- 0:00Chapter 9 of Isaiah, dear Lord, please be with us as we read
- 0:05through this chapter and help us with wisdom, insight, knowledge,
- 0:12revelation from the Holy Spirit that so we can understand and
- 0:17apply the word that you've given to your prophet Isaiah and learn
- 0:22from it. We ask for this in Jesus name,
- 0:25Amen. Chapter 9 of Isaiah.
- 0:29Nevertheless, there will be no more gloom for those who were in
- 0:34distress. In the past He humbled the land
- 0:37of Zebulun and the land of Naftali, but in the future He
- 0:41will honour Galilee and the nations by the way of the sea
- 0:46beyond the Jordan, the people walking in darkness have seen a
- 0:51great light on those living in the land of deep darkness.
- 0:55A light has dawned. You have enlarged the nation and
- 1:00increased their joy. They rejoice before you as
- 1:04people rejoice at the harvest, as warriors rejoice when
- 1:10dividing the plunder. For as in the day of Midian's
- 1:14defeat, you have shattered the yoke that burdens them, the bar
- 1:19across their shoulders, the rod of their oppressor, every
- 1:23warrior's boot used in battle, and every garment rolled in
- 1:28blood will be destined for burning, will be fuel for the
- 1:33fire. For to us a child is born, to us
- 1:38a son is given, and the government will be on his
- 1:42shoulders, and he will be called wonderful counsellor, mighty
- 1:46God, everlasting Father, Prince of Peace, of the greatness of
- 1:50his government and peace there will be no end.
- 1:54He will reign on David's throne and over His Kingdom,
- 1:59establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness
- 2:03from that time on and forever, the seal of the Lord Almighty
- 2:10will accomplish this. OK, so that first part, there is
- 2:16a lot about this is the future. This to me sounds like it's more
- 2:22end time related because it says from this time and forever.
- 2:26So that means it'll never change once this happens.
- 2:29Well, the only time that's going to happen is when Jesus returns.
- 2:32So this is again about end times and it's about Jesus.
- 2:38So starting with some clues in here, it says in verse three,
- 2:45you have enlarged the nation. Well, who it says you so God.
- 2:51So Jesus, right when Jesus comes back, he is going to rule from
- 2:56Jerusalem and the territory is going to be greatly expanded.
- 3:00He is going to be the ruler of everything, everything.
- 3:05When he returns after the wrath, he's taking over the Kingdom on
- 3:09earth for 1000 years. So Jesus will be reigning, Yes,
- 3:13He will have enlarged the nation.
- 3:15That's when everything gets really big.
- 3:18Obviously, God gave Israel certain boundaries.
- 3:21Well, these are going to go outside of that.
- 3:24And then it says they rejoice before you as people rejoice at
- 3:28the harvest. When I read that, I thought the
- 3:31harvest of people when there is the gathering of the people that
- 3:35Jesus referred to many times when he talked about the the
- 3:39last days and what would happen. Like when he's coming in on the
- 3:42clouds and he sends out his angels with the sound of a
- 3:46trumpet and they gather his people.
- 3:48So it says they rejoice before you as people rejoice at the
- 3:53harvest. Very often the gathering of
- 3:55people are talked about as a harvest.
- 3:58There's the wheat and the tares that are talked about.
- 4:01There is the grape harvest. I believe those might be two
- 4:05different harvests and not the same harvest because the, the,
- 4:11the grape harvest is more towards the end where there's
- 4:16like the wrath because I believe that and maybe it happens at the
- 4:22same time, I'm not sure. But there's some, it's like the
- 4:26dividing of the sheep and the goats that you just talked
- 4:29about, that some will be gathered and quote wheat and
- 4:34tear stored in the barn and the others will be bound together
- 4:40and saved for burning. So there's some that will be
- 4:44like maybe this harvest is the exact same thing and it's just
- 4:47described in two different ways. When you get into the end times
- 4:51about the wheat and the tares, like let them grow up together
- 4:55because you won't know until the harvest time which are what you
- 4:58know, which ones are the wheat, which is the good, the ones who
- 5:01have turned to God and which are the the tares, the one that the
- 5:05devil or Satan has sown the seeds where they are not
- 5:08followers, they're not believers and they will be destroyed and
- 5:12they will be bound and destroyed.
