- 0:10Speaker 1: Welcome to Girls Gone Hallmark, a Hallmark review podcast talking
- 0:14Speaker 1: PBS Today. I'm Megan and I'm a longtime Hallmark fan.
- 0:16Speaker 1: I'm Wendy. I'm a former Hallmark hater. On today's episode,
- 0:19Speaker 1: we are discussing the Count of Monte Cristo, episode four,
- 0:23Speaker 1: which originally aired on PBS on Sunday, April twelfth, and
- 0:30Speaker 1: is currently available to stream on PBS dot Org or
- 0:32Speaker 1: on the PBS Passport app. These episodes do also re
- 0:37Speaker 1: air on your local PBS affiliate if you miss them
- 0:40Speaker 1: the first time around. As mentioned, we are Girls Gone Hallmark.
- 0:43Speaker 1: We are Girls Gone Homemark everywhere around the Internet. Instagram, TikTok, threads,
- 0:48Speaker 1: Blue Sky, Facebook. We are most active on Instagram. That's
- 0:52Speaker 1: the best place to find us, especially if you are
- 0:55Speaker 1: interested in our schedule. Yeah. Hey, we are also loving
- 1:00Speaker 1: your emails. We are prepping for another mailbag episode this month,
- 1:05Speaker 1: so send them our way. We are hello at Girls
- 1:08Speaker 1: Gone Hallmark dot com. Can I mention an email real quick?
- 1:13Speaker 1: Oh yes, please, just off hand. I don't even know
- 1:17Speaker 1: the details of it. I just remember somebody saying, oh,
- 1:20Speaker 1: actually it wasn't an email. It was in our recent
- 1:22Speaker 1: listener survey somebody was like, if you're going to continue
- 1:26Speaker 1: doing PBS, you should consider doing the Puzzle Lady. Oh,
- 1:30Speaker 1: I don't know what that is is lady. I mean
- 1:32Speaker 1: I feel like this is right in the lane.
- 1:35Speaker 2: Of Hallmark, Like it's like a mystery.
- 1:37Speaker 1: It's a mystery. Cora aka the Puzzle Lady is eccentric,
- 1:42Speaker 1: no nonsense, and she proves the perfect way to outwit murderers,
- 1:46Speaker 1: comment and corrupt officials. Interesting, this is a UK.
- 1:51Speaker 2: Show and I'm kind of interested in that.
- 1:56Speaker 1: Not for maybe not for us, because we were just
- 1:59Speaker 1: talking of I say, like, Wendy slow your role, stop
- 2:03Speaker 1: with suggesting, but maybe for you to watch, especially now
- 2:08Speaker 1: that you're a PBS Passport subscriber. I think I'm a
- 2:11Speaker 1: huge PBS stand Can I donate to them? I need
- 2:15Speaker 1: a T shirt that says like PBS Masterpiece. I'm a
- 2:18Speaker 1: huge fan. I'm so happy to hear it. You know.
- 2:21Speaker 1: My husband last night one step Closer to the down
- 2:23Speaker 1: to Abbey Binge we are. I was watching this episode,
- 2:28Speaker 1: The Count of Monte Cristo, episode four, and it was
- 2:31Speaker 1: the opera scene and there was like, oh brand music
- 2:33Speaker 1: playing and my husband I was upstairs when we are
- 2:35Speaker 1: in like an open loft area, so that sound kind
- 2:37Speaker 1: of like to the house, and he.
- 2:38Speaker 2: Goes, what the hell are you watch?
- 2:43Speaker 1: As his TV's his TV, the downstairs cvs competing with like,
- 2:47Speaker 1: you know, guns firing, and I don't know what he
- 2:52Speaker 1: was watching anyway, I was like, it's pits. I actually
- 2:55Speaker 1: think he would really like the show if you just yeah,
- 2:57Speaker 1: you know, it's like me, I'm a hater of all things.
