Latest / Spoil Me! One Piece / One Piece MOVIE! Baron Omatsuri & The Secret Island
Transcript
- 0:02This is an Unspoiled Network podcast. This is spoil Me covering one of the
- 0:11one piece movies Baron Omatsuri and The Secret Island in this episode, kiddos,
- 0:21this was a pretty dark installment. Oh my god, I really really liked
- 0:27this movie, but I wasn't ready for like how serious we were going to
- 0:33be about it. Welcome to spoil Me, Welcome to the show everyone.
- 0:57I am Natasha. Thank you so much to me as for commissioning this episode.
- 1:02For those of you who are listening who maybe haven't seen this movie and
- 1:04you're wondering where I found it to watch, Max sent me a file to
- 1:11download, because you could just open it from the Google file, but it
- 1:17doesn't have subtitles. If you do that, it's just in Japanese. So
- 1:21in order for the subtitles to show up, you have to actually download it.
- 1:25I don't know why, but that's how it worked. And otherwise I
- 1:29could only find it like on DVD for like a hundred dollars. It was
- 1:34insane, but otherwise couldn't find it streaming literally anywhere. So if you're wanting
- 1:42to watch along and you've been looking for it and are kind of frustrated,
- 1:46sorry, about that. I will see if I can share this Google drive
- 1:52file in the discord. Actually, when i'm thinking of it, I'm just
- 1:55going to go ahead and do that now since I have Discord open, and
- 1:59any of you who are interested can go and check it out. But yeah,
- 2:05I was really really unprepared for the intensity of this movie, and I
- 2:12am like impressed. Honestly. It's not like just being more serious makes something
- 2:21better, which is a thing I think DC could learn from. Everybody seemed
- 2:25to go through this era for a while where they were like, let's make
- 2:29it all gray and angsty and gritty, and that will mean that we are
- 2:32serious, and frankly, that's horseshit and it's weak sauce and it's very immature.
- 2:39But this was just really really well done, and I didn't expect to
- 2:47enjoy it as much as I did. I'll be honest, I kind of
- 2:51expected it to be like a wild romp that was sort of off the wall,
- 2:55But I didn't think that I was going to be like so moved isn't
- 3:01quite the right word, although there were times when it was moving. It's
- 3:06more like I was disturbed by it in a way that one piece doesn't often
- 3:10get to me. You know, Florian says, as far as I know,
- 3:15this is considered the best op movie by lots of fans. Yeah,
- 3:20Max's email he said something like, it's very different. So let's say I'm
- 3:25gonna read what his email says. It's kind of a fifty fifty shot whether
- 3:30you will like the movie or hate it. Since it has story elements,
- 3:31I think you may enjoy. But on the other hand, it is pretty
- 3:36different from the One Piece you know and Love, to the point where most
- 3:38people consider it a good movie, but not a good one piece movie.
- 3:44If you aren't feeling it, given all the hoops you have to jump through
- 3:46to watch it, no worries. But if you do want to move forward
- 3:50with it, let me know and I'll drop the money in PayPal. This
- 3:53is when we were still talking about whether I would cover it, and Yeah,
- 3:58I think that this was a win for sure, Max. I really
- 4:00liked it, and I even though it is very different tonally than the One
- 4:05Piece I Know and Love, I still felt like the characters were familiar and
- 4:12I felt like it felt like a one piece movie. It was just like
- 4:15a really different energy mostly, but yeah, I just was really if the
- 4:21first thing that I want to ask, because I don't I didn't look up
- 4:26any information on this to start off with, you know, and I didn't
- 4:30have time before recording after watching it, but I'm wait, year did this
- 4:36come out? Because there is some wild animation stuff going on in this film,
- 4:42and it's not like I won't say it's bad. It's certainly not bad
- 4:48exactly. In some ways, I almost feel like the weirdness of the animation
- 4:54is what makes it feel so unnerving, because they have these like photo realistic
- 5:01backgrounds, or for example, like the goldfish when they get to that part,
- 5:06looks like it's made in CGI. You know, it's not animated the
- 5:13same way. It's not a line drawing the way everybody else is. And
- 5:17so you've got these moments that are they feel in some ways really beautiful,
- 5:25but there is like an uncanny valley element to them that is almost like a
- 5:31signal to you as a viewer that shit ain't right, you know. And
- 5:35I don't know if that is intentionally what they were trying to do or if
- 5:41that's just a side effect of the animation improving over time. And now we
- 5:46look at this stuff and we're kind of like, yeah, this is fucking
- 5:47creepy, But either way, it works really well to me to make me
- 5:54feel like something's not great in this place. And I don't know what it
- 5:59is is because it's like clearly meant to be beautiful, and in a way
- 6:02it sort of is, but there's just a part, like an edge to
- 6:06it that I'm like, m No, I don't think so. So we
- 6:13start this off with everybody looking at this brochure for a an island that has
- 6:20this like reputation. It's called Omatsuri, which I think it's Robin who says
- 6:30something, or maybe it's a it's Nami. But Zoro asks why do they
- 6:38call it Omatsuri island? And he asks do they hold festivals or something?
- 6:44And then Robin says, the only pleasure island resort in the Grand Line,
- 6:48as its name implies, every day is a festival, So I'm guessing Omatsuri
- 6:54means festival, and it says you can enjoy spas and beauty salons, which
- 7:00gets Nami's attention. Your nightlife will be filled with beauties from around the world
- 7:05and a selection of like choice beverages, which makes Sanji turn around. And
- 7:11then dinner will be a full course of exquisite cuisine, which is what it
- 7:15Chopper's attention, which I actually kind of found surprising. I don't think that
- 7:20of Chopper as being somebody who's like super food oriented. I thought that that
- 7:26would have also appealed to Sangi and if not, then definitely Lufy. But
- 7:31Lufy doesn't chime in here. Initially they have to like ask him what he
- 7:35thinks about it. Usup is the one who sees it as a trap immediately
- 7:41is like, this isn't this is not what it looks like. And I
- 7:45was like kind of amazed in retrospect that he had the foresight to see this,
- 7:51because who Stop is a lot of times the one who's the most credulous
- 7:56out of everybody, you know, He's he and Chopper are the ones that
- 8:00tend to be pretty gullible, and I would have thought that this would really
- 8:05speak to him and win him over. But there isn't like a particular element
- 8:09mentioned here that I guess would really get his attention. He's not particularly girl
- 8:16crazy, he doesn't seem to care that much about food or drinking, so
- 8:22really what we've seen that he's into is like gadgets and stuff, and that's
- 8:24not really a resort thing. So this is when they ask, like,
- 8:31Lufy, what do you think, and he asks not me, to read
- 8:35the first part again, which says, if you are a pirate among pirates,
- 8:39among pirates among pirates, gather your steadfast crew of nakama and set sail
- 8:46for our island. And Nakama is a word that is just the central theme
- 8:56of this episode, I say, episode of this movie, and I had
- 9:01never heard it before. I don't remember if it's used a lot in the
- 9:05actual show, because I don't like the subtitles here. You know, they
- 9:11use the word in Japanese. In the dub I think they'd probably have translated
- 9:16the word. But that said, it means friend or colleague or comrade,
- 9:24you know, just somebody that is your your pal, you know, and
- 9:31that could be on a professional level, or it could be on a personal
- 9:33level, or it could be both, and it's super super meaningful. So
- 9:39that's what gets Lufy to be like, yeah, let's go instead of the
- 9:43food thing, which does like make sense in a character way, but I
- 9:50also really wanted him to get psyched up about the food, and he doesn't
- 9:54really mention it. Although there is a food centric challenge later, which he's
- 9:58really really into, and we get this cool like there's a the opening credits
- 10:07and the ship. We are seeing it from high, high above, as
- 10:11if on a map or as if you're in an airplane, really, because
- 10:16when you're in an airplane you can see like weird details, but it's still
- 10:20high up and you're watching. You can see like these islands with the reefs
- 10:24around them, and the ship moving with the wake, and it's this white
- 10:28streak. And at one point there's like a close up of the ship in
- 10:35this clear water, and as they're pulling up, there's all sorts of people
- 10:39like enjoying the water, hanging out in hammocks. It looks incredibly alluring.
