- 0:00Grand Touring Motorsports started as a social group of car enthusiasts,
- 0:04but we've expanded into all sorts of motorsports disciplines, and we
- 0:08want to share our stories with you.
- 0:10Years of racing, wrenching, and motorsports experience brings
- 0:13together a top notch collection of knowledge and information
- 0:17through our podcast, Brake Fix.
- 0:22Hey everybody, Crew Chief Eric here, and this week we have
- 0:24something extra special planned.
- 0:26Today, we're going to play a round of Name That Engine.
- 0:29The game where the answers don't matter, but the points do.
- 0:32Representing the red team is none other than our resident viking, the triple
- 0:36six, and your break fix host, Brad.
- 0:39And playing for the blue team is none other than Mountain Man Dan.
- 0:42Welcome, gentlemen.
- 0:44Yo, what's up?
- 0:45Just here to be the morale booster.
- 0:48All right, before we start, here are the rules.
- 0:50We're going to be playing a sound anywhere from 6 to 20 seconds in
- 0:54length, and you'll need to identify the engine associated with that clip.
- 0:58Pretty simple, right?
- 1:00Your answers don't need to be exact, meaning that the specific year of
- 1:04displacement, any of those details about the motor, doesn't really
- 1:07need to be part of your answer.
- 1:09But you need to at least identify the manufacturer and the number of cylinders.
- 1:13For instance, V10 Lamborghini.
- 1:16But, if you happen to know the specific make and model, That will
- 1:20definitely be the winning answer.
- 1:22Correct answers are worth one point, and at the end, the player with the
- 1:26most points will be declared a true petrolhead and receive some GTM swag.
- 1:31Are you guys ready to play?
- 1:32No.
- 1:36All right.
- 1:37I think Dan glitched out.
- 1:39He's just really calm.
- 1:41He's using dial up.
- 1:43All right.
- 1:44I am ready to fail at this miserably.
- 1:46Excellent.
- 1:46All right, gentlemen, your first clue.
- 2:04All right.
- 2:04So my guess is going to be, first of all, it sounds like it's an
- 2:07automatic, whatever vehicle it's in.
- 2:10Um, sounds kind of similar to the newer Mustangs, but I don't think that's it.
- 2:16Right.
- 2:16So, so Dan, you'll say a manufacturer and, uh, and a, uh, like a cylinder.
- 2:24I would say the newer V6 Mustang.
- 2:28I, I think it's, you're ready for mine?
- 2:30I think it's the C7R.
- 2:33Wow.
- 2:35It sounded kind of deep and throaty, like a C7R a little bit.
- 2:40It is actually a Mercedes AMG V8.
- 2:44So, between the two, I went with the C7, but I could, I
- 2:49was about to say Mercedes, yep.
- 2:51Especially because you mentioned that on a previous episode about
- 2:53how good the Mercedes V8 sound.
- 2:56I think I had to start with the good one.
- 2:58Yeah, well they sound very similar.
- 3:00They're very deep and they shake the earth.
- 3:03All right, let's go with clue number two so far we're at zero zero You All
- 3:23right, Brad, let's go with you first.
- 3:25I think it's a Chevy V8.
- 3:27Probably it sounded like an LS Like a like either a 5.
- 3:327 or a six liter from a c5 or c6 corvette or camaro Dan, would
- 3:38you like to venture a guess?
- 3:40Um, the raspiness has me thinking something like a slp Which would go
- 3:45in line with what uh, brad's saying for the gmba but at the same time
- 3:52Because the new dodge is when they first fire for that first couple
- 3:55seconds have that nice raspy tone, too.
- 3:56So i'm not I'm, not sure so give an answer brad wins The correct answer the correct
- 4:07answer is c6 corvette ls2 Nice, well done.
- 4:13One point for Brad, still zero for Dan.
- 4:15You were close.
- 4:17So, we are good.
- 4:18I think, I think Daniel should get half a point for, for calling out SLP.
- 4:22Cause, the LS1 and LS2 sound very similar.
- 4:25Alright, alright, alright.
- 4:27I'll give, I'll give him half a point.
- 4:28That way he's got points on the board.
- 4:29We're at a fraction of a point there.
- 4:31So, we'll go with clue number three.
- 4:56Oh yeah, that threw me off.
- 4:58Oh, come on.
- 5:02If you guys don't get it, Judd gets the point.
- 5:04I think I just messed my shorts.
- 5:12All right, we'll start with.
- 5:13Dan, do you have a guess?
- 5:15Is that even an internal combustion engine?
- 5:17Yes.
- 5:19Um, okay then, um, I don't know.
- 5:25I'm gonna have to pass on that because it sounded like some crazy electronic.
- 5:29Would you, would you like, uh, would you like to use your phone a friend now
- 5:33or do you want to hold that for later?
- 5:35I'm gonna hold on to it.
- 5:37All right.
- 5:37All right.
- 5:38Bradley.
- 5:39Would you like to venture a guess?
- 5:40I think it I I think it's a formula one car.
- 5:43I think it's a v12 Oh Or v10.
- 5:48All right.
- 5:49All right.
- 5:49I'm not gonna make you guess the exact manufacturer.
- 5:52It sound like a ferrari Ding ding ding ferrari v10.
- 5:55I'm gonna give you uh, i'm gonna give you half on that one since I had to
- 5:58help you along But you're correct.
