  SPEAKER_05: Where's that?
• 0:47
SPEAKER_05: You know, we had we've had uh some technical issues uh this morning.
• 0:51
SPEAKER_05: We were all pumped up thinking we're gonna be ready to go this morning.
• 0:54
  SPEAKER_05: Good to go.
• 0:56
  SPEAKER_05: And guess what?
• 0:57
  SPEAKER_05: We went all right.
• 0:58
SPEAKER_04: The power went out chatting, down at one side of the room, I'm at the desk doing it.
• 1:05
SPEAKER_04: And everything goes dark, doing all my greatness, and the everything just lights went out, everything was scary.
• 1:10
SPEAKER_05: And now I've got a refrigerator over there that says power outage.
• 1:15
SPEAKER_05: And I'm going, okay, so how do you reset that?
• 1:18
  SPEAKER_05: Beep.
• 1:19
  SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it keeps beeping.
• 1:20
  SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
• 1:21
SPEAKER_03: Computer, so hopefully unplug and replug.
• 1:23
SPEAKER_05: Yeah, well, it it is a refrigerator, so you just don't do that very easily because you gotta roll it out and do all this other because his refrigerator is running.
• 1:31
  SPEAKER_05: It is.
• 1:32
SPEAKER_05: Did you ever catch it call call the grocery store?
• 1:34
  SPEAKER_03: No.
• 1:34
  SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
• 1:36
SPEAKER_03: Did you do that, Mars?
• 1:37
  SPEAKER_03: Oh, yeah, yeah.
• 1:38
SPEAKER_03: You got Prince Albert in the can?
• 1:39
  SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
• 1:40
SPEAKER_03: Well, you better let him out.
• 1:41
SPEAKER_05: Yeah, because he might suffocate.
• 1:42
SPEAKER_04: Well, there's one thing we did do and then hang up at uh where we'd be at Kathy's house, and around she a couple of two like three houses off a corner, and on the corner around around the corner was a pizzeria.
• 1:54
SPEAKER_04: And her Kathy's phone number was one number off from the pizzeria.
• 1:59
SPEAKER_04: So they would call, miss the number, I would answer the phone, and I would take their pizza order.
• 2:05
SPEAKER_04: When they'd show up over there because we would use the pizza place too.
• 2:07
SPEAKER_04: I have the menu, I'd all that in you know, 45 minutes.
• 2:10
  SPEAKER_04: That's great.
• 2:11
SPEAKER_04: So they'd show up and there's no pizza.
• 2:13
  SPEAKER_04: Pretty much.
• 2:17
SPEAKER_04: Those were the those were the good old days.
• 2:19
SPEAKER_04: Beat your Prince Albert in a can.
• 2:21
  SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
• 2:23
  SPEAKER_04: Mars.
• 2:24
  SPEAKER_04: Yeah, refrigerator running.
• 2:25
  SPEAKER_03: Let's go to California.
• 2:27
  SPEAKER_04: Okay, let's do it.
• 2:29
  SPEAKER_05: Okay, go ahead.
• 2:32
  SPEAKER_05: There he is.
• 2:33
  SPEAKER_05: Good morning.
• 2:34
  SPEAKER_05: Good morning.
• 2:35
SPEAKER_05: Ladies and gentlemen, truly Adams, a 15-year-old racing phenom, live from Riverside, California.
• 2:43
SPEAKER_05: Are you are you do you live in Riverside?
• 2:45
SPEAKER_00: I live in Merino Valley.
• 2:46
  SPEAKER_05: Merino Valley.
• 2:47
  SPEAKER_05: Okay.
• 2:48
  SPEAKER_05: Did you no?
• 2:49
SPEAKER_05: You you're not old enough to have ever gone to Riverside.
• 2:52
  SPEAKER_05: You've heard of Riverside, I'm sure.
• 2:54
SPEAKER_00: No, I actually own we own a track in Riverside called Adams Moswers Park, which I'm actually at right now.
• 3:01
  SPEAKER_05: Oh, really?
• 3:02
SPEAKER_05: There's they still have a track in Riverside.
• 3:05
  SPEAKER_00: Yes.
• 3:05
  SPEAKER_00: It's been here for 65 years.
• 3:08
  SPEAKER_05: Oh my god.