- 5:15And then you get into the grape harvest, which is in the Book of
- 5:18Revelation. And that talks about first
- 5:21there's multiple angels that come out and the first Angel
- 5:25gathers the grapes because they're ready for harvest.
- 5:27They're ripe. And then another Angel comes
- 5:30out, a separate Angel comes out and gathers what's remaining.
- 5:35And then those go into the wine. So, and to me, it very much
- 5:41sounds like in both scenarios, both parable, well, not one's a
- 5:45parable that Jesus told. The other one is a through a
- 5:47vision that John saw in Revelation.
- 5:51So both of those talk about gathering of people and both are
- 5:56kind of gathered. There's another parable that
- 5:59Jesus talks about like 2 in the field, one will be taken and
- 6:021:00 will be left. So the the taken ones, there's
- 6:08people that describe, I guess I believe that they will the ones
- 6:16that are taken like the wheat and the tares, there are some
- 6:20that are first, there are some that are bound so they cannot
- 6:24go, but the others are taken into the barn.
- 6:28So I think some place of shelter is what that is referring to.
- 6:33And again, when they talk about the, the two that will be, you
- 6:38know, grinding at the mill, one will be taken and 1:00 will be
- 6:41left. Well, the one that's taken is
- 6:44the one who's put into God's protection.
- 6:46The other one would be left for the wrath of God.
- 6:49The one who hasn't prepared, just like the 10 virgins, half
- 6:53of them had their oil and they were prepared.
- 6:56The oil being anointed by the Holy Spirit because Jesus said
- 7:00that no one can enter the Kingdom of God unless you've
- 7:03been born again. So you have to be born of the
- 7:05Spirit. And the spirit is symbolic of
- 7:08the oil, or I mean the oil is symbolic of the spirit.
- 7:12So people who do not have the Holy Spirit, who are not living
- 7:16the life that Jesus says, they might profess to be a Christian,
- 7:20but if it hasn't changed their life, then they're probably not
- 7:24going to be in that group of people.
- 7:26They'll probably have to go through the wrath of God.
- 7:28So it's, it's a changed life. The Holy Spirit changes life.
- 7:31So if there has not been change in a person's life, life since
- 7:35the time they were saved, are they accepted or claimed to have
- 7:38received the Holy Spirit if they are not getting more and more
- 7:42like Jesus, there's a concern there.
- 7:45And if anybody is listening to this and says, well, I'm not
- 7:49getting more and more like Jesus and I believe that I'm saved,
- 7:53seek God about it and make sure like there should be some signs
- 7:58of the Holy Spirit in your life. If you have the Holy Spirit, if
- 8:01you are born again, you should reflect what is listed in
- 8:06Galatians chapter 5. It talks about people who live
- 8:09worldly and, and it it says basically those are going to be
- 8:13destroyed. They will not enter the Kingdom
- 8:15of God. So if you're living like that,
- 8:18then that's a warning. And then it talks about the
- 8:21fruit of the Spirit and it talks about the qualities, you know,
- 8:24joy, peace, patience, kindness, endurance, forgiveness.
- 8:32There's nine of them and I don't have them memorized yet.
- 8:35But if you don't see any of that in your life now, people don't
- 8:39instantly change when they receive the Holy Spirit.
- 8:43It some do instantly change of some things, but it's really a
- 8:48gradual process. So if you are experiencing A
- 8:52gradual process and getting closer and closer to Jesus and
- 8:56your life is changing, but you still have some things that you
- 8:58need to work out, that's not the same thing.
- 9:01That's not what I'm talking about.
- 9:03I'm talking about someone who professes to be a Christian, but
- 9:06they keep on living the way they've always lived.
- 9:08They've had zero change in their life and they have no desire to
- 9:11either. So there's going to be, you
- 9:14won't know the difference because they may be going to
- 9:16church all the time. They may be quoting scripture to
- 9:20you. They have they have the
- 9:22knowledge, but they don't have the wisdom.
- 9:25My people are destroyed for a lack of knowledge.
