- 0:01Matthew chapter 5. Let us pray.
- 0:07Lord our God, our Father Jesus, thank you.
- 0:12Thank you, God that you are the treasure that's buried in the
- 0:17field. Thank you God, that we have
- 0:20enough wherewithal to sell everything God and come and
- 0:25follow you, or to lay down everything and come and follow
- 0:29you. God, we resist the enemy.
- 0:33God, we rebuke in the name of Jesus, the enemy from off of our
- 0:38minds. God, we rebuke the enemy from
- 0:42off of our family. God, in the name of Jesus, the
- 0:47Lord rebukes the Satan. Get thee behind us, Satan.
- 0:53Lord, we pray for dominion. God, Dominion over our bodies,
- 0:57dominion over this land, dominion over our houses,
- 1:00dominion over our families, dominion over our workplaces,
- 1:04dominion everywhere that we step.
- 1:07God is holy ground. So, Lord, I pray that today will
- 1:11be the turning point for many, Lord, as they see you in US.
- 1:18Lord, I pray in the name of Jesus that we are the salt and
- 1:21the light. God, I pray in the name of
- 1:24Jesus, Lord, that you make us the ministers of reconciliation
- 1:28for our families and our friends and our neighbors.
- 1:31God in this world, Lord, I pray that you'll make us humble
- 1:38servants. Lord, I pray that you'll make us
- 1:41bond servants, God, And you no longer call us servants, but you
- 1:47call us friends and sons. And so, Lord, I pray in the name
- 1:51of Jesus that you'll continue to come and get your glory.
- 1:54God, come and get your glory in the creation that chooses you,
- 1:59Father. And we do.
- 2:00We choose you today. We choose you tomorrow, God, we
- 2:04choose you for all of eternity, Father, we're so ravished and in
- 2:09love with you, God. We're enamored by your beauty,
- 2:12Father, We say thank you. Lord, we enter your gates with
- 2:20praise and Thanksgiving. Lord, we enter in.
- 2:24God, we enter in through the narrow way.
- 2:26Father, we hear your voice, Lord, you, we are your sheep.
- 2:30Lord, you are the Good Shepherd. Lord, we come in and dine and
- 2:34Sup with you got. We're feasting on the living
- 2:38water, God. We're feasting God with the
- 2:41bread of life. We're feasting God with the
- 2:44manna. Father, give us the quail.
- 2:46God, give us Our Daily Bread today.
- 2:48Father, we beg of you that you'll come in, Lord, and that
- 2:52you will fill us. Holy Spirit, fill us
- 2:56overflowing. God, we want more of you.
- 2:59We have tasted and we have seen that you are good, Lord, and you
- 3:02satisfy us and leave us longing for more.
- 3:06We know that we were created, created for more.
- 3:08We know that we were created for eternity.
- 3:11For You have placed it in our heart, God.
- 3:13And I pray in the name of Jesus, Lord, that you'll bring many
- 3:17more into the fold with this God.
- 3:23Lord, you are only getting started.
- 3:25And so, Father, we get out of our own way.
- 3:28We lay prostate. Father, lift our gaze up to You.
- 3:32We know where our help comes from.
- 3:35You are a good and loving and gracious Father, and we love you
- 3:39so much. Lord, teach us your ways today.
- 3:41I get out of the way. Holy Spirit, you come in and
- 3:45teach. Holy Spirit, you come in and say
- 3:48whatever it is that you want to say to us today.
- 3:52Holy Spirit, have your way. Holy Spirit, we love you.
- 3:59Baptize us with the Holy Ghost. Baptize us with fire.
- 4:03Fresh wind today. Lord, let us see you.
- 4:07We want to see you, God. Yes, Lord, teach us your ways.
- 4:16Teach us, Holy Spirit, convict us.
- 4:19Holy Spirit, let us lay down all of the things that are
- 4:23entangling us and strangling us, God, all the things that are
- 4:29taking first place, God, we lay them down.
- 4:32Lord, we cast them on the fire, Father, purify us and purge us,
- 4:38God, Refine us in the refining fire, God.
- 4:43For you are so good at what you do, Lord, and we trust you like
- 4:47little children. We know that you're a good
- 4:49father. We have that childlike faith
- 4:52today, God. Thank you, Lord.
- 4:56Jesus is Lord, it's in Jesus Christ.
- 4:59Holy precious powerful name. Did I pray?
- 5:07Amen. Let's start in verse one.
- 5:12And seeing the multitudes, He went up into a mountain, and
- 5:19when he was set, his disciples came unto him.
- 5:24What's he talking about here in verse one?
- 5:27Couple things you need to know here.
- 5:29If you were following along in chapter 4, you're going to know
- 5:32that there were a multitude of people that were following after
- 5:36Jesus Christ and it looked as if he was amassing some kind of
- 5:40army for a Roman overthrow. Jesus had a mass, so many people
- 5:49here at this time and he went up into a mountain and this would
- 5:53have been a repetitive sermon that he would have given
- 5:58multiple times. And this is one of the times
- 6:02that he would have recorded it. And it looks as if he went to a
- 6:05place that had great acoustics, that he could have sat down
- 6:10while everyone else was standing and all the people came and
- 6:15amassed all around him. And I'm sure as he spoke, it
- 6:19reverberated so that the entire crowd could hear it.
