
- 29:49Speaker 1: That's gonna do it for this edition of Inside the Verse.
- 29:51Speaker 2: Next time you hear from us, we will finish off
- 29:53that issues and answer series and then we will be
- 29:56right toward Eagles training camp, practices and observations. That's gonna