- 9:29If you don't have, if you don't apply knowledge, which wisdom is
- 9:34the apply knowledge. If you don't apply it to your
- 9:37life and do something with it, it's useless.
- 9:41It's just useless. Think about that and anything
- 9:44else that you learn. If you don't apply something
- 9:46that you learned to your life, it's wasted.
- 9:49It's of no benefit. Sure, it's in your head, but
- 9:51what good is that? It does nothing for you.
- 9:54The same thing is true of the Bible.
- 9:56If you're not applying what you're hearing, then there's
- 10:00something to be concerned about. And I just say this because, you
- 10:03know, the time is short and we never know when Jesus will, when
- 10:09the Father will decide to send Jesus back.
- 10:13And so people really need to be prepared because there's a lot
- 10:16of stuff happening in the world that lines up with Bible
- 10:20prophecy. So it's not a time to be casual
- 10:23with your relationship. Lukewarm Christians.
- 10:27Those are people who profess to be Christians, but they don't
- 10:30live it out. If you're not living out the way
- 10:33that God says, if there's something that you know that
- 10:35you're doing that is not in agreement with the way God said
- 10:39things should be, address it and pray to God about it and ask for
- 10:43the Holy Spirit to help you overcome it.
- 10:46The power, grace is the power of the Holy Spirit to overcome sin.
- 10:51You don't just let it go and just use as it as an excuse.
- 10:54Oh, I'm covered. That's not the way Scripture
- 10:56reads. So there's a lot of churches
- 10:59that teach that kind of stuff. And I, I'm speaking in this
- 11:02podcast because churches are not doing it.
- 11:06And I'm concerned about people. I'm concerned about people's
- 11:08future because they're not hearing the truth.
- 11:11And there's others too who are doing the same thing.
- 11:14I see other Christians who are doing this too, unfortunately.
- 11:17It's sad that there aren't a lot of churches that are giving
- 11:19people these messages. So, OK, so anyway, going back to
- 11:25Scripture, so it says you have shattered the yoke that burdens
- 11:30them. Well, Jesus is going to be the
- 11:32one who returns and shatters the yoke.
- 11:35Finally, the yoke of slavery that is on his people.
- 11:40And then it says every warrior's boot used in battle and every
- 11:45garment rolled in blood will be destined for burning, will be
- 11:49the fuel for the fire. This is talking about eternal
- 11:52judgement that destined for burning and the fuel for the
- 11:58fire. That's the ultimate the end.
- 12:01After judgement, people go into the lake of burning fire.
- 12:06So that is the ones the ones who have rejected God.
- 12:10That's the ultimate outcome of but as long as we are living, we
- 12:16have the ability to make a choice, to ask for forgiveness
- 12:23when we're really sincere about it and to be, I mean, Jesus said
- 12:28repent. That means turn away from your
- 12:31sin. Stop your sin and don't just try
- 12:35it on your own. Ask Jesus for the Holy Spirit to
- 12:38help with overcoming your sin. Because that's something that
- 12:43people don't. I guess churches don't stress
- 12:45that enough too. It's the work of the Holy Spirit
- 12:48that helps us change our lives. But because God gave us free
- 12:52will, we need to make it known that we want that because God's
- 12:57not going to force anything. He always gives us a choice.
- 13:01He puts it in front of us. He's he gives us an invitation
- 13:04and it's up to us to accept it. Jesus even told parables about
- 13:08that, about this invitation to a wedding banquet.
- 13:11And some say, oh, you know, I just got married or I've got to
- 13:14do this or, you know, they give all these excuses, which is what
- 13:18people do in life. I know I did it too.
- 13:20And thank God I didn't die before I made that decision.
- 13:23So to, you know, to repent and not be a hypocrite, not live one
- 13:29life, say I'm one thing, but act another way.
- 13:32And so I made a commitment to God about doing that.
- 13:36And I got baptized because Jesus said repent and be baptized.
- 13:39And that's what the disciples said.
- 13:42So that's what we need to do. And then after you've been not
- 13:46after, I mean, at some point there's different sequences of
- 13:49events, honestly, because some people receive the Holy Spirit
- 13:52before they got baptized, but the baptized baptism is a is for
- 14:00forgiveness of sins is what that's what I understand.
