- 0:07On June 16, 1957, the St. Louis Cardinals faced the Brooklyn Dodgers for a doubleheader at Ebbets Field in Brooklyn.
- 0:14The cards were coached by Fred Hutchinson and entered the game with a 30-23 record.
- 0:19This was the final season for the Dodgers in Brooklyn before moving to Los Angeles, and they were coached by Walt Alston.
- 0:24This is game one of the twin bill featuring Brooklyn announcers Vince Cully, Jerry Doggett, and Al Helfer.
- 0:30Unfortunately, the recording of this game is missing the final out.
- 0:34Rest assured, there were no last-minute heroics after the tape cuts off.
- 0:37The final out was a routine ground ball to first base unassisted.
- 0:41Enjoy the game.
- 0:42Dan Muzey will hit third. He'll be at first base.
- 0:45Dan hitting fourth, right fielder Del Annis.
- 0:48Center fielder Ken Boyer will hit fifth.
- 0:52Dan hitting sixth will be Wally Moon in left field.
- 0:55Obie Landis will do the catching. He'll hit seventh.
- 0:58Eddie Castro will be at third base.
- 1:01And the pitcher will be Little Murray Dixon.
- 1:03The veteran right-hander has won three. He has lost two.
- 1:06He has no record with the Brooklyn Dodgers yet this year. He's on or with them.
- 1:11On the last time, he's 18 and 28. Last year, he had a one-in-five record with Brooklyn.
- 1:16The batting orders are now being taken up to home plate with the umpires,
- 1:19Chakor, Landis, Baker, and Daskoly officiating.
- 1:22It'll be Chakor behind the plate, Landis at first.
- 1:25Baker will be at second base and Daskoly will be at third.
- 1:29For the Brooklyn Dodgers, they'll line up this way this afternoon.
- 1:32Gil Hodge is still out nursing bruised ribs.
- 1:35Gillian leads off. He'll be at second base.
- 1:38Hitting number two will be third baseman Pee Wee Reese.
- 1:41Hitting third, center fielder Duke Snyder.
- 1:44Elmer Fallow remains in the cleanup spot. He'll be in left field.
- 1:48At Gino Somoli, the right fielder, he'll be hitting fifth.
- 1:51Hitting sixth, Roy Campanella to catch the first game.
- 1:54Hitting seventh, John Roseborough will be back again at first base for his third straight day.
- 1:59Charlie Neal will be the shortstop and the pitcher will be young Don Drysdale.
- 2:03Drysdale has one fire this year, has lost three, and with St. Louis, he is 1-0.
- 2:08He defeated the Cardinals 10-4 at St. Louis back on the 20th day of May
- 2:12in his only previous lifetime start against them.
- 2:15He pitched out with only seven innings and ran out of gas.
- 2:17In 73 innings this season, Drysdale has allowed only 60 hits with 20 walks and 58 strikeouts
- 2:24and has an earned run average of 2.71.
- 2:27His 1956 earned run average was 2.64.
- 2:32The Brooklyn Dodgers coming out now to take the field.
- 2:35And as the day starts, we should like to remind you that Milwaukee is riding in first place in the National League.
- 2:42Since the 92nd half game off the face, then comes Brooklyn and Philadelphia Tries for third and fourth.
- 2:46They're two games behind.
- 2:48Philadelphia is actually two and a half behind.
- 2:51St. Louis is two and a half games behind.
- 2:54So they are the ones that are really tied.
- 2:57Philadelphia and St. Louis Brooklyn standing in third place in the National League.
- 3:00Philadelphia and St. Louis actually tied for the three and four positions.
- 3:05So we're getting ready to get this one underway.
- 3:08We're expecting a big afternoon of it, a real shape of afternoon.
- 3:12And now stepping up will be a down blessing game to lead things off for St. Louis as Don Drysdale has taken the mound.
- 3:21Drysdale throwing a few pitches down to get the feel of it.
- 3:24Frank Secoy the plate umpire standing just outside waiting to call the first batter up.
- 3:28And on this fine, sun shiny afternoon with a slight wind blowing in from the hard right field,
- 3:33we're going to get the first game of this doubleheader started.
- 3:35This will be the getaway set of games for the Brooklyn Dodgers.
- 3:38They'll be showing up for a game tomorrow night with the Mild League leading Cincinnati Redlegs.
- 3:44And stepping up to the microphone to bring us the play-by-play for the F&M Shape of Brewing Company Brooklyn on this first game of the doubleheader.
- 3:51Here's the guy who has just said that this is the greatest day he has ever seen.
- 3:55Vince Goff.
- 3:56Thank you. Hi everybody.
- 3:58And it sure is.
- 3:59We certainly hope things are going just right for you, whatever you may be, for things are just fine right here.
- 4:06Don Blasingame, Alvin Dark, and Stan Musial.
- 4:09Should anybody get on, maybe we'll see Dell in it.
- 4:12We have a lot of Indians around the ballpark today.
- 4:14Just to add to the proceedings, we'll tell you about them.
- 4:16Members of the Shinnecock Tribe who will put on a tribal war dance in between games.
- 4:22They gave out tomahawks to manager Austin, Peewee Reese, and our good friend Jim Murray.
- 4:28And also a big Indian headdress to Herbie Sharpman, the photographer.
- 4:32Fastball to Don Blasingame in for the strike on one.
- 4:36I wish I could find the big chief of the Shinnecock's in between games while we'd have them do the, well, not the rain dance, the cool weather dance.
- 4:45If you know any Shinnecock Indians, give them a call.
- 4:48The strike one, the surprising game is outside, one ball, one strike.
- 4:53Let's make a pact, okay?
- 4:55From now on, it's just a nice day.
- 4:58It's not too hot, not too cold, it's just right.
- 5:01Just try and forget all about it.
- 5:03Blasingame batting 298.
- 5:05Two home runs, 28 RBIs.
- 5:08Dyesdale ready and the right-handed delivers.
- 5:10Fastball fouled away, one and two.
- 5:12Nice crowd on hand.
- 5:14And friends, if you're anywhere in the vicinity of the ballpark and you decided, well, not too much to do around the house,
- 5:19well, we still have seats for you out in left field in the shade of the upper deck.
- 5:24A nice breeze beginning to ripple up from back of the right field corner and slanting over to left.
- 5:29I'd like to have you with us.
- 5:32Dyesdale checking signs with Campanella, one and two, the count to Don Blasingame.
- 5:37Dyesdale ready and the overhand curve cut on and this strike three and that thing looks sharply down at Blasingame's feet.
- 5:45Oh, Don Dyesdale starts off on the right foot, strikes out Don Blasingame and it brings up Alvin Dye.
- 5:52Alvin Dye batting 315 with two home runs, 26 runs batted in.
- 6:05Dyesdale ready and delivers and the curve over for the strike on one.
- 6:09Frank Sakoi, the plate umpire, Stan Landis at first, Bill Baker at second, Frank Daskoly on the line at third.
- 6:18He knows with two X National League managers in the coaching line.
- 6:22Strike one, Pitch to Dark, fastball, a line drive foul outside of first, on two.
- 6:27Mr. Terry Moore coaching at first, one of the truly great fielding centerfielders of all time.
- 6:33And around at third, a great third baseman, the smilingest man in the National League I guess, Stan Hax.
- 6:43On two to Alvin Dark, one out on the first, no score on deck, Stan Musial.
- 6:54Dyesdale ready and the strike two, Pitch, fastball at the knees, call, strike three.
- 6:58So Mr. Dyesdale has chopped down two men, Blasingame and Dark on strikes.
- 7:10Stan Musial being announced to the crowd and gets an ovation.
- 7:14Hey, Spiderfellas.
- 7:18Stan might tear the walls down, but they like him very much over here in Brooklyn.
- 7:23He's batting.357 with 13 home runs, 47 runs batted in.
- 7:27Fastball hit to the hole and through and Mr. Stan is hitting 15 straight, not do.
- 7:33A Musial single strike with two out on the first inning.
- 7:38Hey, somehow you might have missed it.
- 7:41Waves and Ray Krohn, Danny O'Connell and Bobby Thompson to the Giants and the Giants sent off a redhead, Mr. Chamedeep to Milwaukee.
- 7:50Understand Ray Krohn is going to be put right into service today, playing the pitch for the Giants.
- 7:56Stan Musial in first, two out and Dell enters the batter.
- 8:00Dell hitting.257, Dyesdale ready and the fastball is low, ball one.
- 8:04And this was eight home runs, 35 runs batted in.
- 8:08You figured out the Braves, of course, this is more or less what the people around baseball would certainly call a one-year move.
- 8:14It's not anything for the great future, but the Braves want to win so badly this year, so they made the deal.
- 8:21The one-on-fifth tennis is golfed at and hit up along third foul, one and one.
- 8:26Meanwhile, the Giants get Danny O'Connell and they'll probably play him at third.
- 8:31Danny's played second, short and third and I think most people would agree he's better at third base.
- 8:37Here Bobby Thompson to play in the outfield.
- 8:40And they have a fine young pitcher, Mr. Ray Krohn, who could very well be the sleeper in the deal.
- 8:46The one-on-fifth tennis, curveball, fouled away again outside of third, one and two.
- 8:51Allen Northen going back through Stan Musial's private war against Brooklyn pitching, finds that that base hit the right field was his second single, that's all, against Brooklyn this year.
- 9:08He has hit four doubles and two home runs.
- 9:11Fastball hit to the hole and flew in the left field for the base hit.
- 9:14Vallow comes on to field it and so Delennis singles to left.
- 9:18Drysdale at the striking out blasting game in dark now gives up consecutive singles to Musial and Ennis.
- 9:33Kenny Boyer batting 2.49. He has six home runs, 19 runs batted in.
- 9:38Playing center field, doing a good job.
- 9:41It's amazing the Cardinals had two of the more prominent young rookies breaking into the National League at one time, both in center field.
- 9:49And you figured, well, their problems there were certainly solved.
- 9:52Instead, Rapulski, the left fielder, he went.
- 9:57Bill Burton, who was the fine center fielder, he left.
- 10:00Wally Moon, who was the fine center fielder, is now on left.
- 10:03So the third baseman, the all-star third baseman, Kenny Boyer is now the center fielder for the Cardinals.
- 10:08Fastball lined to left field, Vallow comes on, it's in for the base hit.
- 10:12Here's Musial around third coming to the plate. He'll score easily.
- 10:16And so with two out, the Cardinals hit Drysdale for three consecutive base hits and they have a run.
- 10:22Boyer singles to left.
- 10:25Musial scoring one-nothing Cardinals.
- 10:29All right, the batter is Wally Moon.
- 10:32Drysdale delivers fastball for the strike on one.
- 10:34Moon batting 280 as 12 home runs, 31 runs batted in.
- 10:41Dell at the second base, Kenny Boyer at first.
- 10:44Musial over with the run.
- 10:46So after striking out Blazingaim and Dye, the Cardinals come up with three consecutive base hits.
- 10:59Drysdale turns on the rubber, now he's ready. The strike one fits, change up, cut on is a high pop fly.
- 11:05Charlie Neal backing out on the grass.
- 11:07Vallow charging in, Neal is calling and makes the play.
- 11:14On the top of the first inning, the Cardinals come up with one run on three hits, all with two out, and they lead two men.
- 11:19At the end of half an inning, the Cardinals won and the Dodgers will be coming up.
- 11:24Then ready for the last half of the first inning, old boy.
- 11:29Okay, Jim Gilliam, Beewee Reece, and Duke Snyder, last of the first one-nothing Cardinals.
- 11:34Murray Dixon, been right hot on this Eastern swing for St. Laura's.
- 11:39He has three consecutive complete game victories.
- 11:43He leads the majors.
- 11:45I wonder why I got that line. Hold it.
- 11:47The first pitch now to Gilliam is outside, ball one.
- 11:51He beat, let's see, seven to one at Milwaukee, six nothing at Pittsburgh, five-two at Philadelphia.
- 11:57He's not started against Brooklyn this year.
- 12:01Murray Dixon against Don Drysdale in the first game and Willard Schmidt going in the second.
- 12:08Dixon ready, Murray delivers one-oh, and the pitch is cut on and filed away, one-on-one.
- 12:13Murray Dixon, of course, a fine pitcher with the Cardinals, then with Pittsburgh.
- 12:20He used to throw just about every pitch in the book.
- 12:22He threw fastballs, curveballs, sliders, change-ups, screwballs, knuckleballs.
- 12:29You come up with it, he had it, sinkers.
- 12:31Now he's more or less staying with the knucklers.
- 12:34Knuckler dancing outside, ball two, two-and-one.
- 12:44Cincinnati did not score in the first inning, so the Giants hit back now.
- 12:49Two-and-one, the count to Jim Gilliam.
- 12:50Dixon ready and delivers.
- 12:51Knuckler and his a line drive to right field, it's a clean base hit.
- 12:56Jim Gilliam opens up and jumps on a knuckleball and singles to right.
- 13:04The Dodgers were quite surprised.
- 13:06They faced Dixon one time in relief.
- 13:08He got two men out.
- 13:11And they noticed that night out at St. Louis, and they fonded Dixon a little bit, too,
- 13:15the fact that all he threw were knuckleballs.
- 13:20We'll see if they can guess correctly, and if that's all he's throwing,
- 13:23the Dodger book will have to be changed on Murray Dixon.
- 13:27Gilliam inching off the bag at first and usual holding as Reese steps in batting 232.
- 13:32Dixon ready, there's the knuckler, makes him move out of there, ball one, one-and-oh.
- 13:37Reese has one home run.
- 13:42Six RBIs.
- 13:52Eddie Casco on the edge of the infield grass at first.
- 13:56Dixon's traveling the rubber, now gets up on top.
- 13:59One-nulling Cardinals, last of the first inning.
- 14:02It's a high up fly, going out is Dark.
- 14:04It could be a little bit of trouble as he makes a complete turn coming in as Boyer to help out,
- 14:08but Boyer just watches now as Dark takes it.
- 14:11Alvin going out into left center, making a complete turn to make the play.
- 14:16One out and here's the do.
- 14:25Good batting, 256.
- 14:27He has 11 home runs, 26 runs batted in.
- 14:33On deck, Elmavalo.
- 14:37The infield way over shifted around toward first, Dark over to his left to plug up the middle.
- 14:42The outfield deep to right.
- 14:44Knuckler, the line drive, deep to right field is going to be halfway up the screen.
- 14:48The ball is finally fielded by Ennis, holding at third is Gilliam Snyder.
- 14:52Slides at second, he's out at second.
- 14:58Oh, Duke Snyder is out at second base on a strong throw by Del Ennis.
- 15:03To second baseman Don Blasingame, and going around to third base is Jim Gilliam.
- 15:16It gives Snyder a base hit and he's outstretching.
- 15:19Gilliam advancing to third on the play.
- 15:23Gilliam going, but nevertheless the ball had hit and came right back into Del Ennis' hands,
- 15:27and Junior had no chance to come to the plate.
