Transcript
- 0:06Hi, good afternoon. Welcome to the Iowa Sports Radio
- 0:10Network. It's Miller and Condon to get
- 0:11things going as Trent and I will talk sports with you right up
- 0:15until 2:00. Here's what's coming up on our
- 0:17program. Scott Dockerman's been busy
- 0:19writing at The Athletic this week following all of the SEC,
- 0:23the college football dot dot dot.
- 0:25We will take a look at that. It's good piece on the Iowa
- 0:29offense as well. It came out earlier in the week
- 0:32football wise, and we'll talk to Doc about those topics and more.
- 0:35And he joins us at at the bottom of the hour.
- 0:38It's Monday, so that means Matt Snyder's going to be here to
- 0:40talk baseball with Trent tonight.
- 0:42To kick off hour number two, CBSSports.com is where you can
- 0:46read Matt Snyder. He'll join us as we rejoin you
- 0:49just after one. And then Alec Bussey from
- 0:53cyclonealert.com, part of 24/7 Sports.
- 0:56All of his Monday content is up. It's free at cyclonealert.com.
- 1:00And if you're interested in Iowa State reading materials over
- 1:04your lunch hour while you listen to the radio, we encourage you
- 1:08to head to to cyclonealert.com to do that.
- 1:13Trent will make some plays before we get out of here just
- 1:15before 2:00. So the weekends behind, what
- 1:17about a difference between two and three day weekend?
- 1:19Right? Just flew by.
- 1:22My God, what a picturesque night Saturday was just gorgeous
- 1:25weather wise. But I'll buckle up because here
- 1:27comes the Heat, at least today. So we are now set in both the
- 1:31Stanley Cup and the NBA. It is the Pacers.
- 1:34It is. OK, C and the Venera may be the
- 1:37biggest basketball topic that it came up to, at least for me over
- 1:40the weekend, was watching the Inside the NBA crew sign off one
- 1:45final time, F bombs and all on Saturday night.
- 1:49I I couldn't I couldn't turn the channel.
- 1:52I just wanted to see just soaking everything in, you know,
- 1:54what they had to say in their final go round on TNT.
- 2:00It feels like it's not going to be the same.
- 2:02Yeah, you brought it up last week.
- 2:05I searched over the weekend. So what does this mean post
- 2:08game? Are they going to go right to
- 2:10SVP? No, that's not what they should
- 2:13be doing. But I I don't know.
- 2:15I haven't found any clarity. But inside the NBA after what
- 2:18was it, 36 years, signed off for the final time and it hit the
- 2:22boys hard. And then yesterday, spending as
- 2:24much time on Twitter just looking at some of the greatest
- 2:27moments from that show over the year and some of the laughs that
- 2:30they've had, and Oh my God, what a great, great piece of
- 2:34television history. A great group of people that you
- 2:37can tell enjoy working together and you start with that
- 2:40component of it and the fun that they had, not taking themselves
- 2:44too seriously. No, certainly.
- 2:46Not now. The other component is no.
- 2:47You want hard cutting analysis, That's how you get there.
- 2:51They're opinions, they'll give you opinions, but they they can
- 2:54be hard cutting. Oh.
- 2:55Absolutely. But a lot of times it's not
- 2:58backed up by stats, they're backed up by feelings.
- 3:01Right And. Chuck getting names wrong,
- 3:03right? Absolutely NBA player or
- 3:06whatever, the game that they are playing and he wouldn't be
- 3:09getting the ball right. But that's not why you went
- 3:11there for it. It was for the entertainment and
- 3:14that is the concern as we talked about last week going forward.
- 3:17Now, I guess it didn't strike me in the same way because we are
- 3:21still going to get it next year. And because of that I wasn't all
- 3:24wrapped up that I had to do it. Maybe it also helped that, you
- 3:28know, there's other things going on and I just I wasn't as into
- 3:32it at the end because it's not over.
- 3:36It will be there. The fashion, it'll probably be
- 3:38different, but it's still going to be there and we're still
- 3:40going to get the laughs. So we're still going to get what
- 3:42makes inside the NBA so. Good.
- 3:44Are they more are Do they have more power behind them to enact
- 3:50change at ESPNC? Maybe ESP NS got an idea of
- 3:53wait, they what they want the show to be like and inside the
- 3:56NB as got an idea of what they want to do and that's their
- 3:59quote show. Are they powerful enough to No,
- 4:02no, no, It's going to be our way.
- 4:05I don't think so. That's too bad.
- 4:07I don't believe that they do because ultimately there are a
- 4:10lot of people a lot higher up, you know, the head of Turner
- 4:13Sports as we know it, whatever the new name of it now is.
- 4:17But David Zaslov, he is mocked by people inside the industry.
- 4:22He has laughed at letting the NBA fall away.
- 4:24He is somebody that has looked down upon and this was but.
- 4:28What is your What? Is the show under his umbrella?
- 4:30Right. But what does what does his fan
- 4:31base want? What are people tuning into that
- 4:34show want? They want what they see night
- 4:36after night. Do we know what the ratings are
- 4:38for it? Have we ever heard any ratings
- 4:40things about Inside? No, you know what I go by by the
- 4:42awards that it wins. You know, it's it's TNT, It's
- 4:46not the four letter network. It's and it's been there for a
- 4:50long time, I'll give you that. And it's certainly people are
- 4:52accustomed to turning there, but it's the it's the Emmys that
- 4:56they continue to win and the acclaim that people in the
- 4:59industry have for that show. But for the shareholders of
- 5:02Disney, for the people that work at ESPN awards, don't make your
- 5:06next paycheck. It's about money and ultimately
- 5:10the way that they do things and the commercial breaks and all
- 5:12that, it's different and ultimately I think it's going to
- 5:16come back to that. ESPN will have final say and it
- 5:19will look a whole lot. Different.
- 5:20If it is, how long do they stay? I think Chuck said.
- 5:24I saw on on Twitter, apparently he's on Dan Patrick today.
