Latest / Rusty's Garage / Drivers Only: Championship Episode with Will Brown, Broc Feeney and James Courtney
Transcript
- 0:02A listener production.
- 0:06It's time for the final ep of what's been a great first season of Drivers Only.
- 0:10We were thrilled here at Listener that Supercars chose Rusty's Garage so you could enjoy it in pod form, and they come in to record each episode to our studios, and we capture them both audio and vision, so it's published on the Sports YouTube channel too.
- 0:25To the fans who listen, those who watch, thank you all so much.
- 0:28Merry Christmas to you, your family and friends.
- 0:31We are looking forward to an even bigger episode
- 0:33and better year in 2025.
- 0:35But we're going to finish with a bang.
- 0:37Fittingly for this one, we have the new champion with us today, Will Brown.
- 0:42He is joined to debrief the Adelaide 500.
- 0:45What a memorable weekend that was to look back on the season in general, celebrations and, of course, a few laughs, by his teammate Brock Feeney, who did a super job on The Last Step, and by James Courtney, who's been superb driving these shows when he's been on.
- 0:59In keeping with our promise to let these be, the drivers, in their words, I'm about to step out and leave the panel with the keys.
- 1:07This is the season finale of Drivers Only.
- 1:10Enjoy.
- 1:25Welcome everyone to the last episode, episode eight of The Drivers Only.
- 1:30We have Brock, second in the championship, and the new crowned 2024 V8 Supercars champion.
- 1:39I was hoping you were actually going to bring the trophy in here, mate.
- 1:42I wanted to make sure my name was still on it.
- 1:43I think it's lost from someone.
- 1:44Will Brown, by the way.
- 1:46Round of applause, everyone.
- 1:48Thank you.
- 1:48I don't even know where the trophy is right now, but no, it feels pretty cool.
- 1:54You have to be pretty excited, mate.
- 1:55It was a cracking... And you broke the record for the only guy to ever get a podium in every round.
- 2:01Yeah, well, in the last 40 years, but... Oh, that's pretty good.
- 2:05Yeah.
- 2:06I'm like, it's on.
- 2:07Because for a while, I thought, like, the GOAT, when he won, like, 800 championships and McLaughlin, for sure I thought those guys would have...
- 2:14I thought McLaughlin would have done it, to be honest.
- 2:16He had, like, a crazy stat of, like, his 2.8... 2.3 average finishing position.
- 2:19So I thought...
- 2:22Bathurst probably brings a lot of people undone and sand down and stuff.
- 2:25Yeah, that's a good point.
- 2:26But, yeah, I feel like Saturday when I wrapped it up, I was like, yeah, it's pretty cool but nothing's changed.
- 2:32I couldn't get to do a burnout.
- 2:33And then the Sunday race, thanks a lot for helping me out with the win.
- 2:37But, yeah, I was – You did well.
- 2:39Yeah, yeah.
- 2:40I would have had to.
- 2:41Yeah, but I was pretty stoked with the Sunday race.
- 2:43That made it sort of set in a bit.
- 2:46As I went past, I was a little bit deeper in the field than Brock.
- 2:49As I went past and I saw you there, I was like, oh, that poor bugger.
- 2:52But then I was like, oh, you won't care that it's the last race.
- 2:55And then all of a sudden you're behind me.
- 2:56I'm like, fuck him.
- 2:57Yeah, I know.
- 2:58I'm like, just go fast.
- 3:00Yeah.
- 3:00Holy smokes, you're quick.
- 3:02I don't know.
- 3:02I don't know where it came from.
- 3:03I remember turning around.
- 3:04I'm like, oh, this is going to suck.
- 3:05I'm going to finish 15th and then have to do a burnout.
- 3:08Like, you know, not have to, but it's going to be not as exciting.
- 3:11And then I was like, oh, just a little bit of fun, see who I can pick off.
- 3:14And then I think it was after the first stop.
- 3:15He's like, yeah, you're P8 and that's third in front of you.
- 3:18And I'm like, how did we get back here?
- 3:20But the car was fast.
- 3:22Yeah, both of you guys were stupid fast over the whole weekend.
- 3:27wasn't team orders.
- 3:28There wasn't a multi-21 or anything come over the radio.
- 3:31Did you hear the little meow on the radio?
- 3:35That's our call.
- 3:36Yeah.
- 3:37Yeah, so thanks, Brock, for doing it.
- 3:40Yeah.
- 3:41What was he doing anyway?
- 3:42Like, why was he trying to race you?
- 3:43So, okay.
- 3:44So, I was told.
- 3:45I would say that it's his fault.
- 3:47I was told, like, Chas has been told pretty much to, like, let you go.
- 3:51So, as soon as he did that, I'm like, oh, righty-o.
- 3:53Like, I'll just show the nose.
- 3:54Game on here.
- 3:55So, yeah, obviously showed the nose and tried to back out.
- 3:57Because I mean, if he just let you pass and rolled around behind you, he still would have won.
- 4:00Yeah, he said to me afterwards, he's like, oh, I'd let you go with 12 to go.
- 4:03I was worried you're going to pull 15 seconds on me.
- 4:05I'm like, mate, like, I'm not that fast.
- 4:08I was fast at that point of the race, but we both had a bit of damage after the pit stop.
- 4:13I remember getting into third and I'm like, imagine if these two guys crashed and I won this from last, and then they're like, Chas is in the fence at turn five, and I'm trying to watch the big screen.
- 4:24I'm looking like, did Brock turn him?
- 4:25What's happened here?
- 4:26You're like, I'm going to get there.
- 4:28I'm like half like, don't mean to be rude, but I still wanted Chaz to win because obviously I just put him in the fence.
- 4:33So when I looked up at this, I'm looking up at the screen at eight and I can just see like Will on him.
- 4:38I'm like, oh my.
- 4:39Oh, yeah, it looked bad.
- 4:41But it's funny like.
- 4:43It's funny now.
- 4:44I don't even know.
- 4:45Like people online are bagging saying like, oh, I turned you for the other car.
- 4:48But we're team players, but I'm not that committed for you.
- 4:51If the team came over the radio and said, oh, you just fence this guy for Brock.
- 4:54I'm like.
- 4:55I'm not going to do that.
- 4:56You'll be negotiating.
- 4:57How much money?
- 4:58Yeah, like if they paid me a lot, I'll probably...
- 5:00There'll be a lot of meowing on the radio.
- 5:02Ten meows and I'll do it and that means dollars.
- 5:05So how did you come up with the burnout?
- 5:07I heard there was a little bit of stress.
- 5:09Yeah.
- 5:10Into the weekend of how I was going to celebrate if I did get it.
- 5:13I was a bit superstitious, which I never am going into the weekend.
- 5:19We both wouldn't touch a trophy.
- 5:21They wanted us to.
- 5:22And people were saying, oh, what's your burnout?
- 5:24What are you going to do here?
- 5:25Going into the weekend, I'm like, I'm not planning anything.
- 5:27Because you have a crash Saturday, Sunday happens as well, and you might not win the championship.
- 5:32So I said, not until I locked it up will I start thinking.
- 5:34So...
- 5:35I rolled in Sunday and I'm like, how am I going to do something here?
- 5:38So I got in the car and tried.
- 5:39I was like, well, you know, obviously Shane got out of the car.
- 5:42You can't beat Shane's.
- 5:43Everyone's like, it's not as good as Shane's.
- 5:44Righto, mate, I know that.
- 5:47I'm not going to beat you.
- 5:48He's been leaving to America and it didn't matter if I blew a tyre and turned him.
- 5:51Yeah, that's right.
- 5:52Like I was like, I can't beat that.
- 5:54So, you know, you're always going to let people down.
- 5:55But I was like, oh, I want to get out of the car, like see how Russell Ingle did it.
- 6:00But it was so hard because the pedals, but then obviously the new carbon bit down in our footwell and how far we sit on the inside.
- 6:07I was having to wrap.
- 6:08So I wrapped my right foot under my left and so right foot on the brake and left foot on the accelerator to actually be able to get out the side and then I'm like, oh, no.
- 6:19And then I was able to pull a bit of parting out.
- 6:20I could pull the parting out.
- 6:21I saw you reach down and grab something.
- 6:23So I could pull the parting out and then we made it that I could pull my pedals back as far as I could.
- 6:26So I did that and then I tried it all but obviously my hands device, then me being unflexible, I couldn't get out with my hands device.
- 6:33I'm getting stuck on the device.
- 6:34I'm getting stuck on the thing and I'm like, shit, this isn't going to plan.
- 6:38You know, you're trying to like, you're trying to make sure.
- 6:40One sort of move inside the car, you know.
- 6:42You know, you're trying to get out of the car while not crashing, while keeping the, like, you know, bending your leg, trying to keep accelerating.
- 6:48And you knack it from doing 250 cars.
- 6:50And I was pretty stuffed.
- 6:51So my plan was originally that the straight line burnout I did up the main straight, I'd be out of the car the whole way up there.
- 6:57But as I got going and it kept creeping sideways, I'm like, I'm not going to be able to control it properly.
- 7:02So when I did the flick spin and stopped, I was like, I'll get into it here and get out.
- 7:05But there's some cool photos.
- 7:07Like I did get out a fair way for a while, but then, yeah, I just couldn't keep my foot on the gas.
- 7:13Like I was just struggling.
- 7:14As soon as I would have opened the door and got up, I would have just been...
- 7:18Crap for myself.
- 7:18That I was going to fall out.
- 7:20Imagine you fall out and you just see your car going down the road.
- 7:24Yeah, I know.
- 7:24I didn't really think of that at the time.
- 7:26Did you hop with the belt around one arm or something?
- 7:28Yeah.
- 7:29My number one mechanic's like, just don't fall out, whatever you're doing.
- 7:31I'm like, I wasn't thinking about that.
- 7:33But then I got a mad cramp with my left foot and I'm like trying to manage this cramp.
- 7:37But...
- 7:37Yeah, it didn't go to plan.
- 7:39I'll have to, you know, you'd have to look at that, wouldn't you, again, if you did it?
- 7:42But I thought it was still cool.
- 7:43I thought it was good.
- 7:44You blew the bloody tyres off the thing, ripped the guards off it.
- 7:46That's all the crowd wants.
- 7:48They want smoke.
- 7:48They don't care if you're in or out of the thing.
- 7:50It was cool.
- 7:50It was pretty surreal, actually.
- 7:51Like, that moment probably made it set in, like, grabbing the trophy and hopping on the roof and everyone cheering.
- 7:56Like, it was probably something you wouldn't forget, that's for sure.
- 7:59You got on the roof a bit smoother than sand down.
- 8:01Yeah, yeah.
- 8:02He couldn't get on until sand down.
