- 0:29I Hate Talking: Welcome to episode 32 of I Hate Talking.
- 0:32I Hate Talking: Hi everyone.
- 0:33I Hate Talking: So we do know what episode number it is this time, assuredly, and we also know the position of our own bodies.
- 0:42I Hate Talking: Oh, yeah, I was like, wait, well, yes, I'm sitting in my chair at my desk.
- 0:48I Hate Talking: And you would have known that even with your eyes closed?
- 0:51I Hate Talking: Yes.
- 0:52I Hate Talking: And that's due to a ability that the human body has called proprioception.
- 0:59I Hate Talking: Proprioception.
- 1:01I Hate Talking: Proprioception.
- 1:04I Hate Talking: OK, what does that mean?
- 1:05I Hate Talking: So that is the brain's ability to know the position of the body without any particular movement or stimulus outside of its own thinking.
- 1:20I Hate Talking: So you don't need to be touched or move or feel anything to know the position of your own body.
- 1:28I Hate Talking: OK.
- 1:29I Hate Talking: Like how you can feed yourself with your eyes closed.
- 1:34I Hate Talking: Yes, exactly.
- 1:36I Hate Talking: I suppose you could do that.
- 1:37I Hate Talking: I don't know if I've ever tried to do that.
- 1:39I Hate Talking: Uh, I'm pretty sure I have.
- 1:42I Hate Talking: You just were pretending to see what it would be like if you were blind, or you're just experimenting with proprioception.
- 1:49I Hate Talking: I don't know, like, or like in games.
- 1:51I Hate Talking: It's like a very common, right, like close your eyes and, or I'm just really sleepy when I eat.
- 1:57I Hate Talking: People do that, right?
- 1:59I Hate Talking: I'm not sure our listeners can comment, email, send us a text, let us know if you have ever attempted to eat with your eyes closed as some form of game or self-entertainment.
- 2:12I Hate Talking: Yeah.
- 2:13I Hate Talking: OK.
- 2:13I Hate Talking: Well, there is a game that we have that we play as a family, I forget what it's called right now, but you put these like goggles on and it makes everything upside down.
- 2:24I Hate Talking: And then you're supposed to draw pictures or do activities and everything's upside down, right?
- 2:29I Hate Talking: It's really fun, we all laugh, and a way that you cheat on that game is you close your eyes, and then you're able to draw the picture better or do stuff like that.
- 2:41I Hate Talking: Well, it's not cheating if it's not prohibited in the rules.
- 2:45I Hate Talking: That's true.
- 2:46I Hate Talking: It doesn't say not to.
- 2:47I Hate Talking: But you, instead of looking upside down and doing things, cause even for that, eating, cause that's one of the tasks, is like taking a bite of something with those goggles on.
- 2:59I Hate Talking: But when you're looking and you're upside down, the proprioception doesn't work.
- 3:05I Hate Talking: I suppose that's true because, yes, you're getting mixed signals from your body position in terms of proprioception versus your ocular input that is seeing something that is reporting a different experience.
- 3:21I Hate Talking: Right.
- 3:21I Hate Talking: So yeah, when we have those goggles on that make us feel like we're upside down, when we're putting something in our mouths or drawing, we completely missed the mark.
- 3:30I Hate Talking: But if you close your eyes, even with the goggles on, We successfully can do those tasks.
- 3:37I Hate Talking: And some people have described proprioception as the sixth sense.
- 3:43I Hate Talking: So in addition to your smell and taste and touch and sight and hearing, that proprioception is the 6th sense.
- 3:53I Hate Talking: So, no shade to Bruce Willis and his 6th sense, but uh that is, I think, a more legitimate 6th sense that everyone has.
- 4:03I Hate Talking: Yeah, I like that one better than seeing dead people.
- 4:06I Hate Talking: Precisely.
- 4:09I Hate Talking: And speaking of seeing things that aren't real, we'll be talking about a dream -- in this -- episode.
- 4:17I Hate Talking: Oh, is this a dream you had this week?
- 4:20I Hate Talking: -- It -- is because, OK, y'all, I dream a lot.
- 4:24I Hate Talking: I remember my dreams often.
- 4:27I Hate Talking: Adam doesn't seem to, and he kept talking in his sleep the other night.