- 6:23And isn't Jesus so good? He is meekness.
- 6:30He is such power under control as he sits to teach.
- 6:35Praise God two, and he opened his mouth and taught them,
- 6:40saying this entire book that you hold in your hand from Genesis
- 6:46to Revelation is Jesus opening his mouth to speak to us.
- 6:52There is not one comma or period that is not as important as the
- 6:58other. It all points to this moment.
- 7:01It all points to Jesus Christ. Friends three blessed or the
- 7:07poor in spirit, for theirs is the Kingdom of heaven.
- 7:13Here we're going to understand the heart of God.
- 7:18Friends, lock in, pay attention, and this is all going to point
- 7:24us to the things that please God.
- 7:26This is all going to point us to how we should live our lives.
- 7:30This is how. This is the lens that we should
- 7:33see the entire world through, friends.
- 7:36It's not the lens of your teachers.
- 7:38It's not the lens of the news. It's not the lens of your
- 7:43parents. It's not the lens of your
- 7:46constituents. It's not the lens of the
- 7:49government. It's not the lens of family and
- 7:53friends and culture. It's not the lens of what is
- 7:56popular. It is not the lens of what has
- 8:01become mainstream. It's not that lens, the lens
- 8:08that we should govern our lives by, the lens that we should
- 8:12meditate upon always. The lens that should always come
- 8:17into our minds and our hearts and our emotions in our
- 8:21circumstances, day-to-day to day-to-day, 24 hours a day,
- 8:27seven days a week, 365 for however many years that you have
- 8:32left on this earth. Until He comes back, or until we
- 8:37go the way of our fathers into the grave.
- 8:40Every single day, every single moment.
- 8:45This is the mandate upon your lives, friends.
- 8:49Lock in, pay attention, listen up.
- 8:53Blessed are the poor in spirit. These are the downcast, the
- 8:57downtrodden. These are the ones that society
- 9:01passes over. These are the ones that are
- 9:03struggling to make ends meet. These are the ones that feel as
- 9:07if they've been marginalized. And what does he say?
- 9:10For theirs is the Kingdom of heaven.
- 9:12It's an upside down, inside out kind of Kingdom.
- 9:15Friends, the economy of heaven is not the same as the economy
- 9:19here. And here many that are first
- 9:21will be last, and here many that are last will be first in the
- 9:26Kingdom of heaven. Friends, don't forget it, for
- 9:30blessed are they that mourn, for they shall be comforted.
- 9:36Just think about it for a little while this morning.
- 9:40And the Bible tells us not to mourn like the rest of the world
- 9:44who have no hope. We mourn differently.
- 9:48We mourn for those that do not know him, but for those that
- 9:52know him that Passover. We should rejoice friends.
- 9:56We should celebrate friends because to live is Christ and to
- 10:01die is gain. Do not mourn like the rest of
- 10:05the world who have no hope. We will be comforted if we allow
- 10:10it. Don't let the death of a loved 1
- 10:15cause you to doubt God or to doubt His goodness.
- 10:20Even if it's premature, even if it leaves such a void.
- 10:24We need to trust. We need to know that God's plans
- 10:28are way better than our plans in His ways are not our ways.
- 10:31His thoughts are not our thoughts, friends.
- 10:36We need to trust, we need to know that He's working all
- 10:39things out for the good of those who love him and who are called
- 10:43according to his purposes. And do not be conformed to this
- 10:48world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.
- 10:52Five. Blessed are the meek, for they
- 10:55shall inherit the earth. This is power under control.
- 10:59This is what Jesus exuded. He was the Son of God.
- 11:03He is the Son of God. He is God Incarnate.
- 11:07He is God in the flesh. And he came and he was hungry.
- 11:11He came and he was thirsty. He came and he was lonely and
- 11:15tired. This is power under control.
- 11:19Even at the end of his life, he said, do you not know that I can
- 11:26call down legions of angels? And when Pilate was asking him
- 11:32if he was the Son of God, if he was the king of Jews, he said,
- 11:38you have no power but what has been given to you by my Father.
- 11:42This is meekness and he calls us to be me when we are in power
- 11:48over other people. Whether you are a supervisor,
- 11:53whether you are a manager, whether you are a CEOACOOACFO,
- 12:00whether you are the owner of a business, whether you are over
- 12:05your family, whether you are over your children.
- 12:09God expects for us to act in meekness and the meekness is
- 12:13even though we have the ability to exact power and exact our
- 12:24position over others, He desires for us to behave and to act in a
- 12:32way that is pleasing unto Him, which is following after all of
- 12:39the mandates here that you find in the Beatitudes.
- 12:42This is the attitudes that we should have friends towards our
- 12:49neighbors, towards our sons and daughters and spouses towards
- 12:54our coworkers. This is what pleases the Lord
- 12:58God Almighty, and this is the fulfillment that Jesus walked
- 13:01out in His earthly ministry here, friends.
- 13:04And He's showing us what it is that God desires of us, friends,
- 13:09to be meek. And then He gives us every time
- 13:12He tells us what we should do in every instance that we're going
- 13:17to encounter for the rest of our lives, which by the way, that's
- 13:20what you're going to see here. He tells us the promise that's
- 13:24connected to it. He says that we'll get to see
- 13:29God. God.