- 15:40Two down, Gilliam at third base, and Elmavalo the batter, hitting 346.
- 15:45He has four of the eyes.
- 15:52Dixon ready, winds and delivers, Knuckler low and inside, and Landryd is fighting that baseball to death.
- 15:58I tell you, do you ever see a goalkeeper in hockey?
- 16:01Hobie's doing everything possible to prevent it from squirting through to the backstop
- 16:05and then of course allowing Gilliam to come over.
- 16:08Oh, what a battle he's giving that ball.
- 16:11Ball players call it boxing a few.
- 16:14The 1-0 pitch to Landryd.
- 16:16Knuckler outside and Hobie stayed with it to grab it, ball two.
- 16:21Landryd looks into the dugout, just shakes his head and gets back behind the plate.
- 16:28Elmavalo waiting, two and all to count.
- 16:31Gilliam at third base, we're in the bottom of the first inning.
- 16:33Cardinals one, Dodgers trying to pick up a run and tie it up.
- 16:42Dixon staring in, now Murray's ready, looks to Gilliam, the 2-0 pitch to Elmavalo.
- 16:46Fastball cut on and a little pop-up, just up along third, coming down for it is Casco and makes the play.
- 16:53So Elmavalo pops up to Eddie Casco and the Dodgers have their bid denied.
- 16:57In the first inning, no runs, two hits.
- 17:00One man left on as Snyder is outstretching.
- 17:02At the end of one inning, the Cardinals one, the Dodgers nothing.
- 17:06Dyesdale ready and delivers.
- 17:07Fastball cut on and missed for a strike, and I imagine Hobie up there now hitting.
- 17:11It must be a pleasure to him to see a fastball.
- 17:14After handling Murray Dixon's knucklers throughout the first inning.
- 17:17Hobie batting 182, he has four runs batted in.
- 17:21Dyesdale back again, the overhand curve misses outside one and one.
- 17:25Say before we were talking to you about the Milwaukee Braves and the New York Giants trade,
- 17:30and it's conceivable with a lot of folks perhaps getting up very early this morning and heading out,
- 17:34you might have missed the Yankee trade.
- 17:37The 1-1 pitch, fastball cut on is a high foul.
- 17:40To the left of the plate, Campadella is calling as he shields his eyes from the glare and makes the play.
- 17:45Well, not one away.
- 17:47Well, the Yankees in Kansas City had themselves another trade.
- 17:50The Yankees sent to Kansas City, second baseman Billy Martin, infielder, outfielder Woody Held,
- 17:57who played the infield a great deal at Denver but during the spring played a lot of center field.
- 18:01He has a fine arm.
- 18:03Ralph Terry, a young pitcher, and Bob Martin, N-A-R-T-Y-N,
- 18:07whom the Yankees I think considered the second fastest man on the squad, back of mantle, an outfielder.
- 18:13Now I'll tell you who the Yankees got from Kansas City.
- 18:16The pitch to Eddie Casco is down low, ball one.
- 18:19The Yankees got Harry Simpson.
- 18:21Harry had a rough spring.
- 18:23He had chipped a bone and his ankle was out quite a while.
- 18:25He's an infielder and outfielder, place first base when he's in the infield.
- 18:30The 1-0 pitch to Eddie Casco, fastball missing, ball two.
- 18:34Reinal Duren, and of course that's a name to strike fear in the hearts of any batter.
- 18:39He is very, very fast, but he also has, well, not too good eyesight.
- 18:45Very wild.
- 18:48The 2-0 pitch to Casco, fastball, bounce-away foul, 2-1.
- 18:52So Harry Simpson, then Reinal Duren, the Yankees faced Duren this year,
- 18:56and Gil McDougal came up with quite a quote about Duren.
- 19:00McDougal said Duren's going to beat a lot of clubs just using fear psychology.
- 19:04Gil, of course, honest enough to admit that you are afraid up there when a fellow throws that hard
- 19:09and you're not too sure where the ball's going.
- 19:112-1 pitch to the curve outside, ball three, 3-1.
- 19:16The Yankees also got a young outfielder who played some shadow field for Kansas City,
- 19:20Jim Frisone out of the Texas League, and they got an infielder,
- 19:24played a lot of second base by the name of Milt Graff, G-R-A-F-F.
- 19:283-1 pitch to fastball low, ball four, so Eddie Casco walked with one out in the second inning,
- 19:34Cardinals leading 1-0.
- 19:36So thumbnail sketches on the men.
- 19:38To Kansas City, Billy Martin, Woody Hill, Ralph Terry, and Bob Martin.
- 19:43From Kansas City to the Yankees, Harry Simpson, Reinal Duren, Jim Frisone, and Milt Graff.
- 19:55Murray Dixon, not a bad hitting pitcher, hitting.222 with four runs batted in,
- 20:00up there with one out, and Eddie Casco at first base.
- 20:04Cardinals have a run, Dodgers nothing.
- 20:06We're in the second inning, the first game of a double header, a big day in baseball.
- 20:11Geisdale already takes a peek at first, whirls and fires over there, and Casco's back.
- 20:16Eddie's fast, the Dodgers know about him.
- 20:21Geisdale turns on the rubber now and goes set.
- 20:24The pitch to Dixon, sidearm fastball over for the strike on one.
- 20:29Cincinnati at bat at the Polar Grounds have already picked up three runs.
- 20:33They are still swinging and lead the Giants 3-0 in the second.
- 20:38It's 2-1, Milwaukee over the Phillies at the end of five,
- 20:41and 2-0 Cubs over Pirates at the end of four and a half.
- 20:44Strike one pitch is bounced slowly down to Gilliam,
- 20:47with players at second, they get the force, the throw to first is not in time.
- 20:51Small wasn't it sharply enough to get the double play.
- 20:54Fourth play, four to six.
- 21:00Two down in the second inning in the batter, leadoff man Don Brazingame,
- 21:04who struck out in the first inning.
- 21:06Went after a sharp curve that drove right down at his feet.
- 21:09Brazingame forgot his helmet, so he has to go back to the Cardinal dugout now and get one.
- 21:14Don batting 2-97.
- 21:17He's had a fine series, especially defensively, before he's been all over the field.
- 21:23The pitch is caught on a comeback here, and Drysdale stays with the hot one and throws him out at first.
- 21:28One bouncer right at the right side of Drysdale's ribs and he made his play.
- 21:33One to three.
- 21:35For the Cardinals in the second inning, no runs, no hits, they leave a man.
- 21:38At the end of an inning and a half, the Cardinals won and Brooklyn nothing.
- 21:42Now we're going to the last half, with Vinnie number two right here on the shape of broadcast.
- 21:47Addiction back to the mound for the St. Louis Cardinals.
- 21:51They're leading in the ball game one to nothing.
- 21:53They have one run on three hits.
- 21:54Brooklyn no runs on two hits.
- 21:56Brooklyn's first man will be Gino Cimelli, then Roy Campanon, then Johnny Rose Burroughs.
- 22:02Vinnie, it's going to be something this afternoon, be a doubleheader, nice one.
- 22:08I was just thinking while you were talking to the folks out and we had the thoughts or kept looking it up.
- 22:12It came very close.
- 22:14Murray Dixon will be 41 years old in August.
- 22:16That's a warm day here in New York.
- 22:19You know that Murray Dixon was pitching professional baseball when Don Drysdale was one year old.
- 22:27That's something, isn't it?
- 22:29Murray's quite a man that you could stay in the kind of shape he's in.
- 22:33The boys say, oh, when he reports to spring fanny all this, do take a shower and a shave and he's about ready.
- 22:37No, I'm not looking at you.
- 22:39I think you were.
- 22:40No, no, no.
- 22:42Heavens to Betsy.
- 22:46Gino Cimelli batting 339.
- 22:48He has eight home runs, 25 runs batted in.
- 22:51One nothing Cardinals bottom of the second.
- 22:54Cimelli, Campanella and Rose Burroughs.
- 22:57Dixon ready now and knuckles the first one way high right at Cimelli's helmet and Gino just dances away from it.
- 23:03401.
- 23:09Drysdale was born in 36.
- 23:11Dixon was pitching in 37.
- 23:14The one on pitch to Cimelli.
- 23:16It's cut on a bouncer by the mound down to dark.
- 23:18It takes it on a big hop close to first and that's it for Cimelli.
- 23:21One up, one away.
- 23:24We'll send three games from Cincinnati.
- 23:27Monday night, June the 17th.
- 23:29Wednesday night, June the 19th.
- 23:32And Thursday night, June the 20th from Cincinnati, all three.
- 23:36The air time, 8.55 for each game.
- 23:40Then a week from Monday, Monday night, June the 24th from St. Louis.
- 23:46Air time, 8.55.
- 23:50Wednesday night, June the 26th from Milwaukee.
- 23:54Air time, 8.55.
- 23:57And Sunday afternoon, June the 30th, the first game of a doubleheader from Chicago.
- 24:02Air time, 1.55.
- 24:05Cavadala up there swings at the first pitch and loops it to center.
- 24:08Kenny Boyer had no jump on the ball.
- 24:10It's going to drop in front of him for the base hit.
- 24:14Boyer seemed to just freeze momentarily.
- 24:16Perhaps he lost the ball in the white shirt background.
- 24:19Delayed its start and the ball had dropped in for the singles.
- 24:24Head off, Murray Dixon.
- 24:27Remember, all those televised ball games will be sent back to you on WOR TV, Channel 9,
- 24:32and of course all Dodger games, day and night, home and away, on WMGM Radio
- 24:37and the Brooklyn Dodgers radio network.
- 24:39So we'll be talking to you while we're away.
- 24:45Johnny Ruinsborough batting 125.
- 24:48John has one base hit in the major leagues.
- 24:50Mike Bunt against Lindy McDaniel, Friday night's game.
- 24:54Dixon's knuckleball is on the outside corner for a strike, 0-1.
- 24:58One out, bottom of the second inning.
- 25:00Cardinals 1, Dodgers nothing.
- 25:02Roy Campanella at first base.
- 25:040-1 to Johnny Ruinsborough.
- 25:06On deck, Charlie Neal.
- 25:11Dixon's bat to strike one pitch.
- 25:13Knuckleball cut on and missed, 0-2.
- 25:31Murray has to count his way now, Roseborough waiting.
- 25:34The strike two pitch to John, got that and missed, strike three and down he goes.
- 25:44I think maybe it sounds like nothing to me if I keep saying the knuckleball, knuckleball, knuckleball.
- 25:51It bothers you all, I'll stop using it for a while.
- 25:55Maybe it does.
- 25:59If we're going to flinch on a hot day like today, we're not trying to get anybody mad.
- 26:05So we'll just say Dixon pitches for a while, the very thing.
- 26:09Neal batting 273.
- 26:11Murray delivers and it's outside, 4-1.
- 26:15Neal, we have two home runs, 13 runs batted in.
- 26:24Dixon at first, two out on the second inning, Cardinals one, Dodgers nothing.
- 26:32Dixon checking signs, Murray ready, delivers and the 1-0 pitch is outside, ball two, 2-0.
- 26:42The Dodgers had two base hits in the first inning.
- 26:44Gilliams singled and after Reese had popped out, Snyder hit the screen and right.
- 26:49Delenis threw a strike to second, Snyder was out and Gilliam had to hold it first.
- 26:53And then Vallow popped up.
- 26:55Here in the second inning, Sandwich in between outs, Campanella single to center.
- 26:59Count to Charlie, Neal two balls and no strikes.
- 27:02Dixon ready and the 2-0 pitch to Charlie, cut on and missed, 2-1.
- 27:28Dixon ready and decides to throw to first, Campanella's back.
- 27:38Two out on the second, Cardinals one, Dodgers nothing, first game of a double header.
- 27:45Dixon delivers 2-1 and the pitch is cut on and bounced down to Blasding game.
- 27:49Who's up with it cleanly, goes to Musial and that's it.
- 27:52Play going 4-3.
- 27:54In the second inning, no runs, one hit, a man left on.
- 27:59The other two innings are played, the Cardinals one, the Dodgers nothing.
- 28:02Right now, Rex Rickard is making an announcement.
- 28:06We're not too sure if we can pick up his words.
- 28:08We know what he's going to say, but we'll just fill you in on it.
- 28:12Rex is now making the announcement to the folks here at Everett Field that this is Father's Day
- 28:16and we certainly want to welcome all the pappies who are here at the ballpark.
- 28:21We have our own pappy at the control.
- 28:23And we have a special Father's Day section in the upper deck, section 17, 19, and 20.
- 28:30And now we have a round of applause for all the dads here at the ballpark.
- 28:37On that corner up there in the upper deck are some of the greatest athletes of all time.
- 28:42No doubt telling their sons just how they did it years ago.
- 28:46And the sons just as proud as they can be.
- 28:48It makes quite a picture.
- 28:50Section 17, 19, and 20, we ought to kind of wrap them up a little bit.
- 28:54There's a special crowd today.
- 28:57It would be nice if there were a couple of old, nice, easy high fouls up there
- 29:01and some fathers make the catch.
- 29:03That's a great thing to see at a ballpark, to see a father catch the ball
- 29:06and turn his hand to his son and say, see what I mean?
- 29:08I used to do that all the time.
- 29:10Well, we got anything new on the scoreboard?
- 29:12Well, I babble away here.
- 29:13What about when a little eight-year-old boy catches one hand to his dad
- 29:16and says, Pop, this is for you?
- 29:18I'd say the least.
- 29:20Cincinnati in the Giants at the end of an inning and a half.
- 29:22Cincinnati 3 to Giants nothing.
- 29:24At the end of six innings and a half, it is 2-1 Milwaukee over Philadelphia.
- 29:28First game of the doublehead.
- 29:29All right, then.
- 29:30Okay, we'll get a few more scores in as dark fouls are pitched away.
- 29:330-1.
- 29:37Cubs and the Pirates, it's 2-1 Chicago at the end of five and a half innings.
- 29:41In the American League, not much to report yet.
- 29:43Don't think we're trying to slight the American League,
- 29:45but the Eastern team's about west.
- 29:47Again, with the time difference at all, we don't have too much to report.
- 29:50Yankees at Kansas City, they're not even warming up yet.
- 29:55Dyesdale ready now, delivers to dark.
- 29:57Changeup is hit off the hands foul outside of first base, 0-2.
- 30:02Washington and the White Sox are playing a doubleheader.
- 30:04That just started.
- 30:05Ramos against Wilson.
- 30:06And Washington did not score in the first inning.
- 30:09First of two, Baltimore and Cleveland.
- 30:11Johnson and Mossy.
- 30:12Three to two in favor of Baltimore at the end of three and a half innings.
- 30:17Dyesdale ready to strike two pitch.
- 30:19A changeup, reach for and tap down to short.
- 30:21Charlie Neal has the hurry.
- 30:22His off balance, throw is in time.
- 30:24Nice play by Charlie.
- 30:26Dark way out and caught on the chain, just kind of tapped it by the mound.
