- 0:08Speaker 1: This is me eat your podcast coming at you shirtless,
- 0:12Speaker 1: severely bug bitten in my case underwear listening Hunt Me podcast.
- 0:18Speaker 1: You can't predict anything presented by First, like creating proven
- 0:23Speaker 1: versatile hunting apparel from Marino bass layers to technical outerwear
- 0:27Speaker 1: for every hunt first like go farther, stay longer. All right,
- 0:35Speaker 1: Happy New Year, Happy New Year, Happy New Year. It
- 0:39Speaker 1: just doesn't feel like because it's not what do you mean? Yeah,
- 0:52Speaker 1: I gotta just I's gonna come flat out and tell
- 0:54Speaker 1: people we're recording this before. It's a long No, it's
- 0:58Speaker 1: not a long story. Listening on the second dude, it
- 1:01Speaker 1: takes him and stuff to turn around, So this is
- 1:03Speaker 1: it's not the new year. We're gonna talk about new
- 1:07Speaker 1: yourself because it's a new year mood. Dude, Like on Spotify,
- 1:10Speaker 1: Oh yeah, that was the stupidest thing in the world.
- 1:13Speaker 1: I mean, God bless him loves Spotify. I listened to
- 1:16Speaker 1: listen you wanna you wanna know something? I'm in the
- 1:19Speaker 1: way ass. See in my house, I have a Sonos system,
- 1:24Speaker 1: but I run Spotify through Sonos. I'm in the way
- 1:27Speaker 1: ass top tier of time spent listening, and I am in.
- 1:34Speaker 1: I am in the point oh one top percent of
- 1:38Speaker 1: Sharon Vanett and fans Sharon Vanett and I've listening to
- 1:45Speaker 1: more based on this room I listen. I listened to
- 1:49Speaker 1: more Sharon van Att and theoint I don't. I can't
- 1:53Speaker 1: even do the math If I'm in the top point
- 1:55Speaker 1: oh one percent of fans? What what? Who am I? Who?
- 2:01Speaker 1: How many more? What percent am I listening to more of?
- 2:04Speaker 1: So you're so you're you're Spotify wrapped. Wasn't completely bungled
- 2:08Speaker 1: by your kids? Because mine, that's its completely, it's gone.
- 2:13Speaker 1: It doesn't know. Those sons of bitches. I can't stand
- 2:16Speaker 1: when they do that. It's terrible. I've had, like I
- 2:20Speaker 1: don't want to name names, but I had someone affiliated
- 2:24Speaker 1: with my household really screw up my program. They weren't
- 2:30Speaker 1: able to I like wage war on them on that.
- 2:37Speaker 1: They have an Alexa you know the Alexa deals. It's
- 2:40Speaker 1: it's tide to your account, right, Yeah, but you should
- 2:42Speaker 1: not have Like Amazon never had any music, but now
- 2:44Speaker 1: they have. They went they're kind of going to Spotify.
- 2:47Speaker 1: Now they have a ton of music, but they just
- 2:48Speaker 1: opened up something where you know, like normally they're like
- 2:51Speaker 1: Amazon had its own service, but there wasn't a huge
- 2:53Speaker 1: selection first launch, but now they've got a lot more.
- 2:55Speaker 1: So you'd be like, uh, play me some hold addie, right,
- 3:00Speaker 1: and they be like here, here's something similar. But now
- 3:04Speaker 1: they got a bunch. Anyhow, somehow my kids figured out
- 3:06Speaker 1: for a while how to get into Spotify. I was
- 3:08Speaker 1: throwing my stuff off because they like those stupid songs.
- 3:11Speaker 1: Now you're in the top. No, they're not into that,
- 3:16Speaker 1: but they like a song called Pancake roll Dumb. It's
- 3:19Speaker 1: just these these goofy songs. There's one that my kids
- 3:22Speaker 1: love called jingle Burgers. It's just it's terrible. It's just
- 3:25Speaker 1: it's adult singing and high pitched voices to just to like,
- 3:27Speaker 1: you know, I don't know, kids love it. And there
- 3:31Speaker 1: was recently something that came out. Here's why I hate
- 3:36Speaker 1: like one of the reasons I hate virality. This is
- 3:38Speaker 1: a good kick off to the New Year's thing, right,
- 3:41Speaker 1: one of the years I hate I hate Like. Did
- 3:43Speaker 1: you say something that was everywhere? It was like a
- 3:46Speaker 1: kid talking about corn. Oh yeah, it's like, who gets listen,
- 3:50Speaker 1: let me tell you something, people, why you cute? People
- 3:55Speaker 1: liked it? Because people liked it, meaning if I took
- 3:58Speaker 1: a hundred Americans off. Let's say I had that recording
- 4:01Speaker 1: and I'm the only guy that knew about the recording. Okay,
- 4:04Speaker 1: I pull a hundred Americans randomly off the street. I
- 4:07Speaker 1: sit them down, I say, watch this video on my phone.
- 4:10Speaker 1: Is this a life changing video for you? They'd all go, no,
- 4:15Speaker 1: kid's cute, Kid's cute. But no. However, if you pump
- 4:20Speaker 1: into America's head that something has that like everyone is
- 4:24Speaker 1: liking it. They like it. They like it because they
- 4:29Speaker 1: like it. For instance, whenever it became like a thing
- 4:34Speaker 1: to say, like a dad joke, Okay, once it had
- 4:37Speaker 1: a name, it became a thing. But they need language,
- 4:44Speaker 1: Like Americans need language to make things a thing, and
- 4:47Speaker 1: they need like they're like a dad, this a dad
- 4:51Speaker 1: bod Okay. So like this whole genre of like dad
- 4:55Speaker 1: bob dad joke came out and then everybody becomes aware
- 4:57Speaker 1: of it because there's now language to dis gribes something
- 5:00Speaker 1: that's always existed, but they didn't know to care because
- 5:03Speaker 1: they had no language around it. Likewise, the stupid kid
- 5:06Speaker 1: with the corn thing, there's a song, but they took
- 5:10Speaker 1: the kid talking about corn and said it the music.
- 5:12Speaker 1: My kids play that all the time. Yeah, I used
- 5:14Speaker 1: dad bod now, but before I would just be like,
- 5:16Speaker 1: I'm getting kind of fat because you do you know what.
- 5:21Speaker 1: People would describe The Whole Steady as dad rock. Sure,
- 5:25Speaker 1: that's like drug addict. It's all about it's like they're
- 5:28Speaker 1: all it's all drug addict stuff. Yeah, but they're all
- 5:30Speaker 1: they're all cleaned up and old now so you're thinking
- 5:32Speaker 1: as yacht rock. No, dad, dad rock is a dad.
- 5:35Speaker 1: Dad rocks the thing. Yea rocks a whole different thing.
- 5:38Speaker 1: I'm I'm trying to I'm here with you. The Whole
- 5:41Speaker 1: Steady is all about. Wilco is another example of dad rock.
- 5:45Speaker 1: Absolutely yeah, And there's like a lot of like there's
- 5:48Speaker 1: a lot of there's a lot of weirdly, they have
- 5:52Speaker 1: a lot of drug references and a lot of spousal
- 5:55Speaker 1: abuse references, which is like a wrinkle the Whole Steady.
- 6:00Speaker 1: It's just like drug addict music. It's like about drug addicts,
- 6:02Speaker 1: but dads love it. It's not it's not like it's
- 6:05Speaker 1: not you know, it's not music about dad's. Uh, that's
- 6:11Speaker 1: a great band. Well the time about you were talking
- 6:13Speaker 1: about how you're the best band ever sharing how it's like,
- 6:19Speaker 1: oh I know what I was getting at. Jeez, man,
- 6:21Speaker 1: it's been a long time since I started making my
- 6:23Speaker 1: point point being it has the feeling of the end
- 6:27Speaker 1: of the year because I just got served, uh my Spotify,
- 6:31Speaker 1: that stupid thing with the like psychedelics on Spotify that
- 6:34Speaker 1: tells you what you're up to. Over to course, your
- 6:36Speaker 1: favorite genre is a song. It's just joining and it's
- 6:39Speaker 1: all like you're looking through a kaleidoscope. Yeah, I don't
- 6:41Speaker 1: like it. Um So, anyways, it's in the air. It's
- 6:45Speaker 1: a long road to get there, but we got there
- 6:47Speaker 1: in New Year's in the air. Chester just told me
- 6:51Speaker 1: something New Year's ish. Yeah, there's a ice out there,
- 6:56Speaker 1: starting to be some ice out there. Oh no, no, no, no,
- 6:58Speaker 1: you're you're dip, quit and plan. Oh yeah, Well I
- 7:03Speaker 1: got two other buddies, and those guys are real into fitness.
- 7:07Speaker 1: Are they real into dip? First of all? So yeah,
- 7:10Speaker 1: but I want to get to how what you said
- 7:12Speaker 1: wasn't that smart? We're going yeah, I'm I'm getting there.
- 7:15Speaker 1: I mean, that's not what I They're real into fitness,
- 7:19Speaker 1: and all three of us occasionally like to dip. Actually
- 7:24Speaker 1: occasionally we like to dip. And they were like how
- 7:28Speaker 1: about whoever caves first, meaning we're gonna try and quit chewing,
- 7:35Speaker 1: and whoever puts it a dip in their lip has
- 7:37Speaker 1: to swim a mile in the pool. And I pointed out,
- 7:43Speaker 1: if they're into fitness, how is it a punishment? I
- 7:47Speaker 1: think if you had a bunch of like a bunch
- 7:50Speaker 1: of unathletic fats's who hate any kind of exercise and
- 7:55Speaker 1: they wanted to quit dip and the punishment would be
- 7:57Speaker 1: you had to swim a mile in the pool. No,
- 8:00Speaker 1: I get it, And that's why I responded to them,
- 8:02Speaker 1: like how hard it is it to swim a mile
- 8:05Speaker 1: in a pool? Like I need some context here because
- 8:08Speaker 1: I could probably benefit from this swimming thing, you know.
- 8:12Speaker 1: But they said it's extremely difficult, especially if you don't swim.
- 8:16Speaker 1: So they don't want to swim the mile on the pool.
- 8:18Speaker 1: I don't know because they I don't think they do,
- 8:23Speaker 1: but you do see what I'm saying. Of course, It's
- 8:26Speaker 1: it's like like you said, like if all of us
- 8:29Speaker 1: were like, whoever has a drink first, they have to
- 8:33Speaker 1: go hunting, like you, like you just said exactly when
- 8:38Speaker 1: my old man quit smoking, and I'll tell what he did.
- 8:41Speaker 1: He how he finally quit. It was like a money
- 8:44Speaker 1: related bet. He gave ten to one odds and got
- 8:48Speaker 1: to be There was no way he could afford to
- 8:49Speaker 1: not There's no way he could afford to not quit
- 8:53Speaker 1: because he was given ten dollars on the dollar to
- 8:56Speaker 1: a bunch of people, a lot of people. How much
- 8:59Speaker 1: did he make in the I think he made seven
- 9:01Speaker 1: hundred if I remember right, he made seven hundred and
- 9:07Speaker 1: would had a fork out seven grand if you didn't quit.
- 9:09Speaker 1: It's better than swimming a mile in a pool making seven.
- 9:14Speaker 1: Here's your thing. You're not getting anything out of winning, true?
- 9:18Speaker 1: Oh you're getting is that It's like all you know
- 9:22Speaker 1: is that somewhere someone swimming in the pool while mild
- 9:25Speaker 1: Man's walking around the fat wallet. Maybe you can like
- 9:28Speaker 1: stand on the edge of the pool and make sure
- 9:30Speaker 1: he doesn't like touch the edge or something. You know,
- 9:32Speaker 1: you could heckle him if you go a dred percent
- 9:35Speaker 1: Zin does that count as queen chewing tobacco? I would
- 9:40Speaker 1: just count it as nicotine, you know, is what I
- 9:44Speaker 1: am addicted to. So you're trying to get off a
- 9:47Speaker 1: nicotine altogether. Yeah, because you switched to dip alternative. Now
- 9:51Speaker 1: you're doing the next thing, right, and I've I've tried
- 9:54Speaker 1: tried quentin. I tried quitting about every other week probably. Well,
- 10:00Speaker 1: you know, um, I like to follow the firm market, dude.
- 10:05Speaker 1: This is like New Year's is. Because I was just
- 10:06Speaker 1: reading the firm market report for coming up and uh,
- 10:11Speaker 1: like the whole Russia things got everything whacked out in
- 10:15Speaker 1: various ways. Uh, they buy a lot of her um traditionally,
- 10:21Speaker 1: like a lot like us fur will go to Russia.
- 10:23Speaker 1: The other thing is there's a sable market, so like
- 10:26Speaker 1: there's a lot of sable, they get trapped sable. Our
- 10:30Speaker 1: European like Eurasian Martin, that's what they call sables. And
- 10:34Speaker 1: when Martin, when American Martin are sold, they're sold as sable,
- 10:38Speaker 1: so like in the old days you get like a
- 10:39Speaker 1: sable brush that was like the hair in the brush,
- 10:41Speaker 1: or like a sables scarf. Even American Martin I wind
- 10:47Speaker 1: up being used as sable. So the Russians eyes buy
- 10:51Speaker 1: a shipload of her and that's all screwed up. Uh. Oh,
- 10:55Speaker 1: you know that the Russians. The Rooski's reached out trying
- 11:01Speaker 1: to the Rooski reached out trying to do a Roosky
- 11:04Speaker 1: version of one of our books. Pretty it felt pretty
- 11:06Speaker 1: good to make a political statement because especially because it
- 11:08Speaker 1: only cost five Yeah. I was like, I'm reading this thing,
- 11:12Speaker 1: and do you remember what book it was? It was
- 11:14Speaker 1: the Survival book, okay, the will Yeah, the Wilderness Skills Book,
- 11:17Speaker 1: which they may need over there, I know. So like
- 11:20Speaker 1: this Russian publisher wanted to buy our will buy, then
- 11:23Speaker 1: by the Russian rights to do a translation of the
- 11:26Speaker 1: Wilderness Skills Book, and then the whole time I'm like,
- 11:28Speaker 1: oh man, this is like, you know, it's gonna be
- 11:32Speaker 1: like you can't do it. You know, you can't do
- 11:34Speaker 1: it because all the boycott stuff. But man, but I
- 11:36Speaker 1: got the end. It was only five bucks, so they'll
- 11:38Speaker 1: be like hell no. I was like, oh good, not
- 11:46Speaker 1: not costing me anything to be uh. So here's an
- 11:54Speaker 1: interesting thing, man um beavers. So in the beaver market,
- 12:00Speaker 1: beavers are sold as like most beavers go into that
- 12:03Speaker 1: what's called the hatter market. So if you go back
- 12:07Speaker 1: to the old days, you go back to the mountain
- 12:08Speaker 1: man era. Um, all those beavers that were trapped by
- 12:12Speaker 1: all those mountain man Rocky mountain beaver trappers and others
- 12:15Speaker 1: were all used to make hats. They shred the whole
- 12:18Speaker 1: thing and make wolf felt. Uh so Abe Lincoln like
- 12:24Speaker 1: the top hat and all that, right, beaver wolf felt
- 12:27Speaker 1: top has their water resistant warm very fashionable. Uh well,
- 12:30Speaker 1: he might have been the silk hat era, because when
- 12:34Speaker 1: when they started making hat some silk, it killed the
- 12:38Speaker 1: old beaver market. But today everything but the best. So
- 12:42Speaker 1: like you might have a lot of beavers that come
- 12:44Speaker 1: out of the Upper Great Lakes, extreme northern Midwest, like
- 12:49Speaker 1: very dark, heavy beavers like those go to certain uses.
- 12:53Speaker 1: Most of all the beavers, most other beavers from the south,
- 12:56Speaker 1: all the beavers in the West going to the hatter market.
- 13:00Speaker 1: They're going to making statsuns. This this bobcat guy, Mercer Long,
- 13:06Speaker 1: he's gonna be coming on the podcast. He used to
- 13:08Speaker 1: be a he still is a fur trapper. But he
- 13:11Speaker 1: also when researchers are trying to do catch bobcats, the
- 13:14Speaker 1: collar him. He's the go to you guy when you
- 13:17Speaker 1: want to put a collar on a bobcat. He's like
- 13:19Speaker 1: Joe Bobcat. He sent me a text. Let me let
- 13:24Speaker 1: me tell you another. Let me let me give you another.
- 13:26Speaker 1: He has some interesting insights. He said this one day.
- 13:31Speaker 1: So here's a here's him. Why does it bother me
- 13:34Speaker 1: so much? These guys with this Why does it bother
- 13:38Speaker 1: me so much? These guys with the seventy tho dollar
- 13:41Speaker 1: land cruisers and jeeps with all the stupid ship bolted
- 13:44Speaker 1: to the outside of it, water jugs, gasoline traction boards
- 13:48Speaker 1: and handyman jack's. Can you imagine actually spending any time
- 13:52Speaker 1: on dirt roads and one of those things all that
- 13:54Speaker 1: crap it's bolt of them things just rattle off or
- 13:57Speaker 1: the racks are just fall to pieces. Eventually, there isn't
- 14:00Speaker 1: a single lift point on one of those vehicles that
- 14:02Speaker 1: you could even use the high lift jack on. And
- 14:05Speaker 1: then you see them out there when you're trapping on
- 14:08Speaker 1: their big adventure, a dozen of them making a big
- 14:10Speaker 1: deal about driving down a trail that you check traps
- 14:12Speaker 1: on every single day most of the time. You'd be
- 14:14Speaker 1: hard pressed to find a half bottle of water in
- 14:16Speaker 1: your vehicle and your spare tire has been flattened the
- 14:19Speaker 1: bed for a week and a half. No, this guy
- 14:22Speaker 1: is really your buddy. This guy knows how to get
- 14:25Speaker 1: to your heart. Here's a taxi to sent me. Do
- 14:31Speaker 1: you suppose the liberal save all the animals? Hollywood? Folks
- 14:36Speaker 1: involved with the TV show Yellowstone realize they are almost
- 14:40Speaker 1: single handedly pushing the beaver market orders for forty to
- 14:44Speaker 1: fifty thousand skins to supply the hatter industry. You suppose
- 14:49Speaker 1: they even know that those Western hats are made with
- 14:51Speaker 1: beaver felt. Probably not a lot of people do. But
- 14:56Speaker 1: also the guy that runs Yellowstone, Taylor Shardan's a pretty
- 14:59Speaker 1: centrist dude. He's not he's a beaver trapper. He's a
- 15:02Speaker 1: face of friend of the beaver trappers. I keep we
- 15:07Speaker 1: keep getting pitched a podcast guests from various angles, who's
- 15:10Speaker 1: it sounds like an anti beaver trapper to get them on?
- 15:14Speaker 1: They wrote beaver Land. I just got pitched them again.
- 15:17Speaker 1: Today they have startling startling findings about the secretive contemporary
- 15:23Speaker 1: fur trade. Oh so it's based on It's not like
- 15:28Speaker 1: environmental No, it's about like, hey, beavers make damns. You know.