- 8:03He's like... Couldn't quite get up there.
- 8:05He slipped off.
- 8:05Need a little step ladder beside it.
- 8:08Oh, yeah.
- 8:08I couldn't even...
- 8:09I don't know if I went about it the wrong way, but I was like a little garden gnome trying to hop on the roof.
- 8:14I'm like trying to climb up.
- 8:16It just did not look good.
- 8:17It's like you're jumping onto the bunk beds at home.
- 8:20You just run up and try to hold yourself onto it.
- 8:23So I got out and got on the roof a bit more elegant this time.
- 8:26But...
- 8:27Yeah, no, that was a cool one.
- 8:28It's a cool place to wrap the championship up, isn't it?
- 8:31Like, it's such a, like, for me, I reckon, like, Bathurst is cool, but for me, outside of Bathurst, I reckon that's the best weekend of the year.
- 8:39Well, I think there's only three events that are at that level, and that's Gold Coast, Bathurst, and Adelaide.
- 8:45Like, you know what I mean?
- 8:46Adelaide's the best, but, you know, the others put on a show.
- 8:49But just all the stuff, like, it was just so much going on.
- 8:52Like, the sprint cars, seeing how many people were at that and looked like pretty good racing.
- 8:56Supercar.
- 8:57I think I finished the press conference and walking out, and then the Supercross is on.
- 9:01You could watch it from where you left, so I was watching the Supercross for a while.
- 9:05It was a pretty mega weekend.
- 9:07What about the stadium tracks?
- 9:09Oh, mate, did you see?
- 9:10What's it, Guy, Shea Davis?
- 9:11He drove out of the pit lane and did one jump and then rolled the thing and rode it off.
- 9:16He didn't even get down to the end of the strike.
- 9:18And then the next one, the fuel tank fell out.
- 9:20Yeah, with Mingo.
- 9:20Oh, I'm trying to get flashbacks.
- 9:23Oh, man.
- 9:23They were two huge crashes.
- 9:25We were walking into the track, and I said, whoom.
- 9:28And I'm like, oh, my God, that sounded big.
- 9:30And then a fireball.
- 9:31Yeah.
- 9:32You wonder how it actually falls out.
- 9:34Like, it was a decent shunt, but, like, it shot out pretty quickly.
- 9:37Yeah, and it's on fire.
- 9:38Yeah.
- 9:39Yeah, no, it's not a safety concern.
- 9:41It's a fuel tank.
- 9:42It's like the 80s F1, isn't it?
- 9:44Is it Martin Brundle was laying on the track strapped to the fuel tank?
- 9:48No, it wasn't Martin.
- 9:49It was Donnelly.
- 9:52Mitch doesn't know.
- 9:53That's English racing.
- 9:54He's American.
- 9:56But, yeah, was there anything through the weekend where you're like, this isn't going to come together like it?
- 10:02Was it one point?
- 10:03No.
- 10:03Yeah, I'm not sure.
- 10:04Like, I dropped back a little – well, I didn't drop back, but I was fifth in that first race, and then I stuffed up the pit stop.
- 10:09I had my steering wheel locked so the boys couldn't get the front tyres off, so I came back out in fifth, and Brock had done a few of the tyres and was first, and I knew – I'd calculated before – that if he finished first, I had to finish fourth, I think it was, or third.
- 10:23I had to finish third, and then I was wrapped up on Saturday.
- 10:25So I'm like –
- 10:27so I must have been forced.
- 10:28I was like, oh, this is going to go down to Sunday.
- 10:30And then if you have a DNF, like Brock's fast, he could definitely win again on Sunday.
- 10:34Like, you know, it's, it's still a bit of risk there.
- 10:36So I was quite lucky.
- 10:38Tickford helped us out putting the wrong tires on for, for Tom and Cam.
- 10:42And I got out of the pits and, and jumped Matt Payne and then got out and passed those guys.
- 10:46So, um, yeah, it was probably only that little bit of concern on Saturday when I was like, yeah, it's going to come down to Sunday and, and see what happens there.
- 10:53But, um,
- 10:54Yeah, I think no matter what, like next year is going to be crazy going in with four guys.
- 11:00Like those four guys that make it, the pressure is going to be pretty high.
- 11:02Like not that, you know, the pressure got to me, but you can feel the pressure on that.
- 11:06Like especially Gold Coast and those places where you're like, yeah, you're leading the championship.
- 11:10If you make a mistake, it's really going to come close.
- 11:13You know, you've been in that position, obviously.
- 11:15It's, you know, it's a lot of pressure.
- 11:17So next year is going to be cool for the fans, but it's going to be a massive last run, that's for sure.
- 11:22So are you like...
- 11:24running through your head, this is just like next year, I can just show everyone I can win the last race.
- 11:28Sort of.
- 11:29Because you were so... Like, both you guys were quick, but you were pretty dominant on the weekend.
- 11:33Yeah.
- 11:35Like, before the weekend, like at pre-brief, I was like to my engineer, I'm like...
- 11:39I'm taking this guy out.
- 11:40Yeah, yeah.
- 11:41Don't tell anyone.
- 11:43I'm like...
- 11:45we need to treat this like next year.
- 11:47Like we literally have to go there and we have to win both races, especially Saturday.
- 11:51Saturday was like, for me, like I didn't look past that.
- 11:54And, um, which is great.
- 11:56Cause it's a good position to practice for next year.
- 11:58And I remember in Saturday's race, like we all knew the calculations and I'm in third and Randall and Waters were that quick.
- 12:05I'm like, genuinely we'll could come forth in this race, but I'm just like,
- 12:10how the fuck am I going to win this?
- 12:12At the start, I didn't think I was fast enough.
- 12:13But, yeah, we made it work and we won the race.
- 12:16But, yeah, it's great practice for next year.
- 12:18Didn't you win by, like, some stupid margin as well on Saturday?
- 12:22Wasn't it?
- 12:23Saturday was 12.
- 12:24Not just 12.
- 12:26Cheeky little 12.
- 12:27It was nearly 20, I think, on Sunday.
- 12:29It was, like, 19 on Sunday.
- 12:30If you didn't take the bloke out, it would have been less.
- 12:32Yeah.
- 12:32You know, you had to claim 20 and you're fenced in.
- 12:35Yeah.
- 12:3712 wasn't enough yeah that's right but um yeah no we were fast it was good like I think obviously um I'm pretty happy it's at Adelaide the finale like it obviously goes good but you could rock up next year and be it's such a fun track though isn't it like in it it's one of the like places where we go and there's legitimately a few passing positions like there's not everyone has to wait for the one lap for the hairpin for a lunge or anything like there's one of the best ones of the year I nearly reckon yeah for passing it's
- 13:06produces always great racing.
- 13:08And how is qualifying?
- 13:10Like, that was huge.
- 13:12The shootout man nailed it.
- 13:15That was a lot of the gods.
- 13:16I called up the shootout.
- 13:19But that qualifying session was nuts.
- 13:21There won on Saturday.
- 13:23That was like...
- 13:24None of you guys got a lap on?
- 13:25No.
- 13:26No, we did.
- 13:27On Saturday?
- 13:27I did my fastest lap of the weekend in that one.
- 13:31On that one?
- 13:31Yeah, on that one.
- 13:33So I was pretty stoked.
- 13:35I've got a good lap in.
- 13:36I guess we're first out of pit lane, so it makes it easy.
- 13:38Yeah, first and last.
- 13:40We cleaned it up.
- 13:40Booking.
- 13:43But coming around the corner and they're like, yeah, there's a shunt at turn eight.
- 13:45And I've come around and I've seen all these cars parked on top.
- 13:48I'm like, is there oil down?
- 13:50Is there an Aussie race car going to roll out of this thing?
- 13:52Yeah, that's what I said in the press conference.
- 13:55It's definitely a Camaro.
- 13:57I was coming up and I...
- 13:59I saw the yellow flag and I could see smoke.
- 14:02And Reynolds was right in front of me.
- 14:04So I'm like, all right, this is massive.
- 14:05So I just rolled out of it.
- 14:07And old mate's like pulling gears out of seven up to eight.
- 14:09And I'm like, never get the yellow flag.
- 14:12And he just tips in.
- 14:13And I'm like way back.
- 14:14And then as I come around the corner, like his dampers bouncing around, bounces off the bonnet on my car.
- 14:19And then there's a wheel going down the track.
- 14:22It was wild.
- 14:23It was so...
- 14:25Such a big accident and it was so late.
- 14:28What are the chances of two cars shunting, like Cairns goes right fence and then meet up on top of each other?
- 14:35Yeah.
- 14:35They all did the exact same thing.
- 14:37Stanaway, him, or Hill and Reynolds all clipped that inside.
- 14:41Yeah.
- 14:41It's been a big talking point after the weekend is, oh, like, you know, you see fans on Facebook, oh, they've got to change it.
- 14:47It's so dangerous.
- 14:48Well, how many corners do you want to change in motorsport around the world then?
- 14:52Like, it's what makes, you know, when you go to Adelaide, you think, oh, yeah, righto, this is going to be a big weekend.
- 14:57Make sure I don't shunt it turn eight, you know, but I've got to be quick through there.
- 15:01It's what makes it exciting.
- 15:02Like, I don't think there was – you've raced there for years.
- 15:05Well, there wasn't anything different on the weekend.
- 15:07People just made mistakes.
- 15:08Like –
- 15:09Even the shadows, I don't remember the shadows being a thing.
- 15:12I'm sure they were there.
- 15:14Guys over the years, heaps of guys have hit that inside wall.
- 15:17And for me to change it or to say now we have to, I think that's crap.
- 15:22The reason why we go, we love it and the fans like watching it because it's frigging exciting.
- 15:26Yeah.
- 15:26And that adrenaline rush.
- 15:28We all raced in the Middle East and it was just like...
- 15:31or at Talon Bend when the walls are so far away, you don't get any sense of speed.
- 15:35It's not fun.
- 15:36Like you have a massive moment, you drive off in the grass and come back, but there, it's cool when you get punished.
- 15:41Like it's not cool for the teams, but it's such a rush and it does sort the men from the boys and over the race to be consistent.
- 15:49And then in those high pressure situations, like both of you guys were in to be able to nail it every lap through our qualifying practice into the race with all that pressure.
- 15:58It's...
- 15:59what this whole championship's all about.
- 16:01And I think if they opened it up or changed it, it would be crap.
- 16:04Oh, yeah.
- 16:06I mean, you'd have to change every corner at Bathurst.
- 16:08Yeah.
- 16:09Like, you know, there's obviously...
- 16:11I think it's more just like two guys obviously didn't pass the concussion test.
- 16:15I think that's obviously what raised it.
- 16:16They did that years ago.