- 3:00Speaker 1: If somebody said, Wendy, you're gonna watch The Count of
- 3:02Speaker 1: Mondy Cristo, I would have been like, what that's his response?
- 3:05Speaker 2: You know, especially right now it's getting so good.
- 3:10Speaker 1: I don't want to talk about it. We are gonna
- 3:12Speaker 1: get into it. Sorry, totally off the rails. I know
- 3:15Speaker 1: some people don't like it. Tune in for our listeners
- 3:18Speaker 1: survey recap episode coming on Monday. I am who I am? Yeah,
- 3:24Speaker 1: there were some responses. I was like, well, that's not
- 3:26Speaker 1: gonna change. Yeah, we'll get into it.
- 3:28Speaker 2: Why don't we?
- 3:29Speaker 1: Damn it?
- 3:29Speaker 3: Now?
- 3:29Speaker 1: Do I need to watch the Puzzle Lady? There were
- 3:31Speaker 1: several other recommendations. There was Poldark, which honestly I know
- 3:34Speaker 1: literally nothing about. There have been a lot of PBS
- 3:37Speaker 1: series of course, call The Midwife probably the longest running PBS.
- 3:40Speaker 1: There's like fifteen seasons too many. There's a lot of
- 3:43Speaker 1: good stuff on PBS. Let me tell you. I four
- 3:45Speaker 1: minute fo a minute. I thought Begas just took this
- 3:49Speaker 1: really long slow blink just because behind the scenes, Wendy
- 3:56Speaker 1: and I are back and forth like and everything I do,
- 4:01Speaker 1: I go, oh, I forgot, oh, I need to like,
- 4:03Speaker 1: I have this crazy to do list. It just keeps Yes,
- 4:07Speaker 1: tell me for a minute, what did you think? I
- 4:09Speaker 1: was like, do we need to separate and just have
- 4:12Speaker 1: like a PBS podcast? Yes, podcast? Maybe? Maybe? I actually don't.
- 4:19Speaker 1: I don't think that's the.
- 4:20Speaker 2: Worst idea in the world.
- 4:23Speaker 1: But I yeah, I remember when we have Long Story
- 4:29Speaker 1: Short with MEGANA Windy Yeah, and it took us forever
- 4:31Speaker 1: to figure out two years we should pull Hallmark away
- 4:35Speaker 1: from it, and then we just like totally took off. Yeah.
- 4:38Speaker 1: For two years we had Girls Gone Hallmark as a
- 4:40Speaker 1: bonus episode on Long Story Short, which was a very
- 4:43Speaker 1: completely different podcast, And literally you and I were sitting
- 4:46Speaker 1: in these exact same seats at my kitchen table, and
- 4:48Speaker 1: I go, uh, I think Girls Got Hallmark should be
- 4:51Speaker 1: its own podcast. Fifteen years in the game, folks. Yeah.
- 4:54Speaker 2: No, The thoughts that compete with me are for disc ability.
- 5:01Speaker 1: Yes, you know, are people going to find PBS content
- 5:06Speaker 1: on a Hallmark podcast? Now? The other thought I have is, well,
- 5:10Speaker 1: girls called Hallmark has a built in audience. Are they
- 5:13Speaker 1: all gonna jump to a new podcast? Like? Are they
- 5:17Speaker 1: listening because it's in the feed, but aren't willing to?
- 5:20Speaker 1: I don't know, I don't know. These are the discussions
- 5:24Speaker 1: that we need to have. We do have another podcast
- 5:28Speaker 1: that does exist that has been broken off. It's called
- 5:31Speaker 1: Last to the Party. It started last summer as like
- 5:34Speaker 1: a deep dive Bravo rewatch podcast, and we went back
- 5:38Speaker 1: to the beginning with Summer House season one. We're bringing
- 5:42Speaker 1: it back this summer, jumping way ahead to the new
- 5:46Speaker 1: series in the City, spurred by all the recent Summer
- 5:50Speaker 1: House trauma. Right, so you can come on over and
- 5:53Speaker 1: watch that if you're a Bravo watcher. We are diverse
- 5:58Speaker 1: and what we want. Yes, may maybe Downton Girls coming
- 6:03Speaker 1: to a Love It, Love It.