- 13:30He tells us we're going to be comforted.
- 13:32He tells us that we'll get the Kingdom of heaven.
- 13:37He tells us that we'll inherit the earth.
- 13:39Here, friends, we'll have that dominion. 6 Blessed are they
- 13:46which do hunger and thirst after righteousness, for they will be
- 13:50filled. That, my friends, is what the
- 13:53Lord wants from us. He wants us to be searching and
- 13:58seeking and to be moving towards righteousness.
- 14:03And what even is righteousness? Righteousness is living the
- 14:07right way. What is living the right way is
- 14:10following after all of these mandates here.
- 14:14It's all of these promises. Here is righteousness, friends,
- 14:20and He promises us that would be filled.
- 14:23He promises us that will inherit the earth.
- 14:25He promises us that will be comforted.
- 14:28He promises us the Kingdom of heaven.
- 14:31Here, friends, 7 Blessed are the merciful, for they will obtain
- 14:38mercy. You just think about whenever
- 14:41David had it within his power to kill King Saul and usurp the
- 14:46authority in his rightful place. He had already been anointed as
- 14:50king by Samuel, and he could have killed him in The Cave.
- 14:55Whenever Saul went in to relieve himself and he cut off a part of
- 15:01his coat there and he went out and he told him I could have
- 15:06killed you. And Saul was embarrassed, but he
- 15:09didn't give up. He was relentless towards the
- 15:11pursuit of trying to kill David. And then you look whenever David
- 15:16was on the roof and he had the affair with Bathsheba.
- 15:19And wasn't God merciful to him? He was a man after God's own
- 15:26heart. And this is the principle that
- 15:28you'll see here, that we will obtain mercy when we are
- 15:33merciful to others. Friends, that is the idea here.
- 15:38We should extend forgiveness to others because we have been
- 15:42forgiven. 8 Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see
- 15:49God. Blessed are the pure in heart.
- 15:59This is someone who's completely sold out to the King of Kings
- 16:03and the Lord of Lords. This is somebody who has
- 16:05stiffed, armed all the world and everything of the world and all
- 16:09of the things that they could gain in this world.
- 16:11And they are absolutely, totally, 100% sold out to Jesus
- 16:17Christ. And it does not mean that they
- 16:19live the perfect way, but they are not willing to compromise
- 16:24when the world comes in and tries to sell them alive, when
- 16:27the world comes in and promises them all the desires of their
- 16:31heart, promises them that they will be happy whenever they give
- 16:36in to compromise. And these are the people who
- 16:39say, absolutely not. I'm following after God, and
- 16:43though none come with me, I will still follow Him.
- 16:47And whenever you are pure in heart, you have the childlike
- 16:50faith. And when you have the childlike
- 16:52faith, God allows you to see Him all around.
- 16:55All of creation proclaims His name.
- 16:59He allows you to see Him in the little children.
- 17:03He allows you to see Him in the elderly.
- 17:05He allows you to see Him in marriages.
- 17:07He allows you to see Him in the world around us through the
- 17:11church, and He allows you to see Him in His Word here and in
- 17:14prayer. God allows you to see Him when
- 17:18you are pure in heart, friends, and that is what we should
- 17:21strive after. We should be striving after
- 17:24mercy and righteousness. We should be striving after
- 17:28purity and meekness. We should be striving after the
- 17:32comfort that comes from mourning.
- 17:34We should be striving after being poor in spirit.
- 17:38Whenever we do not care about the riches of this world, we're
- 17:41completely sold out. We've sold everything to buy the
- 17:45treasure in the field. Friends 9 Blessed are the peace
- 17:51makers, for they shall be called the children of God.
- 17:56These are not peacekeepers. This is not someone who's
- 18:00separating 2 fighting foes. This is someone who by their
- 18:05very presence, because they are reflecting God Almighty, when
- 18:09they walk in the room, there is stillness and a calmness.
- 18:14There's peace in the room just by the presence, because you
- 18:18have been in the presence of God.
- 18:20When you come down out of the mountain and they say cover your
- 18:23face, we'll do whatever you say. This is the peacemakers,
- 18:29friends. You are called to be a
- 18:31peacemaker, friends, and it comes from your obedience unto
- 18:35God. And you will be called the
- 18:39children of God. They will see God all over you,
- 18:43in you, and on you. Friends 10 Blessed are they
- 18:50which are persecuted for righteousness sake, for theirs
- 18:54is the Kingdom of heaven. OK, so we're moving in to a
- 19:00different mindset here. Even whenever you are following
- 19:04after the Lord God Almighty, you can expect that you're going to
- 19:07rub up against those who are hostile.
- 19:11They've made a love decision for the world and they're going to
- 19:15ridicule you. They're going to say all kinds
- 19:17of false things towards you. And what does he say about these
- 19:21people? They said he says that they are
- 19:24blessed and that theirs is the Kingdom of heaven.
- 19:29This is the same as the poor in spirit.
- 19:31This is the kick down downtrodden.
- 19:35This is the marginalized. These are those that have been
- 19:38pushed into a corner, backed up against the wall.