- 5:28He's got a seven-year contract that he's going to give the boys
- 5:312. If it's not the same, do you
- 5:35think that you know what? It's hard to walk away for $20
- 5:38million working like 50 nights a year.
- 5:42But they've got a lot of millions of dollars.
- 5:43They do. One would.
- 5:44Assume absolutely. We'll see where it goes.
- 5:46And they're all getting up in age.
- 5:47I mean, Shaq doesn't need to work.
- 5:48Chuck doesn't need to work. I'm guessing Jet's the same way
- 5:52And and Ernie. Doesn't need to work.
- 5:54That guy's made millions of self here over the last 20 years.
- 5:57Without a doubt. And then the people that were a
- 5:59part of the show that you just forget about, right?
- 6:02Some of the people that were on there.
- 6:04Well, we'll see where it goes, but it kind of felt like the end
- 6:07of an era. It really did.
- 6:08And yes, we should be talking about the Pacers and they moving
- 6:11on. I just kind of get the sense
- 6:12it's just like it's inevitable if they're about to be handed
- 6:17their fate. And it's not good.
- 6:18I don't think. I mean, I hope I'm wrong, but
- 6:21the betting favorite in in this series.
- 6:24I mean, you can't bet. You can't bet OK, C they're -7
- 6:27dollars. You have to bet $7.00 to make a
- 6:30buck. But the if if you if you have to
- 6:33make a bet on this series, it's the number of games they would
- 6:37win it in and five games is the favorite.
- 6:40So you know, the gentleman sweep that they that the Pacers would
- 6:44get one. I'm not even sure they'll get
- 6:46one. And you get a better price if
- 6:49you better sweep because you can get the, excuse me, the Thunder
- 6:52in four at 3 to 1. The gentleman sweep it at five
- 6:56games at 2:00 to 1. So you get a whole lot of better
- 6:58price at Circa if you're going that direction.
- 7:01Now, if you think the Pacers are going to do it so you can get
- 7:03them at what? You think the Pacers are going
- 7:05to do? If you if you think you know
- 7:07what you. Call me, I'll take your bet.
- 7:10We can't do. That I know I'm just kidding,
- 7:13but if you don't, I mean, think again.
- 7:17Save your money instead of betting them though, at plus 550
- 7:21they're not going to win in a sweep.
- 7:22No, they're. Not going to win at 5:00.
- 7:24I don't think so. Maybe 6?
- 7:27I would be shocked. Or 7.
- 7:29So what are those prices? Plus 1130 Pacers and 6 + 1625
- 7:34Pacers and seven. So if you want to have a bet,
- 7:38take that bet. If you're betting units, 20
- 7:40bucks, take 10, put it on Pacers and six, take 10, put it on
- 7:44Pacers and seven. Yeah, because they're not
- 7:45winning in a sweep they're not winning at.
- 7:47Five, I would be stunned. Yes, I would be stunned.
- 7:50I would be stunned if you know what I meant to do and I forgot
- 7:52to do it. Damn it, when these two teams
- 7:54played each other this year, how did Halliburton do against Dort?
- 7:57Oh yeah, right, because he's supposed to be.
- 8:01He's going to be seeing a lot of him over the next over this
- 8:05series. We'll see.
- 8:09Hats off to him. The atmosphere seemingly was it
- 8:13was a terrific place to be on on Saturday night as the Pacers.
- 8:16I mean, New York really was never in this basketball.
- 8:18Game No. If you didn't see, didn't miss
- 8:20much. It was what, 4140?
- 8:23I think it was it. Was, you know what, that's fair.
- 8:25Middle second in the game. Early in the game it was.
- 8:28And then it just kind of got away and never came back.
- 8:31It was the the surge in the third quarter and then it was
- 8:33just cruise control. Yeah, yeah, you're right.
- 8:36It was it was the second-half that it got on.
- 8:38There, locked it on 75 and they just cruised on in to the
- 8:41finals. I saw.
- 8:43So this is the first time in the luxury tax era that we have two
- 8:47teams that are not paying the luxury tax.
- 8:49Really. Since 2003.
- 8:51Something to be said for that. We wanted parody or people
- 8:54wanted parody in the NBA because there were just certain teams,
- 8:58yeah. The television networks don't
- 8:59this week. You got what you wanted.
- 9:03And be going to Oklahoma City and you're going to
- 9:05Indianapolis. You want a fan base that
- 9:07everybody feels like they have a chance?
- 9:08Well, you have it now, OKC against Indiana.
- 9:11Who do the networks? Who does the ABCESP and
- 9:14gravitate towards? Halliburton, SG.
- 9:18ASGA, he was the MVP, I think. Yeah, that's going to be the
- 9:22direction. And I wonder if they're going to
- 9:24try to sell us that, you know, his brand.
- 9:25It's it's not a bad brand basketball, even though we all
- 9:29know. He's such a hell of a player, he
- 9:30really is. I don't know how they're going
- 9:34to try and present this thing, but the I mean the pre game show
- 9:37and the post game God, it's just not even close.
- 9:40And and the play by play the same way, I think anyways, but
- 9:44we shall wait for Thursday for that one.
- 9:46They'll will drop the puck on Wednesday night for game one of
- 9:49the Stanley Cup. So it's a lot of baseball boys,
- 9:52since we're talking basketball to begin with and and we're
- 9:55talking about Indiana or Indianapolis and the Indiana
- 10:00Pacers, the Indiana Fever, not the same.
- 10:03Group. No.
- 10:05If there's any doubt what she means to her team, look at the
- 10:09result of the last couple of nights.
- 10:11Now, I know that there were some injuries in that game, but this
- 10:15they were what, a 12 point favorite?
- 10:16I think I saw 13 point favorite. That Connecticut team's awful,
- 10:19terrible. They were gutted from what they
- 10:21were a year. Absolutely.
- 10:22I saw something that when did they play the Liberty?
- 10:24Was recently the Liberty yesterday?
- 10:27Was it yesterday? Lost by 52, they're crushed.
- 10:29It's like the second worst loss in WNBA history.
