Latest / Sri Aurobindo Studies / Introduction to the Higher Levels of Consciousness Beyond the Mind
Transcript
- 0:01Western psychology has begun to explore the levels and realms of
- 0:05mind. This study has been going on for
- 0:07many hundreds if not thousands of years in India, where the
- 0:11psychological framework of inner space has been a key focus of
- 0:16yogic psychology. Western study started with the
- 0:19mental powers and then began to explore the connection of less
- 0:23conscious levels such as the subconscious and what Jung
- 0:28called the collective unconscious and their influence
- 0:32on our waking minds and responses to circumstances and
- 0:36events. Srioro Bindo recognized that the
- 0:40evolution of consciousness implies that there are higher
- 0:44realms and stages of consciousness beyond what the
- 0:47human being ordinarily experiences, and thus took his
- 0:51research into those higher realms.
- 0:55He acknowledges the role and impact of the subconscious and
- 0:59the unconscious, but he also recognizes that as new, higher,
- 1:04and more powerful levels of awareness take on a greater
- 1:07importance in human life, many of the former levels will be
- 1:11subject to modification and even transformation in the life
- 1:17Divine. Sri Robindo does a review of
- 1:20some of these higher stages and the differentiating factors as
- 1:24to how they operate. Starting from the mental level,
- 1:28there is what he calls the higher Mind.
- 1:31Above that are levels such as the Illumined Mind, the Over
- 1:35Mind and eventually the Supermind.
- 1:39The Supermind acts as the primary interface between pure
- 1:43existence, consciousness, force and bliss.
- 1:46Suchit Ananda and the manifestation of the world's
- 1:50associated with mind, life and physical substance.
- 1:54It holds concurrently the awareness of pure existence and
- 1:59the power to create and manifest the world's and their operation
- 2:03in detail. For a substantial understanding
- 2:06of these levels and their differences and their varying
- 2:09modes and powers of operation, it is best to consult the Life
- 2:14Divine directly. As part of this more
- 2:18comprehensive view of the play of consciousness, Sri Aurobindo
- 2:22also describes the action and conscious force that is tied to
- 2:26each of the chakras, the subtle energy centers that act as a
- 2:30Nexus for reception and expression of various forms of
- 2:35the consciousness and force operative in the creation.
- 2:40Sri Aurobindo observes. Quote If your consciousness
- 2:44rises above the head, that means that it goes beyond the ordinary
- 2:49mind to the centre above which receives the higher
- 2:52consciousness, or else towards the ascending levels of the
- 2:57higher consciousness itself. The 1st result is the silence
- 3:02and peace of the self, which is the basis of the higher
- 3:06consciousness. This may afterwards descend into
- 3:10the lower levels, into the very body.
- 3:14Light also can descend and force the navel and the centers below
- 3:19it are those of the vital and the physical.
- 3:22Something of the higher force may have descended there.