- 6:00That is uh, ferrari v10 So I'm gonna have to relisten to that from somewhere
- 6:06else because when I played it on the computer just now It seriously sounded
- 6:10like some like alien Echoing type stuff.
- 6:14Yeah You got good speakers
- 6:19All right, here comes Clue number four
- 6:47is that Daniel's Banshee.
- 6:49He does love himself a two stroke.
- 6:57Brad, since you guys scored the last point, you go ahead and guess.
- 7:02Uh, that's gotta be a rally car of some sort, a four cylinder.
- 7:06I don't, I don't know the manufacturer though.
- 7:08Volkswagen?
- 7:09I don't know.
- 7:10Hyundai?
- 7:12Dan, would you like to venture a guess?
- 7:14So, uh, I'm seriously thinking the audio screwed up on this laptop,
- 7:18but that sounded like a a jet dragster to me Which would be zero
- 7:25cylinder since it's a jet engine on dragster, but the audio on my end.
- 7:28That's what it sounded like All right.
- 7:31It was daniel's banshee, wasn't it?
- 7:32It was not It was a rotary Mazda.
- 7:37Oh, so if you listen to it again, especially that very beginning part
- 7:42where it does sound like a two stroke read weed whacker, when he takes off,
- 7:46you hear the turbo and everything.
- 7:47It's an, it's an RX seven.
- 7:49Yep.
- 7:50So that's zero zero.
- 7:51All right.
- 7:53Mine, mine's definitely my audio is definitely screwed up because
- 7:56it doesn't sound nothing like that.
- 7:57So he's like, he's like one file behind me.
- 8:03We are the worst petrol heads ever.
- 8:06All right, here we go.
- 8:29Yeah.
- 8:31Switch to the audio on the phone for that one.
- 8:33And it was a much better sound than the PC.
- 8:36It sounded completely different.
- 8:37That one I can actually tell was a vehicle.
- 8:38Yeah, that's what I'm telling you.
- 8:40Headphones make a big difference.
- 8:42All right, well now.
- 8:43Just holding it up to my ear.
- 8:45Yeah.
- 8:45Yeah.
- 8:46Do you have a guess?
- 8:48That one sounds a lot like the, uh, it's got the kind of deep tone,
- 8:53almost like the Fox bodies, but I don't think that's what it is.
- 8:56It's definitely something old school.
- 8:58It's, uh, I don't know if it's an old Chevy three 50 or four 54.
- 9:03I think it's a four 54.
- 9:05But it does kind of have a Fox body feel.
- 9:09It made me think of your buddy's Fox body that we just dino'd.
- 9:14But I think it's, I think it's a Chevy big block.
- 9:16Uh, you guys are gonna, you, you guys are going to, uh, enjoy this.
- 9:21It is a Chevy.
- 9:23It is a 350.
- 9:24Okay, but it's not in a car.
- 9:27So I'll get a truck It's a pickup truck point if you can figure out what it's in.
- 9:32Is it on a boat?
- 9:33Yes, it is It's a marine 350 it's a marine 350 and a scare The guard the gargling
- 9:40that almost sounds like the fox bodies.
- 9:42What?
- 9:44It's because it's underwater.
- 9:45So I get a half a point you get a half you both get a half a point
- 9:48for that So congratulations.
- 9:49All right number six.
- 9:50There we go
- 10:13Some reason I think I'm wrong, but it's got be, uh, the high-end rasp it like a,
- 10:18uh, Honda vtech or something like that.
- 10:20It, it's a four cylinder for sure.
- 10:23. Oh wow.
- 10:24Did I post the wrong one?
- 10:27I gotta double check.
- 10:28Are you guys sure it's a four cylinder?
- 10:31I never said four cylinder, but it's got the high end ration.
- 10:33It's like a, uh, Honda with a fart can on it when you rev it up to the top end.
- 10:38I, uh, do, do, do we, uh, oh, I don't even know.
- 10:42Do, if we want to phone a friend on that one.
- 10:43Judd, are you shaking your head that that's a no go for you too?
- 10:46I, I don't know.
- 10:47I wouldn't phone me if I were you.
- 10:53I'd like, I would like to phone Eric.
- 10:57That's a zero for both of you guys.
- 11:00It's uh, it's an Alfa Romeo V6.
- 11:02Negative, Ghost Rider.
- 11:04It is a Dodge Viper RT10.
- 11:06Oh my god.
- 11:07Seriously?
- 11:09So you take my two answers, you combine them, and you got ten cylinders.
- 11:14100%.
- 11:15Alright.
- 11:16Next up.
- 11:17Here we go.
- 11:31That's definitely a Mustang, a Coyote Mustang, or what?
- 11:38That's my final answer.
- 11:39, is that your final?
- 11:39Is that your final answer?
- 11:41That is my final answer.
- 11:42Coyote Mustang.
- 11:43Damn.
- 11:44I'm honestly thinking, uh, one of the, uh, new Mopars, V8 Mopars.
- 11:50It's a GM.
- 11:52It's a new Camaro.
- 11:54A Fox body Mustang.
- 11:57That one was the Fox body.
- 11:58That was the Fox body Mustang with the H pipe and all of the stuff we've been
- 12:01talking about all these previous episodes.
- 12:03Can you believe that?
- 12:04That's the sound of a Fox body.
- 12:06So I had the car, I had the wrong generation.
- 12:09I had the car and the motor.
- 12:11Does that help?
- 12:14All right, so we'll go with uh, the next one up wait Who gets points for that?