- 6:07Speaker 2: Coming to a podcast player near you.
- 6:09Speaker 1: I just this is how we make all our best
- 6:11Speaker 1: decisions on the MIC. I get off right before like
- 6:14Speaker 1: skip skip skip skip skip skip skin was.
- 6:17Speaker 2: Talking about Sam clavelanyet.
- 6:20Speaker 1: Okay, let's move on. I know. Are you ready for synopsis? Yep.
- 6:24Speaker 1: I'm gonna read their synopsis, and then I have a thought.
- 6:26Speaker 1: Ok I'm gonna share five years after Edmund becomes the
- 6:30Speaker 1: Count of Monte Cristo, he meets his enemies in Paris.
- 6:34Speaker 1: Edmund invites them all to dinner and tells a spooky
- 6:37Speaker 1: story about a newborn baby buried alive, which horrifies several
- 6:41Speaker 1: of his guests. First of all, this synopsis barely covers
- 6:46Speaker 1: everything that happens in those for sure second five years.
- 6:51Speaker 1: Nobody told me there was a jump in time here. Yeah.
- 6:55Speaker 1: The only reason I knew there was a jump in
- 6:56Speaker 1: time is because the synopsis appeared on screen when I
- 6:59Speaker 1: was watching this. Yeah, And at the beginning of the
- 7:04Speaker 1: episode it says years earlier. Like, it doesn't tell you
- 7:07Speaker 1: a timeline, It just tells you like, years earlier. Then
- 7:10Speaker 1: we jump back to present day, which is five years
- 7:15Speaker 1: I assume five years from when we last met Edmund.
- 7:19Speaker 1: But why can we get the on screen text that
- 7:22Speaker 1: says years earlier and not the on screen text. I
- 7:25Speaker 1: guess it's confusing, Like if you say years earlier. It's
- 7:28Speaker 1: not five years later from years earlier. It's five years
- 7:31Speaker 1: so since he yeah, yeah, I know, but I thought
- 7:36Speaker 1: that was confusing. That was not the only confusing element
- 7:39Speaker 1: of this episode for me, so I had to do
- 7:42Speaker 1: lots and lots of googling. We do have some news
- 7:45Speaker 1: and notes. Billy Augusts directed all eight episodes of this
- 7:48Speaker 1: mini series. Billy's a Danish screenwriter, cinematographer and director, and
- 7:52Speaker 1: he's currently in pre production on Julius Caesar. Are we
- 7:55Speaker 1: going to be watching that at two brute? Maybe? I
- 7:59Speaker 1: mean I feel a little little like, what was what's
- 8:01Speaker 1: the word I'm looking for, Like sophisticated? Yes, real's like
- 8:07Speaker 1: I watched its that in my New Yorker subscription and
- 8:12Speaker 1: I'm a a hole grown up. This is midlife baby.
- 8:15Speaker 1: Greg Letterer and Sandra Petrolia wrote all eight episodes of
- 8:19Speaker 1: the mini series. Our regular cast returns, including Sam Claflin
- 8:23Speaker 1: as Edmund Dante's, Michelle Riondino as Jacko Poe, and Jason
- 8:27Speaker 1: Barnett as Cadarousse. We also have the addition of several
- 8:31Speaker 1: new players. You can see all of them on our website.
