- 0:00Traditionally, a realized guru has always been recognized as
- 0:04capable of sorting out and resolving issues of disciples
- 0:09who came under their direct guidance.
- 0:12It has even been said that such a guru could take responsibility
- 0:15for and eliminate the effects of past karma for the disciple.
- 0:21Communication of deep spiritual experiences and insights also is
- 0:26known to occur in the guru disciple relationship.
- 0:30In some cases, these things occur through what are called
- 0:33gift waves in some of the Tibetan tradition or through
- 0:37what is called shaktipat in some of the yoga traditions.
- 0:42In other cases, the guru provides a mirror to the
- 0:45disciple or simply provides insight and guidance when the
- 0:50disciple faces some serious concerns or issues.
- 0:55In his book Autobiography of a Yogi, Paramount Yogananda
- 1:00described how he was cured of a potentially fatal disease as a
- 1:04young person by his parents devotion to their guru lineage
- 1:09and concentration on a photo of their guru.
- 1:12While in many cases the guru relationship is less intense
- 1:16than those instances recounted here, the value and importance
- 1:22of the guru's guidance and inward concentration are not to
- 1:26be underestimated. For disciples who joined the Sri
- 1:31Orovindo Ashram during the lifetimes of Sri Orovindo and
- 1:34the Mother, a unique opportunity was made available to them.
- 1:39The Mother organized the functioning of the ashram and
- 1:42direct guidance of the disciples.
- 1:45Many people reported the inner openings and experiences that
- 1:49they had as a result of her influence.
- 1:52One simple incident is described by an individual who is living
- 1:56at the ashram during August 1973 at the time of the final balcony
- 2:02darshan of the mother. At the time, the word was that
- 2:07she was not going to appear for the darshan due to age and
- 2:10physical incapacity. This individual, who resided
- 2:15some mile or more from the ashram building, went to bed on
- 2:19the evening of the 14th of August with the firm
- 2:22understanding that there would not be a darshan event taking
- 2:26place the next day. Around 3:00 AM, he was suddenly
- 2:30jolted awake with an electric sensation running through his
- 2:34entire body, and he knew that the darshan was going to take
- 2:39place. He prepared himself for the day
- 2:42with a feeling that he was floating several inches above
- 2:45the ground. When he arrived at the ashram
- 2:48facility, the signboard indicated that indeed the
- 2:53darshan would occur that evening.
- 2:56This incident is one of many that have been recounted by
- 2:59disciples and devotees over the years after interacting with the
- 3:03Mother and being impacted by the spiritual force that radiated
- 3:08from her with an intensity that was unmatched in anyone else
- 3:13they had known in their lives, other than for those who also
- 3:17had the benefit of direct interaction with Sri Rovindo.
- 3:21The Mother's ability to respond to the inner energetic movement
- 3:25of individuals and aid them in working through any resistance
- 3:29or obstacles to achieve the next stage in their spiritual
- 3:33progress was exceptional. Today, many still experience the
- 3:38subtle and transformative influence of the Mother wherever
- 3:42they happen to be in the world, whatever they happen to be
- 3:45doing, and whatever circumstances they find
- 3:48themselves in when they open themselves inwardly with
- 3:53aspiration, receptivity and a consecrated surrender to the
- 3:58Divine Force, Sri Aurobindo observes quote.
- 4:04You have only to aspire to keep yourself open to the Mother, to
- 4:09reject all that is contrary to her will, and to let her work in
- 4:14you, doing all your work for her and in the faith that it is
- 4:18through her force that you can do it.
- 4:21If you remain open in this way, the knowledge and realization
- 4:26will come to you in due course. End Quote reference.