- 12:19I I gave you guys I gave you half a point brad because you did say ford mustang
- 12:23But it what you didn't specify the exact car, which I said five I said five
- 12:28liter But I also I said coyote though.
- 12:31Yeah, you said coyote though.
- 12:32So I gave you the coyote still five liter Yeah, okay.
- 12:35I thought coyote was bigger.
- 12:37No, it's bigger in the gt 350 I think so like a 5.
- 12:412 or something like that.
- 12:42All right.
- 12:42Here's one for you
- 12:53That is daniel's 1.
- 12:5480 All right, dan, let's start with you what is that We're
- 13:00gonna go with the harley daveson most likely v20 of some sort.
- 13:03That is 100 correct Did you tell the difference between a flathead and
- 13:09knucklehead and all of them do you know what era this is from That one,
- 13:15honestly, would sound the most good.
- 13:17Let's do it again.
- 13:18See if I can.
- 13:20Uh, that was a Harley Davidson.
- 13:21V, V, uh, twins, twin V twin.
- 13:25I think you're a little late on that one, Brad.
- 13:27It's definitely older 'cause I can hear the carburetor suck in air.
- 13:29So I would probably say probably like a knucklehead.
- 13:33By the way, the, the sound is so at many, at as many bike people know
- 13:39that, especially the Harleys panhead, knuckleheads, uh, flatheads all, whatever.
- 13:43This is actually a 93 Harley.
- 13:46It's actually relative the Evo then, correct.
- 13:49You better have some Ducatis mixed in here.
- 13:54I got all sorts of fun stuff mixed in here.
- 13:57All right.
- 14:11Can't tell what it is, but it sounds like me driving.
- 14:14It does.
- 14:16Beating the crap out of it, whatever it is.
- 14:19You can hear when it slides off track.
- 14:24Can I venture a guess while Daniel is Yes, because you are
- 14:26up next, so please, by all means.
- 14:29I think it's an Audi 5 cylinder.
- 14:31So, I'm curious what makes you think that because you heard
- 14:36the Viper earlier, right?
- 14:38So five cylinders and 10 cylinders sound very, very similar.
- 14:41That that's your hint that you're wrong.
- 14:43I'm just letting, just kind of let you know.
- 14:46Brad, did you hear a turbo in that?
- 14:49I thought I heard a turbo.
- 14:51That's why I was going that way.
- 14:53Let me listen again.
- 14:54Dan, would you like to throw a guess out there?
- 14:56I got a feeling that's the uh, hold on my brain just took it on.
- 15:01Yeah Under deceleration.
- 15:03I think it's the vr6 Well, he hinted that it's a v10.
- 15:08So it's got to be a v10 It is not All right.
- 15:12It's hard to listen to this while i've got earbuds in so so it's going to be a little
- 15:16tricky It's I was hoping you guys would say non vtech honda It's actually a two
- 15:22liter Fiat motor from a one 24 or one 31.
- 15:25So if you really listen to it, it's high, it's a high strung four cylinder.
- 15:29It also sounds like a Honda without VTEC.
- 15:32It sounded like a BMW 2002 motor to me.
- 15:35Yes.
- 15:36All of that.
- 15:36Exactly.
- 15:37Exactly.
- 15:40It sounded like the Hans Stuck Audi to me.
- 15:43All right, here's the next one.
- 15:46I think Brad should know this one.
- 16:02No pressure.
- 16:06No pressure, buddy.
- 16:07I mean, On who?
- 16:11On you.
- 16:12Like, this one, I'm thinking you should know the sound of this engine.
- 16:16Well, it's definitely a turbo.
- 16:20Turbo, banging a rev limiter.
- 16:22It's not a turbo.
- 16:23It's not a normal track car.
- 16:25It's one of those skidding cars.
- 16:27What do they call those?
- 16:28Drifters!
- 16:29That or just somebody in the parking lot doing a burnout.
- 16:32That was such a boomer thing for Brett to say.
- 16:35It's one of them skidder cars!
- 16:37One of those people that drive slow but sideways.
- 16:41Dan, do you want to guess?
- 16:43Um, I don't know.
- 16:45I'm gonna say like a Supra.
- 16:49A Gen 4 Supra.
- 16:51He is correct.
- 16:52It is a 2JZ Toyota Supra.
- 16:57So Brad, unless you had something better than that, you hit
- 17:00the nail right on the head.
- 17:01Well he did, I, I said a 4th gen, which is the 2JZ.
- 17:05Same car, yeah, yeah.
- 17:07Alright, there we go, we'll do it that way then.
- 17:09Fairness.
- 17:09I mean, that's how we've been doing it up to this point, I don't get it.
- 17:12Yeah.
- 17:15So, so far, 10, 10, 10 rounds in.
- 17:17Dan has a whopping 3 points.
- 17:19And Brad has three and a half, so there you go.
- 17:24You're leading by half a point, Brad.
- 17:26It's a tight race.
- 17:28It's a terrible race.
- 17:31Right.
- 17:31This is like the Special Olympics, the car sounds.
- 17:43Dan's like, I got this already.
- 17:47I'm good.
- 17:48I'm going to go with Panos, Alex.
- 17:51Panos.
- 17:57I'm going to have to go against you on that one, Brad, because that one I'm going
- 18:00to say is most likely by the sound of the Cummins turbo diesel, 6 BP most likely.
- 18:05Oh, I knew, I knew this was going to get you.