- 4:32I Hate Talking: Is this the night that you were talking?
- 4:34I Hate Talking: Precisely.
- 4:34I Hate Talking: It was so weird.
- 4:36I Hate Talking: I kept like thinking you were talking to me or something.
- 4:39I Hate Talking: I'd wake up and be like, what?
- 4:40I Hate Talking: Are you OK?
- 4:41I Hate Talking: What's going on?
- 4:42I Hate Talking: And you're like, huh?
- 4:43I Hate Talking: Like you're obviously asleep and it was weird that you were having conversations in your sleep cause that doesn't normally happen.
- 4:50I Hate Talking: It is very odd and not only do I not remember my dreams typically.
- 4:59I Hate Talking: It is also very typical that I don't even remember dreaming at all.
- 5:04I Hate Talking: Yeah, that's what you say.
- 5:06I Hate Talking: Me and most of our kids remember our dreams very vividly, almost every night, but one of our kids doesn't and you don't.
- 5:13I Hate Talking: But yeah, so I asked the next morning, I was like, what happened last night?
- 5:17I Hate Talking: Were you OK?
- 5:18I Hate Talking: You were talking in your sleep, which I'm not sure I've ever experienced with you.
- 5:25I Hate Talking: Some of my siblings talk in their sleep, and that's something I grew up with, sharing a room with them.
- 5:30I Hate Talking: I don't know if you've ever talked in your sleep at night.
- 5:33I Hate Talking: And you were like, oh, I just had some really weird dreams last night.
- 5:38I Hate Talking: So, OK, tell me about these dreams you had or dream.
- 5:41I Hate Talking: Yes, it is singular dream.
- 5:42I Hate Talking: It was only one dream that I recall.
- 5:46I Hate Talking: I may have had more than one, but there was only one that I distinctly remember and actually again remember quite a few details about.
- 5:56I Hate Talking: And there are 4 significant takeaways from this dream that I will share with you as well as our audience.
- 6:05I Hate Talking: Like, you think the dream meant something?
- 6:07I Hate Talking: I do.
- 6:08I Hate Talking: OK.
- 6:10I Hate Talking: Oh, good dose of dreams.
- 6:12I Hate Talking: I can't wait.
- 6:13I Hate Talking: So the dream to set the stage took place outside.
- 6:21I Hate Talking: It was perhaps at like some sort of residence where a number of people were sitting in chairs on the lawn.
- 6:32I Hate Talking: Did you know these people?
- 6:33I Hate Talking: You were there.
- 6:34I Hate Talking: Oh, that's good.
- 6:35I Hate Talking: Pretty sure there were other people that I knew from various things that We have within our lives as different -- social engagements like -- present day things or just in life present day things, yes, OK, so present people and me check.
- 6:54I Hate Talking: Sitting in chairs in the lawn of a backyard of a residence.
- 6:58I Hate Talking: OK, I believe that so far that's realistic.
- 7:01I Hate Talking: And there may have been a fire pit, not quite sure, but there was definitely some sort of light source that was different than an electrical light in terms of like a floodlight or this is like detailed OK back porch light of some sort, yes OK.
- 7:19I Hate Talking: Probably fire.
- 7:21I Hate Talking: I mean, we always have fire pits with our friends, got it.
- 7:23I Hate Talking: Then there is a stairway that goes up to a landing on the 2nd floor, and this is steel, some sort of gray metal interwoven grating of some kind.
- 7:39I Hate Talking: And the specific thing of note is that there are no railings on the stairway, as well as no railings on the landing, which is at least 12 to 14 ft elevated above the lawn.
- 7:54I Hate Talking: Wow, that's scary.
- 7:55I Hate Talking: That's not up to code.
- 7:56I Hate Talking: Indeed, so.
- 7:59I Hate Talking: I guess, shall I continue in The narrative of the dream or pause for the particular takeaways at each step.
- 8:10I Hate Talking: Tell me the whole dream.
- 8:11I Hate Talking: This is super interesting cause this is very detailed and very uncharacteristic of you.
- 8:18I Hate Talking: Precisely.
- 8:19I Hate Talking: OK, go on.
- 8:20I Hate Talking: So we're hanging out.
