- 0:09revenue in your business, TuneIn to amplify your marketing
- 0:13message with Christine Campbell Rappin.
- 0:15Every week, we're going to take you through how to build an
- 0:17audience of buyers, mastering your marketing message, making
- 0:21offers. Welcome back, everybody.
- 0:25This week, I want to bring you into a conversation that I had
- 0:30with one of my clients that sits within our private mentorship
- 0:34program, the Business Scale Accelerator.
- 0:36Because I think that Janet's story is not just unique to her.
- 0:42It is something we see time and time again with the entrepreneur
- 0:45community. And it might just be of service
- 0:48to you today. And it's this, what is the
- 0:52decision that most business owners avoid?
- 0:57That's what we're going to be tackling today on Amplify Your
- 0:59marketing message. I'm your host, Christine
- 1:01Campbell Rappin, and I will tell you that business growth is
- 1:06elegantly simple. That doesn't mean that it's
- 1:10effortless and that every decision is black and white or
- 1:15that we execute even when our gut, our knowledge and all the
- 1:19signs are on the wall. And So what is that question?
- 1:23What is that decision that most business owners avoid?
- 1:27It is knowing when to cut what isn't working and reallocate the
- 1:35time, money, bandwidth and resources from a losing strategy
- 1:40and redirect them into another pathway.
- 1:45It sounds so simple, right? Just stop what doesn't work.
- 1:50And yet it is a really hard blind spot to truly see because
- 1:56we want it to work. Truthfully, it's that simple.
- 2:02We want it to work. And what that means is it feels
- 2:07easier to stay the course. It feels easier to constantly be
- 2:13in the I'll just tweak it, I'll edit it, I'll make one change.
- 2:17And that cycle becomes the definition of insanity.
- 2:21Hello. Anybody else spend hours
- 2:24tweaking their website thinking that the websites the problem,
- 2:28the copies, the problem, the layouts the problem, that
- 2:31graphics are the problem on and on and on and on and on and
- 2:34you're saying well my website is failing and part of the issue is
- 2:36not the website itself because of bad website.
- 2:41If you have the right audience that sees, it will still create
- 2:47action and response to a call to action.
- 2:50But a website that simply never has traffic, never has the ideal
- 2:56client being driven to it will always just be static.
- 3:01It won't produce results. And so I see people spend so
- 3:05much time wasting in their content when nobody sees it.
- 3:11And that's why we hear this expression.
- 3:12I feel like the best kept secret.
- 3:15Well, you are. Let's just be clear, call a
- 3:19spade a spade, you are. You don't have enough audience
- 3:23seeing your content, so it's not the content that's necessarily
- 3:27the problem. So tweaking it, refining,
- 3:29adjusting it is just noise. It's just distraction and you
- 3:35can give it infinite amount of time and not see changed
- 3:40results. Hmm, feels kinda heavy, right?
- 3:46Well, here's the truth that every month you stay with a
- 3:50losing strategy, IE fixing or not fixing the right problem
- 3:59costs you so much money, so much energy, so much time, and it
- 4:08will lead you to that place of burnout.
- 4:10And my clients all know this. It's something that they love
- 4:14and hate about me is I believe this firmly.
- 4:17There's no such thing as burnout.
- 4:19When you're building something you love, when it feels like
- 4:22oxygen, when you are in a place of burnout or overwhelm, what I
- 4:27hear is that you're not winning enough.
- 4:31Because when you're winning, it becomes worth it.
- 4:34And it doesn't mean that you don't periods where you're tired
- 4:36or exhausted and you're like, I bit off more than I can chew.
- 4:39Come on, let's have an honest conversation.
- 4:41It doesn't mean that, but it means that you're romancing.
- 4:45Quitting comes off the table. And so I have clients that come
- 4:51into my space. And this particular client has
- 4:54come in on more than one occasion over the last several
- 4:56years saying nothing's working, the sky is falling.
- 4:59I don't know, should I pull the plug?
- 5:01And I said, let's have a really frank conversation.
- 5:04And she's like, I, I know I need it.
- 5:07And so we sat down with great trust between us, with her and I
- 5:12on the same side of the table talking about the what she
- 5:15envisioned, what her current reality is.
- 5:18And this is what I said to her. You know you need to cut what
- 5:24isn't working. We've had this conversation more
- 5:28than once and you are still tweaking, hoping, wasting time
- 5:35with strategies and rooms that are not serving.