- 15:33Speaker 1: It's like news alert and then um, you don't say,
- 15:37Speaker 1: and then uh and then um it's it has startling
- 15:40Speaker 1: discoveries about the contemporary fur trade. I don't maybe we
- 15:42Speaker 1: should have that person. Definitely that sounds interesting. Uh oh,
- 15:47Speaker 1: another heads up for we get we got caught things
- 15:49Speaker 1: to talk about here's in our heads up, you know,
- 15:50Speaker 1: like um speaking of like you know, the liberal Hollywood types.
- 15:57Speaker 1: You know how all everything in Disney is like like
- 16:02Speaker 1: how it's just like NonStop like anti hunting stuff, like
- 16:05Speaker 1: if you watch it's not Disney, but like Wild Crats
- 16:07Speaker 1: for instance, Like the bad guy is a wild game
- 16:09Speaker 1: chef in Wild Crats. You watch that show? You kids?
- 16:13Speaker 1: Ever watch that show? And like the these two brothers
- 16:17Speaker 1: and I used to have an actual shoulder. I mean,
- 16:18Speaker 1: I don't know if they got too old and they
- 16:20Speaker 1: started they turned them into carton much younger cartoon people.
- 16:23Speaker 1: But yeah, the hunters are always the bad guys, like
- 16:25Speaker 1: when the animals are the characters, like the buffoon hunters, Like, yeah,
- 16:29Speaker 1: there's a wild game chef. There's three, there's one. One
- 16:33Speaker 1: of the bad guys is kind of like a very
- 16:36Speaker 1: he's like an urban dweller, very fussy and and like
- 16:45Speaker 1: how do I put it? How do I put it?
- 16:52Speaker 1: Very effeminate, fussy urban knight who kind of hates animals.
- 16:59Speaker 1: One of the bad ad guys is no joke, a
- 17:02Speaker 1: chef who wants to like eat the last of things. Yeah,
- 17:10Speaker 1: and then you know every other thing like if you
- 17:12Speaker 1: watch a movie and there's a couple and there's a
- 17:14Speaker 1: hunter in it. It's like, what is he? He's from
- 17:17Speaker 1: the South, He's from the American South. He's careless and
- 17:22Speaker 1: and like ruthless I have. This is a hot tip
- 17:26Speaker 1: for parents with kids. Adventure Time. That's me and my
- 17:29Speaker 1: kids show. I love it, ten fifteen minute episodes. We
- 17:33Speaker 1: watched them that night before bed. All their houses taxidermy.
- 17:37Speaker 1: They sleep under animal skins. Everything in their house is
- 17:41Speaker 1: draped and animal hides. What's this one called adventure Time?
- 17:45Speaker 1: It's a dystopian no it's like a utopian post apocalyptic
- 17:48Speaker 1: world where like you gather that it's like also kind
- 17:51Speaker 1: of fantasy in medieval it's like a whole it's it's cool.
- 17:53Speaker 1: It's a cool. Humans are all gone except for one kid.
- 17:56Speaker 1: In Animate objects have become animate and now and then
- 18:00Speaker 1: you see like an ice burgl wash up on the
- 18:03Speaker 1: beach and it's full of humans wearing business suits with
- 18:06Speaker 1: pustules all over their face. Like humans are gone, and
- 18:10Speaker 1: it's a kid and his dog and they have a
- 18:12Speaker 1: lot of adventures and sometimes like I was watching one
- 18:15Speaker 1: the other day and it just ends inexplicably. They just
- 18:17Speaker 1: come in and he's holding like a big dead animal
- 18:20Speaker 1: and drops it on the floor and his buddy's got
- 18:22Speaker 1: an arrow sticking out of his head um, and yeah,
- 18:26Speaker 1: they sleep under his bed. Is all bear hides and rugs.
- 18:31Speaker 1: Where can you watch it? Is it like a YouTube?
- 18:34Speaker 1: It was on it was on cartoon Network, but you
- 18:35Speaker 1: can watch it. It's on HBO Max and like any
- 18:38Speaker 1: sort of cartoon network. We have the kind of TV
- 18:40Speaker 1: you talk into and um my kids just talking to
- 18:43Speaker 1: it in one of those smart ones that they have now.
- 18:46Speaker 1: They just talk into it and it plays it. But
- 18:48Speaker 1: I don't understand where it's coming from. That's a hot
- 18:54Speaker 1: to adventure time when when Oscar can start watching. It
- 19:00Speaker 1: has a lot of talking animals. But I just I
- 19:02Speaker 1: watch it for the taxidermy. I watched it for the
- 19:05Speaker 1: I watch it for the tan hides, the beds made
- 19:08Speaker 1: of nothing, but they just sleep under rugs. People like
- 19:14Speaker 1: the ft up Bold tax Darmy calendar. Good. I mean
- 19:19Speaker 1: they're never going to like as much as the deer
- 19:22Speaker 1: stands calendar. But yeah, good, we well speaking to another good. Yeah,
- 19:30Speaker 1: I got a couple of ethics, a couple of ethics
- 19:32Speaker 1: questions we gotta get into well, yeah, if you don't
- 19:35Speaker 1: have a calendar for this year yet, would be ethical
- 19:38Speaker 1: to buy one. Yeah, there's like just a few left, right,
- 19:42Speaker 1: I think. Yeah. I think I saw an email that
- 19:45Speaker 1: it was like thousand I've already been shipped out. Oh
- 19:48Speaker 1: so they sold a good pile. Yeah, oh sweet man.
- 19:51Speaker 1: And then and then there was some of the promo,
- 19:53Speaker 1: like like for certain orders. I think in the last
- 19:55Speaker 1: like last year when they were getting rid of them,
- 19:58Speaker 1: it was if you make any order, you could any
- 20:02Speaker 1: you get a free calendar with any order. So people
- 20:04Speaker 1: would order a calendar, right, because then you're buying like
- 20:07Speaker 1: a cheap item, so you're paying like whatever, fourteen bucks,
- 20:13Speaker 1: and then your free item is a calendar. Yeah. So
- 20:16Speaker 1: it's basically like two for one calendars and a lot
- 20:17Speaker 1: of calendars sold like that. But yeah, it's not too late. You.
- 20:20Speaker 1: I hope you can still go get him. We've talked
- 20:22Speaker 1: about this, man. It comes up all the time. Here's
- 20:24Speaker 1: a guy, here, here's a guy writes in states. As
- 20:29Speaker 1: previously discussed on the podcast, hunters are placed in moral
- 20:32Speaker 1: and legal dilemmas often I'm quoting. On the opening day
- 20:36Speaker 1: of rifle season, I experienced quite the predicament, Still quoting
- 20:43Speaker 1: Honey public Land, I heard someone shooting a small caliber
- 20:45Speaker 1: semi automatic firearm, sending out multiple shots. After about ten
- 20:50Speaker 1: to fifteen minutes, I hear an animal head in my direction.
- 20:52Speaker 1: I look up to see a small buck, very wounded,
- 20:55Speaker 1: limping into the area. Upon looking at him through my scope,
- 20:59Speaker 1: I can see that he has been shot through the
- 21:00Speaker 1: front leg at the joint. Upon seeing this, decided to
- 21:04Speaker 1: do the morally correct thing and dispatch the deer. As
- 21:07Speaker 1: I checked out the deer, I began to see he
- 21:08Speaker 1: was shot multiple times, twice in the neck, once through
- 21:12Speaker 1: the front leg, and once in the ham. I proceeded
- 21:16Speaker 1: away over an hour and hopes that someone would show
- 21:18Speaker 1: up looking for the deer they had wounded. But they
- 21:20Speaker 1: put about as much time in finding the wounded animal
- 21:23Speaker 1: as they did at the gun range. I know taking
- 21:27Speaker 1: a wounded animal has been discussed on the podcast before,
- 21:30Speaker 1: but how would you have played this one? Use your
- 21:33Speaker 1: only rifle buck tag on a small buck that has
- 21:35Speaker 1: been shot up, harvest the animal and not tag him
- 21:40Speaker 1: let him walk. I respect the opinions from the meat eater,
- 21:44Speaker 1: as y'all do the nice nice He ends with some
- 21:48Speaker 1: nice things um, what would you have done? I want
- 21:53Speaker 1: to first lay out like what you should, what you
- 21:55Speaker 1: what you need legally? This is what This is why
- 21:59Speaker 1: I saw about ethics because I've been in a situation.
- 22:01Speaker 1: I've been in a station situation two times more than that. Well,
- 22:07Speaker 1: I was in a situation yesterday in a weird way
- 22:11Speaker 1: because I'm driving down the road. We're going out set
- 22:13Speaker 1: some Martin sets, and there's a deer all busted up
- 22:18Speaker 1: on the side of the road, laying there looking around
- 22:20Speaker 1: cars whizzing by. You can see where to kind of
- 22:24Speaker 1: dragged itself off into the snow, And like we thought
- 22:27Speaker 1: about alwaysould probably shoot deer that you're actually not supposed
- 22:30Speaker 1: to do that, right, that's breaking the law. It's breaking
- 22:33Speaker 1: a law to shoot the deer. But twice I have
- 22:36Speaker 1: killed severely messed up deer that I did not tag.
- 22:42Speaker 1: One time, the first time I did it, We're camping
- 22:45Speaker 1: and I took a backstrap off it, and then I
- 22:48Speaker 1: felt like kind of bad about that. You stepped across
- 22:52Speaker 1: the line at that. Well, it was listen, it was
- 22:55Speaker 1: a deer that got hit in the lower back ham.
- 22:59Speaker 1: It was just pack full of dirt. The leg was
- 23:02Speaker 1: just dragon. Oh just a mess, and I was like,
- 23:08Speaker 1: I'm not gonna it's like a total mess. It was
- 23:11Speaker 1: obviously a hunting related it was hunting season. You could
- 23:13Speaker 1: tell it had been shot. Um I shot it, and
- 23:18Speaker 1: I'm like, man, I don't want to, like, I don't know.
- 23:20Speaker 1: And that night we ate a backstrap, which was wrong,
- 23:22Speaker 1: but that was probably more I don't know. I don't
- 23:25Speaker 1: want that. One's moral legally wrong for sure. The other
- 23:28Speaker 1: time I killed one a little fun. They had gotten
- 23:30Speaker 1: out onto an island in a river and it had
- 23:32Speaker 1: been hamstrung by coyotes. It was just a total mess
- 23:34Speaker 1: and dieing anyways, and I shot it. Didn't touch it.
- 23:38Speaker 1: Both times that was illegal because you didn't use your tag,
- 23:42Speaker 1: didn't use a tag, and didn't contact game warden. So
- 23:45Speaker 1: I'll do mine that you guys can do years. I'll
- 23:46Speaker 1: do mine for what I think this individual, what I
- 23:49Speaker 1: would have done in this individual shoes, if I was
- 23:51Speaker 1: being my best person. Yeah, if you're being any best person,
- 23:55Speaker 1: you wouldn't have messed with it. If you didn't want it,
- 23:58Speaker 1: your second best person, you just shot it. Realized it
- 24:01Speaker 1: was full of holes, realize that no one came and
- 24:04Speaker 1: looked for it, and call a game ward and be like,
- 24:07Speaker 1: I don't I saw a deer coming, I knew it
- 24:09Speaker 1: was shot, I shot it. I didn't realize it was
- 24:11Speaker 1: this shot. And where the hell's the guy that shot it?
- 24:14Speaker 1: I think if you, if you really laid it out
- 24:18Speaker 1: and the in the game, Warden was quite convinced you're
- 24:22Speaker 1: telling the truth, there's a good chance and he probably
- 24:25Speaker 1: he probably would have done some asking around about who
- 24:27Speaker 1: had been plugging away at it and probably would not
- 24:30Speaker 1: have forced you to take it. If you're like like,
- 24:33Speaker 1: I don't know, here it comes. It's got four brand
- 24:35Speaker 1: new holes in it. I don't want it, but who
- 24:40Speaker 1: where is he? Yeah? I think if I would, I'd
- 24:45Speaker 1: shoot the deer, go up to it and realize how
- 24:50Speaker 1: shot up it was. If you, if I could get
- 24:52Speaker 1: a bunch of meat off, I'd probably just take the deer.
- 24:54Speaker 1: But if it was just demolished, what if it was
- 24:58Speaker 1: your only buck tag? Yeah, you had like another week
- 25:02Speaker 1: to hunt chester. I I mean, I'd love to shoot
- 25:08Speaker 1: a bigger buck, but it's just like meat. At least
- 25:11Speaker 1: at this point in my life, the meat is more
- 25:13Speaker 1: important than that. But in this case, you're not gonna
- 25:17Speaker 1: like the meat is gonna be all right shot up,
- 25:20Speaker 1: And if it was all shot up, I'd do exactly
- 25:22Speaker 1: what you guys are saying and called the called the
- 25:24Speaker 1: game warden. I've tagged two shot up animals are tagged
- 25:28Speaker 1: A shot up turkey with Yanni and we jumped it
- 25:32Speaker 1: out of brush pole and that couldn't fly and I
- 25:34Speaker 1: shot it tagged um full story. I think we're it
- 25:38Speaker 1: was like the last couple of minutes of our hunt. Uh.
- 25:41Speaker 1: And then I shot a cous deer on the show
- 25:43Speaker 1: one time they've been shot through the foot. She got
- 25:46Speaker 1: some yield off of that, though it's not wrong shot.
- 25:49Speaker 1: What's interesting is, uh, after I killed it, we're caught
- 25:54Speaker 1: it up and here comes the guy. We got to
- 25:56Speaker 1: hit it a couple of days before in the foot
- 25:57Speaker 1: and still all the mountains looking for it. M hm.
- 26:02Speaker 1: In Arizona wasn't on that one. Do you give it
- 26:04Speaker 1: to him? No? He was totally cool about it, and
- 26:05Speaker 1: he didn't want, He just wanted. He was still up
- 26:07Speaker 1: looking for You want to know what happened? He was
- 26:09Speaker 1: happy to ship. I just like, is it like the
- 26:15Speaker 1: morally correct thing to do? Like? Are you morally obligated? Like?
- 26:19Speaker 1: I don't know if that's would now now knowing? Would
- 26:22Speaker 1: I now know? I would just if I knew something
- 26:25Speaker 1: was messed up, I'd be like, let's they tell you
- 26:27Speaker 1: not the mess that I'm not gonna miss. You know,
- 26:32Speaker 1: I don't think you're morally obligated to do anything. The
- 26:36Speaker 1: one area I think that, the one area where I
- 26:38Speaker 1: think that I used to practice civil disobedience is picking
- 26:41Speaker 1: up road kill stuff back when it was illegal. Yeah,
- 26:45Speaker 1: and mostly now it's like more every year, like more
- 26:47Speaker 1: and more states make illegal. When it was illegal to
- 26:50Speaker 1: pick up road kill, I would picked up road kill.
- 26:52Speaker 1: I wouldn't even be discreet about it. And I was
- 26:54Speaker 1: looking forward to going down to court and being like, yes,
- 26:57Speaker 1: your honor, there was a deer dead on the side
- 26:59Speaker 1: of the road that was gonna rob on the side
- 27:01Speaker 1: of the road, and I ate it. Guilty is charged?
- 27:05Speaker 1: Have you shot? And to see what actually happens to you?
- 27:07Speaker 1: Have you done the putting a wounded animal out and
- 27:12Speaker 1: tagged or untagged? Or one time going up one thirty
- 27:14Speaker 1: one one that was hit by a car. Yeah, yeah,
- 27:19Speaker 1: I was a young hotshot ELK. I had always had
- 27:21Speaker 1: a pistol in my car and just needed a reason
- 27:24Speaker 1: to just charged that side of a gun, and there
- 27:26Speaker 1: it was. I knew, I knew it was a reason
- 27:27Speaker 1: carrying out for ten years. Um, I think that that's
- 27:32Speaker 1: been that was the only time. Yeah, I don't. I
- 27:34Speaker 1: don't know that I'm gonna burn my tag in that situation.
- 27:36Speaker 1: That's no, I'm not. I mean, you can, but it's
- 27:40Speaker 1: not like a thing. I don't feel like I have
- 27:42Speaker 1: to do it for this reason that like this animal
- 27:44Speaker 1: has to be put out of its misery. Um, I
- 27:47Speaker 1: don't know. For some reason, the older I get, I
- 27:49Speaker 1: don't believe in that quite as much anymore as I
- 27:52Speaker 1: used to. I think those animals are a lot tougher
- 27:54Speaker 1: than than than we think they are. And I think
- 27:57Speaker 1: we're there's a little bit of anthropop or snation that
- 28:00Speaker 1: goes on when we when we think, oh, let's put
- 28:02Speaker 1: it out of its misery. You don't know how well
- 28:05Speaker 1: that dear yesterday laying outside of the road, dude was
- 28:07Speaker 1: not getting any better. No, it's not. I'm not saying
- 28:10Speaker 1: it's gonna get any better. It's gonna we'll see here,
- 28:12Speaker 1: it's gonna get eaten by something. But here's the art.
- 28:15Speaker 1: Here's another wrinkle in this to consider. These are huge.
- 28:18Speaker 1: He'sawing about human caused, which I view like human part
- 28:24Speaker 1: of nature. I know. No, that's good point, that's good point.
- 28:28Speaker 1: But I mean it's the morally correct thing because that's
- 28:32Speaker 1: the one you saw. Like if you're out there hunting
- 28:34Speaker 1: in firearms season in Wisconsin, there is a she it
- 28:38Speaker 1: load of bounded deer running around in the woods. You
- 28:41Speaker 1: know what I mean. But just because it's the one
- 28:43Speaker 1: you saw it, you know what I mean, it's my
- 28:50Speaker 1: it's my belief that, like we talked about this a
- 28:54Speaker 1: long time yesterday I was talking without some folks. It's
- 28:56Speaker 1: my belief that the wound loss on archery elk is
- 29:01Speaker 1: one to one. Everyone I know that archery hunts has
- 29:05Speaker 1: a story. Man, it's one to one I think for
- 29:07Speaker 1: every elk to dies and elkots wounded. So if you
- 29:10Speaker 1: imagine all those like you know, and so many of
- 29:13Speaker 1: those recover, it's kind of like, yeah, you see something
- 29:17Speaker 1: coming along, you don't know what it's gonna happen to it.
- 29:21Speaker 1: Here's a good one. I recently harvested a duck that
- 29:24Speaker 1: caused me some confusion. Yesterday I was out jumped shooting
- 29:27Speaker 1: some local creeks. This is really interesting. I had bag
- 29:31Speaker 1: three green heads. That's good, that's a good little jump shoot.
- 29:36Speaker 1: I had bag three green heads. And because the limit
- 29:38Speaker 1: is four mallards here in Skinny Chester, I could shoot
- 29:43Speaker 1: one more. As I walked along, a flock of three
- 29:46Speaker 1: erupted from the bank below me. I picked out the
- 29:48Speaker 1: one bird of the green head, and a white collar
- 29:51Speaker 1: pulled up and crunched it. Hadn't heard that before. Crunched
- 29:54Speaker 1: it means you got it. Yeah. I had never heard
- 30:00Speaker 1: anybody used crunched in the place of got it, shot it,
- 30:06Speaker 1: folded it, folded it ever ever heard anybody's little aggressive
- 30:11Speaker 1: Just this is the first time right now, just imagining
- 30:14Speaker 1: bones shattering, which I don't think is the image that
- 30:17Speaker 1: you want. Well, I think a lot. I did some
- 30:18Speaker 1: waterfowl hunting last week, and sometimes when you do get
- 30:21Speaker 1: like a really good shot on one and they crumpled it,
- 30:25Speaker 1: they crumpled, which I could see. I could see that
- 30:28Speaker 1: that could you know you could flip that to crunch
- 30:31Speaker 1: pretty easy, kind of look like they get pillowed pillowed.