- 8:22I Hate Talking: Are we happy or are we having a good time, or is this not a good time?
- 8:26I Hate Talking: It's a some sort of social event, yes, -- so it was -- trying to get you to sit next to me.
- 8:33I Hate Talking: No, -- this is that had that -- had that had no part.
- 8:36I Hate Talking: You do play a part in the dream, but it's, it's not that one.
- 8:39I Hate Talking: -- Oh -- no.
- 8:42I Hate Talking: -- We'll -- see.
- 8:42I Hate Talking: Oh no.
- 8:44I Hate Talking: OK, keep going.
- 8:45I Hate Talking: So that's the stage we have the line, a number of people, you included from real social interactions.
- 8:54I Hate Talking: The fire pit, uh, stairway, no railing, the landing, no railing, some sort of light source on the second floor.
- 9:04I Hate Talking: It was on top, like the fireplace or something was on the 2nd floor.
- 9:10I Hate Talking: No, there's just a like a floodlight or or a uh some sort of back porch light type thing at the back of the residence on the landing.
- 9:21I Hate Talking: -- This is -- OK.
- 9:22I Hate Talking: Yeah, -- I'm following -- it.
- 9:24I Hate Talking: Then our smallest child makes an appearance.
- 9:27I Hate Talking: Oh no, I feel like this is gonna be sad.
- 9:30I Hate Talking: And He is very rambunctious and energetic and is running up the stairs.
- 9:39I Hate Talking: With no railing, very realistic.
- 9:43I Hate Talking: And going to the landing and in some way trying to interact with the light source on the second level landing.
- 9:51I Hate Talking: OK, I already, I feel like I don't like where this is going.
- 9:54I Hate Talking: He's our kid that has fallen and broken his collarbone.
- 9:58I Hate Talking: From playground equipment at parks before.
- 10:01I Hate Talking: So this is scary.
- 10:03I Hate Talking: So then it does shift from an enjoyable social experience of some sort where everybody's having a good time to one of concern because everyone, including myself, begin yelling.
- 10:22I Hate Talking: To this small child to be careful or come down or just, you know, all the different things that one might expect to be communicated to a small child in potential danger 14 ft above the ground with no railings on the stairway or landing.
- 10:42I Hate Talking: Scary.
- 10:44I Hate Talking: I don't like that.
- 10:45I Hate Talking: So this small child then becomes very animated and becomes unstable on his own feet and is going in many different directions trying to sort of see what's going on or losing his balance or something is happening.
- 11:06I Hate Talking: -- Because -- everyone's yelling at him -- because I -- just feel like everyone stop -- talking -- like and -- then -- I'd run up there and get him.
- 11:15I Hate Talking: He tumbles backwards off of the landing.
- 11:19I Hate Talking: Oh no.
- 11:21I Hate Talking: This is so sad.
- 11:22I Hate Talking: So, I'm trying to remember there's 4 things, 4 things.
- 11:27I Hate Talking: And this is perhaps even as I've rehearsed some of this, interesting to note that it is difficult to remember dreams.
- 11:34I Hate Talking: And that it's Somewhat Hard to recall the exact specifics.
- 11:40I Hate Talking: Are you like, do you have a feeling?
- 11:42I Hate Talking: Sometimes I can't remember exacts, but I have like a feeling in my stomach, or like in my shoulders of how I felt.
- 11:50I Hate Talking: Yeah, I have to think and pause here.
- 11:53I Hate Talking: Ah yes, OK, I remember the next thing that happens.
- 11:56I Hate Talking: So then, I get up out of my chair.
- 11:59I Hate Talking: Because we're all just sitting there screaming the whole time and, and I wasn't as, you know, I guess it's a dream, right?
- 12:07I Hate Talking: So it doesn't really exactly flow in like a normal state of actual physical ability, but I'm midway up the stairs.
- 12:18I Hate Talking: As he is falling backwards off of this 14 ft platform.
- 12:24I Hate Talking: And then I cannot reach him.
- 12:27I Hate Talking: I could not catch him, but I was able to extend my leg and my foot.
- 12:35I Hate Talking: And Nudge him As he was falling past me.
- 12:40I Hate Talking: And he then landed on his feet.
- 12:44I Hate Talking: Wow, you're a hero.