- 10:50There's just a whole energy to it that feels like a vacation spot. And
- 10:56I'm thinking that's where we're heading, but they pass by that area that's not
- 11:03the island that they stop at. So I got myself like in a oh
- 11:09sweet, it is a resort kind of mindset, and then it turns out
- 11:13that's not even like the spot where they're heading. And there's also a really
- 11:18cool moment of like a cloud far away that's pouring rain and all of these
- 11:24rainbows that pop up, just like little moments of atmosphere like that that I
- 11:30thought were really really effective. And even as they're coming up on the island,
- 11:35the camera so to speak, is really low, and so the waves
- 11:39are sort of obscuring the island a little bit as it's like, and I
- 11:43don't know, I just really loved the way all of this was animated,
- 11:48and I felt like, I wish this show did a little bit more of
- 11:52this, because I sometimes feel as if I lose the sense of place the
- 12:00show, and a lot of it is We're on the ship and sure there's
- 12:07water around, but you don't really see them passing other islands. We see
- 12:09them arriving places, and that's you don't like get the feeling of travel the
- 12:18same way, if you get what I'm saying. There was something about this
- 12:22that I felt as if I had sailed there with them, and I don't
- 12:26know, I just found it to be like kind of refreshing and made me
- 12:31long for a bit more of this in the show. And it's funny again,
- 12:37with the way that the show will stretch some things out more than it
- 12:41should, I feel like they could do this. They could add these moments
- 12:46in and it would be a really great way to fill time and not have
- 12:50to like draw other parts out unnecessarily, and it would be beautiful and it
- 12:56would set atmosphere really well. So they get to the island and apparently,
- 13:03like at first, they're looking around and it doesn't really seem particularly exciting,
- 13:07and us up is like, I don't get it. This doesn't seem like
- 13:13the place, but Nami is one hundred percent sure. She's like, come
- 13:16on, have I ever made that kind of mistake before? I've always been
- 13:20right. So and this is when we get one of our first shots that
- 13:26I was like, what is happening here? Because everybody is standing on the
- 13:30beach and they are in there, you know, their animation style with this
- 13:33very cartoony look. But in the background is this jungle that looks like it's
- 13:39from a video game, you know, And I was just like, what
- 13:43is happening? This is the first real inkling you get of how different the
- 13:48animation is going to be in I was going to say in the background,
- 13:52but like I said, that Goldfish also had this weird animation style and that
- 13:56is not a background thing. So anyway, at this point, they hear
- 14:03something lufy says. This way, they make their way through the jungle,
- 14:09which we kind of go back to the regular animation style for this sequence and
- 14:11see all of these beautiful places. It's really really cool, honestly like it
- 14:18looks really good. And then we get we break out into the open,
- 14:24and this really should have been the part where everybody got suspicious because if you're
- 14:31if you are a resort island, you are not going to make it difficult
- 14:33to find the place you're heading. This isn't how it would work, but
- 14:43oh, Florian says, it's a big part of the series. Yeah,
- 14:45And Nakam is a soulmate, just not in a romantic way. There's no
- 14:48real translation. I love that it didn't say that. When I looked up
- 14:54what it meant, it didn't like. But I really really like that version
- 14:58a platonic soulmate. That's the fact that there's like no real translation. Is
- 15:05that so telling or what? Like? So many is not an inherently romantic
- 15:11word. It We see it that way when we use it, because that's
- 15:18the only way Americans at least tend to really use it. I'm gonna say
- 15:24Westerners in general. But it's not inherently romantic. We just don't see the
- 15:30value of friendships the same way we see the value of romances, and it's
- 15:33it's a shame anyway. So this is when they break out into the open,
- 15:39and you see this place that looks like a cross between someplace in like
- 15:50Prague, the taj Mahal and a carnival. This place is wild looking,
- 16:00like the whole vibe of it is overwhelmed, and that's really what you get.
- 16:07Everybody's like looking around at these different areas and seeing where they think the
- 16:15spot that holds their particular interest is going to be, and they are very,
- 16:22very into it. But again there's no people. So I'm like,
- 16:27what is this. You've got this amazing city, but I don't see a
- 16:30single other human being. And then all of these people come out and like
- 16:37they're in these dance outfits and they hold their leg out and it's a very
- 16:42sort of like what are they the Roquettes from New York? Have you've ever
- 16:49gone to see them? It's a good time. It's like very splashy spectacle,
- 16:56you know. But they all have fans of their face and when they
- 17:00pull their fans back, even though they're in dresses, it's definitely dudes,
- 17:06and they are they have these weird like plant extensions growing up out of the
- 17:14top of their heads, and I immediately was like, okay, these are
- 17:18pod people. Like something's really really not okay here, But nobody seems as
- 17:23worried about this as they should. So then we hear the cry of elephants.
- 17:30There are trunks, and this elephant comes out with this dude who is
- 17:36wearing an outfit the likes of which I mean, first of all, his
- 17:41hair. It's kind of beautifully done, because the hair that's coming up off
- 17:45the top of his head is very reminiscent of the plant thing that everybody else
- 17:48has got going on. But for him, there is an actual flower growing
- 17:55out of his shoulder. It's a different energy, and it's got a face.
- 17:59It's not a simple plant. So it's a whole different situation with him
- 18:03clearly, and he greets them as courageous pirates. I congratulate you on reaching
- 18:11Omassouri Island. My name is Baron Ohmatsouri. I am your host. And
- 18:18everybody gets very excited thinking that he is going to offer them some of the
- 18:25comforts and recreation that they've been looking for. You may enjoy yourselves to your
- 18:30heart's content, but before you do, you must long pause undertake the Ordeal
- 18:41of Hell. Now, I just want to take a moment here. You
- 18:45guys know that, like, I never really warmed up to Robin that much,
- 18:51but she's wearing this vacation outfit in this movie that is just flawless.
- 18:59It's this like white ensemble, a sort of nineteen forties look, with this
- 19:10wide brimmed hat. I mean, it is so good. So every time
- 19:17we would go over to her, I was just like, oh my god,
- 19:18Robin, sir, it is just excellent. And later on Zoro changes
- 19:26into an outfit that I was like, all right, Zoro shit, because
- 19:30he looks fine as hell. So Nami says, the note that we found
- 19:38said something about spas and beauty salons, and they, you know, all
- 19:41talk about the things that they were looking for, and this baron is acting
- 19:47like he has never heard of any of the things they're talking about, like
- 19:49it's a complete mystery. So instantly us up, Nami and Sanji are all
- 19:56like, okay, we're leaving, And of course Lufy is like, I
- 20:03don't know, this Ordeal of Hell sounds pretty cool, and I just,
- 20:11of course I'm kind of relieved at how much Lufy takes it to heart that
- 20:18this ship was his fault later, because, like it is, it was
- 20:22everybody's decision to come here at all. So I don't want to lay the
- 20:26blame solely at his door. I'm not sure that by the time they got
- 20:30here, if they decided to turn around and leave, that they would have
- 20:32been allowed to turn around and leave. You know, I'll be honest.
- 20:37As much as I want to blame him solely for keeping them here, maybe
- 20:41it was already too late. But he really does have to like push this
- 20:47shit here. So this dude says countless many have failed to endure the task,
- 20:55and it says in the translation fled barefoot from this island, which I
- 20:57thought was a really weird way of saying this. I don't know what barefoot
- 21:02is meant to signify. If it's just supposed to be like they literally like
- 21:07left everything behind to flee. It feels evocative, even though I don't really
- 21:14get it. And Nami is the one who yells at him, and it's
- 21:17just like, what would we gain from accepting this? We don't have to
- 21:21do it, and Lufy is like, yeah, I know, we don't
- 21:23have to, but I want to try it, and I trust that all
- 21:26of you guys will be able to handle yourselves. I believe that you guys
- 21:30can do it. And everybody is sort of won over by that, and
- 21:34of course Zoro himself is like, honestly, I'm kind of interested, and
- 21:41Robin also chimes in and it's like, yeah, you know what, let's
- 21:45do it. Oh. I forgot to mention that Robin, she's got like
- 21:49her outfit also comes with a piece of luggage sitting by her, Like she
- 21:52just looks like she has landed in Cuba in like, you know, nineteen
- 22:00fifty one and is going to be going to a very luxurious resort to meet
- 22:07her boy toy. So as he says prepare the Ordeal of Hell, the
- 22:15whole place begins to move around, and literally, like the ground shifts underneath
- 22:22them, and it is banana pants crazy. I feel that this in particular
- 22:30should have been also more of a warning, but they are in too deep
- 22:37at this point. So the first thing that they have to do is goldfish
- 22:45catching, and there is a there is a pool that rises up between them
- 22:52that has regular goldfish in it, and everything turns into stands. So all
- 22:59of the people that been standing around or like now audience members of this arena,
- 23:04and the baron says, the team that captures the largest goldfish in three
- 23:08minutes wins, and they understandably are like, no problem, this is super
- 23:18easy, and he gives them a sort of net to catch it with,
- 23:25but it dissolves in water, so they would have to do it like really
- 23:29really quickly, and he says, now I'm going to present my opponent,
- 23:34and this dude, who I really enjoy the whole vibie brings to things.