• 3:09
SPEAKER_05: Was it a competitor to the Riverside racetrack that NASCAR and all ran on back in the day?
• 3:15
  SPEAKER_05: It's a I understand it's a neighborhood now.
• 3:17
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but no, not really.
• 3:18
SPEAKER_00: It's it's more of a go-karting track, so where we all see before you start going into NASCAR and all that stuff.
• 3:27
  SPEAKER_05: Gotcha.
• 3:29
SPEAKER_05: Are you really 15 years old?
• 3:31
SPEAKER_00: Yes, I am really 15 years old.
• 3:34
SPEAKER_03: Now that Grin looks fifteen, but he doesn't sound fifteen and he doesn't look it.
• 3:39
SPEAKER_05: No, and he doesn't act it either.
• 3:41
  SPEAKER_05: That's why I asked.
• 3:42
SPEAKER_05: How old are you, Mike?
• 3:43
  SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
• 3:43
  SPEAKER_05: Yeah, don't ask.
• 3:45
SPEAKER_05: Yeah, well, Mars is really old, so we don't have to worry about that.
• 3:49
SPEAKER_05: So you you're at the track right now?
• 3:51
  SPEAKER_00: Yes, I am.
• 3:53
SPEAKER_05: What do you got on the agenda today?
• 3:56
SPEAKER_00: Today's agenda, we were we were testing for Supernats, which is the biggest race of the year.
• 4:01
SPEAKER_00: So that's in two weeks.
• 4:03
SPEAKER_00: So I'll be driving a little bit today and uh just hanging out.
• 4:08
SPEAKER_05: And what will you be driving?
• 4:09
SPEAKER_00: I'll be driving a KZ cart, which is the fastest in a fastest fastest motor in a go-kart.
• 4:17
SPEAKER_00: So is it a shifter?
• 4:18
SPEAKER_05: Is it a shifter cart?
• 4:20
  SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's a it's a pro class.
• 4:22
  SPEAKER_05: Pro class, yeah.
• 4:24
SPEAKER_05: So pro class, all of them have shifters.
• 4:27
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, pro class is either shifters or a cart named X30, so it's it's a direct drive and in and it's clutch driven, so it's more of a it's easier than I'd say easier than a shifter, but it's it's almost like an automatic then.
• 4:44
  SPEAKER_00: Yes, yes.
• 4:46
SPEAKER_03: Yes, how fast are we talking here?
• 4:49
SPEAKER_00: I've hit around 92 to 93 miles per hour.
• 4:54
SPEAKER_05: And this and this is like a road course?
• 4:56
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's it's a road course, probably around half a mile or a little bit more.
• 5:02
  SPEAKER_05: How many turns?
• 5:05
SPEAKER_00: It can range probably like 14, I think.
• 5:08
  SPEAKER_00: 14 or 15.
• 5:10
SPEAKER_05: So you really have to be on your game to do this, and your butt sitting what, an inch off the ground?
• 5:15
  SPEAKER_00: Probably less.
• 5:17
  SPEAKER_05: Less.
• 5:18
  SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
• 5:19
  SPEAKER_05: Um, I I am absolutely fascinated.
• 5:22
SPEAKER_05: And um, you know, I I was looking at uh your all of the information on you, and I'm going, this guy is really, really impressive.
• 5:35
  SPEAKER_05: He can't be 15, he's done too much.
• 5:37
  SPEAKER_05: Yeah, exactly.
• 5:38
SPEAKER_05: So who is it that is behind is it your dad or your mom?
• 5:43
SPEAKER_05: Who is it that supports you in all of these efforts?
• 5:46
SPEAKER_05: Because let me tell you something.
• 5:48
SPEAKER_05: As uh a volleyball parent, we spent a fortune on club volleyball.
• 5:56
SPEAKER_05: I can only imagine the expense that goes into your upbringing, sir.
• 6:02
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's a little bit different than that.
• 6:04
SPEAKER_05: Yeah, to say the least.
• 6:06
  SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
• 6:07
  SPEAKER_00: It's it's my mom helps a lot.
• 6:09
SPEAKER_00: My my dad does too.
• 6:10
SPEAKER_00: He's a pretty good coach sometimes, so sometimes he knows you what he's talking about.
• 6:16
SPEAKER_00: We'll see in the future.