- 19:41These are those that are completely reliant upon God for
- 19:47all of their provision. They're not self seeking, self
- 19:52satisfying, self reliant. They are reliant upon God and
- 19:56God alone for all of the daily bread.
- 20:00They are reliant upon God Almighty for their next breath.
- 20:04These are the ones who will inherit the Kingdom of Heaven.
- 20:1311 Blessed are you when men will revile you and persecute you and
- 20:19and say all kinds of manner of evil against you falsely for my
- 20:25sake. Jesus is going to tell us here
- 20:29about how the world because they refuse to believe in him and
- 20:34they hated him first they will hate us and that is such a
- 20:38promise to us that that is an indicator that you belong to
- 20:42him. But when that happens he's going
- 20:45to tell you what to do in 12 rejoice be exceedingly glad for
- 20:53great is your reward in heaven for so persecuted they the
- 20:59prophets which were before you. So God is promising us that our
- 21:07rewards will be in heaven, friends, not here on this earth.
- 21:12He's saying here your reward in heaven.
- 21:15And it takes faith to understand that we're going to have rewards
- 21:20in heaven. It's such a profound promise,
- 21:28and it is repeated over and over and over and over and over all
- 21:32throughout the Bible, from Genesis to Revelation, all
- 21:37throughout the Bible. God promises us rewards,
- 21:41friends, and we do not work for the rewards.
- 21:44We do not work for our salvation.
- 21:47It is a natural overflow of a life that is sold out to Him.
- 21:51But you will be rewarded friends, and He's promising you
- 21:55here in chapter 5 of Matthew that great is your reward in
- 22:00heaven. And he tells you that they
- 22:02persecuted the prophet. So don't be surprised when they
- 22:06persecute a true sold out, born again blood bought St.
- 22:12He says rejoice in it. Be exceedingly glad when you're
- 22:16getting tied up to the stake. Be exceedingly glad when they're
- 22:19flaying off your skin. Be exceedingly glad when you're
- 22:23thrown into the fire. He's telling you to rejoice
- 22:26because it's for him. But if you're persecuted for
- 22:29doing wrong, there is nothing glorious in that.
- 22:32Friends, do not rejoice and be glad if you're caught doing
- 22:37something wrong. And then justice is served. 13
- 22:45You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt has lost its
- 22:51savour, how shall it be salted? It is therefore good for nothing
- 22:58but to be cast out and to be trodden under foot of men.
- 23:03He's telling us that we're the salt of the earth.
- 23:06He's telling us not to lose our ability to cleanse and to go
- 23:14into the wounds and to kill all the bacteria.
- 23:20That is the purpose of the salt. It is antibacterial and if
- 23:25you've ever cut yourself and then got salt in it, if you ever
- 23:30have a burn and you get salt in it, or if you are sweating and
- 23:34the salt from your pores goes into the cut, it stains.
- 23:39And that's the idea here. This salt goes in and it
- 23:43cleanses and it purifies. It detoxifies.
- 23:48It kills all the bad bacteria and God knows exactly what he's
- 23:53doing. And he's telling us, yes, we
- 23:54should go in and flavor the world this, this bland, this
- 24:01wicked and perverse world that's living in darkness.
- 24:05He's saying that we as we spend time in His Word, as we spend
- 24:10time in meditation, as we spend time in worshiping Him, as we
- 24:16spend time praying unto the Father, as we spend time
- 24:21reflecting upon His face, We like the moon, we take in the
- 24:27sun, the SON, we take in the sun as we go out into our
- 24:32communities. People see that, friends.
- 24:35They see God all over us, Friends.
- 24:38That is the salt and that is the light that He's going to talk
- 24:41about here. Friends 14 You are the light of
- 24:46the world. A city that is set on a hill
- 24:48cannot be hidden. You know, whenever there's a
- 24:51storm and the power gets knocked out and somebody goes and they
- 24:55finds the candle and they light the candle.
- 24:58It is just our nature, friends. It is a natural, innate response
- 25:03for us to come out of the darkness towards the light.
- 25:07And when you are the light of the world, people will naturally
- 25:10come towards you whenever the whole world is going by the
- 25:14wayside and you have hope and you have purpose and peace.
- 25:20People see it and they want to know.
- 25:22They say, what is this hope that you have inside of you?
- 25:25And it is a great opportunity for you to share the love of God
- 25:29Almighty with them, what Jesus has done for you.
- 25:32Remember your testimony. Remember where you've come from.
- 25:35Tell everybody about your salvation story, friends.
- 25:40Do not lose your savor Ness. Do not lose the saltiness.
- 25:45Do not lose the ability to flavor this world.
- 25:48Do not be so incredibly wrapped up in the world that you are no
- 25:54good to share. Whenever they look and they say,
- 25:57oh, this guy is a bigot. Oh, this guy is duplicious.
- 26:00Oh, this guy is a hypocrite because he does the things that
- 26:05the entire world does. And then he tries to come and
- 26:08sit on his high horse. He tries to preach the gospel
- 26:11and his life looks no different than mine.
- 26:14That's what it looks like to be trodden under foot.
- 26:16Friends, we should live differently.