- 23:45This dude comes running forward in shorts that look like they belong in nineteen ninety
- 23:52eight, and he says that he is Mucigoro and he has his own little
- 23:59scoop as well. So everybody is like, let's do this, no problem.
- 24:04He looks like an idiot. I Am not concerned, and they're like,
- 24:11all right, so which one of you wants to go first? And
- 24:15I love this, guys. This is when Sanji not Sanji Usup, is
- 24:21like, don't worry, guys, I've got this handled, and he tells
- 24:29Luchigo, you're going to regret being my opponent. You'll be facing the man
- 24:33known as the Master of goldfish catching me, and this dude totally falls for
- 24:41it. Us Up is like, yes, really, I am not to
- 24:44be trifled with, and this guy says please, saying you're lying, and
- 24:48then Usup just says, I'm lying. I have to mention as well.
- 24:52Of course, Chopper fucking is holly believing this bullshit because he is a precious
- 24:57angel. So the baron says we shall now begin, and as Usap is
- 25:07diving forward to get his goldfish, he hears something and he turns around to
- 25:15see this massive goldfish, saying it's the size of a whale. I'm not
- 25:21even sure that's accurate. Maybe like a sperm whale, one of the bigger
- 25:26guys, you know, a blue whale. But this is the first thing
- 25:32that's like living animated in that weird way, and so it really makes a
- 25:38sort of uncanny Valley effect for a creature that is supposed to be really creepy,
- 25:42and it works excellently. And of course Lufy, for his part,
- 25:52is just like, oh, this is amazing. We are one percent catching
- 25:56this fish, no problem, and so we basically have our usual all of
- 26:03our friends work together to take this fish down kind of thing like everybody does.
- 26:08Chimes in with their bit, and by chimes in with their bit,
- 26:12I mean Usap hands over the little catcher to Nami and runs away. So
- 26:19Nami watches this fish coming for her. Truly, the fucking animation of this
- 26:26is so scary, and Sanji jumps in and kicks it away. It has
- 26:32like golden armor looking on its body. It's got a very like Fanos sort
- 26:37of vibe because of the gemstones embedded in it. But yeah, so Sanji
- 26:44kicks it aside. She hands the thing to Zoro, who jumps in the
- 26:48air. He begins to draw his katana and he's told as he does this
- 26:52that katanas are not allowed, so he has to use the sheath instead and
- 27:00bashes the fish off to the side, which I did feel kind of bad
- 27:03for this fish. And then as it's falling, Lufy says, all right,
- 27:11I'm gonna use the net, and this is the first time he's showing
- 27:15off his devil fruit power. He hits the fish with the net and it
- 27:22goes flying again. This fish at this point has been airborne for what feels
- 27:26like a full five minutes. And then the baron says, Mucigaro, you
- 27:34have to show them and he gets this giant ass paddle out of a backpack,
- 27:42I guess. And when everybody's like, how come he gets that one,
- 27:48the baron is like, well, nobody said you had to use the
- 27:49one that I gave you. I only said that paper dissolves easily in water.
- 27:56And they'll realize that he basically like fuck and tricked them, which is
- 28:03cowardly and shitty. So he's trying to lure the fish over to him and
- 28:10it gets caught in his weird net and he is like chucking it toward the
- 28:17bucket. This whole thing is really something to watch, you guys. I
- 28:25love it's floating in the air as everybody is cheering. And this is when
- 28:29Robin says, oh, so there were never any rules to begin with.
- 28:33Then it's fine, and she makes her arms come out of the bucket.
- 28:41They all link together to create a net and they chuck the fish out of
- 28:47the bucket, and who should be standing right under the fish saying he can
- 28:53handle this, but Chopper, you guys, I don't know what he's thinking.
- 28:59He eats a rumble ball. He inflates in a way that I don't
- 29:03think we've ever seen him do before, and the fish basically like bounces off
- 29:08him into the bucket, so they technically win this one. And the fucking
- 29:17creepy flower sitting on the baron's shoulder had been calling the time, and they
- 29:25says game over, game over. The straw hats win, and I was
- 29:30just like, what is the deal with this weird flower? Because I at
- 29:34first thought it was like a little creature that he was friends with. But
- 29:41the baron never like turns to acknowledge it, and later on he does,
- 29:45he like kind of talks to it, but at first I was sort of
- 29:48like, I don't know what to make of this thing. At this point,
- 29:52Chopper falls into the water because he's dazed and confused from having been bashed
- 29:56by a fish. Lufy like a jerk off jumps in the water to save
- 30:00him, even though he himself cannot swim, and then Sanji jumps in to
- 30:06save both of them because he is a very good boy, and we see
- 30:11when they are underwater briefly all of these other ships that are busted up,
- 30:19sitting at the bottom of the ocean. It's unclear to me whether they saw
- 30:26all of the ships. I don't think they do. I think it's supposed
- 30:32to be just for our benefit that we know something is up here. But
- 30:37anyway, so this is when Lufy is like, all right, so we
- 30:41won, this is awesome. What's up with the next challenge? And I
- 30:51love when they're just like, I can't believe you called that the Ordeal of
- 30:53Hell. That was really nothing. So he says, well, it's not
- 31:00finished. There's another one. I won't allow this to go unpunished. And
- 31:06I loved that initially, that Muchigoro who is devastated that he failed. It
- 31:12seemed I was expecting the baron to be like, you piece of shit,
- 31:17I can't believe that you let me down. Instead, the baron is like,
- 31:21I can't believe you made my Muchigoro cry. And once you know what's
- 31:25going on, it makes a lot more sense. But at the moment,
- 31:29I was just kind of like, oh, he's like very protective. That's
- 31:32kind of cute and not what I thought it was going to be. Like
- 31:33I expected him to be a real hard ass. So this is when Lufy's
- 31:41like, yeah, another ordeal sounds dope, let's do it. And of
- 31:45course everybody is like, dude, come on, we weren't here to like
- 31:49play around. This was supposed to be arrest and he is not hearing it.
- 31:56Nami is like ready to kick the shit out of him. This is
- 32:01the first time that we see a little dude with the mustache. I can't
- 32:06remember his actual name, but we're just gonna call him Mustache, and he
- 32:09is observing things from the woods. He's got his little what do you call
- 32:15him binoculars that he's spying on them with. So guys, this is the
- 32:19part where they're going through the jungle. And before it was just cool line
- 32:24drawings. This looks like it was meant to be watched with three D glasses.
- 32:31It's got a very POV video games sort of animation to it, and
- 32:40it is awful. This like Uncanny Valley animation is fine for all of the
- 32:47other places it's been put This though, is the one spot where I was
- 32:52like, this is super distracting. What are we doing? It looks so
- 32:58bad? And I think, you know, if it were in if it's
- 33:00in the background and we've got our characters in the foreground, then fine,
- 33:04But when it's the focus of everything, not so good. Even if it's
- 33:09an odd like the fish, because it's meant to be scary, fine,
- 33:14But yeah, they're they're looking at the map and realizing that it really doesn't
- 33:19help all that much, and they find this spot where somebody had just been
- 33:24having a picnic off to the side in the middle of this jungle, which
- 33:28is we have almost the identical three D animation of them wandering around the jungle
- 33:36repeat itself because somebody, I guess, just loved it so much that they
- 33:39were like, yeah, we absolutely should just use this again. Easily the
- 33:45worst part of the movie. So this is when they arrive at a very
- 33:51weird stage, and I really enjoy this particular ordeal because it is it involves
- 34:00these old people who have such attitudes. They are great. So the point
- 34:05of this one is ring toss, and each team has two boats with two
- 34:12people aboard. The first team to ensnare all of their opponents in rings wins,
- 34:19and we have got every single one of these old people is in a
- 34:25kind of frog costume. They are adorable and not to be fucked with.