- 16:17How many guys wouldn't do it?
- 16:18Yeah, but I can't even pass that on a good day.
- 16:21I'm struggling to write my name, let alone anything else.
- 16:24Yeah, no, that was...
- 16:26It was a mega weekend.
- 16:27But then on Sunday with Jackson as well, that was right in front of me too.
- 16:31That was big.
- 16:32That was big.
- 16:33A lot of stuff torn up.
- 16:35And for Team 18 to have come out of Bathurst with that chassis written off, then that thing is destroyed again.
- 16:42I don't understand.
- 16:42What's up with people?
- 16:43Like, obviously, supercars can tap into our mic when we don't press the radio button.
- 16:48They can still get our audio.
- 16:51What's up with people yelling during crashes?
- 16:54I just tense up.
- 16:54You had this debate last night about it.
- 16:56I just tense up, and I'm like...
- 16:58Like, I don't even say anything.
- 17:00But how's Reynolds at Bathurst and there?
- 17:03Like half-talker coaching himself.
- 17:04Yeah, coaching himself through the – and then pain.
- 17:06Pain, you know, is like, oh, shit, like going into the fence.
- 17:09And I'm like, I don't say a single thing.
- 17:11I might get a grunt as you hit the wall.
- 17:13They don't want to show that audio.
- 17:17No, no, no.
- 17:18But that was pretty funny.
- 17:20Reynolds down the hill, like –
- 17:22I didn't terribly crash, one of my great mates.
- 17:24But when they kept showing me that, like, and I just could not laugh.
- 17:27I'm like, what is this?
- 17:29Like, how is he just, you know?
- 17:31What did he say on Sunday at Adelaide?
- 17:34It was like, oh, shit.
- 17:35Yeah.
- 17:36Oh, whoa, whoa.
- 17:37Yeah.
- 17:37And then afterwards you could see he was just a bit winded.
- 17:41I don't know.
- 17:41I think it's, yeah, it's funny.
- 17:43But, yeah, I never really talked.
- 17:44But they used to say Cedar used to talk to himself the whole way around and be like, come on, mate, get on the gas, get on it, and talk to himself, which would have been pretty funny.
- 17:52But, yeah, for me...
- 17:54I'm too busy trying to save it.
- 17:55Even with three wheels on it, I still think I've got it.
- 17:58Yeah.
- 17:58Saturday's race sounds, you know, probably from our position, you can see why we're probably a bit biased, but I'm glad they left the quali and didn't run it...
- 18:08Sorry, Friday, and didn't run it on Saturday.
- 18:10Everyone had a chance to do a lap.
- 18:11Everyone had a chance.
- 18:12These guys decided to row tyres and all of that.
- 18:14Everyone had a chance to do a lap.
- 18:16But what about the shake-up of the field?
- 18:18Like, Saturday's race was pretty good, I reckon.
- 18:20There was a lot of passing.
- 18:21Obviously, Sunday's was better, but...
- 18:23I reckon it was good that they didn't run quali again on Saturday.
- 18:28We can all sit here and say that.
- 18:30Yeah, I can probably agree.
- 18:31If someone else, obviously, I'd been pissed off too.
- 18:36Yeah.
- 18:36But I totally get it from the entertainment point of view.
- 18:39You've got all the big guys down the back.
- 18:43Sunday was literally like you could tell everyone had just taken their gloves off for Sunday's race.
- 18:47Like I got turned around.
- 18:48Every two corners Andrew's like on the radio, he's like, yeah, car in the fence, yellow flags up ahead.
- 18:54And I'm like, what is going on in this race?
- 18:55Did you hear Matty Payne ran into the tow vehicle?
- 18:58No.
- 18:59What?
- 18:59Yeah.
- 19:00So he plucked reverse, they're pulling him out and he got reverse and backed back into the tow truck.
- 19:06And that's why his wing was all bent up.
- 19:08No.
- 19:08Because he backed into it, hit it, and then drove off.
- 19:14Oh God, that is funny.
- 19:14Yeah, there was, like I was the same.
- 19:16I was coming around, I'm like, oh, there's another one.
- 19:18There's another one.
- 19:18Even like the Waters one.
- 19:20The Waters and Cooper Murray, it just didn't look.
- 19:23What was Cooper Murray?
- 19:24It looked like he turned just exit stage left, like just turned left into the wall.
- 19:27You just see him like get that little curb, like a little jump and just into the fence.
- 19:31And you're like, how did that even happen?
- 19:33Like must have interlocked wheels perfectly.
- 19:35I don't know what happened, but it was the funniest crash I think I've ever watched.
- 19:39I was like, what went on there?
- 19:40Yeah, and then I was racing with Wood and we were banging doors and we come out with Andre and Cam and that whole little shit show was happening.
- 19:49And you could just, as we come into the last corner, I could just see Woody coming in, dragging the front corner.
- 19:54So I just like plucked it back to first, hooked on the inside and they were all just like this big swarm of crap.
- 19:59And I was just laughing at myself.
- 20:00And then Cam's come out flashing me with the lights.
- 20:04But yeah, there was plenty of stuff going on.
- 20:07That's the worst one part about that track is when you rejoin, you're coming out of the pits and you're on cold tires and someone's on warm tires and you're trying to get through the first chicane, you're understeering, you're nearly through the gravel.
- 20:18How's the start with old Chaz just jumped that gravel trap?
- 20:22Yeah.
- 20:22When you guys were side by side, I was like, oh, this is going to end badly.
- 20:26Apparently I didn't leave him room was why I got let through.
- 20:31He'd made up for it later.
- 20:32Yeah, that's right.
- 20:34Nobody goes around there.
- 20:35It's a hard one though, isn't it?
- 20:36Yeah.
- 20:37I know it's always been talked about, like pole position, because if you can go through, like, it's just a hard one.
- 20:43Second wins now.
- 20:45That's the truth of it.
- 20:45If you're second on the grid.
- 20:47There.
- 20:47Yeah.
- 20:48If you're second on the grid, like, unless you go in so hard as first and put him in the fence nearly.
- 20:53Well, I went in deep.
- 20:55I'm like, oh, I'm going in.
- 20:57And then he's just like, he's gone like half a card pass.
- 21:00I'm like, holy.
- 21:01And then, like, we've both obviously hit the curb.
- 21:04I did the same thing behind it with Randall.
- 21:05I thought, you know, I'll get around the outside there.
- 21:07Which side of the year?
- 21:08Outside?
- 21:08Outside.
- 21:09To be honest, when I'm in that, which it hasn't been for a while, but you just gas it up.
- 21:13You're going through.
- 21:14Yeah.
- 21:14Yeah.
- 21:15It's like the first chicane at Gold Coast.
- 21:18Everyone's like, oh, I'll pretend to try and go through.
- 21:20Oh, I'll just go.
- 21:22Yeah.
- 21:22Gold Coast.
- 21:23Matty Payne just drives around the outside of me through and doesn't even get a penalty.
- 21:26That was right in front of me.
- 21:27Yeah.
- 21:27What was that about?
- 21:28I don't know.
- 21:29I do like, though, like Gold Coast's, like, staggered grid.
- 21:33Maybe it's not as cool, but, like, I kind of like it when it's just...
- 21:36It's still extremely close, but you're, like, lying.
- 21:39Because I think, you know, you want to...
- 21:43Do you guys have start races?
- 21:44Like, every other... Like, we... Like, Aaron and I, we're not going to win the race, so we just have our own little start race.
- 21:51Like, 0 to 100.
- 21:52Do you guys... Yeah.
- 21:53Every... Not like... We used to have it a lot more with me and Brodie last year.
- 21:57Like, it used to be, like, oh, I got you all the time.
- 22:00But, like, they probably don't send it out.
- 22:02They'll tell us at T8.
- 22:03But, like...
- 22:04I felt like Sunday, I got a mega start on Sunday, and I was like, yeah, I had to have blown the doors off Randall.
- 22:10And then he's right there, nearly beating me off the start.
- 22:12I'm like, God, he must have been pretty good.
- 22:14We got pretty close to you guys, but the front six were so even on the Sunday.
- 22:19Me and Shane went through a pit.
- 22:21We were both terrible.
- 22:22We had the worst starts to the grid, so we'd always like whoever won.
- 22:24Shane would always have a bad one.
- 22:26Yeah, he was a bit of a shocker at starts.
- 22:29Do you... Oh, okay, you're probably not going to tell me, but...
- 22:33I was just going to say for the start, do you hold a throttle?
- 22:36Like Garth used to start with like next to no throttle, like 20%.
- 22:40And just ramp it.
- 22:41Yeah, and ramp it.
- 22:42Where I'm the opposite, I'm like, fuck, I'd rather it's a wheel spin.
- 22:45and modulate it on the clutch then for it to stall?
- 22:48I'd rather just be consistent on the throttle at a percentage so that I don't have to modulate it because you've got too much going on then.
- 22:54Are you not slipping the clutch enough?
- 22:57Are you going too much gas?
- 22:58If you just hold it consistent, then you just work it out with the clutch from there, how much you slip it to how much wheel spin you get.
- 23:03But if you're going from third...
- 23:07Sorry, 60%, 70%.
- 23:09Yeah.
- 23:10If you go from like, you know, if you go from whatever.
- 23:13We'll just wind up that level and get that record.
- 23:15You know, let's say 20%.
- 23:17If you go from 20% straight to 70%, how can you modulate the wheel spin?
- 23:21I don't.
- 23:22Yeah, that's me.
- 23:22I'm the same.
- 23:23That's why I hold a throttle percentage.
- 23:25Yeah.
- 23:26But always, no matter, as soon as there's this little flinch, I've worked out it's like 7%.
- 23:32Whatever I set it at, I always go 7%.
- 23:34Yeah, that's right.
- 23:35I used to get on it, you get a report through.
- 23:38I'd get one and I'm like, mate, that's not my start percentage.
- 23:41And they're like, yeah, that's when you take off.
- 23:42I'm like, yeah, that's because I've moved like 10%.
- 23:46You have your little moment.
- 23:47Starts are always hard.
- 23:48They hold the lights for longer and you start getting nervous.
- 23:50You know how you get on your bite point or something and then you're like, oh, the lights aren't going out.
- 23:53This isn't good.
- 23:55I don't hold.
- 23:56I'll find.
- 23:57And I'm like, go back.
- 23:58Yeah, yeah.
- 23:59Yeah, you have to now, I reckon.
- 24:00Aaron, team mate's like, I'm like.
- 24:04Chaz has just squatted that.
- 24:06He's like on the deck, nearly.
- 24:08Yeah.
- 24:08Anyway.
- 24:09What do you reckon?
- 24:11You know, a few send-offs on the weekend, Frosty and obviously Slade doing the walk-up pit lane.