- 26:19It's good for the boat to be in the water, but it's not good for
- 26:22the water to be in the boat. Friends. 15 Neither do men light
- 26:28a candle and put it under a bushel, but on a Candlestick,
- 26:34and it gives light unto all that are in the house.
- 26:37That's exactly what I was talking about.
- 26:39We need to lift Jesus up over all of our circumstances.
- 26:44Lift Jesus up over your natural responses.
- 26:48Lift Jesus up over your financial situation.
- 26:51Lift Jesus up. Trust Jesus and everything, and
- 26:55watch how the world sees it. And they come and they ask, how
- 26:59is it that you have such faith in this time?
- 27:0516 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see
- 27:10your good works and glorify your Father, which is in heaven.
- 27:14Here we get to see a beautiful dance.
- 27:18We get to see that we're not saved by work, so that anyone
- 27:22should boast. But what does he tell us here?
- 27:25That letting our light shine, which is taking in Jesus daily,
- 27:30people will see the natural overflow of that and then they
- 27:35will glorify God Almighty. 17 Do not think that I've come to
- 27:40destroy the law or the prophets. I have not come to destroy, but
- 27:45to fulfill. Every single one of the laws
- 27:50that Moses went through was to show us our need for Jesus
- 27:56Christ. He was perfect, He is perfect,
- 28:01He lived a perfect life. He was this spotless,
- 28:05unblemished Lamb that was slain. You and I could never behave our
- 28:15way into heaven. It was only by the blood of the
- 28:17Lamb that we enter in. And Jesus here is showing us
- 28:23that He fulfilled all the requirements of the Mosaic Law.
- 28:28He, he fulfilled him in his perfect life, and He's going to
- 28:32fulfill them in the death and the burial and the resurrection
- 28:36and the ascension. God knew what He was doing when
- 28:40he gave all the law of Moses. He was showing us that we could
- 28:44never get there on our own. 18 For truly, I say unto you, until
- 28:51heaven and earth pass away, not one jot or title shall in no way
- 28:57pass from the law until all be fulfilled.
- 29:02So here you can see the principle.
- 29:07The heaven and earth shall pass away, but not one of His words,
- 29:11not a comma, not a period, not a jot, not a title, not the
- 29:15smallest mark, not the smallest letter will pass away until all
- 29:24of it is fulfilled. Whenever we've been there 10,000
- 29:29years, bright, shining as the sun, we have no less days to
- 29:33sing His praise than when we first begun.
- 29:37That's the fulfilment of it, friends.
- 29:40When we are there and there is no more temptation, there's no
- 29:45more evil. There is no more need for
- 29:51pastors and preachers and teachers, for we will be there
- 29:55with Him forever more, forever and ever. 19 Whosoever therefore
- 30:04shall break one of the least, the commandments shall teach men
- 30:08so he shall be called the least in the Kingdom of heaven.
- 30:11But whosoever shall do and teach them the same shall be called
- 30:16great in the Kingdom of heaven. 19 Is this principle that there
- 30:21will be hypocrites that make it there, as if they escaped out of
- 30:25a fire, but they will be the least.
- 30:27There is no rewards, there's no crown, but those of us who have
- 30:32learned how to serve him in this life, when we get there, not
- 30:40only are we just there, there are a lot of people that are
- 30:43just content with making it there.
- 30:45That's all they actually care about is they just want to get
- 30:49there. So they want to live however
- 30:51they want to live here. And as long as they have their
- 30:53blessed assurance, they continue to go back into sin multiple
- 30:58times. And it's not to say that they're
- 31:01not actually saved. It's just that they don't
- 31:03understand this principle, that if you can get it here, and if
- 31:09you could lay down this world now and take up the cross and
- 31:14follow Him, and not care about all the pleasure in the
- 31:19pleasantries of this life, and be sold out to Him, no matter
- 31:24what it costs, then what does He say?
- 31:27You will be called great in the Kingdom of heaven. 20 For I say
- 31:32unto you, that except your righteousness shall exceed the
- 31:35righteousness of the scribes and the Pharisees, you shall in no
- 31:39case enter into the Kingdom of heaven.
- 31:42This is the childlike faith, friends.
- 31:44That is how we're going to make it into heaven.
- 31:47It is having the childlike faith and the Pharisees and the
- 31:51scribes, they were scrupulous. They were meticulous in their
- 31:56obedience, but it was all just ceremonious, that all they cared
- 32:00about was just if they had fulfilled the law.
- 32:03They did not care about the heart, which was all of the
- 32:06Beatitudes back there. It was taking us not just from
- 32:10action but to the inner motives. And that is what He's talking
- 32:14about here in verse 2021. You have heard that it was said
- 32:18by them of old that you shall not kill, but whoever shall kill
- 32:23shall be in danger of the judgment.
- 32:27So here this would have been the oral traditions that the
- 32:31synagogues and all the teachers there whenever they were talking
- 32:35about the Law of Moses and they were adding all of these laws on
- 32:39top of laws to protect the people from ever breaking the
- 32:42initial law. Jesus is going to expound upon
- 32:48that and he's going to completely flip over the tables
- 32:52and drive out the money changers from all of their oral
- 32:55traditions. What does he say?