- 34:36I just really really enjoy these outfits. Guys. I would not mind dressing
- 34:39up as one of these for Helloween. Kiroko obviously like the pink frog.
- 34:45I mean, it's hard to go wrong. And they all comment on the
- 34:50fact that like Nami has lost her temper, to which she's like, yeah,
- 34:52it's my personality. I have a quick temper, Like what are you
- 34:55going to fight me about it? And I do sort of like her just
- 34:59being go like, hey, you know what, Yeah, I am fucking
- 35:02pissed. I have the right to be pissed. This is bullshit. And
- 35:07I was like, yeah, you know what, She's right. So we
- 35:14begin the next ordeal where we've got Zoro and Sangi on one boat because they
- 35:21really work so well together. Why would we not put the two of them
- 35:24on one of the boats? Such a bad choice? And then we've got
- 35:30Nami and oos Up on the other boat. I don't think that we see
- 35:36the decision of who goes on which boat. I was very surprised that we
- 35:40don't have involvement from Lufy where he wants to be on one of them,
- 35:46but apparently we're just going to skip over that part. It's fine. And
- 35:52notably, the island once again sort of like moves in such a way as
- 35:57to make these canals for them to go racing down, and so it's a
- 36:02really weird moment of seeing the like city just sort of appear before their eyes,
- 36:07and Namie is just like, what is happening here? So this is
- 36:14when they find out they have met their match in these old folks. Like
- 36:17they're very surprised that they're going up against old people to begin with, thinking
- 36:22that it's not going to be a big deal to beat them, and it
- 36:24turns out this is they have like regular boats, and the old people have
- 36:30boats that are like Bond Villain level, with like all kinds of contraptions and
- 36:37shit built in to cause them to sink or there's at one point they're obscuring
- 36:45vision by just like grilling food on the back of one of the boats and
- 36:51causing all of the smoke to fly into their eyes, which honestly was so
- 36:57great. It was like a combo of the fact that it's just a very
- 37:00practical way to make smoke. It's like, oh, yeah, we're also
- 37:04going to make lunch. But I love that. When we're with usap he
- 37:07says something about how, oh man, I'm kind of hungry now. It's
- 37:12a very good distracting weapon, just being like, oh, that smells really
- 37:15good. So this is when we go over to Lufy, who is in
- 37:23the hotel, and again it's just really weird to me that he's not participating
- 37:30in this ordeal. I just you know. But anyway, he's standing in
- 37:37the lobby and somebody keeps pelting him with rocks that increase in size as he
- 37:43continues to stand there, and eventually this dude who is about to bash him,
- 37:49he turns around and catches him. The guy's holding a rock the size
- 37:52of like a loaf of bread, and he has got that weird mustache.
- 37:58It's the dude that we saw spying on them from the jungle. So Lufi
- 38:00goes and chases after him. I'm going to wrap things up with the second
- 38:07door deal by just being like they win. I feel like that's adequate.
- 38:13Mostly we get the usual sort of fight in fighting between Zoro and Sanji.
- 38:20The dub has Sanji calling Zoro moss head, but in this it was translated
- 38:27as green tea head, which I am assuming is true to the television show
- 38:31as well. I don't remember that, but I did find it kind of
- 38:36funny the way that was changed. And yeah, there's this weird moment,
- 38:43and I don't recall exactly how he gets here because Chopper is just exploring the
- 38:50city and it's sort of jump cuts between different areas, and so it seems
- 38:55like he's just wandering around, but we never really see him walking, so
- 38:59it feels straightge. But he suddenly turns up in this absolutely massive graveyard and
- 39:09there are wreaths at every single grave, which he notes and says like something
- 39:16about flowers, which I thought was a weird thing to note, because plenty
- 39:22of people put flowers at graves and that doesn't really seem that unusual to me.
- 39:25I think it was supposed to be sort of hinting at what it turns
- 39:30out is happening here, but at the time I was just sort of like,
- 39:34why is that the weird part? Isn't it just like the sheer number
- 39:37of them that would throw you off. So he's staying there looking at this,
- 39:42and this shadows creeping up behind him, and it's this dude who is,
- 39:45as we find out, pretty much a coward, and he is attempting
- 39:52to save face in front of his kids and make it seem like he's actually
- 39:57a badass who is protecting them, when in fact, he's like barely holding
- 40:00it together. And it turns out the kids all kind of know this,
- 40:06but they keep it to themselves, and he thinks that Chopper is one of
- 40:14the Baron's minions, as he calls him, but when he realizes what the
- 40:20deal is actually, he's like, oh shit, well then maybe you could
- 40:23be on our side. We're pirates as well. Our family are pirates,
- 40:30but we aren't too well known. The kids behind me are my daughters and
- 40:35my son. And this is when we jumped to this weird this. There's
- 40:45there are so many like sub blots that happen in this. I'm trying to
- 40:51see where to go next with it, because this conversation with Chopper, he
- 40:54gets to know this guy and agrees that he is going to pretend that the
- 40:59dude like over houred him in order to help him save face. But the
- 41:06place we go next is Lufy at the hotel, chasing down this dude who
- 41:10wants Lufy to become his nakama and Nakama actually I'm realizing I don't remember how
- 41:20they pronounced it, but this dude tells Lufy to beware of the Baron because
- 41:25he separates Nakama, and that for me was like pretty clear. At one
- 41:32point, everybody's sort of wondering why is he setting up these contests to determine
- 41:39who is the strongest, and I felt like it seems pretty clear that he's
- 41:44wanting to sort out the toughest ones, but I'm not entirely sure now why
- 41:50it is. At the time, I was like, he wants to try
- 41:52and get the strongest players to be part of his own crew. But I
- 42:00think it's supposed to be that he's feeding the strongest people to the plant in
- 42:04order to get the plant stronger, like they do more than a regular person
- 42:12would. I'm not totally sure that that's how it works, but I think
- 42:19so. This is when we go, You guys, I love this so
- 42:23much. The next ordeal is this like cooking competition, and it is the
- 42:30best, y'all know. I love any time that we get to see we
- 42:35get to see Sanji doing his thing with food, because a lot of the
- 42:37times it's just him like in the background cooking, or it just is him
- 42:43showing up with a full plate of stuff, and here we get to actually
- 42:49see him making it. Right before this, we have that weird encounter with
- 42:53this kid who looks like a frog who wants us ups hat, and when
- 43:00Usa refuses to give it to him, this kid says he won't forgive him
- 43:04and gives him this like look and it's really freaky his eyes change color.
- 43:10But yeah, we go so the whole like the way that this cooking competition
- 43:15works. They are standing on a flat top griddle basically, and they each
- 43:23have like shoes on that makes it so they can kind of like skate around
- 43:27and they're making massive, massive amounts of food. And this one dude who
- 43:34is competing against Sanji makes these noodles, and Sanjie takes the noodles and rolls
- 43:40them into a ball and then like makes an omelet which he tosses into the
- 43:46air. The noodles land on the griddle, and then the egg pancake turns
- 43:52over and lands on it, and he puts a layer of sauce on it,
- 43:58like maybe a hoist and saw or I don't know, teryaki saus uh
- 44:02some mayonnaise, and then he tosses bonito flakes. And I love this line
- 44:08as the veil like bonito flakes dance in the air. My modon yaki is
- 44:15complete, modon yaki oko nomiyaki with yaki soba noodles. Yeah, I'm gonna
- 44:22go ahead and look up what modon yaki is right now, because that does
- 44:27not help me. I don't know what that means. Modon yaki means modern
- 44:32yaki. It's simply okaki yaiba noodles. Thank you, But I don't know
- 44:38what okaki is. Fucking fucking Google telling me the exact same shit he did.