- 24:15What do you reckon?
- 24:16Yeah.
- 24:18I think it was cool.
- 24:19I think it was...
- 24:21I don't know why Slady said that he didn't feel that he was worthy of it.
- 24:24The guy's been in the championship forever.
- 24:25He's a mad dog, Slady.
- 24:27I think he definitely 100% should have walked down beside Mark.
- 24:32They've both been amazing for our sport, good characters, Winterbottom with all that frosty stuff and the championships and Bathurst wins and all that sort of stuff.
- 24:42I think they've given so much, and it was cool.
- 24:44It was cool to see that.
- 24:46It's unusual they ran into each other.
- 24:47How funny was that at the gala?
- 24:49Yeah.
- 24:50How funny is that?
- 24:50And he's like, that was supposed to be golding.
- 24:53Sorry, Matt, I didn't realise you.
- 24:54I thought it was golding.
- 24:55That's awesome.
- 24:55Yeah, not I accidentally sent you.
- 24:57Yeah, I sent you, but it was the wrong person.
- 24:59Yeah, I was supposed to get your teammate back.
- 25:00But I don't know, what did you guys think?
- 25:03I thought it sounded at the start, I was like, oh, this is a bit weird.
- 25:05But then when it was in the moment, I thought it was real fitting.
- 25:08Like as in when Sladey got to me and Frosty got to me, I was like, oh, this is pretty cool.
- 25:12Because you guys wouldn't have been in it when Lowndes did his, would you?
- 25:16No.
- 25:16I don't think I've ever seen someone actually do a send-off yet.
- 25:19No.
- 25:19Because with Lowndes, they did the same thing and it was, you know, everyone cheered and clapped and shook hands and stuff and then he drove to the grid first and whatever.
- 25:27It was pretty cool.
- 25:28That's pretty cool.
- 25:29Yeah.
- 25:29No, they have been pretty... You know, we're going to miss Slady.
- 25:32You know, I wanted to see some of the gala antics again, but he's obviously pulled it back a bit.
- 25:36I think Chaz may have got that medal this year.
- 25:39That was a bounce back, wasn't it?
- 25:41I don't know how he recovered.
- 25:43I didn't see him.
- 25:44Oh, my God.
- 25:44At the gala, like, he actually, you know, spoke well in that.
- 25:47Yeah, was like a different person.
- 25:49I think he's good at it.
- 25:50We have to tell the people.
- 25:51So for the people listening at home, Chaz had a pretty big driver's lunch and might have had a few too many, you know...
- 25:58And, yeah, he was pretty drunk by then, but he bounced back and did some good speeches, and he won everything.
- 26:03What's up with him, you know, just winning all the awards?
- 26:06Well, I mean, you did win the driver's championship, mate.
- 26:09Yeah.
- 26:10But I thought it was weird.
- 26:11I reckon they should have, like, at least got Waters up for the pole position one, because that's a good one.
- 26:16I think that should have had more than just something at the track.
- 26:20Yeah, I'm one for like, you know, everyone's like, yeah, we just want to get through the gala.
- 26:23But like if you win, like I think instead of doing some at the track, like we're there, we've all stayed, we've put the effort in.
- 26:30Like if you won an award, like a big award like that, or like last year they didn't do the team's championship or the year before or something like that, I think that stuff needs to be recognised.
- 26:39Even someone said like, oh, the Bathurst guys should have got up.
- 26:43I think the Bathurst guys did get up last year, didn't they?
- 26:45Wasn't that a thing?
- 26:47They changed it this year.
- 26:48I'm not sure.
- 26:50I'm pretty fuzzy by that time in the night.
- 26:52Yeah.
- 26:53Yeah.
- 26:53You had a good gala, actually.
- 26:55Mate, I was the sweetest guy in there.
- 26:56You were pretty loose, actually.
- 26:56Yeah.
- 26:57I had a great time.
- 26:58Zara, my daughter, came.
- 26:59Yeah, I just...
- 27:01Got on it, had a good time.
- 27:02It was fun.
- 27:03Yeah.
- 27:03I'm the guy on the dance floor just sweating it up, getting in.
- 27:06Yeah, shirts, unbuttoned a few.
- 27:07My Sunday night.
- 27:08The time was sort of all worse.
- 27:10I couldn't recover from my Sunday night.
- 27:12Mitch got me up at 6 a.m.
- 27:14I think, you know, it was a late finish as well.
- 27:16And then I'd just stuff all day.
- 27:19I can have a photo of you laying on the ground in your hotel in front of your partner.
- 27:23Was it Monday morning?
- 27:24That was so good.
- 27:27You had your team gear on still.
- 27:29It was awesome.
- 27:30I was broken, eh?
- 27:31I was like, oh, and I had to go do Sunrise.
- 27:33And I did all right for Sunrise, you know.
- 27:36Was that the one where you said you almost vomited or something?
- 27:39Oh, I just had a bit of a moment to myself during the interview.
- 27:43But that was fun, yeah.
- 27:45I had a good time.
- 27:45What did we do?
- 27:46We had a Red Bull afterparty.
- 27:47A few of my mates came down.
- 27:48The whole of Toowoomba was there pretty much.
- 27:50We went to a Red Bull afterparty and we knew no one.
- 27:52They were just all the people from Toowoomba.
- 27:54Yeah.
- 27:54And my mates from Toowoomba had a very good time.
- 27:56It was quite funny.
- 27:57We just had a lot of fun and then went out after.
- 28:00One nearly had a big incident.
- 28:02Yeah, yeah, it was pretty fun.
- 28:03Yeah, no, it was good.
- 28:04It was a good night.
- 28:05Sunday night was awesome.
- 28:06And then, yeah, I just couldn't back up Monday.
- 28:08I was like, yeah, I'm busted.
- 28:09I did a bunch of interviews and that.
- 28:11And then I'm like, no, I went home from the gala about 10.30.
- 28:14Oh, you did?
- 28:15Yeah, I had big plans.
- 28:17And then I was 10.30.
- 28:18I'm like, no, I'm done.
- 28:20So what happens now with you two?
- 28:23What's the rest of the year?
- 28:24We're pretty much done.
- 28:25I mean, we got today and in a couple of days our Christmas party and then I'm checking out.
- 28:30Yeah.
- 28:31Put the phone down.
- 28:32Is it weird being able to, sorry to jump in, but you don't drink?
- 28:35No.
- 28:35Am I correct?
- 28:36So is it funny seeing everyone at the gala just completely spastic and you're just sobering?
- 28:43It's not too bad.
- 28:44I can still go out and everyone's like, oh, how many drinks you had?
- 28:47If in the right environment, I can still have a really good time.
- 28:51No one needs to drink to have a good time, but I'm just meaning like is it a funny scene everyone?
- 28:56And you remember everything.
- 28:58Exactly.
- 28:58Everyone's like grabbing you to dance.
- 29:00I'm like, I don't know.
- 29:01I don't want to look like that right now.
- 29:04I can't bring myself to doing that completely sober.
- 29:07I have said to him a couple of times like,
- 29:10I don't know how he puts up with me.
- 29:11When he comes out till 3am and I've been drinking, it's like I couldn't put up with myself if I was sober.
- 29:17And I'm like, I don't know how he doesn't just go, no, you're annoying me.
- 29:20He might just tie you up and put you in the corner.
- 29:22You don't know.
- 29:23Yeah, maybe I just don't know, but I just don't know how you do it.
- 29:26Yeah, I can still like, when we went out in NZ and that, I can still have a good time.
- 29:31Yeah, in NZ, we get home and we go out for brekkie.
- 29:36We got home maybe 3.30.
- 29:38We go out for brekkie and Brock's like, oh, yeah, I'm dusty.
- 29:40I'm like... Wow, that wasn't the exact words, but...
- 29:43He was like, oh, I'm so tired.
- 29:46I'm there and I'm looking at him and I'm like, you didn't just say that, did you?
- 29:49I'm busted.
- 29:52Mate, I need my sleep.
- 29:53I struggle.
- 29:54Yeah.
- 30:01So is there anything through the year that no one knows about that was pretty funny that happened with you guys?
- 30:08The Darwin After.
- 30:09The Darwin After.
- 30:10Yeah, no, we won't talk about that.
- 30:12Oh, what happened there?
- 30:13What's going on?
- 30:13It's just, Will can dance pretty much.
- 30:16He can pull out some good moves.
- 30:17I can.
- 30:18He can't dance, so when he does, it's funny.
- 30:21Yeah, yeah.
- 30:21That was a certain move.
- 30:23I don't think so.
- 30:24I think it was actually, it was nothing too crazy.
- 30:27Did you guys come to blow, not blow, punch up, but was there any arguments this year about anything?
- 30:32Only probably the Tazzy one was a bit tense.
- 30:34Yeah.
- 30:35When I put a block on Brock.
- 30:38Through a joint bow at Brock.
- 30:40Yeah, that's right.
- 30:42Yeah, but I don't think so.
- 30:43Anything apart from that?
- 30:44No.
- 30:45I feel like our engineers were, well, not even Brock's engineer, but like our engineers, because back there, like, you know, you're obviously any team running at that level.
- 30:53You have some team orders, and then you always have to sort of put your case forward from the engineer as to why, you know, oh, I should have let him pass or what.
- 31:02So I feel like we don't have the arguments.
- 31:04You know what I mean?
- 31:05We're just listening.
- 31:06do seem to race each other pretty well.
- 31:09Like, it's not sort of like one of you catches the other and then the team's like, oh, right, shut it down and you guys just drive behind each other.
- 31:16You still have a crack at each other.
- 31:17We had a little bit of that at the start of the year.
- 31:19Like, we were in a pretty good position at the start of the year.
- 31:21I think we won the first five or so races.
- 31:23And, like, at AGP there was, like, the big, like, oh, my God, are your tyres going to blow up sort of thing.
- 31:29So, like, there was a few races at the start of the year where it's like, don't put too much pressure on it.
- 31:33But, like, when we got to Taupo, like...
- 31:35They're just like, yeah, boys, like, you know the rules.
- 31:37Like, if we touch, we get in a lot of trouble.
- 31:39They're like, just go for it.
- 31:41Will run into me a few times.
- 31:42No, I'm joking.
- 31:43You back-tested me.
- 31:45But to let it off.
- 31:47And it was the same Adelaide.
- 31:48Like, we didn't have door-to-door racing.
- 31:51So who is it that pulls you through?
- 31:52Is it the goat or?
- 31:54Nah.
- 31:55Dado is like the one that sits down to like, look, you boys know the rules, like don't run into each other, but race hard sort of thing.
- 32:03So it's good when we're in a position where we're out front like Taupo and we had a gap and they're just like, you guys can sort it out, don't do anything silly.