- 12:48I Hate Talking: And then There was still some sort of injury because he was crying and.
- 12:54I Hate Talking: Making it known to the world that there was a problem.
- 12:58I Hate Talking: So, I rushed to him and.
- 13:03I Hate Talking: Held him and inspected his legs and feet.
- 13:07I Hate Talking: OK.
- 13:08I Hate Talking: And then I believe that's sort of where it ends perhaps, maybe I, I do seem to recall there's maybe like emergency services called or something of that nature, but then it sort of just peters out and Vague recollection, and I don't really recall a specific ending.
- 13:27I Hate Talking: So do we know what the light source was or what happened?
- 13:32I Hate Talking: So I guess perhaps there's even a 5th and 6th thing that I don't think are really like life lessons per se, but are perhaps.
- 13:41I Hate Talking: Reasons and an impetus for what actually happened in the dream.
- 13:46I Hate Talking: So the light source played a part in why this particular child was going up the stairs to this platform because they wanted to interact with that particular light source.
- 13:57I Hate Talking: OK.
- 13:58I Hate Talking: And then upon inspection, his right leg or ankle was noticeably broken.
- 14:07I Hate Talking: And It is interesting to note that ever since a hike that we've done a few weeks ago, my right ankle has been hurting, so perhaps a relationship there.
- 14:19I Hate Talking: OK.
- 14:20I Hate Talking: So that's the 5th and 6th things that again are not really particular takeaways or life lessons, but Perhaps Some of the impetus for why these particular details are in the said dream.
- 14:34I Hate Talking: OK, so do you want to explain the rest of it, or can I give my real quick overview, just hearing it what I think.
- 14:40I Hate Talking: Yeah, go ahead.
- 14:42I Hate Talking: Well, just you saying like my right ankle hurt and his right ankle was broken, and we were up high when we went on that hike.
- 14:49I Hate Talking: We were really high.
- 14:51I Hate Talking: We went with our kids.
- 14:53I Hate Talking: It was high and like some parts were scary.
- 14:56I Hate Talking: I kept telling our one kid not that kid that you're talking about, a different kid like stay on the path.
- 15:00I Hate Talking: Because if you just stepped off, it was a steep drop.
- 15:04I Hate Talking: And they were, you know, just being little kids and playing and I had to keep nudging them closer to the wall.
- 15:12I Hate Talking: And there was even a part that you went down first and you would take one candidate at a time, cause it was too narrow.
- 15:19I Hate Talking: And steep to send all of us.
- 15:22I Hate Talking: So we'd send one kid and they'd come back to me, and then we'd send the next kid.
- 15:27I Hate Talking: And so maybe like the light source of how pretty it was and the waterfalls we saw, and like, but your ankle hurting and just, I don't know, maybe you're self-conscious of remembering how scary it was with these little kids.
- 15:41I Hate Talking: And how we could have easily fallen.
- 15:44I Hate Talking: Without railings.
- 15:46I Hate Talking: That's my quick second from hearing this just right now.
- 15:50I Hate Talking: So tell me your takeaways.
- 15:52I Hate Talking: So for takeaways in particular.
- 15:55I Hate Talking: One is how humankind has built things that are dangerous in and of themselves that would not really necessarily occur in nature.
- 16:10I Hate Talking: Now, obviously you're describing things on this hike that are relatively natural with some cliff facings and trails that go right along the edge of particular dangers, but those would be few and far between, right, in terms of like a normal terrain and things of that nature.
- 16:33I Hate Talking: And if you did encounter that, it would be Relatively easy to see that that was a danger.
- 16:40I Hate Talking: Whereas this particular stairway and platform are manufactured in such a way that it seems normal, but because there is no guide rail or railing that it is in fact dangerous and that humankind actually manufactures danger.
- 17:02I Hate Talking: So as another example, the average maximum running speed of a person is anywhere from 17 to 18, maybe 19 MPH.
- 17:17I Hate Talking: There are Olympic athletes that will run much faster than that in the 20s, uh, up to high 20 MPH.
- 17:26I Hate Talking: But for your normal person, you're gonna be 17, maybe 18 MPH.
- 17:33I Hate Talking: And it is interesting to note that the human body can withstand an impact with little to no damage at 18 to 19 MPH.