- 18:09It's a power stroke?
- 18:11No, he's right in the number of cylinders.
- 18:14But it's actually a Buick Grand National.
- 18:18Hmm.
- 18:193.8.
- 18:20Yeah.
- 18:203.8 Twin Turbo.
- 18:22That has such a diesel sound to it.
- 18:24It does.
- 18:25And when it's idling, 'cause I cut part of that out, it sounds like a V eight.
- 18:28So it's a really deceptive car until you get on it and then you hear
- 18:32the turbo whistle and on Decel you hear that six cylinder sound and
- 18:36that, and that's where it comes in.
- 18:38So I, I had a feeling somebody was gonna say Cummins diesel, but yeah,
- 18:41it's actually a Buick Grand National.
- 18:43All right.
- 18:46Next up.
- 19:05Are we really going to air this?
- 19:06Cause I feel like it's going to kill all of our credibility as car enthusiasts.
- 19:12The correct answers.
- 19:13Yeah.
- 19:14A hundred percent.
- 19:14So it'll be a three minute video.
- 19:17It's definitely from inside the car.
- 19:19That is correct.
- 19:21But can you tell what it is European is my guess Would you
- 19:27like to phone a friend on that one?
- 19:31How far off how far off am I I think it's a four cylinder honda ding ding
- 19:36ding ding ding that is correct Really?
- 19:39Yes.
- 19:40It's actually a 99 Civic Si and it's not Matt's.
- 19:45I know it's not Matt's because I can still hear after listening to it.
- 19:49All right.
- 19:51Lucky number 13.
- 20:04What's with that VTEC at seven, seven seconds.
- 20:11He found another gear.
- 20:13So what's, what's your, what's your play on that one?
- 20:16What's my play.
- 20:18I think it's your Audi TT with the new motor.
- 20:25Oh, can I just say, because the amount of wind.
- 20:30That I heard.
- 20:30I'm thinking it's a, uh, crotch rocket of some sort.
- 20:34You're, you're close.
- 20:35You're close.
- 20:36Does anybody want, so it is a motorcycle.
- 20:38I'm going to give you guys a hint.
- 20:39We'll make this a little bit easier.
- 20:40It is a motorcycle.
- 20:42Would you like to guess again, the GSXR 1000?
- 20:48Nah, I don't think it had a low enough tone to be a Jer.
- 20:51I don't know.
- 20:52We'll say I don't, I I don't know.
- 20:56Busa, go ahead.
- 20:58What were you just about to say?
- 21:00He's right.
- 21:01No.
- 21:01Okay.
- 21:02It is, because I was gonna say it.
- 21:04It didn't sound deep enough to be abusa.
- 21:05It is a Honda CVX 1000 flat six.
- 21:14So if you re listen to it, it sounds a lot like a 911, except for, like
- 21:18you mentioned, it has that really extreme VTEC sound because it's
- 21:23doing like 15, 000 RPM, right?
- 21:25Once he gets it up, get it up on there.
- 21:27And Dan was correct.
- 21:28The extra wind noise.
- 21:29Uh pointed out the fact that it was a motorcycle again Like I
- 21:34said, some of these are going to be tricky, but it's fun.
- 21:36It's it's hard to tell them apart sometimes Did I get a quarter
- 21:40point for knowing it was a bike?
- 21:41Can I get how many flat engines go that kind of rpm this has turned into
- 21:49the uh bargaining show It's it's not about how many points we get right.
- 21:52We're bargaining for points I'm really curious to see what
- 21:57you guys say about this one.
- 22:18Briggs and Stratton?
- 22:21Miata without a muffler?
- 22:24No, I'm definitely thinking, I'm definitely thinking tractor of some sort,
- 22:29but I don't think of Briggs and Stratton.
- 22:30I'm thinking that's more along the lines of a Kohler.
- 22:36No, I'm thinking more like a older, like Farmall, Alice Chandler,
- 22:39Minneapolis Mullins type sound, by the way, the revving it up sounds.
- 22:44Is it a gasser or is it a diesel?
- 22:47I wouldn't, I'm not going to, I'm not going to hit you on the brand because
- 22:50there's so many, you are correct.
- 22:51It is a tractor.
- 22:52I'm not going to hit you on the brand, but is it a gasser or is it a diesel?
- 22:57Those are tough because it's hard to tell a difference on some of them, but I would
- 23:02they're all low Lower compression on those tractors for the point gas or diesel.
- 23:09Um, I'm gonna say gas or on Let's say diesel What's the coin right?
- 23:18All right half a point to Dan it is a Kubota diesel that was straight
- 23:22piped A whopping 41 horsepower.
- 23:28Actually, probably not.
- 23:30That's probably like a whopping 14 horsepower.
- 23:32Right.
- 23:35300 foot pounds of torque.
- 23:39Now we're going to test Bradley's knowledge.
- 23:40Brad, you're
- 23:56up.
- 23:56Do you have a guess?
- 23:57Well, it's definitely a race car.
- 23:58They're at Road Atlanta.
- 24:01I I think it's the 9 11 RSR.
- 24:05I don't have a guess, but I have a question for, uh, Brad, you
- 24:10say Rhode, Atlanta, what, what makes you think Rhode, Atlanta?
- 24:13Uh, the announcer said Rhode, Atlanta.
- 24:15Oh, I didn't hear that.
- 24:18If I had to guess.