- 14:04It's the repentance and forgiveness of sins.
- 14:07And the Holy Spirit can be given at the time of baptism.
- 14:11The Holy Spirit can be given before or the Holy Spirit can be
- 14:14given afterwards. So the Bible shows examples of
- 14:18each one of those things. And so one thing doesn't
- 14:22necessarily tie into the other anyway.
- 14:27It's so important to receive the Holy Spirit because that is your
- 14:31power, but it's also something you don't go to God.
- 14:35There was someone who wanted to harness that power so he could
- 14:40make money. And they, the disciples, this is
- 14:43in the book of Acts. The disciples rebuked him and
- 14:48they said you, you know, you better ask for forgiveness from
- 14:50the Lord for that because you are not going to have the Holy
- 14:53Spirit because his motives were inappropriate and that God knows
- 14:59our motives. We can maybe fool human beings
- 15:02about our sincere intentions. We can make that stuff up and
- 15:06get people to believe us, deceive other people.
- 15:09But we don't do that with God. And God decides if somebody
- 15:14receives the Holy Spirit. So it takes somebody who is
- 15:17humble themselves, somebody who can ask for help because God
- 15:23hates pride. So if you're still thinking I
- 15:26can do it on my own and I don't need any help, then you're in a
- 15:30prideful condition and you're not going to receive the Holy
- 15:34Spirit in that condition. That condition needs to change.
- 15:38And sometimes that's when really bad things happen to people to
- 15:42humble them so that they will turn to God because ultimately
- 15:47he wants to turn it into something good.
- 15:49Because he does love us. He's not trying to.
- 15:53He doesn't get joy out of sending judgement at all.
- 15:59He'd prefer that we accept him and love him back.
- 16:03But he is a God of righteousness.
- 16:06He is a God of justice and that will be the outcome in
- 16:10everyone's life. Everyone is going to be put into
- 16:16whatever category they are with God.
- 16:19It's either, you know, the, it's like the metaphorical sheep and
- 16:23goats, like either you're a follower of Jesus, you've
- 16:27accepted him or you haven't. And God is the one who is
- 16:31eventually going to had the final say in terms of justice
- 16:37that will be given to everyone. So then the other part of that's
- 16:43definitely absolutely Jesus is versus and it's not like a
- 16:48question like the others could be, you know, application of
- 16:52what I'm reading, but here is verse 6 for to us, a child is
- 16:58born to us, a son is given like God gave his only son who was
- 17:05conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit.
- 17:08That's why he was not the same as every human being on earth.
- 17:15He was different because he was conceived by the Holy Spirit and
- 17:20the government will be on his shoulders.
- 17:22That will be Jesus because when he returns, he will be the ruler
- 17:27of all nations. He will be in charge of
- 17:29everything. This is during the Millennium,
- 17:31and he will be called wonderful counselor, mighty God,
- 17:36everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
- 17:40Look at all those titles of Jesus, of the greatness of his
- 17:47government and peace. There will be no end.
- 17:50He will reign on David's throne now.
- 17:54He's from the tribe of Judah, which and David was in that same
- 18:00tribe. He is a descendant of David's.
- 18:02He will reign on David's throne and over his Kingdom,
- 18:05establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness
- 18:09from that time on and forever. Once Jesus returns, the Kingdom
- 18:14will never be taken away from him again.
- 18:17It'll be forever. The zeal of the Lord Almighty
- 18:22will accomplish this. That's the only thing that's
- 18:24going to happen. It's going to be by the power of
- 18:26God that this happens. Now it continues in verse 8.
- 18:31The Lord has sent a message against Jacob.
- 18:35It will fall on Israel. All the people will know it,
- 18:41Ephraim and the inhabitants of Samaria, who say with pride and
- 18:45arrogance of heart. The bricks have fallen down, but
- 18:48we will rebuild with dressed stone.
- 18:52The fig trees have been felled, but we will replace them with
- 18:55Cedars. But the Lord has strengthened
- 18:58Resin's foes against them and has spurred their enemies on.