- 30:30Neal, who was deep, had to charge and just seemed to risk that ball over to first base.
- 30:35So dark is out, short to first.
- 30:37One up, one away, and here's Mr. Mugell.
- 30:40Dan batting a cool 360.
- 30:43He's single to right in the first inning.
- 30:44He has hit in 15 straight games.
- 30:51Dyesdale changes up and misses low and inside for one.
- 31:04Dyesdale ready, one-oh pitch to Mugell.
- 31:06Fastball, foul away, one and one.
- 31:10Philadelphia Phillies have come to life in the bottom of the seventh inning.
- 31:14They have pushed over a run to tie the Braves two and two, and the Phillies are still at bat.
- 31:19So we'll watch that for you.
- 31:20And any further report, gladly pass it along.
- 31:26Dyesdale delivers.
- 31:27Fastball hit to Neal's right.
- 31:29Charlie up with it.
- 31:30He has to make a long throw.
- 31:31It's in time.
- 31:32Oh, my goodness, Mr. Neal.
- 31:41You know that fellow can play shortstop?
- 31:43He made two plays right there that were just about telling he can do it.
- 31:47He had to charge a slow ground ball that got dark and flipped it to first.
- 31:51And that time he had been over-shifted near the bag at second, had to go to his right,
- 31:55and had to throw from the grass and got Mugell.
- 31:58Two out.
- 32:00Here's Dyesdale Ennis, who is single to left.
- 32:01Dyesdale batting 261.
- 32:03Dyesdale delivers.
- 32:04Fastball line drive off Charlie Neal's glove and on out into left field.
- 32:08Charlie tied a backhand to Bullitt and couldn't do it.
- 32:12They probably would have elected him mayor if he had held onto that one.
- 32:16Okay, Ennis singles to left, and he ripped that one.
- 32:19That's his second hit.
- 32:22Hit number four for St. Louis.
- 32:24And the batter, Kenny Boyer.
- 32:28Campanella had something to say to Dyesdale before Boyer came up.
- 32:32Well, remember, it was two out on the first inning and runners at first and second.
- 32:36Boyer's single to left, and Campanella appeared to be a little upset at whatever Dyesdale had thrown
- 32:40or where he had put it.
- 32:42And Dyesdale seemed to agree with Campanella.
- 32:44He was a little bit mad at himself for the base hit drove in the run.
- 32:47So let's see how they work on Kenny now.
- 32:49Boyer batting 253.
- 32:53Dyesdale ready and delivers overhand curve, low and outside, ball one.
- 33:02Breeze has picked up a bit.
- 33:04Kind of nice out here at the park now, coming from right field corner,
- 33:07slanting over to left.
- 33:09The 1-0 pitch to Boyer, fast ball, missing outside, ball two, 2-0.
- 33:14A lot of blue skies up above. Nice to have them with you.
- 33:262-0.
- 33:28Dyesdale ready, checks first.
- 33:30The 2-0 pitch, curve outside and backhanded nicely by Campanella.
- 33:34That thing was heading for the backstop, ball three.
- 33:41Nice crowd on hand today. It is not capacity, anything like that.
- 33:44There are some scattered empty seats in left field.
- 33:47Nevertheless, it's a nice turnout.
- 33:49Glad to have the folks here to kind of say goodbye to Brooklyn.
- 33:53Be going out on their second Western trip right after the double header.
- 33:563-0 pitch, a fast ball at the knees for ball four.
- 33:59So with 2-0, Kenny Boyer draws a walk.
- 34:02Dyesdale is advancing to second.
- 34:05Dyesdale having the 2-0 blues.
- 34:08Moon came over in the first inning with two outages and jam here in the third as Wally Moon comes up.
- 34:13Moon pops a short in the first inning.
- 34:16By the way, we're happy to announce our Schaefer Award winners.
- 34:19And the young man at shortstop who's been writing his name in capital letters defensively today,
- 34:23Mr. Charlie Neal, is one of the two award winners.
- 34:27The other pitcher, Eddie Robuck.
- 34:31The 1-0 pitch to Wally Moon is a fast ball and a bounce into the seats off third.
- 34:360-1.
- 34:43Moon batting 279.
- 34:45Cardinals 1, Dodgers nothing.
- 34:47We're in the top of the third inning, two out.
- 34:50Del Ennis at second.
- 34:51Kenny Boyer at first.
- 35:01Dyesdale ready and the strike one pitch.
- 35:03Moon swings and misses 0-2.
- 35:06I think Moon had guessed correctly that time.
- 35:09I don't know whether he just guessed at it or what.
- 35:13But Wally started to move up in the hitters box as if he expected the change and he got it.
- 35:17He swung and missed 0-2 to count.
- 35:24Dyesdale staring in.
- 35:26Runners inching away from first and second.
- 35:29The strike two pitch, curve ball inside and low ball one, one and two.
- 35:50The one and two pitch to Wally Moon, cut on a bouncing ball hit to Jim Gilliam,
- 35:54awaits for Roseborough to get to the bag, then hits him with his throw.
- 35:57So Moon goes out second to first.
- 35:59In the third inning, no runs, one hit, two men left on.
- 36:04The Cardinals have got five now and they have three innings.
- 36:06At the end of two and a half innings of play, the Cardinals won Brooklyn nothing.
- 36:09And as we're being serenaded by Miss Gladys Gooding in the background, let's listen to Ralph.
- 36:14Oh, fans, what would you say it takes to make a great ball player?
- 36:17Lots of natural talent?
- 36:18Oh, sure, that's the material the coaches work with.
- 36:21But what else?
- 36:23Ah, you guessed it, experience.
- 36:25Well, you know it takes a thing, combination, fine materials, plus experience,
- 36:30to make a great beer, Schaeffer beer.
- 36:33You bet, the Schaeffer people choose rich barley malt and tangy hops,
- 36:37another fine natural ingredient.
- 36:39Then they put real old-time brewing skill to work,
- 36:42skill that's been perfected in 115 years of experience.
- 36:46The result, oh man, for that answer, you just sip a cold golden amber glass of Schaeffer.
- 36:51It's beer at its best, beer that gives you the lively, satisfying flavor you want but don't always find.
- 36:57So remember, fans, when you want real enjoyment, you have a cool foaming glass of Schaeffer beer.
- 37:04It's real beer.
- 37:07Now, number 53, Don Drysdale.
- 37:14Now we go to the last half.
- 37:16At any number three, Don Drysdale will be the first man up for the Brooklyn Dodgers,
- 37:19and then we'll jump off to the top for batting order for Gilliam and pick up Reese.
- 37:23Right now, let's pick up Vinn.
- 37:25Well, while we have a chance before Drysdale comes up,
- 37:27we'd like to say hello and a big, fat welcome to a happy group of folks sitting in the upper deck,
- 37:32halfway between home plate and first place.
- 37:34Members of the Chamber of Commerce of Southampton, Long Island,
- 37:38then we certainly greet them and hope they have a fine day.
- 37:41The folks from Southampton are with us.
- 37:46Drysdale, Jim Gilliam, and Peewee Reese, bottom of the third, one nothing Cardinals.
- 37:51Drysdale is 0 for 22.
- 37:54Dixon delivers and the first pitch, cut out and fouled away on one.
- 37:59That was not the you-know-what.
- 38:01Looked more like a curveball.
- 38:09Dixon pouring at the dirt in front of the rubber.
- 38:11Cardinals have run on four hits, but there's no runs on three hits.
- 38:16We're in the bottom of the third.
- 38:17There's the knuckleball.
- 38:18We'll say it now, and that's inside, one and one.
- 38:28Dixon just staring into Hobie Landry.
- 38:32Now Murray's ready.
- 38:35The 1-1 pitch to Drysdale, cut on.
- 38:37There's a little fly ball in the shallow right center that could be trouble.
- 38:40Don Blasey game out, but it got behind him, and Drysdale safely on with his first hit of the year.
- 38:46Don Blasey game knew the ball was going to be trouble.
- 38:49He was charging out there, and the ball landed behind him.
- 38:53He was running with his back to home plate.
- 38:59So Don Drysdale, after 22 futal attempts, comes up with a base hit.
- 39:05Little looper in the right center.
- 39:07That's hit number four for Brooklyn, and it brings up Jim Gilliam,
- 39:11who's singled a right in the first inning and got around as far as third.
- 39:15Jim batting 247.
- 39:23Dixon checking signs now.
- 39:25Drysdale inching off the bag at first.
- 39:27Musial not holding.
- 39:28He's back of the runner.
- 39:30Dixon delivers.
- 39:31Gilliam tries to punt and piles it away on one.
- 39:34Jim not trying to drag a bunny.
- 39:36He's going to dump it up along third.
- 39:380-1 to count.
- 39:43Dodger fans begin a little hand clapping now in the background.
- 39:50Gilliam waiting.
- 39:510-1 to count.
- 39:53Dixon ready to strike one pitch.
- 39:55Cut on and dribbled away foul on a full cut. 0-2.
- 40:06The Phillies are still out down there in the seventh inning.
- 40:09They have scored a run against Milwaukee's Granny Henry at a home run.
- 40:12They would make it 2-2.
- 40:14No further reports.
- 40:16Cincinnati 3 Giants nothing at the end of 2-1 half innings.
- 40:20Strike two pitch is cut on and missed.
- 40:23Passed by Landriff.
- 40:25The first base is occupied so there's no need for a throw.
- 40:27Gilliam strikes out.
- 40:31One out and leaps the batter.
- 40:32Peewee popped up the short in the first inning.
- 40:340-1 batting 2-29.
- 40:43Dixon looks out.
- 40:44Alvin Dark has made a sign to him.
- 40:46And if you read the sign correctly, Dark put his glove to his chest.
- 40:49That means that Alvin will be covering the bag at second if there's a play.
- 40:55Dysdale emptying off first.
- 40:58Dixon ready.
- 41:00Murray delivers to Reese.
- 41:01Peewee swings and doesn't get it. 0-1.
- 41:04You know there's a lot of guesswork around second base when a batter like Reese is up there.
- 41:09I figure he might be playing hit and run.
- 41:10But a hit and run man doesn't necessarily have to hit behind the runner.
- 41:16In this case, Dark's figuring that maybe Peewee will so he'd cover the bag.
- 41:21I'm guessing all the time in this game.
- 41:23That's what makes it so tough.
- 41:28Dixon ready.
- 41:29Takes a look at Dysdale.
- 41:30The strike one pitch to Peewee.
- 41:32In the dirt.
- 41:33Jumps away from Landriff.
- 41:34And there goes Dysdale.
- 41:35He's around second.
- 41:36Makes a big turn.
- 41:37Hesitates halfway.
- 41:38Swift.
- 41:39And he's in trouble.
- 41:40They're going to hang him up.
- 41:41Landriff throws to second.
- 41:42Big Don goes diving back like a rag doll and he's in.
- 41:46You know who we just saw between second and third?
- 41:52Ichabod Crane.
- 41:53My goodness.
- 41:54That's just who he looked like.
- 41:56If you ever studied English in school.
- 41:58Ichabod Crane.
- 42:00Oh my.
- 42:02Don Dysdale, 6 feet 5 and about 3 foot 8 of him was going to third.
- 42:08And about 2 foot 7 was going the other way.
- 42:12He almost twisted himself right out of his uniform and big lanky Don finally dove back on his desk and made it.
- 42:19The wild pitch got him to second.
- 42:21Boy did he look funny.
- 42:23Excuse me but it was funny.
- 42:25Alright.
- 42:29One ball and one strike to Peewee.
- 42:31The dirtiest pitcher on the Dodger staff right now is Don Dysdale at second.
- 42:35The pitch to Reese is cut on and missed.
- 42:37One and two.
- 42:39The knuckle ball went in the dirt, jumped right between the feet of Landriff and went all the way back to the backstop.
- 42:45Dysdale started to stop at second, picked up, continued on and actually got halfway between second and third.
- 42:52He then made up his mind he had better get back to second and stumbled.
- 42:56So Landriff started to run the ball back to the infield staring at the pitcher making him commit himself.
- 43:01And then he fired just a little to the right of the bag and Dysdale did a swan dive and that's a cool way to describe a swan.
- 43:08But he made it back.
- 43:10The one and two pitch to Reese is cut on a bounce to the eddy casco at third.
- 43:14He'll hold Dysdale and throws in the dirt and Mugil can't dig it out.
- 43:19Reese is safely on at first and Dysdale remains at second.
- 43:31Oh, the official scorer figures that Mugil with his glove flat in the dirt should have still been able to come up with it and stands on the arrow.
- 43:41Oh, it's quite an inning.
- 43:42There's a meeting at the mound now.
- 43:43Dysdale at second.
- 43:44Reese at first.
- 43:45One out in the bottom of the third inning.
- 43:47Cardinal one, Dodgers nothing and the batter is Duke Snyder.
- 43:53Oh, gee, I wish I had seen Dysdale going back to second.
- 44:01Duke Snyder batting 260.
- 44:04He singled off the screen and right field in the first inning and was thrown outside the stretch.
- 44:11Oh, Dixon in the jam.
- 44:15Now he looks to his base runners.
- 44:19Now delivers to Snyder and it's way outside ball one.
- 44:36One and all the count of the Duke on deck, Elmer Vallow.
- 44:39No action yet on the Cardinal ten.
- 44:42One nothing Cardinal, bottom of the third, one out.
- 44:45Dysdale at second, Reese at first.
- 44:48The one on pitch to Snyder.
- 44:49Cut on his high drive to deep right field.
- 44:51That's a way out there.
- 44:52It's going to be off the screen.
- 44:54Dysdale had a hell of a up.
- 44:55Now he's around third.
- 44:56Come into the plate, he'll score.
- 44:58Dark gloves to the plate, not in time.
- 45:02And Vallow rejects and fused him on that one.
- 45:06Don Dysdale is flat.
- 45:09He is absolutely the dirtiest young pitcher in the league right now.
- 45:14He'll be dirty, but he's carried over the tying run.
- 45:18Newcomb, Alston, Cavadale, half the Dodgers come to greet him.
- 45:22What happened was the ball had hit the right.
- 45:25Del Ennis did a very fine job of making believe he had a play on it.
- 45:29Dysdale held it's track and Reese was running and he almost ran up Dysdale's back.
- 45:34The throw by Ennis came in towards third base and was cut off by Dark.
- 45:39And Dysdale got in under Dark's throw and Reese advanced to third.
- 45:47Well, Snyder's second hit.
- 45:50Run batted in.
- 45:51It's all tied one and one.
- 45:52Elmer Vallow the batter and this has been a wild inning.
- 46:00Vallow winning 333.
- 46:01Takes a pitch low and outside, ball one.
- 46:05But Dysdale comes over on the base hit.
- 46:07Reese goes around to third.
- 46:12The Dodgers one run on five hits and the Cardinals one run on four hits, one error.
- 46:23Reese coming down on third.
- 46:24Snyder at first held on by Stan Musial.
- 46:27The one on pitch to Vallow, cut on tap to the hole on the left side and bare handed by Dark
- 46:32and they get the fourth to second.