- 17:45I Hate Talking: Huh, OK.
- 17:48I Hate Talking: So if you run as fast as you can into a natural formation, such as a tree or some sort of Natural object.
- 18:02I Hate Talking: So we're not talking about like a brick wall or something like that where it is again manmade because that will have actually a different impact, but Taking into account the example of a tree, if you run into a tree at 19 miles an hour, there's a pretty, pretty good chance that you will survive and have relatively minor injuries, huh, except for Sonny Bono.
- 18:26I Hate Talking: Who?
- 18:28I Hate Talking: Sonny and Cher.
- 18:30I Hate Talking: This is before my time.
- 18:32I Hate Talking: Well it was before mine too.
- 18:34I Hate Talking: That's how he passed was he ran into a tree.
- 18:37I Hate Talking: He was skiing and ran into a tree.
- 18:39I Hate Talking: Well, skiing, exactly, this proves my point, that skiing is not a natural activity of a person, but that skis were manufactured and therefore, Cause this particular person to travel at a higher velocity than they would normally -- be able to achieve -- faster than 18 miles an hour.
- 19:01I Hate Talking: Absolutely.
- 19:02I Hate Talking: Oh, OK.
- 19:03I Hate Talking: And I think most people are going to travel at faster than 18 miles an hour almost every day inside of a motorized vehicle, which again is not natural, and that is why a lot of people will have serious injuries.
- 19:19I Hate Talking: If they are in a car accident, is because they're traveling faster than this 18 to 19 MPH.
- 19:25I Hate Talking: Interesting, OK.
- 19:27I Hate Talking: So that is the first takeaway is that humankind has manufactured danger that is outside of the natural limits of the human body.
- 19:37I Hate Talking: OK.
- 19:38I Hate Talking: Number 2 is something that you already alluded to is that the particular child in question was caused to fall in some form or fashion as a direct output of the yelling and shouting to be careful.
- 19:59I Hate Talking: Yeah, I see that a lot, especially at parks or whatnot.
- 20:02I Hate Talking: Often, if you're like, stop, slow down or, you know, be careful, the kids starts getting more wobbly.
- 20:09I Hate Talking: Versus like in my heart, so many times, I want to scream those things cause I'm so anxious watching them, but if I'm quiet, And just watch them, they successfully do it.
- 20:21I Hate Talking: I mean, obviously, not always, sometimes you do have to intervene, but that screaming will startle them and make them second guess themselves and make them nervous, and if they're nervous, then they're more likely to fall.
- 20:35I Hate Talking: Precisely, and that is the exact takeaway is that.
- 20:38I Hate Talking: There are people yelling or shouting at them that that could cause that reaction of being startled and therefore actually put them into a place of greater danger because they are now not as surefooted or whatever the case may be.
- 20:56I Hate Talking: I myself was counted among those people yelling and shouting at this particular child in the dream and not only I think is there the takeaway that we should remain quiet.
- 21:08I Hate Talking: At certain points that also perhaps we can change the temperament of the communication as well as what is being particularly communicated in a way that is soft and encouraging.
- 21:25I Hate Talking: And instead of saying, don't do this or even be careful is put your hand here or put your foot there so that you can achieve the desired output and be able to help in that regard.
- 21:40I Hate Talking: So that is the second takeaway.
- 21:42I Hate Talking: OK.
- 21:42I Hate Talking: So we have so far manufactured danger and the shouting which caused.
- 21:50I Hate Talking: The Startlement in this particular child.
- 21:54I Hate Talking: And then third is the non-reaction or the non-action, I guess, of everyone around me except myself where I feel as I'm the only one taking action to Take action or to be of some value to this particular child in this situation.
- 22:19I Hate Talking: Well, that goes back probably way back into your life and your mental beliefs.
- 22:27I Hate Talking: So I think very often you tend to live in a way that if you don't do it, it won't get done.
- 22:34I Hate Talking: Yes, it won't get done or won't get done correctly.
- 22:38I Hate Talking: So, this is somewhat self-critical because that may be an incorrect view.
- 22:46I Hate Talking: You just put a lot of pressure on yourself, always.
- 22:48I Hate Talking: Like in that situation, you did the right thing.