- 19:03So this is back in the north, the northern tribe of Israel
- 19:09that this was spoken out, this was spoken of by Isaiah about
- 19:15that time that they were in because the Lord was bringing
- 19:20punishment on them from resin from it's, you know, that he was
- 19:23the leader of Syria or Aram at the time.
- 19:27So it says our mean, our means from air, means from the east
- 19:32and the Philistines from the West have devoured Israel with
- 19:36open mouth. Now we have to remember the land
- 19:39of the Philistines is the current land of Gaza.
- 19:42So we're talking about like the territories of the land,
- 19:46territories of Syria and Gaza, so and then also from the east
- 19:51too. So it's like kind of that
- 19:53surrounding thing which we know will again happen in the end
- 19:56times, the last days, but this is specific to this time.
- 20:00Yet for all of this, his anger is not turned away.
- 20:04His hand is still upraised, but the people have not returned to
- 20:10him who struck them, nor had they sought the Lord Almighty.
- 20:15So again, not. Just don't try to do things on
- 20:19your own. Seek God in everything.
- 20:21So seek God and he will be found.
- 20:23That's what Scripture says. So these people at this time
- 20:28were being punished because they did not turn to the Lord.
- 20:31They were turning to other kingdoms to say, I need an
- 20:34alliance with you because I want to protect myself against, you
- 20:37know, the Assyrian. And but they weren't turning to
- 20:42God. So the Lord will cut off from
- 20:45Israel both head and tail, both palm branch and read in a single
- 20:51day. So that's like pretty
- 20:54immediately he's taking care of that.
- 20:56The elders and the dignitaries are the head.
- 20:59So he's describing it's your Lord will cut off from Israel
- 21:03both the head and the tail. So the elders will be cut and
- 21:05dignitaries will be cut off. And the prophets who teach lies
- 21:11are the tail. So both of them will be cut off
- 21:15there. That's going to end.
- 21:16Those who guide this people mislead them.
- 21:20So again, like what I was saying about the churches, there's a
- 21:23lot of churches that are misleading people right now.
- 21:26I don't trust churches. Go to the Bible and make sure
- 21:32that whatever your church is teaching is in alignment with
- 21:36the Bible. Don't just take that.
- 21:38I think this is where we have to rely on the Holy Spirit.
- 21:41Because I can recall times that I was in a church and I had no
- 21:45idea, but I would be there and all of a sudden I would just get
- 21:50this like feeling of questioning of what was said And I don't
- 21:56know where I'm like I had no knowledge to compare it to back
- 22:00at that time. I hadn't read the Bible until
- 22:022019. So I had nothing to compare it
- 22:05to. It was just kind of like a
- 22:06feeling like why I don't know if I agree with this or why, you
- 22:10know, I would have questioned things that were stated.
- 22:13And unfortunately, I should have read my Bible back then, but I
- 22:17didn't. And then when I finally did, now
- 22:22anytime I listen to any anyone speak, I reflect on what I know
- 22:28from the Bible, what I've read in the Bible.
- 22:30And that's where we need to be grounded in the words of the
- 22:34Bible. Because I've heard people take
- 22:37scriptural verses and two verses together that aren't related in
- 22:43the Bible and have to do with different events, but they're
- 22:45both scripture from the Bible and they're misapplied to make a
- 22:50point. And so you have to really
- 22:53understand what the Bible is. That's unfortunate because so
- 22:56many people haven't read the Bible and it's a big book.
- 22:59But trust me, I won't even say trust me.
- 23:03I'm just going to say that as an example, I read the Bible in
- 23:08months. I did spend a lot of time on it
- 23:12when I was driving. I was doing a lot of driving at
- 23:14that time and I would have it pay as I was driving.
- 23:18So that helped me get through the Bible and then I would pick
- 23:22up the hard copy Bible and finish off, you know where I was
- 23:27reading. But I was able to do it in three
- 23:28months. A lot of people do it in one
- 23:31year. There are plans out there that
- 23:33show you how to do the Bible in one year.
- 23:35So just because it seems like a big task, it's worth it because
- 23:40you need to know the truth. And especially as we go into the
- 23:44future, and especially how I'm seeing there, there are there
- 23:50are definitely good churches and there's good online churches too
- 23:54that are speaking the truth. And I can only say that because
- 23:58I've read the Bible, but there's a lot of them that sound good
- 24:02and it all sounds good, but they leave out parts of the Bible.