- 30:38Speaker 1: And when I was in college, I had to do
- 30:40Speaker 1: this thing. Did I tell you about this story? You'll
- 30:43Speaker 1: remember if I told you this, I found an academic
- 30:46Speaker 1: paper because you're you know, you're usually here, right. I
- 30:50Speaker 1: found an academic paper where they took a room full
- 30:53Speaker 1: of women from a college who all knew each other, okay,
- 30:57Speaker 1: and they had like fifteen minutes to think of all
- 31:00Speaker 1: the words they could think of for male genitalia. I
- 31:04Speaker 1: don't remember that. And then they took the same number
- 31:07Speaker 1: I've heard it at least ten times you've heard us
- 31:11Speaker 1: for they Hey, look a hunter sitting over there, like
- 31:16Speaker 1: he wants to hear what they called. So, and they
- 31:19Speaker 1: took the same number of guys that they got, found
- 31:22Speaker 1: guys that all knew each other, and put them. It
- 31:25Speaker 1: was a linguist that did the research. So the women
- 31:28Speaker 1: all generated for fifteen minutes. Is free form generated his
- 31:31Speaker 1: main names they could think of for male genitalia. Then
- 31:33Speaker 1: you had a group of guys and they free form
- 31:37Speaker 1: generated as many names for male genitialia as they could
- 31:40Speaker 1: think of. And a stark difference in the stock like
- 31:45Speaker 1: a stark difference in the lists. The males had forty
- 31:48Speaker 1: figures like the commissioner, the Governor's terrible cojack like authority figures.
- 31:58Speaker 1: So the authority figures were coming from the men I'm
- 32:01Speaker 1: guessing yeah, yeah, for sure. And the female is just
- 32:04Speaker 1: like a wildly different list, you know, like like just
- 32:08Speaker 1: like very different point being. I think it'd be like,
- 32:11Speaker 1: thinking about this crunched, crunched, it would be interested to
- 32:14Speaker 1: go around the country just like for five minutes, give me,
- 32:20Speaker 1: you'd be like harvested, took right, somebould be like whacked
- 32:26Speaker 1: crunch goods. Just have a map and what are the
- 32:33Speaker 1: kind of terms? Need one for the gen z s? Yeah,
- 32:37Speaker 1: so the interesting research. So back to our duck hunter.
- 32:43Speaker 1: I picked out the one bird of the green head
- 32:44Speaker 1: and white collar, pulled up and crunched it. Something seemed
- 32:50Speaker 1: off about the bird. I figured it was just a
- 32:53Speaker 1: juvenile drake, seeing as I had harvested two of those
- 32:57Speaker 1: already that day Harvard. When I stripped down waited across
- 33:00Speaker 1: the creek, I was just saying, it's got some waiters.
- 33:04Speaker 1: When I stripped down and waited across the creek, I
- 33:06Speaker 1: found what was clearly a domestic duck. I have no
- 33:11Speaker 1: ethical dilemma about shooting a domestic duck. I was in
- 33:14Speaker 1: the heart of public land and escape Domestic breeds can
- 33:16Speaker 1: be quite damaging to the genetics of our wild mallards.
- 33:19Speaker 1: What I struggled with was whether or not it should
- 33:22Speaker 1: count towards my limit of mallards or my limit of
- 33:25Speaker 1: ducks at all. I understand that it's a descendant of
- 33:29Speaker 1: a mallard, but a feral dog is a descendant of
- 33:31Speaker 1: a wolf. Should you then be required to put your
- 33:33Speaker 1: wolf permit on a feral dog? If you shot one?
- 33:37Speaker 1: Last time I shot one, I didn't or say I
- 33:40Speaker 1: had my own domestic ducks. If I already shoot a
- 33:44Speaker 1: limit of wild ducks, would that prevent me from being
- 33:45Speaker 1: able to butcher my own that day? He's you know,
- 33:48Speaker 1: he's making a point, right. I don't think he's He's right.
- 33:51Speaker 1: He's like asking, what are those hypothetical theoreticals? I don't know. Yeah,
- 33:55Speaker 1: he's just laying out an extreme possibility. I think. Um.
- 33:58Speaker 1: I I had a similar experience last year. My boy
- 34:04Speaker 1: got a duck, UM, a strange duck, and we you
- 34:10Speaker 1: speculated about what it was and more I did online research.
- 34:13Speaker 1: I had found a it was a Mallard Muscovie cross,
- 34:17Speaker 1: which even has a name. So then you're like, we
- 34:21Speaker 1: counted it towards the limit. I would think that in
- 34:24Speaker 1: this case, this individual, I would think that you might
- 34:27Speaker 1: get cited, but when you went to court, you're not
- 34:31Speaker 1: gonna get in trouble. You'd have to how do you
- 34:36Speaker 1: prove it's a domestic duck? Though, if if you cared
- 34:39Speaker 1: that much you get it, you'd get it tested. It says,
- 34:41Speaker 1: couldn't it be that that duck is just hatched out
- 34:45Speaker 1: from a hand that made it, a wild hand that
- 34:48Speaker 1: made it with ye you know, yeah, but you see
- 34:53Speaker 1: those crazy like ponds full of those crazy like not
- 34:56Speaker 1: quite mallards all the time. I mean it's one duck, Like,
- 35:00Speaker 1: why not just call it a day, right? Because he's
- 35:02Speaker 1: a curious person. I look at this all this job,
- 35:04Speaker 1: look at all of his like another one credentials, He
- 35:07Speaker 1: does have some credentials. Another one of those things. Another
- 35:10Speaker 1: one of those situations though, where it's just like if
- 35:12Speaker 1: you really wanted to keep hunting, you just could call
- 35:15Speaker 1: up your authorities and kind of see what they think.
- 35:18Speaker 1: You know, yeah, I think they're gonna be. On the
- 35:21Speaker 1: other hand, what do you think you can't be called like,
- 35:23Speaker 1: you can't be every day calling you can't be every
- 35:25Speaker 1: day calling the game ward and weird stuff to happen to.
- 35:28Speaker 1: But that does this stuff doesn't happen. That's what happened now.
- 35:32Speaker 1: But how often does this stuff? But you know I don't.
- 35:37Speaker 1: I feel like my local game Ward likes getting a
- 35:40Speaker 1: phone call from an inquisitive n Yeah, and I apologize
- 35:44Speaker 1: him every time I do. He looks at that phone.
- 35:45Speaker 1: He's like, God, damn, it's every time I do it.
- 35:47Speaker 1: I'm like, hey, man, I hate to buggy this kind
- 35:49Speaker 1: of stuff. Man, but like, what if it's their job? Yeah, No,
- 35:54Speaker 1: he likes because he's like an intellectual. Um, I would
- 35:59Speaker 1: have have hunting bonus nut. Here's what I would have done.
- 36:02Speaker 1: I'm telling this is why my better self would have
- 36:05Speaker 1: would have just my better self would have I'm bagged out. Uh,
- 36:12Speaker 1: I'm done hunting. But in the back of my mind
- 36:14Speaker 1: when I see a game Ward and I'm gonna say
- 36:16Speaker 1: to that game Ward, hey I got one for you,
- 36:18Speaker 1: and you're like, I'm not going to call him this
- 36:20Speaker 1: time and be like, hey, I got one for you.
- 36:22Speaker 1: Here's the thing that had to me. What would have
- 36:23Speaker 1: been your attitude to that. I wouldn't have shot another one,
- 36:27Speaker 1: planning and arguing my way out of it. M He'd like, well,
- 36:32Speaker 1: you'd be like you get caught with me. Duch's like, well,
- 36:33Speaker 1: you'll notice it seems like that you want to clarify
- 36:40Speaker 1: first and then figure out right, yeah, the third time,
- 36:47Speaker 1: the third time you had three regular mallards and one,
- 36:51Speaker 1: uh bonus domestic mallard. He might start asking questions carry
- 36:57Speaker 1: a little white out worth he or somebody just kind
- 36:59Speaker 1: of make him a little different. Here's one. This is
- 37:10Speaker 1: an ethical this is a strategy. We've talked about this too.
- 37:18Speaker 1: I know, okay, the subject line of the question is
- 37:21Speaker 1: um two pee or not to pee? Is that handler
- 37:25Speaker 1: Macbeth Hamlet Hamlet to pee or not to pee in
- 37:31Speaker 1: a tree stand? I know the subject line of this
- 37:33Speaker 1: email is a little weird, but it gets right to
- 37:35Speaker 1: my question. I hope it will help settle the years
- 37:37Speaker 1: long debate within the group I deer hunt with in Minnesota.
- 37:42Speaker 1: When you're on stand for hours on end, should you
- 37:44Speaker 1: refrain from peeing in the woods New York stand or
- 37:48Speaker 1: doesn't really matter? He points out that he's uh searching
- 37:54Speaker 1: past articles on our website that's not on our website,
- 37:58Speaker 1: hasn't found anything. Point that out. We should point that
- 38:02Speaker 1: out the spencer. Growing up, honey, my dad taught me
- 38:06Speaker 1: to try to minimize your sent while hunting, and peeing
- 38:09Speaker 1: near where you're going to be hunting was a big
- 38:10Speaker 1: no no. I still follow this rule today, and I
- 38:13Speaker 1: have to go on stand, and and and if I
- 38:17Speaker 1: have to go a while on stand, I founded a
- 38:19Speaker 1: large Gatorade bottle of milky jos and he goes trucker
- 38:22Speaker 1: right into a Gatorade bottle. Other guys p at the
- 38:26Speaker 1: base of their elevated stands, please help me settle this debate. Oh,
- 38:31Speaker 1: come on. The best one, though, is that some guys
- 38:34Speaker 1: have a funnel with a garden hose that is then
- 38:38Speaker 1: dog into the ground at the base of the tree
- 38:41Speaker 1: to really hide that. Sorry, I've I've seen other elevated
- 38:46Speaker 1: stands that have a funnel in the corner of the
- 38:49Speaker 1: stand attached to a garden hose that runs down into
- 38:51Speaker 1: the ground. I checked that for fetishists, man, After all
- 38:56Speaker 1: that house business we got into, I would check that
- 38:59Speaker 1: holes for fetishist every time I went out there. Do
- 39:02Speaker 1: you know what I mean? Make sure it's not someone
- 39:05Speaker 1: hiding the leaves. I think I'm pretty sure I know
- 39:10Speaker 1: guys that p on their scrapes that they make You
- 39:16Speaker 1: got buck man, If you're dog during Yeah, that's where
- 39:19Speaker 1: the buck is gonna be. Yeah, I like, I want
- 39:24Speaker 1: to like this seems like this seems like a real
- 39:26Speaker 1: Mark Canyon question, because you know, I could picture him
- 39:29Speaker 1: getting into it. But I've I've heard, I've like that,
- 39:34Speaker 1: I've heard like piss his pissed for the most part,
- 39:36Speaker 1: And there's some subtle differences, but it's kind of a
- 39:38Speaker 1: volatile thing. And what you wind up with if you
- 39:40Speaker 1: wind up with like ammonia, right, And it doesn't really
- 39:43Speaker 1: matter when I I don't do a ton of when
- 39:46Speaker 1: I when I was young, I peed up when I
- 39:48Speaker 1: used to hunt out a tree stand for white tails
- 39:50Speaker 1: all the time. I didn't pee out of it strategically.
- 39:53Speaker 1: I peeed out of it out of expediency because we
- 39:55Speaker 1: didn't do anything properly according to like contemporary understanding of
- 40:01Speaker 1: like how to actually do everything you know, no, like
- 40:06Speaker 1: no send control or I just kind of the wheels
- 40:08Speaker 1: blowing the wrong way. That sucks. You just spent some
- 40:12Speaker 1: time in a tree stand in Wisconsin, pete a lot
- 40:15Speaker 1: right out of the tree and uh no no negative
- 40:21Speaker 1: and and and specifically paying attention to it, like within
- 40:25Speaker 1: an hour doze down wind and uh I feel like
- 40:29Speaker 1: I did a pretty good job. Like we had some company,
- 40:33Speaker 1: I think Cold Blue. Maybe somebody had shipped a big
- 40:36Speaker 1: box of stuff here. So I had some scent elimination
- 40:39Speaker 1: type stuff with me, and mostly I was spraying down
- 40:42Speaker 1: my uh first one or two uh sticks that I
- 40:46Speaker 1: was climbing on because a couple of years ago I
- 40:50Speaker 1: felt like, yeah, she came right as soon as her
- 40:53Speaker 1: nose got like parallel with that ladder. You know what
- 40:56Speaker 1: else happened this year? They did They actually went by
- 41:00Speaker 1: my stand, so they actually came from down one where
- 41:06Speaker 1: I didn't think they'd come, went by my stand, didn't
- 41:08Speaker 1: smell us. As Tyler and I up in the tree
- 41:10Speaker 1: together and I had a trail camera on a trail
- 41:15Speaker 1: the trail I was gonna try to kill these deer
- 41:17Speaker 1: on and I didn't like where it was, and so
- 41:20Speaker 1: I had moved it, yeah, with gloves on, moved it.
- 41:24Speaker 1: And they gotten that didn't like, got next to that
- 41:27Speaker 1: trail camera and just immediately like noses up in the
- 41:30Speaker 1: air looking around, we'll not seeing it. And I was like,
- 41:33Speaker 1: what the hell's at No? No, no smelled my And
- 41:36Speaker 1: that camera has been there for a year now and
- 41:40Speaker 1: I had just touched it and that tipped him off,
- 41:43Speaker 1: but he didn't no p away. I say, now are
- 41:49Speaker 1: you are you h dribbling her down the tree or
- 41:55Speaker 1: you you're shooting straight off because I'll dribble it down
- 41:58Speaker 1: the tree on purpose, so is not to make noise,
- 42:01Speaker 1: or I don't know why I shoot it. I shoot
- 42:05Speaker 1: it at the tree because you can make some noise
- 42:09Speaker 1: dry leaves. You know. I'm in the saddle these days,
- 42:12Speaker 1: so it's I usually just kind of turn ninding and
- 42:15Speaker 1: just go. I've never archa. It's more fun that way,
- 42:19Speaker 1: try and keep it out. I think I was thinking
- 42:21Speaker 1: about I don't know noise and like just I don't know,
- 42:24Speaker 1: just like kind of it seems like on the tree
- 42:27Speaker 1: you'd leave a much larger like you gotta climb down
- 42:30Speaker 1: that too, which, as we know an hour later, it's
- 42:34Speaker 1: just ammonia. But if you're a fetisher, you might be
- 42:36Speaker 1: into that. Well that's not where my mind was, and
- 42:41Speaker 1: I feel like, yeah, I don't feel like I don't
- 42:44Speaker 1: feel that I'm climbing back down through it. Well, I
- 42:48Speaker 1: don't know how many sides there a tree there are,
- 42:50Speaker 1: but there a lot of sides of a treat. Yeah
- 42:55Speaker 1: it is, but you're bear hugging the tree? Is you
- 42:58Speaker 1: climbed down? Um, we're in the tree a lot of
- 43:01Speaker 1: times with a cinematographer, and so that's hard being Yeah,
- 43:06Speaker 1: so it's it's just nicer to turn turn your back
- 43:08Speaker 1: to him and pee away from the tree. Yeah, that's
- 43:10Speaker 1: awkward situation can be. Yeah, they just looked around the
- 43:14Speaker 1: tree and you're like, I'm just dribbling down the tree
- 43:17Speaker 1: trunk here, bud, don't don't worry about me. Sorry about
- 43:20Speaker 1: your boot. Okay, that's that. Oh okay, yeah, hold on
- 43:26Speaker 1: before it before we cap that off, I just need
- 43:30Speaker 1: to add that, in fact, our beloved kin has in
- 43:35Speaker 1: fact written on this. It's a article called human or
- 43:41Speaker 1: dear urine. Doesn't make a difference. This guy must not
- 43:44Speaker 1: be very good internet searches. Maybe maybe he didn't find this.
- 43:48Speaker 1: It might not be it might not be cataloged properly.
- 43:50Speaker 1: So here's what Canyon had to say, Mark Kenyon. All
- 43:54Speaker 1: the research I've seen on this points to human yearine
- 43:57Speaker 1: being indistinguishable from deer or other critters after a very
- 44:01Speaker 1: short period. So I just let it fly anytime anywhere.
- 44:07Speaker 1: I'm not once seen a dear spook from it. I
- 44:10Speaker 1: also pee and mock scrapes and have seen bucks immediately
- 44:13Speaker 1: start using them with no negative response. That says a
- 44:19Speaker 1: lot Clay. I've had mixed success. Pianout of stands that
- 44:26Speaker 1: could be read at hundred ways. He peed down his bibbs.
- 44:37Speaker 1: I don't know, let's read down. Is that all I wrote?
- 44:42Speaker 1: End quote? I thought that's what you're getting at. That's
- 44:46Speaker 1: all you wrote that. No, I had this recently. Man
- 44:51Speaker 1: where I was there was I was interviewed for an
- 44:54Speaker 1: article recently, and it's like, I feel like if you're
- 44:56Speaker 1: talking to a journalist, you could say you could say
- 44:59Speaker 1: I'd don't eat dear meat when I'm vomiting, right, and
- 45:04Speaker 1: you'd read the next day be like, I don't need
- 45:06Speaker 1: dear meat, says Ronella. Uh, I've had mixed success. Pean
- 45:14Speaker 1: out of stands. I've seen dear spook and not spook.
- 45:19Speaker 1: Supposedly after some period of time, the yeurine is indistinguishable
- 45:23Speaker 1: interesting the same word choice as kenyan from other mammal urine. However,
- 45:29Speaker 1: I do like peeing in scrapes after a morning hunt.
- 45:33Speaker 1: But if you plan to have deer within bow range
- 45:36Speaker 1: of your tree peeing out of the tree, see This
- 45:40Speaker 1: is screwing it up because now we should have read
- 45:43Speaker 1: his first as a dissenting view and then given like overwhelming,
- 45:48Speaker 1: But now we're leaving him with a seated out. Yeah,
- 45:52Speaker 1: but he contradicts himself, like, how can pean in this
- 45:55Speaker 1: scrape be good? But pean out of a tree is bad?