• 6:17
SPEAKER_03: But most parents are that way.
• 6:19
  SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
• 6:20
SPEAKER_05: All right, so how what propelled you to get into this sport?
• 6:26
SPEAKER_00: More of that I wasn't good at any other sport, and this is kind of my my future as where I've been racing for now 11 years, and it's it's something that I love to do.
• 6:40
SPEAKER_05: So you started when you were four.
• 6:43
  SPEAKER_00: Yes.
• 6:45
SPEAKER_05: And what what was it that you drove at four years old?
• 6:50
SPEAKER_00: Well, at four years old, I started racing kick carts, and and it was it's been a journey since there.
• 6:59
  SPEAKER_05: Look, there you go.
• 7:01
SPEAKER_05: Tilt it down just a little tilt it down.
• 7:03
SPEAKER_05: No, no, tilt it down forward.
• 7:04
SPEAKER_05: Yeah, the helmet's as big as he is.
• 7:09
SPEAKER_05: It's bigger than he is.
• 7:10
  SPEAKER_05: Yeah, exactly.
• 7:11
  SPEAKER_05: That's a cool picture.
• 7:12
  SPEAKER_05: Yeah, it is.
• 7:13
SPEAKER_05: So, where are you in school at 15?
• 7:16
  SPEAKER_05: You in middle school?
• 7:17
SPEAKER_00: No, I just went to high school, so it's it's a pretty different type of experience.
• 7:23
SPEAKER_00: I'm I'm all homeschooled, so that's the only fun part, I guess, about the school right now.
• 7:28
SPEAKER_05: So So and so it gives them an advantage.
• 7:33
SPEAKER_05: Is there a grade level that you are?
• 7:36
  SPEAKER_05: I'm ninth grade.
• 7:37
  SPEAKER_03: Ninth grade, okay.
• 7:38
  SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
• 7:39
SPEAKER_03: So you would be entering high school, you know, here locally.
• 7:42
  SPEAKER_04: Yeah, nevertheless, yeah.
• 7:43
  SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
• 7:43
SPEAKER_03: But to me, I I can see some advantages to that in your profession because it gives you a little more flexibility, but you never get away from it.
• 7:50
SPEAKER_03: Because if you go to France to race, then your teacher come with you?
• 7:55
SPEAKER_00: Uh I have an online teacher, so Oh.
• 7:57
  SPEAKER_03: It's not your parents.
• 7:58
SPEAKER_03: I thought your parents were might be doing it, and I thought you'd never get away from school.
• 8:03
  SPEAKER_00: No, no.
• 8:04
SPEAKER_00: Is I have an online teacher, but she kind of travels everywhere with me.
• 8:06
SPEAKER_00: You know, my I bring my computer so she can uh experience the the where you're at.
• 8:13
SPEAKER_05: The thrill of victory and the agony of defeat.
• 8:16
  SPEAKER_00: Exactly.
• 8:17
  SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
• 8:18
SPEAKER_05: Um, so you're based out there in California, and um how often do you travel?
• 8:23
SPEAKER_05: Every weekend during racing season?
• 8:26
  SPEAKER_00: During racing season.
• 8:27
SPEAKER_00: Well, really, racing season never ends.
• 8:30
SPEAKER_00: So we're always traveling all all year.
• 8:32
  SPEAKER_00: So we're testing, yeah.
• 8:34
  SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
• 8:34
SPEAKER_00: So like next week I might be testing a car, and then the week after that I'm racing a go-kart.
• 8:41
SPEAKER_00: So it's every everything is we're all out all the time.
• 8:44
SPEAKER_00: So either if we're in France or we're in Texas, or back at home racing.
• 8:50
  SPEAKER_04: So Wow.
• 8:51
  SPEAKER_04: So you're doing the F4 series.
• 8:53
SPEAKER_04: You're going to get in the F4 series.
• 8:55
SPEAKER_00: Yes, we're trying to get in the F French F4 series, so we'll see.
• 8:59
SPEAKER_00: We'll hear about that in the next couple weeks.
• 9:01
SPEAKER_05: Alright, well, explain that to me because I I'm not familiar with it.
• 9:05
SPEAKER_05: Cars or is it carts?
• 9:09
SPEAKER_00: French F4 is just moving into the opening of cars.