- 24:06They give you like half of the information out of the Bible and
- 24:10it's not doing a good service to you because you need the whole
- 24:14truth, not a portion of it. So I get in the word of God
- 24:20because that and pray to God to reveal things, pray for the Holy
- 24:25Spirit to give you a nudge of some kind.
- 24:30Like have you questioned something that is said in the
- 24:32in, in a church? If you're not, you know, if
- 24:35you're not sure if your church is teaching according to the
- 24:38Bible, and then, you know, it says that the holy if you seek
- 24:43God, you will find him. So if you ask the Holy Spirit,
- 24:45please let me know if anything that I hear in church is not
- 24:49correct. And maybe then you'll get some
- 24:52sort of feeling like look into that and then go to the Bible
- 24:55and find it in the Bible and study it.
- 24:58And then you know about it to to get the truth from God.
- 25:03Just so important. I can't stress that enough.
- 25:06So again, it's going back to verse 13.
- 25:09It's the people have not returned to him who struck them,
- 25:12nor the had they sought the Lord Almighty.
- 25:15So seek God and God is going to cut off the head and the tails,
- 25:20which is the elders, the dignitaries, the prophets who
- 25:22teach lies. So there are prophets who teach
- 25:26lies. Those who guide this people
- 25:29mislead them and those who are guided are LED astray.
- 25:33You don't want to be LED astray. Therefore the Lord will take no
- 25:37pleasure in the young men, nor will he pity the fatherless and
- 25:41the widows. For everyone is ungodly and
- 25:45wicked. Every mouth speaks fully folly.
- 25:50So yeah, if you're guided, if you're misguided and you don't
- 25:55have a a firm foundation, if you're not on the the rock of
- 26:00God and in the word, then you can be misled because you don't
- 26:04know any better. But God, you know, he's, he's
- 26:08putting, he put so many people in other people's paths, but
- 26:13often when they're put in our path for a reason, we give
- 26:16excuses and we don't follow through on it.
- 26:19So if God put somebody in your path that is pointing is, you
- 26:25know, like trying to get you to have a relationship with him,
- 26:30encouraging you to have a relationship with him.
- 26:34Do that because you may not get another warning, you may not.
- 26:40I don't know. Just like don't.
- 26:43Don't ignore those things, especially today.
- 26:47Yet for all this, his anger is not turned away.
- 26:50His hand is still upraised. Surely wickedness burns like
- 26:54fire. It consumes Brewers and thorns.
- 26:56It sets the forest that gets ablaze so that it rolls upward
- 27:00in a column of smoke. But by the wrath of the Lord
- 27:04Almighty, the land will be scorched.
- 27:08So in the wrath of God, we just talked about in the Book of
- 27:11Revelation, it gives you all the details.
- 27:15And yes, there is like a third of the earth will actually be
- 27:18burned. The whole, you know, it gets
- 27:21worse. That's the wrath of God.
- 27:23So the people who have themselves and have the Holy
- 27:26Spirit are not subject to the wrath of God.
- 27:30But I believe, contrary to others, that we will experience
- 27:35tribulation. I just think tribulation has
- 27:37been going on. And again, I do think that we
- 27:41will see the Antichrist, if you want to call him that, the
- 27:45lawless one, the you know that are the abomination of
- 27:47desolation. I think we will.
- 27:49We will see that someday and see it happening and, and it
- 27:56hopefully won't be too long after that, that Jesus will
- 27:59return in the clouds. But I think there is that little
- 28:03portion and I'd like to prepare mentally for that and then have
- 28:09Jesus come earlier than I think then the other way around to be
- 28:12surprised and to see all this happening and thinking, oh, he's
- 28:15not coming back, but he is. He's a God, is a God of his
- 28:22word. He, if he says something, it
- 28:24will happen. OK, so.
- 28:27And the people will be fuel for the fire.
- 28:29They will not spare one another. On the right they will devour
- 28:34but still be hungry. On the left they will eat but
- 28:37not be satisfied. Each will feed on the flesh of
- 28:40their own offspring. Manasseh will feed on Ephraim
- 28:44and Ephraim on Manasseh. Together they will turn against
- 28:48Judah. Yet all this, yet for all this,
- 28:53his anger is not turned away. His hand is still upraised.