- 46:34A great play by Dark and the throw now will get Snyder at second base.
- 46:41There'll be an argument at second with second base umpire Bill Baker, Billy Herman and Walter Austin
- 46:47arguing that the throw had pulled on Dysdale off the bag.
- 46:52Reese is on the whip around to make it two one-bookers but things aren't bubbling here
- 46:57at Eversfield.
- 46:58Austin and Herman are fuming mad.
- 47:07The argument continues with Bill Baker.
- 47:09Herman is really the heated man.
- 47:11Austin kind of standing aside.
- 47:13Now Walter does a little chewing himself.
- 47:15Alvin Dark made a magnificent play going into the hole.
- 47:19He could not backhand the ball with his glove.
- 47:21He actually bare handed it.
- 47:23Throw at it in the air and fire devising game.
- 47:26We just did Fodan's the bag for the fourth.
- 47:31So Vallow hits into a fourth play, six to four on a great play by Alvin Dark.
- 47:37The run comes over.
- 47:38It's two one Brooklyn.
- 47:40Two out on the third.
- 47:41We'll pause for station identification.
- 47:43This is the Brooklyn Dodgers radio network.
- 47:45Tomorrow afternoon from one to four, Dean Hutter plays the top hit recordings
- 47:50on the Wacker Bandwagon.
- 47:52Tile 1460, WOKO Albany.
- 47:55WOKO, the capital district's most talked about station with downtown studios
- 47:59in the Hotel Wellington.
- 48:01All right, Gino Simoli to batter.
- 48:03Not too many runs over here on the third but boy they've been dancing in the air.
- 48:07It's two one Brooklyn now and Gino Simoli to batter.
- 48:10Vallow one first with two out.
- 48:12Dixon delivers.
- 48:13Simoli takes low.
- 48:14Ball one.
- 48:16What a great play by Dark.
- 48:20Vallow lobbed at the base hit and instead it's turned into a fourth play at second.
- 48:25Reese carrying it over.
- 48:27Brooklyn two runs five hits.
- 48:28Cardinal's one run four hits one error.
- 48:36Simoli waiting.
- 48:37Dixon delivers one oh and the pitch is down low.
- 48:39Ball two, two and oh.
- 48:40Herman Wehmeyer continues to loosen up down in the Cardinal bullpen.
- 48:57Dixon ready.
- 48:58The two oh pitches cut on lift off his right leg.
- 49:00It's staggered and he chases it.
- 49:02Pitch it up and throws not in time.
- 49:07Murray Dixon at a hook one right off his right leg.
- 49:10It really staggered him on demand but he chased it anyway.
- 49:13Out on the grass court short.
- 49:15His draw a little too late.
- 49:17And Simoli literally gets a base hit off Dixon off his right leg.
- 49:24Oh this is tough.
- 49:26One is at first and second two out.
- 49:29Brooklyn two Cardinal one in the third inning.
- 49:32And Roy Cavanaugh with the batter.
- 49:35Can't be blue to single the center in the second inning.
- 49:38He's batting 276.
- 49:47Eversfield rocking today and it's just the beginning.
- 49:50We've got quite an afternoon in store for us.
- 49:53Hope you have plenty of shapers.
- 49:57Dixon ready now.
- 49:58Cavanaugh waiting.
- 49:59The pitch to Roy is low at his feet four one.
- 50:03Cavanaugh the seventh man to come to bat here in the third inning.
- 50:07The Dodgers have scored twice.
- 50:09They lead two to one.
- 50:11Elmavalo at second base.
- 50:12Geno Simoli at first.
- 50:14Two out.
- 50:23Dixon ready.
- 50:24Takes a peek at his runners.
- 50:25Now the one-oh pitch.
- 50:27Cavanaugh takes on the outside corner for strikes.
- 50:30One ball one strike.
- 50:31And now Cavanaugh is mad at playing on by Mike Cicari.
- 50:46Red hot ball game.
- 50:47Shaper weather in New York.
- 50:50Got it all here at Eversfield today.
- 50:54Dixon ready.
- 50:56The one-one pitch to Cavanaugh is outside a diving lunging block by Hobie Landriff.
- 51:00Oh, that pitch would have been back to the backstop.
- 51:03Two and one.
- 51:10And back Johnny Roseborough.
- 51:30Two-one pitch to Cavanaugh.
- 51:32Come on, there's a high drive.
- 51:33The deep left gonna feel a blare going near the wall.
- 51:47That ball is gone.
- 52:01Roy Cavanaugh whacks his ninth home run, a low line drive, just taking off in the vicinity of left center.
- 52:09Kenny Boyer ran far out of the wall and finally just disconsolately had to drop his hand to his side.
- 52:14And the ball actually went right down an exit way in the left center field seat.
- 52:20Bertie Hutchinson out to the mound and that will be all for Murray Dixon.
- 52:24Herman Weimar is coming in and the Dodgers have come up with five runs in the third inning.
- 52:29And now lead the Cardinals 5-1.
- 52:34Boyer won an inning.
- 52:38Well, Herman Weimar taking over for Murray Dixon.
- 52:41And Dixon, who had had three complete game victories in a row, has to come out.
- 52:46And enough things happened to him out there in the field.
- 52:48He could write a book on the inning alone.
- 52:51Well, Dixon gives way and Herman Weimar takes over.
- 52:57Murray Dixon worked two and two-third innings.
- 53:04Gave up seven hits, five runs.
- 53:09He had a wild pitch, did not walk anybody, struck out one.
- 53:15Well, Herman Weimar taking over.
- 53:21Herman, you remember, perhaps one of the finer performances of his career.
- 53:24He turned it in against Brooklyn in an extra inning ball game.
- 53:27He pitched 12 of a 16-inning game.
- 53:30Weimar is making his sixth appearance in relief.
- 53:34He has guarded seven ball games.
- 53:36He has two wins and four defeats.
- 53:48We checked with the official scorer and found out that the Dodgers,
- 53:51having scored five times here in the third inning, to lead five to one.
- 53:54Only one of the runs burned.
- 53:58Herman Ready and delivers and Rosebough takes a strike on one.
- 54:01So, by the way, any time Kamen Alley hits a home run,
- 54:04he establishes a new record in the National League for most home runs hit by a catcher.
- 54:08He had tied Gabby Harknett at 2.36 and he hit one the other day to break the tie and stand alone.
- 54:13And now he takes another giant step.
- 54:15He is now at 238 in his career.
- 54:18He is a new mark for a National League catcher.
- 54:21Weimar works to Rosebough outside and low.
- 54:24One ball, one strike.
- 54:26At the end of eight innings, Milwaukee three and the Phillies two.
- 54:30The end of four innings since 93, Giants nothing.
- 54:33At the end of this inning, we'll give you a complete rundown of the scorers.
- 54:36One-one to Rosebough, caught on is a high drive to left field.
- 54:39Back goes Moon to the wall, reaches up and grabs it.
- 54:43Oh, Johnny Rosebough came within a couple of feet of hitting his first Major League home run
- 54:47instead at the long out.
- 54:50Now to add it up, five runs on four hits.
- 54:58There was one error.
- 54:59That's by Musial.
- 55:00There was a wild fit.
- 55:01There was a wildest rundown between second and third we've seen in a while.
- 55:06And a chance for Don Griesdell also to get a rest.
- 55:09I wonder if he went in and changed uniforms.
- 55:11We'll wait and see.
- 55:12Five runs on four hits.
- 55:14Nobody left on base.
- 55:15And the big bro, the home run by Campanella.
- 55:17At the end of three, Brooklyn five runs, seven hits, and no errors.
- 55:20The Cardinals one run, four hits, and one error.
- 55:25Don Griesdell in a new uniform.
- 55:27He's washed off half a grime that he picked up at second base and also at home plate.
- 55:32There's also a psychological angle too, you know, about putting on a clean uniform.
- 55:36You feel a little bit better, maybe fresher.
- 55:38The Dodgers hope it will work.
- 55:40Griesdell was quite a moving man out there in the third.
- 55:44In the three innings of play, Brooklyn five runs, seven hits, and no errors.
- 55:48Cardinals one run, four hits, and one error.
- 55:51Another moving man, Mr. Hobie Landryd, will be coming up.
- 55:54He'll start it off in the fourth.
- 55:56And for the F&M Shape of Brewing Company of Brooklyn, Brewers of America's oldest lager beer.
- 56:01And for the play-by-play, here's Al Hopper.
- 56:04Thank you very much.
- 56:05Ben, hi, everybody.
- 56:06Well, Ben really got himself a workout in that last half of third.
- 56:09It was really something.
- 56:11Big runs and four hits for the Dodgers to pick up the lead five to one.
- 56:15Hobie Landryd is 0 for one.
- 56:17The first pitch to him is high and outside for ball one.
- 56:20Landryd, a little left-hand hitter, followed out to Roy Campanella to start things in the second inning for St. Louis.
- 56:30Landryd batting 178 as Griesdell comes in with fastball and it's placed down across the carpet for short.
- 56:35Jim Gilliam digs it out, snaps his throw to Roseville, and that's all for Landryd.
- 56:39One up, one down here in the top half of inning number four.
- 56:43Eddie Casco drew a rock when he came up in the second inning, so he's coming up for his first official at bat, hitting a 293.
- 56:52Brooklyn leads it five to one.
- 56:53They have five runs on seven hits, no errors.
- 56:55And St. Louis one run four hits, one error.
- 56:59Right on fastball, it's fired in there for the strike.
- 57:03Casco, a right-hand hitter, stands about three-quarters deep in batters, boys.
- 57:10Griesdell, tall, skinny right-hander, delivers a sidearm fastball and it's up the mound with a stand-out of play.
- 57:18No balls and two strikes.
- 57:22Following Eddie Casco will have pitcher Herman Wehmeyer coming up.
- 57:26He relieves Murray Dixon after two and two-third innings down to the board.
- 57:30Murray charges all five runs.
- 57:35Curveball, swung on and lifted off the right field.
- 57:38Off to his right goes Gino Somoli, and they've just got it.
- 57:44Two down, top half of the fourth inning.
- 57:59Coming up to the plate now will be Herman Wehmeyer.
- 58:03He's had two runs batted in for the Cardinals this year, hitting a 235, four to 17.
- 58:08Hits them pretty well.
- 58:13Griesdell takes his time for Campanella.
- 58:17Down comes the first pitcher.
- 58:18Wehmeyer watches the fastball streak across the face for ball one.
- 58:22Two down, the base is empty, top of the fourth.
- 58:24Brooklyn Five and St. Louis has one.
- 58:30Griesdell pumps one, kicks and throws.
- 58:32Upside on fastball, Wehmeyer fouls it off to the left of the plate.
- 58:37One ball, one strike count on St. Louis' winning pitcher.
- 58:45Just the beginning of a long afternoon between the St. Louis Cardinals and the Brooklyn Dodgers.
- 58:50Got another one to go after this one.
- 58:54Probably Willard Schmidt going against Opax or Padres in the second game,
- 58:58and it all depends on how this first one comes out.
- 59:01The one-one delivery.
- 59:02Nobaham fastball center, a miss, four, strike two, the ball was fired in just off a letter.
- 59:21Six, no strike please.
- 59:23Throw that ball for Wehmeyer, called out on strike.
- 59:26Young Griesdell hangs up his third strike out of the afternoon.
- 59:30And the score at the end of three and a half innings remains St. Louis one,
- 59:33and the Brooklyn Dodgers have five.
- 59:36You know what our plans are for tonight?
- 59:41We fly to Cincinnati.
- 59:45Oh well, with or without airplane.
- 59:48Back down.
- 59:53Joleneal coming up now in the last half before it, then he's 0 for one.
- 59:56He closed out the second and he's rolling out to the right side to Don Blossomgate.
- 1:00:00Herman Wehmeyer ready to go again.
- 1:00:04Big blonde Cincinnati Dutchman, twist, kicks and throws.
- 1:00:07Big curve ball, it's hit right back to the mound.
- 1:00:09Wehmeyer's got it, flips over to first base and Charlie Neal is up.
- 1:00:14One away in the last half of the fourth inning, the better now will be Don Griesdell.
- 1:00:18Well Don started things off in the third inning with a loopy single into right center.
- 1:00:23Hats himself a heyday and a quick think on the base pass.
- 1:00:29Deserves a round of applause he gets as he comes up to the plate right now.
- 1:00:33Griesdell one hits him 23 at bat, so that gives him the lofty percentage of 0-4-3.
- 1:00:43Don waggles that bat around.
- 1:00:46Herman Wehmeyer now, Griesdell cuts at it and doesn't get it.
- 1:00:53Strike one.
- 1:00:58I go along with Benning what he said about Griesdell.
- 1:01:00You should have seen him hanging up between second and third.
- 1:01:03He was going in all directions, all ways, at all times at the same time.
- 1:01:09Curve ball is under his knees and Griesdell's counting out the ball on a strike.
- 1:01:15Ever see one of those cartoons where the subject is running one way and decides to go another and he bends in the middle?
- 1:01:24Sort of skips along and then starts back.
- 1:01:26That's what Griesdell looks like.
- 1:01:28The one-one delivery.
- 1:01:29Fast ball, one on, it's a long drive.
- 1:01:31Griesdell gets on a home run.
- 1:01:32It is well-builted into the sixth home run for Griesdell.
- 1:01:41Well, Fluckers, Flucker Griesdell, that is, won't have to hang up between second and third.
- 1:01:48He comes on in.
- 1:01:50Don Griesdell, he really built one into left color.
- 1:01:54Big Don Newcomb shakes his hand as he comes in and the ball comes off it.
- 1:01:59That's the second major league home run for Don Griesdell, his first this year.
- 1:02:04He really is smart.
- 1:02:05He's got his flops this afternoon, hasn't he?
- 1:02:08Oh, great goodness.
- 1:02:11This is the kids' day.
- 1:02:20That's the number one run, number one out, Waymo.
- 1:02:22And up there now is Gilliam, punching the first pitch back for strike one.
- 1:02:26Foul ball to the net.
- 1:02:30We kept telling the old spring wrong that this Griesdell can hit a ball when he gets a hold of it.
- 1:02:34The kid just proved it, except the fans wasn't.
- 1:02:39Six to one now in favor of Brooklyn.
- 1:02:41High curve ball to Gilliam is outside, ball one.
- 1:02:44One ball and one strike.
- 1:02:47I tell you, Mr. Scully, when we get on that airplane tonight and fly down to Cincinnati,
- 1:02:52there'll be no holding that Griesdell and he'd be.
- 1:02:57Women are delivered.
- 1:03:04Gilliam is in there.
- 1:03:15That'll be a hit in an hour.
- 1:03:18Jim Gilliam has successful on his front up the third base line to get a single.
- 1:03:22And then when Casco's barehand pick up, though the first was wild,
- 1:03:25he moves on down to second base on the air by Eddie Casco.
- 1:03:31That's the second air for the St. Louis Cardinals.