- 10:32Right. And we just saw what the Liberty
- 10:34and the fever did with Caitlin on the floor.
- 10:36That was toe to toe that could have gone either way, went the
- 10:39Liberty's way. But Oh my God.
- 10:41So so they got gutted, huh? I mean, that's where Stephanie
- 10:45White was. And obviously the the roster not
- 10:48the same. But man, oh man, this league
- 10:50needs her in the worst way. Her team needs her.
- 10:53And it's coming up on this Saturday.
- 10:56CBS needs her and they're not going to have her so.
- 10:59Is that official? Because she's out.
- 11:01Because they said two weeks but depending on the timeline when
- 11:03the two weeks starts. Well, I would think they're
- 11:05trying to do everything they can to get her on the floor because
- 11:08a, it's the Chicago squad, it's the Indiana squad.
- 11:11They want to obviously want the match up against each.
- 11:14Other, but they can beat Chicago.
- 11:16Chicago's bad. That's a bad team.
- 11:18Well. They can are.
- 11:20The fever any good? They're banked up too.
- 11:22It's not just Caitlin, right? And then depending on the rest
- 11:25of the health of the team, when you're looking at the teams
- 11:27though that you can potentially beat without Caitlin, Chicago's
- 11:29on that list. So, and really, this week was.
- 11:32Yukon Trent, Connecticut. Not Yukon.
- 11:35Yukon would have beat them, right?
- 11:37So was Connecticut Trent. I understand that, but I'm just
- 11:39saying if you're healthy and you think another couple of days is
- 11:44going to be she came back too soon or she shouldn't have been
- 11:48playing in Carver Hawkeye Arena, I don't think it's a stretch to
- 11:51say that yes it. Was the same injury?
- 11:54But it's the other leg, right? Of course, because you're using,
- 11:57you're compensating. Precisely.
- 11:58You could, and you have a quad strain and there's four muscles
- 12:02in the quad and you can look at you.
- 12:04Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. I've been reading up on this,
- 12:06but again, I fell down those rabbit holes.
- 12:10Twitter sucks. It's an awful, awful invention,
- 12:13just for a myriad of different ways.
- 12:14Stay on the for you. Yes.
- 12:16Are they? No, No.
- 12:17Followers. Followers.
- 12:18Followers, Yeah. Just in general, it's an awful
- 12:21toxic place. And then you go down some of
- 12:24these rabbit holes and WNBA Twitter might be the worst
- 12:27Twitter that there is out there. The racy, the back and forth,
- 12:32you make one comment and just what direction that it can go.
- 12:35But I I went down that direction and sometime over the weekend
- 12:38and I just, I felt dirty afterward, needed to shower.
- 12:40It's bad. It's so ugly and gross and all I
- 12:44was looking at was more information on entries.
- 12:46That's all I was looking for and Colson get.
- 12:48Colson's out and Holson, they're both out.
- 12:53No, Cunningham not not Lexi. She's good.
- 12:56Lexi. How this good?
- 12:57It's Cunningham that's out. Cunningham and Coulson were the
- 12:59two that got out, got knocked out over the weekend.
- 13:02We'll see where it goes. Baseball from over the weekend.
- 13:05Don't look now, but the Chicago Cubs are tied for the best
- 13:07record in the National League. How about that?
- 13:09Didn't have that to begin the month of.
- 13:11June Nor did I. Coming into the season, we like
- 13:13them. We thought they were going to be
- 13:16the division favorite and they've proven certainly that.
- 13:20The way this team though, just the way that they play, it's
- 13:24such an enjoyable day of flipping out a ball.
- 13:27Game it is. Because.
- 13:29Especially when Boog's in the booth.
- 13:30They're never out of it, Boog. They're never out of it the way
- 13:35that they can beat you with the speed with the power.
- 13:38Oh, now look, you know it's Suzuki that's been red hot for
- 13:40the last couple weeks and and the 2-3 weeks preview prior it
- 13:44was BC Watson BCA. It's just.
- 13:46Somebody just Shaw making what he's what?
- 13:48Look what him he's doing. Coming back in, what he's been
- 13:51able to do and what we talked about him getting sent down and
- 13:54building it up, it's an enjoyable team and yet you know
- 13:56that this is not going to be the team that we're going to see in
- 13:58October. I don't think so, but I'm not.
- 14:00I'm starting to think that, you know what, maybe they don't need
- 14:03to go get a closer. I know it's May, late May into
- 14:07June baseball and Palencia's doing what he's supposed to be
- 14:11doing and it's a different animal once you get to October.
- 14:14But man, Trent, I mean, he's got, he's throwing it over 100
- 14:17miles an hour. He's accurate.
- 14:19He's getting strikeouts. He's not getting hit.
- 14:22I'm impressed. I'm impressed with what I'm
- 14:24seeing from him. The I belong now, I thought it
- 14:27was going to be Porter Hodge. I mean, going back to the first.
- 14:30It might have been had he not got hurt.
- 14:31He still. But I've always been a
- 14:33proponent. They just need more arms, the
- 14:36depth of the bullpen. And it doesn't have to be a
- 14:38close. You know, people are so
- 14:39infatuated with closers and closer.
- 14:41We've seen that that has shifted so much the last 3-4 years.
- 14:44Go back to the Royals. Oh absolutely.
- 14:46And that was 123, like 789. Get 6 innings out of your
- 14:49starter and Wade Davis and Herrera and.
- 14:52The other guy. The other guy I got 2 out of 3.
- 14:55Not bad off the top of that. But now we see so many managers
- 14:59that manage in a way closer is going to be our best pitcher.
- 15:03He might pitch in the seventh, he might pitch in the 5th.
- 15:06You're going to go that direction.
- 15:08The Cubs, in order to get to that kind of bullpen, I just
- 15:11think that they need a couple of very good veteran arms to get to
- 15:14that point and bluntly might be that guy in the back end.
- 15:16He's been great. I watched your team over the
- 15:18weekend, the twins out in out in Seattle.