- 45:59Speaker 1: I don't understand, and I wish we hadn't even asked Clay. However,
- 46:04Speaker 1: I do like to read again play says, However, I
- 46:07Speaker 1: do like peean and scrapes after a morning hunt. But
- 46:09Speaker 1: you've planned to have deer within bow range. If your tree,
- 46:12Speaker 1: peean out of the tree isn't the best option, in
- 46:14Speaker 1: my opinion, then why in a scrap? To what I'm saying,
- 46:19Speaker 1: I think they'd be even tougher to get him in
- 46:21Speaker 1: bo range. If they like get in the scrape, why
- 46:23Speaker 1: wouldn't they like it next your tree? If Clay thinks
- 46:26Speaker 1: the way he thinks, for really, you know you ought
- 46:27Speaker 1: to do He ought to make a big p funnel,
- 46:30Speaker 1: p way out one way, pe way out the other way,
- 46:36Speaker 1: and leave a pe gap right at your tree. Maybe
- 46:39Speaker 1: maybe it's just something eats channeling oak or something. Don't
- 46:42Speaker 1: eat any oak and you'll be good jud that Jerry
- 46:47Speaker 1: klower line. But uh, when he was a kid date
- 46:49Speaker 1: so much boiled oak or their socks wouldn't stay up. Okay,
- 46:57Speaker 1: here's what we want to do for here's what we
- 46:59Speaker 1: want to do to should takeet everybody rolling on. Um.
- 47:05Speaker 1: We want to talk about impactful things from two and
- 47:10Speaker 1: how they may have changed your your perspective, change your
- 47:17Speaker 1: life course. Right, And it's important because that's why you live.
- 47:23Speaker 1: You live an introspective life. You try to make sense
- 47:26Speaker 1: out of stuff. So that was what everybody was tasked
- 47:31Speaker 1: to do. Who wants to start? It's a big task. Yeah,
- 47:37Speaker 1: I still haven't thought of mine. It was I can't
- 47:40Speaker 1: think of one. I mean, I got a bunch, but
- 47:42Speaker 1: I can't think of which one is the most impactful thing.
- 47:45Speaker 1: I know what it should be, but I can't. It
- 47:47Speaker 1: wouldn't seem impactful to anybody. You should try us get
- 47:52Speaker 1: get the ball rolling because it's all the yeah, too
- 47:55Speaker 1: much context. No no, no, no no. I'd be like saying, um,
- 48:00Speaker 1: it would be like saying, uh, that was the most
- 48:02Speaker 1: important day of my life except when I got married
- 48:06Speaker 1: and had kids. You know what I mean? Where you
- 48:07Speaker 1: gotta right, you talk about a thing. Then people are like, yeah,
- 48:09Speaker 1: but what about whatever? Like when Chester goes he's gonna
- 48:13Speaker 1: do his big concert not having his kid, and then
- 48:15Speaker 1: people are gonna condemn him. I can tie him both
- 48:19Speaker 1: in there in a way. So who's going first? Brody?
- 48:23Speaker 1: Sure I can go first? Um, what happened to two
- 48:27Speaker 1: that you feel will change your course? Uh? Taking my
- 48:31Speaker 1: wife on her first successful hunt ever, she drew an.
- 48:37Speaker 1: We both threw antalope tags for out in the eastern
- 48:40Speaker 1: Montana and uh, playing a hunt for opening weekend of
- 48:45Speaker 1: antelope rifle season. Um, she'd been she's been hunting a
- 48:50Speaker 1: couple of times at four honest, almost put her on
- 48:52Speaker 1: a turkey a couple of years ago. But um, she
- 48:54Speaker 1: didn't really show any interest in hunting until we moved
- 48:57Speaker 1: to Montana a few years ago and kind of slowly
- 49:01Speaker 1: took more interest in it. Why didn't you want to
- 49:03Speaker 1: hunt Colorado when you guys had all that hunting right
- 49:05Speaker 1: out of your door. I don't know, that's a good question.
- 49:10Speaker 1: Maybe it's all this, you know what I think it
- 49:12Speaker 1: is what your kids are getting older and it's not
- 49:14Speaker 1: such a pain, and you ask anymore? Probably, Yeah, So
- 49:17Speaker 1: I think about it gives a chance to think about
- 49:18Speaker 1: something else. Yeah, definitely, definitely um and over the uh,
- 49:23Speaker 1: the pandemic. She took her Hunter's safety course because it
- 49:28Speaker 1: was something to do. You could do it online, you know,
- 49:31Speaker 1: the whole thing. Anyway, she drew the tag, we both
- 49:34Speaker 1: drew antelope tags. We went out to eastern Montana, and
- 49:37Speaker 1: I was like nervous, man, Like, I did not like,
- 49:40Speaker 1: I don't get that way taking my kid hunting. I
- 49:43Speaker 1: have old I have friends who started hunting late in
- 49:47Speaker 1: life that like, I didn't ever get nervous taking them, um,
- 49:53Speaker 1: because I knew, like if things went badly, I just
- 49:57Speaker 1: had a feeling it's something she wouldn't never do again,
- 50:01Speaker 1: Like if she ended up having a horrible time or
- 50:04Speaker 1: wounded an animal and we didn't get it, it's very
- 50:08Speaker 1: that was very much like weighing on me, like putting
- 50:11Speaker 1: things together in a way that everything went well, but
- 50:15Speaker 1: we know, I mean, neither of us knew up until
- 50:19Speaker 1: the moment she pulled the trigger. If she would even
- 50:21Speaker 1: pull the trigger, she might decide it's not something she
- 50:25Speaker 1: wanted to do. Um. So anyway, we went out. We
- 50:29Speaker 1: had a couple of stocks, like right off the bat
- 50:32Speaker 1: at first light and I was kind of glad they
- 50:35Speaker 1: didn't work out, because you wanted to like get some
- 50:39Speaker 1: experience in there. You don't to be like first toime
- 50:42Speaker 1: step off the road, boom, it's over. Then she'd be like, yeah, exactly. Um.
- 50:47Speaker 1: So we chased a bunch of antelope around for two
- 50:49Speaker 1: or three hours, got busted, you know, a couple of
- 50:53Speaker 1: times it didn't work out. And then late morning I
- 50:56Speaker 1: saw a little buck a dough in a fawn like
- 50:59Speaker 1: laying a it's the base of this little knob. They
- 51:02Speaker 1: were in the perfect spot to like come up behind
- 51:06Speaker 1: him on top of the hill and shoot down on
- 51:08Speaker 1: that little buck. Um. But man, I was like heart pounding,
- 51:14Speaker 1: like very worried about how it was going to go.
- 51:17Speaker 1: It was just the the ecotomy between like the husband
- 51:21Speaker 1: wife thing was different. Man. It was because you thought
- 51:24Speaker 1: you were afraid she's gonna cripple one up or miss one.
- 51:27Speaker 1: I wasn't so much worried about missing like that. I
- 51:30Speaker 1: think would be easier to get through than wounding one. Um.
- 51:33Speaker 1: And you're like the whole time, you're acting like you
- 51:39Speaker 1: would not act with a buddy, Like I'm not saying
- 51:42Speaker 1: like hurry up, don't you see him? Like, you know,
- 51:46Speaker 1: things you were doing that I was not. I was like,
- 51:49Speaker 1: I've been doing that, I know, but I was like exactly, yeah,
- 51:56Speaker 1: I I feel like I can't act like that. There's
- 51:58Speaker 1: like I can't make this into something like getting in
- 52:02Speaker 1: a fight over the dishes at home, Like if I
- 52:04Speaker 1: start irritating her in a way like that, like this
- 52:09Speaker 1: is not going to be good. Um. So it ended
- 52:12Speaker 1: up all working out. Like it's a short shot hundred
- 52:15Speaker 1: yards the animal he runs a little ways and tips
- 52:19Speaker 1: over and she was freaking out that because he ran
- 52:22Speaker 1: he was wounded, But it all worked out. Um and
- 52:26Speaker 1: I and I don't know, man, the whole thing like
- 52:29Speaker 1: taught me maybe I should be acting like that around
- 52:32Speaker 1: other people, not just my wife when I'm out hunting
- 52:35Speaker 1: with him, like be more patient. Kind of realized that
- 52:39Speaker 1: not everyone has the experience, not everyone can see the
- 52:44Speaker 1: game that what you know what I mean, he's gonna
- 52:47Speaker 1: turn nice. That's not I'm not saying that there's still
- 52:51Speaker 1: start petting all dogs, like the whisper yelling is not
- 52:54Speaker 1: not gonna end. But it was definitely like maybe there's
- 52:59Speaker 1: something to that. Taking things a little slower, explaining things
- 53:02Speaker 1: a little better, you know it goes a long way. Yeah, yeah,
- 53:08Speaker 1: people like that. See, yeah, because I find myself yelling.
- 53:11Speaker 1: I like yell at my kid about the need to
- 53:14Speaker 1: be calm. But which is a contradiction. Think about if
- 53:18Speaker 1: it was Katie, you would not like, oh, dude, I'll
- 53:21Speaker 1: be walking on eggshells exactly. Oh yeah, well, oh my god.
- 53:25Speaker 1: I'd be like, yeah, it was well, you know, I
- 53:28Speaker 1: could see why you're doing it that way, but you know,
- 53:31Speaker 1: another way to look at it would be that you'd
- 53:33Speaker 1: walk quietly. Yeah, but you know now that I's only
- 53:38Speaker 1: see your point. Yeah, I just thought, um, you know,
- 53:42Speaker 1: and it was emotional for which I'm not saying it's
- 53:45Speaker 1: not emotional for me. But to see an adult in
- 53:49Speaker 1: their forties like their reaction to the their first ever
- 53:53Speaker 1: kill is a big game animal. It's an animal. It's
- 53:55Speaker 1: not a squirrel or even a turkey. You know, it's different,
- 54:00Speaker 1: and uh, yeah, I think I'll take away a lot
- 54:03Speaker 1: of lessons from that. When I took my wife squirrel
- 54:06Speaker 1: hunting for the first time, she hit one in the ear,
- 54:10Speaker 1: and uh, they left a little blood trail and snow,
- 54:13Speaker 1: but we couldn't find it tore up. She thought it
- 54:17Speaker 1: was more binary, right, She thought, it's like it dies
- 54:21Speaker 1: or it gets away. She didn't know about an ear shot. Yeah,
- 54:25Speaker 1: they're not shoulder. I I don't really know, but that
- 54:28Speaker 1: that that squirrel's gonna be fine in spite of the
- 54:31Speaker 1: little drips of blood that it came off as a
- 54:32Speaker 1: year but you like got him in the ear like earhole, No,
- 54:36Speaker 1: like like pierced his ear. Oh I got you know,
- 54:39Speaker 1: not the ear hole like like like creased, it's ear
- 54:44Speaker 1: area pierced. I'm surprised that a little blood trail. Yeah
- 54:49Speaker 1: I didn't in the snow, you know, by my mom's place.
- 54:53Speaker 1: That gets me excited to go hunt. But I watched
- 54:55Speaker 1: that squirrel for a long time, running up down, you know,
- 54:58Speaker 1: getting away. But yeah, increased him, increase a little melan.
- 55:02Speaker 1: She felt horrible. Yeah, he'll be all right. Crunched him.
- 55:07Speaker 1: So you can start being super nice everybody. No, no,
- 55:10Speaker 1: she she got her first count out. Now I can.
- 55:13Speaker 1: Now I can like act like I normally would. But no,
- 55:15Speaker 1: it taught me a lot. Like you take for granted
- 55:19Speaker 1: the experience you have, you know, and you can't just
- 55:23Speaker 1: act like you do with people. What exactly is the problem,
- 55:27Speaker 1: you know, what exactly is your problem. It was cool,
- 55:32Speaker 1: it was good. Or another thing you'll do is you
- 55:34Speaker 1: get like really condescending. Not you one one will get
- 55:39Speaker 1: really condescending where you're like, okay, so tell me where
- 55:43Speaker 1: you're not getting it. Like, there's a deer in front
- 55:46Speaker 1: of us, right, do you see the deer? You know, different,
- 55:51Speaker 1: different approaches like that I find to be very helpful. Yeah,
- 55:55Speaker 1: would you rather have me shoot the deer? Um? Yeah,
- 56:02Speaker 1: that's good. It's nice. Totill go hunting with your wife. Yeah,
- 56:06Speaker 1: I don't think it'll be something she's you know, she's
- 56:08Speaker 1: not gonna be out there filling four or five tags
- 56:10Speaker 1: a year. But if she does one big game hunt
- 56:12Speaker 1: in a turkey hunt in the spring, that'd be great.
- 56:15Speaker 1: It will be good. I'm gonna be done hunting a
- 56:17Speaker 1: couple of years. Yeah, I'm just I mean, that's the
- 56:23Speaker 1: thing is, uh, you start getting those tags filled from
- 56:26Speaker 1: other people and all your time's taking up doing that.
- 56:30Speaker 1: My boy he got he got four big game animals.
- 56:35Speaker 1: That's two more than I did. It's like I'm I'm
- 56:38Speaker 1: I'm wrapping her und Yeah. We pulled in a couple
- 56:40Speaker 1: of extra big game animals, a couple of turkeys. So
- 56:43Speaker 1: imagine what not. You know, I'll pretty soon all have
- 56:45Speaker 1: three hunters. I won't hut any more. No, you're gonna
- 56:48Speaker 1: have to be nice. I don't know. You got pretty
- 56:50Speaker 1: lucky with James, and he seems to respond well to
- 56:53Speaker 1: your condescending technique, but the other two might not. Yeah,
- 56:56Speaker 1: that's what I ask because Rosie's gonna be up. She's fired,
- 57:00Speaker 1: but she's fired off. Do you anticipate having to handle No,
- 57:05Speaker 1: I'm going to act totally different with her than her brother.
- 57:08Speaker 1: That's what I wanted, way different. Yeah, I'm gonna act
- 57:12Speaker 1: totally different. But she's she got a turkey last year,
- 57:16Speaker 1: didn't she killed two turkeys? But hunting big game. I'm
- 57:19Speaker 1: gonna act different. I just know I will, because there's
- 57:22Speaker 1: just a dynamic. It's like trying not like I don't
- 57:25Speaker 1: have the I don't have the dynamic of being that
- 57:28Speaker 1: that like. I want her to go hunt like more
- 57:31Speaker 1: than I want my boy to go right, because I
- 57:33Speaker 1: want I don't want to fall prey like. I want
- 57:36Speaker 1: her to feel compelled to do it and not fall
- 57:39Speaker 1: into this like boy girl. However, I just know that
- 57:44Speaker 1: I'll act different to her. Yeah, I just more. I
- 57:47Speaker 1: mean like I'm just flat out I'm more tolerant. I'm
- 57:50Speaker 1: more talent with her than I am. I mean, I like,
- 57:53Speaker 1: I act out my I've taken my dad's role and
- 57:57Speaker 1: I've given my kid my role, and it just we're
- 58:01Speaker 1: in the trap of we're in the father son trap. Yeah,
- 58:05Speaker 1: I do find that I with my daughter, I explained
- 58:09Speaker 1: things a lot more than my dad did to me
- 58:11Speaker 1: with my son who's hunting now, Like I feel like
- 58:15Speaker 1: it was just like do this back in the old days,
- 58:17Speaker 1: and you just did that. But now I find myself
- 58:20Speaker 1: saying why we're doing things, which is good hunter. So yeah,
- 58:28Speaker 1: this year was um my first time going past Tennessee
- 58:34Speaker 1: to hunt west. So. I grew up on the Chesspeake
- 58:37Speaker 1: Bay and so saltwater fishing Chesspeake Bay, outer banks hunting
- 58:42Speaker 1: in Virginia, UM, North Carolina and Tennessee. So as soon
- 58:48Speaker 1: as I came on the mediator, you know, and so
- 58:51Speaker 1: you got work, colleagues, friends, you know, getting tags kind
- 58:55Speaker 1: of get into that I had been putting in over
- 58:58Speaker 1: the last couple of years, tags unsuccessful and successful. This
- 59:03Speaker 1: year I got success on a rifle tag for a
- 59:07Speaker 1: problem horn. Now I started watching videos trying to get myself,
- 59:12Speaker 1: you know, excited about it, and and I was, and
- 59:15Speaker 1: then instantly kind of turned into like, now, what hell
- 59:18Speaker 1: am I going to do? I didn't want to bug
- 59:20Speaker 1: anybody in the office, you know, it was to what
- 59:24Speaker 1: to do? So in August Um, I went with Hayden,
- 59:27Speaker 1: what would you not want to bug anybody out? Everybody?
- 59:31Speaker 1: That's why you work here? Yeah? Man, Well, I mean
- 59:33Speaker 1: I just figured everybody's got you know, they've got their
- 59:35Speaker 1: own tags, they've got things going on, and the last
- 59:37Speaker 1: thing they need is a hanger on or to you know, well,
- 59:41Speaker 1: going forward after this event, yeah, I can't. You just
- 59:44Speaker 1: wouldn't want to go hunting and have someone just yell
- 59:47Speaker 1: condescending things into your ear while you have animals, So
- 59:52Speaker 1: you do realize we're hunting, right. That's that's how the
- 59:57Speaker 1: story kind of felt like it was getting to in
- 59:58Speaker 1: a minute. Um. But yeah, in August Um Hayden drawn
- 1:00:03Speaker 1: a archery tag prong horn. So that was like my
- 1:00:06Speaker 1: first you know, situational experience. I quickly realized after about
- 1:00:12Speaker 1: a day, who the hell is gonna you know, stock
- 1:00:16Speaker 1: a rocket ship in a flat field with a bow.
- 1:00:18Speaker 1: It just it seemed like it was impossible. So I
- 1:00:21Speaker 1: kind of knew that. Like that trip it was my
- 1:00:25Speaker 1: desk was like spotting on the scope and giving pep
- 1:00:28Speaker 1: talks on blowing stalks. You got a buddy, You'll you'll
- 1:00:31Speaker 1: get the next one. It just takes one. Just it
- 1:00:34Speaker 1: just takes one or twenty. Um. But yeah, like inside
- 1:00:38Speaker 1: of my head, I was kind of going and you
- 1:00:41Speaker 1: got it made with this rifle tag. I mean not
- 1:00:45Speaker 1: like in a cocky way, but just in a way
- 1:00:47Speaker 1: like all these all these program hornies can't get with.
- 1:00:52Speaker 1: I just thought, well, I'm gonna tag out day one
- 1:00:54Speaker 1: or two. I might as well go ahead and put
- 1:00:56Speaker 1: Hayes Taxidermy into my phone. You know it's gonna be
- 1:01:00Speaker 1: you know, easy, It's gonna be a giant. Yeah. I
- 1:01:03Speaker 1: haven't gotten them yet, but exactly let me know, John.
- 1:01:08Speaker 1: But so come October, you know, two months later, that
- 1:01:12Speaker 1: confidence level starts sinking a little bit, probably not unlike
- 1:01:15Speaker 1: when you felt confident going to the open up for
- 1:01:19Speaker 1: trampled by turtles, and then come showtime, that nerves starts kicking.
- 1:01:24Speaker 1: So um, day one, Um, you know, I'm kind of
- 1:01:29Speaker 1: I'm in a local unit around here, which I kind
- 1:01:32Speaker 1: of learned quickly that the prong horner going to be
- 1:01:36Speaker 1: mainly out towards the eastern side of the state, the
- 1:01:39Speaker 1: open country, in the open country. So I'm I'm kind
- 1:01:43Speaker 1: of basically day one hitting little B M A s
- 1:01:46Speaker 1: and state state pieces. And I did see a small herd,
- 1:01:50Speaker 1: but they were so far on private and today we're
- 1:01:52Speaker 1: going to get to public anytime soon, and they didn't
- 1:01:55Speaker 1: that day Day two and three, I didn't see anything. Now,
- 1:02:01Speaker 1: confidence levels dropping. I'm getting in my head time's ticking,
- 1:02:06Speaker 1: like I've got so excited for this tag that you
- 1:02:10Speaker 1: know it's gonna be uh, let me flying back with
- 1:02:14Speaker 1: tag suit call the text and there was back yeah,
- 1:02:19Speaker 1: trying to get your deposit back. So it was It
- 1:02:25Speaker 1: made me think in my head, I'm like, you know, okay,
- 1:02:28Speaker 1: a lesson learned here would have been studying the ship
- 1:02:30Speaker 1: out of the units. No, what's got more access than
- 1:02:35Speaker 1: others and what holds you know, whatever you're hunting for.