- 32:5722 But I say unto you that whosoever is angry with his
- 33:02brother without cause shall be in danger of the judgement, and
- 33:06whoever shall say to his brother Raqqa shall be in danger of the
- 33:11council. But whoever shall say, you fool,
- 33:14shall be in danger of hell fire. Think about it for a second.
- 33:18It's the motives here, you know. First sin is perceived in the
- 33:24mind and in the heart, and then it's conceived outside in the
- 33:28natural. First you have to commit
- 33:31adultery within your mind. First you have to murder within
- 33:35your mind before you ever do it outside.
- 33:38And this is whenever we are harnessing evil within our
- 33:42hearts. But outwardly we sure do look
- 33:45the part. We're suiting ties with our
- 33:48stretch Cadillacs and our big mansions.
- 33:51We go into our Sunday dinner sitting down and we want
- 33:55everybody to know and see that we've been to church.
- 33:58But inwardly we're addicted to pornography.
- 34:01Inwardly we are liars and inwardly we're greedy.
- 34:05Inwardly we think that God's holding out on us and he doesn't
- 34:08have our best. Inwardly, we're manufacturing
- 34:11our own lives and God sees all of the motives whenever we are
- 34:16gossiping and slandering and whenever we're breaking other
- 34:20people down. Because we are so incredibly
- 34:28self confident and self reliant, whenever we are incredibly
- 34:37distracted, it causes us to start believing lies and
- 34:43latching on to lies and allowing Satan to have a playground
- 34:48within our mind and our hearts. And it should not be so Friends,
- 34:52we should purge out the devil. Kick the devil in the face.
- 34:57He is a defamed, declawed lion. He has no power.
- 35:02He's just a roar. And we know that the thief comes
- 35:05to steal, kill and destroy. And he tries to destroy your
- 35:11marriage. He tries to destroy your
- 35:14relationship with your children. He tries to destroy the
- 35:17relationship in the community. He kills our joy friends.
- 35:23And we need to make sure that we're not entertaining him
- 35:28within our hearts and minds. And then outwardly we say yes
- 35:32and Amen and brother and sister. And we are on the outwardly
- 35:40religious, but inwardly we've let so much of the world in. 23
- 35:48Therefore if you bring your gift to the altar, and there remember
- 35:51that your brother has aught against you. 24 Leave there your
- 35:56gift before the altar, and go your way, and first be
- 36:00reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gifts.
- 36:04He's saying that it's more important to God that we're
- 36:07reconciled to our brothers and sisters than it is for us to
- 36:11come and give gifts and to give offerings and to tithe and to
- 36:18give money to the church. God says that He would rather us
- 36:22go and be reconciled to our brothers and sisters.
- 36:25Friends, if you have something that is causing you to be in
- 36:33strife with your brother or sister, go and make it right
- 36:38before you go and put the money in the offering plate. 25 Agree
- 36:43with your adversary quickly while you are in the way with
- 36:47him, unless at any time the adversary delivers you to the
- 36:51judge and the judge delivers you to the officer and you are cast
- 36:56into prison. He's saying that us as
- 36:59believers, brothers and sisters in Christ, we are going to judge
- 37:03the world. We're going to judge the angels,
- 37:06and do you not know that, friends?
- 37:09And if we are to judge them, then how could we not make it
- 37:13right amongst each other? How are we going into the Pagan
- 37:19world and into the Pagan offices, in the Pagan
- 37:23courtrooms, to settle disputes whenever we have the power of
- 37:29the Holy Spirit within us, whenever we are the temple of
- 37:34God? 26 Truly I say unto you, that
- 37:41shall by no means come out there until you have paid the
- 37:45uttermost Farthing penny. Until you have paid the last
- 37:51cent, you shall not be released from prison. 27 You have heard
- 37:58that it was said by them of old, You shall not commit adultery.
- 38:03But I say unto you that whoever looks at a woman with lust in
- 38:09his heart has already committed adultery with her.
- 38:13So what's he saying here? He's saying that even in the
- 38:17Mosaic Law, there were things that were allowed that Jesus
- 38:21doesn't even allow. So we might think that Jesus was
- 38:25coming to just disallow and disavow all of the things of
- 38:30old. But it's not.
- 38:31So, friends, Jesus actually compounded them.
- 38:36You know you cannot keep a bird from flying over your head, but
- 38:40you sure can keep it from building a nest in your hair.
- 38:49This is what it looks like. It's even the motive of the
- 38:52hearts that gets us in trouble. When David was on the roof,
- 38:56before he had the affair with Bathsheba, when he was on the
- 39:02roof, he was supposed to be out in war with his battle buddies.
- 39:06But what was he doing? He was up there.
- 39:09He was being lazy. It is sin perceived before it is
- 39:13conceived. Don't forget it.
- 39:15He's saying that it starts in the mind.
- 39:18It starts in the heart. Friends, before we ever do it,
- 39:23we need to get rid of it. The moment that it enters into
- 39:26our mind, we need to not let it settle in our hearts.
- 39:31Don't let it build the nest in your hair, friends.
- 39:34Don't even entertain it. Look away.
- 39:37As soon as you see it, look away.
- 39:39Don't let people catch you looking at things that are not
- 39:43godly. If you see something that
- 39:46catches your eye, look away. Immediately.
- 39:52Look up. Pray to the Lord.