- 15:21Friday night was great. You know what, Trent?
- 15:23I'm kicking myself. I turned it off with one out in
- 15:26the night. Oh, you did that?
- 15:27Close and then it then it hit the fan.
- 15:30But Paddock yesterday was unbelievable.
- 15:33Him and Castilla going head to head course.
- 15:35Castilla was up. What after six?
- 15:37Did he pitch it in the 7th? Whatever.
- 15:39It was a real pitchers duel. I think it was one.
- 15:41It was zip, zip. To that point when he came out,
- 15:44Paddock was phenomenal. I really was.
- 15:47Twins are legit. Twins are legit.
- 15:49Well. They lose 2 out of three in
- 15:50Seattle and easily could have been a sweat.
- 15:52Absolutely could be. Come back on Friday.
- 15:55Jack and I went out to the ball game on Friday night.
- 15:57I Cubs game. No did you?
- 15:58And so just got home, got him to bed and then was able to watch
- 16:01the end of the Twins game. So that was an enjoyable cap to
- 16:03the baseball night. And I'm with you like I'm not
- 16:06frustrated. Now they go to Oakland.
- 16:08You'll be frustrated in Royce Lewis.
- 16:11I I don't know. As we talked about him last
- 16:13week, there's nothing you can do at this point, is it?
- 16:15Yeah, I don't think. I mean, they pulled him
- 16:17yesterday. He's a sports psychologist type
- 16:19of thing, isn't it? Yeah, I mean that they.
- 16:21Pinch hit for him yesterday. Trent, what are your I get they.
- 16:24Should 4 for your last. 80 No, I no kidding.
- 16:26Baldelli did the right thing, but it's just jarring that of
- 16:30all the people that I mean, this guy had superstar written all
- 16:32over him. I thought he's the number one
- 16:35overall. Pick and he.
- 16:36Not the Twins overall first round pick.
- 16:38Yeah, the number one overall pick.
- 16:40And he looked like he was on his way to backing that up, but my
- 16:43God. He's never had anything like
- 16:45this and I still believe in talent.
- 16:47What are the dots that he's got on the back of his neck, Do you
- 16:50know? There's like a line of two lines
- 16:54of little circles about the size of, I don't know, a dime maybe
- 16:57on the back from his hairline? Well, as far as you can see,
- 17:00into his uniform. I thought I'd never seen that
- 17:03before. I don't know.
- 17:05I mean, the I it, it was just, it kind of stuck out on the
- 17:08television broadcast anyways. But yeah, Twins, it was a fun
- 17:12watch. It was some of the local teams,
- 17:15one of the local teams calling up their guy Caglione, the kid
- 17:18we've been talking about the, the power hitter that is working
- 17:21his way through the royal system.
- 17:24Well, he's worked his way all the way through his royal
- 17:26system. He's going to play when Kansas
- 17:28City resumes their play this week.
- 17:29Jack Caglione been a fast track to the major leagues, but here
- 17:33he is and he's going to join the Royals tomorrow.
- 17:37That was a fun series as well. Watching the Tigers watching
- 17:39Scooble pitch against Kansas City baseball was good over the
- 17:43weekend, which was great because it was either that or one
- 17:46basketball game. And you don't get into any of
- 17:49the College World Series. I know, I just don't.
- 17:50Know the team. I've been enjoying the softball.
- 17:54Now I can't figure out the rule are the the fact that you can't
- 17:58go back and challenge whether a player touched home plate or
- 18:01not. Yeah, right after.
- 18:03Watching the fail for 15 minutes.
- 18:05Right when it's clear she didn't touch home plate.
- 18:08And then her teammate assisted her back.
- 18:10And you can't make content our contact rather.
- 18:14But Trent, I would. I was probably, you know, of the
- 18:20opinion. Yeah, I can't.
- 18:21Anybody can hit that. But then you see it gets on you
- 18:25quick, it does get on you quick. And then they go, who was it?
- 18:27What Major League Baseball player is a big name?
- 18:30There's a big name. Wanted to was it Griffey?
- 18:33No. Wanted to face Jenny Finch.
- 18:36I think it was it a rod as soon as he might.
- 18:40There was a But I know exactly what you're saying.
- 18:42Yeah, I can't. Remember the superstar Major
- 18:46League Baseball player couldn't touch.
- 18:48Was it Poulos? Could have been.
- 18:50Don't know who it was, but if a player of that ilk stood in the
- 18:55batter's box and and tried to hit Jenny Finch's pitching and
- 18:59Oh my God, good luck. So my algorithm now on Facebook
- 19:03and on Instagram with like the little reels that pop up, the
- 19:05little videos, there's a lot of softball stuff because I'm
- 19:08looking at, you know, coaching tips and things like that.
- 19:10And a bunch of those show up and it'll be like, all right, we got
- 19:13these 5 college athletes. So we're going to go out there
- 19:16and we're going to see who can hit against a softball pitcher.
- 19:19I don't, you know, the baseball guy goes up there, I'll swag.
- 19:21Yeah, this is no big deal. And they are.
- 19:24Yeah, absolutely. All right, let's get let's get
- 19:27baseball Benny in here. By the way, just real quick on
- 19:30this. I know you were at a principal
- 19:31park Friday. Saw some of the video from De
- 19:34Jean's event yesterday. Well done.
- 19:37Well done. And and the number of guys that
- 19:39showed up to participate in and I'm, I'm guessing on their own
- 19:42dime to get to Des Moines to help out their teammate.
- 19:45That was that was fascinating stuff.
- 19:48Benny, welcome to the program. Is this going to be an annual
- 19:50event? Do you know?
- 19:52It's this was the second year, so hopefully.
- 19:54Well, shame. Shame on me.
- 19:55I had no idea until somebody called me Friday with 15 minutes
- 19:58left in the show that this has taken place this weekend.
- 20:01Hi, Benny, how are you? I am doing absolutely fantastic
- 20:05in the 20 O 4 Pepsi All Star game, Finch struck out Bulls
- 20:10Piazza and Brian Johnson. Jesus.