- 28:58So this is a very terrible time in the earth.
- 29:03And it, you know, it was, I mean, he pronounced judgement on
- 29:09Israel and Judah. I mean, that's why they got
- 29:12scattered out of their land. And it wasn't until 1948 when
- 29:17Israel got their territory again.
- 29:20So they did all, they went into exile over all this time, and
- 29:23then they didn't become a nation until 1948.
- 29:27So it's every, you know, God's chosen people have been through
- 29:33a lot and they have been through a lot because they don't stay
- 29:41seeking him and they don't stay in relationship with him.
- 29:44They keep getting lured away by other nations that are
- 29:50surrounding. So anyway, I will go to the
- 29:54questions and answer answers from the study guide and then
- 29:58we'll conclude all this. So how would God honor Galilee
- 30:02and the nations? The land of the tribes of
- 30:03Zebulun and NAFTA Lee were humbled by the attacks of the
- 30:08Assyrian Tiglath Killser the Third in 734 and 732 BC.
- 30:15This Galilee region which in which large numbers of Gentiles
- 30:21would live, would be honored when Jesus ministered there, as
- 30:25Matthew indicated by quoting Isaiah 9 verses one through 2 in
- 30:31Matthew chapter 4, verses 13 through 16.
- 30:34So I, yeah, I didn't even pick up on that one.
- 30:38But yes, the very first beginning of Chapter 9 is where
- 30:44Jesus ministered and quoted in Matthew, quoted Isaiah.
- 30:50So we're only in Chapter 9 and Jesus has talked about.
- 30:54So what does this great light refer to?
- 30:56Isaiah was looking ahead to the future Messiah, Jesus Christ.
- 31:02The first part of Israel to be humbled by Assyria would also be
- 31:07the first to see the new and great light.
- 31:10God would focus on Israel and beyond that the Messiah would be
- 31:15a quote, a light for the Gentiles.
- 31:19That's referenced in a later chapter of Isaiah 42 verse 6 and
- 31:2549 verse 6, and also in the gospel Luke chapter 2 verse 32.
- 31:33How would God shatter the yoke of His people?
- 31:36The immediate fulfillment of this prophecy occurred when God
- 31:39destroyed the oppressive yoke of the Assyrian army in seven O 1
- 31:43BC. Isaiah compared this deliverance
- 31:46to Midian's defeat in the time of Gideon.
- 31:51Perhaps a yoke is also a symbol for the heart's bondage to sin.
- 31:56In this sense, the Messiah, Jesus Christ, broke the yoke of
- 32:01sin through his death and resurrection.
- 32:05What child is this? Unlike the prophecy of Chapter
- 32:097, which had an immediate application as well as a later
- 32:13one, this prophecy speaks specifically of a coming
- 32:17Messiah. The names.
- 32:19This is the names given to this child, mighty God, everlasting
- 32:23Father, Prince of Peace, allow no possibility for it to mean
- 32:29any other person. So this is absolutely Jesus, and
- 32:33it's verse 6 and yeah, verse 6. And then it goes into seven with
- 32:40more description. What is the zeal of the Lord
- 32:44Almighty? God's zeal is His firm, deep,
- 32:47compassionate commitment to do what He sets out to do, in this
- 32:51case, to deliver his people by means of the Messiah.
- 32:57Who were Ephraim and the inhabitants of Samaria?
- 33:00Although Isaiah's prophecies were primarily concerning Judah
- 33:04and Jerusalem, his message in nine in Chapter 9, verses 8
- 33:09through 10 and four address the north.
- 33:13Oh, actually Chapter 9 verse 8 and chapter 10 verse 4 address
- 33:18the northern Kingdom of Israel. Ephraim was a name for the
- 33:23Northern Kingdom as a whole. Samaria here refers to Israel's
- 33:29capital city, though Samaria was was also used to designate the
- 33:34entire territory of the Northern 10 tribes.
- 33:42What do the bricks and fig trees refer to?
