- 0:08the Aussie Under 16 social media ban and what happens when social
- 0:12media. Users try to.
- 0:13Poison AI Hey everyone, and welcome to Mini scroll, the
- 0:17daily Internet culture podcast bring you the biggest stories
- 0:20from social media, the creator economy and the digital space
- 0:23every Monday through Thursday and sometimes Fridays.
- 0:26My name is Annabelle and I'm your Wednesday Mini tech scroll
- 0:29host and also. The deputy editor.
- 0:30Of Australian youth digital media brand Centennial World.
- 0:34Welcome back to Mini Tech Scroll for another week.
- 0:37I hope you guys didn't miss us too much while we were off on
- 0:40break honestly, even though it's only been a week.
- 0:42I do feel a little bit rusty today, so hopefully this episode
- 0:46goes. Smoothly because.
- 0:48We are back. We are excited.
- 0:50The forehead is exposed. Usually I.
- 0:52Have my bangs out so I'm feeling exposed.
- 0:56But yes, that is all I have to say.
- 0:58I think of the top of this week's episode.
- 1:00Other than Please remember to rate, review and subscribe.
- 1:03It is all super, super helpful, OK?
- 1:05Let's just get. Right into the content for this
- 1:07week. We actually have a 2.
- 1:09Meta related stories. This week, so to start off soft.
- 1:12I wanted to. Talk about Kylie.
- 1:14Jenner's recent collaboration with Meta on the new line of
- 1:18Smart. Glasses so last.
- 1:20Week, Meta announced a new line of smart.
- 1:22Slash AI glasses. Under its own brand.
- 1:25If the idea. Of meta having smart glasses
- 1:28sounds familiar to you. You aren't wrong.
- 1:31Meta has. Put out smart glasses in the
- 1:33past, launching with Ray Ban back in 2021.
- 1:37But now Meta has officially launched Meta Glasses and
- 1:40according to the Meta Newsroom blog post quote in partnership
- 1:44with. Essilor Luxodica.
- 1:45We're introducing meta. Glasses Which?
- 1:48Build on the technology and features of the world's best
- 1:51selling AI glasses, the launch comes with 26 styles across a
- 1:55range of colors, lenses and frames.
- 1:57But there is. One pair.
- 1:59That is causing a lot of conversation online.
- 2:01The meta glasses. By Kylie Jenner so they are
- 2:04described as a. Quote Unique slim Oval frame
- 2:07designed in collaboration with Kylie Jenner and inspired by her
- 2:11personal style and these. Glasses obviously have AI
- 2:15features. And I feel like.
- 2:17That is. The whole thing with Smart.
- 2:18Glasses these days, it's about really.
- 2:20Leaning into. AI, for better or for worse.
- 2:23But some of the more. General features with.
- 2:25This launch include. The ability to.
- 2:27Ask the meta glasses questions and it answers you.
- 2:30The ability to live. Translate take.
- 2:33Photos take videos. Among many other features and on
- 2:36top. Of this, the Kylie Glasses
- 2:38specifically are voiced by Kylie herself.
- 2:41Now I did want to note here that Kylie is actually.
- 2:43Not the first. Kardashian Jenner to collaborate
- 2:46on something AI related. With meta so.
- 2:49I don't know if you guys remember this, I think it has
- 2:51come up on the. Part before, but a couple.
- 2:54Of years ago, Kendall Jenner's likeness was licensed by Meta to
- 2:58build an AI chat bot, which it was then called Billy and it was
- 3:02marketed as like an older. Sister of sorts, so it was
- 3:05basically there for users to chat.
- 3:08To and just. Ask for advice.
- 3:10Even Kendall was among a class of celebrities who were
- 3:14involved. But since then, this program has
- 3:16been shut down. Probably for the best.
- 3:19So even though this. Isn't the first time we've seen
- 3:21this kind of collab? Consumers have not.
- 3:24Responded well to the. Kylie X meta glasses so I wanted
- 3:27to get into some of the. Discourse around that.
- 3:30Much of. The backlash?
- 3:31Has to do. With the.
- 3:33Purpose and function of smart. Slash AI glasses.
- 3:36To begin with SO. At a base level, these glasses.
- 3:39Have been. Described as a.
- 3:41Privacy and safety. Risk because users.
- 3:44Can essentially just record their surroundings at any given
- 3:47time and they can do so inconspicuously, and this is
- 3:50obviously an extreme invasion of privacy and unconsensual for the
- 3:53people who are in those recordings.
- 3:56On top of this, consumers have also expressed concerns about
- 3:59pairing smart. Glasses with AI?
