Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Ryan Bridge: Where are all the wise owls at hardware stores?
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: I've spent a fair bit of time lately in hardware stores.
- 0:03Speaker 1: It's great fun. They let you take your dog. The
- 0:05Speaker 1: reason I did this in winter is well, I've got
- 0:07Speaker 1: things I needed to get done. But they let you
- 0:09Speaker 1: take your dog in and you can basically do a
- 0:12Speaker 1: walk with the dog inside the hardware store and not
- 0:15Speaker 1: get rained on great excellent Anyway, last week I was
- 0:18Speaker 1: in the shop looking for a sealer for limestone tiles.
- 0:21Speaker 1: Now I have no idea about sealers, and I don't
- 0:24Speaker 1: know much about limestone tiles either, if I'm being honest
- 0:26Speaker 1: with you. But this is why you go to Bunnings,
- 0:29Speaker 1: this is why you go to Mine to ten, right,
- 0:30Speaker 1: So there I am. There'll be someone here who knows
- 0:34Speaker 1: about this stuff. Surely, well ten minutes trying to track
- 0:37Speaker 1: someone down in a red shirt and overalls, and then
- 0:39Speaker 1: they had no idea. One young person suggested I use
- 0:43Speaker 1: AI to find the product in the store. I know, shocking,
- 0:48Speaker 1: which is what I did. And then they didn't know
- 0:51Speaker 1: where the product lived in their store. Once I found it,
- 0:53Speaker 1: here we are, you know, fifteen twenty minutes and still
- 0:57Speaker 1: haven't got my sealer for my limestone tile. So I
- 1:00Speaker 1: did what any reasonable person would do. I began discriminating
- 1:03Speaker 1: against the staff based on their age. Where have all
- 1:07Speaker 1: the wise older folks gone? From hardware stores? You know,
- 1:11Speaker 1: you know what I'm talking about. You'll find some bloke,
- 1:13Speaker 1: gray hair, long in the tooth, gruff sort of disposition
- 1:17Speaker 1: in the paint section or the part where they keep
- 1:19Speaker 1: the power tools. They know their way around a screwdriver.
- 1:23Speaker 1: Used to be a carpenter, probably retired for a job
- 1:26Speaker 1: inside indoors. You know the sort I'm talking about. You
- 1:29Speaker 1: go outside to the plant section, You go outside to
- 1:33Speaker 1: the nursery, and there's a lovely lady there who knows
- 1:36Speaker 1: who hydrangers will tell you which trees, which plants are deciduous.
- 1:40Speaker 1: You know, I have no idea anyway, end up calling Mum,
- 1:43Speaker 1: end up calling Grandma? How do I get to the
- 1:45Speaker 1: bottom of this? Where have all the wise old owls gone?
- 1:50Speaker 1: Is it just me? There was like this is a
- 1:52Speaker 1: true story. Last week there was a woman in the
- 1:56Speaker 1: store who obviously had the exact same idea as me.
- 2:00Speaker 1: Was goose guarding. There was one old old fella who
- 2:03Speaker 1: was on the tools, goose guarding him. Wait waiting, I'm
- 2:07Speaker 1: getting him next, you know, So where have they gone?
- 2:10Speaker 1: And it's not to say that young people don't know
- 2:12Speaker 1: what they're doing, but if you've been round the block
- 2:14Speaker 1: a few times, you're more likely to, aren't you. For