- 39:55Ask Him for strength in that moment. 29 And if the right eye
- 40:03offends you, pluck it out and cast it from you, for it is
- 40:07profitable for you that one of your members should perish, and
- 40:10not that the whole body shall be cast into hell.
- 40:14He's saying that don't even let it take root.
- 40:17Don't even let it start anywhere.
- 40:19Do not let it lead you off into captivity.
- 40:23Do not let it go down into the depths of hell.
- 40:26Do not let it get you to lose your position with God Almighty.
- 40:38It is such a beautiful thing when we're in the fold.
- 40:40It's such a beautiful thing when we're listening and hearing from
- 40:44God. But we can see our conscience as
- 40:46friends. We can grieve the Holy Spirit,
- 40:52and that will lead us off into hell.
- 40:54Friends 30 And if your right hand offends you, cut it off,
- 41:00cast it from you, for it is profitable for you that one of
- 41:04your members should perish, that not the whole body should be
- 41:08cast into hell. And here's a really quick
- 41:11principle. The devil cannot cast there.
- 41:14The devil cannot snatch you out of God's hands when you're in
- 41:18the fold, praise God, Hallelujah.
- 41:20You might be like the one that just escaped out of the fire,
- 41:23but you cannot lose your position with him.
- 41:26But there are many today that are being drawn by the Spirit.
- 41:30There are being many today that are being beckoned by the
- 41:33Spirit. And they don't really know where
- 41:36they stand with God. And a lot of times it is the sin
- 41:41that comes in that gets them to go so far down into depravity,
- 41:47that gets them to believe that they're not loved and that God
- 41:50hates them and that God doesn't want to have anything to do with
- 41:53them. And they die in that sin,
- 41:55friends. And that is how they're cast
- 41:57into hell. 31 It has been said, whoever shall put away his wife,
- 42:05let him give her a writing of divorcement.
- 42:08So here again Jesus is going to expound upon the law, not
- 42:12abolish it. 32 But I say unto you, that whosoever shall put
- 42:18away his wife, except for the cause of fornication, shall
- 42:23cause her to commit adultery, and whosoever shall marry her,
- 42:27that is divorced commits adultery.
- 42:30So here we learn this all the way back in Malachi chapter 2,
- 42:34how God really feels about marriage.
- 42:36And whenever the legal system says you're divorced, unless
- 42:41there was adultery, God still sees those people as married.
- 42:47And that is what Jesus is saying.
- 42:50He is beckoning us back to Malachi too.
- 42:53He is beckoning us back to how God sees about marriage.
- 42:56Marriage is a God instituted thing.
- 43:00It's not a man made thing. It's not a legal document.
- 43:06It was instituted by God Almighty.
- 43:10And we might say, well, I want a different spouse.
- 43:15I'm tired of this one. And we live in a culture that
- 43:19when something breaks, we don't fix it.
- 43:21We just go out and get a new one.
- 43:23And this is what Jesus is warning US against, that God
- 43:28doesn't just allow us to go get a piece of paper from a lawyer's
- 43:33office that says that we're divorced.
- 43:36It doesn't work that way. God still sees you as married
- 43:40unless there was infidelity. And if someone is abusing you,
- 43:46get them help. You get help, you get out.
- 43:49You don't stay, but you stay married until death.
- 43:53You stay married even if you're separated from them. 33 Again,
- 44:01you have heard that it has been said by them of old.
- 44:04You shall not forswear thyself, but shall perform unto the Lord
- 44:10your oath. So he's saying that we should
- 44:14not swear. We should not be like those
- 44:19little children who use the Lord's name in vain, and say, I
- 44:24swear. 34 But I say unto you, Do not swear at all, neither by
- 44:32heaven, for it is God's throne, nor by the earth, for it is his
- 44:36footstool, neither by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great
- 44:40King. So many truths are found here.
- 44:44We don't need to take the Lorde name in vain.
- 44:47Whenever we're promising and swearing something to somebody,
- 44:50he's going to tell us what to do. 36 Neither shall you swear
- 44:55by your head, because you cannot make one hair white or black.
- 44:59So in their culture at this time, it was common for them to
- 45:03swear by Jerusalem, it was common for them to swear by the
- 45:08earth, it was common for them to swear by heaven.
- 45:13And Jesus is saying, don't swear at all, but let your
- 45:19communication be yes, yes, no, no, for whatever is more than
- 45:29these comes from evil. He tells us where all of this
- 45:33swearing comes from. There's so many times when
- 45:36people say, I swear that they're actually lying and they're
- 45:44trying to cover up their tracks and they're bringing whatever
- 45:47high thing into the equation to try to throw you off the scent.
- 45:55But the reality is they're lying.
- 45:56And that's what Jesus is saying here.
- 45:58It is from the evil 138. You have heard that it has been
- 46:03said an eye for an eye and a 24239.
- 46:07Here's Jesus expounding upon Moses's law and he says, but I
- 46:12say that you do not resist evil, but whoever shall strike you on
- 46:19the right cheek, turn to him. The other also, this is someone
- 46:22who disrespects you. This is humility in action right
- 46:27here. This is when we're disrespected.