- 24:20Hold on, let me listen to it again.
- 24:22You might have a, you might have a lifeline currently available
- 24:25at that time you're on zoom.
- 24:28Yeah.
- 24:28So other than other than I have nothing on.
- 24:31I don't agree with Brad about being Rhode Island though.
- 24:36Where it is not what it is.
- 24:37It is actually it was that so he's correct.
- 24:40It was at Rhode Atlanta.
- 24:41It was the debut Uh, of the Corvette C8 R, which I thought somebody would
- 24:47have said like Ferrari Challenge Car or whatever, because they sound very similar.
- 24:51So that new, what is it, LT1 that's in that thing with the split exhaust, it
- 24:56sounds totally different than what we're used to from a, from a V8 Corvette.
- 25:01Easily mistaken for a Ferrari these days.
- 25:04Uh, both in looks and in sound.
- 25:06All right.
- 25:07Next up.
- 25:07I feel like we really need somebody that knows.
- 25:29What they're doing to be on this.
- 25:31So we need Sam or somebody, not us.
- 25:35This one is for your auditory amusement.
- 25:40You're you're listening.
- 25:41Pleasure.
- 25:43C seven R it is a race car, but it's an, I'll give you a hint.
- 25:48It's an older race car.
- 25:51One of my favorites.
- 25:54Not that that matters to anybody.
- 25:56Oh, is it the Hans took out?
- 25:57No, there's no turbo.
- 25:58It's not the Audi.
- 25:59One of your favorites.
- 26:02This is just a test to see who knows you better on this question.
- 26:06Uh, I'm going to go with Panos.
- 26:11Eventually, that will hit.
- 26:14Is it a rally car, or like an MSA type?
- 26:17It is a prototype.
- 26:19Prototype.
- 26:20Yeah.
- 26:21Ohhhh, it's the Mercedes.
- 26:26The Mercedes prototype from Forza.
- 26:27I can't remember the name of the car, but it's the Mercedes.
- 26:31Does Dan have an answer?
- 26:34Panos.
- 26:34Ha ha ha ha!
- 26:37It is in fact the Sauber Mercedes C9 from 1988.
- 26:42That is correct.
- 26:43So I give you, I give you, I give you the point on that one, Brad.
- 26:48Definitely.
- 26:48Cause I mean, even when he said Corvette, he had C in there.
- 26:50So, I mean, he just had the manufacturer wrong.
- 26:52All right, here we go.
- 26:58He said they are challenging.
- 27:34Uh, American V8 on that.
- 27:35Um, but I'm debating which one.
- 27:40So Bradley, like while he figures that out, would you like to put in a guest?
- 27:45Uh, I think it's a Camaro with an LS three.
- 27:49So a 6.
- 27:502 liter Brett says no.
- 27:52As someone who has one, he would know or a coyote V8.
- 27:57It's not a LS three.
- 28:00I'll give you a hint.
- 28:01It's not American.
- 28:02Yeah, it's it's kind of weird something weird.
- 28:06Okay I've listened to about eight times now, so it's an eight I'm just gonna
- 28:15say that it has it has eight cylinders.
- 28:19You gotta listen to it In the higher revs, that's what's more
- 28:23distinct and it revs pretty high.
- 28:26So it's got a, I'm thinking exotic.
- 28:30You all would be very disappointed to know it's a four liter Hassat w eight.
- 28:37That's not what I was thinking.
- 28:39So that's how high, but how high does that motor rev that?
- 28:42Is that a high revving motor?
- 28:45It, it, it'll, it'll spin up above seven for sure.
- 28:48I don't know.
- 28:48Oh, okay.
- 28:49Actual red line off the top of my head.
- 28:50But most, it'll only do it once, but it'll do it.
- 28:53I mean, most, most vrs will turn 72 to 75.
- 28:57So it, it's, it all depends on how it's tuned.
- 29:00That one in particular had an exhaust, which made it easier to hear.
- 29:03But yeah, there is that distinct wooky sound in there
- 29:05that makes it very different.
- 29:07It's just, yeah, I, I heard the flutter.
- 29:08Yeah, exactly.
- 29:09It's very specific to the, the W and the VR motors, so.
- 29:14All right, here we go.
- 29:27I'm hoping this one's a gimme.
- 29:29I'd say there's no gimme's on this.
- 29:36I'm going with, it's a manual and they made it to third gear.
- 29:40What do you say?
- 29:42He can confirm that it's a manual and they made it the third gear
- 29:46before the recording stopped.
- 29:48It is not American.
- 29:50It is not a Miata and it is not a Peinos.
- 29:53I'm just laying it out there for you guys.
- 29:56Did you say it's not a manual?
- 29:58It is a manual.
- 29:59It is not.
- 30:00It is not.
- 30:01And so Dan put in a guess of.
- 30:04Oh, GK, Brad, you put it in a guess of what only God knows.
- 30:10Only God knows.
- 30:11Um, I'm going to say a four cylinder.
- 30:15Hey, you said at the beginning we could name the number of
- 30:18cylinders and the manufacturer.
- 30:21That's hard.
- 30:22That is all that is required.
- 30:24That is correct.
- 30:25Give it another listen.
- 30:26It is not a four cylinder.
- 30:28Is it a BMW straight six?
- 30:31But yet so far it is German.
- 30:34It is a Porsche flat six.
- 30:36It's 2.
- 30:377 liters to be exact, but it is a Porsche flat six.