- 32:10But the thing is you learn in that situation how many times you run into someone to pass them.
- 32:15Yeah, because you can't.
- 32:17I could have passed this guy if it wasn't my teammate 10 laps ago.
- 32:19You just rolled up and doored him.
- 32:20If that was someone else at Taupo, it would have been done in one lap and it would have just been like, oh.
- 32:25Yeah.
- 32:25We're like, oh, my God.
- 32:27That back corner, like the hairpin at Taupo, you'd just get underneath him a bit, a few taps and burn the tyres off and you'd be fine.
- 32:33And I'm like, this is really hard.
- 32:34I can't even hit him.
- 32:35What am I going to do here?
- 32:36Just hope he makes a mistake.
- 32:38Yeah, that's right.
- 32:40But, yeah, it was a good year.
- 32:42I don't think there was anything.
- 32:44Get along well.
- 32:44It's all been pretty good, really.
- 32:47Was there anything that surprised either of you through the year with someone's performance or, you know, something that went on?
- 32:54In our team or in general?
- 32:55Oh, just in general.
- 32:56Your Townsville Equality shootout?
- 32:57Oh, that was cracking.
- 32:58Mate, you nearly went to the top.
- 32:59Oh, I thought I was on for a second there.
- 33:01It's the one time all year the car hooked up.
- 33:06I'm trying to think if anyone did anything good throughout the year that was surprising.
- 33:12Like any cracking moves you pulled on someone or someone got over you and you're like, oh.
- 33:17You always have good ones.
- 33:18You know, like I feel like there's always some, you pull some good moves, but I don't think there's...
- 33:24Nothing that's jumped out.
- 33:25I don't think so.
- 33:26I just hate it when someone gets you with a really good move and you're like, oh...
- 33:30that's it.
- 33:31I'm pretty much their bitch now until they get the telephoto.
- 33:34I've got to get them back.
- 33:35They cross you over or something.
- 33:37You're like, I should have known they were going to do that.
- 33:39How did they get me?
- 33:40But I reckon there's definitely some guys you have to be a little bit more.
- 33:44You know coming up on you, JC's not making it easy every time.
- 33:47I pretty much put the blinker on on Sunday, mate.
- 33:49Calm down.
- 33:50I was like, go by, buddy.
- 33:52Win the championship.
- 33:53Do a burnout.
- 33:54Yeah.
- 33:56You were nice.
- 33:56But then there's like other people, like obviously what Chas did on Sunday, like just going to make it hard and it's going to be interesting and the racing is going to be, you know, a difficult pass.
- 34:07But, yeah, nothing that stands out so much.
- 34:10What about you?
- 34:11Cool stuff.
- 34:15I don't know.
- 34:16I probably thought the...
- 34:19Waters was going to be stronger as a team through this year.
- 34:22I thought they would have featured a bit heavier.
- 34:24I thought of something.
- 34:25What, go?
- 34:25Remember him and Payne at Grand Prix when Waters had gone and sprayed him in the door?
- 34:29That was good.
- 34:30That was pretty funny.
- 34:31That was a decent shun as well.
- 34:32And then Ned did the promo the next day.
- 34:35Oh, yeah, with the whiskey.
- 34:37Yeah.
- 34:37And now Cam has his own whiskey.
- 34:38Yeah.
- 34:39I thought that was funny.
- 34:39I wonder if they make it.
- 34:41They don't.
- 34:41I asked him and I didn't even calculate it through my head.
- 34:44Like they had to go at him.
- 34:45But that was pretty funny.
- 34:48There wasn't any other scraps, was there?
- 34:50Not really.
- 34:50What was it like working with Mr. Pye?
- 34:53Yeah, no.
- 34:53Very outspoken.
- 34:55Yeah, obviously he's doing his podcast, you know.
- 34:57Why are you looking at me?
- 34:59Why are you looking at me?
- 35:00What are you guys laughing for?
- 35:02They can see your eyes, mate.
- 35:05No, you can't.
- 35:05I'm not sure, to be honest.
- 35:07He was good to work with.
- 35:08He did a fantastic job.
- 35:09I did a few years with him.
- 35:10Yeah, yeah, did a fantastic job all season round, apart from Thursday at Bathurst, obviously.
- 35:15Oh, yeah, actually.
- 35:17No, I'm only joking.
- 35:18But no, the rest of the time really fast.
- 35:21Obviously, the podcast started doing it.
- 35:22He's gained some followers off that, though.
- 35:24That has been massive.
- 35:25Like, you know, just the amount of people throughout.
- 35:30the rounds that came up.
- 35:31And I guess he sort of dragged the, I would say the added in fans and all of those fans that, you know, sort of have a bit of a, not a problem with supercars, but you know, they, they want changes.
- 35:42And I guess that's, that's what the podcast about.
- 35:44He's very outspoken.
- 35:45I feel like people either love the podcast or,
- 35:48Don't like the podcast is what I've liked.
- 35:50I think it's cool, like, Shane.
- 35:52Like, you've seen Shane and a lot of people wouldn't have seen him in that way.
- 35:56Like, we've all seen Shane in that open environment where he can say what he wants and that.
- 36:00But it's like, you enjoy watching the podcast and I'm sure everyone's loving it where, like, everyone can just speak freely because they've got nothing holding their back, which is good.
- 36:07I think Scott's done what the sport kind of needed, though, in a way, and hopefully more people do it, is that, you know, we have these three-week breaks and there's nothing...
- 36:15you know, to listen to, to watch or anything like that for it.
- 36:19So, you know, they can log on and listen to the debrief when they want to think about motorsport and watch motorsport.
- 36:25And, yeah, I think that more drivers should probably do a podcast that people can get that fix when we're having our weekends off.
- 36:33Well, we're doing one now.
- 36:34True.
- 36:35And with the GOAT, again, by the time around, he let you qualify this year?
- 36:39Yeah, he did let me qualify this year.
- 36:41Before you're rolling, you're like, mate, I'm driving this thing all year.
- 36:45Hey, this is my car now.
- 36:46I don't care how many championships you've won.
- 36:48I wanted to ask it, but I haven't had the balls.
- 36:50How did that come about that year?
- 36:52So I went out in the wet and I was terrible at Bathurst.
- 36:56I nearly won.
- 36:57Well, I shouldn't say nearly won.
- 36:58I was like battling with Shane and Cam at Tail and Ben in the wet the weekend before and then go to Bathurst and I was terrible.
- 37:03And then he goes out and literally the first lap he goes P2.
- 37:07Yeah, it was probably dry.
- 37:08And I'm like, I'm like, and then I think the team went to put me back out or something like that.
- 37:13And anyway, it got to quali and they're like, everyone's like, oh, so like, did we put Jamie in?
- 37:19And I'm like, guys, I honestly don't care.
- 37:21But then we qualified 14th anyway.
- 37:22I was about to say that.
- 37:23I'm like, I probably should have just done it.
- 37:24You know, like.
- 37:25Who made the call?
- 37:26Who told you, yeah, he's... No, I... Like, everyone brought it up.
- 37:31Like, the team sort of brought it up.
- 37:32Like, oh, what do you think about?
- 37:33And I'm like, do it.
- 37:35Like, literally, I didn't care.
- 37:37Like, I just wanted to win the race.
- 37:38You know, you go in there to win the race.
- 37:40Like, there was zero ego.
- 37:42Very mature of you, Brock.
- 37:44But I remember sitting in the garage, in the truck, and I'd watch it on my phone.
- 37:48I didn't want to walk out.
- 37:48When you went 14th, you were just like...
- 37:50But then like, you obviously see the TV and they're like, oh my God, Jamie, Jamie, Winkup's in his suit.
- 37:57And then my phone just flooded and everyone's like, everyone had their opinion on it.
- 38:00But literally I was there to win.
- 38:02Yeah.
- 38:02I was there trying to do the best I could.
- 38:03And I thought he'd do that.
- 38:05But...
- 38:06I'd be happy to let him qualify this year.
- 38:08I think he'd still put it in the tent.
- 38:10It does go pretty well.
- 38:10He's so fast.
- 38:11You go to a test day and you literally have to be on your game.
- 38:14Otherwise, he's... You're talking smack.
- 38:16He's like, shut up or I'm going to get in and go fast.
- 38:19Yeah.
- 38:20He's like, you did a shit job.
- 38:21No, I'm here.
- 38:22No, but literally at the test day, we were doing back-to-back runs and that.
- 38:26And, man, I was wheeling this thing.
- 38:28And I'd get in by a few hundreds.
- 38:30And I'm like...
- 38:31And Marty's come on the radio and he's like, yeah, you've still got your job just.
- 38:36Like, you know, we were winding each other up.
- 38:38It was pretty funny.
- 38:39Yeah.
- 38:39But yeah, he still goes good.
- 38:41He could still be doing it.
- 38:42But is he like Tim?
- 38:43Whenever Tim drives my car, it's like fresh tyres.
- 38:46Yeah.
- 38:47Tim won't drive.
- 38:47No.
- 38:48That's so funny.
- 38:49Like, at ride days and stuff, he gets in, he gets in, it's like... Tyes on.
- 38:52Yeah.
- 38:53You're all set in the bills.
- 38:54Yeah.
- 38:55Then he goes out.
- 38:56And once it gets a bit squirrely, the tyres are going, he's out, he's done.
- 38:59It's funny, like, at Thursday practice at Bathurst, we're like, yeah, let's focus on a race car and that.
- 39:04And Jamie goes out and, like, laser heated it.
- 39:06He goes P1 in the session and Will comes in and he's like...
- 39:10I think you'll like to him.
- 39:11I'm all like, were you like pushing then or was that like race runs?
- 39:14And he's like, mate, that was my quality sim for the weekend.
- 39:16Like I was flat out.
- 39:17Yeah, well, we had this plan or I thought we had this plan in the trailer that these co-drivers are going to do a race run and we'd know.
- 39:23And then, yeah, he's just gone like a second and a half quicker than Scott.
- 39:26And I'm like...
- 39:27what the hell?
- 39:27And then I've gone over it.
- 39:28Is that why Scott crashed?
- 39:29You sort of pushed too hard.
- 39:30I actually said to Andrew, get on the radio and tell him to get going.
- 39:33And then he crashed.
- 39:33So it was your fault.
- 39:34I'm like, oh, I feel bad.
- 39:37Scott will even say the truth.
- 39:38He's like, yeah, he's got on.
- 39:39He's like, yeah, Jamie's a second quicker.
- 39:40And then two minutes later, bro, Scott.
- 39:43So Scott was actually probably doing really good times, to be honest.
- 39:47But Jamie just, he literally looks at that session.