- 22:51I Hate Talking: You had to go save your child.
- 22:53I Hate Talking: I think sometimes, you know, if you take a step back and breathe, let someone else try or let someone else take the lead, and they can.
- 23:02I Hate Talking: You do so well at it.
- 23:04I Hate Talking: I think people just tend to sit back and let you do it.
- 23:08I Hate Talking: And you know how to do many things well.
- 23:12I Hate Talking: And I do think that goes back to something that you've been working on where it's.
- 23:16I Hate Talking: Doesn't have to always be you for everything.
- 23:19I Hate Talking: Indeed.
- 23:21I Hate Talking: So, that is the 3rd takeaway.
- 23:23I Hate Talking: Is that in some form or fashion, I am seeing myself as the only one taking action, but not necessarily saying that it is the correct thing or even the real thing.
- 23:36I Hate Talking: And then 4 and then 4th and final is as I was extending my leg and foot to nudge the particular child.
- 23:49I Hate Talking: To change from an action of tumbling backwards to redirecting his motion to one that made him land on his feet.
- 24:01I Hate Talking: Is that You cannot necessarily.
- 24:05I Hate Talking: Avoid every dangerous situation or every negative outcome, but perhaps you can make it better that I could not reach out and collect the child or I could not prevent the fall to begin with, but that by extending my leg and my foot, I did rest his backwards rotation.
- 24:29I Hate Talking: Allowing him to land on his feet instead of his head.
- 24:33I Hate Talking: Nice.
- 24:35I Hate Talking: So, what was that for again?
- 24:39I Hate Talking: Just like summed up.
- 24:41I Hate Talking: By a nudge, you can avoid a.
- 24:45I Hate Talking: Terrible outcome and instead achieve a bad outcome.
- 24:51I Hate Talking: So small change, like a small change can actually do a lot.
- 24:57I Hate Talking: Versus doing nothing at all.
- 24:59I Hate Talking: Almost But I think the point also is that There wasn't even the ability to do a big change.
- 25:09I Hate Talking: That the only thing I could do was a small change, and the small change resulted from the avoidance of a catastrophic outcome to one that was simply bad and unwanted.
- 25:22I Hate Talking: -- So -- you did what you could.
- 25:24I Hate Talking: Yes.
- 25:25I Hate Talking: Even if it wasn't what you wanted to do, completely, you did what your limits allowed you to do.
- 25:32I Hate Talking: Correct.
- 25:32I Hate Talking: OK.
- 25:33I Hate Talking: And that's it.
- 25:34I Hate Talking: That's the 4 takeaways that I had was manufactured danger.
- 25:38I Hate Talking: And the shouting, causing startlement.
- 25:43I Hate Talking: And the action that I took.
- 25:47I Hate Talking: As well as the nudge that resulted in the avoidance of a catastrophic outcome.
- 25:54I Hate Talking: And then there was the 5th and 6th things which were.
- 25:58I Hate Talking: I don't know.
- 26:01I Hate Talking: See, there, there you go.
- 26:05I Hate Talking: So.
- 26:05I Hate Talking: Oh yes, that's right.
- 26:06I Hate Talking: The light source as like the impetus of this whole scenario and then my ankle hurting that also was.
- 26:13I Hate Talking: Reflective in the fact that that was a particular outcome of this incident as well.
- 26:19I Hate Talking: -- That -- was pretty realistic dream.
- 26:21I Hate Talking: When you start talking about a light source, I started and our kid running to it.
- 26:25I Hate Talking: I thought you were gonna say like, he's running towards the light and we're gonna lose him.
- 26:30I Hate Talking: And like, oh, I was not gonna like that dream.
- 26:33I Hate Talking: -- Sounds -- horrible.
- 26:34I Hate Talking: Now, I have had dreams before.
- 26:37I Hate Talking: Mainly in my childhood, not as much in my adult life, but I don't really recall them ever being unrealistic.
- 26:45I Hate Talking: Interesting.
- 26:46I Hate Talking: I had a recurring dream, if we're talking about dreams, throughout my childhood, and I had it recurring.
- 26:54I Hate Talking: Often until we got married, which is a whole Freudian thing, I'm sure, but it was of my father and my dream he was passing, and he wanted all his friends to come have his funeral with him.