- 30:42I hate this game.
- 30:44Yeah.
- 30:45I, I struggle with telling the difference by looking at them, nonetheless, seeing
- 30:51like hearing them because my hearing shots are, they all sound the same to me.
- 30:56I think it'd be more interesting to hear.
- 30:58All the sounds from inside the car where the exhaust doesn't necessarily take over.
- 31:06I don't know if that would be possible.
- 31:07Certain cars are known for their exhaust note though.
- 31:10And that's how they're true.
- 31:11Viable.
- 31:13Like you can pick out, you can pick out a three 50 Z from a crowd very easily.
- 31:17You can pick out a flat nine 11.
- 31:18There's a Honda without having to be in the car.
- 31:22It's just.
- 31:23You know, how much you, I guess you pay attention at the end of the day.
- 31:36I'm thinking an older engine for this one by the way it sounds.
- 31:40You are correct.
- 31:41I think it's an old Mopar Hemi.
- 31:44Like a Hemi Charger or Hemi Cuda?
- 31:46No, it's not revving very high.
- 31:49You are correct Brad in the number of cylinders though.
- 31:52It is an eight cylinder.
- 31:54Am I correct on the manufacturer?
- 31:55Negative guesswriter.
- 31:57Negative guesswriter.
- 31:57Which one did you guess?
- 31:59Mopar.
- 32:00Is it American?
- 32:01Yes, it is American.
- 32:03I'm gonna throw this out there just to be off the wall.
- 32:05AMC.
- 32:07I wish it was.
- 32:08What'd you say?
- 32:10AMC.
- 32:12Cause it almost has like, some of the old Javelins had a similar sound to that.
- 32:16So I'll give you a hint.
- 32:18It's a straight 8.
- 32:19Really?
- 32:20So it's older than most everybody here.
- 32:23That is 100 percent true.
- 32:25Packard.
- 32:27That is correct.
- 32:27It is a Packard straight 8, 327 cubic inch.
- 32:32Packard straight eight.
- 32:3378 horsepower.
- 32:34All right, let's see if we can get this one.
- 32:36It's been guessed like 10 times.
- 32:49Panos?
- 32:50Panos.
- 32:51You know, a lot of engines can go into Panos.
- 32:54Fox body Panos.
- 32:56I heard something chirping.
- 32:58Yeah, is that tire squeaking in between shifts?
- 33:01Turbo blow off.
- 33:02That is correct.
- 33:04It's the Audi five cylinder?
- 33:06That is also correct.
- 33:08We'd get that right sooner or later.
- 33:11As I said, you've only guessed it like ten times.
- 33:14No, I've guessed it once.
- 33:17Seems like more.
- 33:19So what you heard, that chirping is the blow off, the flutter.
- 33:22It's a very classic 80s rally car.
- 33:26It happens to be the 1980 No, excuse me.
- 33:31Yeah, the 1989 Audi 90 ITU car.
- 33:34So Hans Stuck's car.
- 33:36That's the one.
- 33:37That's the one.
- 33:38That's the one.
- 33:39Well, I'm sure it's not on the list, but I'm gonna throw it out there.
- 33:42It's a very distinct sound.
- 33:44There's a video out there on the internet of a guy with a Subaru.
- 33:48It has a duck call on the blow off valve.
- 33:51Very unique in between shifts.
- 33:53Quack, quack, quack, quack.
- 34:01Do you guys want to keep going or are you done?
- 34:04Let's keep it rolling, buddy.
- 34:05Alright, hold on.
- 34:07Uh We need to get Brad involved in this.
- 34:10He's got to give some answers.
- 34:12Yeah, we're only up to like three.
- 34:15So far, Brad has a commanding lead at a whopping seven points.
- 34:21Oh, wow.
- 34:22No, six points, my bad.
- 34:25Seven, seven points.
- 34:28Dan, you got three and a half.
- 34:30You really gotta make up the difference here.
- 34:42That's a drag car.
- 34:44Or it could just be a hot rod out cruise.
- 34:47Straight it it's, it's a Cams V eight.
- 34:49Yeah.
- 34:50Push rod V eight.
- 34:52I mean, magic eight Ball says all signs.
- 34:55Point to yes on that one.
- 34:57The question is, I'm leaning which of the big three is it?
- 35:01I'm leaning towards it being a big block by the tone of it, but
- 35:04I could be wrong 'cause exhaust can throw that off a bit, but.
- 35:07I'll go with a big block Chevy V8.
- 35:11I'm leaning towards that, but I can't really nail down the fire and order
- 35:14in the exhaust sound of all the things to like critique the audio for, right.
- 35:20I mean, I, we've narrowed it down to Ford.
- 35:23Chevy or Dodge and he's worried about the firing order.
- 35:27I can't tell if it's got a K and N or not Different it might have
- 35:32that MSD ignition system All right.
- 35:35All right.
- 35:35All right.
- 35:36I'm calling it.
- 35:37It is a dodge Charger 440 hemi.
- 35:42I said that I heard it.
- 35:46So did I I said that like four answers ago.
- 35:49You weren't listening All right Here's one for you guys.
- 35:53This ought to challenge your ears a little bit Oh, like the rest of the competition.
- 35:57I'm the only one who hasn't.
- 35:59How many points does Dan have?
- 36:02Like a big three.
- 36:03Okay, just checking.
- 36:05That's all he needs.
- 36:20I'm going to guess it's an open wheel car.