- 39:50Yep, I'm laying down a heater.
- 39:51This is my quality.
- 39:52And he was fast.
- 39:54But, yeah.
- 39:54He's still got it.
- 39:56Oh, he still has.
- 39:58He'd be there for as long as he wants, I think, nearly.
- 40:00So moving along a little, you've worked closely with Brodie and all those years at Erebus and whatever.
- 40:09How do you reckon it's going to go with him at DJR, is it?
- 40:12Because they're taking a lot of the people out of there, haven't they?
- 40:15Yeah.
- 40:16I reckon, obviously, well, I think if they bring those guys in, they've got to give them free range and do what they want, which I'm sure they're going to.
- 40:22So have they got rid of all their engineers?
- 40:24At Erebus?
- 40:25No, at both.
- 40:26At DJR?
- 40:26Yeah.
- 40:27I think so, yeah.
- 40:28I think both.
- 40:29Like, DJR.
- 40:30I think Perry's been announced that he's going to supercars.
- 40:32Is that right?
- 40:33Yeah.
- 40:33What about, is it Richard at... Richard.
- 40:35Where's he going?
- 40:36I don't know.
- 40:36Where is he going?
- 40:37Don't we?
- 40:38Oh, right.
- 40:38Is it so...
- 40:40You got something to break?
- 40:41Well, I know.
- 40:42Oh, right.
- 40:42Do you?
- 40:43No, we don't.
- 40:44I've had whispers, but anyway.
- 40:46Where was the whisper I can confirm or deny?
- 40:49From you.
- 40:50I didn't tell anyone.
- 40:52But, yeah, what do you reckon it's going to be like?
- 40:53Because it's going to be quite a different environment for him.
- 40:56It's going to change a lot, isn't it?
- 40:58I think, you know, it's like Chas went to Walkinshaw and everyone said, oh, you know, go on there.
- 41:02You know, everyone wanted him at the time to go to Penske or Triple Eight and he's performed at a team.
- 41:07He's a good driver.
- 41:08I think that he'll, you know, I think Brody's got the engineers he needs.
- 41:12That's why he's taken them and I think he's, you know, on a bit of a high right now still.
- 41:16He's won Bathurst.
- 41:17I think...
- 41:19I think he's still a contender.
- 41:19But he was quick at the end of the year, wasn't he?
- 41:21Yeah, he was quick.
- 41:23And, yeah, it was...
- 41:25I think he's a contender for the top four at the end of next year.
- 41:28Oh, 100%.
- 41:29Yeah.
- 41:29Yeah, no, like, speed's never a question with him, and I think he's...
- 41:34He seems like he's quite the engineer also.
- 41:36Yeah.
- 41:37But, yeah, it'd just be an interesting dynamic.
- 41:39I think it's probably better that it's not the Penske way anymore.
- 41:43I think that's probably that loosened up a little.
- 41:45I hope they make him tuck his shirt in and do all that.
- 41:48No, no.
- 41:50What's it called?
- 41:50The barrel hat or bowl hat or whatever the hair is.
- 41:52Bucket hat.
- 41:53Has to have a tidy haircut.
- 41:55Can't shave his head every three rounds or something.
- 41:58Yeah.
- 41:59But no, I think that should be an interesting dynamic.
- 42:01Cool story next year.
- 42:02Like, you know, they haven't had the best couple of years from where they've been.
- 42:05It'll be like, can they bring it back to the front?
- 42:07Hmm.
- 42:09Yeah.
- 42:09Yeah.
- 42:10Anyone else do you think is going to be – like, why can't WIU and Chas get it together?
- 42:16Like, you guys are – I don't know.
- 42:17I think they have.
- 42:18No, but like I mean for a championship because how many years has he been in a long time?
- 42:24I feel like they made a few silly errors towards the back end of the year.
- 42:27Yeah.
- 42:28From a team point of view, maybe.
- 42:32I think it's more like the round like, you know, obviously he struggled at Darwin, but then like they smoked us for a few rounds like Townsville and Sydney.
- 42:39They were like stupid rocks and the next weekend we rolled at Darwin and it's not weird.
- 42:43Sydney was ridiculous.
- 42:44He could do whatever strategy he wanted.
- 42:47They definitely found some good speed though this year.
- 42:49Like when they were shining, man, they were unbeatable.
- 42:52But there's just not the consistency.
- 42:53Like you guys, no matter where we go...
- 42:57you guys are quick like it doesn't matter where you go you guys are going to be there and there's no bogey tracks for you um and it seems like every other team sort of has a drama at one circuit or it's not good for them for whatever reason or they don't have the consistency um why do you you guys are so strong all year and you know whether they change drivers like you change take shane out and you roll in or jamie goes and you come in at
- 43:22It doesn't change.
- 43:23No matter what it is, it's 888-12 speed-wise.
- 43:27Do you put it down to the group back at Banjo or whatever it's called?
- 43:31Yeah, they're playing the Banjo.
- 43:35The crew's obviously amazing.
- 43:36You're looking at some of the guys.
- 43:38For myself coming in, looking at some of the key people that I've had for years, JJ, Dado, Gooey, all those guys that run their sections.
- 43:46If it's a workshop or the engineering, whatnot, they do...
- 43:50They do such an amazing job and they have great personnel from the engineers and everything there.
- 43:54But just procedures, I guess, and the way they set up the cars leading into the weekend, I guess, is a big part of why there's not bogey tracks.
- 44:03They have a philosophy behind how they set up the car each weekend.
- 44:07And I think we roll out of the trailer extremely competitive each one.
- 44:11Yeah, I think that's a big part of it.
- 44:13And yes, you're not chasing your tail.
- 44:15I feel like for so many years I was, you know, last year with Erebus, I didn't feel like we were chasing a tail.
- 44:20We'd make small changes and we'd be in the window each round.
- 44:23But I remember with Erebus, we were changing uprights back when you could.
- 44:26You were throwing a whole different setup in it over Saturday night for Sunday and you just never knew where you were at.
- 44:32You didn't know what change actually happened.
- 44:34made an improvement or because you threw 12 at it overnight to try and get somewhere where now I remember Andrew being like, oh, the cars are different and it's such a minimal change.
- 44:43It's a rear spring or something like that.
- 44:45So yeah.
- 44:46What was that spring?
- 44:47Yeah, I'm worried he's going to slip something up here.
- 44:49Yeah, yeah.
- 44:49I'm ready to jump in.
- 44:51I'll be in trouble.
- 44:5175 rear spring.
- 44:53He had a 70.
- 44:55Yeah, but that's right.
- 44:56So, yeah, I think they just roll the cars out so strong.
- 44:59The philosophy before you go there is so good that you don't have those bogey rounds.
- 45:03But my one for next year, Waters.
- 45:05I reckon Waters was...
- 45:07Since Taupo, he was solid.
- 45:09Like, I think he actually...
- 45:11He didn't beat me, but either... Had a good back end of the year.
- 45:14His back end of the year was nearly on par with mine.
- 45:17Like, it wasn't far off.
- 45:18So he was pretty strong from there on.
- 45:21So it's going to be interesting to see how everyone rolls out over Christmas.
- 45:26Because, like, what confused us most, we go to Bathurst first round, like, second quicker than everyone.
- 45:30Yeah.
- 45:30Yeah.
- 45:31Then you go to Bathurst with probably the same set-up, tyres and everything, and then you qualify fifth or sixth and you can't, you know, Brodie's up the road and that.
- 45:38So I think everyone just got on top of their cars a lot this year and got faster throughout the year and the competitiveness.
- 45:46I don't, you know, I might be talking it up, but I don't think the category has seen this amount of competitiveness.
- 45:51Like there's always different people up the front every weekend.
- 45:53Yeah, it has been pretty good.
- 45:55Mitch is into us.
- 45:56He wants us to get into, there's a mailbag there or something, read some exciting, a lot of questions.
- 46:04But yeah, I think, yeah, Cam was super strong.
- 46:08I thought he was going to be one to push you guys this year.
- 46:10He does an incredible job in qualifying.
- 46:12Yeah, fuck it.
- 46:14He can.
- 46:14They can lay a lap down.
- 46:16Yeah.
- 46:16He throws the heater down.
- 46:17I got a pretty good one.
- 46:18So who was the last man standing on Sunday night?
- 46:22Oh.
- 46:23Definitely you.
- 46:25I wasn't the last man out of our team, but I set a 3 a.m. curfew on myself because I knew I had the sunrise.
- 46:30So I left at 3 a.m. Was that like Queensland time?
- 46:36Yeah, yeah.
- 46:36So like 3 a.m. or whatever.
- 46:39Yeah, but yeah, got home.
- 46:41I was fine.
- 46:43I didn't even go out.
- 46:44Did you?
- 46:44No.
- 46:45I had to get my Zara flu in, so I got her, but damn, the next night.
- 46:49Yeah, you were probably last on the Monday night.
- 46:52Definitely the sweatiest.
- 46:55So this is from James for Will.
- 46:56What was it like coming home to Toowoomba to see so many fans?
- 47:00Yeah, that was pretty cool.
- 47:01I have, obviously I still work when I'm home and I have so many people come into the car yard and like, oh, you did a good job on the weekend, like throughout the year.
- 47:08And then when I won and saw a few people comment on Facebook, oh, you know, cool to see a Toowoomba person win, I was like, oh, we've got to do something for the fans.
- 47:15So I thought I'll...
- 47:17put on a bit of a day that fans can come out to the car and have a look at the supercar.
- 47:21I was disappointed you didn't get Todd there to spin those snags.
- 47:24Yeah, yeah.
- 47:26I even reminded him.
- 47:27I sent you a message.
- 47:28You did send me a message.
- 47:30No, Todd was booked out that day, I think, but couldn't get him.
- 47:34Has he been announced that he's going to DJs with?
- 47:38Surely he is.
- 47:39Well, you've just announced it.
- 47:41No, I said, has he?
- 47:41Well, yeah, but then you dropped the name.
- 47:44I don't know.
- 47:46I thought he was.
- 47:46There's a Speed Cafe article now.
- 47:48I'm sure we're all clutching it.
- 47:49Oh, is it?
- 47:50I'm sure.
- 47:51No, no, I don't think it has been announced.
- 47:53You would think he'd follow him there.
- 47:54You would think.
- 47:54All right.
- 47:56From Ebs, which rookie will be the one to watch in 2025?
- 47:59Kai Allen and Cooper Murray.
- 48:02Yeah.
- 48:03Which one?
- 48:04Do you want to put bets on who you think is going to finish higher?
- 48:07Is that...
- 48:08I don't know.
- 48:09Just who do we think is going to be the one to watch?
- 48:11I'm going to go...
- 48:11I'm going to get in...