- 5:39You are not creating the result and it is not a question of
- 5:44time. It's not a question of whether
- 5:48you are effective in that space or that strategy is that you are
- 5:52in the wrong damn strategy. And she's like, I know Christine
- 5:59and I'm like, well, you're making the mistake most business
- 6:02owners do. You're not changing.
- 6:05You're not deciding to be done with it and it's costing you
- 6:11your belief in yourself and it's leading to tears.
- 6:16And I gave her a big hug and said it is up to you to decide
- 6:22your future. Because businesses that scale
- 6:26faster than those that are average or mediocre, which is
- 6:29the vast majority of businesses out there, have one key trait in
- 6:34their leadership is that they make decisions faster.
- 6:38They recognize the writing on the wall.
- 6:41And sometimes, let's be honest, that wall and that writing, it's
- 6:47really hard to see ourselves because it's a reckoning.
- 6:52And she said to me when this conversation was, you know, we,
- 6:55we teed up to this conversation in our call because she left me
- 6:58a voicemail and said, this is what's happening.
- 6:59I'm having a meltdown. This isn't working.
- 7:02Should I quit my business? What's going on?
- 7:04And I said, OK, let's come into this conversation with a frank,
- 7:08trusted safe space. Your business is not failing.
- 7:13The evidence does not indicate that.
- 7:15Do you want it to grow faster? Do you want to create more
- 7:18revenue? Do you want to have more wins?
- 7:21100% across the board where it feels like you're having what I
- 7:28call Flathead syndrome? If you think of Homer Simpson
- 7:31from the cartoon, it's the hand to the head dope.
- 7:34Oh, I know better. I'm wasting time.
- 7:40And I said to her, and I say it to most of my clients at some
- 7:43point because they cannot see it for themselves and they need a
- 7:48safe space, a mentor and person who will be able to shine the
- 7:52light respectfully into it and said you're hiding from the
- 7:54truth. It's not working.
- 7:58And I want to bring the other side of that coin here because
- 8:04one of my favorite books and one that I encouraged Janet to read
- 8:09in this crossroads was I Need You to Look at 3 Feet from Gold
- 8:13Napoleon Hills book. Because I said there is truth
- 8:17that you are, I see it unbiased, non judgmental outsider.
- 8:24I see what's working and the issues you're not having enough
- 8:28wins. And the reason you're not having
- 8:30enough wins is because you're distracted and things that are
- 8:33not working. The wrong room.
- 8:37A room full of non buyers, complainers and mediocre
- 8:40thinkers. You're wasting time with people
- 8:44who you're convincing need to invest.
- 8:47Ready buyers who are ready to implement never need to be
- 8:50convinced. They're fast movers, their
- 8:51decision makers and they are result driven.
- 8:55And they said, if you need to be reminded, I want you to look at
- 8:57your last client, the one who paid you.
- 9:00What did he have to say? He just had sent her this
- 9:03incredible testimonial on how her impact had driven results
- 9:08for his business. And I said that story that this
- 9:12client gave you is their reality.
- 9:15It's a reflection of your services.
- 9:18It's a reflection of what's working, and so the business
- 9:22isn't failing. You're not failing.
- 9:24You're getting caught in distractions that don't serve
- 9:27you, and I need you to prioritize your success.
- 9:32And I watched this just gigantic weight fall from her shoulders
- 9:39and she said this. You might relate.
- 9:43I know I'm spending time in rooms that are social clubs, not
- 9:51business development activity. And I'm not suggesting to her.
- 9:56So we're clear that she cut these social clubs entirely.
- 10:00But she needs to recognize what is business development activity
- 10:04and what is social peer-to-peer fun because I don't think we
- 10:08need to trade that. I think we need both.
- 10:10But the balance has to shift if her results will shift.
- 10:15And so I said, look at your calendar.
- 10:17You're so busy championing somebody else's event, somebody
- 10:20else's room, somebody else's activity that you're never
- 10:23championing your own. You're not championing it enough
- 10:28to create the momentum and the speed you want.
- 10:31And it's hiding behavior. She's like, I know.
- 10:37And so I said you've got to decide.
- 10:39And she said, I'm spending so much time, so much money in
- 10:44things that don't create an ROI. I've invested in courses that
- 10:48were nice to have but not necessary.