- 36:23I think Judd has like half an idea what it might be.
- 36:26I knew what all of them were.
- 36:31I'm just humble and quiet.
- 36:32Alright smartass, I call my lifeline Judd.
- 36:35Let me listen again, hang on.
- 36:38Yeah, I can't stop listening to it, I think it sounds like sex.
- 36:41I have raved about this car many times before.
- 36:45What'd you say?
- 36:46I said, I have raved about this car many times before.
- 36:49It has a very distinct sound, very high revving engine, but it is not open wheel.
- 36:55Although it sounds like an open wheel car.
- 36:57It sounds like an IMSA car.
- 36:59You got to go back in time a little bit.
- 37:01So it's just a Trans Am car?
- 37:03Right in between.
- 37:05Different, different continent.
- 37:07Oh, British touring car.
- 37:10DTM.
- 37:12Oh, did domestic touring.
- 37:13You've raved about the car.
- 37:16Is it German or Italian?
- 37:20See, that's the problem, Eric.
- 37:21If you've raved about it, I would have had to actually paid attention and not
- 37:24argue and I normally argue with you.
- 37:26So.
- 37:27I don't remember what we argued about half the time.
- 37:30Is it that Alfa?
- 37:31That Alfa Romeo, uh, 155 or whatever it is?
- 37:35Ding, ding, ding!
- 37:37Oh, no way.
- 37:38Yeah, it's the Alfa 155 V6 Turbo.
- 37:41That thing, it's incredible.
- 37:42It revs to like 12, 000 RPM, so that's why it sounds like an open wheel car.
- 37:46It sounds amazing.
- 37:47Exactly.
- 37:48We can I want my car to sound like that.
- 37:51Alright, here we go, here we go.
- 37:53There's only a few of these left.
- 38:06I think this is a pretty familiar sound.
- 38:09We talked about these cars on episode three of the podcast.
- 38:14What was episode three?
- 38:15What car should I buy?
- 38:17Well, it's not a Mark IV.
- 38:18I think it's a Nissan 350Z.
- 38:20The MBQ?
- 38:22No.
- 38:23No, no, no.
- 38:25It's not a 180.
- 38:28It's not a four cylinder.
- 38:30It's not a 911.
- 38:31I wouldn't put the same thing in twice, so.
- 38:34That high end raspiness is what's throwing me off as to what it is.
- 38:38Like in between shifts where it gets all raspy.
- 38:41We talked about it in the podcast.
- 38:43That's like saying it's on the website.
- 38:46Yeah.
- 38:46The what?
- 38:46Nobody reads.
- 38:48. All right.
- 38:48You guys did.
- 38:49It's not A BMW.
- 38:51It is A BMW.
- 38:52Oh, so it's E 36 46.
- 38:56Oh, the bigger motor.
- 38:57The 3.2.
- 38:59All right, here we go.
- 39:00Here we go.
- 39:00Here we go.
- 39:01You got one?
- 39:01Those
- 39:15of you playing at home, nailing your boat.
- 39:17Slater . Brett's winning because he didn't answer . If only you
- 39:24could earn negative points.
- 39:26Can't be wrong if you don't answer, right?
- 39:28You win 100 percent of the contest you don't compete in.
- 39:32Sounds like my Dodge van from 1982.
- 39:35I hear a lot of engine fan noise.
- 39:38Kind of a ticky sound.
- 39:40I'll give you a hint.
- 39:41It's a flat motor.
- 39:42Yeah, we run into these a lot.
- 39:44Not a Subaru.
- 39:46So it's air cooled.
- 39:47But there's a lot of cooling fan sound.
- 39:50That's kind of odd.
- 39:51Because all the air is sucking in.
- 39:53Yeah, but it's usually not that loud.
- 39:57It's almost whiny.
- 39:58The fan sounds almost whiny like a supercharger, but it's
- 40:01not a supercharger sound.
- 40:02That's why I was saying it sounds like, you know, engine fan noise.
- 40:05Is it a GT3 RS?
- 40:08Is it new?
- 40:08Like a 3.
- 40:096 flat six 911 GT3 RS?
- 40:13No, it is, it's older.
- 40:15It's an older vehicle.
- 40:17Yeah, he said air cooled, yeah.
- 40:18Could just be like a 911 SC air cooled.
- 40:24I'll give you one hint.
- 40:25Is it Shane's car?
- 40:28It is French.
- 40:29No.
- 40:29They said it's French, would that make it a Renault?
- 40:33You're close.
- 40:33Hey, what was the hint?
- 40:34I didn't, I'm sorry, I missed it.
- 40:35The hint is that it's French.
- 40:37Oh.
- 40:38It is a baguette.
- 40:40Wouldn't be running if it's French, then.
- 40:43It's a Vespa.
- 40:44It would be running, it would just be running away.
- 40:47So it's a Citroen or a Peugeot?
- 40:52He's so close.
- 40:54Is it Bugatti?
- 40:56No.
- 40:56Bugatti is French.
- 40:58How many air cooled flat Bugattis do you know?
- 41:02I don't know of any Bugatti, so I don't know.
- 41:04Alright, I'm calling it.
- 41:05It's a Deux Chevaux.
- 41:09Look at that!
- 41:10Judd's got the sign up.
- 41:11How did you know?
- 41:13He just wrote it down real quick.
- 41:16It was the logical answer, man.
- 41:17I was thinking it was a VW bug until you said it was French.
