Latest / DEEP INSIGHT / Multiple airports refuse to play Kristi Noem video blaming Democrats for government shutdown
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: The federal government has been shut down for more than
- 0:03Speaker 1: two weeks, and the White House is using the levers
- 0:05Speaker 1: of the federal government in effect to blame Democrats, and
- 0:09Speaker 1: that is coming, in fact to your TSA lines.
- 0:14Speaker 2: Democrats in Congress refuse to fund the federal government and
- 0:17Speaker 2: because of this, many of our operations are impacted and
- 0:21Speaker 2: most of our TSA employees are working without pay.
- 0:24Speaker 1: So the White House rolled out this video from DHS
- 0:27Speaker 1: Secretary Christino to be plated at airports, and several of
- 0:30Speaker 1: those airports are refusing, including Portland, and a statement to CNN,
- 0:34Speaker 1: the operator of Portland International says, we did not consent
- 0:37Speaker 1: to playing the video in its current form, as we
- 0:39Speaker 1: believe the Hatch Act clearly prohibits use of public assets
- 0:43Speaker 1: for political purposes and messaging. So the greater question to
- 0:48Speaker 1: ask is why the Trump administration is using government resources
- 0:51Speaker 1: to cast political blame. I was talking with the documentary
- 0:54Speaker 1: filmmaker Raoul Peck. He's done a new work on George Orwell,
- 0:59Speaker 1: and Heck calls us kind of move or Well in.
- 1:04Speaker 3: Yeah, but there is something that we can call the truth,
- 1:08Speaker 3: you know, even a mathematical truth. That's why we call
- 1:12Speaker 3: the film two plus two equal five, because we have
- 1:16Speaker 3: a number of people who wants you to believe that
- 1:19Speaker 3: two plus two equal five, and who can get you confused,
- 1:23Speaker 3: because when it's an voice of authority who comes on
- 1:28Speaker 3: TV and tells you, you know what, as of today,
- 1:31Speaker 3: two plus two equal five, and by the time you
- 1:35Speaker 3: start to understand, wait, wait a minute, that's not what
- 1:40Speaker 3: I remember, and the time is gone and you already submerge. Yes, bye.
- 1:47Speaker 3: By what you call the propaganda.
- 1:49Speaker 1: Basically, submerge is a good word.
- 1:51Speaker 4: Yeah, it does feel like the water is rising.
- 1:55Speaker 3: Sometimes that was the plan. Let's flood the zone.
- 1:59Speaker 1: Group chat is back, Michelle. I want to start with
- 2:01Speaker 1: you because I also noticed if you call the White
- 2:03Speaker 1: House hotline, Caroline Levitt pops up and says, hello, America.
- 2:07Speaker 1: The Democrats so don't want to fund the government because
- 2:10Speaker 1: they want to fund healthcare for illegal immigrants. It's a
- 2:12Speaker 1: very specific line. Can you talk about how they're using
- 2:16Speaker 1: wherever they can to spread this message?
- 2:18Speaker 4: That's right, and it's not just there. I mean government
- 2:19Speaker 4: websites were getting this banner splashed across them. You couldn't
- 2:22Speaker 4: miss it. It's a big red banner that had the
- 2:24Speaker 4: same message started the first week of the shutdown, if
- 2:28Speaker 4: you emailed the Press office at the White House, you
- 2:30Speaker 4: would get an automated response. And my understanding is that
- 2:32Speaker 4: spread to other offices in the administration. There were some
- 2:35Speaker 4: workers at the Education Department who said that without their knowledge,
- 2:38Speaker 4: their own out of office replies were fashion into a
- 2:41Speaker 4: message like this. But this is all kind of in
- 2:44Speaker 4: concert with the way the Trump administration has tried to
- 2:47Speaker 4: put Mexicum pressure wherever they can and use political communication
- 2:51Speaker 4: or political style communication wherever.
- 2:53Speaker 1: Can I ask my messaging folks about this. I'm sure
- 2:56Speaker 1: there are consultants who would love to fantasize about putting
- 2:59Speaker 1: their message of where they can. The Hatch Act actually
- 3:02Speaker 1: says maybe it can't. And I thought it was interesting
- 3:04Speaker 1: that Portland Airport authorities brought it up.
- 3:06Speaker 5: So I actually make these ads for Congressmen. And when
- 3:09Speaker 5: we make these ads for Congressman and for those of
- 3:11Speaker 5: you at home, the congressional budget for each House office,
- 3:14Speaker 5: they get around three hundred and fifty thousand dollars to
- 3:17Speaker 5: communicate with their constitutions about what's going on in Washington
- 3:19Speaker 5: and what is Let's say you have a VA claim
- 3:21Speaker 5: or you're having problems with some other atmosh something to
- 3:24Speaker 5: do with the government. But in that a lawyer has
- 3:26Speaker 5: to see it to make sure that I'm not violating
- 3:29Speaker 5: the Hatch Act by targeting Democrats targeting Republicans. I can't
- 3:32Speaker 5: even send a mailer based off of your political party.
- 3:35Speaker 5: It has to be to the general public because it's
- 3:37Speaker 5: your government money.
- 3:38Speaker 1: Yeah, it's funny the documentarian is doing something on George Orwell.
- 3:42Speaker 1: And I know a lot of people have read nineteen
- 3:43Speaker 1: eighty four. If you haven't, aw's the time. But one
- 3:46Speaker 1: of the concerns is about telling people. You can use
- 3:49Speaker 1: the term propaganda, but basically telling people what you're seeing.
- 3:53Speaker 1: The government is shut down, you're standing in line at
- 3:55Speaker 1: the airport, your workers aren't being paid is a very
- 3:58Speaker 1: specific person's fault, according to me, And that is the
- 4:01Speaker 1: fact instead of the fact of lawmakers are having a
- 4:05Speaker 1: bipartisan fight and that's prevented everyone from being paid.
- 4:09Speaker 2: There's two things here. One, as we all know, and
- 4:11Speaker 2: I say this all the time, that the Trump administration
- 4:14Speaker 2: is one hundred percent willing to fight anything in the courts.
- 4:18Speaker 2: But we're sitting here talking about exactly what they want
- 4:21Speaker 2: us to be talking about, which is Democrats being blamed
- 4:24Speaker 2: for the shutdown. I understand we're doing it different ways,
- 4:26Speaker 2: but that's what they care about. So they're winning in
- 4:29Speaker 2: their mind, and they'll fight this in the courts, which
- 4:32Speaker 2: everything's being fought in the courts. I need to say
- 4:35Speaker 2: one more thing about this. He was talking to me
- 4:37Speaker 2: this weekend about being in East Texas. The American people
- 4:40Speaker 2: do not want our government to be shut down, and
- 4:43Speaker 2: our leaders on both sides need to get their act
- 4:46Speaker 2: together and get back to work.
- 4:48Speaker 1: I think this is to your point. That person you're
- 4:50Speaker 1: talking about who thinks it's horrible, if they're standing in
- 4:54Speaker 1: line at the airport, would they be looking up at
- 4:56Speaker 1: that and be like, oh, yeah, that's that's true.
- 4:58Speaker 2: Why I think that they annoyed on both sides. This
- 5:01Speaker 2: is why the Congress has such a low approval rating.
- 5:04Speaker 2: I mean, in general, get back to work. Figure it out.
- 5:08Speaker 2: You can't have Republicans saying their thing. You can't have
- 5:11Speaker 2: Schumer saying this is better for Democrats if it stays
- 5:14Speaker 2: shut down, it just needs to stop.