- 10:51I got swept up into promises and shiny objects that cost me money
- 10:55and were distractions, but I never operationalized them.
- 10:59I'm in rooms where I love seeing these people, but they're not my
- 11:02people. They don't invest in businesses.
- 11:04They want it more than they're committed to it.
- 11:09And here's what she also said then.
- 11:12It was something that really lifted my heart.
- 11:13She said yours is the only bill every month I pay that I don't
- 11:17regret or think twice about paying.
- 11:21I know that the only person I'm getting support from is you.
- 11:23That actually moves the needle, actually leads to clients,
- 11:27actually leads to the results like the testimonial I just
- 11:29received. So I need your support to help
- 11:34me cut what's not working. So we made the following
- 11:39commitments and I want you to see what I do in real life
- 11:41action because I want you to have somebody in your life that
- 11:43does this for you. And if you do not have somebody
- 11:46immediately and you want one and do you think that I could be
- 11:50supportive for you, I want you to invite yourself to have a
- 11:53conversation with me because I'm on any social platform,
- 11:55Christine Campbell, rapping.com. And you can also book a direct
- 11:58conversation with me if you go to the work with me and our
- 12:01services page on our website. But what I said to her is, First
- 12:05things first, moving forward, I want you to make me a pinky
- 12:08promise. Anytime that you are looking at
- 12:12making an additional investment in a course, in a community, in
- 12:16a luncheon, in a networking room, I want you to come and
- 12:19tell me about it. I want to talk about the
- 12:22financial ROI on it. I want you to build a business
- 12:25case for why this makes sense because I don't want you to work
- 12:28more hours. She has a young daughter.
- 12:31She wants to be focused on her daughter.
- 12:32And we're heading into the period of school time where
- 12:35there will be on a break. And I said you want to be
- 12:37present. So I don't want more hours, I
- 12:40want more effectiveness. So the First things first, when
- 12:43you're looking at outlay of capital, IE your credit card or
- 12:48your cash, I want you to tell me why you're doing it.
- 12:51Come to me, we'll talk about it. I want you to sell.
- 12:54Tell me what success looks like having made the investment.
- 12:58And some of it will be a social jolly and some of it will be, I
- 13:02want to implement this strategy in my business in the next 90
- 13:06days. And if it is something where
- 13:08you're entertained but not operationalizing in the next 30
- 13:12to 90 days, we are going to say no to it.
- 13:16And then while we're working week to week, and this is a
- 13:19client I work with weekly, we're going to ensure that I'm going
- 13:23to help you integrate knowledge to the strategies so that you
- 13:27see more wins. I said, how does that make you
- 13:32feel? And she's like, I need that
- 13:36because I'm struggling to cut what's not working.
- 13:39And she was clear. She's like, I know I'm the
- 13:42problem here, but to be better you've got to make decisions
- 13:48that improve your long term outcomes.
- 13:53So I said that's what we're going to do #1 #2 I want to
- 13:57really talk about what rooms serve you because while you're
- 14:02in rooms right now that for the vast majority are women social
- 14:07clubs, not entrepreneurial communities where winds happen.
- 14:13I want you out of that room. 75% of what you're currently doing
- 14:17by that time back still spend 25% of your time.
- 14:19Go to an event a month, go to an event 1/4.
- 14:22That's fine. These are good people, good
- 14:23hearts, and you enjoy their company.
- 14:25But do it from a reward perspective.
- 14:27Versus I am playing in the game of pseudo business development
- 14:31activity because it's not business development activity.
- 14:34It's the wrong audience, not your buyer, not the right room
- 14:38and I want you to and I challenged her openly to get
- 14:41clear what is a better room. She's like, I don't know.
- 14:44And what did I say? You guys will be shocked BS you
- 14:48absolutely do no better. Do no better rooms because we
- 14:51have identified some. Her particular business is not
- 14:55the online entrepreneur. Her particular business is
- 14:58already a business that is past being a solopreneur.
- 15:02So stop being in rooms of solopreneurs.
- 15:06Most solopreneurs want to stay solopreneurs.
- 15:09They buy themselves a job that's not the client she serves.
- 15:14So I said, you know, other communities where there are
- 15:18companies which typically have 5 to 25 employees, That's a room
- 15:23that's more fit for your services.