- 1:02:37Speaker 1: The only question I had when I read your story
- 1:02:40Speaker 1: earlier in the notes was right here, because I figured
- 1:02:43Speaker 1: someone gave you advice on where to apply. You didn't
- 1:02:46Speaker 1: just potentially pick this unit out of a hat and
- 1:02:49Speaker 1: apply right right, So I want to know who's to
- 1:02:52Speaker 1: blame who. After the podcast, I can go point my
- 1:02:55Speaker 1: finger out and go why did you tell them? And
- 1:02:56Speaker 1: go get there? I thought so. So I think that's
- 1:03:00Speaker 1: that's an important point though, because I think a lot
- 1:03:02Speaker 1: of people that are planning their first Western hunt they
- 1:03:06Speaker 1: may not do the kind of research like you might
- 1:03:09Speaker 1: find a unit that's easy to draw for like whatever
- 1:03:14Speaker 1: your antelope, there might be a reason why it's easy
- 1:03:16Speaker 1: to draw. There's no public land, you know. Listen, I
- 1:03:19Speaker 1: did the exact same thing on a mountain range nearby here.
- 1:03:23Speaker 1: I won't name any and it was it was a
- 1:03:25Speaker 1: prong Horn tag too. It's like my first or second
- 1:03:27Speaker 1: year here and Dan Doty, the old producer of Meter
- 1:03:30Speaker 1: and I were like, look at this, it's like almost
- 1:03:33Speaker 1: it's so close, and we got the tags, were like sweet,
- 1:03:36Speaker 1: we're partying. And then we started driving around and literally
- 1:03:40Speaker 1: could not access a single piece of public land, not
- 1:03:44Speaker 1: a one. In the end, we ended up going down
- 1:03:47Speaker 1: a road that, judging by the map, it was pretty
- 1:03:50Speaker 1: much open, and got into one and shot to prong
- 1:03:54Speaker 1: Horn box left and the next day we're like, oh,
- 1:03:57Speaker 1: that's right. To other people in the office. It also
- 1:03:59Speaker 1: apply to the same hack. We're like, let's come back here.
- 1:04:01Speaker 1: This is awesome. We got a spot. We get there
- 1:04:03Speaker 1: locked gate, so I think we had got we had
- 1:04:07Speaker 1: done a little bit of trespassing to get to you
- 1:04:09Speaker 1: the state land, you know. Um. But anyways, so you're
- 1:04:13Speaker 1: not You're not alone in this. Yeah. Yeah, it's a
- 1:04:17Speaker 1: common mistake, I think. So all through the first three days, Um,
- 1:04:21Speaker 1: you know, Garrett had Garrett long had texted me and
- 1:04:24Speaker 1: and I had a good relationship with Garrett and the
- 1:04:29Speaker 1: fact that he's probably who I dealt with the most
- 1:04:31Speaker 1: over the last couple of years. So I tell him no,
- 1:04:34Speaker 1: no luck, no luck. Day four comes along and he's like, hey,
- 1:04:38Speaker 1: I've got some permission on a private piece. Um. So
- 1:04:44Speaker 1: my comfidence level starts to go back up. I'm like, okay,
- 1:04:48Speaker 1: off Garrett with me. You know, he'll he'll be good
- 1:04:50Speaker 1: to have their tax sermons back. Yeah, exactly. Um, but
- 1:04:57Speaker 1: that's when I realized that I'm now I'm really letting
- 1:05:00Speaker 1: ship get in my head because now I see it.
- 1:05:02Speaker 1: Now I'm saying, Okay, this is actually gonna happen. I've
- 1:05:05Speaker 1: got caret here, who I naturally would feel completely comfortable with.
- 1:05:08Speaker 1: But with this being my first tag, I felt the
- 1:05:12Speaker 1: pressure of like, man, he's gone out of his way
- 1:05:15Speaker 1: to get the permission. I gotta get this done. Well,
- 1:05:20Speaker 1: I missed the first shot. I couldn't believe it. I
- 1:05:23Speaker 1: was just, you know, shook up. In this particular field
- 1:05:28Speaker 1: is probably about two sixty seven seventy. That sounds a
- 1:05:35Speaker 1: little bit like what he told me, is you walk
- 1:05:37Speaker 1: back to the truck at golf term. You might not know,
- 1:05:39Speaker 1: but when you were bearing down on him, was it
- 1:05:42Speaker 1: like were there nerves? Oh yeah, My breathing was out
- 1:05:45Speaker 1: of control, of heart going through my chest, you know,
- 1:05:47Speaker 1: just everything to build up of like this being the
- 1:05:50Speaker 1: first Western hunt, was all happening right there. Did he
- 1:05:53Speaker 1: ask you what exactly was the problem? In a little
- 1:05:56Speaker 1: bit he did. So I shot and there's this sort
- 1:06:00Speaker 1: of like um crested ridge that runs through like dissects
- 1:06:05Speaker 1: the center of this property. Well, they had taken off
- 1:06:07Speaker 1: off the backside and I couldn't see him, trenaline still pumping.
- 1:06:12Speaker 1: All of a sudden, the buck must have turned and
- 1:06:17Speaker 1: comes right up to the ridge line about seventy five
- 1:06:19Speaker 1: yards from me. So now I'm a wreck. I'm trying
- 1:06:23Speaker 1: to swing around I got bipod legs flailing everywhere, and
- 1:06:27Speaker 1: I'm looking through a scope that because I'm just worried
- 1:06:29Speaker 1: that he's gonna bolt magnified way too much. Couldn't get
- 1:06:33Speaker 1: him in in the scope miss two. Now, I thought
- 1:06:38Speaker 1: you couldn't get him to the sculpe just because you know,
- 1:06:40Speaker 1: it's so magnified, and I'm just trying to find him
- 1:06:42Speaker 1: and locate him in that scope quickly. But I found him.
- 1:06:45Speaker 1: And yeah, well, how is the missing him related to
- 1:06:49Speaker 1: not be able to find him? I don't know, just
- 1:06:51Speaker 1: general flustered nous. Yeah, yeah, so because you didn't just
- 1:06:54Speaker 1: shoot without finding them in there? No? No, no, Yeah,
- 1:06:59Speaker 1: the wheels of calling off day way off. And I
- 1:07:02Speaker 1: and I remember at this point, I'm not sure if
- 1:07:05Speaker 1: if f bombs flew out or I think what happened
- 1:07:09Speaker 1: was I just kind of like pulled my head down
- 1:07:11Speaker 1: and stared at the dirt and I just said, hey, Garrett,
- 1:07:16Speaker 1: can we not mention this to Steve? I haven't heard
- 1:07:19Speaker 1: until now. Yeah, Well that's good. I know I can
- 1:07:22Speaker 1: count on him. But yeah, so on the way back
- 1:07:25Speaker 1: walk into the truck, he was like a buddy, how
- 1:07:28Speaker 1: was a big buck? He's like I said, how close
- 1:07:34Speaker 1: was that? How close was he on this? Probably seventy
- 1:07:36Speaker 1: you could have thrown a rock at him, you know.
- 1:07:40Speaker 1: It just kind of ribbing me having fun. So day
- 1:07:44Speaker 1: four comes along and they're in the same exact spot.
- 1:07:49Speaker 1: So I'm like, all right, I remember where I screwed
- 1:07:52Speaker 1: up on day three. I'm going to do this all
- 1:07:54Speaker 1: every but this time I'm further. I'm probably I'm on
- 1:07:58Speaker 1: the other side of the property, eating over two ridges
- 1:08:01Speaker 1: and neural on the ridge line. Do you check your rifle? Yeah?
- 1:08:06Speaker 1: All good? There. Um, we sat there for like twenty minutes.
- 1:08:10Speaker 1: I thought, calm so I could rule out, you know,
- 1:08:15Speaker 1: and I can't. I can't explain it. I don't know
- 1:08:17Speaker 1: why m three and at this point now it's not
- 1:08:23Speaker 1: I can't look at it and go that was because
- 1:08:27Speaker 1: I was flustered or whatever. I can't explain why it happened.
- 1:08:30Speaker 1: And I'm embarrassed, you know, I'm just like crushed. I
- 1:08:34Speaker 1: just want to tucktail and walk off. Uh. But yeah,
- 1:08:38Speaker 1: he's he's great at consoling. So final day and I'm
- 1:08:44Speaker 1: I'm a wreck, you know. I mean, I'm talked to
- 1:08:45Speaker 1: my wife that night on the phone and she's trying
- 1:08:47Speaker 1: to talk about the ledge. You'll be fine. I got
- 1:08:50Speaker 1: one more day, and I'm thinking, you know how the
- 1:08:52Speaker 1: other daste went. The next day starts off horrible. I
- 1:08:58Speaker 1: got I haven't had a nose eat since I was
- 1:09:00Speaker 1: a kid, and it was just pouring out of my nose.
- 1:09:04Speaker 1: Trying to get out of the house to go meet him,
- 1:09:06Speaker 1: I'm shoving cleanex in my nose, trying to lace my boots.
- 1:09:09Speaker 1: Inexplicable nose bleep from the dryer, from dryer, so I
- 1:09:13Speaker 1: guess it is applicable. Yeah, lace on my boots and
- 1:09:18Speaker 1: and and head off and I meet him and there
- 1:09:22Speaker 1: they are again. You know, it's like, well, I don't
- 1:09:26Speaker 1: think they were worried at that point. Yeah, some of
- 1:09:30Speaker 1: might shoot over here, but just sound just you're good,
- 1:09:34Speaker 1: you're good. So, um, Garrett's there for a little bit
- 1:09:39Speaker 1: and he's like, well, hey, buddy, I got a meeting
- 1:09:40Speaker 1: I to go go to. And I all right, it's cool.
- 1:09:44Speaker 1: I'm thinking you probably just can't stay seeming us the
- 1:09:46Speaker 1: fourth time. So um, yeah, I'm there by myself and
- 1:09:50Speaker 1: I'm seeing him on the ridge line, and like I said,
- 1:09:52Speaker 1: the way that it crested, I'm trying to say, okay, well,
- 1:09:56Speaker 1: if they come off my side, I'm good. But if
- 1:09:59Speaker 1: they go off the back side, I've got to somehow
- 1:10:00Speaker 1: managed to get all the way around to out the
- 1:10:02Speaker 1: side of the property before they get off the line.
- 1:10:04Speaker 1: Came off to my side. Long story short, crawled quickly
- 1:10:09Speaker 1: into position, got in the corner, first shot perfect right
- 1:10:12Speaker 1: behind the shoulder. I think I was about two eight
- 1:10:17Speaker 1: two ninety on that one. Maybe um good poke yeah, yeah,
- 1:10:21Speaker 1: and you know, the rest of them took off and
- 1:10:24Speaker 1: he just stood there for a second and then just dropped.
- 1:10:28Speaker 1: Um and Garrett was there or not there, not there
- 1:10:30Speaker 1: on that one, so said, I don't know if he
- 1:10:32Speaker 1: met I got to leave in a minute, but he left, Yeah,
- 1:10:35Speaker 1: he had already left. So I was there a glass
- 1:10:36Speaker 1: and I'm probably about an hour hour and a half.
- 1:10:39Speaker 1: And as a matter of fact, it just texted me
- 1:10:41Speaker 1: like maybe five minutes before he's like, hey see anything.
- 1:10:44Speaker 1: I'm like, now they're still there not I think no,
- 1:10:47Speaker 1: sooner did I kind of like look down for a
- 1:10:48Speaker 1: second look up. They had gotten up and started kind
- 1:10:51Speaker 1: of walking to the line. Um. Yeah, so I made sure,
- 1:10:57Speaker 1: uh you know that he was down in uh called
- 1:11:01Speaker 1: my wife felt that was the right thing to do. First,
- 1:11:03Speaker 1: thank thanks for the pep talk. Quickly called Garrett because
- 1:11:08Speaker 1: I wanted to sort of redeem myself after those those days.
- 1:11:11Speaker 1: He was excited and chucked it in the back of
- 1:11:14Speaker 1: the rental vehicle, gutted it, and then chucked it in
- 1:11:17Speaker 1: the back of the rental vehicle. Learned that trying to
- 1:11:19Speaker 1: take pictures when you're by yourself and setting timers on
- 1:11:24Speaker 1: your phone to prop it up on your pack and
- 1:11:26Speaker 1: try to get a picture sucks. Um, but yeah, toss
- 1:11:30Speaker 1: it in the rental vehicle. Um, take it back to
- 1:11:34Speaker 1: Hayden's and started cutting ups quick as I could. Had
- 1:11:37Speaker 1: to delay my flight an extra day, Yeah, because I
- 1:11:40Speaker 1: wanted to make sure I got it frozen. But um
- 1:11:44Speaker 1: but yeah, now I was. I was excited. Finally had
- 1:11:47Speaker 1: to make that call to to John send it up there. Um,
- 1:11:52Speaker 1: so John Hayes is gonna do it. What's he gonna
- 1:11:53Speaker 1: do it? He's gonna do it. Wasn't a shoulder mount,
- 1:11:56Speaker 1: but it was like a shoulder mount. And normally I
- 1:11:58Speaker 1: would do a free him or you know your amount,
- 1:12:01Speaker 1: but with this just being my first wed and I
- 1:12:04Speaker 1: wanted to do something special. Um, so yeah, I was
- 1:12:08Speaker 1: very excited about that. And I'll quickly recap my second hunt. Um,
- 1:12:14Speaker 1: I won't. I won't go as long into it. But
- 1:12:16Speaker 1: um I went to Nebraska probably sixteen days after that
- 1:12:23Speaker 1: to Jordan buds and um So, I took my wife
- 1:12:28Speaker 1: out there and we're out there for a week. And uh,
- 1:12:32Speaker 1: ironically the Nebraska episode for Meat Eater aired. Why I
- 1:12:36Speaker 1: was there, um So there, I was sitting out in
- 1:12:39Speaker 1: the exact same field that you guys were hunting, watching
- 1:12:42Speaker 1: it in her truck on her phone with her and
- 1:12:45Speaker 1: I and listeners. I'm not blowing smoke because Steve sitting here,
- 1:12:50Speaker 1: but your demeanor in that episode, just talking about like
- 1:12:54Speaker 1: telling Jordan, hey, I'm having a great time, yeah, that
- 1:12:58Speaker 1: she's sweating it, and then telling her at the end
- 1:13:00Speaker 1: you know what and about you know what and about that.
- 1:13:04Speaker 1: For me on this trip, it just it kind of
- 1:13:06Speaker 1: just was like a turning point in my head, you know,
- 1:13:08Speaker 1: just kind of resonated. Um So, I didn't feel that
- 1:13:12Speaker 1: like pressure that I had on the Pronghorn hunt. Um
- 1:13:16Speaker 1: had a good time, laugh the whole time last day
- 1:13:20Speaker 1: buzzer Beater, last hour of my hunt before we had
- 1:13:23Speaker 1: to pack up, and had a rapid city. Um yeah,
- 1:13:29Speaker 1: beautiful buck starts coming up the river bed and this
- 1:13:32Speaker 1: was an archery tag and got to about forty yards
- 1:13:37Speaker 1: and let it fly and perfect shot. Crunch. Yeah. So
- 1:13:46Speaker 1: you sent me the prong horn, but you didn't send
- 1:13:47Speaker 1: me that. I'll send it to you. Yeah, and it
- 1:13:50Speaker 1: was great. It was great being there, um whether I
- 1:13:52Speaker 1: mean yeah, she as a matter of fact, she had
- 1:13:55Speaker 1: seen that same bug. I didn't realize that when I
- 1:13:58Speaker 1: shot it that it was a buck, but she had
- 1:14:00Speaker 1: sent me a picture and he was out of range
- 1:14:03Speaker 1: on like the second day, and um, I was like, man,
- 1:14:08Speaker 1: I hope you get to see him again and show
- 1:14:11Speaker 1: me the picture. Um so yeah, you along with Jordan.
- 1:14:14Speaker 1: You didn't get in a fight with Jordan. No, she's
- 1:14:17Speaker 1: she's she's great. Uh, I had my Um, I don't
- 1:14:23Speaker 1: know if you'll be able to tell him this picture,
- 1:14:24Speaker 1: but see if you recognize Um, let me turn it
- 1:14:29Speaker 1: real quick. Did Garrett or Jordan's speak condescending words into
- 1:14:35Speaker 1: your ears as you were trying to shoot at these
- 1:14:37Speaker 1: animals by himself? Um, I was in a pop up
- 1:14:41Speaker 1: blind actual Yeah, yeah, yeah, she's yeah, she said you
- 1:14:45Speaker 1: recognize the buy no harness, I didn't look I was
- 1:14:47Speaker 1: looking at the deer. So in the see if you
- 1:14:58Speaker 1: no the chairs, is that the one that from the thing? Yeah,
- 1:15:04Speaker 1: that's cool. Yeah, so it was kind of deemed up
- 1:15:07Speaker 1: my good luck charm. That's great man. So that was
- 1:15:10Speaker 1: from the auction house? Yeah cool? Yeah, yeah, so no,
- 1:15:14Speaker 1: it was. It was great and um, definitely and I
- 1:15:19Speaker 1: don't really know how to practice it, but I think
- 1:15:21Speaker 1: getting my big takeaway was like, yeah, you need to
- 1:15:26Speaker 1: prep physically, but man mentally, it just seems like if
- 1:15:30Speaker 1: you can let it get in your head and you can,
- 1:15:32Speaker 1: you can nose dive quick. Um. I would like to
- 1:15:36Speaker 1: work on not having last eight kills before you have
- 1:15:40Speaker 1: to take off because that's a little stressful. Yeah, keeping
- 1:15:45Speaker 1: your head right, yeah yeah. Yeah. So that was great. Excited,
- 1:15:50Speaker 1: excited to be in this room with you guys sharing it.
- 1:15:52Speaker 1: I mean, person I probably influenced me the most. And
- 1:15:56Speaker 1: you know, it's kind of cool not being in here
- 1:15:58Speaker 1: talking about an art project but actually talking about you know,
- 1:16:02Speaker 1: speaking the same language. Did you guys talk about every week? Thanks?
- 1:16:05Speaker 1: Man's good. That's great. You should definitely trying to work
- 1:16:08Speaker 1: yourself into a hunt with Steve to get to experience
- 1:16:11Speaker 1: that what it's like to be, you know, constantly put down.
- 1:16:15Speaker 1: You want the wheels to fold off in the first
- 1:16:18Speaker 1: thirty minutes. Yeah, yeah, you just you'll be forged by fire.