• 9:16
SPEAKER_00: So it's like the entry level to the road of Formula One.
• 9:20
  SPEAKER_00: So you have F4, then F3, then F2, then F1.
• 9:24
SPEAKER_00: So it's kind of the open level, and every kind of every country has it.
• 9:30
SPEAKER_00: So you have Italian F4, French, European, so you have a lot of different kind of series that that you can run, but any series you want to run, you always want to win in.
• 9:41
SPEAKER_04: Now you say the different series are the cars the same and all the now.
• 9:44
SPEAKER_04: Obviously, the French F4, is it a different car than the uh European F4 versus German F4?
• 9:52
SPEAKER_04: I mean, are is the car the same, but it's just different location locations?
• 9:58
SPEAKER_00: So how it works is there's one company that makes all the cars, which is Alcatus.
• 10:04
SPEAKER_00: And some of them are kind of different, where it's either it's French F4, let's say it's made by it's made by the same company but have different parts on them.
• 10:16
SPEAKER_00: So it's kind of regulated towards the series.
• 10:20
SPEAKER_00: French F4 is an academy, so they don't let a lot of drivers into it.
• 10:25
SPEAKER_00: So it's more of a like a regulated base where it's all stock and they don't change anything.
• 10:30
SPEAKER_00: And then some series where they have what what I call an open setup, so the driver can change things on the car to where he what he feels.
• 10:39
SPEAKER_05: You ever been to an F1 race?
• 10:42
SPEAKER_00: No, I have not, and I've been trying to go for a long time now.
• 10:45
SPEAKER_04: Yeah, we just had one here at Coda.
• 10:47
SPEAKER_04: Circuit of the America was just here a few weeks ago.
• 10:49
SPEAKER_05: Yeah, and if you ever get an opportunity to visit Texas, you must, you must go to Circuit of the Americas.
• 10:57
SPEAKER_05: Um, I have uh just a regular plane Corvette, and I went to a Corvette event one time where we got to ride, actually drive our car Corvettes on the road course.
• 11:08
  SPEAKER_05: It is truly phenomenal.
• 11:10
SPEAKER_05: With elevation changes, all of the turns, you'll have to look it up and you'll go, wow, yeah, I definitely want to race this.
• 11:17
SPEAKER_04: Let me ask you this you're one of six drivers that was selected from uh a whole bunch of folks, like 62 or 65, 65 drivers.
• 11:25
SPEAKER_04: You you're you're one of six selected.
• 11:27
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I was one of the six selected to to run it and run up front, which is kind of very, very cool to be up front and to be the only American to ever get third or actually ever get into the finals of feed racing.
• 11:44
SPEAKER_00: So that's a it's a pretty cool thing that I've been able to accomplish.
• 11:48
SPEAKER_00: And I just I'm so grateful that I could uh be a part of that legacy.
• 11:54
  SPEAKER_04: That's awesome.
• 11:55
SPEAKER_04: What's your driving style like?
• 11:56
SPEAKER_04: Are you uh are you did do you do you push the limits, you put them in the fence, uh rubbin's racing?
• 12:00
SPEAKER_04: How do you do that?
• 12:02
SPEAKER_00: Uh I'm more of a rubbin's racing kind of guy.
• 12:04
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that there you go.
• 12:06
  SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
• 12:07
  SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
• 12:07
  SPEAKER_00: Use the whole track.
• 12:09
  SPEAKER_00: Yes, exactly.
• 12:10
  SPEAKER_05: How tall are you?
• 12:11
SPEAKER_05: How much do you weigh?
• 12:12
  SPEAKER_00: I'm about six foot and I weigh 170.
• 12:16
  SPEAKER_04: What's your girlfriend's name?
• 12:18
  SPEAKER_00: I don't got one.
• 12:19
  SPEAKER_00: Oh.
• 12:20
  SPEAKER_00: Don't got time.
• 12:21
SPEAKER_05: You don't have time for one yet.
• 12:24
SPEAKER_05: Yeah, because they'll all come running up to you going, hi.
• 12:29
SPEAKER_05: Go after the babes on the podium.
• 12:30
  SPEAKER_05: That's what you want.
• 12:31
SPEAKER_05: That's the one that you want.