- 41:21Well, I could tell it wasn't a bug by the sound of it.
- 41:23Actually, that's what we're doing.
- 41:25The whole thing is because of the sound of it.
- 41:30I could tell it wasn't a bug because the bug has a much more
- 41:34distinct exhaust sound than that.
- 41:36And I don't recall the VW bug having that much of like a fan noise.
- 41:40A Volkswagen bug.
- 41:42Air cooled would have had that sort of high pitched ticking sound a little
- 41:48more, but the fan noise was pretty loud.
- 41:51It sounded like a, like a V8 that's running too hot where the fan
- 41:56clutch locks in and I did post Yeah,
- 42:24it sounds like another screaming race car.
- 42:26I can't really tell much between these.
- 42:30Sounds good though.
- 42:31Listen to it on the downshift.
- 42:34That's the giveaway what listen to it on the d cell downshift.
- 42:39Oh, yeah, he downshifts twice Or lets off then downshifts.
- 42:45It puts it into a category of very few cars from the 70s.
- 42:50I'll put it that way.
- 42:52With that type of sound.
- 42:54What type of sound?
- 42:56That, the sound we play.
- 42:58No, no, no, no, no.
- 43:01He blips it twice at the end.
- 43:04And that's the giveaway, is the sound on D cell of that particular motor.
- 43:10It can be easily confused with another car that Steve McQueen might
- 43:15have driven, but it is not that car.
- 43:17So there's your only hint.
- 43:19I'm drawing a blank with this one.
- 43:21Panos.
- 43:24Sorry to, sorry to inform you.
- 43:26It is not a Panos.
- 43:27It is a Ferrari flat 12.
- 43:30Yeah.
- 43:31We run into those a lot.
- 43:33It could be easily mistaken for the Porsche nine 17 also
- 43:37being a flat 12 in the same era.
- 43:39So specifically it was a Ferrari three 12 BB, the Berlinetta boxer.
- 43:44So there you go.
- 43:45It's like an 8 million car right now.
- 43:48Uh, yeah, pretty much.
- 43:49Pretty much.
- 43:51So we'll go with this.
- 44:09There's that sound.
- 44:11Furman used to have one of these.
- 44:13He put a lot of money into restoring it, too.
- 44:15You're close, Brett.
- 44:17Air cooled engine?
- 44:19Yes.
- 44:19Definitely.
- 44:20I'm thinking either one of the air cooled Porsches, the VW Van, or Bug.
- 44:28Because, I mean, they use the same engine amongst all of them, so.
- 44:30Yeah, they all sound very similar.
- 44:33All right, is it a four cylinder or a six cylinder?
- 44:35It is a four.
- 44:36Well, I wasn't expecting an answer.
- 44:38I was asking these guys, but it's a four.
- 44:43I don't know.
- 44:43How would you differentiate this?
- 44:45I mean, it's a very common engine.
- 44:48So would you differentiate from one car to another?
- 44:53I mean, you're looking for the specific model.
- 44:55No, no, it just, uh, we, in the beginning, we said number
- 45:00of cylinders and manufacturer.
- 45:01It's the Volkswagen four cylinder.
- 45:03That is correct.
- 45:06Specifically a 1300 beetle engine with the, with the little springs
- 45:11removed from the exhaust because it doesn't have the whistle.
- 45:14Which is indicative of a bug.
- 45:17I love Judd holding up the signs.
- 45:19It's so good.
- 45:21Use your words, Judd.
- 45:22Use your voice.
- 45:24This microphone's busted.
- 45:26I don't want to And this is the last one, as a matter of fact.
- 45:30Which is going to be a bit of a twist.
- 45:32So listen carefully.
- 45:57Well, I'm gonna throw it out there because you said it would be in here and
- 46:00it hasn't been said yet, but awesome.
- 46:06Negative a million points.
- 46:09I think it's your VR6.
- 46:13No, I don't think it's his VR6.
- 46:16Do you guys want a hint?
- 46:18Yes.
- 46:20It is British.
- 46:21A Jaguar?
- 46:25And 6, 8, or 12?
- 46:308.
- 46:32I'm thinking 12.
- 46:33Ding ding ding ding!
- 46:35It is in fact a Jerk 12 cylinder.
- 46:39Out of an XJS, which happens to be a manual, which I thought was really cool.
- 46:43And the guy is driving down a windy road.
- 46:45So that's where you get the nice shifting sounds through it.
- 46:47It's deceiving because you might recognize that it may be as a six
- 46:51cylinder, but it's actually a V12.
- 46:53So there you go.
- 46:58So with that being said, I guess sounds can be deceiving.
- 47:01I'm really kind of surprised on some of those where you guys are like, oh, that's
- 47:04a four banger and it's like really an eight or a five and you know, whatever.
- 47:08So that's, that's kind of interesting.
- 47:10I guess I've never, I, I don't know.
- 47:12I mean, for me, I guess I've always thought it was kind of easy to
- 47:15pick out cars, but maybe it's not.
- 47:17Maybe it's, Maybe it's super deceptive.
- 47:20So I guess that's a challenge that you're throwing out there, that we need to come
- 47:23up with some sounds to test just you.
- 47:25There you go.
- 47:26Sure, man.
- 47:26Send it.
- 47:28I'd love to be on the other end of the That'll be part two, everyone.
- 47:32Oh, nice.
- 47:34Stump the chump.
- 47:41And on that note, I think it's time to end.