- 1:03:35And Peewee Reese comes up to the plate now.
- 1:03:37Weimar has surrendered his second base hit.
- 1:03:41Gilliam in pretty good scoring position in the 6-1 ball game in favor of the Dodgers.
- 1:03:45Down comes the pitcher, Reese Alford hits a hard fly ball on a short left field.
- 1:03:49Wally Moon comes charging in for it, has a good shot at it and takes it.
- 1:03:52Gilliam holds right there at second.
- 1:04:00Duke's got it, gets a round of applause.
- 1:04:02It's only 20 days.
- 1:04:05Duke's been going up there to the strains of mixed emotions.
- 1:04:10But the Duke has two for two this afternoon.
- 1:04:12He's driven in one round.
- 1:04:13He hit two singles high off the screen.
- 1:04:16Right field, the first inning he was off trying to stretch it into a double on a fine throw
- 1:04:20might be a liquefiance to Alvin Gotts covering his second base.
- 1:04:23They're going to put him on and they're going to monkey around with him.
- 1:04:28Now Schneider will be walking tension-laced.
- 1:04:34That'll be the first base on balls.
- 1:04:37Picked up by Pupton this afternoon off the combined pitching on a starting pitcher, Dixon.
- 1:04:43And now really we're coming Weimar.
- 1:04:46First ball for Schneider is off to first base.
- 1:04:49He's going on Elmavello.
- 1:04:52Elmavello, we got the side in the first inning with a pop-up third base.
- 1:05:00Then in the third hit a rifle shot down to shortstop.
- 1:05:04Down to second base and he's forced Schneider at second from crossing game to shortstop dart.
- 1:05:12Elmavello, a left-hand hitter batting in the cleanup spot at 321.
- 1:05:17I'm a very determined square-shouldered guy, unlikable fellow.
- 1:05:23After Kerpo, it's about into right center field coming on for it is Ken Boyer and Boyer makes the catch.
- 1:05:32So in the fourth inning, did not just pick up a run on Drysdale's home run.
- 1:05:39There were two base hits in the inning.
- 1:05:42There was an hour and there were two men left on.
- 1:05:45So the score at the end of four full innings of play.
- 1:05:48It is Brooklyn 6 and the St. Louis Cardinals have 1.
- 1:05:57The first half of this game was brought to you by the F&M Schaeffer Brewing Company of Brooklyn.
- 1:06:01Brewers of Schaeffer Beer, America's oldest lager beer.
- 1:06:06Now your host for the next five innings will be Lucky Strike, the best tasting cigarette you ever smoked.
- 1:06:12Made by the American Tobacco Company. Tobacco is our middle name.
- 1:06:19Well, still a week's time to enroll your boy in the Dodger Town summer camp at Vero Beach Fort, everybody.
- 1:06:24If your boy is between 10 and 16, if he likes sports, if you want to place him under expert coaches
- 1:06:29and a well-disciplined, well-planned program of sports competition, you couldn't believe me,
- 1:06:34you couldn't find a better camp than Dodger Town.
- 1:06:37But time's a-wasting, so you'd better telephone first thing tomorrow. Call Maine 45091.
- 1:06:43That's Maine 45091.
- 1:06:49Now we move into the top half, opening number five.
- 1:06:53The first man coming up will be Don Blossomgame for the St. Louis Cardinals.
- 1:06:58I'll just light you up a lucky now and we'll see what happens as Blossomgame Dark and Musial
- 1:07:03will be facing Don Drysdale. Four innings total, six runs, nine hits nowhere as Brooklyn.
- 1:07:09One run, four hits, two errors, St. Louis.
- 1:07:12Drysdale's run of fastball is over for strike one.
- 1:07:18At the beginning of play today, the St. Louis Cardinals won fourth place, two and a half games off the page.
- 1:07:24Shot on fastball, good foul off the third base side. Check up on the standings once more.
- 1:07:33To make sure, caught off in St. Louis, we're tied two and a half games behind for fourth and fifth place.
- 1:07:40Brooklyn had third place exclusively since now they was in second and Milwaukee in first.
- 1:07:49Drysdale delivers a bit of swing on and laced out into right field.
- 1:07:52That's going to be in for base hit. It's up the alley going to the wall. Blossomgame is on his way to second.
- 1:07:56Simone is picked up out there and throws in. Here comes Blossomgame moving all over the third.
- 1:08:01It'll be a sliding triple for him. Blossomgame tripled up the alley in right center.
- 1:08:10Tip number five given up by Drysdale. One run, five hits, four to go it now.
- 1:08:17Blossomgame at third and Alvin Clark. The old quill coming up to the plate.
- 1:08:23Clark's out there thinking for you all the time.
- 1:08:27Caught out on strikes in the first inning, grounded to short the third.
- 1:08:34Drysdale ready to work to him.
- 1:08:35Diles hits one on.
- 1:08:36Line down in the right center field. That's in the alley too.
- 1:08:39Maddic is over to cut it off and knocks the ball down.
- 1:08:42The ball is scored easily as Dark Coast is feeling in the second of the double.
- 1:08:47A triple followed by a double both to right center has produced another run.
- 1:08:50And before we have New Deal up there, let's pause for station identification.
- 1:08:53This is the Brooklyn Dodger Radio Network.
- 1:08:56Dial 1460WOKO. Alvin AWOKO, the capital district's most talked about station with downtown studios in the Hotel Wellington.
- 1:09:11Time New Deal coming up to the plate.
- 1:09:15Nobody on one on. One on scored. Six through the score.
- 1:09:17And David Blossom shot on fastball to stand his high off the face.
- 1:09:22Ball one.
- 1:09:23Manager Austin gets up and looks down at the bullpen.
- 1:09:26He notes he wants some action.
- 1:09:30Eddie Winkluck gets up and he'll start to throw down in the Brooklyn bullpen.
- 1:09:41Good swung on by New Deal.
- 1:09:42Thoughtback foul. Got his one on one on him.
- 1:09:55Alvin Dark moving away from second.
- 1:10:01Rised down to the top of the stretch. Check stand New Deal.
- 1:10:04One one's him.
- 1:10:05The curve ball is pined and tossed out in a very short left center field.
- 1:10:08Coming on is John Mazzolo.
- 1:10:10And he can't get it. It drops in front of him.
- 1:10:13Did a pretty good con job on making Alvin Dark believe he was going to catch that ball.
- 1:10:17Dark had to hold up so he moved only down to third base.
- 1:10:22New Deal a little popper out in the left center for the base hit.
- 1:10:26Alvin Dark moving over to third.
- 1:10:32That'll be hit number seven off Young Drysdale.
- 1:10:36Nobody out. One is the first and third and the batter coming up will be Dallanet.
- 1:10:39Walter Austin's called for time and the manager comes walking out of the Dodger dugout.
- 1:10:43He'll block and talk to Young Drysdale.
- 1:10:46Eddie Robuck is down in the bullpen, cranking it up.
- 1:10:52Hard spot.
- 1:10:56Because here Drysdale is leading by four runs.
- 1:11:01Nobody out and one is the first and third and he hasn't pitched these five innings to leave a ballgame with a commanding lead.
- 1:11:09So what do you think Walter Austin's going to do?
- 1:11:13Leave the kid in there and take a chance or will he bring in Eddie Robuck?
- 1:11:17And hopes that they can stop it right here and now.
- 1:11:20That's one of the problems the manager has.
- 1:11:24He's got to make the first guess and he's got to make his first guess right.
- 1:11:28He doesn't have a chance to look back over everything in retrospect or chance to change his decision once he makes it.
- 1:11:37The manager cannot be the second guesser. He's got to be the first guesser.
- 1:11:50And Walter Austin is going to take Drysdale out of the ballgame right now.
- 1:11:53Eddie Robuck is coming off.
- 1:11:55For Drysdale pitches four innings plus three men.
- 1:12:10There's the announcement for Robuck.
- 1:12:13He'll come on to pitch here to Del Ennis in the fifth inning.
- 1:12:19Nobody out, one on the score.
- 1:12:21Doug is on it third. Musial is on it first. Del Ennis who has single twice, both to left field, both times left field, will be up to face Eddie Robuck.
- 1:12:30While we check up on Robuck's record.
- 1:12:33Drysdale takes the long walk and gets the fine round of applause.

- 1:15:44We can't close out Young Drysdale's record as yet because the two men on the bases are his responsibility.
- 1:15:53It happens with him before we can put it down, but we do know this, he cannot be the losing pitcher.
- 1:16:02Musial at first, Dark is on at third. Second is open, no outs.
- 1:16:07Robuck fires in there and then the swing and he doesn't get it.

- 1:16:28He moved Stan Musial in from second base.
- 1:16:31The single was caught in the run in the first inning.

- 1:17:51Throw down to Roy Campanella.
- 1:17:54Throw on the fearless choice, Boyer moves up to second and Stan Musial moves over to second base.
- 1:18:00Boyer on first, Stan Musial on second on the fearless choice.

- 1:18:50Winning pitcher was Kozler, Louis Arroyo lost it.
- 1:18:53Thank you, Alan.
- 1:18:55Here's Wally Moon hitting left-handed.
- 1:18:57Down comes Robert Han Kerpo, hit right back to the mound off of the knee of Robert Gilliam.
- 1:19:02Certainly playing it picked up close to first base in time.
- 1:19:06Well, that play will have to go one to four to three.
- 1:19:10Repetize the side and leaves two men on.
- 1:19:13One run in the inning for the St. Louis Cardinals on three bases.
- 1:19:20Another score at the end of four and a half minutes of play now.
- 1:19:22It is the Brooklyn Dodgers six and the St. Louis Cardinals have two.
- 1:19:29Now let's have a word from Jerry Douglas.
- 1:19:31It's time to talk to you folks again about Lucky Strike.
- 1:19:34My purpose, of course, is to suggest you buy Lucky's.
- 1:19:39In support of this proposal, I might array any number of facts.
- 1:19:43For example, I might point out that Lucky's are all cigarettes, all fine tobacco, looks naturally good tasting, that's toasted to taste even better.
- 1:19:54All these facts are true, of course.
- 1:19:56But how are you going to find out until you give yourself a try?
- 1:20:00You're lucky, so buy Lucky's, okay?
- 1:20:05For the taste that you like, light up a Lucky Strike.
- 1:20:13You say a Lucky's the best tasting cigarette you ever smoke.
- 1:20:24Last half of the fifth inning, Gino Samole coming on to bat, so let's get right back to Al.
- 1:20:28Gino Samole has rounded out the shortstop and he actually got a base hit off Murray Dixon's legs in the third inning.
- 1:20:36Samole hitting number five in the order, batting at 3-41.
- 1:20:41We have our bumps and fridges and Samole takes a curve on the corner.
- 1:20:46Yeah, that's a strike one.
- 1:20:52Samole to be followed by Roy Campanella and then by Johnny Roseboro.
- 1:20:58Six to two, Brooklyn.
- 1:21:00Weimar delivers the Samole, a soft curve and Gino Lange fouls just outside curve.
- 1:21:06That'll be strike two on Samole.
- 1:21:16Roy Campanella on deck to go next.
- 1:21:20Second batter's box now.
- 1:21:26Weimar backs Samole, swings and misses strike three.
- 1:21:34Weimar, that's his first strikeout.
- 1:21:41Coming up now is Campanella.
- 1:21:44Roy had a three-run homerun in the third inning.
- 1:21:50That's been three of the five runs the Dodgers picked up in that third.
- 1:21:55But he's 238th homerun of his major league career.
- 1:21:59By establishing himself another record, he's the man of record now in the homeruns for catchers.
- 1:22:07Pitch to him low, ball one.
- 1:22:13That is, he is the catcher of record in the National League.
- 1:22:18Most homeruns hit by catcher, career.
- 1:22:22One-on delivery to him, way outside, and that's ball two.
- 1:22:31Many times it's been said and observed,
- 1:22:36has its two fine catchers as Roy Campanella and Yogi Pera.
- 1:22:42They're in the same league at the same time.
- 1:22:46Saddam curved, he can't be in there for a strike.
- 1:22:49Count us two and one.
- 1:22:57Kobe Landry for started off the ball game catching Murray Dixon.
- 1:23:01Had to jump all over the place.
- 1:23:03Had a little easier time of it with him and Weimar.
- 1:23:08Two-one delivery.
- 1:23:10And curve is tapped out in front of a plate and then kicks out.
- 1:23:18A lot of English on it.
- 1:23:20Two balls, two strikes to count on Roy Campanella.
- 1:23:26I hope as you're driving along in your car this afternoon and enjoying your lucky strike
- 1:23:31that you'll take it easy and pay attention to all the rules of the road.
- 1:23:36Come home safely.

- 1:24:18Campy Watts, that'll be the second base on balls offered by Weimar.
- 1:24:23The batter coming up will be John Roseborough.
- 1:24:27Struck out in the second ring and just narrowly missed hitting a home run in the third.
- 1:24:31Set a ball deep to Moon in left field.
- 1:24:35Well, they had to back up against the boards to make the catch.
- 1:24:40Oh, Roseborough, moving on, has just one base hit and ten times up.
- 1:24:46That was a front single.
- 1:24:48We know he can clip the ball.
- 1:24:49He's proved it.
- 1:24:51Slender left-hand hitter.
- 1:24:52Weimar tries one on him at the knees.
- 1:24:54Johnny doesn't go for it.
- 1:24:56That's ball one.
- 1:25:12Swings on the next pitch and it's a high pop-up.

- 1:25:31Charlie's been up twice.
- 1:25:33He rolled out to the right side to the second baseman's blessing game to retire Brooklyn in the second.
- 1:25:39And as the leadoff man in the fourth inning hit back to the mound.
- 1:25:42What's going on?
- 1:25:50Weimar checks his runner, Campanella, delivers the plate and Charlie Neal hits a high pop-up out into short center field.
- 1:25:56Kenny Boyer flips the grass and comes charging on for it.
- 1:25:58Now he's got it.

- 1:41:11A home run by Muzo got it all caught up after Campanella's home run had put the Dodgers out in front by five to one.
- 1:41:18So here we go, last of the six-winning and right back to Al.
- 1:41:22Did I hear correct, you correctly hear that Lindy McDaniel's little brother, make it younger brother.
- 1:41:29I was just going to say this one out there now is about six feet three. He's a pretty good-sized kid.
- 1:41:33He was signed by the Cardinals as a three-aged interbonus player.
- 1:41:36On the 23rd of May this year he bats and throws right-handed.
- 1:41:39He was born in 1939 of Hollis, Oklahoma.
- 1:41:44Six feet two and a half, weighs about 180 pounds, so he gives you the impression he's pretty much of a string bean right-hander.
- 1:41:49Sandy Ambrose will bat against him.
- 1:41:52Takes the curve from the kid, good for the strike.
- 1:41:56He appeared as Vaughn McDaniel, a bird against the Philadelphia. He has no record.
- 1:42:05He pitched four innings, came in a relief.