- 1:16:22Speaker 1: That's right. Every hunt after that will be you weren't
- 1:16:24Speaker 1: talking about. Yeah, that's the that's the way to do it,
- 1:16:27Speaker 1: so that you don't have you don't your wheels will
- 1:16:29Speaker 1: never fall off again. After one hunt with Steve, everything
- 1:16:32Speaker 1: you else will just seem like cakewalk. When people are
- 1:16:36Speaker 1: afraid of flying and they strapping into those planes. Maybe
- 1:16:40Speaker 1: it's a guy girl thing, but but when Steve took
- 1:16:43Speaker 1: me spear fishing, I didn't experience any of that. I
- 1:16:46Speaker 1: think he can't talk to you through the water. That's true.
- 1:16:52Speaker 1: He was trying to. He was trying to do things
- 1:16:54Speaker 1: with bubbles, but getting the message is not like that.
- 1:16:57Speaker 1: For me. It's only big game hunt well, score on.
- 1:17:01Speaker 1: But yeah, for some reason, I don't get that feeling
- 1:17:03Speaker 1: with spearfishing, because that's probably like frustrating the hell out
- 1:17:06Speaker 1: of you. I couldn't even stay in the same place
- 1:17:08Speaker 1: get that. I don't get that super like blood lust
- 1:17:10Speaker 1: like I get home where I just want someone to
- 1:17:12Speaker 1: get something bad. I've been spear fishing with Steve, and
- 1:17:25Speaker 1: it's been great speaking of that head headspace just like
- 1:17:31Speaker 1: you're talking about. Has been like an incredible year. Some
- 1:17:38Speaker 1: of the highlights were was actually spear fishing for me
- 1:17:41Speaker 1: when I was in Hawaii and Louisiana kind of like
- 1:17:45Speaker 1: ground breaking moments where you can, like if you put
- 1:17:48Speaker 1: your head in your mind to anything you can you
- 1:17:51Speaker 1: can make a lot happen if you calm your nerves
- 1:17:53Speaker 1: and whatnot. From going from not being able to break
- 1:17:57Speaker 1: the surface in Louisiana to like diving a decent amount.
- 1:18:03Speaker 1: But anyways, that was a highlight and can interrupt real
- 1:18:08Speaker 1: quick on that thought. Greg Fonts early on when I
- 1:18:12Speaker 1: started hanging out and explained to me that, um, if
- 1:18:15Speaker 1: there's something wrong with you, spear fishing is where you'll
- 1:18:19Speaker 1: find it, meaning like all there's no hiding from anything. Yeah,
- 1:18:27Speaker 1: total like in a total health perspective, it'll find you,
- 1:18:31Speaker 1: like mentally, physically. Yeah. He's just like, if there's a problem,
- 1:18:35Speaker 1: it'll emerge. It emerged there, dude. That's interesting though, because
- 1:18:42Speaker 1: after I learned how to dive a little bit, right,
- 1:18:46Speaker 1: I don't I felt very calm, very very calm, but
- 1:18:51Speaker 1: I just had to do something that was one of
- 1:18:56Speaker 1: the hardest things I've ever done in my life, which
- 1:19:00Speaker 1: is open up for a band called Trampled by Turtles,
- 1:19:04Speaker 1: which all of you guys probably already know. This story,
- 1:19:08Speaker 1: long story short, Karin Hook got my number to Dave Sevenette,
- 1:19:13Speaker 1: who is the lead singer for Trampled by Turtles. This
- 1:19:15Speaker 1: was in July. This is my wife is pregnant. We're
- 1:19:20Speaker 1: sitting on the couch and I get a text from
- 1:19:22Speaker 1: Dave saying basically, do you want a gig? Do you
- 1:19:28Speaker 1: want to place? Pitch you to Dave? Just what do
- 1:19:34Speaker 1: you think about my idea? So those guys actually used
- 1:19:37Speaker 1: the word gig. He used the word gig. Who reached
- 1:19:41Speaker 1: out to? Who Dave sent texted me with an idea?
- 1:19:45Speaker 1: And he was like, what do you think about this?
- 1:19:47Speaker 1: And you know, like should I ask him? And you know,
- 1:19:50Speaker 1: if yes, like should I? Can I have his contact information?
- 1:19:54Speaker 1: And immediately I just thought it was the best idea
- 1:19:58Speaker 1: I ever And that's all so that makes even better
- 1:20:01Speaker 1: they're searching you out. Yeah, it had seen like a
- 1:20:04Speaker 1: video of Chester singing and he just thought he was
- 1:20:07Speaker 1: really talented. Who told me? Dude? Anyways, like if people
- 1:20:14Speaker 1: like I am not. I learned how to play guitar
- 1:20:17Speaker 1: a couple of years ago and I picked it up
- 1:20:20Speaker 1: and I was like, I want to learn how to
- 1:20:21Speaker 1: play this for my wife at the wedding. And I learned,
- 1:20:25Speaker 1: you know, the basic chords, and I took some online stuff,
- 1:20:29Speaker 1: tried to take lessons, ended up playing the show. I
- 1:20:33Speaker 1: would have never in a million years I thought I
- 1:20:38Speaker 1: would be standing in front of like six people two
- 1:20:43Speaker 1: years later with a guitar in my hand trying to
- 1:20:46Speaker 1: get through a set list. Like never in a million years.
- 1:20:50Speaker 1: So you girls, get away, l Yeah, let's get out
- 1:20:57Speaker 1: of here, Carl. It's getting crazy. So Dave texted me,
- 1:21:02Speaker 1: and I'm sitting on the couch with my wife, like
- 1:21:04Speaker 1: I said, we were pregnant, and he said, you want
- 1:21:06Speaker 1: to open for it? She was? She was, she was pregnant.
- 1:21:11Speaker 1: I don't know why I always say that, but yes,
- 1:21:13Speaker 1: I was not pregnant. It was my wife and uh,
- 1:21:18Speaker 1: he said, do you want a gig December one? And
- 1:21:20Speaker 1: it's July. And I thought about it, and she was
- 1:21:22Speaker 1: jumping up and down, saying you have to do it,
- 1:21:24Speaker 1: you have to do it. So I called Dave back
- 1:21:27Speaker 1: and I said, I think I'm gonna do it, but
- 1:21:30Speaker 1: I really got to buckle down. So I just played
- 1:21:35Speaker 1: guitar as much as I could. I hadn't played in
- 1:21:37Speaker 1: front of anybody. I did a few sets at the
- 1:21:41Speaker 1: same restaurant in Bozeman twice, Bridget Brewing. They went okay,
- 1:21:46Speaker 1: but then you're saying you played at Bridget Brewing again,
- 1:21:49Speaker 1: but a different branches and different branch locations, so it
- 1:21:52Speaker 1: was like two shows. Yeah. They really helped me out,
- 1:21:54Speaker 1: you know. So I asked Carl to do this with me.
- 1:22:00Speaker 1: Carl Hansen, he worked with us, and he's, uh, he
- 1:22:02Speaker 1: plays in some metal bands and things like that, and
- 1:22:05Speaker 1: I just needed some help, you know, to help me
- 1:22:09Speaker 1: along on this. So we got a sett list together
- 1:22:11Speaker 1: and we practiced, um, I don't know, once a week,
- 1:22:15Speaker 1: starting in September maybe is when we started practicing with
- 1:22:20Speaker 1: Carl in the days are ticking down. And another element
- 1:22:25Speaker 1: to this is we thought we were going to have
- 1:22:27Speaker 1: our child this uh when was November nine, which would
- 1:22:32Speaker 1: be ten days before this gig was actually supposed to
- 1:22:35Speaker 1: happen in Atlanta, Georgia. So I didn't really I've never
- 1:22:40Speaker 1: had a kid, and it hadn't really hit me of
- 1:22:43Speaker 1: how hard that would have actually been if our first
- 1:22:47Speaker 1: son was born on that date. He came four weeks
- 1:22:50Speaker 1: early October nine, which is actually just like a blessing
- 1:22:54Speaker 1: in disguise because I was able to help my wife
- 1:22:58Speaker 1: out with that first week or two, which is extremely challenging. Um,
- 1:23:02Speaker 1: I was able to be at home. I was able
- 1:23:04Speaker 1: to practice more, which if I wasn't able to be
- 1:23:07Speaker 1: at home, I don't know if I would have it
- 1:23:09Speaker 1: would have been hard to to do pull this off.
- 1:23:13Speaker 1: I think. So everything worked out, and here it is.
- 1:23:17Speaker 1: We Carl and I flew down to Atlanta, Georgia with
- 1:23:20Speaker 1: I had two guitars and he had his bass a
- 1:23:23Speaker 1: little tambourine on one foot and kick drum on his
- 1:23:27Speaker 1: other foot. And uh, we show up at this this theater,
- 1:23:31Speaker 1: the Buckhead Theater in Atlanta, and I walk in there
- 1:23:34Speaker 1: and it's like full on rock star like green rooms,
- 1:23:39Speaker 1: really nice. There's fog. You walk in and there's like
- 1:23:42Speaker 1: fog rolling out of the door from the smoke machine.
- 1:23:45Speaker 1: You know, we get badges, um the whole trample guys.
- 1:23:49Speaker 1: Are they like you stuff in the green room? No,
- 1:23:53Speaker 1: I could have looking back, I could have asked for that,
- 1:23:56Speaker 1: but they had put it in your rider contracted no mint,
- 1:24:01Speaker 1: yes exactly. Now, I just asked for some light beer
- 1:24:04Speaker 1: and water. Um. I could have asked for a little
- 1:24:07Speaker 1: more annoying, but I didn't need much. So Carl and
- 1:24:11Speaker 1: I show up there and the Trampled guys are out
- 1:24:14Speaker 1: on stage doing sound check, and I walked out where
- 1:24:18Speaker 1: the crowd would be standing and it is like full on,
- 1:24:21Speaker 1: just obviously a legit set up. They got like props
- 1:24:26Speaker 1: and lights and the sound guys working his magic and
- 1:24:29Speaker 1: it's like bumping, like people are going to be able
- 1:24:33Speaker 1: to hear me kind of thing. Things start to set in. Um,
- 1:24:38Speaker 1: and we do sound check and I'm not nervous at all,
- 1:24:43Speaker 1: and uh, we do sound check and it goes pretty well.
- 1:24:47Speaker 1: I was calm and and things were working out, and
- 1:24:51Speaker 1: you know, I was getting all amped and excited. We
- 1:24:54Speaker 1: go back to the green room. Hours start taking by,
- 1:24:58Speaker 1: people start showing up. You know, my hearts starting to
- 1:25:03Speaker 1: kind of do this. My breathing is a little bit,
- 1:25:06Speaker 1: it's a little harder to breathe. I tuned my guitar.
- 1:25:10Speaker 1: This is a moment when it really hit me. Backstage
- 1:25:13Speaker 1: and I walk out onto the stage and there's already
- 1:25:17Speaker 1: a crowd out there, not a full room. But I
- 1:25:20Speaker 1: walk out there and all of a sudden, I hear Chester. Yeah,
- 1:25:25Speaker 1: like whoa, there's like a vine of people in front
- 1:25:29Speaker 1: just to see me. Like they showed up early obviously
- 1:25:33Speaker 1: heard about it on the podcast and stuff. And it
- 1:25:37Speaker 1: was great. Like I was like, hey, guys, like thanks,
- 1:25:43Speaker 1: But I get back, you know, in the green room,
- 1:25:46Speaker 1: I'm just like, holy cow, here it goes, you know,
- 1:25:51Speaker 1: And Carl's all jacked and give me a pep talk
- 1:25:54Speaker 1: and whatnot. And I walk out on stage for the
- 1:25:58Speaker 1: first song and I don't know why I get like
- 1:26:02Speaker 1: this sometimes, but I am nervous. It makes me nervous
- 1:26:06Speaker 1: a little bit thinking about it. But my leg was
- 1:26:09Speaker 1: shaken a little bit. Um. I felt like I couldn't
- 1:26:13Speaker 1: feel my fingers, you know. And I felt like with
- 1:26:16Speaker 1: Seth got Mercury Pois and call that yeah, right, that's
- 1:26:22Speaker 1: I'm sure you just didn't have Yeah. I was like,
- 1:26:24Speaker 1: did I tune them before anyways? Like that's not a
- 1:26:29Speaker 1: good feeling, but especially when you gotta play with your hands. Yeah,
- 1:26:36Speaker 1: And I got through the first song, and I'm saying
- 1:26:39Speaker 1: I got through it. People will say I did great,
- 1:26:41Speaker 1: but I missed some notes and things like that. I
- 1:26:44Speaker 1: sang it got through all all the lyrics and whatnot,
- 1:26:48Speaker 1: and uh, it was kind of a relief because then
- 1:26:51Speaker 1: after that I introduced ourselves how we got there. The crowd,
- 1:26:56Speaker 1: I can't thank them enough. It was They were absolutely
- 1:27:00Speaker 1: fantastic and it's a good thing that you know, we
- 1:27:03Speaker 1: mentioned it. Steve mentioned it because if it was just
- 1:27:07Speaker 1: like a trampled by Turtles crowd, who knows, they might
- 1:27:11Speaker 1: not have been as as h That's one thing I noticed.
- 1:27:16Speaker 1: I wasn't there, but I've watched a lot of the videos,
- 1:27:18Speaker 1: and the crowd was being super respectful and listening, and
- 1:27:20Speaker 1: that's kind of a hit or miss thing in concerts.
- 1:27:21Speaker 1: But with the opening act they could just be on
- 1:27:23Speaker 1: their phones and talking to their friends and everything, but
- 1:27:25Speaker 1: everyone was locked in. We fluffed, We fluffed the dickens
- 1:27:29Speaker 1: out of them on the show, though, I mean we
- 1:27:30Speaker 1: were promoted it too, so we and everybody knew not
- 1:27:33Speaker 1: to expect too much of you. Yeah, because you downplayed it.
- 1:27:37Speaker 1: Jess was like, I'm gonna go down there and rock
- 1:27:39Speaker 1: their world, you know, But no matter what you did,
- 1:27:43Speaker 1: if Chester had gotten up there and it sucked, yeah,
- 1:27:46Speaker 1: they would have been on their phones. That's the world
- 1:27:48Speaker 1: we live in today, and they would have been with
- 1:27:50Speaker 1: their bodies. They would have gone to go get more
- 1:27:52Speaker 1: beers or whatever. But but but I also think, well, well,
- 1:27:58Speaker 1: a performer is more than is the work. It's just
- 1:28:01Speaker 1: as a very lovable person. So I feel like it
- 1:28:03Speaker 1: would be harder to disrespect Chester than someone else. Yeah,
- 1:28:08Speaker 1: most of those people didn't know Chester. Yeah, so I
- 1:28:13Speaker 1: mean they like you think that I'm saying. No, I'm
- 1:28:17Speaker 1: not saying he didn't do a good job. I'm not
- 1:28:19Speaker 1: saying good I'm saying he'd like he brings goodwill from
- 1:28:23Speaker 1: the world. I try, definitely try try and make that
- 1:28:28Speaker 1: an effort. Um. But yeah, so I introduced ourselves and
- 1:28:34Speaker 1: the crowd was like, like you said, very much so
- 1:28:37Speaker 1: listening I made it. I mean I was like making
- 1:28:41Speaker 1: eye contact with people, and um, did the show go perfect?
- 1:28:45Speaker 1: As an like an performer? No? Um, but I got
- 1:28:52Speaker 1: done with every song everyone cheered. Did you feel like
- 1:28:56Speaker 1: like as you progressed down the line, like he got looser,
- 1:29:00Speaker 1: are more comfortable and it got easier as he went along?
- 1:29:03Speaker 1: Ye that shakin went away? Um, I was starting to
- 1:29:08Speaker 1: I was starting to smile, you know, Like I walked
- 1:29:11Speaker 1: out there and I was like, yeah, a little still
- 1:29:15Speaker 1: a little stiff, but you can tell like the crowd
- 1:29:16Speaker 1: was getting into it. Whoever. I think Steve had shared
- 1:29:19Speaker 1: the video or somebody. You could see their head and
- 1:29:22Speaker 1: and Dave sent me as he was on stage, Dave
- 1:29:26Speaker 1: sent me a text he was happy as hell and
- 1:29:27Speaker 1: you had just gotten started. That's great, Dave. Dave was awesome.
- 1:29:33Speaker 1: I actually asked him. This was Carl's idea. He's like,
- 1:29:38Speaker 1: what do you think about playing one of their songs?
- 1:29:39Speaker 1: And I was like, huh. He's like, yeah, So we
- 1:29:42Speaker 1: learned um one of their songs, It's and living buying
- 1:29:49Speaker 1: how I choose. Ain't never been a gambler because I'm
- 1:29:52Speaker 1: always bound to lose. But we played that one up there,
- 1:29:56Speaker 1: and uh, Dave was kind of like, all right, and
- 1:29:59Speaker 1: those guys are like, you're pretty baldy for opening up
- 1:30:02Speaker 1: with one of our songs. But I'm really glad we did. No,
- 1:30:08Speaker 1: I did it. Yeah, And I looked at their set
- 1:30:11Speaker 1: list and he said I'd be We'd be honored. But
- 1:30:13Speaker 1: you know, I could tell that the other band guys
- 1:30:16Speaker 1: were like drop and just said done. But I'm really
- 1:30:21Speaker 1: happy that he let me do that because people knew
- 1:30:24Speaker 1: the words to that song and after they sang that,
- 1:30:27Speaker 1: it definitely loosened me up and I was I think
- 1:30:30Speaker 1: I even said, like, all right, this is starting to
- 1:30:32Speaker 1: actually be fun. I think I said that I'm anna,
- 1:30:37Speaker 1: are you gonna get more? Have you got any more gigs?
- 1:30:41Speaker 1: I have no more gigs. But what I what I
- 1:30:44Speaker 1: did learn from this experience is that like if you
- 1:30:49Speaker 1: put your mind to something, you can almost do anything
- 1:30:53Speaker 1: if you really put your mind to it and dig down.
- 1:30:56Speaker 1: I mean, I had to deal with that little bit
- 1:30:58Speaker 1: of anxiety, which I absolutely hate, and I knew I
- 1:31:02Speaker 1: was maybe gonna have that. But the more you do
- 1:31:05Speaker 1: this stuff, I feel like the more relaxed I'll get.
- 1:31:08Speaker 1: And my goal now is two get good at guitar.
- 1:31:13Speaker 1: Like before, I kind of skipped a whole bunch of stuff,
- 1:31:18Speaker 1: you know what I mean. But you you have to
- 1:31:21Speaker 1: learn your craft before you get fancy UM and I
- 1:31:24Speaker 1: kind of ended up trying to get fancy. I think
- 1:31:27Speaker 1: the quote is, um, learn to play guitar, then get sexy. Yes,
- 1:31:35Speaker 1: I think that was given to It was either given
- 1:31:39Speaker 1: or came from someone from UM. Leonard skinnered if I'm
- 1:31:44Speaker 1: not mistaken. But I like to quote a lot, so
- 1:31:50Speaker 1: I'm going to do more gigs. I actually had a
- 1:31:52Speaker 1: great time and it was fun and there's so much
- 1:31:56Speaker 1: room for improvement and so much like just playing that
- 1:32:01Speaker 1: gig definitely helped me grow as a person um and
- 1:32:04Speaker 1: like focus on the task at hand, good practice. It's
- 1:32:10Speaker 1: just I don't know, it's a great experience and I'm
- 1:32:13Speaker 1: gonna now get good at guitar because you're already sexy.