- 44:45I don't know what that is. Um, So I'm looking up okaki
- 44:51now, a popular street food from Osaka. Okoyaki is a delicious Japanese savory
- 44:59pancake grilled as you like it with your choice of protein and tasty condiments and
- 45:04toppings. And there's a picture here with the bonita flakes on top. This
- 45:09looks really good, you guys. I think I'm just hungry, but no,
- 45:15for real, this looks really really good. This is making me want
- 45:20to like try some cooking. The thing is around here. I'm so.
- 45:23I got so used to shopping for ingredients in Philadelphia, where you could like
- 45:29get anything, and now I moved here, and like, if I want
- 45:32to find ingredients that are a little bit off the beaten track from a regular
- 45:37NORMI American palette, I have to drive like forty five minutes to an hour
- 45:43to a store that sells that stuff. And it's a pain in the ass.
- 45:47There was also another thing, because this is reminding me the way that
- 45:51it's like a pancake that's topped with a bunch of stuff. I saw a
- 45:54video the other day, a real on Facebook where this lady takes right that's
- 46:00left over, like the kind of sticky rice, and she presses it in
- 46:06a waffle maker and he's super crispy on the outside, and then it's got
- 46:09that dense rice inside and she just tops it with all kinds of stuff and
- 46:15she topped it with like avocado and raw fish. But I'm you could do
- 46:20absolutely anything and it would be really good on that crispy waffle, a savory
- 46:24waffle. So yeah, lots of ideas today that are calling out to me.
- 46:32But it's just this moment of him tossing the bonito flakes and standing posing
- 46:37as he tosses them and then says, and that's how it's done. And
- 46:42this chef is just like, that's impossible, and he sinks to his knees
- 46:45and puts his hands down on the fucking like grill and he's feeling himself and
- 46:52thinking like, oh, at least Robin is going to really appreciate how well
- 46:57I did. He turns and Robin's gone, and when he tries to get
- 47:02Nami's attention, she's sitting with that mochi guy I can't remember his name,
- 47:09which she's trying to get some information out of him, but he is very
- 47:15disappointed. Meanwhile, of course Lufy literally dives head first into this meal because
- 47:20why wouldn't he. So, yeah, she is talking with him, and
- 47:27she gets she's trying to get him drunk in order to find out what the
- 47:30hell's going on, but she gets him a little too drunk. He is
- 47:37struggling, so she calls the baron the flower guy, which this guy takes
- 47:43exception to, and he says, he's a great man, strong and courageous,
- 47:50and he's kind, the greatest of the greatest of the greatest of men.
- 47:55And he all he says is like because he you know, she's trying
- 48:02to get what she's asking him questions, but she's being like very she's not
- 48:10getting to the point. And I know that's part of questioning in this fashion
- 48:16effectively, is that you can't be too direct or it's very clear what you're
- 48:21trying to do. But this guy asks, why are you drinking with me
- 48:24instead of your nakama? And she says, I don't know, we've never
- 48:32fought like this before. I just thought to myself that I wanted to hear
- 48:37about Mucci. And when he's like, who's that, Well, your name
- 48:46is muchI Garo, so I call you Mucci and he starts sweating and looks
- 48:51like kind of like he doesn't know what to do, and then all of
- 48:54a sudden is like, actually, no, you know what, I'm into
- 48:58it. Yeah, let's go with that. This is when we see Zoro
- 49:00in this outfit. You guys. He's wearing a black suit with a white
- 49:06collared shirt that he has like unbuttoned to almost his belly button, with a
- 49:12gold chain on. And this look works for him. I am just saying
- 49:16it is a good look on him, and I'm not trying to say that
- 49:21he doesn't look good in anything, because Zoro is Bay, but this is
- 49:25the best look on him I think ever. I will say though, earlier,
- 49:32when Sanji is taking the challenge to do this like food thing, he
- 49:39looks pretty Bay there as well, because he was like not ruffled at all
- 49:45by anybody's suggestion that he wasn't up to it. And then when Lufy complimented
- 49:51the guy on the food that he was making. That was when Sanji was
- 49:53like, you know what, fuck this, And I fucking felt that in
- 49:57my soul. Man, I nobody is going to try and come at me
- 50:00about my cooking. It's not happening. I'm not going to allow it straight
- 50:05up. So anyway, he runs off trying to find Robin. Zoro's looking
- 50:10around and it is just like, what is happening even tonight? And this
- 50:15is as close to like a real resort vibe as we get. We have
- 50:19all the people like that are sort of standing around looking sitting at tables and
- 50:23eating the food that he has made, and you know, with the fire
- 50:28and the torches and everything, it feels like really relaxed and nice. So
- 50:35I started to sort of let my guard down a little bit here. But
- 50:38this is when we cut to Robin, who is looking out at this area
- 50:44with tons and tons of busted up ships and she doesn't say anything, but
- 50:50it's clearly like bad news and this mochi. He says that they were the
- 51:00Red Arrows, a really strong pirate crew. I'm sure the Baron could even
- 51:07beat Roger. And she says, which Roger are you talking about? And
- 51:12he's like, well, gold Roger. What do you mean which Roger?
- 51:17There's one Roger, like, come on, and she says, well,
- 51:23he was executed a long time ago though, like he's been dead for twenty
- 51:28years. And this guy says, what are you talking about? There is
- 51:34no way that's true. And I still I should have realized what was happening
- 51:39here, but I wasn't getting it. So this guy says, I met
- 51:43I just met him recently. And we're seeing like flashes of this storm and
- 51:51he says, before that stormy night. And as he's saying this, the
- 51:54camera keeps going back to this like candle that's guttering lower and lower in its
- 52:01holder, and Mucci is looking away from her and clearly like not really focused
- 52:07on the conversation. He's caught up in some weird memory. We see the
- 52:15broken up ships and he I'm trying to because we cut over to Robin here,
- 52:22who's just like, what is happening? What is going on over here?
- 52:29And oh, that's right. She turns to this figure that's sitting there.
- 52:37She says, I thought I would find it here. I think it's
- 52:43her that's saying or thinking it, but the baron is like sitting and watching
- 52:47her and Mucci says the secret flower, the lily Carnation, and the baron
- 53:00is sort of finishing his sentence in a whole other place, the flower of
- 53:04death and rebirth. And Robin turns around and we see this thing like towering
- 53:14over her, and it is so weird, you guys, because I don't
- 53:19understand exactly how this thing works. It's a huge it looks like a giant
- 53:30pipe but not it's not hollow, well it kind of is, but it's
- 53:35just a really weird thing. She sees it and she's like, you call
- 53:38that a flower? And as she's looking at this, we cut back to
- 53:44Mucci, who's like crying and trembling, and Nannie says, what happened that
- 53:50night, Mucci? And he drops his hands and looks at her, and
- 53:57his face is like rotting away. It's truly horrifying, you guys. It's
- 54:04really really creepy, Like it's just so sudden and unexpected with everything that's going
- 54:07on. And he gets up and stumbles off and says, I'm so sorry.
- 54:16And there's a real like energy to it of I just drank too much.
- 54:22I'm going to be sick almost. You know. It doesn't like if
- 54:28you missed what his face was doing. You might not understand the intensity of
- 54:34what's happening. So Robin, for her part, is like stuck with this
- 54:42fucking psycho who pulls his bow out. And you guys, this moment was
- 54:47so unnerving to me because she's looking at the thing and she's like, you
- 54:52can't call that a flower. That's like that thing, that's not what it
- 54:57is. And when she turns and looks at the baron, the flower on
- 55:01his shoulder gets this really excited expression on its face that's so extra creepy because
- 55:07of how harmless its face otherwise seems to be, so when it gets this
- 55:15like eager expression, it's extra creepy. So this is when everybody gets together
- 55:24and it is like where is Robin. She said she was going to look
- 55:28for a flower, and of course Nami shows up and she's like I heard
- 55:30about a flower too, and they all realize that they don't know where us
- 55:35up is, and this is when it gets a little personal, and Sanji
- 55:40starts accusing. First of all, he gets mad at Zoro for not keeping
- 55:44an eye on them too, which Zoro rightfully is like, they're not children.
- 55:47I can't do that. Twenty four seven, which I think is fair.
- 55:52But this is when Sanji is like, this is your fault, dude.