• 12:33
  SPEAKER_05: Mike knows.
• 12:33
  SPEAKER_05: Yeah, Mike knows.
• 12:34
  SPEAKER_05: Mike doesn't know.
• 12:36
SPEAKER_05: No, Mike, Mike, Mike watched a lot.
• 12:38
  SPEAKER_05: He watched a lot.
• 12:39
  SPEAKER_05: That's that's what it was.
• 12:40
  SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
• 12:41
  SPEAKER_05: Uh all right.
• 12:42
SPEAKER_05: So what did you say that your next event is gonna is it gonna be there in California?
• 12:47
SPEAKER_00: No, my next event is gonna be in Nevada in Las Vegas.
• 12:51
SPEAKER_00: So it's called Super NATS, and it's the biggest, one of the biggest car races in the world.
• 12:56
SPEAKER_00: So it's it's a big race, and there's a lot of drivers either from Europe or all over the world come and race.
• 13:04
SPEAKER_05: Now, is is it a is it a track built for go-karts?
• 13:08
  SPEAKER_00: No, it's actually a parking lot.
• 13:10
  SPEAKER_05: Oh, okay.
• 13:11
  SPEAKER_05: Seriously.
• 13:12
  SPEAKER_05: Big parking lot.
• 13:13
  SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
• 13:13
  SPEAKER_00: Yep.
• 13:15
SPEAKER_05: I know that there is a facility out in Perump, Nevada, that uh I had the opportunity to go to out there uh for uh it was uh alpha, it was an alpha event, and they took all these alphas out there and um had it was a great time, but that track was as flat as a board, and you had to really perfect your driving skills with this car.
• 13:39
SPEAKER_05: It was a souped up alpha, but it wasn't really about all of that, it was about driving skills and how you get around the corners.
• 13:47
SPEAKER_05: And I I know that from watching go-karting, I I you know did the rental thing for a number of years before my back went out, but um I know that doing that, it's all about entering turns, getting out of turns, and then you put in a bunch of other carts next to you and all around you, even if you're at the lead, you wind up getting to the back end of the front pack.
• 14:16
SPEAKER_05: And uh it's it's driving skills and it's also how you handle the cart itself, and obviously you're very good at it.
• 14:25
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's it's crazy how you can have 60 to 70 drivers on one track, and we're all battling for the same thing, and most of the time we're either one tenth off of each other in the top 30, and then two tenths off of each other in the top 70.
• 14:41
  SPEAKER_04: One tenth.
• 14:43
SPEAKER_04: Let me ask you that are all the drivers that when you rate are they all the same age or within you know a few years of you, or are there older folks that are are driving as well?
• 14:51
SPEAKER_00: There's a couple my age, and then there's a couple in their twenties, and and so it it ranges.
• 14:58
  SPEAKER_00: Gotcha.
• 14:58
  SPEAKER_00: For me, I'm a little young.
• 15:01
SPEAKER_00: I've 15, which you should probably enter that class at probably 16.
• 15:06
SPEAKER_00: So I'm I'm a little young for this class, but it's because I'm a little taller than everyone else.
• 15:11
SPEAKER_00: So it's a kind of kind of works out.
• 15:14
SPEAKER_05: You're one of those ringers on the baseball team.
• 15:17
  SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
• 15:17
  SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
• 15:18
SPEAKER_05: Oh, look at it, look at little Johnny over there.
• 15:20
SPEAKER_05: Oh, he's only five foot five, and here comes here comes truly six foot tall and smacks that ball all the way out of the parking lot out there out center field.
• 15:31
  SPEAKER_04: That's good.
• 15:32
SPEAKER_03: So obviously all these guys are about the same uh caliber as you since y'all all pack up that tight.
• 15:38
SPEAKER_03: I mean, that's gotta be kind of uh even a little more pressure on you, knowing these guys were good too.
• 15:44
SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's it's crazy how all these guys have been racing since they've been kids, and we all kind of grow up to become the best we can be.
• 15:54
SPEAKER_00: And all all of these drivers I have tons of respect for because it's it's hard to do what they do at at such a high level, and at this point in this carding career that I've had, it's it's been really cool.
• 16:10
SPEAKER_00: I've made a lot of cool relationships, and all these guys are just much better than you.