- 1:32:18Speaker 1: Yeah right. Uh do you feel that there's like a
- 1:32:24Speaker 1: compromise or a deal to be made between fishing and
- 1:32:27Speaker 1: guitar playing? Who no, no, I'm gontai stay true deficient
- 1:32:34Speaker 1: for sure. It's just like twenty minutes a day of
- 1:32:37Speaker 1: good practice. There's a difference between going and playing that
- 1:32:40Speaker 1: same song over and over. But if you like focus
- 1:32:43Speaker 1: on let's say, cross picking or flat picking and just
- 1:32:47Speaker 1: work on tech your picking technique for fifteen minutes a day,
- 1:32:52Speaker 1: it's amazing. You want to be like Eddie van Halen.
- 1:32:55Speaker 1: Doubt that, but definitely improvement, you know. And uh, all
- 1:33:00Speaker 1: that said and done, Like appreciate my wife for being
- 1:33:03Speaker 1: very supportive. And it's a real thing once you actually
- 1:33:07Speaker 1: have a child and being gone and like missing them.
- 1:33:09Speaker 1: It's like very nice and relaxing to be back in
- 1:33:11Speaker 1: Bozeman and hanging out with Oscar and Danielle for the holidays.
- 1:33:16Speaker 1: So there's a lot of people in the world that
- 1:33:18Speaker 1: don't do anything that requires any kind of discipline. After
- 1:33:21Speaker 1: a certain point in life, you just fall in the
- 1:33:24Speaker 1: total automatic pilot. I feel like it's important no discipline.
- 1:33:28Speaker 1: We got a lot of years left, all of us.
- 1:33:31Speaker 1: Do you know, good for your brain to reading you're
- 1:33:34Speaker 1: doing challenging stuff playing music because you fall into that,
- 1:33:38Speaker 1: like the kind of metal space. Just watch one of
- 1:33:43Speaker 1: those shows and they get people on stuck out of
- 1:33:44Speaker 1: ditches all night long and your your brain pass he
- 1:33:48Speaker 1: just goes down. Yeah, challenge yourself Chester, Do you feel
- 1:33:53Speaker 1: like a different person in a way, like in terms
- 1:33:57Speaker 1: of yourself identifying, Um, you know prior to guitar and
- 1:34:02Speaker 1: then now, um, I don't know about prior to the guitar.
- 1:34:11Speaker 1: After this show, I feel a little bit like I
- 1:34:14Speaker 1: got done with that show, and I went in the
- 1:34:16Speaker 1: crowd to give my aunt and uncle hug and there
- 1:34:18Speaker 1: are people coming up to me wanting pictures, saying I
- 1:34:22Speaker 1: did a great job. Saying they love me, Eaters saying
- 1:34:25Speaker 1: they love the podcast. And still in my mind, I'm like,
- 1:34:29Speaker 1: I'm I'm just you know, I'm just chester Man. Like
- 1:34:35Speaker 1: it's hard to you can legitimately use the word gig
- 1:34:38Speaker 1: now like you're you're in, you can say, you can
- 1:34:41Speaker 1: say it. Yeah, I don't know. I don't feel different.
- 1:34:44Speaker 1: I feel enlightened in a way. Yeah, you're still opportunity
- 1:34:50Speaker 1: to leave. Yes, that's the craziest thing. People like authenticity.
- 1:34:55Speaker 1: You look at that ship paternity leave. Believe when I
- 1:35:00Speaker 1: heard he came up in the wrong time. But it's
- 1:35:03Speaker 1: times changed. It's like I've had nine months a kid.
- 1:35:08Speaker 1: I missed out on nine months of just like dicking
- 1:35:11Speaker 1: around all day long by not having well. And that's
- 1:35:14Speaker 1: that's here in the States. If you lived in Latvia
- 1:35:17Speaker 1: and there will be, it's gonna be mandatory soon for
- 1:35:19Speaker 1: the dads to take off three months mandatory nine months
- 1:35:24Speaker 1: of just doing nothing. Me nine months. No, what I'm saying,
- 1:35:30Speaker 1: I had three kids. If I was, if I was
- 1:35:32Speaker 1: coming up of age now, I would have enjoyed nine
- 1:35:36Speaker 1: months of just whatever, have some more kids. But it's
- 1:35:39Speaker 1: too late now, why I mean, maybe not six months
- 1:35:49Speaker 1: it's two months. I think it's two, not three. Well,
- 1:35:52Speaker 1: I think you can. I'm not quite sure. I think
- 1:35:55Speaker 1: you can maybe do three if you need it, but
- 1:35:57Speaker 1: there might be some Well, when I found out about it,
- 1:36:00Speaker 1: was perturbed what I did as I said, if it's
- 1:36:03Speaker 1: three and three, I said, we should take one of
- 1:36:06Speaker 1: them from the guys and give it to the girls.
- 1:36:08Speaker 1: Make it to four. Yeah, I just don't see why
- 1:36:12Speaker 1: they're off, like, it's just not the same thing. You
- 1:36:14Speaker 1: didn't have a baby, Yeah, yeah, but you could be
- 1:36:17Speaker 1: the one who's staying home taking care of the baby.
- 1:36:21Speaker 1: Come on, and a child, A child is not just
- 1:36:25Speaker 1: raised by its mother. When I heard that it was
- 1:36:30Speaker 1: three and three, I never followed up on it. I said,
- 1:36:33Speaker 1: it shouldn't be three and three, be four and two.
- 1:36:35Speaker 1: They should guys should give one of theirs up for
- 1:36:39Speaker 1: the girls. I agree. It is very very nice though,
- 1:36:44Speaker 1: like being there for her, especially since it's our first kid,
- 1:36:48Speaker 1: and learning how it all works and still being able
- 1:36:51Speaker 1: to go do things on our own. I'm sure a
- 1:36:53Speaker 1: lot of time as nice that that female is out
- 1:36:57Speaker 1: of her work, out of the workforce, and not participating
- 1:36:59Speaker 1: in her career for then an extra two months longer
- 1:37:03Speaker 1: than that male is they don't say you have to
- 1:37:05Speaker 1: take it. That's that's true. You don't take any that's true.
- 1:37:09Speaker 1: Let's move on. I'm excited to get back to work.
- 1:37:12Speaker 1: I'm not a policy guy that I'm excited to get
- 1:37:16Speaker 1: back to work. But I tried to figure out. I
- 1:37:18Speaker 1: try to figure out who said that quote, just because
- 1:37:20Speaker 1: if you're good to know, because you like to say
- 1:37:22Speaker 1: it and throw it around. I can't find it. But
- 1:37:26Speaker 1: what this does tell me from doing this quick little
- 1:37:28Speaker 1: Google search of putting that in there, is that playing
- 1:37:31Speaker 1: or even just holding a guitar makes you sexy. The
- 1:37:35Speaker 1: top the top six articles are apparently the matter Apparently
- 1:37:41Speaker 1: this matters. Holding a guitar makes you sexy? Sexy mf
- 1:37:45Speaker 1: by Prince the Guitar's power of seduction. Men who play
- 1:37:50Speaker 1: guitar are instantly more attractive. It goes on and on.
- 1:37:53Speaker 1: Do you want me to tell you who told me
- 1:37:55Speaker 1: that quote? There's a writer name look him up? Does
- 1:37:58Speaker 1: a writer named Paget Howell? M hmmm part of him?
- 1:38:02Speaker 1: I act your Southerner. So the writer Paget Powell told
- 1:38:09Speaker 1: me that, and I think he was friendly with the
- 1:38:12Speaker 1: Lenyard skinnerd Fellers. He told me that story so it
- 1:38:18Speaker 1: might not be captured on the internet. Yeah, I think
- 1:38:21Speaker 1: I got that from you, but I butchered the quote. Okay,
- 1:38:26Speaker 1: you ready. I don't know. That's a tough one to follow,
- 1:38:31Speaker 1: but I'll give him my best for you guys. Um, well,
- 1:38:36Speaker 1: great year I had again, as I tend to have.
- 1:38:43Speaker 1: I can't remember the last time I had a bad year.
- 1:38:45Speaker 1: Because you're you're a half glass full exactly, You're nail
- 1:38:51Speaker 1: your nail in the quotes today have class bowl, you
- 1:38:56Speaker 1: only have half class always full. But I was born
- 1:39:01Speaker 1: with a half glass. I was gonna recount in his Uh,
- 1:39:04Speaker 1: who's my oldest daughter her first Latvian deer camp experience?
- 1:39:09Speaker 1: And what I learned from that? And Uh, what's interesting
- 1:39:13Speaker 1: about that is that I was just thinking as I
- 1:39:15Speaker 1: was gathering notes in my head, is that that is
- 1:39:17Speaker 1: The story starts about a year earlier when I was
- 1:39:22Speaker 1: back in Wisconsin for the rifle hunt after already being
- 1:39:24Speaker 1: there for a week archery hunting, and I was texting
- 1:39:26Speaker 1: with Steve and he's like, where are you? I said,
- 1:39:28Speaker 1: I mean Wisconsin rifle deer hunting. He's like again, So yeah,
- 1:39:32Speaker 1: he said, made sure to get to hunt a lot
- 1:39:34Speaker 1: without your kids. I'm like, yeah, well, I'm not sure.
- 1:39:39Speaker 1: I don't think that's what I said. Well, okay, what
- 1:39:42Speaker 1: did you say? I said, you get your kids with you. Okay,
- 1:39:45Speaker 1: you got your kids with you, Which is kind of
- 1:39:47Speaker 1: like you can say that same thing saying that you're
- 1:39:50Speaker 1: hunting without your kids because you're at the Latvian family Camp.
- 1:39:56Speaker 1: Uh are you're asking? So you thought that my kids
- 1:40:00Speaker 1: would be with me? And I thought there was some
- 1:40:02Speaker 1: talk of that, so well, I was talking at the
- 1:40:08Speaker 1: at the time I was, and I was told you,
- 1:40:10Speaker 1: I said, I don't know if it's a hundred percent
- 1:40:12Speaker 1: cool to have females in this camp. It's always been
- 1:40:16Speaker 1: a male camp. And the one instance I can remember
- 1:40:19Speaker 1: when a wife showed up it was and this was
- 1:40:22Speaker 1: I was a long time ago. I was like, I
- 1:40:24Speaker 1: remember there being some friction around this, and I later
- 1:40:28Speaker 1: found out that it wasn't because she was a female.
- 1:40:31Speaker 1: That she was there. Being a female is because there
- 1:40:34Speaker 1: are some other just drama amongst people like people like
- 1:40:39Speaker 1: to do and that's what causes So I had nothing
- 1:40:41Speaker 1: to do with her being But you read it one
- 1:40:43Speaker 1: way at that, Yeah, sure, I was, you know, in
- 1:40:45Speaker 1: my teens probably and uh so anyways, I asked if
- 1:40:48Speaker 1: I could bring my oldest daughter that last year and
- 1:40:53Speaker 1: everybody was like, yeah, for sure, bringer so it was
- 1:40:56Speaker 1: unanimously supported. Yeah, totally. And uh at the time, I
- 1:41:01Speaker 1: didn't think that I would have any sort of um,
- 1:41:05Speaker 1: you know, apprehension about it, but I did once. It
- 1:41:09Speaker 1: was like, as the trip was kind of coming up.
- 1:41:11Speaker 1: You know, it's no different than taking your wife out
- 1:41:14Speaker 1: on her first you know, hunter whatever, you start to
- 1:41:17Speaker 1: get this apprehension of like you want everything to go right,
- 1:41:21Speaker 1: you want the crew to accept who this new person
- 1:41:24Speaker 1: that you're bringing in when you want Iena to be like,
- 1:41:27Speaker 1: this is something I want to do the rest of
- 1:41:28Speaker 1: my life. Yea, pent so you're trying to make it great,
- 1:41:31Speaker 1: you know. So I bought like a thousand it was.
- 1:41:34Speaker 1: Of course, it hasn't been cold in Wisconsin for the
- 1:41:37Speaker 1: only day of rifle season since I don't know when,
- 1:41:40Speaker 1: and the forecast is like highs of sixteen Like oh boy,
- 1:41:45Speaker 1: so but like a thousand handwarmers, body warmers, told warmers.
- 1:41:50Speaker 1: My dad showed up with a blind had him get
- 1:41:52Speaker 1: me one of the buddy heaters, and uh, I've never
- 1:41:54Speaker 1: done that set up that works slick, so slick that iena. Um.
- 1:42:00Speaker 1: We would get to the blind and get in there
- 1:42:03Speaker 1: and get her pact full handwarmers and body warmers everywhere
- 1:42:06Speaker 1: and get the buddy heat or going. She was wearing
- 1:42:09Speaker 1: the first light sanctuary kit in like not even five minutes.
- 1:42:13Speaker 1: I'd look I'd be like, okay, cool, we're all setting.
- 1:42:15Speaker 1: I'd look over and she's sleeping. I don't know how
- 1:42:21Speaker 1: you could get so comfortable in one of those like
- 1:42:22Speaker 1: folding camp chairs, but yeah, she's snuggled right in and
- 1:42:25Speaker 1: there'd be a solid ninety minutes. I'm like, well, this
- 1:42:28Speaker 1: is great. The wind's right, it's very quiet. If a
- 1:42:30Speaker 1: deer comes by, we'll get a shot. Um. She didn't
- 1:42:35Speaker 1: get to see any deer the first morning because when
- 1:42:38Speaker 1: I'd see them, I'd be like, she'd be like, you know,
- 1:42:43Speaker 1: she'd there'd been barely any movement, no, no, no dear coming,
- 1:42:47Speaker 1: you know, and by the time she'd actually wake up,
- 1:42:49Speaker 1: you know, open her eyes, you know, they'd be long gone.
- 1:42:51Speaker 1: But she didn't get see any deer that day. Um.
- 1:42:56Speaker 1: But it was great because the we only hunted two days,
- 1:42:59Speaker 1: where there maybe two and a half days, and it
- 1:43:03Speaker 1: was great to see, Like the way everybody took care
- 1:43:07Speaker 1: of her, accepted her, you know, made her field part
- 1:43:10Speaker 1: of the group. And the way that my daughter was
- 1:43:13Speaker 1: able to just at eleven roll into you know, a
- 1:43:16Speaker 1: deer camp with I think we had twelve or thirteen
- 1:43:20Speaker 1: this year. You know, most she knew a couple of people,
- 1:43:23Speaker 1: my brother was there, my dad was there, but you know,
- 1:43:26Speaker 1: a do ten people that she's never met before and
- 1:43:29Speaker 1: just roll with the punches, you know, and be social
- 1:43:32Speaker 1: and be comfortable and chit chat with everybody. Um. She
- 1:43:38Speaker 1: enjoyed that part of it, the camaraderie as much as
- 1:43:42Speaker 1: she did you know, being out in the woods with me,
- 1:43:44Speaker 1: which was great to see, you know, and then go ahead,
- 1:43:47Speaker 1: which is a big part of the Wisconsin deer culture exactly. Yeah.
- 1:43:53Speaker 1: And that was gonna be a point I was gonna
- 1:43:55Speaker 1: bring up too, is I realized this year, with having
- 1:43:58Speaker 1: her there is how important that camp has been in
- 1:44:02Speaker 1: my life and that experience, you know, and being able
- 1:44:04Speaker 1: to go there not every year but off and on
- 1:44:07Speaker 1: for you know, coming on forty years. Um, it's a
- 1:44:10Speaker 1: pretty special deal. And you and you realize how many
- 1:44:13Speaker 1: people don't have that, you know, like how many people
- 1:44:16Speaker 1: haven't never even been to like a real deer camp
- 1:44:19Speaker 1: let alone for fifty years in a row, like some
- 1:44:21Speaker 1: of the people that you know go there have you know,
- 1:44:23Speaker 1: I mean there's a real connection there. And I think
- 1:44:25Speaker 1: that you know, those bonds and friendships are in forms people,
- 1:44:29Speaker 1: you know. I mean, it's certainly that camp is influence
- 1:44:32Speaker 1: who I am, you know, as a as a person. Um,
- 1:44:36Speaker 1: it was cool to have three generations of potelis Is
- 1:44:40Speaker 1: in one camp, you know, something I didn't you know,
- 1:44:43Speaker 1: think about beforehand, but then being there and seeing my
- 1:44:46Speaker 1: dad and me and my daughter, you know in a picture,
- 1:44:49Speaker 1: it was it was a cool thing to see. Um,
- 1:44:53Speaker 1: so great great weekend overall. Um, I guess I don't
- 1:44:59Speaker 1: think there's a one general takeaway or thing I'll learn
- 1:45:02Speaker 1: from it, but things that I'm reminded of that I
- 1:45:06Speaker 1: try to live this and but it's hard to always
- 1:45:08Speaker 1: remember because, like you say, it's easy to go on autopilot.
- 1:45:11Speaker 1: But you know, doing things that might make you feel
- 1:45:16Speaker 1: nervous or difficult or whatever, it might be hard. If
- 1:45:21Speaker 1: you just go and do them, you're gonna come out
- 1:45:23Speaker 1: either side, you know, a better person probably, you know,
- 1:45:27Speaker 1: whether it's getting up and doing a show or taking
- 1:45:29Speaker 1: your daughter into a you know, a camp full of
- 1:45:32Speaker 1: men where for me personally, it would be a lot
- 1:45:34Speaker 1: easier to go there without my kids hang out stress,
- 1:45:38Speaker 1: you know, not have that stress there and just be
- 1:45:41Speaker 1: doing the old guy thing and you know, drinking a
- 1:45:45Speaker 1: few extra beers whatever it might be. This is the
- 1:45:47Speaker 1: harder version, but then in hindsight, it's like definitely the
- 1:45:51Speaker 1: best version. You know, it could be the ass they are,
- 1:45:57Speaker 1: but that brings up like the other sort of you know,
- 1:46:00Speaker 1: take away from it, and it's, uh, the reap what
- 1:46:05Speaker 1: you So, it's like we've done you're experiencing it too.
- 1:46:09Speaker 1: I think Matt is finally getting there where he's not
- 1:46:12Speaker 1: so much of paying the butt. My girls have really
- 1:46:15Speaker 1: grown out of that completely. Oh yeah, my kids are
- 1:46:17Speaker 1: all rational now. It's fun. It's paying the butt. It's
- 1:46:20Speaker 1: like paying the button. It's a lot of wet, muddy stuff,
- 1:46:23Speaker 1: you know, but it's great. I mean, it's just there's
- 1:46:27Speaker 1: no relax. There's no relax. Still isn't no relax. Rea, Well,
- 1:46:32Speaker 1: I'm starting to like I'm starting to reap a little
- 1:46:34Speaker 1: bit of relax and just get to enjoy their company
- 1:46:37Speaker 1: and then enjoy and just see like all that time
- 1:46:41Speaker 1: and effort that we put into which hasn't when you
- 1:46:43Speaker 1: look back at now, when you're in the mix of it,
- 1:46:45Speaker 1: you're like, oh my god, it's never gonna end. Now
- 1:46:47Speaker 1: looking back on it, you wish you had more years
- 1:46:49Speaker 1: doing it, because it's over and those ten years have
- 1:46:52Speaker 1: flown by. You know that we put all this effort
- 1:46:55Speaker 1: into it, and you've sort of now created these you know,
- 1:46:59Speaker 1: not quite adult humans, but getting there, and uh, they
- 1:47:02Speaker 1: are who they are, you know, and so it's it's
- 1:47:05Speaker 1: it's cool to sit back and go, oh, yeah, it
- 1:47:08Speaker 1: all it worked. You know. I'm glad we spent more
- 1:47:11Speaker 1: time reading and less time on tablets. And I'm glad
- 1:47:15Speaker 1: that we said no so many times and taught him
- 1:47:18Speaker 1: to be polite and taught them to talk to adults
- 1:47:21Speaker 1: or whatever it might be, just general raising adults. Um.