- 1:42:09Gangly right-hander pitches to Ambrose.
- 1:42:12Batting for Robuck doesn't get it.
- 1:42:17So for Sandy now the count is no balls, two strikes.
- 1:42:24Six and six, that's the score. So young McDaniel has to assume this ball game.
- 1:42:31Both Dixon, Weimar, down to the boards this afternoon.
- 1:42:37Dixon off the hook and Weimar cannot win or lose it.
- 1:42:43Gang of lovers, his curve is low.
- 1:42:46One ball and two strikes.
- 1:42:50Scott posted incredible records at R.F. High School.
- 1:42:55Three years he won 44 and lost eight.
- 1:42:59He's won in a few ball games.
- 1:43:03Glevers and Oberhand curve on Ambrose, beat this one up for first base line foul.
- 1:43:07One ball, two strikes on Sandy.
- 1:43:13What a combination this boy is, McDaniel.
- 1:43:15Probably the reason he gets the word Vaughn, he's German-Scotian-Irish descent.
- 1:43:24That's mixing up pretty good.
- 1:43:26Now the one-two delivery. Down it comes, Ambrose swings and doesn't get a big curve ball.
- 1:43:31Strike three. Ambrose batting for Robuck, strikes out.
- 1:43:47Now Jim Gilliam, we've got a crack, batting against this young fellow.
- 1:44:04Eighteen-year-older delivers, the curve ball is inside and low.
- 1:44:09One ball and no strikes.
- 1:44:11Jim Gilliam, single twice, he struck out once. He's two for three, batting at 249.
- 1:44:23One-all delivery, fast ball, hit back foul.
- 1:44:28All tied, six and six. Each side having nine base hits.
- 1:44:37Robuck is out of the ball game after actually having pitched two innings.
- 1:44:44John LeBons, the sole worker down in the Brooklyn goal fans, looks as though Clem will be coming on.
- 1:44:52One-one delivery, the curve, nicely in at the knees.
- 1:44:56One ball and two strikes.
- 1:45:00Vaughn McDaniel, Lyndon McDaniel's younger brother.
- 1:45:05He's been pitching on the Cardinal staff.
- 1:45:09This one is for bonus, baby.
- 1:45:13Out there in the mound, great big heave and a side.
- 1:45:17Now he lays the course of the stretch, delivers one and two, and the curve is just outside.
- 1:45:21Ball two, two balls, two strikes.
- 1:45:30As I guess I should have said, as far as these McDaniel boys are concerned,
- 1:45:35this is the youngest of the bonus babies because they both were shying for about 50 grand apiece, reportedly.
- 1:45:42Fast ball, swung on, by Gilliam, hit the center field, Ken Boyer, and he strikes out there,
- 1:45:46holds it down at the second out, my staff is extending, the bases remain empty.
- 1:45:52The better coming on now will be Reese.
- 1:45:56Reese the veteran facing the kid.
- 1:46:01Vaughn has just taken his cap off, the Moppy's brow, and you should see the shock of hair he's got.
- 1:46:08Stands straight up like a fright wig and cut off close.
- 1:46:14Is it the Ivy League style they call that? We used to call it the crew cut, which is which.
- 1:46:22Here's Reese. Pitched to arm as well for ball one.
- 1:46:27I can remember that on this field, Reese playing his very first ball game coming up as a Dodger.
- 1:46:35Hasn't changed a great deal.
- 1:46:43One-oh pitch, curve on the inside corner to fifths for a strike. One ball, one strike.
- 1:46:50He's gone 0-3 this afternoon, he's about to show up.
- 1:46:54With the base run on the third on mutuals fielding error, on a low throw, and in the fourth fly to left.
- 1:47:03Daniel tries fast ball, gets it in at the knee, strike two.
- 1:47:08Ball into the strike.
- 1:47:25Look, Daniel, rather goccy and gangly.
- 1:47:30That's another pitch loose, and Reese takes that in there at the knee, it's a fast strike three, and that was a fast-breaking curve ball.
- 1:47:37Captain's called out on strikes, nothing across in sixth inning.
- 1:47:42John McDaniel hangs up two strikeouts in pitching one inning.
- 1:47:45Score at the end of sixth inning to play. St. Louis six runs, nine hits, two errors.
- 1:47:49Brookman six runs, nine hits, and no errors.
- 1:47:51That's a bunch of errors all over the place this afternoon, so let's get to the lucky strike scoreboard.
- 1:47:56Jerry, high it out on the ball game with the Polar Grounds at the end of seven and a half.
- 1:48:01Cincinnati three, the Giants one.
- 1:48:03The first game from Philadelphia, three to two, Ferdow the winner over Melo the loser.
- 1:48:07Second game, it'll be Burnett and Simmons, and no score at the end of one.
- 1:48:11Chicago beat Pittsburgh four to one, Kaiser the winner over Arloia.
- 1:48:15And the second game, it'll be Rush and Perky.
- 1:48:18The Cubs now are beating the Pirates three straight after the Pirates have knocked off the red legs four in a row, so how do you figure it?
- 1:48:25The Yankees and Kansas City game at the end of three innings, no score.
- 1:48:29Johnny Cooks against Morgan, Washington, Chicago, it's four to two, Chicago at the end of six and a half.
- 1:48:35Baltimore, Cleveland, first game, four to three.
- 1:48:38Cleveland leads at the end of eight innings of play, and Detroit leads Boston one-nothing at the end of six innings of play.
- 1:48:44And that's everything right off the lucky strike scoreboard.
- 1:48:47Well, you know, sitting here and watching that young Wendy McDaniel, I wonder how the kid feels.
- 1:48:52A month ago he was a high school student out in a little town in Oklahoma.
- 1:48:56Here he is in the biggest city in the country, facing golfers like Amarose, Gilliam, and Reese, and just whipped cool with a cucumber.
- 1:49:03How about that?
- 1:49:04Yeah, reminds of young Bob Taylor who came in and cut the other night for the Braves.
- 1:49:08I wonder how he felt. I guess you could say that they felt about the same because it wasn't so long ago he was catching for his high school too out in Metropolis.
- 1:49:15That's what makes baseball a great game, Al, when kids can come out of high school like that and with all that ability come out up here and play it.
- 1:49:21Yeah, how old do you feel today, Dad?
- 1:49:23Four-foot-sixteen. Hello.
- 1:49:27Yes sir.
- 1:49:28I don't know. There's something about this great game of baseball that keeps you thinking young, feeling young.
- 1:49:34Young boy who's up there now to face Clem LeBarn who hooks him and is in there for a strike.
- 1:49:38Clem LeBarn coming on.
- 1:49:47Clem LeBarn has won three and has lost one. He saved eight ball games for Brooklyn.
- 1:49:51This has come on as a long drive deep to left field as the well hit ball and it is gone into the left field stand for a home run for Boyer.
- 1:50:10Boyer hitting his seventh home run.
- 1:50:13Two home runs have been poked here.
- 1:50:15They send those Cardinals this afternoon. The match is for two, hit by Brooklyn, one by Campanella, one by Drysdale.
- 1:50:22Oh, the Cardinals move out in front, seven to six.
- 1:50:30Another thousand lucky for our honored hospitals on this broadcast.
- 1:50:37By the moon up there taking a strike. Our honored hospitals for this broadcast this afternoon.
- 1:50:46The United States Army hospitals at Fort Monmouth down at West Point.
- 1:50:51The result so far of today's play at 4,000.
- 1:50:57Lucky's on earmarked and ready for him. Moon swings on the next pitch, misses up strike two.
- 1:51:12LeBarn ready to pitch again now to Moon.
- 1:51:17Starts his motion, delivers on to, touch ball, outside, one ball and two strikes.
- 1:51:40Moon backing off McCurrball and hooks in over the pitts. That's ball two, two balls and two strikes.
- 1:51:49The other night against the Wave's, LeBarn came in and saved the ball again.
- 1:52:05That's ball just outside, down to three and two now to Moon.
- 1:52:11Then came on the 13th.
- 1:52:18And last one, lucky's first ball game. Big walk in the crowd, John Stadding in the last half of the eighth inning.
- 1:52:24He'll come up with three runs to move out in front of Cincinnati, four to three.
- 1:52:29They're still at bat. LeBarn pitches, low, ball four.
- 1:52:36Clem gives up, first pitch on balls.
- 1:52:58Back to the plate now as they catch it for St. Louis.
- 1:53:01Toby Landriff, he's gone over two. He walked his last time out.
- 1:53:04It was in the sixth with the leadoff man. He scored one of the seven runs the Cardinals now have.
- 1:53:09LeBarn whittles through to the first. Moon has to dive in on his stomach.
- 1:53:15Down on the Brooklyn bullpen, right-hander Don Besson gets up and starts the throw.
- 1:53:24LeBarn has been having trouble with his shoulder, his left shoulder.
- 1:53:30Ready to work to Landriff, but he backs away from the plate and calls for time.
- 1:53:36Here on the seventh, Boyers leadoff home run has given the St. Louis Cardinals a one-run ball.
- 1:53:43Moon has walked, he's on it first. Roseboro holds the corner.
- 1:53:47And Landriff is the batter to be followed by Casco.
- 1:53:51The final set delivers. Hit the swung out. Almost hits LeBarn in the face as it goes by.
- 1:53:55Ripped out in the center field. Moon goes down a second to hold on as Landriff singles Chaffee to center.
- 1:54:07That's the second hit off LeBarn. Now he's got trouble on the bases behind him. Runners are first and second.
- 1:54:13He's given up one run on the home run to Boyer here in the seventh inning.
- 1:54:18That draws the conference to a mound.
- 1:54:48The plate out of Casco. They're expecting him to bump the infield poles in.
- 1:54:56Kerr falls to him as outside. He gives no indication and takes ball one.
- 1:55:00Runners are first and second. Nobody out in the seventh.
- 1:55:04The Cardinals have gone ahead. On Boyer's home run they lead seven-six.
- 1:55:10Putting on the double play here in the seventh inning with Moon at second and Landriff on the first.
- 1:55:15LeBarn ready. Delivers to Casco. A bit swung on and bounded down to shortstop.
- 1:55:20Knee ruffles. He goes to second for one to throw on the first.
- 1:55:23There's the double play with Moon moving over to third.
- 1:55:27Going down to Learmark. Another thousand lucky for a VA hospital.
- 1:55:34But one left and right point. That's an Army hospital.
- 1:55:38Casco hitting into a double play.
- 1:55:52Now we're waiting for a batter to come out of there. It should be Vaughn McDaniel.
- 1:55:58He's looking around for a half. Hard half at pitching. And here comes the kid.
- 1:56:17He was out there stuffing that ball in pretty well in the sixth inning.
- 1:56:20Let's see how he is for the backman.
- 1:56:25One up third. That's Wally Moon. One run has been scored.
- 1:56:30Seven to six ball game for every St. Lawrence.
- 1:56:35LeBarn delivers pass ball. Kid takes it low.
- 1:56:38He stands about three-quarters deep at the plate. Slightly open stance.
- 1:56:44Sort of cautious and holds it that way down with a knob.
- 1:56:47Six feet, two and a half. He has plenty of swinging room.
- 1:56:50Moon a couple of chopping steps down up third as LeBarn delivers the strike.
- 1:56:54One ball and one strike.
- 1:57:12LeBarn taking plenty of time.
- 1:57:17Looks over at third now. Looks down. Delivers one run. The pitch is swung around and missed. Strike two.
- 1:57:28First game of the doubleheader. Cleveland pulls it out. Beats Baltimore 4-3.
- 1:57:32Ball runs. Six hits and an error. Baltimore three runs. Nine hits. One error.
- 1:57:37Johnson lost it. Connie Johnson. And Raynard Lipski won it for Cleveland.
- 1:57:41First game of the doubleheader. 4-3 Cleveland over Baltimore.
- 1:57:45Third ball swung around and missed. Strike three.
- 1:57:48Well, that's all. That's McDaniel.
- 1:57:51Strikes out. Ten things in the seventh inning.
- 1:57:54One run. There were two base hits.
- 1:57:58There was only one man left on thanks to the double play.
- 1:58:01Another score at the end of six and a half innings of play.
- 1:58:04It is St. Louis seven and the Boston Dodgers have six.
- 1:58:10Well, fans, what do you say we listen in on some thoughts as expressed by a Dodger fan who incidentally is also a lucky smoker.
- 1:58:17Okay? Well, let's go.
- 1:58:20Well, lucky seventh. Time for all the hometown fans to stand up and be counted.
- 1:58:25I guess I'll do likewise.
- 1:58:28Stretch way out. Oh boy, that feels good.
- 1:58:33Now, where are my lucky fresh pack? Nothing like it.
- 1:58:39Lucky seventh and a lucky strike.
- 1:58:45Oh boy, that's crazy.
- 1:58:47They're not just talking when they say luckies taste better.
- 1:58:50Tell you how much better. You light one up.
- 1:58:53You'll say a lucky is the best tasting cigarette you ever smoked.
- 1:59:15Go with a little hand clapping music by Gladys Giddings. We have had the seventh inning stretch.
- 1:59:24Offensively, we go to the last half of the seventh inning. Snider, Vero and Somoli up in that order.
- 1:59:29It's a seven and six ball game with young Vaughn McDaniel.
- 1:59:35Eighteen-year-old youngster on the mound for St. Louis. It's his ball game to win or to lose it. He has the one run and balls to go on.
- 1:59:44Snider standing in has two base hits and an intentional base on balls.
- 1:59:49So he's perfect so far for today, two for two.
- 1:59:52Daniel delivers him. Snider goes after it and doesn't get it.
- 1:59:57Snider batting a two, six, four.
- 2:00:03Del Mazzallo hanging around to be the next batsman.
- 2:00:06Young McDaniel pulls at the peak of his gap, straightens the headpiece, and now he's ready to go.
- 2:00:12Waving that bat back and forth menacingly.
- 2:00:15The pitch, Duke backs off and takes a curve in off the fifth for ball one.
- 2:00:20Soon as we find out what happens with Duke-Snider,
- 2:00:27we'll have the stations identify themselves, so stand by close to the switches, fellas.
- 2:00:35Off for the one-one delivery.
- 2:00:37McDaniel cuts it loose. Snider looks at it and it costs him. It's in there. Strike two.
- 2:00:43It's a nice curve ball.
- 2:00:53Mopi Lander working behind the plate for St. Louis, trying to help pay Sean McDaniel.
- 2:01:00Now for a little fun. Got to watch out for signs.
- 2:01:04McDaniel's ready. The one-two pitch to Duke-Snider. Down it comes. Curve ball, and it's swung on, hit foul.
- 2:01:10Actually hit foul and hit the foot of Snider and rolled out toward the mound, but foul ball.
- 2:01:16On the count of one ball, two strikes.
- 2:01:22Seven-one. On eleven base hits for St. Louis, Brooklyn six runs on nine base hits.
- 2:01:33New York Beach, Cincinnati four-three.
- 2:01:37Single ball game.