- 55:57You're the reason that we're even here, and you have to do something
- 56:01about it. You're the one who got us into this. So this is
- 56:09you, guys. This is so freaky. Mucci is on the ground,
- 56:15he's got like teeth missing, he is a disaster, and the Baron walks
- 56:25up sees him there, and instead of really reacting like I would expect,
- 56:34maybe like nothing to see here, instead he's like, all right, it's
- 56:38time for the next ordeal, and he just like moves it along. So
- 56:44this is when the DJ shows up and he's the one who stole Usup's hat,
- 56:49which to their credit, Sanji and Zoro immediately recognize. They see the
- 56:55hat and they're instantly like, come on, kid, we know that you
- 57:00fucking took that from our friend. Where is he? What did you do
- 57:04to him? And I love the fact that they get his name wrong and
- 57:07he's super offended by it. So this is when he says. The baron
- 57:19says, if you want to find your friends, you have to get through
- 57:22the next ordeal, and they're like, give me a fucking break, you're
- 57:27going to tell us where our friends are, and when he refuses, both
- 57:32Sanji and Zoro are like, fuck this shit, We're bailing. And the
- 57:42next ordeal is sharpshooters that are going to hunt them, and they have to
- 57:46dodge. And it's a really eerie moment because Nanni is trying to get Lufy's
- 57:53attention, and Lufy clearly is like so affected by the accusation levied against him
- 57:59that this is all his fault that he doesn't even move when it's time to
- 58:02run, and all the sharpshooters just go right past him. They don't give
- 58:07him the time of day. They don't seem to be like, oh,
- 58:09perfect opportunity. This kid isn't defending himself, let's just go after him.
- 58:14It's just him and the baron sort of facing down, and he had been,
- 58:23you know, warned about the fact that he was going to the Nakama
- 58:28were going to vanish, that they were would be separated from each other,
- 58:32but he's only just starting to really understand how real this threat is. So
- 58:38the baron fires an arrow at him, and this arrow first of all materializes
- 58:45out of nowhere on the end, like it's really weird how it forms but
- 58:52this guy can apparently just make a bunches of them appear at once, because
- 58:58we see him fire like hundreds of these. And I have to assume that
- 59:06will White watch this movie because there is a lot about the vibe of this
- 59:13that I feel in the Cradle books, and the whole thing with this like
- 59:17Archer, it's just giving malice to me. So for those of you who
- 59:22are not fans of Cradle, if you're listening to this podcast, you should
- 59:28definitely go read Cradle. I'm just saying. So the whole thing with like
- 59:34Zoro and Sangi bailing they don't get to bail is the thing like they run
- 59:38off and act like they're not going to participate, but they are still being
- 59:43hunted. And this kid, the DJ is like really not here to play.
- 59:50He's throwing these discs that like explode on impact, and he says something
- 59:55about how they can't get away, and they like he's writing what almost looks
- 1:00:01like a it's like a turtle shell, but it's been made into a skateboard.
- 1:00:09I guess it's a Really the whole vibe of this kid is so off
- 1:00:16putting. You know the fact that he's got like no nos the fact that
- 1:00:22he has this weird like plant growing out of his head, the just the
- 1:00:30whole thing so not Sanji Zoro goes up against him and is basically like,
- 1:00:37fuck you kid, I can't believe you did this? What are you?
- 1:00:39What are you even trying here? And he delivers a cut and the kid
- 1:00:45does not bleed. He doesn't even get hurt at all. It's a really
- 1:00:52weird moment, and he doesn't seem to understand why not. He's looking at
- 1:00:57it like that's weird. Why isn't that Why isn't that doing anything? And
- 1:01:02Zoro also is like, I don't get it. What tricker you using?
- 1:01:08The baron comes up behind Zoro and takes him down with an arrow, and
- 1:01:14so dj comes over to the baron and is like, hey, how can
- 1:01:17I never get hurt? What's the deal? And the baron is just like,
- 1:01:23you're very strong, that's why. And he's like, but I'm not
- 1:01:28really that strong, and he's like, no, but you are, though,
- 1:01:31and he says, yeah, okay, I guess I really am.
- 1:01:38He promises to go and find Lofy and he starts walking away and begins to
- 1:01:45stumble and says, I feel weird, but this does happen all the time.
- 1:01:52And he puts his hand to his face and when he takes it away,
- 1:01:55he's gotten really gone and his eyes are doing weird like circles within circles
- 1:02:00sort of things, extremely creepy. So, you guys, it's just I
- 1:02:12really like I hate this. This whole thing. The way it's being revealed,
- 1:02:15I just think is so well done, because you know something is wrong,
- 1:02:20but you're still not quite getting what the fuck you know. So we've
- 1:02:25got all these dudes that were sharpshooters and they have collapsed inside the building that
- 1:02:30they had like chased the boys into, and one of them says something about
- 1:02:36how he doesn't feel good and maybe he overdid it and let's just take a
- 1:02:40rest and once we rest will be fine, and it's it's like none of
- 1:02:52them are aware of what's happening to them either, which I feel like it
- 1:02:57would be a really different entergy if they were all in on it. But
- 1:03:01the fact that they don't seem to get it is what makes this so extra
- 1:03:06sad. And it as an element of like there was not consent involved here,
- 1:03:12you know. It's really really reminding me of Maria, but done in
- 1:03:16an extremely serious sort of way versus like the over the top goofiness of that
- 1:03:22island. This is a real investigation of like what you'd be willing to do,
- 1:03:31you know. So we go to Lufy, who is sitting with the
- 1:03:37guy with the mustache who wants him to become one of his nakama. He
- 1:03:39admits eventually that he's the only one left and tries to convince Lufy that he
- 1:03:45has to become one in order to get the like map, so to speak,
- 1:03:51of how to get out of this place, because every door he leaves
- 1:03:53through he winds up back in this room. And this is when Lufy sees
- 1:04:01the picture of him, and the guy finally says I'm currently the only member
- 1:04:06left. And we find out later this dude was the captain and he says
- 1:04:14something about, you know, the day that they were all swallowed by that
- 1:04:16gigantic monster, and we cut away from him here. I'm sorry if you
- 1:04:23guys can hear that. Sam is asleep, but he's like growling in his
- 1:04:27sleep. It's a precious thing. So, okay, this is the moment
- 1:04:34that you find out what the fuck is really happening here. The flower on
- 1:04:39the Baron's shoulder is saying I'm hungry, and the baron says, well,
- 1:04:45it's time to eat, And the camera goes up to that weird pipe thing
- 1:04:54and all of these holes begin to form in the surface of it, and
- 1:05:00these threads come out of it, and you, guys, this could have
- 1:05:06been designed in so many different ways, and they went with this, which
- 1:05:16is absolutely nightmarish. Like I wouldn't ever think to even go in this general
- 1:05:27direction, never mind this specific design. I don't know if this is like
- 1:05:31based on a plant that exists, or where the fuck this freakish idea came
- 1:05:38from, but the nature of the plant and the way it works adds so
- 1:05:45much horror to the whole affair, Like it just takes the creepy factor up
- 1:05:50to a thousand. It is remarkable to me how incredibly scary this becomes once
- 1:05:59you see how this works. I can't emphasize enough how much my mind was
- 1:06:04like rejecting what I was seeing, because it is not the kind of thing
- 1:06:09you see from one piece usually this is just a different animal and the animation
- 1:06:15of the holes appearing in it. Also, I think it's tripophobia triptophobia.
- 1:06:20I can't remember what it's called, but people who have like an aversion to
- 1:06:24seeing lots of holes in a thing in one place. It's definitely like playing
- 1:06:29on that sort of fear. If you don't know what I'm talking about,
- 1:06:32I wouldn't recommend that you google it because it is a real freaky thing.
- 1:06:36People have done a lot of animation stuff with it, and even if it's
- 1:06:40something that you don't think would bother you, once you see the images that
- 1:06:43come up, you start to be like, actually, never mind, yeah,
- 1:06:45no, that really really bothers me. But yeah, So the threads
- 1:06:51come down and sees whoever's like on the ground and begin to lift them into
- 1:06:59the air. And these threads, it's not like they shoot straight down.