- 20:14That's awesome, yeah. That she she was she was
- 20:17unhittable. Like he rise balls everything.
- 20:21You see it in a different angle. It's ridiculous.
- 20:23But you were you were asking about how did Halliburton play
- 20:27against the. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 20:29Not not well. Got beat 132 to 111.
- 20:34He scored 18 points, 4 assists, 3 rebounds.
- 20:37Second game 120 to 114 loss. 4 points, 8 assists, 2 rebounds.
- 20:44Averaged 11 points, 6 assists, 1 1/2 rebounds per game in the two
- 20:49games against said MVP. 33, eight and seven in the first
- 20:54game for Shay. 45-8 and seven in the second game for Shay.
- 20:59Shay averaged 39.8 rebounds, 7 assists.
- 21:02Thanks to Spacers I think, and I heard of that this morning guys.
- 21:08The Thunder went 29 and one against the Eastern Conference.
- 21:14Oh my God. Think about that.
- 21:15What's the sweep pricing entrance 3:00 to?
- 21:18One you can get the sweep. That might actually.
- 21:22That might actually. It should probably be two to one
- 21:25if you want. Probably will be.
- 21:27Get it while you can, Betty. Thanks for the call.
- 21:29Appreciate it. Yeah, Good to talk to you.
- 21:32That's wild. Just since we're kind of pulp
- 21:35ring as we always do in this first segment.
- 21:37Did you hear Jack Nicklaus talk to Scotty Scheffler on the
- 21:39podium after the golf tournament yesterday?
- 21:41I. Didn't.
- 21:43And he's right. And he's basically saying, you
- 21:45know, Scotty's, you're crushing all these guys.
- 21:49But who he beating? Oh, and he wasn't talking down
- 21:52to Scheffler. But it was shots fired at Rory.
- 21:56Maybe good point 'cause he didn't, he didn't play and
- 21:58didn't. He didn't show up for the second
- 22:00elevated event. Who was at the forefront to get
- 22:02these elevated events? Rory McIlroy.
- 22:04Not only that, Rory didn't call Jack and let him know.
- 22:06And when you're of that stature, you need to let Jack Nicholas
- 22:10know you're not going to be. There misstep on on on Rory's
- 22:12part. I agree with you.
- 22:13I agree with you. I mean if it was.
- 22:14Missed the last two elevated events.
- 22:16You didn't show up. You didn't make the phone call.
- 22:18And I think it was a shot at, not a shot.
- 22:20It's just a shot at golf period. Get you, you know what together,
- 22:24yes, right, everybody, let's get everybody.
- 22:26Let's have Bryson Dechambeau show up at this and let's get
- 22:29all of these guys that took the money from Liv to come back
- 22:33because Scheffler is just here, here.
- 22:36Do you know Kyle Porter? You follow him.
- 22:37Pretty good golf rider. Yes, absolutely.
- 22:39Yep. Scotty Scheffler's played 12
- 22:41events this year. You follow me, right?
- 22:44The medium player, So an average player on the PGA Tour who
- 22:49finished in the middle of the pack and all of those
- 22:51tournaments of the 12 that he played.
- 22:53And this average player made the cut and say 9 or 10 of those 12
- 22:56events, his aggregate score and he would have made the cut on in
- 23:00the ones that he that he didn't, his aggregate score would have
- 23:04been +8 medal of the pack guy, +8 those same 12 tournaments.
- 23:09Scheffler's -140 he's 140 under, 148 stroke differential from him
- 23:16to a middle of the pack Tour player.
- 23:18Scotty Scheffler won three times in May.
- 23:20The Colorado Rockies won three times in May.
- 23:22They got 28 games to do it. He got 4 tournaments.
- 23:25He had 4 tournaments. He's playing it.
- 23:29It's not even fun. Yeah, it's not.
- 23:31And how can you tune in to watch these events?
- 23:34It's a foregone conclusion. It's kind of like the NBA.
- 23:36Yeah. What we're embarking upon.
- 23:38Well, and I watch more Saturday. Did you watch?
- 23:40Some golf I did, I never did on Sunday just because of that,
- 23:44like because at that time. He was anointed.
- 23:46No, he was like 3 strokes back. It was before Griffin blew up
- 23:49towards the end. He had an awful hole in there
- 23:51somewhere and that's when all of a sudden I got jumped aboard
- 23:55with Scotty here because he's actually plus money at that
- 23:57point. But that's you're right, it's
- 24:00not entertaining come Sunday what he is doing to the rest of
- 24:04the tour. But you know what, Trent?
- 24:06It used to be entertaining when it was.
- 24:07Tiger that was dominating, Yeah, personality.
- 24:10Yeah, like him, a lot like him or hate him.
- 24:14Mm hmm. Scotty, you took the side, yes.
- 24:16Yeah, he had an opinion. Scotty doesn't.
- 24:18No. He is just a nice guy.
- 24:20Yeah, really nice guy. Yep.
- 24:22But boring as white milk. Yep.
- 24:25You're getting nothing from him. No guy that was arrested 13
- 24:29months ago. Slurf time locked up, cuffed and
- 24:35stuffed. I will take your time out.
- 24:38We'll come back. Scott Dockerman will join us to
- 24:40talk college football with Doc Iowa football with Doc Really
- 24:43good piece on Tim Lester's offense.
- 24:46I will delve into that with Scott Dockerman when he joins us
- 24:50next. Miller and Condon underway on a
- 24:51Monday. It's the Iowa Sports Radio
- 24:53Network. I'm Millory Condon.
- 24:59Welcome back just past 1230 on a Monday.
- 25:01Hour number two, Matt Snyder, CBSSports.com.
- 25:04We'll talk baseball and Alec Bussey covers Iowa State for
- 25:1024/7 sports. cyclonealert.com right now, Scott Dockerman from
- 25:13The Athletic. He's been busy writing about the
- 25:16Hawkeye offense, keeping up with the SEC and their plans to,
- 25:21well, do what they do to college sports.