- 2:01:39John's four and the Cincinnati Red Lakes three. Final score.
- 2:01:49One-two delivery. Snider swings. He doesn't get a fast-taking curve ball off the fist.
- 2:02:00That's the third strikeout for young Vaughn McDaniel.
- 2:02:06In the sixth inning, he struck out Amarose batting for Robuck.
- 2:02:12Had Gilliam Plow to send in and got Reese on cold strikes.
- 2:02:18So his taste for men has struck out three. Now he'll pitch to Elmavalo.
- 2:02:23Eddie Casco comes across in third base to say something young McDaniel.
- 2:02:28Skinny right-hander, goes to the rosin side.
- 2:02:32Moves up there, his fellow left-hand hitter digs in.
- 2:02:36Elmavalo this afternoon is 0-3. He scored one run.
- 2:02:40In third, and he was on.
- 2:02:43Now a force out. Takes a curve ball, and that's in there for a strike.
- 2:02:54Young McDaniel is spinning in there pretty well this afternoon.
- 2:02:58It's his ball game. The winner doesn't lose it.
- 2:03:00He leads it 7-6. St. Louis 7 and Brooklyn 6.
- 2:03:04Pitches. Vallow swings. Hits a fly ball to deep left field. Going back at Moone to the wall.
- 2:03:08He leaps. He cannot get it. He bounces off the wall. Elmavalo on his way to second.
- 2:03:12Deans in there with a two-bagger.
- 2:03:15That ball missed just by about a quarter-so. Going into a left field fan.
- 2:03:20Elmavalo hitting an outside pitch for a double for the field.
- 2:03:27Young McDaniel has been jolted for the first time.
- 2:03:37Here's another guy who can jolt you if he gets a hold of it.
- 2:03:40Gino Simoli.
- 2:03:43I'll tell you, the fiscal kid has had one base hit this afternoon in three times up.
- 2:03:48He struck out his last time. That was in the fifth inning.
- 2:03:50The only time he got on base he came in as one of the runs to score when Campanella
- 2:03:55in the third inning unloaded his ninth home run of the year.
- 2:04:00It's 238th in his major league career for three runs.
- 2:04:057-6 to score. The Dodgers setting the tide here with one out for seventh.
- 2:04:08Elmavalo on his second base.
- 2:04:11McDaniel set. Looks at second. Delivered.
- 2:04:14Only takes low and outside's the ball one.
- 2:04:31Delavalo takes a short lead at second base.
- 2:04:33Stands up there hands on hips.
- 2:04:38Elvin Dart pulled down a couple steps more on our sort of third base
- 2:04:43and he's back deep at short.
- 2:04:45That feels about straight away to Simoli. They're planning deep.
- 2:04:49Right hand hitter with an overly close stance.
- 2:04:51Gino McDaniel with the stretch.
- 2:04:53Comes up. Delivers. A sidearm curve that's low and away outside.
- 2:04:57Ball two.
- 2:05:03Now this will be the first chance we will have had to watch McDaniel work with pressure on his shoulders.
- 2:05:11Elvavalo in scoring position at second.
- 2:05:14Simoli to be followed by Campanella.
- 2:05:177-6. That's the score. Faber St. Louis.
- 2:05:22Brown delivers. His curve is nicely in at the knees for a strike one.
- 2:05:28Two balls and one strike.
- 2:05:36At the end of three innings, the Yankees nothing in Kansas City, nothing in their ball game, not at KC.
- 2:05:43Repeating the Giants beat Cincinnati this afternoon, 4-3.
- 2:05:48McDaniel ready.
- 2:05:50Two ones to break. Fitz-Fong on. Hit up the first base tie.
- 2:05:54Testos. Makes his play hurriedly.
- 2:05:55The San Mugello is out of hold. Second is the second up.
- 2:05:59Now before we have Campy up there, let's pause for station identification now.
- 2:06:02This is the Brooklyn Dodger, radio network.
- 2:06:05Dial 1460WOKO Albany.
- 2:06:08WOKO, the capital district's most talked about station with downtown studios in the Hotel Wellington.
- 2:06:22Roy Campanella starting to dig in now for the Dodgers.
- 2:06:25Has single.
- 2:06:26Had a three run home run.
- 2:06:28And has walked.
- 2:06:30Campy's batting average stands right this minute at 281.
- 2:06:37The Albany, the lone base runner for the Dodgers, non of the second.
- 2:06:42McDaniel check-team delivers a curve to Campanella at the knees on the corner for a strike.
- 2:06:52Three years of high school competition. This young fellow won 44 and lost 8.
- 2:07:01Very incredible record.
- 2:07:06Skinny left hander ready.
- 2:07:08Sets. Delivers.
- 2:07:11A curve into the dirt, blocked by the chest of Bobby Landrup, his catcher.
- 2:07:17I don't know of anybody in the business of working behind the plate that scrambles more than Bobby Landrup does.
- 2:07:26He's fighting that ball all the time he's in there.
- 2:07:31He'll dive to his knees, he'll jump out on his chest.
- 2:07:36He'll do anything to get a hold of a baseball.
- 2:07:40Now the one-one delivery.
- 2:07:42He hits a swung on the Campanella, bounding ball is short. Dark is up with it. Oops, he threw it across the diamond to Musial.
- 2:07:47And that's all for the Dodgers, left and seven.
- 2:07:52No runs, one hit for Brooklyn. One man was left on. No errors. Underscore at the end of seven.
- 2:07:58Hit a single seven runs, 11 hits, two errors. Brooklyn six runs, 10 hits and no errors.
- 2:08:04And now let's have a word from Jerry Darvidge. You've been resting quite a while, Jerry.
- 2:08:08Now, say you got your copy of the new Shaper Lucky Strike Baseball Guide and Record Book yet?
- 2:08:13This handy little book is a must for baseball fans and particularly Dodger fans.
- 2:08:19159 pages of records, diagrams of the ball parks, team rosters including uniform numbers, World Series and All-Star Game statistics, and much, much more.
- 2:08:30If you want to get your copy, send 50 cents, your name and address to Baseball Guide, Box 35, Brooklyn One, New York.
- 2:08:38Baseball Guide, Box 35, Brooklyn One, New York.
- 2:08:42Yes sir, the Shaper Lucky Strike Guide and Record Book is really something. So order yours right away today.
- 2:08:53Well, we go to the eighth inning now with the top of the Cardinal batting order coming on to face Clem LeVine.
- 2:08:58The Cardinals lead it by 7-6 score. The margin now supplied by Kenny Boyard's leadoff home run against LeVine in the seventh inning.
- 2:09:05Dodgers missed out on a chance by Elmer Vallow there in the seventh inning. Elmer's ball just missed by inches of going into the left field stands to tie it up.
- 2:09:14Elmer got the second, was left-handed there. So we go to play in the eighth inning and again for Lucky Strike, here's Al.
- 2:09:22Don Blessingame will leap things off for these English Cardinals. He'll be starting their fifth batting around.
- 2:09:28He's been called out on strikes. He's tapped to the mound. He's tripled the right center and single the center. He has two for four.
- 2:09:37Don, slender, left-hand batter, going along at 3-0-1. Clem LeVine ready to go to work.
- 2:09:45That's a slender ball game. He's the pitcher of record now for Brooklyn. Delivers the pitcher, the fastball, through to Elmer's strike.
- 2:10:00This is Hughes for the pitchers. This is the third one to work for the dots. Fastball, right in there again. That's strike two.
- 2:10:26Ready, D-O-2 pitch. Blessingame looks. A lot of curveball is outside. One ball and two strikes.
- 2:10:35In fact, to remind you all that we have a very interesting between-game show lined up today.
- 2:10:40The Shinnikok Indian Reservation from Southampton, Long Island, going to put on some of their Indian dancers right here on the field.
- 2:10:49That's a song on. Missed. Strike three. That's all for Blessingame. Strikes out for LeVine here in the eighth inning. Clem is first strikeout.
- 2:11:04Back that up. Make that the second strikeout for LeVine.
- 2:11:14Alvin Barks about it. That's the first pitch and hits the bounding ball to second. Gilliam gloves it.
- 2:11:19On the come in, throws the Rosebird first, and that's it for the Fedlowe shortstop. Two down. Out of now is Sam Neuvio.
- 2:11:29Like we said a minute ago, we have some interesting goings on here at Epitts Field in between games.
- 2:11:36We have a real live Indian princess. Noah Donah. She'll describe them to the folks.
- 2:11:46Describe them to you too, so stay tuned between games today for the Shinnikok Indians from Southampton, Long Island.
- 2:11:53That'll be something.
- 2:11:59Sam Neuvio. Twice a single, once a small one. And four times up.
- 2:12:06And the lifting that batting percentage up quite well. He's batting at 364. Takes the LeVine pass it ball. A giant football one.
- 2:12:22Cranks up again. Fires that pitch in there. Muse you laughter. Peels it back foul. One ball and one strike.
- 2:12:31If you're not keeping score with us and you're looking ahead to the last half of the inning, it'll be Roseboro, Neal, and the pitcher's spot coming up.
- 2:12:50Neuvio letting Muse cool out a little bit while he grinds a new ball around the palms of his hands.
- 2:12:56Now the one-one delivery. A little outside. Ball two. Two balls, one strike.
- 2:13:05On Sam the man. Two down. The bases empty in the top of the eighth inning.
- 2:13:10St. Louis seven. Brooklyn six. New York took Cincinnati this afternoon in the single game at the Polo grounds.
- 2:13:16The final score was four out of three. Jots coming from behind to win it.
- 2:13:22There ball. It's going on. But Muse went back up into right field. Coming on is Gino Somoli looking up into the sun and balls it down.
- 2:13:29So that's the cause of the side in the eighth inning. For St. Louis they go down and bumping across. That's only the second time they've gone down flat.
- 2:13:37Score at the end of seven and a half innings now at St. Louis seven. And the Brooklyn Dodgers have six.
- 2:13:42James, now for a quick trip to the captain's corner. Captain Peely, you're up.
- 2:13:48I'm often asked to name my all-time all-star team of fellas I've played against. It's a tough thing to do.
- 2:13:54And you will notice I have listed quite a few cardinals, but they have had some great clubs during my career.
- 2:14:00Well, here it goes. First base, Johnny Mize. Second base, Red Shandies. Third base, Whitey Kurowski.
- 2:14:08Shortstop, Alvin Dark. Left field, Enos Slaughter. Center field, Willie Maze. Right field, Stan Musial.
- 2:14:16Best pitcher, Ewell Blackwell. Man, he was a nasty one on that mound.
- 2:14:21The all-around best hitter would have to be Stan Musial. I guess it's the kind of a team a manager dreams about.
- 2:14:28Well spoken, Captain Reese. Got a suggestion for you before we focus back on the game, fans.
- 2:14:34Light up a Lucky and enjoy the genuine pleasure of a genuine cigarette.
- 2:14:40You say a Lucky is the best tasting cigarette you ever smoked.
- 2:14:47Last of the eighth Dodgers coming on with Roseboro, Neal and LeBiondo up here to face young Vaughn McDaniel.
- 2:14:53So back to play, and here again is Al.
- 2:14:56Johnny Roseboro has struck out his farthest left, his proper first. He's 0-3 for this one.
- 2:15:02Playing his third game at first base since having been brought in from Montreal.
- 2:15:09And on the way up base hits, Roseboro has one base hit. He got a bunch of singles.
- 2:15:18He's 1-11, hitting at 0-91, the fan batter.
- 2:15:24Vaughn McDaniel, 18-year-old right-hander, kicks and throws a curve. It's a little, the Roseboro for ball one.
- 2:15:31The press and gets up and starts to throw now on the Brooklyn bullpen.
- 2:15:35Probably will have a hitter for LeBion in the last half of this eighth inning.
- 2:15:43Vaughn McDaniel delivers again to this left-hander. Roseboro after, golfs one foul down the first base side, back into the crowd out of play.
- 2:15:52One ball and one strike.
- 2:15:55Three innings of their second game. It's Milwaukee nothing and Philadelphia nothing.
- 2:16:02Lou Bredette going against Kurt Simmons. The first game went to Milwaukee, 3-2.
- 2:16:10Chicago to Pittsburgh in their first game, 4-1.
- 2:16:15Curve ball to Roseboro is high on outside. Two balls and one strike.
- 2:16:19In the second game of the doubleheader at Pittsburgh, at the end of two innings, the Pirates lead the Cubs 2-1.
- 2:16:25And at the end of four and a half innings, Kansas City leads Yankees 2-0.
- 2:16:33Got a final here for you in the first game. We'll give it to you in a minute.
- 2:16:36Last ball, Roseboro cuts and doesn't get it. That's like two. Two balls, two strikes.
- 2:16:42The Chicago Whites are having their first game with Washington. Lead them 4-2. Jim Wilson won another one.
- 2:16:49And Pete Ramos lost it for Washington. 4-2 final, Chicago over Washington, first of two.
- 2:16:59The two-two delivery to Roseboro. Curve ball and he swings and misses, strike three.
- 2:17:05McDaniel's pulling that ball in there. One of them has got four strikeouts now.
- 2:17:12See, he came out in the sixth inning. Set four men down in order, three by strikeouts.
- 2:17:22And then Ballot doubled. Now he's got three more down.
- 2:17:30Facing eight men, he struck out four of them. Charlie Neal about it.
- 2:17:37Charlie's drawn the horse collar so far. He's open three.
- 2:17:40And a pitch hits him on the left hip. Soft curve ball. He twists but can't get away from it. So Neal is on.
- 2:17:48Carl Frillo's going to come up to bat now for LeBine.
- 2:18:05Well, Charlie Neal, face runner, represents the tying line for Brooklyn. John at first base, hit for the pitch.
- 2:18:12Carl Frillo, right-hand hitter, moving on to bat for Kremlin-LeBine.
- 2:18:23Carl batting at 276, 276.
- 2:18:38John went on, last of the eighth inning. Seven to six to score, St. Louis.
- 2:18:43Carl Frillo batting for LeBine. Swings on the pitch and hits a hard-line ball.
- 2:18:49He's straight away from the field. Let's play a ball, and Boyer's under it and holds it down.
- 2:18:54Hersey's throw in and Charlie Neal, halfway to second, has to come back.
- 2:19:01Two down in the last of the eighth inning, about an hour to Jim Gilliam.
- 2:19:08John Fitchburg, at the end of the second inning, out there, doubleheader.
- 2:19:14Wayne has come down and is holding up the ball game. Fitchburg lost the first one. Chicago took them 4-1.
- 2:19:22At the end of four innings, now it's Milwaukee nothing, Philadelphia nothing in their nightcap game.
- 2:19:27Milwaukee took the first from 3-2. John beats Cincinnati in a single game at the Polo grounds for 3.
- 2:19:34At the end of five, Kansas City leads the Yankees 2-0.
- 2:19:38Now let's take a look and see what happens with Gilliam.
- 2:19:44McDaniel checks his runner, looks at Gilliam, feeds a curve into him, and junior slaps a foul on first base.