- 4:01Asking whether the recordings on them could be used to train AI
- 4:06models or even potentially match people to information online,
- 4:11essentially doxing them. On the AI training front, there
- 4:14have already been cases of this. So.
- 4:17According to BBC reports, contractors in Kenya.
- 4:20Were quote tasked. With watching videos made
- 4:23through Meta's glasses to create AI training data for the
- 4:26company. Said they were required to
- 4:28watch. Graphic content like sex and
- 4:30bathroom usage not only is this obviously an invasion of privacy
- 4:34once again, but it can also be confronting and harmful for the
- 4:38contractors to watch graphic content as we've discussed time
- 4:41and time again when it comes to moderation.
- 4:44As a bit of a different example, and another issue that many
- 4:46people have noted when it comes to recording people without
- 4:50consent is that women are disproportionately.
- 4:53Targeted by this. Kind of content.
- 4:55There have already been quite a few.
- 4:57Reports of. Women being filmed out in public
- 4:59unknowingly and then seeing themselves pop up on their.
- 5:02For you page. One creator named Low Britt.
- 5:05Actually shared her. Experiences of being recorded
- 5:07without knowing and being approached by a man at an
- 5:10airport. So that is kind of like the.
- 5:11General opinion I guess or sentiment towards smart glasses.
- 5:16And as you can gather, a lot of the conversation is pretty
- 5:18negative. Though I should note that there
- 5:21are obviously some positives to smart.
- 5:23Glasses especially. When it comes to a various.
- 5:26Accessibility factors. And for blind people, which I
- 5:30think I've actually discussed on the.
- 5:31Podcast previously. So when we consider.
- 5:33The masses attitude towards AI glasses it.
- 5:36Begs the question, what is their value?
- 5:38And this is actually something that the.
- 5:40Verge cast did. A podcast on last week and I
- 5:43will link it in the description because they.
- 5:45Spoke about various. Different features that.
- 5:47Were actually valuable, so. If you're interested, definitely
- 5:49check that out, but I think the question to ask in this instance
- 5:53is. What is the value of a Kylie
- 5:55Jenner? Collaboration specifically, and
- 5:58I think it's safe to say that this is an attempt to get women
- 6:02to embrace AI and. Smart glasses specifically.
- 6:05We do talk about this quite. Frequently on this podcast, but
- 6:09there really is an AI gap between men and women, with many
- 6:12women less interested or willing.
- 6:14To use AI. In a workplace, this may come
- 6:17down to the fear of appearing reliant on AI, or in other
- 6:21context it might be the very. Fact that AI.
- 6:24Tends to harm and sexualize women more intensely and more
- 6:27frequently than men, with examples like deep fakes and
- 6:31just the rise of even AI companions, so it isn't exactly
- 6:35surprising why. This gap exists.
- 6:37But tapping someone like Kylie Jenner, someone who is widely
- 6:41considered inspired to many young women, feels like a pretty
- 6:45direct attempt to get. This demographic to buy the
- 6:48product. Obviously, women are also a
- 6:50lucrative customer base. That I feel like meta.
- 6:52Would want to tap into on its AI front another point that I've
- 6:55been seeing made on TikTok in relation to this collaboration
- 6:59and its value points to. The fact that.
- 7:01Kylie Jenner is someone who is renowned in fashion and beauty
- 7:04spaces and this is essentially allowing these industries to
- 7:08normalize surveillance in a more mainstream and.
- 7:11Wearable way, obviously. AI glasses.
- 7:13Haven't been around for quite some time now.
- 7:15But they haven't. Been considered as like quote UN
- 7:18quote cool or trendy With this. I have seen quite a few takes on
- 7:23TikTok talking about how tapping into fashion is a way to make it
- 7:27feel more acceptable, but at the same time it is also ominous
- 7:31because not only is it using fashion to promote AI, something
- 7:35that is threatening the very. Fabric of creative.
- 7:38Industries but it's also embedding surveillance in our
- 7:42clothing and ultimately this has the potential to change not only
- 7:45how we. Dress, but also how we behave
- 7:48because. If we have the feeling that we
- 7:50are being recorded and surveilled at all times.
- 7:52We will behave slash I guess. Perform accordingly.
- 7:56It literally all goes. Back to the panopticon and
- 7:58panoptic. Control.
- 8:00We've spoken about that in the deep dives.
- 8:01Before I don't. Think I've spoken about that on
- 8:03mini tech, but this is a concept that comes from an architectural
- 8:06prison design that facilitated a form of constant surveillance.