- 48:12I don't know.
- 48:13I was pretty impressed with not Saturday on Coop, but Sunday.
- 48:16Coop is qualifying 12th or 13th.
- 48:20I thought that was...
- 48:21I'm going to go Coop.
- 48:22I think he's...
- 48:23But consistency, you've got to watch that.
- 48:26But I think he's got raw pace.
- 48:28He's got a bit of crazy eyes going on, doesn't he?
- 48:30Yeah.
- 48:30It was quite funny.
- 48:31In Saturday's race, I'm just, they're like, oh, don't worry, Cooper's six laps down, like, you know, and you're behind him.
- 48:37And then he just fences Frosty in front of me.
- 48:39And I'm like, all righty then.
- 48:41Oh, God.
- 48:43I've got the championship here.
- 48:44I'm like, get him, Cooper.
- 48:45Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 48:47Are you on the radio team?
- 48:48Yeah.
- 48:49Meow.
- 48:49Yeah.
- 48:50It was actually, the meow came from is that, you know how people like sometimes don't use pit?
- 48:56I said to my engineer as a joke on Sunday, I'm like, can you just meow at me to pit as a joke?
- 49:01And he's like, I'm not meowing.
- 49:02Like it was a total piss take.
- 49:04He wouldn't do it.
- 49:05It wasn't.
- 49:05But yeah, I'm going to go Cooper.
- 49:09You've probably raced both of them quite a bit.
- 49:11Yeah, I have.
- 49:14I really rate Kai.
- 49:15I think he's a guy that's going to be around for a long time, and I think he can put a championship together.
- 49:21I think Cooper's going to have a couple of standout races.
- 49:24It wouldn't surprise me if he polled it.
- 49:27He's capable.
- 49:28He's got the raw speed and that to poll it.
- 49:33Yeah, it depends how, I suppose, they fit into their environment.
- 49:36Like how Kai's going to go at Grove.
- 49:39They've got two young guys.
- 49:39I think Kai's going to be good.
- 49:41You'd say Kai would be more looked after than at Erebus with.
- 49:46Well, it's just how everyone fits into their environment.
- 49:50No, but, like, it's just how people, you know, are going to fit in.
- 49:53Like...
- 49:55Yeah, I think if they look after him, right, I think they'll go well.
- 50:00Kyle will be more consistent.
- 50:01Cooper will have the standouts.
- 50:02Yeah, I think so.
- 50:03Cooper will get on the podium or something.
- 50:05And Kyle will probably be further up in the championship, I think.
- 50:10Yeah, I said to Tim Edwards years ago that he should get Kaya because I remember him from karting and did really well.
- 50:16He's always been.
- 50:17Yeah, and he comes from a great family and, yeah, I think he presents really well.
- 50:24So, yeah, I think, like, Bob said, I reckon he's going to be a guy that's going to hang around for quite a while.
- 50:28Yeah.
- 50:28We got any more in here?
- 50:29Yeah, do you want to keep going?
- 50:30Yeah, let's ask a couple more.
- 50:32What have we got here?
- 50:35From Mungo Kitty.
- 50:38Oh.
- 50:39Meow.
- 50:40Thank you.
- 50:41Will, what would you offer me for my 2018 Subaru Forester?
- 50:47Oh, what's it worth?
- 50:48I've got to know the Ks.
- 50:49I'd just say $154,000.
- 50:50Oh, $154,000.
- 50:51It's getting high, though, 2018.
- 50:54No, it wouldn't be that many for 2018.
- 50:55I don't know.
- 50:56It could be from the bush.
- 50:57Is it an ex-hire car?
- 50:59What is it?
- 51:00I just don't have enough information, guys.
- 51:01Never raced or rallied.
- 51:02Yeah, yeah.
- 51:03But thank you.
- 51:04But I'll give you 10 because I know I'm safe.
- 51:06All right, done.
- 51:07Drop in to call cars galore and find out.
- 51:12Yeah, from Jacob.
- 51:13Are there any advantages or disadvantages with starting a year with a new chassis?
- 51:20No, everyone's so good at building it.
- 51:21You guys getting any new ones this year?
- 51:23Oh, you are, aren't you?
- 51:24Or one of you had one?
- 51:25No, one of us are.
- 51:26Oh, the champ.
- 51:28Do you just call it now?
- 51:29You're like, mate.
- 51:30Guess what number chassis it is.
- 51:31Look at the number on the side.
- 51:33Hey, sorry to jump around a bit here.
- 51:35We'll get back to the chassis number because I'm a bit excited, but I just thought something was funny.
- 51:39You know what it is.
- 51:40I don't know what it is, but something is funny.
- 51:42Now you don't have to run 87.
- 51:44Can you admit that it's a shit number?
- 51:46Oh.
- 51:49This is all the start of this year because Jamie sends me a message and Jamie goes like, hey, mate, this is your number for the year.
- 51:55And I'm like, oh, yeah, righto, like 87, whatever.
- 51:59Like I didn't think it was bad, didn't think it was good.
- 52:01You know, I'm like 87, that's fine.
- 52:03You know, they've just obviously won worse than Brock.
- 52:05They're happy just to put me as second driver straight away.
- 52:07No, I'm joking.
- 52:08Yeah.
- 52:09But then like everyone's just like sending me messages, all these drivers like Waters, you, Brody.
- 52:14Everyone's like, God, that's a shit number.
- 52:16What do you mean?
- 52:17What's wrong with the number?
- 52:18They paid me out for rounds about my number.
- 52:20So I didn't think 87 was too bad.
- 52:22Like I'm pretty keen to run it.
- 52:24Yeah, I actually, I like it now.
- 52:26Yeah, you don't have to go to 87.
- 52:29Yeah.
- 52:29So I actually like it now, 87, but yeah, we might be able to get away from it for a year.
- 52:35Back to whatever you were saying about your chassis number.
- 52:37Oh, my chassis number.
- 52:39We both wanted it this year.
- 52:41Triple 8.
- 52:42Take a guess.
- 52:42No, no, no, take a guess.
- 52:44No, one better than Triple 8.
- 52:46I didn't even know what number you guys would be up to.
- 52:47It's always the immature number.
- 52:48We're like Chassis 69.
- 52:50Oh, I did that too.
- 52:53So we're having a fight this year.
- 52:54It's like whoever beat each other in the championship, and I'm like, oh, so I've got to choose a name for it.
- 52:58Yeah.
- 52:59Anyway.
- 53:00It would have to be something quite flirtatious, wouldn't it?
- 53:03Do you have any suggestions, James?
- 53:05I've got plenty.
- 53:06We'll get back to that off air.
- 53:07Yeah.
- 53:09And so you're getting a new one?
- 53:11Did you have a new one this year?
- 53:12We both had new ones this year.
- 53:13Oh, bingo.
- 53:14I think I get a new one next year.
- 53:16I don't.
- 53:17I think it's been announced, but we're not getting it for the start of the year.
- 53:20So we're working on our Super 2 cars at the moment.
- 53:23Oh, because one got destroyed, didn't it?
- 53:25Yeah, so I think we're doing another car now.
- 53:28But we're pretty much refurbing those, so then our new chassis will roll in.
- 53:32Will's new chassis will roll in a bit later in the year.
- 53:35What about that guy Shunt at turn four that went around the barrier and tried to make it out onto Whitefield Street?
- 53:40He would have bowled.
- 53:41Mate, he would have got a strike.
- 53:43He would have bowled some people.
- 53:44When the fence was laying over, I was like, damn, this guy's gone up into the top of it to try and knock it over.
- 53:49But people are like, oh, why did he do that?
- 53:51Why didn't he just?
- 53:52You're not thinking when you're the driver, oh, yeah, I'm just going to crash into the barriers here.
- 53:55Oh, I'm going to make it through the other side.
- 53:57You're not thinking, oh, if I make it through, this is going to be bad.
- 53:59We'll just deal with whatever's on the other side.
- 54:01Yeah, that's right.
- 54:02Imagine the guy in a portal around the corner.
- 54:06Or the trams coming.
- 54:08It was pretty funny.
- 54:11But, yeah, you got another one for us, bro?
- 54:14I got one for you.
- 54:16From Riley, do any of you have plans to do any racing outside of supercars next year?
- 54:21Oh, this is looking straight down the barrel at you.
- 54:2412 hour.
- 54:25I'm looking at doing 12 hour.
- 54:26Oh, what are you doing?
- 54:27Who are you doing it with?
- 54:27That Audi again?
- 54:28Oh, big dog.
- 54:29There's a new one.
- 54:31There's new.
- 54:31What, a new Audi?
- 54:33Yeah, new Audi.
- 54:34How did you get that so quickly?
- 54:37Yeah, so looking at doing 12 hour.
- 54:39You do it too, don't you?
- 54:4012 hour?
- 54:40Yep.
- 54:40Yeah, I'll be doing it.
- 54:41With AAA door?
- 54:42No, because they're not doing it anymore, those, the Malaysian guys.
- 54:46Yeah.
- 54:46With you guys, aren't they?
- 54:47Yeah, the Prince's are no longer.
- 54:50But you did yours with him, didn't you?
- 54:51No, this year we run a pro car.
- 54:53Okay.
- 54:53We run a pro car, but I've done it for three years with AAA now.
- 54:56Yeah.
- 54:56AAA generally try to do it.
- 54:57It's just super expensive.
- 54:59Yeah, it's just trying to make it work out.
- 55:00I think I remember watching your poll laugh.
- 55:02I was like... Yeah.
- 55:04He's bloody fast around Bathurst.
- 55:05It's ridiculous in the GT car.
- 55:07Yeah.
- 55:08Anyway, aside from that.
- 55:11Hopefully two NASCAR races I'd like to do.
- 55:13So that's the plan.
- 55:15What ones are they?
- 55:16Yeah.
- 55:16It'd be pretty easy to work out.
- 55:18Tell the day.
- 55:18All the journos at home, just look up cross-reference supercars and you'll work them out.
- 55:23So hopefully...
- 55:24I did remember you asked me about a date.
- 55:26Yeah, yeah, that's right, I did.
- 55:28So we'll say one, but hopefully two if the car's available, and then see what happens with GT after 12 hours.
- 55:34Did you enjoy it this year?
- 55:35GT?
- 55:36Yeah.
- 55:36Yeah, I thought it was a lot of fun.
- 55:37It's just a lot of travel.
- 55:38You know what I mean?
- 55:39Like they're doing the Thursday practice days.
- 55:41Lucky you have your own plane.
- 55:42Yeah, yeah.
- 55:43But they're doing Thursday practice day, so you have to get there Wednesday and you're leaving Sunday or Monday.
- 55:48It's another long week.
- 55:50That doesn't leave a lot of time in the year for Casca Lord, does it?