- 25:22We'll see where it and stock. Good to talk to you, Trent.
- 25:26Ken, thanks for coming on. I guess where I want to start,
- 25:28Doc, is with one of our talking points from last week.
- 25:32And just the fact that I learned that there's some rules, some
- 25:36strings had to be pulled, some, I don't know if it was back and
- 25:40forth horse trading or whatever, But for Fox to get the Seihawk
- 25:44game and do so in the in the 11 O clock central window, that's
- 25:48quite a cool Scott Dockerman. Hey, hey, good to be on with you
- 25:53guys. And what what transpired and I?
- 25:56Talked to all the. Heads of all three networks and
- 25:59did a story on the on the draft between, you know, how the Big
- 26:0310 media partners draft the Big 10 games.
- 26:06And this was the first year where the Big 10 was supposed to
- 26:10have one of its games in the Big Noon time slot every single
- 26:15week. Last year it had there was room
- 26:18for one Big 12 game. And part of that was because
- 26:22Texas and Oklahoma were still when the whole thing was
- 26:26negotiated. We're still part of the Big 12,
- 26:29so they had room for one of those games.
- 26:31Well, that of course ended and then they ended up going with
- 26:35Penn State at West Virginia last year.
- 26:36But this was the first year where there was supposed to be a
- 26:39Big 10 only window and a Big 10 campus.
- 26:42But as you saw maybe the the week that was Week 2 for the Big
- 26:4710, They have nothing, nothing of value at all on one of its
- 26:51home campuses. And Fox initially had it slated
- 26:55for the middle of the day. And I think it was FIU at Penn
- 26:58State was going to be on Fox. And they just didn't feel very
- 27:01good about it. And so they they went to the Big
- 27:0410 and and said, Hey, is there any way we can get an exception
- 27:06here? We'd like to be an aim big
- 27:09rivalry game, two teams that could buy for 19 wins last year.
- 27:13You still have a Big 10 game. We still have a relationship
- 27:15with, with the Big 12 and the Big 10 granted that.
- 27:19So it's going to be, you know, quite the atmosphere you're
- 27:22going to you get the big noon kick off show, you're going to
- 27:25get, you know, big noon exposure and it's it's going to be a go
- 27:30to an already big, big day in in central Iowa an.
- 27:35Interesting note to me because I always thought it was 5149%.
- 27:39That's the ownership of the Big 10 network.
- 27:41Scott, correct me if I'm wrong, but when this launch wasn't the
- 27:44Big 10 owned 51%, Fox owned 49% because in one of your articles
- 27:49last week, you mentioned that Fox now owns 61%.
- 27:53You know, kind of the loopholes or, or just the maturations of
- 27:56how we got to that point because that was always my belief that,
- 27:58well, at least the Big 10 owns a majority share of the Big 10
- 28:01network. Yeah, in the very beginning, the
- 28:04Big 10 owned 51% and Fox owned 49%, which allowed the Big 10 to
- 28:09kind of have a controlling, controlling leverage over the
- 28:13network. Well, about three to four years
- 28:15and it was right around 2010 or 11, I can't remember cheer they,
- 28:19they flipped the equity so when 5149 in favor of Fox and they
- 28:24paid this pretty significant money.
- 28:26Well during the COVID year and all the schools were hurting
- 28:30financially, Fox then bought 10 more percent equity.
- 28:35So and so that gave everybody a pretty, pretty good shot in the
- 28:38arm, even though some schools had to still borrow $50 million
- 28:42from their central fund. But most of them don't really
- 28:46helped out. So yeah, that's why it's now 61
- 28:49to 39% in favor of Fox on PTN. I saw that note in your article
- 28:55talking about the potential, what was looking like Ohio
- 28:58State, Texas being a Sunday game and Texas saying no to that.
- 29:03Well, why do we have to be robbed of everything as sports
- 29:05fans? I mean, the stand alone window
- 29:06with that game at minimum is going to be a preseason top five
- 29:09game. It's just as football fans
- 29:11frustrating. But I guess we just have to
- 29:12accept it, right Doc? That's the new way of the world.
- 29:15Just accept it. Not we anything we can do it.
- 29:17It comes down to the powers of B.
- 29:19Yeah, it would have been, it would have been fun switching
- 29:21back and forth between that and Notre Dame, Miami, I I think.
- 29:26But you know, that's that's what happens to these days.
- 29:28You know, the the schools have veto power, which is
- 29:31understandable to move a day. It's not so much you can't move,
- 29:35you can't determine the time, but you can determine the day.
- 29:38And and I know that Texas was kind of being flip it.
- 29:41And, you know, Chris Del Conte said, well, I got to go to
- 29:45church that day or something like that.
- 29:47Come on, you know, you can go to church in Columbus.
- 29:49It's they've got some great cathedrals there.
- 29:52But, you know, it's just kind of funny that that was what ended
- 29:56up not happening. So, you know, but for the people
- 29:59of Ohio State, you know, they they've been really upset.
- 30:01Their last six games of the regular season last year, all
- 30:04were at noon and five of them were on Big Noon.
- 30:08And some of it was Ohio State Fox's fault.
- 30:11Some of it was just bad luck. But but I mean, they're really
- 30:14trying to to get out of that, you know, that that wave there
- 30:18and and, and, you know, then the Big 10 kind of stepped in in the
- 30:22next two weeks and put them once and prime time on Peacock
- 30:25against Ohio and then another in the midday.
- 30:28I think it was good Grambling and I'd expect a few others to
- 30:31move around this. The balance throughout the
- 30:33season is a lot better than it was last year.
- 30:36So, but yeah, it would have been great to see that one in prime
- 30:39time on a Sunday night. I know Fox would have wanted
- 30:42that too. Doc, I'm guessing you would love
- 30:44to be in the room either at Fox, NBC or CBS.
- 30:47The, the big 10 TV draft really is fascinating.
- 30:51It's something that, you know, I, I guess I don't wasn't even
- 30:53aware that this takes place until you started talking about
- 30:57it within the last couple of years.