- 2:19:51No balls and one strike.
- 2:19:55Gilliam's got four times, he's single twice, he's struck out once and fly to center.
- 2:20:00Batting at 2.48.
- 2:20:04Dodgers have a tying run on here in the eighth inning at first base.
- 2:20:08The card moves lead them 7-6.
- 2:20:15McDaniel eyes his runner, Charlie Neal, then looks down at Gilliam, delivers, there goes Neal,
- 2:20:19he's going on and looks out into the field, coming on for it, his moon, and he's got it.
- 2:20:25Well that's all in the eighth inning for Brooklyn.
- 2:20:28The run to win O-Base hits.
- 2:20:30The hit by Smith left one man on, Charlie Neal started his first.
- 2:20:34Goal to score at the end of eight, four innings of play. St. Louis 7 and the Brooklyn Dodgers have 6.
- 2:20:40Gilliam, you got a word for it?
- 2:20:42They got the time now, it's exactly 4.55.
- 2:20:46It's Sunday night time here in Brooklyn and it's light up time, time to light up the lucky.
- 2:20:52So stack them up, stretch out and get set to enjoy the best tasting cigarette you ever smoked, Lucky Strikes.
- 2:21:00You know, fans, a lucky stops at any league and no wonder, it's all cigarettes.
- 2:21:06At time with nothing but time, naturally good tasting tobacco, tobacco that's toasted to taste even better.
- 2:21:14Two, striker, smoother, you bet.
- 2:21:17Make your next pack, Lucky Strikes.
- 2:21:21See if you don't say a lucky is the best tasting cigarette you ever smoked.
- 2:21:30Going to the ninth inning, Dallinus do it for the Cardinals and coming on to the Dodgers is Don Besson to replace Levine.
- 2:21:36Levine would opt for a pinch hitter, Carl Flullo.
- 2:21:39So back to the action and here's Al.
- 2:21:42All right, Jerry, Don Besson is appearing in his 11th ball game, all in relief.
- 2:21:46He's pitched 22 innings.
- 2:21:48His record with the league is one win and two losses.
- 2:21:50His earned run average is 5.73.
- 2:21:53Don Besson out there in the mound now, smooth and dirt, standing outside.
- 2:21:58Not his boss waiting to get up there.
- 2:22:01The Del Hennets, then will come Ken Boyer and Wally Moon.
- 2:22:05If you're looking farther ahead than that through the last half of the ninth inning,
- 2:22:09that's going to be the meat end of the batting order for Brooklyn.
- 2:22:12Reese will lead it off, followed by Snyder and then by Vallow.
- 2:22:14If anyone else is needed, Gino Simoli.
- 2:22:18It's a seven to six ball game, with the St. Louis Cardinals leading by the one run.
- 2:22:22They have seven runs on 11 hits.
- 2:22:24They have two errors.
- 2:22:25And for Brooklyn, six runs, 10 hits and no errors.
- 2:22:28The pitchers of record are Vaughn McDaniel for St. Louis and Glenn LeBine of Brooklyn.
- 2:22:37They're now out of the ball game and Besson is on here to pitch in the ninth inning.
- 2:22:41So we shall see what we shall see as Del Hennets steps up to the plate.
- 2:22:45Del single-tries both times to left field and then the next two times up struck out.
- 2:22:52Still for four.
- 2:22:54Hennets batting a 2.63.
- 2:22:56Right-hander hit her.
- 2:22:59Besson, right-hander gets ready.
- 2:23:01She delivers an overhand fastball and pops that one through for a strike.
- 2:23:18Hennets turns and says something to Sir Corey.
- 2:23:23Now Besson says, is that one pitch?
- 2:23:26Another overhand fastball and it's pitched in the corner. That's strike two.
- 2:23:36Second ball game.
- 2:23:38This afternoon we'll have Will Schmidt going for St. Louis and either Colfax or Padres pitching for Brooklyn.
- 2:23:44That'll be the getaway game for the Dodgers.
- 2:23:47Another overhand fastball is blown away and it counters one ball and two strikes on Del Hennets.
- 2:23:54The Dodgers board their conveyor and move out to Cincinnati to begin third Western swing,
- 2:24:00which will carry them to Cincinnati, St. Louis, Milwaukee and Chicago.
- 2:24:06They'll play 15 games in 14 days on this Western trip.
- 2:24:10Fastball outside.
- 2:24:12Look out, it's two balls, two strikes now on Del Hennets.
- 2:24:16By the way, six of those games are going to be televised right back on Channel 9, 3 at Cincinnati.
- 2:24:21That's on June 17, 19th and 20th. One at St. Louis on the 24th, one at Milwaukee on the 26th of June,
- 2:24:28and then the first game of the doubleheader from Chicago on the 30th of June.
- 2:24:38Of course you can hear all the ball games right where you're tuned right now.
- 2:24:41Bits swung on by Hennets. Found it right back to the mound.
- 2:24:44Besson strikes it, fires it first to Roseboro. There's the first out in the ninth inning.
- 2:24:49One down. The batter coming up now, the Boyars, whose home run leading off in the seventh inning
- 2:24:53has given the St. Louis Cardinals their advantage. Hit it off Glenn LeBarn.
- 2:25:02Boyar has two hits and three at bats.
- 2:25:05Got a single left in the first, walked in the third, was a runner in the fifth on a field of his choice,
- 2:25:12but got a run down at the plate, and then home run in the seventh.
- 2:25:16Boyar batting a 2-5-5.
- 2:25:20Besson curves, even a pitcher swung on, and lays down in the right center field.
- 2:25:23It's in for the base hit. Simole goes over, grabs it.
- 2:25:25Boyar holds on and first contends with a single.
- 2:25:29Gives him three base hits, four times up.
- 2:25:33Single to right center.
- 2:25:35That outbets him, who's hit number one.
- 2:25:38On to the Cardinals, they're in fourth.
- 2:25:42Seven runs, 12 hits. They have two more than the Dodgers have, and one more left.
- 2:25:53The batter will be Wally Moon.
- 2:25:56He's gone over three the last time out he walked.
- 2:25:59Moved around the third, but there he died.
- 2:26:04He stopped the second, grounded the second, and went out on a round ball that hit the pitcher
- 2:26:11and came off to Gilliam, and he was thrown out.
- 2:26:15That time batter.
- 2:26:18Besson fires a pitch out. It's called for by Campanella.
- 2:26:21Boyar was not going, so that's ball one now on Moon.
- 2:26:29Mr. Short at Freddy Hudson would like to get himself an insurance run here in the top of the ninth.
- 2:26:38There's the throw to first. It's not in time.
- 2:26:41Grease comes a closing in at third.
- 2:26:45Dodger infield, apparently expecting Moon might be trying to drop a punt, move Boyar down the second.
- 2:26:53Besson carefully in the position out, checks the lineup.
- 2:26:58Now delivers to Moon.
- 2:27:00Rairs back, Moon takes the pitch low.
- 2:27:02No bunt indication that time.
- 2:27:05Two balls, no strikes is the count on Wally Moon.
- 2:27:10Getting pretty close to station identification time, too.
- 2:27:16We'll be sliding that in in a minute.
- 2:27:19See what happens with Moon here.
- 2:27:23Two-nothing delivery from Don Besson.
- 2:27:26He had a break, the pitcher swung on and filed away.
- 2:27:30Count is two balls and one strike.
- 2:27:34He gets a new ball from Played Empire's Sir Cory and starts to rub it up for Don Besson.
- 2:27:40Drysdale started this afternoon, went to four innings and touched it for three men in the fifth and had to come out of there.
- 2:27:49Wellbuff took over for two innings and was touched for two runs, including, or two hits, including a home run, which manufactured four runs, all told.
- 2:27:59Don gave up a run, two hits.
- 2:28:04Besson billetters now on the 2-1 count.
- 2:28:06The winner breaks again, the pitcher swung on.
- 2:28:07There's a half-mile ball to deep left field.
- 2:28:09Bellow back, still going back, under and holds it down.
- 2:28:13Boyer standing on in second base, has to turn and come charging back to first.
- 2:28:17And let's pause now for station identification.
- 2:28:19This is the Brooklyn Dodger Radio Network.
- 2:28:23Peter Tripp plays the nation's best-selling records every Sunday from 5 to 8 on his program, The Nation's Hits.
- 2:28:29This is the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer radio station.
- 2:28:35Dial 1460, WOKO Albany, WOKO, the capital district's most talked-about station with downtown studios in the Hotel Wellington.
- 2:28:46Hit and play drives, single to center in the seventh inning. Besson well scores the first, keeps Boyer close.
- 2:28:55In the last half of the ninth inning, it will be Reese, Snyder, and Bono, the batsmen for the Brooklyn Dodgers.
- 2:29:01Seven to six to score, St. Louis.
- 2:29:04Besson wheels the pitch in there, Landruf hitting left-hander, takes it low into the dirt, and he gets away from Campanella, but Boyer cannot break.
- 2:29:11Ball kicking out in front of Campanella. One ball and no strikes.
- 2:29:29Besson's ready, so is Landruf. There's another throw over the first, can't avoid him from getting too much of a lead.
- 2:29:42Besson's ready. His one-hole pitch to the plate to Landruf comes whistle on in there, and he'll be after.
- 2:29:47Loops one out and left field, it's in for a base hit, Simone comes over, grabs that ball quickly.
- 2:29:51Boyer on his way to third, there goes the throw down, it's not in time. Boyer gets there.
- 2:29:57Landruf, hitting behind Luana, moves him around to third base for two down.
- 2:30:03Looping single hit into right field. That'll be hit number two of Besson.
- 2:30:08That'll be the Cardinals' 13th base hit in the ball game.
- 2:30:12Looking over the situation in the National League, Milwaukee took Commodoffee in the first game 3-2,
- 2:30:17at the end of five innings of the second game, and Commodoffee no score.
- 2:30:21Chicago took Pittsburgh 4-1 in the first game, at the end of two innings with Pittsburgh leading 2-1,
- 2:30:27rain came down, that ball game is being held up.
- 2:30:31In a single affair this afternoon at the Polo grounds, the Giants walked back from behind, took Cincinnati 4-3.
- 2:30:41And at the end of five and a half innings, the Yankees have picked up a lead on Kansas City now 3-2.
- 2:30:46They scored three times in the top six innings.
- 2:30:50At the plate now, hitting right-handed is Eddie Casco.
- 2:30:53Besson's fastball cracks in there low for ball one.
- 2:31:09Two down, two on. Landruf is first, Boyer is third.
- 2:31:13Last half of the ninth inning, St. Louis 7, Brooklyn 6. Besson delivers to Casco, low and outside.
- 2:31:20Two balls, no strikes.
- 2:31:25The last half of the ninth inning, Reese, Snyder, and Vano will be the Dodger backman backed up by Simoli,
- 2:31:32if he should be needed.
- 2:31:41The lead on this home stand, by the way, against the Western Clubs is six and six. They've won six and lost six.
- 2:31:46Bits of swung on. Hit out to right field, backing up to the scoreboard is Simoli, and is able to make the catch.
- 2:31:54He almost stepped back too far.
- 2:31:56He reached down around the shoe tops to make that catch too.
- 2:32:02That's it. End of ninth inning, four St. Louis, no runs, two hits.
- 2:32:06They strand two men, runners are first and third. So no errors.
- 2:32:10St. Louis 4 going into the last half of the ninth inning. St. Louis 7 and Brooklyn has six.
- 2:32:16So let's get back to the action, and for lucky strike, here's Al.
- 2:32:20All right, Jerry, Reese is over four. He's popped the short, a base runner on an error in the third,
- 2:32:25flied to left and was called out on strikes.
- 2:32:29Reese batting a 222. McDaniel was backed up by Larry Jackson in the St. Louis bullpen.
- 2:32:40The total's going into the last half of the ninth inning. Four St. Louis, seven runs, 13 hits, two errors.
- 2:32:45They've got ten on. Six runs, ten hits, no errors. Seven stranded by Brooklyn.
- 2:32:50Reese, that the plate takes a curve low for ball one.
- 2:32:55That's the last chance for the Brooklyn Dodgers.
- 2:33:07One-oh delivering, Reese takes a curve, and that's low. That's ball two.
- 2:33:20McDaniel, young 18-year-old right-hander, bidding for his first ball game either way, delivers a curve,
- 2:33:30and Reese takes high under the 10-crochet. That's ball three.
- 2:33:44Now, I'll just let you lucky up now and stay right with us.
- 2:33:51Three-oh delivered to Reese. Over first strike. Reese got to throw his bat away and go off the course.
- 2:33:57Mike DeCorey called him back. Reese, matter and bellow.
- 2:34:11That's a long time for McDaniel during the St. Louis pitching.
- 2:34:15That's a side from Hopeland. Comes once, throws three-one.
- 2:34:19That's a pitch in for strike two.
- 2:34:25Now, Reese will have to be guarding that plate rather carefully, and young McDaniel will have to be coming in around it somewhere.
- 2:34:38Reese moving back up to the plate now, digs in. Now, the three-two count on McDaniel starts his motion.
- 2:34:47Delivers Reese. That's not the curve, and it's in there for strike three-four.
- 2:34:53That hurts Reese. He's gone on talking to DeCorey. Reese is called out on strike.
- 2:35:02Strike out for young McDaniel. Reese is vehemently protesting as Manager Olsen comes out of the dugout and talks to Reese.
- 2:35:20Strike out. McDaniel faces 12 men and gets five up by strike out. Duke sliders the batter, struck him out to seven.
- 2:35:34Duke has two for three. Driven in one run today. McDaniel's fastball is into the dirt. It's ball one.
- 2:35:54One out, nobody on. Last of the ninth inning, St. Louis seven, Brooklyn six.
- 2:36:00McDaniel pitching from the first base side of Pitcher's River, delivers Snyder-Dix over the fifth first strike.
- 2:36:06That's Snyder's turn. Do a little beeping. One ball, one strike.
- 2:36:27McDaniel delivers and Snyder after hits a bombing ball to second.
- 2:36:30Wapping games got it on the big hop. Throws the first to Mews and Snyder goes down.
- 2:36:35Oh, it's on a film of valor now.
- 2:36:48Brady Hutchinson comes off of St. Louis bench and going out to talk to young Vaughn McDaniel. This is the brother of Lindy McDaniel, the younger brother.
- 2:36:59Kid has his chance to win his first ball game.
- 2:37:08Vaughn O'Rofson comes bouncing off the Dodger bench and meets Mike Secori halfway between the Dodger bench and home plate.
- 2:37:16Before he turned around and put something back to the dugout, it's either Vaughn O'Rofson out of the ball game or somebody else.
- 2:37:25But Vaughn is really chilling and enjoying with him right now.
- 2:37:31Ball popped up on called strikes on Reese and Snyder.
- 2:37:41Unfortunately, the recording of this game is missing the final out. Rest assured there were no last minute heroics after the tape cuts off.
- 2:37:47The final out was a routine ground ball to first base unassisted.