- 8:10And then Michelle Foucault used the panopticon as an analogy for
- 8:14the way modern society is organized around.
- 8:17Power and surveillance. And we do see that increasingly
- 8:21in more parts of big. Tech but I.
- 8:23Think smart glasses are a major example of that.
- 8:27As well as. How fashion is being embedded
- 8:30into that space? So I'll actually.
- 8:31Insert some Tik toks talking about that right now as well.
- 8:35Can we talk about how fashion is being used by Meta to launder
- 8:38the acceptability of their AI glasses?
- 8:40And I'm not just talking about Kylie Jenner designing a pair.
- 8:42I'm talking about niche fashion influences.
- 8:45Fashion people who have built platforms around having
- 8:47impeccable taste are promoting Meta's AI glasses because these
- 8:50glasses are technology that you wear.
- 8:52That's exactly why Meta needs the fashion crowd.
- 8:55The approval of the fashion world gives people the social
- 8:58permission to wear them, and Meta needs that legitimacy.
- 9:01That's why it's leaning on not just creators with the biggest
- 9:04audiences, but creators with the biggest cultural authority who
- 9:07are known for their good taste. Because these glasses are not
- 9:10cool. Not just because I think they're
- 9:12corny, but because they're wrapped up in pretty serious
- 9:14concerns around surveillance, privacy, and covert recording.
- 9:17So by showing you all the cool ways you can use Meta AI to
- 9:20identify vintage Tom Ford Gucci, they're trying to shift the
- 9:23perception of Meta glasses as a surveillance device to is
- 9:27something that stylish people use and wear without a second
- 9:30thought. OK, let's move.
- 9:31On to another cast name. Meta is doing so Mark
- 9:35Zuckerberg. Has reportedly.
- 9:37Encouraged Meta to consider partnering with prediction
- 9:40markets like calci and polymarket.
- 9:43I feel like. Lauren's been speaking about
- 9:44trade marking a lot recently. I've been speaking about
- 9:47prediction markets a lot recently, but honestly they have
- 9:50become my special interest. I don't know why I'm so
- 9:52intrigued in this. Space.
- 9:54It's like a car crash like I. Can't look away from it, but in
- 9:57saying that because this is something I have repeatedly
- 10:00covered, I'm not going to explain prediction markets again
- 10:02fully because I think it is kind of boring for people who have
- 10:05tuned into the multiple. Episodes that I've covered.
- 10:08This in. But to put it extremely simply,
- 10:11these platforms allow. Users to bet.
- 10:13On real life scenarios and outcomes and these range from
- 10:17Love Island. USA to the.
- 10:19Ceasefire in the Middle East to more speculative questions.
- 10:23And these contracts act more like financial shares in a way
- 10:28where users on opposing sides essentially bet against each
- 10:31other. So on June 23rd, the New York
- 10:34Times reported that Zuckerberg directed.
- 10:36Meta to create a. Prediction market.
- 10:38App that could. Compete.
- 10:40With the likes of. Calci and Polymarket.
- 10:42According to the reporting, the app is known internally as Arena
- 10:46and speaking to. Sources familiar with the
- 10:49project. It seems that.
- 10:52If this. Does indeed go to market.
- 10:55At first users. Won't be betting real money, it
- 10:58will be more based on points. As the article reads, quote the
- 11:02effort. Which inside is characterized as
- 11:04experimental. But a top priority is part of a
- 11:07broader push by Zuckerberg to create.
- 11:09New types of. Apps.
- 11:10Based on emerging social behavior online.
- 11:13So I think that quote kind of speaks to the motive behind Why
- 11:17Meadow. Would be.
- 11:18Pursuing this type of platform, and while it is being trialled
- 11:22entirely, I should note that there's no guarantee.
- 11:24That it would actually be released to the.
- 11:25Public down the line, but there is a chance that it will be
- 11:28integrated into. Meta's other.
- 11:30Apps and features. Like.
- 11:31Stories, reels, Messenger, all of that.
- 11:34Shortly. After this news.
- 11:35Broke outlets also. Started reporting that Meta
- 11:38executives have been encouraged to engage with Polymarket and
- 11:42Calci, even though it does remain unclear.
- 11:44How? Partnerships between them would
- 11:46work, so there is definitely interest in this space no matter
- 11:49what. It doesn't really.
- 11:50Surprise me that Meta would be leaning into this kind of app.
- 11:54For growth, they always do this They.
- 11:56Always kind of capitalize on whatever is trendy quote UN
- 11:59quote at a certain time. I mean, we saw that with
- 12:02Instagram taking stories from Snapchat and then reels existing
- 12:06off the. Back of tik.