- 30:59But it really is something to behold just to see kind of the
- 31:03the chess, the chess board and the pieces, all these those
- 31:07networks are moving to try and, you know, obtain the best game
- 31:10in their slots on their networks.
- 31:13Yeah, it was a lot of fun to report that and talk to each of
- 31:15the different networks because they all come from different
- 31:17perspectives and and they all have different factors.
- 31:20I mean, whether it's their their predetermined time slot and then
- 31:24the external things. I mean, like NBC has to, you
- 31:27know, consider things like Notre Dame football and when when it
- 31:31is want to put Notre Dame in primetime.
- 31:32You know, Fox has the reason why there is a drop in in Friday
- 31:36games is they decided to go heavy with the baseball playoffs
- 31:40the final two Fridays in in October rather than scheduling
- 31:43college football. And and you got to take that
- 31:46into consideration and and then you got to look at the landscape
- 31:49and OK, what big game is going on on the SEC this night?
- 31:53Maybe for NBC, we punch a little bit or maybe we ramp it up, you
- 31:57know, so I, I think, you know, everything that they do is, is
- 32:00really interesting to me. And, and they all were pretty
- 32:03universal on how they approached it and said, you know, they
- 32:06started really examining the schedules back as soon as they
- 32:09were announced back in December and started having war games.
- 32:14They'd have, you know, different groups play Fox and CBS while
- 32:19NBC was sitting in here trying to get in their heads, trying to
- 32:22figure out exactly what the, you know, each network wanted to do
- 32:26and what their strategies were. And, and that way they can
- 32:28really, really fit well. And you know, one of the things
- 32:31kind of left on the cutting room floor was I asked them
- 32:34specifically did does do you guys ever get like, you know,
- 32:39like a fantasy football draft? You ever say yes, you know, I
- 32:42can't believe it fell to us or, or, or no, you know, oh man, you
- 32:46know, you got me right. One pick earlier.
- 32:48And they're like, yes, but we'll never tell you which one.
- 32:52Maybe maybe in a few years if we're revisiting it.
- 32:54But you know, that really was fascinating because there are
- 32:57times when they everything you want to do it, it's just one
- 33:00step out of your control or or falls right to you.
- 33:03It's that that also is fascinating to me.
- 33:06You also wrote last week, and what was a busy week for you,
- 33:09Doc, about the new and improved Iowa offense.
- 33:11At least that's the hope with Mark Garnowski taking over Doc.
- 33:15It just comes into my mind so often when Garnowski comes up,
- 33:18he wasn't in the portal yet, yet you brought up his name as the
- 33:21kind of guy, if he would enter the portal, that's who Iowa
- 33:24needs. And then it happens very quickly
- 33:26that it all came together. It just feels like Doc would
- 33:28talk. Welcome to you.
- 33:29This is about as close as a perfect relationship as I was
- 33:33going to find, at least in the current structure at the
- 33:34quarterback position. Yeah, right place, right time
- 33:38right now. I mean, I think he is he's
- 33:41perfect for what Iowa wants to do.
- 33:43He's he can make every throw. And you know, Lester wants to go
- 33:47deep more often than they did because they didn't have anybody
- 33:49could do it. And he's accurate.
- 33:52He's tough. He's physically could do all
- 33:54those things and, and, and provide leadership and, and
- 33:57swagger. And you know, I, I mean, they've
- 33:59had various players be able to do some of that.
- 34:02I mean, I think Spencer had a lot of swagger and, and, but he
- 34:05just wasn't really accurate enough and couldn't run and, and
- 34:08Mark can run. He's very good running
- 34:10quarterback. He has the 37 run machine
- 34:12touchdowns and you know, and as well as what, 90 some odd, I
- 34:16think, well, maybe more of that passing touchdown.
- 34:19So you've got the right quarterback for your system and
- 34:22can do everything. And then you throw on the two of
- 34:25the best returning lineman in the country and Logan Jones and
- 34:29Jennings dunker and some other pieces.
- 34:31And, and this really looks like a a team that can take a major
- 34:35step forward as it did last year.
- 34:36You know, they went from 15.4 points per game to 27 seven.
- 34:40And so that was a pretty big jump.
- 34:43And I, I think they're more than capable of making it.
- 34:45You know, maybe they'll fall down a little bit in the running
- 34:48game because you don't have Caleb Johnson, but having a
- 34:50quarterback like Mark Gronowski will more than make up for it.
- 34:53And, you know, wouldn't be surprised if they nudge this
- 34:56over not just over 30 points a game.
- 34:58And you know, maybe they maybe they even get in the
- 35:01neighborhood of the high three hundreds, maybe even cross the
- 35:03400 barrier and yards per game. And if they can do that, then
- 35:06this, this will be a very potent offense.
- 35:09Did Tony Petiti take you up on your offer to to talk as you put
- 35:12out there last week? I'm surprised we haven't heard
- 35:15anything from the conference talk.
- 35:17Maybe it's apparent that that's what they want and we'll just
- 35:19let the SEC be be seen as the bad guy in all of this.
- 35:23And Sankey's willing to play that role.
- 35:25He's doing a very good job of it because everybody is pissed off
- 35:28at him for the most part. But nothing for Petiti as of
- 35:32yet, right? No, I even had a long
- 35:35conversation on Friday night because I kept pressing it, You
- 35:38know that. Hey, everybody else is talking
- 35:41about you guys. You're the ones that are now
- 35:43looking like the bad guy because he introduced this rule, you
- 35:46know, this structure for the College Football Playoff.
- 35:49You know, the four automatics for them in the SEC 2 for the
- 35:53Big 12 and ACC. And I'm, I'm actually writing
- 35:56something about that as you know, as we speak, although I
- 35:59stopped typing, you know, for the few minutes when I'm on the
- 36:01phone. But but a lot of that, not the
- 36:06the numbers really won't change that much for the Big 10,
- 36:08whether they go to four or they go to open.