- 1:07:03This is what I mean in terms of like the design. When I'm describing
- 1:07:09it, it sounds like a bunch of ropes come out and like drop and
- 1:07:15grab somebody and yank them back like their bungee cords or something. No,
- 1:07:19these threads spool out into the air in very irregular patterns, like their weightless,
- 1:07:27and then the tips of them float to the ground, wrap around somebody
- 1:07:33and as like the threads like lift them up, but it doesn't seem like
- 1:07:40they're being retracted it seems like the threads themselves are animated. It's the worst.
- 1:07:48I hate it so much. It's so fucking creepy. So it goes
- 1:07:56after Daisy, the very little girl, and Chopper interferes and saves her and
- 1:08:02gets her out, and he turns into the larger versions of himself and is
- 1:08:06like beating the hell out of this plant, trying to do something, but
- 1:08:13the baron is like, good, trying everything, but too late, And
- 1:08:18this is I have offered. This is the first time I had offered Lily
- 1:08:23somebody with the powers of a devil fruit. So we see Chopper being carried
- 1:08:29into the air, and the father of Daisy is starting to walk away,
- 1:08:35and then he hears her call out and turns around and sees that Daisy is
- 1:08:40trying to save Chopper because Chopper saved her. Both of his kids run up
- 1:08:45and try and grab Daisy to save her, and their dad from far away
- 1:08:51is like, guys, come on, let's get out of here, and
- 1:08:57his eldest daughter, who has no respect for him at all, says,
- 1:09:00you're supposed to be strong, aren't you help us save the reindeer? And
- 1:09:05instead he comes and grabs his children and pulls them off of Chopper's hand,
- 1:09:12and they're like, Dad, he saved Daisy, Why are you just letting
- 1:09:16him go? And he slaps his daughter in the face and she calls him
- 1:09:24a coward and he doesn't argue with her at all. He's just like,
- 1:09:27yeah, I am And I was like, yeah, you slapped your daughter
- 1:09:30because she told you to do the right thing. One hundred percent are more
- 1:09:34than a coward? Like come on. This is when the baron says,
- 1:09:43show me more. I love to see pirates fighting amongst themselves. And I
- 1:09:51was like, what are you? What? What does that mean? And
- 1:09:57we cut back to mustache guy who is talking to Lufy about how the baron
- 1:10:03said specifically that seeing the camaraderie between Nakama like fills him with rage and that
- 1:10:15he wants to chop him into pieces and make them all feel the same pain
- 1:10:20that he has felt. So this is when Chopper says, my Nakama is
- 1:10:30going to come and save me and he'll beat you to a pulpe. The
- 1:10:33baron is like, no, he won't come, and they go back and
- 1:10:39forth like this, and the more faith Chopper shows, the more angry the
- 1:10:45baron becomes, and he's just like stopped saying that they're not going to come,
- 1:10:51and I hate this. We turn Chopper around and he sees his friends
- 1:11:02embedded in this weirdo plant and they have there's like this effect in the animation
- 1:11:10that almost makes it look like they're surrounded by like what's the word I want?
- 1:11:15It's almost like mercury, like moving silvery, you know. So the
- 1:11:24baron here says, Nakama, Nakama, Nakama, that's all they ever talk
- 1:11:28about. You will nourish Lily well. And the threads let go of Chopper
- 1:11:33and just drop him into it, and you don't see him like hit,
- 1:11:39but you do see Lily go and eventually begin like making chewing motions with her
- 1:11:47mouth. It is, I mean, you guys, truly horror movie type
- 1:11:53stuff, so so freaky. At the moment that makes that motion, it's
- 1:12:01like Lufy can feel it. And he like sits up and it's like,
- 1:12:10I've got to get out of here, and he opens one of the doors
- 1:12:14and flees from this mustache guy and apparently like chose correctly because he winds up
- 1:12:17actually getting away. And I like to think that he has such a connection
- 1:12:23with his crew that he that he felt what happened to Chopper, and also
- 1:12:30that was what led him to choose the right door, that it was like
- 1:12:33an instinctual thing. He knew what direction to go in. And I don't
- 1:12:38know that that's correct, but I'm that's what I'm thinking. And this is
- 1:12:43when Mucci wakes up, because apparently feeding Lily is what regenerates them and makes
- 1:12:49them come back to life, and he's super happy to see his friend.
- 1:12:57Ah you guys, so yeah, he says, go back and join the
- 1:13:04others, and Lufy shows up and is like, I am going to fucking
- 1:13:12take you down. So we have a drawn out thing here, and I'm
- 1:13:16going to speed it up a little bit because I have been I'm an hour
- 1:13:21and fifteen minutes in and i haven't even like really gotten to the fight.
- 1:13:29And I'm gonna the fight isn't the important part, I'll be honest. What
- 1:13:33happens here is Lufy demands to know where his friends are and it is like,
- 1:13:44I am never gonna let you hurt them, and this dude is like,
- 1:13:47l ol, that's really funny. They're gone already. And when he
- 1:13:55says, you say, you'll never let me hurt them, and he's it's
- 1:14:00giggling like this is truly the best thing he's ever heard, which is like,
- 1:14:06wouldn't you understand the pain that he's in and seeing it in somebody else
- 1:14:13that it gives him like some comfort. It's a real weird Like again,
- 1:14:16just get therapy. So Lufy is about to try and fight him, and
- 1:14:21he just keeps firing arrows and like holding him in place doing this. Eventually
- 1:14:29there's only his head free, and he like does shoot his head forward.
- 1:14:33He says something with the boy with the phallic nose has just died. I
- 1:14:39was like, really, that's what we're saying, okay. So Lufy's head
- 1:14:45is the only thing that goes forward and he sees Zoro and he had caught
- 1:14:51one of the arrows in his mouth. And what I had thought was going
- 1:14:58to happen right here was that he was just going to like jam the arrow
- 1:15:03into the plant or somehow managed to hand the arrow to Zoro, who is
- 1:15:11a fighter, and it would like he would revive and fight back using the
- 1:15:16arrow. I thought the arrow was going to play into this somehow. Spoiler
- 1:15:20alert, it does not at all. He literally just opens his mouth in
- 1:15:24horror and the arrow falls out of his mouth onto the ground and that's it.
- 1:15:29That's there's nothing with the arrow. But I really thought that was going
- 1:15:31to be something. So at this point, Lufy is certain that all of
- 1:15:41his friends are dead. He really thinks like, that's it. I'm I
- 1:15:45fucked up. They're all gone. And the little girl Daisy is the one
- 1:15:53who's like, no, they're they're not gone. I can hear them.
- 1:15:57I can hear them cheering for you. And I don't know if we ever
- 1:16:01find out exactly where this like connection comes from, but I like the fact
- 1:16:08that her name is Daisy because she's a flower and that somehow she's like able
- 1:16:14to hear. So, yeah, the mustache guy with all of his tunnels,
- 1:16:20he retrieves Lufy's body, and yeah, this is the moment where because
- 1:16:27they're like trying to take care of him and revive him, and she's like,
- 1:16:30yeah, the mister Reindeers is looking for you. He's asking where he
- 1:16:35are. And I really like the animation here because everybody's their normal like appearance,
- 1:16:43but Lufy is very gray. He's like dark, you know. It's
- 1:16:47it's like he's in a totally different light source or something, and nobody can
- 1:16:54hear them except for Daisy apparently, so that's helpful. This leads to,
- 1:17:03of course, the big attack, where Lufy has decided that he is going
- 1:17:10to go up against this fucking plant and the baron and everybody who is left
- 1:17:16has decided that they're going to help him as much as they can. I
- 1:17:21love Lufy jumping in front of mustache guy and catching all of the arrows on
- 1:17:27a shield made out of rock, as this is a really good moment.
- 1:17:30It's a badass moment for him. And he shoots forward with his fist and
- 1:17:34punches this dude in the face and it's one solid punch, but the way
- 1:17:39it's animated makes it look like he punched him like six or seven times.
- 1:17:44And he turns and does the mustache salute to his mustache guy. You guys,
- 1:17:50that was so moving. It's such a silly thing, and I was
- 1:17:54just like, oh my god, he gets all teary eyed because you know,
- 1:17:57nobody's left who even knows that salute anymore. He tried to get Lufy
- 1:18:00to do it earlier, and Lufy was nonplussed and just didn't and then he
- 1:18:04does it for him in this moment to just be like I'm doing this for
- 1:18:06you and all of our people. You know, it was just really sweet.