- 12:07T.O.K this is something that meta does.
- 12:09Repeatedly, but. In this instance it does.
- 12:12Feel a little bit heavier because there.
- 12:14Are ethical concerns and questions around prediction
- 12:18markets. But at the end of the day, we
- 12:20all know big tech companies are seeking exponential growth and
- 12:23profit, so feeding into what might be considered up and
- 12:25coming online makes sense in this context.
- 12:29Though I should note that actually this isn't the first
- 12:31time that Mehta has dabbled in an app of this nature in 2020.
- 12:35It released Forecast which was a.
- 12:37Crowdsource prediction market. App that asked.
- 12:40People to make guesses about the world.
- 12:42In the early days of. COVID-19, but obviously since
- 12:45then these platforms have become increasingly culturally
- 12:49relevant, so I thought also it'd be interesting to talk.
- 12:52A little bit here about the. Rise of prediction markets more
- 12:54broadly and actually. We did.
- 12:56Write about this in the sub. Stack a couple of weeks ago, so
- 12:59if you've already. Heard these points?
- 13:02No, you haven't. We drew a.
- 13:04Connection between populism and prediction markets, which I
- 13:08think is a factor underpinning the broader obsession with these
- 13:12platforms so. I talk about.
- 13:13Populism. Honestly probably too frequently
- 13:17for a tech podcast. But.
- 13:20For those who are unfamiliar with the term, populism is
- 13:23generally understood as an ideology that can attach itself
- 13:26to movements. Across the political spectrum,
- 13:28but there is a. Unifying theme at its core, and
- 13:31that is a sense of victimhood. A.
- 13:34Feeling. That the elites.
- 13:36Are ripping ordinary people off and just can't be trusted and
- 13:40ever since the. Trump era, I would say the.
- 13:42Dominant. Political discourse slash
- 13:45ideology as well. As the.
- 13:47Digital World has. Become increasingly aligned with
- 13:50populism and prediction markets. Do fit perfectly with.
- 13:54This mentality because populism has.
- 13:56Created a perfect. Storm for a digital.
- 13:59World defined. By suspicion and distrust and
- 14:02platforms. Like Kaushi polymarket.
- 14:05And potentially arena down the line, promise to deliver the
- 14:09wisdom of a crowd. And this implies that these
- 14:11predictions from the masses can. Forecast real world.
- 14:15More accurately and effectively than experts or in other.
- 14:19Words the elite. And while everything going on
- 14:22with Arena is very behind the scenes right now, Meta
- 14:25potentially jumping on this wave definitely cannot be ignored
- 14:29because they obviously one of the major tech companies that
- 14:32dictate. How we operate.
- 14:33Online, so it seems this populist mentality.
- 14:36Is here to stay OK? The next story I have is a bit
- 14:39of an update on the Australian under 16 social media ban.
- 14:43There's actually been. A lot of talk about youth.
- 14:45Social media bans recently, I think, particularly ever since
- 14:48it's become a topic of conversation in the UK.
- 14:52But of course. Other governments around the
- 14:54world are following in Australia's footsteps in saying
- 14:57that we have spoken a lot about the pros and cons of the social
- 15:01media ban. In the Australian context, I
- 15:03don't really think we need to. Go through all.
- 15:05Of that again, because I think the discussion can be applied
- 15:09across different political context to simplify the
- 15:11conversation really, really quickly.
- 15:13Some users are. Pro these kinds of bans because
- 15:16of the algorithmic nature of social media and how that can
- 15:19negatively impact youth audiences.
- 15:22Whether that be. By leading them down political
- 15:24echo chambers or kind of reinforcing negative messaging,
- 15:28particularly around body image. On the flip side though.
- 15:31People are. Against these kinds of bans
- 15:33because. They.
- 15:34Argue that it limits media literacy for young people, It
- 15:37can isolate young people, and some people argue that it's
- 15:40actually not about protecting children at all, but instead
- 15:44surveillance in the the digital world.
- 15:46So it's definitely a controversial topic and as far
- 15:49as how it's being implemented. That is also.
- 15:52Being met with a. Lot of.
- 15:54Criticism and I've covered a fair.
- 15:56Few. Updates on the Australian social
- 15:58media bans since it was introduced in December.
- 16:00I think the recent time I spoke. About.
- 16:03A report from Australia's E Safety Commissioner indicating
- 16:06that there is still a number of compliance concerns, with a
- 16:09majority of under 16 year olds retaining access to their
- 16:12accounts despite there being age gating in.