- 36:11But they they have a there's a significant amount of distrust
- 36:14on the Big 10 for the selection committee and the way it's kind
- 36:17of been treated in the past. And it goes back to, you know,
- 36:20the example I'm using is 2018 and this is a bowl game of all
- 36:24things. But when Penn State got stacked
- 36:28behind Florida and LSU and and Florida played two group 2 FCS
- 36:33opponents and then two other opponents in the non conference
- 36:36that didn't have winning records.
- 36:37And Penn State plays ACC divisional champ and 11 and two
- 36:41team and then plays a nine game league schedule, you know, plays
- 36:45three teams ranked in the top ten and and still falls behind,
- 36:49has the same record. And it's just like, well, what
- 36:51are we doing for all of this? You know, we got a nine game
- 36:53schedule, we bumped all this stuff up and yet here we are.
- 36:56So that's kind of where the roots of the distrust lie with
- 36:59with the selection committee. And that's kind of why they want
- 37:02to take take out some of the subjectivity, I guess you could
- 37:05say, and and make it just uniform that way.
- 37:08And we'll see if if they get something similar to that.
- 37:12I mean, right now that, you know, all the momentum's on a
- 37:14511, but that favors the SEC more than anybody else.
- 37:19I mean, the Big 12 would have only gotten one team last year.
- 37:23If that would have happened, they would have at least gotten
- 37:242 with this philosophy. And the, the SEC traditionally,
- 37:28you know, even though it plays only 8 league games and a lot of
- 37:31times, in fact, looking at it this year, they only have three
- 37:36teams play 10 power 5 opponents, power 4 opponents only three out
- 37:41of their 16. And in the Big 10, it's what,
- 37:4412? But the SEC somehow says it's
- 37:48got a better strength of schedule.
- 37:50And so that that's something that they, they're really
- 37:52combating And, and so we'll see what happens.
- 37:54I think the Big 10 just wants to be a little bit quiet.
- 37:57I I disagree with that, but that's their prerogative that
- 38:00say and do what they want. Doc, good stuff.
- 38:02We will look for that piece that you're typing as we well as we
- 38:06spoke, as you said, you put it on the back burner.
- 38:08But back to work Doc Thanks for doing this for us.
- 38:11We will read you as we always do with the Athletic.
- 38:13Thank you, Scott Dockerman. All right.
- 38:15Thanks guys. Appreciate it you.
- 38:17Do the same Scott Dockerman as we check in on a variety of
- 38:20topics. Take your time out, come back,
- 38:22finish our #1 Miller and Condon, Iowa Sports Radio Network, our
- 38:29final couple of minutes, first hour of the program.
- 38:32Miller in Condon with you until 2:00.
- 38:34The drive coming up, Heather and Lucas will be with you from 2:00
- 38:39until 5:00. Well, college football.
- 38:41Have you studied? Did you get into any of the
- 38:43totals from over the weekend that were released?
- 38:46Do you have wind totals? No, no.
- 38:48I mean, they've been out there at some other.
- 38:49Books, right? Yeah, Circa put theirs out.
- 38:51I started to, you know, take it a little dabble into some of
- 38:54them just killing some. It was a weird weekend.
- 38:57It was a weird weekend. I watched 1 baseball game after
- 39:00another. But kind of gives you affords
- 39:03you an opportunity to maybe not concentrate quite as much on the
- 39:06television screen. So just trying to find some
- 39:09stuff to bet. Somebody called us during the
- 39:10break and said your Clemson ticket to the prices going the
- 39:13other. Way.
- 39:14Caesar's 12:50 apparently 15 to one at Draft Kings.
- 39:18We got it. NI got 22.
- 39:20What'd you get, 2020? Five.
- 39:22It was 20 something. Yeah.
- 39:24So go Tigers. Go Tigers.
- 39:26We're Clemson fans and we'll get the Battle of Death Valley to
- 39:29begin the season. LSU, Clemson.
- 39:31That's going to be great it. Is I can't believe we're not
- 39:33getting Texas, Ohio State at night on Sunday night, right?
- 39:36I mean, come on, do what's best for the sport.
- 39:38No, they don't. I know.
- 39:39Yeah, I know. Because, well, you know who
- 39:42Texas has coming up after. That it's got to be nobody
- 39:45because the, the Big Noon kickoff is well, they're,
- 39:48they're ESPN, though. Well, who do they have?
- 39:50So Texas, after that road trip to Columbus, they come home and
- 39:54they didn't want a short week. No, no, no.
- 39:56Because here comes to town. Jacksonville State.
- 39:59San Jose State, the Spartans make their way to Austin and yet
- 40:03can't have a short week. We'll see it because then after
- 40:07that, here's the gauntlet that the Longhorns, then after that,
- 40:09that. Give it to me.
- 40:10After San Jose State invades, here come the miners out of
- 40:14Utah. And you think that's tough?
- 40:16I do. Well, here come the Bearcats
- 40:17with AK. That's right, Sam Houston State
- 40:20comes to town before a bye week. And then Oklahoma.
- 40:23No, I'm still not. There still not there.
- 40:26They do go to Florida before the match up in the Cotton Bowl
- 40:28against Oklahoma. Now, the SEC schedule is
- 40:31daunting, to be fair. And then when they get into it,
- 40:34yeah. At Florida, Oklahoma, at
- 40:38Kentucky, at Mississippi State, Vandy at Georgia, Arkansas A&M.
- 40:43Yeah, there's a. Pretty soft metal in there
- 40:45though, Trent. Well.
- 40:46You can get some wins there under Texas.
- 40:51Are they not favoured to win at all?
- 40:53If they're not, they're first, they're right up there.
- 40:55Second or third choice. I'll believe it when I see it.
- 40:59Maybe we'll see it this year. We will find out.
- 41:01We'll talk baseball when we come back.
- 41:04Matt Snyder, CBSSports.com and Trent and I will talk Major
- 41:09League Baseball. Bussy still to come on Iowa
- 41:12State, Miller and Condon, Iowa Sports Radio Network.