- 1:18:11So Lufy jumps up and he bashes this fucking plant, which starts to
- 1:18:16shoot this sort of weird rainbow ish light out of it, very weird looking,
- 1:18:24and I was definitely thinking, hey, I don't know if you want
- 1:18:26to get caught in that rainbow light. But that feels like a bad deal.
- 1:18:30And it's just so weird seeing him fight this weird shaped creature. You
- 1:18:38know, it's just not it's just all so strange. So he punches it
- 1:18:45enough that it begins to fall apart, and it's looking like sweet. He
- 1:18:50won. It's breaking and they're all gonna like fall out of it. And
- 1:18:56this is when Daisy says something is wrong. The voice is are coming from
- 1:19:00somewhere else now, and he turns around and sees this image that I am
- 1:19:08still like trying to understand. It's like the whole plant is made of arrows.
- 1:19:17I am not getting this. I'm gonna be honest with you, guys.
- 1:19:21I don't know if it's supposed to be that the arrows are like that's
- 1:19:27where he was getting the arrows from. Was that this plant is made of
- 1:19:30them, or if it can just like transmute its shape into other things or
- 1:19:35what. But it's like been broken open and there's all these arrows sort of
- 1:19:42hovering and clustered inside. I could not make sense of this. I don't
- 1:19:46understand it. And he says, where are they? And then we see
- 1:19:50Lily's face in all these holes opening and it's the worst. It is the
- 1:19:58worst, you guys, And the baron says, they're right here, and
- 1:20:04Lily explodes out of the Baron's back and has all of his friends like in
- 1:20:12pods wrapped up and this is really giving envy from Full Metal Alchemists, the
- 1:20:18like horror aspect of this animation. At this point, the baron is like
- 1:20:25just a carrier. He's barely even participating here, you know, like he's
- 1:20:30talking, but it's very much like he's a puppet. And he says die.
- 1:20:39All of these arrows that had been like in the air turn and begin
- 1:20:45to head toward Lufy, and there's literally millions of them at this point.
- 1:20:49It is completely out of control, and he says, every single one of
- 1:20:57those arrows symbolizes a day of loneliness I endured after that storm. They are
- 1:21:02the number of regrets I've suffered from suddenly losing every one of my beloved na
- 1:21:08Cooma, and we get to see again the like images of the storm,
- 1:21:17and Lufy is like in the midst of this, completely shot through with arrows,
- 1:21:23and his eyes are white, so it appears that he has been taken
- 1:21:28over as well. And Daisy runs forward and she says, mister Reindeer and
- 1:21:34the others are still alive and they're cheering for you, and it's like Lufy
- 1:21:39can hear her, even though this thing is attempting to take over his will.
- 1:21:45He's got such a creepy like color to him in this scene, and
- 1:21:51so he's like walking forward. He looks like a straight up porcupine with all
- 1:21:55the arrows sticking out of him, still walking forward, saying my nakama,
- 1:22:00nakama, whatever it is, and telling the baron to give them back.
- 1:22:08The baron is truly horrified that he is still walking and able to attempt to
- 1:22:15save them. It's like it's breaking Lufy's will that he's after and let's see.
- 1:22:30Daisy says that her hearing has always been good. This is when she's
- 1:22:33talking to her dad. I heard everything you told, mister Graindeer behind that
- 1:22:36grave. Earlier this evening, and I just my hearing is just really really
- 1:22:45good. I can hear the faintest sounds. I just pretended not to know.
- 1:22:51You're always trying so hard to keep us happy. And her dad has
- 1:22:59a moment of real like, oh my god, I didn't I feel like
- 1:23:02an idiot, and she's like, but that is because you really are strong.
- 1:23:06And I like that, especially because yeah, he did a shitty thing
- 1:23:11with just being like, get away from Chopper, let him die. But
- 1:23:14I, you know, like I can't blame him too much. It's like
- 1:23:16he's holding onto the only thing he's got left and saying, you are strong
- 1:23:24for the way you keep fighting for us. That's not wrong, you know.
- 1:23:29So he decides here that he's going to do something, and he sneaks
- 1:23:32up behind the baron and draws an arrow and Lily is like turning and coming
- 1:23:40at him, and he lets loose as his daughter is yelling, don't give
- 1:23:45up, and that arrow just busts right through Lily. It is guy's Lily
- 1:23:51looks so creepy. Now it's a much more like feed me seymore sort of
- 1:23:56imagery happening at this point. Yeah, Lily explodes in this like green burst,
- 1:24:06and all of these like bits come out of her, and instantly all
- 1:24:14of his friends on the island and all of the people in the stands and
- 1:24:18everything turn into plants, and all of the arrows that had been impaling lofy
- 1:24:26and were littering the ground vanish like they were just illusions. And the bits
- 1:24:34that fall out of her, I'm guessing are like supposed to be the remains
- 1:24:40of his friends, and the baron just completely dissolves into tears and begins desperately
- 1:24:46like picking all of them up, and it's like a moment where I was
- 1:24:53really actually feeling bad for him, like there was a frantic quality to it.
- 1:24:58And he turned around and screams unforgivable and has completely lost the plot,
- 1:25:09and Lufy is able to get him because he gets a drop on and this
- 1:25:14dude is very very distracted, and everything turns white and becomes this weird,
- 1:25:20like sketchy animation as he punches this guy, and it's like he has a
- 1:25:28vision from being punched, and he's saying all of his friends names and saying,
- 1:25:34please don't go, don't leave me alone, and then we see the
- 1:25:40photo of them all and they're like talking to him and saying, we're really
- 1:25:48sorry to have gone, and we love that you kept the memory of us,
- 1:25:56but you really should have forgotten about us. Or I'm imagining a better
- 1:26:00translation would be like you needed to let us go after that night. We
- 1:26:06don't mind. You should have found some new knockama And he says new knockamam
- 1:26:15like that just never occurred to him. And they said, look like them.
- 1:26:23And Lufy is surrounded by his new friends who helped him out, and
- 1:26:30he wakes up. It's light out, and he says, I thought I
- 1:26:34was gonna die. He sees all of these people like standing over him and
- 1:26:40I'm sitting here, like, where where are his people? Though? Where
- 1:26:43are they? Because I'm sure I know they're fine, but like, where
- 1:26:46did they go? Though? Like what happened? And he starts to sit
- 1:26:51up, and it's just like in so much pain, and he said,
- 1:27:00I couldn't have done it without all of you guys. And I really like
- 1:27:04this. He's giving Osan credit and everything. This is when he hears Daisy
- 1:27:12yelling mister Reindeer and she is running toward him. I really like the way
- 1:27:17the camera is upside down at first, and then it turns over as he's
- 1:27:20sort of getting his bearings and all of his friends are coming up over the
- 1:27:28crest of the hill and the sun is just coming up and Lufy, who
- 1:27:34is on his back looking at them from like upside down, he just smiles
- 1:27:40with satisfaction. It's so weird, guys. We see us up here with
- 1:27:45no hat or anything on his hair, and I'm sure we've seen him that
- 1:27:47way before, but I didn't remember it at all. And they all ask
- 1:27:55him, what are you doing sleeping out here? So I guess it's supposed
- 1:27:58to be that they just don't remember what happened. And he starts laughing,
- 1:28:03and that's the end of the movie. It's just like it's a weird ending
- 1:28:08where I was like, I'm not really sure what I'm supposed to think about,
- 1:28:11like it wiped their memories or what like, you know. But anyway,
- 1:28:18yeah, I really really enjoyed this. It was so creepy, you
- 1:28:21guys, It really really was. I really like this. This is the
- 1:28:25sort of thing that I would be willing to show people who didn't know one
- 1:28:28piece because I feel like, even out of context, it really works as
- 1:28:30a movie. So all right, I'm gonna wrap this up, but thank
- 1:28:34you again so much Max for commissioning this. This was super fun and I
- 1:28:40feel like this is a movie I would watch again, I really do.
- 1:28:43I wish that there was a better way to watch it than just like downloading
- 1:28:45a file, but what can you do? All right, everybody, thank
- 1:28:49you again and until next time to the loom. Motherfuckers. That was an
- 1:29:23unspoiled Network podcast.