- 16:15In place, allegedly. But the update I wanted to
- 16:18mention today is that the Australian Government is
- 16:20doubling down on the social platforms that are still
- 16:23allowing these under sixteens to slip through the cracks,
- 16:26according to a statement from the Prime Minister's Office.
- 16:28Quote the. Government will strengthen the E
- 16:30Safety Commissioner's information gathering powers
- 16:33with new legislation and will double the maximum penalty for
- 16:36breaches of social media minimum age law to 99 million and this
- 16:40is compared to the previous penalty of 49.5 million.
- 16:45Anyway, as the statement continues, quote the new laws
- 16:48will mean the E Safety Commissioner as the independent
- 16:51regulator can compel social media companies.
- 16:54To provide evidence. Of what they have done to stop
- 16:56under sixteenths from getting an account the enhanced.
- 16:59Powers will give. The Commissioner, stronger
- 17:01enforcement and compliance tools and more.
- 17:03Powers to hold. Big tech accountable, so with.
- 17:06That it's very. Clear that the Australian
- 17:08government is. Committed to this.
- 17:10Course of action and is really trying to fix the implementation
- 17:14problems with the ban because I remember last time we reported
- 17:17on this it was about 7 in 10 under 16 year olds.
- 17:20Still have access to their accounts.
- 17:23Which is obviously not the best result, but a predominant take
- 17:27among experts is that this doesn't seem to be quite enough
- 17:31for the government to actually. Achieve what they have set out
- 17:34to achieve. As one academic put it in a
- 17:37piece for the Conversation quote, it referring to the
- 17:39changes is unclear. Why they weren't part of the?
- 17:42Original plan for ensuring compliance.
- 17:44The changes also don't go far enough to address the potential
- 17:47harms posed by social media. Even if all social media
- 17:50platforms complied with the current legislation, significant
- 17:54safety concerns would remain. And of course, those significant
- 17:57safety concerns are often down to the platform themselves to
- 18:00monitor and regulate. But will they?
- 18:03Ever address it? Probably not, they want people
- 18:05to stay on the more users benefit them.
- 18:08I feel like I'm a broken record. But that is the truth, okay?
- 18:11To round us out. For today I have a.
- 18:15Chronically online Internet. Culture cross AI type of.
- 18:18Story I saw this story and I immediately thought I need to
- 18:21include this to mini tech because it's one of those ones
- 18:23that if you don't laugh you'll cry and it's related.
- 18:26To DuckDuckGo. So we've been speaking about
- 18:28DuckDuckGo as an alternative search engine to like Google,
- 18:31Google Chrome. Especially as Google.
- 18:33Leans further into. AI with Gemini.
- 18:36Search. So DuckDuckGo has.
- 18:38Become a favorite among social media users because you can
- 18:41completely turn off. All AI features.
- 18:43But like everything these days. There are still AI.
- 18:46Features and tools that you can opt in to use and they.
- 18:49I have been making the rounds online for making a.
- 18:51Very crazy mistake. Bear with me because this
- 18:55sentence will sound insane, but Duckduckgo's.
- 18:59AI feature started. Telling users that Donald Trump.
- 19:02Died of rabies. What timeline are we living in?
- 19:08As for where a claim like this came from?
- 19:10Because. Obviously AI is.
- 19:11Pulling from existing information futurism.
- 19:15Reported. That the evidence cited by the.
- 19:17AI was from a piece by a West. Virginia broadcaster claiming
- 19:21that Trump got. Bit by a.
- 19:23Rabies infected JD Vance The Futurism piece speculates that
- 19:28much of the content from this broadcaster.
- 19:30Actually looks to. Be AI generated so.
- 19:33If that is the case. Where did this claim come from
- 19:36before that? And the going theory here is
- 19:38that it came from the R. Slash.
- 19:40Poison AI subreddit you can probably.
- 19:42Already gather what the purpose of that subreddit?
- 19:45Is from the name, but it's where anti AI uses intentionally post.
- 19:50I guess fake slash like satirical.
- 19:53Information in order to quote UN quote poison AI, search engines
- 19:57and chat bots. The premise is obviously funny,
- 20:00but it's concerning that AI is actually picking this up.
- 20:03As for how DuckDuckGo has. Responded they have.
- 20:06Addressed the. Situation from the brand's
- 20:08Reddit account writing quote. OK, we got.
- 20:11Ducked on this one. We're on it.
- 20:12They've also written a statement on the matter.
- 20:14That they have. Left on a variety of different