- 46:29We do not try to go in exact revenge on these people even
- 46:33though we're fired up. That is the meekness that he
- 46:36talked about. This is the gentleness that he
- 46:39talks about. He says, 40 And if any man will
- 46:43sue you at the law and take away your coat, let him have your
- 46:49cloak also. This is the outer garment.
- 46:51This is the inner garment. This is Jesus telling us that if
- 46:56they want half, just give them all because God is able to give
- 47:01it all back to you twice fold, just like he did with Job.
- 47:06Don't worry about materialism, friends. 41 And whoever shall
- 47:11compel you to go a mile, go with him too.
- 47:14He's saying let God fuel you. Mount up like eagles, run, and
- 47:20not grow weary. 42 Give to him that ask you, and from him that
- 47:25would borrow to you. Don't turn them away.
- 47:28This is the principle of not expecting to get repaid.
- 47:32This is the principle of amongst brethren.
- 47:35Don't try to give interest rates. 43 You have heard that it
- 47:40has been said that you shall love your neighbor and hate your
- 47:44enemy. 44 But I say unto you, Love your enemies, and bless
- 47:48them that curse you. Do good to them that hates you
- 47:51and pray for them which despitefully use you and
- 47:55persecute you. He talked about that back there
- 47:57and the Beatitudes. And what was he saying?
- 48:00He's saying great is your reward in heaven when you behave in
- 48:03this way, friends, memorize it, highlight it.
- 48:07Put it on your postcard, Put it on a little place card on your
- 48:12desk and in your car and in the mirror.
- 48:14When you're getting ready, put it in your wallet.
- 48:17Study it. Study verse 44.
- 48:20If we could get this right, we will have a bountiful, beautiful
- 48:24life here on this earth, and when we get there in heaven,
- 48:27Friends 45 that you may be the children of your Father, which
- 48:34is in heaven. For he makes his Son to rise on
- 48:37evil and on the good, and he sends rain on the just and on
- 48:42the unjust. Think about it.
- 48:44For a lot of people, this is their reward.
- 48:47This is as close to heaven as they will ever get.
- 48:50But for us who know Him and are known by Him, this is just the
- 48:56beginning. This is the appetizer to the
- 49:00main course, friends. This is the down payment of the
- 49:03Holy Spirit. And we see him dimly and darkly,
- 49:07but one day we will see him in fullness.
- 49:11Praise God. Hallelujah 46 For if you love
- 49:15them, which love you, what reward is that?
- 49:19Do not even the publicans do the same?
- 49:2144 And if you salute your brothers only, what do you more
- 49:26than others? Do not even the publicans?
- 49:29Do so? And we'll end on 48 Be he,
- 49:32therefore perfect, even as your Father, which is in heaven, is
- 49:37perfect. Be holy, because I am holy.
- 49:40Be perfect just as your Father in heaven.
- 49:43What does that even mean? Well, we'll back up a couple
- 49:46verses. He's saying don't just bless
- 49:49those that bless you. Don't just love those that love
- 49:52you. Don't just be kind to those that
- 49:54look like you and talk like you and walk like you.
- 49:59We need to make sure that when someone comes in and they look
- 50:03as if they had just rolled out of a dumpster fire and they
- 50:12smell, be kind, be gentle, treat them with dignity.
- 50:23Give them a cup of water, give them something to eat, invite
- 50:28them into your home, talk to them about God, show them how
- 50:35far you have come. And don't forget where you have
- 50:38come from, friend. Don't forget.
- 50:41Don't be like the publican who looks over at the center and the
- 50:45center won't even raise his head up.
- 50:47The center is crying unto God and the publican says thank you
- 50:52God, that I'm not like this center here.
- 50:56Who do you think the Lord heard? And it's obviously the Sinner.
- 51:00Don't be like the publicans, don't be like the rest of the
- 51:03world who judge from the outside.
- 51:06Sometimes we have entertained angels by showing hospitality.
- 51:13And when he says be perfect, he's saying take on the
- 51:18righteousness of Jesus Christ, put on the blood of the Lamb,
- 51:22and God will only see you one of two ways when you get there.
- 51:26He'll either see the blood of the Lamb covering you and he
- 51:30won't see a single sin. And that is what he is
- 51:34mentioning here. This perfection is when we have
- 51:37put on the blood of the Lamb, but there are those who will try
- 51:41to behave their way into heaven and they've never truly been
- 51:45washed in the blood. And when they get there, they're
- 51:48going to say, I prophesied in your name.
- 51:50I cast out demons in your name, and God is going to say, depart
- 51:54from me, for I never knew you. What an amazing chapter this has
- 52:01been. What an amazing principle this
- 52:03has been. This is the greatest sermon that
- 52:06has ever been taught in the history of mankind, from Adam
- 52:12and Eve all the way to the end. Friends, this is Jesus Christ in
- 52:21all of his glory, and he's giving us the mandate for life
- 52:25and he's giving us our principles and how we should
- 52:28govern our lives. Friends, it's all about this
- 52:32moment right here. Don't miss it.
- 52:35Praise God, Hallelujah. We love you.
- 52:38Lord Jesus, I hope you've been blessed by this chapter.
- 52:44I know I sure have. I'm praying for every single one
- 52:49of you. I love you, so does God, and
- 52:53we'll see you back here tomorrow.
- 52:55God bless you.