- 1:47:26Speaker 1: I heard a quote the other day, I can't remember
- 1:47:28Speaker 1: who said it. She said, I never raised any kids,
- 1:47:30Speaker 1: I was raising adults. I like that, thinking you're not
- 1:47:34Speaker 1: really raising kids, right. I think one of the and
- 1:47:37Speaker 1: that thing, I think one of the best strategies I've had,
- 1:47:41Speaker 1: like one of the things that we've done that that
- 1:47:43Speaker 1: paid off. The best is I always make my kids
- 1:47:45Speaker 1: go up and shake people's hands, introduced themselves. Always huge impact.
- 1:47:52Speaker 1: That doesn't come naturally. No, it doesn't know they're going
- 1:47:55Speaker 1: to be able to learn to go in and shake
- 1:47:56Speaker 1: someone's hand and say what their name is and asking
- 1:47:58Speaker 1: what their name is. Yeah, you know these not like
- 1:48:00Speaker 1: it now, they just do it. Yeah, are they going
- 1:48:02Speaker 1: to do yourself? No, I've been there plenty of times
- 1:48:05Speaker 1: for that. When you do that with your kids, and uh,
- 1:48:09Speaker 1: I feel nervous for the kids. You're I gotta go
- 1:48:17Speaker 1: back for a set. You're still not like relaxing at all. No, No,
- 1:48:22Speaker 1: with all three when they're all to gather, all three
- 1:48:25Speaker 1: of them know, yes, well what day it was? Sunday?
- 1:48:27Speaker 1: We got a good Christmas tree okay, and we did
- 1:48:30Speaker 1: like I said, we did an extreme Christmas tree hunt.
- 1:48:33Speaker 1: We saw trees never before seen by man, trophies trophy. However,
- 1:48:39Speaker 1: I don't the gear management. I don't understand. Yeah, well yeah,
- 1:48:44Speaker 1: I mean like this super slick hillside covered in powder
- 1:48:50Speaker 1: snow and they're sliding down and we haven't started hunting
- 1:48:54Speaker 1: trees yet. If you're like, you're not allowed to have
- 1:48:57Speaker 1: while we're out now where this is gonna land. I
- 1:49:01Speaker 1: know what it's gonna land. I know that one's gonna
- 1:49:02Speaker 1: be crying because he's cold. Because he's cold and he
- 1:49:08Speaker 1: got Michael. I just want to give him my gloves.
- 1:49:11Speaker 1: Then I just want to know my hands are cold.
- 1:49:15Speaker 1: You're supposed to bring extra hats and neckid you honest,
- 1:49:18Speaker 1: I'm starting to get to the relaxation stage a little bit. Man,
- 1:49:21Speaker 1: You'll get there, don't worry. I love it. There's nothing
- 1:49:24Speaker 1: to rather do. It's the only time I don't feel
- 1:49:26Speaker 1: guilty in my life because you're with your kids. Because
- 1:49:30Speaker 1: I'm like, I'm doing all the things I'm supposed to do.
- 1:49:32Speaker 1: I'm not wasting my life. I'm doing what I want
- 1:49:34Speaker 1: to do, and then they're there, so I'm not being
- 1:49:36Speaker 1: like a bad dad. It's the only time I'm happy.
- 1:49:39Speaker 1: I was kind. I just want to drop one more
- 1:49:41Speaker 1: thing because axcid of funny. I was over over analyzing
- 1:49:45Speaker 1: the hunting because I was trying to get us success,
- 1:49:48Speaker 1: you know, and I wanted I had to, you know,
- 1:49:50Speaker 1: see see a kill, and which brings up another thing
- 1:49:55Speaker 1: with two because I'm like, well, you know, I'm only
- 1:49:58Speaker 1: gonna shoot like a you know nice buck know, and
- 1:50:00Speaker 1: should we shoot a deal or not? We can go
- 1:50:01Speaker 1: back to Montana and shoot does And I hadn't really
- 1:50:04Speaker 1: asked her, but on the last evening when we're like
- 1:50:07Speaker 1: watching some deer run around in front of her, She's like,
- 1:50:09Speaker 1: I'd be happy if you shot anything. And of course
- 1:50:11Speaker 1: then I didn't have another opportunity, and so whatever. She
- 1:50:15Speaker 1: she wasn't bummed out about it. But as we're hunting along,
- 1:50:18Speaker 1: I'm trying to include her in the process. Where do
- 1:50:22Speaker 1: you think we should go? Did you like that spot
- 1:50:23Speaker 1: where we were yesterday morning? You know, the wind's doing this,
- 1:50:26Speaker 1: the deer should be better at this. I'm just like, hey,
- 1:50:28Speaker 1: do you have any input at all? Her answer every
- 1:50:31Speaker 1: single time is there gonna be action there. Let's go
- 1:50:34Speaker 1: where the action, don't I'm like, and it did hit me.
- 1:50:41Speaker 1: I'm like, that's right, keep it simple, stupid, just like,
- 1:50:44Speaker 1: go where the action is. And we did. We literally
- 1:50:47Speaker 1: went to the spot where, even though someone had already
- 1:50:49Speaker 1: shot a buck out of there, there was a bunch
- 1:50:52Speaker 1: of tracks in that zone. People had seen deer in there,
- 1:50:56Speaker 1: like the cameras had picked up a you know, a
- 1:50:57Speaker 1: few pictures of deer, and we went there in old
- 1:51:01Speaker 1: we got to watch two bucks fight and another one
- 1:51:04Speaker 1: messing around, and they all chased one doll around for
- 1:51:07Speaker 1: like thirty minutes. It's quite the wildlife encounter. You know
- 1:51:10Speaker 1: what's good? Yeah, there you go. There's my uh advice
- 1:51:15Speaker 1: or three go where the action is. Yeah, I like that,
- 1:51:19Speaker 1: or be a good dad too. Here's here's my thing.
- 1:51:23Speaker 1: It's not that monumental, but just as something that stays
- 1:51:25Speaker 1: in my head early and let me back up, let
- 1:51:28Speaker 1: me back up. In Michigan, I was I like to
- 1:51:32Speaker 1: trap a whole bunch growing up, and um was real
- 1:51:34Speaker 1: heavy duty and new I thought that's all I was
- 1:51:36Speaker 1: gonna do for a living. And you were allowed to
- 1:51:39Speaker 1: catch a bobcat and quite a ways, yeah, our drive
- 1:51:43Speaker 1: had you had to go about an hour hour and
- 1:51:44Speaker 1: a half north where you're allowed a bobcat, and um,
- 1:51:49Speaker 1: I never did it because those Michigan bobcasts are not
- 1:51:54Speaker 1: valuable at all. So like bobcats in the high like
- 1:51:58Speaker 1: high planes bobcats or you know, great Basin bobcats they
- 1:52:02Speaker 1: might be like five six hundred bucks, they're like fifteen
- 1:52:04Speaker 1: dollars in Michigan. They don't have the white belly there's
- 1:52:07Speaker 1: dingy um. So never could justify because I would just
- 1:52:11Speaker 1: catch stuff to sell it and it wasn't valuable. One
- 1:52:15Speaker 1: time though I was this most have been in ninety four.
- 1:52:20Speaker 1: I think I would go up to Macosta County, a
- 1:52:25Speaker 1: big rap is Michigan. We trapped beaver through the ice
- 1:52:28Speaker 1: after everything froze up so late December January, trapped muskrats
- 1:52:34Speaker 1: and beaver through the ice. And I was on this
- 1:52:37Speaker 1: big marsh and there's all these beaver lodges, three or
- 1:52:40Speaker 1: four beaver lodges through this big marsh in one day
- 1:52:45Speaker 1: walking along where I had sets, and this bobcat had
- 1:52:50Speaker 1: walked from lodge to lodge like on our tracks. And
- 1:52:53Speaker 1: I had laid a beaver down in the ice. And
- 1:52:55Speaker 1: when something drowns, it will bleed out its nose a
- 1:52:57Speaker 1: little bit. I had laid a beaver around the ice,
- 1:53:00Speaker 1: and it had left a little blood patch that bobcat
- 1:53:04Speaker 1: had kind of like walked around smelling that blood patch.
- 1:53:09Speaker 1: And uh, I thought from then on always about how
- 1:53:14Speaker 1: like it just seemed mysterious. I was wanting to catch
- 1:53:16Speaker 1: a bobcat. And then I promptly moved away, left left
- 1:53:21Speaker 1: the area. Thought and thought, thought, about it, and last
- 1:53:24Speaker 1: year right in January trying to think. No, I can't
- 1:53:28Speaker 1: remember December January. Either way, it went out and spent
- 1:53:31Speaker 1: a week trying to catch a bobcat for like seven days.
- 1:53:37Speaker 1: I didn't catch one. Then last year in January, I
- 1:53:42Speaker 1: caught one on accident in a Martin set. So he
- 1:53:49Speaker 1: got caught one of my Martin boxes and I didn't
- 1:53:52Speaker 1: know it. I get into my Martin box and the
- 1:53:54Speaker 1: traps out, all kinds of branches are broken, and there's
- 1:53:58Speaker 1: white fur in the trap, and am I try to think,
- 1:54:03Speaker 1: what the hell would have done that, you know? And
- 1:54:04Speaker 1: I thought maybe like a weasel and something to ate it.
- 1:54:07Speaker 1: But there's no blood, there's no nothing, And I just
- 1:54:09Speaker 1: wrote it off like a mystery you'll never solve. I
- 1:54:11Speaker 1: go to the next Martin box fifty yards away in
- 1:54:13Speaker 1: the area is dead and your door nill. He like
- 1:54:16Speaker 1: crammed his hand his head, like he had to squeeze
- 1:54:20Speaker 1: his head into that thing, gets caught. Um, how unsatisfying
- 1:54:27Speaker 1: to catch him by accident. I'm glad, I was glad.
- 1:54:32Speaker 1: I'm glad I got him. I got him registered. He's
- 1:54:34Speaker 1: hanging to my office. But um, like the role of
- 1:54:37Speaker 1: luck and intention man so unsatisfying. I didn't even kind
- 1:54:44Speaker 1: of scratch the itch. Are you it's not getting the bobcat? Yeah,
- 1:54:53Speaker 1: it's on whose terms you're you know what I mean? Yeah? Completely,
- 1:55:02Speaker 1: you know, kind of like the same way you used
- 1:55:04Speaker 1: to say, like getting a something that it's been collared,
- 1:55:07Speaker 1: that somebody's already gotten it before on accident? Are you
- 1:55:12Speaker 1: gonna get back at the bob yea? On purpose? It's
- 1:55:17Speaker 1: like it never happened, but as it trap, I was glad.
- 1:55:20Speaker 1: I was like, oh, you know, but no I wasn't.
- 1:55:22Speaker 1: It was like it was honestly, it was the most
- 1:55:24Speaker 1: mixed It was the most mixed emotion feeling. It was
- 1:55:27Speaker 1: more like I was watching it happened to someone else.
- 1:55:30Speaker 1: But as a trapper, I've been thinking about that all years.
- 1:55:35Speaker 1: But as a trapper, you it's like bound happened that bycatch.
- 1:55:40Speaker 1: But it's like there's certain things that I just was
- 1:55:42Speaker 1: there's a thing I wanted to do and haven't done it,
- 1:55:44Speaker 1: and then I did it on an accident. It just
- 1:55:46Speaker 1: kills me. Chest A wold be kind of like if
- 1:55:48Speaker 1: you're at fishing for perch nine ten inch perch and
- 1:55:52Speaker 1: shipped into a ten pound walley Yeah, like you're doing
- 1:55:55Speaker 1: the dumbest thing in the world, you're doing the least
- 1:55:57Speaker 1: Walleye thing in the world, and you catch a state
- 1:56:01Speaker 1: record Walleye and then don't you just experience that as
- 1:56:04Speaker 1: a really nice surprise. I've been trying for a year.
- 1:56:09Speaker 1: I still can't get there. When I walk I walk
- 1:56:13Speaker 1: out of my office, I see that Bob Kat hanging there.
- 1:56:16Speaker 1: You think at a point of just be glee. I
- 1:56:18Speaker 1: see that Bob Kat hanging there, and I still stings me.
- 1:56:22Speaker 1: A year later, I totally get that. That makes sense. Yeah,
- 1:56:26Speaker 1: I'm glad I got it. I don't want it to
- 1:56:28Speaker 1: go away. I'm glad I got it every single time
- 1:56:32Speaker 1: I look at it. It's not a you know, it's
- 1:56:36Speaker 1: like you know on accident Blind Squirrel to make you
- 1:56:41Speaker 1: be like a suck at Bobcat track. No, it just
- 1:56:44Speaker 1: it's like, um, yeah, but you know what, it gave
- 1:56:47Speaker 1: you a good story, and you got a good story
- 1:56:50Speaker 1: out of the deal. I feel like it's how people
- 1:56:52Speaker 1: to inherit a lot of money feel when they look
- 1:56:55Speaker 1: like if you made a lot of money through entrepreneurial
- 1:56:58Speaker 1: ship and risk, you're looking at big fat bank account.
- 1:57:02Speaker 1: You're probably like, hell, yeah you did that. But if
- 1:57:05Speaker 1: you like, if you just got it like from your grandpa,
- 1:57:08Speaker 1: you know, like generational, Well, yeah, you're probably looking at
- 1:57:10Speaker 1: any like and then you look at that. Yeah you
- 1:57:12Speaker 1: don't look at it. You're not like yeah, yeah, you're
- 1:57:16Speaker 1: like yeah, you know kind of felt I when you
- 1:57:19Speaker 1: set that trap. Bobcats were the first thing from your mind, right,
- 1:57:24Speaker 1: you know, I didn't think a bobcat could fit his head, right,
- 1:57:27Speaker 1: So I get it. I don't think he thought he's
- 1:57:28Speaker 1: gonna fit his head. And if you were playing like
- 1:57:30Speaker 1: a one on one golf game with Tiger Woods and
- 1:57:32Speaker 1: it was neck and neck up until the end, and
- 1:57:34Speaker 1: then Tiger was just swings and misses and lands on
- 1:57:36Speaker 1: his ass and ships his pants, and you're like, oh,
- 1:57:38Speaker 1: I guess I win. But like Tiger Woods probably shouldn't
- 1:57:41Speaker 1: have fallen down or he had a stroke and you
- 1:57:45Speaker 1: beat him. It's not a stroke like a stroke like
- 1:57:47Speaker 1: a swing. Yeah, yeah, I got it. It's like you
- 1:57:49Speaker 1: didn't sink the long puppet he three putted. Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:57:52Speaker 1: It still kills me every time I look at him.
- 1:57:53Speaker 1: I'm glad I got him. He's beautiful. Yeah, but it's
- 1:57:56Speaker 1: not and I'm saying, we're doing a fundraiser dinner, and
- 1:57:58Speaker 1: I'm gonna, um, We're doing in a fundraiser dinner, and
- 1:58:01Speaker 1: I'm cooking that bobcat up I got was too little,
- 1:58:04Speaker 1: two little legs and throws up. Ye had four safe.
- 1:58:10Speaker 1: I did some gumbo with my bobcat. It was delicious,
- 1:58:14Speaker 1: is it? That's another cool thing about bobcats, Like you
- 1:58:17Speaker 1: catch kyo. You know, I've I've learned my lesson. I'm
- 1:58:20Speaker 1: eating kyos. But bobcats people, people enjoy them. Oh yeah,
- 1:58:24Speaker 1: they're tasty. Man, Gumbo sounds good right about now. There's
- 1:58:28Speaker 1: the season. So I'm trying to take a word that
- 1:58:29Speaker 1: leaves people confused. If you're going after something and it
- 1:58:36Speaker 1: doesn't work out the way you plan, just keep on trucking. Yeah,
- 1:58:40Speaker 1: be um, you know what it is. Don't take credit
- 1:58:44Speaker 1: for something you didn't do. Take care of your daughter,
- 1:58:50Speaker 1: but when lots of rock and roll, but when luck
- 1:58:52Speaker 1: shines upon you. And if you take your wife hunt
- 1:58:58Speaker 1: and don't freak out on her, it's m h. And
- 1:59:05Speaker 1: make your kids always make your kids feel real awkward.
- 1:59:07Speaker 1: Make him go, introduce them cells to people. Calm down,
- 1:59:10Speaker 1: Calm down, out of the room to just make him
- 1:59:12Speaker 1: come downstairs, just introduce them cells to someone. It'll pay off.
- 1:59:15Speaker 1: I'm just it'll play off. I'm Steve. I'm just picturing
- 1:59:18Speaker 1: Matt doing that though, like kind of like regretting. Like
- 1:59:22Speaker 1: he gets in there, he gets it done. Man, he
- 1:59:23Speaker 1: does a good job. Just fight two. Someone rings the
- 1:59:27Speaker 1: doorbell one of the kids lives, run over where they
- 1:59:29Speaker 1: can see, and I'll be watching from this, going to
- 1:59:31Speaker 1: just stand there looking out. I'm like, well, now what happens?
- 1:59:40Speaker 1: You go and bite them in, you know. It's kind
- 1:59:43Speaker 1: of like the is this the Ranella household? No? Yeah,
- 1:59:51Speaker 1: they race over and look at the person through the window.
- 1:59:56Speaker 1: Happy New Year. I'm trying to think of one of
- 1:59:59Speaker 1: legiti really like what I'm gonna do. As much as
- 2:00:01Speaker 1: I hate resolutions, I'm trying to think what I'm legitimately
- 2:00:04Speaker 1: gonna do. Catch a bob cat. I mean, like like
- 2:00:08Speaker 1: in terms of personal behavior, I'm gonna trying not to
- 2:00:11Speaker 1: freak out of my kids as much. Mm hmm. That's
- 2:00:15Speaker 1: a good one. Every year, hard, hard, hard when you're
- 2:00:20Speaker 1: trying to freak out on him as much. My dad
- 2:00:22Speaker 1: freaked out him me all the time. It's like in
- 2:00:24Speaker 1: my blood. It's gonna be a good year. It's gonna
- 2:00:28Speaker 1: be a good year. Mm hmm. Make it a good year.
- 2:00:33Speaker 1: There you go with Chester. Alright, but happy happy New year, ma'am.
- 2:00:37Speaker 1: Don't take credit for something you didn't do. Thanks, but
- 2:00:40Speaker 1: get a tanned Definitely get a be appreciative set