- 33:45These are examples of the destruction that the Assyrians
- 33:47would bring on the northern Kingdom of Israel.
- 33:49In this context, the people confidently boasted that they
- 33:52would easily rebuild and replant whatever the enemy tore down and
- 33:56uprooted. In fact, the mere adequate
- 33:58bricks and figs trees would be replaced by superior dressed
- 34:02stone and Cedars, but God would not allow this because of their
- 34:06sins. Who were Resin's foes?
- 34:10Resin was the king of Arum and Resin's foes were the Assyrians,
- 34:15the dreaded Assyrians, as well as Israel's former allies, the
- 34:21Arameans, and Israel's perpetual enemies, the Philistines.
- 34:26Again, isn't that wild that the Philistines are still Israel's
- 34:29perpetual enemy in Gaza? Will all that be brought against
- 34:34them by the Lord? Were there no good leaders in
- 34:38Israel? Israel's kings had consistently
- 34:41been evil idolaters. The rest of Israel's political
- 34:46and religious leaders were also corrupt.
- 34:48False prophets claimed to speak for God but worshipped false
- 34:52gods. That happened a whole lot during
- 34:54Ahab and Jezebel. A summary of Israel's sins which
- 34:58resulted in God's judgment is found in Second Kings chapter
- 35:0317, verses 7 through 18. Why punish the fatherless and
- 35:08the widows? The breakdown of leadership in
- 35:11Israel affected all society, even the most helpless.
- 35:16Though the nation was being LED astray by its leaders and false
- 35:19prophets, and the guilt of these was therefore great, nobody was
- 35:24without blame, even the fatherless and widows.
- 35:27The socially disadvantaged must share in the judgment, for the
- 35:31contagion of godlessness had spread throughout the whole
- 35:36nation. Isaiah surely had tears in his
- 35:38eyes as he wrote this. Does this describe cannibalism?
- 35:43Isaiah used the imagery of cannibalism to describe civil
- 35:48war among the tribes of Israel. They did not literally eat each
- 35:52other, but they did much damage as they turned against each
- 35:56other and tried to devour each other.
- 35:58The devouring of 1's own offspring might cease to be
- 36:04metaphorical and become horribly literal.
- 36:07However during the Assyrians final three-year siege of
- 36:12Samaria that was talked about in the second Kings first or
- 36:16chapter 17 verse 5, Leviticus chapter 26 verse 29 and 2nd
- 36:21kings chapter 6 verse 24 through 29.
- 36:25What rights did the poor have? From the Pentateuch, Pentatech
- 36:31to the prophets, the Old Testament champions the right of
- 36:35the poor. The weekly Sabbath, Sabbath
- 36:38year, and the year of Jubilee were designed to restore the
- 36:43balance of wealth and lighten the debt of the poor.
- 36:47In addition to redeeming property they had sold during
- 36:51economic hardship, the poor could obtain interest free loans
- 36:56and buy food at cost. It's really interesting because
- 36:59we are in a Jubilee year. 20, 2020 2025 is a Jubilee year, so
- 37:07we're in an interesting time to pay attention to Why use a
- 37:13wicked nation to punish Judah? God was demonstrating his power
- 37:16over all human authority. That God would employ A
- 37:21notoriously wicked nation to judge Judah must have shocked
- 37:25them. But God could use even the Pagan
- 37:28and arrogant Assyrians as instruments to punish his
- 37:32people. This was the ultimate irony, an
- 37:36emphatic display of God's absolute rule.
- 37:39Of course, while God used their sinful actions for his purpose,
- 37:43the Assyrians were not off the hook for their misdeeds, for God
- 37:47would also hold them accountable.
- 37:53And actually I was reading a little bit more of I went past
- 37:59Chapter 9, so I added a little extra this time.
- 38:02So I'm going to end this. And if you want to stay in the
- 38:06word of God, please subscribe to this podcast.
- 38:10And I tried to do this every day to do a chapter, read a chapter
- 38:15and discuss what thoughts come to mind.
- 38:19So I hope you stay with us and stay in the word of God if you
- 38:24if you don't stay in this podcast, because I know these
- 38:26are long, but if you can, that's great.
- 38:29And if not, just be in the Word of God, please.