• 16:16
SPEAKER_00: You'd think if they went into a car and they didn't have enough money to to be on a top team, I still think they could go win races.
• 16:23
  SPEAKER_05: Very good.
• 16:24
  SPEAKER_05: Very good.
• 16:25
SPEAKER_05: Well, uh so Go ahead, Mike.
• 16:27
SPEAKER_03: Yeah, so so you're basically in in a a feeder system up to get up to F1.
• 16:31
SPEAKER_03: Have you looked at NASCAR or anything else, or are you just really focused on that?
• 16:35
  SPEAKER_03: On the open wheel?
• 16:37
  SPEAKER_00: I've done I've driven a a legend car, I've done oval stuff.
• 16:41
SPEAKER_00: I'm not great at oval.
• 16:42
SPEAKER_00: I do not turn like turning left and and turn right at the same time, so that's not really my thing.
• 16:49
SPEAKER_00: Uh it's not that I wouldn't try it, it's more of a I'm not that great in it.
• 16:55
  SPEAKER_00: And I like great.
• 16:56
SPEAKER_05: But you haven't had a lot of experience in it either.
• 16:58
SPEAKER_05: I was don't imagine that, you know.
• 17:01
SPEAKER_05: Listen, if you're a race car driver, you're ready to race and drive anything in my book, anyway.
• 17:06
SPEAKER_04: Yeah, and if and if if you see something in your career down the line, you could be you could be a a team principal, you could, you know, get into the engineering aspect.
• 17:14
SPEAKER_04: So they you your doors are wide open.
• 17:16
  SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I'm I'm I'm into doing anything.
• 17:20
SPEAKER_00: Anything I can win in, I say.
• 17:21
SPEAKER_05: So yeah, you've got it's the same kind of thing when you get into pro sports of any kind, there is a certain drive that to be competitive in whatever it is that you choose, you've got to be very good, very focused, and you gotta have a little attitude.
• 17:40
SPEAKER_05: And we know we're athletic.
• 17:41

SPEAKER_04: Uh, but you can watch tomorrow, so it's out of three o'clock in NBC.

• 23:09
  SPEAKER_04: So there you go.
• 23:10
SPEAKER_05: Uh it's always a big deal because it's Halloween weekend, and then uh the SEMA show opens tomorrow.
• 23:18
SPEAKER_04: Years ago, when the Houston Houston race was going on, the next race after was Vegas.
• 23:24
SPEAKER_04: And uh I was flying out with ATD, we're going to an event, and of course the race had ended with this Monday travels, and uh Bernstein was in the same uh loading area of the plane and in the same area there, and they were throwing dice in the corner of the airport, him and his crew.
• 23:41
SPEAKER_04: And I was talking to him and I said, How much to get in the game?
• 23:43
SPEAKER_04: He goes, It's not what you get in, it's how you get out.
• 23:47
  SPEAKER_04: That's it.
• 23:47
  SPEAKER_04: Yep.
• 23:48
  SPEAKER_04: Um racing.
• 23:50
  SPEAKER_04: Awesome people.
• 23:51
SPEAKER_04: Uh November 28th is the opening for the Iditarod, Mike, in case you're interested.
• 23:55
  SPEAKER_04: I got it noted.
• 23:58
SPEAKER_05: Dash hound races are coming up and everything.
• 24:00
  SPEAKER_05: Absolutely.
• 24:00
SPEAKER_05: Well, we need we don't want to miss those dash hound races.
• 24:05
SPEAKER_05: Uh speaking of which, time now for Mr.
• 24:07
SPEAKER_05: Mars this week in auto history.
• 24:09
SPEAKER_03: You got it queued up there, Mike?
• 24:11
  SPEAKER_03: Yes, sir.
• 24:12
SPEAKER_03: Got a few things that we found that we thought were pretty interesting this week in auto history.
• 24:16
  SPEAKER_01: All right.
• 24:17
SPEAKER_03: Uh, starting with this week in 1909, General Motors acquired the Carter Car Company.
• 24:23
SPEAKER_03: Now, what's significant about this, um, they were in Michigan, and but they were experimenting with the friction drive transmission.
• 24:31
SPEAKER_03: So they took and replaced the gears with a variable friction disk drive for smooth gearless operation.
• 24:37
SPEAKER_03: Know what that sounds like, eh?
