- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. It's Thursday.
- 0:15It's the 19th of February. Great to have your company.
- 0:18And today, today the world's kind of collide.
- 0:21There is an awesome symmetry with what we're reading.
- 0:24And today's date. Did you realise that 1670 years
- 0:30ago exactly on this day, the Roman Emperor Constantius the
- 0:35second, That's the sun of the great Christian Roman Emperor
- 0:39Constantine, he closed all the Pagan temples.
- 0:44Yep, it was on this day that he declared that all Pagan temples
- 0:49were to be torn down or decommissioned and no longer be
- 0:52used for Pagan worship. Isn't that incredible?
- 0:55So today, as we're reading this book of Hosea, some of the very
- 1:00temples in which this worship is happening, in which Hosea is
- 1:05speaking out against, they were the very temples that were
- 1:07closed down 1670 years ago by our mate Constantius the Second.
- 1:15Amazing, amazing. So let us read this chapter as
- 1:19God creates and pleads His case against this northern Kingdom of
- 1:24Israel. As we read together Hosea
- 1:27chapter 4, hear the word of the Lord.
- 1:40O people of Israel, the Lord has brought charges against you,
- 1:44saying there is no faithfulness, no kindness, no knowledge of God
- 1:51in your land. You make vows and break them.
- 1:54You kill and steal and commit adultery.
- 1:58There is violence everywhere, 1 murder after another.
- 2:02That is why your land is in mourning and everyone is wasting
- 2:06away. Even the wild animals, the birds
- 2:09of the sky and the fish of the sea are disappearing.
- 2:13Don't point your finger at someone else and try to pass the
- 2:16blame. My complaint, you priests, is
- 2:19with you, so you will stumble in broad daylight and your false
- 2:25prophets will fall with you in the night, and I will destroy
- 2:29Israel, your mother. My people are being destroyed
- 2:32because they don't know me. Since you priests refuse to know
- 2:36me, I refuse to recognise you as my priests.
- 2:40Since you have forgotten the laws of your God, I will forget
- 2:44to bless your children. The more priests there are, the
- 2:47more they sin against me. They have exchanged the glory of
- 2:51God for the shame of idols. When the people bring their sin
- 2:56offerings, the priests get fed. So the priests are glad when the
- 3:01people sin. And what the priests do, the
- 3:04people also do so. Now I will punish both priests
- 3:07and people for their wicked deeds.
- 3:10They will eat and still be hungry.
- 3:13They will play the prostitute and gain nothing from it, for
- 3:17they have deserted the Lord to worship other gods.
- 3:21Wine has robbed my people of their understanding.
- 3:24They ask a piece of wood for advice.
- 3:27They think a stick can tell them the future.
- 3:30Longing after idols has made them foolish.
- 3:34They have played the prostitute, serving other gods and deserting
- 3:37their God. They offer sacrifices to idols
- 3:41on the mountain tops. They go up into the hills to
- 3:44burn incense in the pleasant shade of oaks, poplars and
- 3:48terebinth trees. That is why your daughters turn
- 3:52to prostitution and your daughters in law commit
- 3:55adultery. But why should I punish them for
- 3:58their prostitution and adultery? For your men are doing the same
- 4:02thing, sinning with whores and shrine prostitutes.
- 4:06Oh foolish people, you refuse to understand, so you will be
- 4:11destroyed, though you, Israel, are a prostitute.
- 4:16May Judah not be guilty of such things.
- 4:19Do not join the false worship at Gilgal or Beth Avon, and do not
- 4:25take the oaths there in the Lord's name.
- 4:28Israel is stubborn like a stubborn heifer, so should the
- 4:32Lord feed her like a lamb in a lush pasture.
- 4:36Leave Israel alone because she is married to idolatry.
- 4:41When the rulers of Israel finish their drinking, off they go to
- 4:45find some prostitutes They love Shame more than honour, so a
- 4:50mighty wind will sweep them away.
- 4:54Their sacrifices to idols will bring them shame.
- 5:09Our Lord, in the midst of all of this, your people turning their
- 5:14backs on you, you look to Judah, you look to that other land in
- 5:19the South where you see people being faithful to you and you
- 5:24wish them nothing but more faithfulness so that you can
- 5:26continue to bless them. Our Lord, your heart always
- 5:30looking for a way to bless, a way to include, a way to draw
- 5:34near and be close. Lord, thank you that your heart
- 5:39is for us, your chosen possession, your special ones.
- 5:47And Lord, I pray that you would shape us, Holy Spirit, that you
- 5:51would transform us from the inside out, that our hearts
- 5:56would want nothing more than to draw close to You, Lord.
- 6:01And that as we do that, that you continue to soften us and to, to
- 6:06give us hearts for you and your way and your desires and your
- 6:10plans and your Kingdom so that we can be your agents of change
- 6:16and of grace and compassion and faithfulness here.
- 6:20Our Lord, make us faithful people as you are our faithful
- 6:23God. And thank you for your
- 6:26faithfulness to us. That never changes morning, noon
- 6:30and night. Ah, we love you.
- 6:32And we pray all of this in your faithful name, Jesus, Amen.