- 15:28I also said to her you need to be off rooms that are online
- 15:33focused businesses. You need traditional bricks and
- 15:36mortars. She particularly serves really
- 15:38well in the trade space. So I said there are tons of
- 15:41trade communities. There are tons of businesses
- 15:44that are more traditional than the online coaching healer
- 15:48energy space that would buy your services, that want the outcomes
- 15:53you bring, that do not have a thinking partner that you could
- 15:56provide for them. So I said BS.
- 16:01I said what are the three rooms you need to be in?
- 16:04What are the three people who curate rooms that have been more
- 16:07effective that brought you your first client that had such a
- 16:09great testimonial? I said you have them, don't you?
- 16:13She said I have the list. I said, so do something with the
- 16:16damn list. So we sat there and I watched
- 16:19and she put in her calendar. I'm going to phone Elaine.
- 16:22I'm going to ask Elaine, what other communities should I be
- 16:25part of? And I have had opportunities to
- 16:27talk about the chamber and I should go talk to our local
- 16:31chamber and see where their next event is and go test it out.
- 16:36In less than 30 minutes. We cut what wasn't working.
- 16:40We had a frank conversation because truthfully, tweaking,
- 16:44adjusting and flogging a dead horse is still a dead horse
- 16:48every month. You cannot afford to work what
- 16:51on things that are not delivering an ROI.
- 16:54And I said it when I started, it's sometimes very hard to see
- 16:58the forest for the trees for ourselves.
- 17:00We struggle to know, is this a bad strategy or I'm I the
- 17:04problem? So don't expect yourself to see
- 17:07a blind spot. That's not easy.
- 17:10But she is smart. Are you?
- 17:14She has me in her corner of paid business mentor who's like
- 17:18enough of the BS. You are flogging a dead horse.
- 17:22You're in the wrong room. It's a social club.
- 17:24Get out. I need you to be more effective,
- 17:27not more hours, because the wasted energy is leading you to
- 17:31this belief of nothing's working, the sky is falling,
- 17:34tears, tantrums and this very big heavy burden.
- 17:39Should I keep going? And I said this, and I say this
- 17:42with great integrity and truth. I will never bring you on as a
- 17:47client if I do not believe your business has legs, if I do not
- 17:51believe your business has a sustainable future, if I do not
- 17:54believe that you can create enough income to have a
- 17:56lifestyle that you want, I just won't do it.
- 18:00So I reminded Janet. I said, Janet, do you trust me?
- 18:04They said, yeah, you're the only bill I don't mind paying.
- 18:06I know you will be honest and you will not sugarcoat it.
- 18:10And I need straight talk, said Janet.
- 18:12Your business foundation is solid.
- 18:15You're in the wrong room. We need to quit those rooms,
- 18:19reallocate the time, and we need to work the system you built
- 18:24because over the last year, we've built her the foundations
- 18:27of knowing who to look for, what to say, how to do it.
- 18:29We have a dashboard, we track KPI's.
- 18:31We're looking at the money. And I also said this to her, I
- 18:35owe you an apology because while you have spent on courses
- 18:39without some visibility to me, that's on me.
- 18:42I should have had visibility to it because I don't want you
- 18:46bleeding money and moving forward.
- 18:47You have my commitment to helping you make better
- 18:53financial decisions and actually implement, because that's the
- 18:58biggest thing. Businesses that scale faster
- 19:01decide faster. They implement faster.
- 19:03They recognize when we simply have had not enough runway to
- 19:08see compound effect take shape and when to say this is simply a
- 19:13brick wall we're not going to overcome.
- 19:17Or if we're going to overcome it, we have a frank
- 19:19conversation. Is it worth it at that price?
- 19:23Because you will always, as a business owner, have to weigh up
- 19:27what's worth it at that price. I said, Janet, how many years
- 19:32you been in business? She's like 10.
- 19:34I said, are you tired of not winning?
- 19:36If you're tired of not winning, you gotta cut what's not working
- 19:39and where it is working. I need you to double down.
- 19:43I need to prioritize it. And here's the truth.
- 19:46She needed and I bet you do too. You must prioritize your own
- 19:51success. Stop dragging problems, obvious
- 19:54problems from the outside and fix them.
- 20:00If you've listened to this episode, you know something
- 20:02needs to change. You know something fundamental
- 20:06is a dead horse. If you don't know how to flip