• 24:38
SPEAKER_03: So they marketed it as a car of a thousand speeds, which is basically a precursor to the CVTs.
• 24:44
SPEAKER_03: So William Durant with GM bought it up, going to use it, and wanted access to all the patents.
• 24:49
SPEAKER_03: And but then by 1915 the car was gone and GM kept all the patents on it.
• 24:55
SPEAKER_03: Moving on into 1954, the last real Hudson automobile rolled off this image line.
• 25:02
SPEAKER_03: Now it had been a symbol of innovation and performance, and and it had it step down, what they call their step-down design in 1948 because it lowered the car, uh, made it easier to get in and out for one thing, but it also improved the um center of gravity for improved handling.
• 25:17
SPEAKER_03: So they became uh excellent in NASCAR during the 1950s until they merged with Nash Calvinator in 1954 to take uh their washing.
• 25:27
  SPEAKER_04: They did.
• 25:28
SPEAKER_03: And uh they be that but that's how they got to become the American Motors Corporation.
• 25:32
SPEAKER_03: So that's where it came from, from Hudson.
• 25:34
SPEAKER_03: Looks like a lead sled almost that the roof is.
• 25:37
  SPEAKER_03: Almost.
• 25:37
  SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah.
• 25:38
  SPEAKER_04: And yeah.
• 25:40
  SPEAKER_03: Then uh 1957.
• 25:43
  SPEAKER_05: I don't know.
• 25:44
  SPEAKER_05: Do what?
• 25:46
  SPEAKER_05: Never mind.
• 25:47
  SPEAKER_03: Okay.
• 25:48
SPEAKER_03: So 1957 the Chevrolet Impala was introduced as the top trim of the Bel Air.
• 25:53
SPEAKER_03: I did not realize that it was a a a trim level when it first came out with this the tail fins and all the chrome and everything.
• 26:01
SPEAKER_03: And it had the optional 283 that you could get in it for the V8, and it became a model of its own, and uh all kinds of Impala's grew up until I had one in 1965 even that I really loved and wish I still had, but uh didn't work out.
• 26:16
SPEAKER_05: Holler and a shot collar.
• 26:18
SPEAKER_03: I'm telling you, I was holler too, up and down the drag.
• 26:23
SPEAKER_03: So then in 1970, the Toyota Silica made its debut at the 17th Tokyo Motor Show Motor Show.
• 26:30
SPEAKER_03: Now, this was definitely targeting younger buyers, and I remember when it came out, everybody was, oh, here's a little Corolla hot rod, is what it amounted to, because it had rear-wheel drive, a 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine, and it was basically trying to tap into the pony car market at the time.
• 26:46
SPEAKER_03: And it gave Toyota their performance reputation, and uh it was a really big success for them over the years.
• 26:53
SPEAKER_03: In fact, when they quit making it, then they brought it back here a few years ago.
• 26:58
SPEAKER_03: Then in 1982, it's very significant because the Honda Manufacturing Honda Motor Company became the Honda of America manufacturing with a plant in Marysville, Ohio.
• 27:09
SPEAKER_03: They started building the Honda Cord inside the United States.
• 27:12
SPEAKER_03: Now, this is the first step in the Japanese automakers actually becoming part of the U.S.
• 27:18
  SPEAKER_03: automotive industry.
• 27:20
SPEAKER_03: I mean, they were importing before, but now they're actually building cars here.
• 27:24
SPEAKER_03: And uh, of course, their deal was uh, you know, efficiency, quality, and you know, Honda in particular was known for being a very reliable vehicle.
• 27:32
SPEAKER_03: And uh so that was just a few things that we saw this week in automotive history.
• 27:37
  SPEAKER_03: Perfect.
• 27:37
SPEAKER_05: All right, well, thank you very much.
• 27:38
SPEAKER_05: GM slashing production at its electric vehicle plant in Detroit, affecting more than 3,000 jobs there, and at two joint venture battery plants in response to a slowdown in EV demand.
• 27:49
SPEAKER_05: GM dropping one of two daily shifts at Factory Zero, which makes the GMC Hummer EV and electric versions of the Chevy Silverado, GMC Sierra, Cadillac Escalade, according to a person familiar with all the inner workings of GM.
• 28:04