- 55:53No, no, Dad's not happy.
- 55:54He's not happy.
- 55:56What I struggle with on those weekends, and it's good in a way, but you have like two sessions a day and then just like literally nothing else.
- 56:04Oh, because there's no...
- 56:05There's nothing happening.
- 56:06So you go away for such a long weekend and you're just like, we could have done all this in a day.
- 56:11Yeah.
- 56:13Are you going to do any more in the year?
- 56:16I haven't got anything locked in, but we've got to set up.
- 56:20The engineer.
- 56:21Should we get him on the blower and ask him some questions?
- 56:23Yeah, see what he's got bombshells.
- 56:25But I want to try to do a couple of races in Europe.
- 56:28So I raced there a couple of months ago.
- 56:30With those guys or with AAA?
- 56:33No, just with anyone.
- 56:34I went and drove for a Merc team a couple of months ago at Monza.
- 56:37How cool is that?
- 56:38Yeah, it's sick.
- 56:39It's fast, man.
- 56:40Did you go out on the banking?
- 56:42Yeah.
- 56:42Oh, you would have gone for carding days.
- 56:43Yeah, I briefly went there, but yeah, it's unreal.
- 56:47Like, super cool.
- 56:48We struggled, but like I want to try and do like four or five there next year.
- 56:52I haven't got anything lined up, but yeah, you know, hopefully sort something out, but then hopefully do a good job at the 12 hour and then the phone starts ringing.
- 57:02What are you holding back?
- 57:03He's doing his NASCAR stuff.
- 57:04No, it looks like he's about to drop something.
- 57:07No, I was just holding back a burp.
- 57:08I'll just let one go.
- 57:10But is it going to be in the main one?
- 57:13Yeah, that's what I'm hoping.
- 57:15Oh, well, definitely for one, but it's just, you know, I guess Chicago's one I want to do.
- 57:20But, you know, a lot of the guys over there want to do it.
- 57:22So it's if a car's available, a team's available.
- 57:24So waiting to hear on that one.
- 57:25That'd be awesome if I could try to do that.
- 57:27But I'd be happy to do Xfinity if I couldn't get that.
- 57:30And, you know, obviously Xfinity's over there.
- 57:32It's pretty big.
- 57:33So I just think it's cool.
- 57:35Was it a good experience?
- 57:37Yeah, it was cool.
- 57:37Like, obviously, it was disappointing the car broke down.
- 57:39But the GM simulator, so I went over there, did the GM simulator for, like, a few days, came back, and then went over there and did it a few days before the round again, rolled out of the pits.
- 57:50And on my, I think my first lap, sorry, my second lap, I was third.
- 57:55Because I just did what the simulator was.
- 57:57Must be pretty good Sims then.
- 58:00Oh, they're amazing.
- 58:01Like it literally was the same feeling.
- 58:03I was like, oh, right, like just do this here, do that there.
- 58:05And I'm like, oh, yeah.
- 58:06Like even like to some of the areas you had understeer, I was like, oh, the sim, I wonder if it's this good that we can actually, we had a bit of understeer on the sim and didn't change it.
- 58:14And then it was the exact same through that corner, you know, straight away out the gate.
- 58:18So it was pretty amazing.
- 58:20But I don't know.
- 58:21I just look at.
- 58:22I sort of want to compare myself against, I didn't, you went overseas and did, you know, the journey to F1 and that sort of stuff and obviously did really well, but I've sort of stayed in Australia.
- 58:31So like, even though I'm not planning on going to NASCAR, but I can go over there and compare myself against those guys.
- 58:35If I can do the 12 hour and all that, you can compare yourself outside of just the Australian motorsport.
- 58:40But I think it has shown with Shane going over there and when everyone goes, like it's, it's pretty competitive here, you know?
- 58:47So yeah.
- 58:47Yeah.
- 58:47See what happens.
- 58:48What about you?
- 58:49You just, you know.
- 58:50I'm too old.
- 58:50I'm lucky to have the drive I've got, I reckon.
- 58:52So I'll just see how next year.
- 58:55Walk down the grid at the end of the year.
- 58:56Shake your hands.
- 58:57It's not very often someone announced their retirement, like a year and eight months out or something.
- 59:01Yeah, what was the go there?
- 59:02I just ballsed up, really.
- 59:03I was just doing an interview and I was talking about real estate stuff.
- 59:06So I didn't really think anyone from motorsport world would be listening on Channel 7 News or whatever it was and just rolled it out.
- 59:14But the funniest was the next morning I was just –
- 59:17in bed and I got a message from my manager, Alan, not really my manager, but was.
- 59:21And he goes, why the hell did you retire on TV last night?
- 59:23I'm like, what are you talking about?
- 59:25And he goes, you're retired?
- 59:26I said, no, I didn't.
- 59:26I just did an interview about real estate.
- 59:28And he goes, have you watched the video?
- 59:30And I'm like, no.
- 59:30And he goes, go back and watch it.
- 59:32So I watch it.
- 59:32I'm like, oh, God.
- 59:34But yeah, I'll do this year and that's it, mate.
- 59:38It's been cracking.
- 59:39I can't believe I've been able to do it this long.
- 59:41Yeah.
- 59:42It's awesome.
- 59:42I love it.
- 59:43But I don't want it to happen like what's happened to a few of the guys where they get to the end and it's being tapped on the shoulder like this is your time.
- 59:51You're done.
- 59:52I wanted to be the guy that called it.
- 59:54So, yeah, here we are.
- 59:57How's the real estate going?
- 59:57You sold many?
- 59:58Yeah.
- 59:58Yeah, good.
- 59:59I'm actually just waiting on the contract to be signed right now, which would be nice.
- 1:00:03But no, I'm enjoying it.
- 1:00:04Something completely different.
- 1:00:06When are you going to start putting your mobile on there, though?
- 1:00:08I tried ringing up on one recently.
- 1:00:09James Courtney, he can't even call you.
- 1:00:11Yeah, he can.
- 1:00:12Can you?
- 1:00:12Yeah.
- 1:00:13Do you have a different mobile?
- 1:00:16Do you have heaps of fans calling you?
- 1:00:18No, no one's ever called me.
- 1:00:19Yeah, it's been good.
- 1:00:20Everyone look at the things and call them.
- 1:00:23I'll erase what you can.
- 1:00:25Phone's already ringing now.
- 1:00:26Thanks, guys.
- 1:00:27That's all booking an inspection for a few days in a row.
- 1:00:32We've got this place sold.
- 1:00:33I'll be sending everyone to Carsgill.
- 1:00:35Yeah, perfect.
- 1:00:36Send them up there.
- 1:00:36I do need a car for a little Zara.
- 1:00:38Yeah, yeah.
- 1:00:39We'll have to get that sorted.
- 1:00:40Yeah.
- 1:00:41As long as you're doing me a good deal.
- 1:00:43Good deal.
- 1:00:44And he just wants a house on the Gold Coast.
- 1:00:45But Chrissy, you guys are just chilling?
- 1:00:47Hanging out?
- 1:00:48Nothing.
- 1:00:49I don't know yet.
- 1:00:50I'm going up to Mooloolaba, but we're going to go over.
- 1:00:53My girlfriend wants to go overseas, so we're going overseas.
- 1:00:55Oh, where are you going?
- 1:00:56I don't know yet.
- 1:00:57To America for a NASCAR race?
- 1:00:58Yeah, we'll go overseas, plan it with a race.
- 1:01:01No, I'd be happy to go to Bali or Japan.
- 1:01:04I haven't done Japan, so I'd be pretty keen to go check that out.
- 1:01:06Maybe go for a stay.
- 1:01:07Some cool tracks there.
- 1:01:08Is there?
- 1:01:09Oh, yeah.
- 1:01:10Motegi, Suzuka.
- 1:01:11Yeah.
- 1:01:12Suga.
- 1:01:14I'm not going to a racetrack but it's supposed to be the best excuse me the powder skiing in the world yeah it's winter for that yeah so up in the north it's awesome well I think in Bali but I think they've got those monkeys the red ass ones that sit in the snow really they sit in the hot springs yeah they sit in the hot springs they're funny yeah right
- 1:01:31What are you doing?
- 1:01:33Nothing.

- 1:01:34Just hanging out at home.
- 1:01:35Tegan's just on.
- 1:01:37She's got three months to go.
- 1:01:38Yeah.
- 1:01:39The next little Courtney number four, which is scary.
- 1:01:41You're going to have to keep driving.
- 1:01:43Well, you're going to have to sell a lot of real estate.
- 1:01:44Well, that's why I had to keep driving now because of those ones.
- 1:01:48But yeah, no more kids.
- 1:01:50That's it.
- 1:01:50At least it's good because there's a gap.
- 1:01:53There's a gap.
- 1:01:54So Zara can look after them.
- 1:01:56I try that.
- 1:01:56She's not that interested though.
- 1:01:58Oh, right.
- 1:01:58But it's a good contraception.
- 1:02:00She's like, I'm like, if you do that, this is what you end up with.
- 1:02:03Hopefully I slowed her down.
- 1:02:06But she's been trying flat out texting me all day because it's her last day of school tomorrow for the kids.
- 1:02:12And she's like, no one's at school.
- 1:02:13Everyone's gone.
- 1:02:14Come and get me.
- 1:02:15So she's been into me and I'm like, I'm in Brisbane.
- 1:02:17She goes, I'll come.
- 1:02:18And I'm like, no.
- 1:02:19Have you had any of the, you know, grade 12 parties?
- 1:02:21Dad, I want to have a party.
- 1:02:22No, but I have had the first bloke come over for dinner.
- 1:02:26How'd that go?
- 1:02:27It's so hard.
- 1:02:28Like, it's hard to explain.
- 1:02:31It's just, yeah.
- 1:02:32Did you get all the boys over and reenact the, what's the scene out of Bad Boys?
- 1:02:37Bad Boys with guns and stuff.
- 1:02:38No, I try to be the cool dad, but it's not easy.
- 1:02:43And because I know what I was like, I'm just like, oh, no.
- 1:02:46And so I was like, boys, I'm like that, Dad.
- 1:02:48And I'm like, I was a 17-year-old boy.
- 1:02:51I know exactly what they're thinking.
- 1:02:53But, yeah, so that's my Christmas is blocking that stuff off.

- 1:03:21Or maybe four.
- 1:03:23Yeah, so.
- 1:03:24No, I'm too busy.
- 1:03:26She'd be a single mum.
- 1:03:27She'd be literally a single mum.
- 1:03:29I'm away.
- 1:03:30I think I was home for four days of the last five weeks.
- 1:03:33Cats didn't even look at me when I came.
- 1:03:35They don't generally anyway.