- 8:34Speaker 1: Girls Gone Hallmark, where there is a complete list in
- 8:37Speaker 1: our show notes. Hey, Wendy, what's your first impression of
- 8:40Speaker 1: episode four of The Count of Monte Cristo. I was
- 8:44Speaker 1: prepared for juicy revenge, not whatever, dark sinister turn. This
- 8:50Speaker 1: just took right, Wendy texting me, she starts walking, She's like, oh,
- 8:53Speaker 1: this is dark. This was dark. Wow. My first impression
- 8:59Speaker 1: is simply we're getting to the good stuff. Yeah, but
- 9:02Speaker 1: doesn't that make you feel a little bit a little cool? Well, yeah,
- 9:04Speaker 1: I'm a little nervous. I'm a little nervous. We'll talk
- 9:06Speaker 1: about it. I love that everybody who's ever read this
- 9:10Speaker 1: novel and or seen a previous version of the show
- 9:13Speaker 1: is like, hey.
- 9:13Speaker 2: Demies, welcome, get there faster.
- 9:18Speaker 1: Yeah. I actually am kind of glad that I haven't
- 9:21Speaker 1: read the book, because it's it's like watching an unknown series.
- 9:26Speaker 1: You're like, it's gonna happen, even though this is very
- 9:29Speaker 1: much like a known property. I have no previous exposure,
- 9:33Speaker 1: So I'm just experiencing it in real time as I want,
- 9:36Speaker 1: I know, and yesterday, as I'm googling because I'm like,
- 9:39Speaker 1: I need some contacts here. What's happening? Yeah, and then
- 9:43Speaker 1: you see like things that are coming right when you google.
- 9:46Speaker 1: I don't want to spoil but no, no, no no,
- 9:49Speaker 1: but let's talk what we liked about this episode. Okay,
- 9:52Speaker 1: go ahead. Well, we had asked ourselves, what's the s
- 9:57Speaker 1: revenge going to look like? What do you think this
- 9:58Speaker 1: is going to look like? And we start to get
- 10:00Speaker 1: a picture of it in this episode, and I am
- 10:03Speaker 1: shocked that I'm kind of loving the revenge stuff. I
- 10:06Speaker 1: think it walks a very fine line. It's very uncomfortable
- 10:11Speaker 1: to watch in some spots. But when we learn when
- 10:15Speaker 1: he starts connecting with Albert, Fernande and Mercedes Son, I
- 10:18Speaker 1: was like, oh no, what's he gonna do to poor Albert?
- 10:22Speaker 1: Because I was thinking I thought Albert was a goner
- 10:24Speaker 1: to be honest, Well, I thought, right, They're going to
- 10:26Speaker 1: kidnap him, They're going to torture him. This is how
- 10:28Speaker 1: he's gonna get because what revenge like? That's the worst
- 10:31Speaker 1: thing you or I could ever imagine, like get to
- 10:33Speaker 1: our kids, right or But I appreciate that so far
- 10:39Speaker 1: he did scare Albert, he did it in a way
- 10:43Speaker 1: that indebted Albert to him, that made Albert want to
- 10:47Speaker 1: be warm and welcoming to him, feel like he was
- 10:49Speaker 1: owed to favor. You know, he did walk a line
- 10:53Speaker 1: like had him kidnapped, all of that. But I think
- 10:56Speaker 1: that maybe we're seeing like there is some level of
- 11:00Speaker 1: moral compass in his revenge in Dantes and Edmond Dante's
- 11:07Speaker 1: He's not willing to harm the innocent too much. Yeah, okay, okay,
- 11:16Speaker 1: yet right, I don't know what's coming. I have not
- 11:19Speaker 1: seen that spoiled yet. For me, I haven't seen anything spoiled. Okay,
- 11:22Speaker 1: but I'm like, we might get that sure, that possibility,
- 11:26Speaker 1: that possibility remains. But when I realized that the count
- 11:30Speaker 1: was ten steps ahead of me in this process, I
- 11:32Speaker 1: was like, Oh, the storytelling is what I'm really liking,
- 11:35Speaker 1: the reveal of the story and what's happening. I have
- 11:39Speaker 1: said it before. I do plan to read this after
- 11:40Speaker 1: because I would love to get more into the details.
- 11:43Speaker 1: Especially having seen it play out. I feel like I'll
- 11:46Speaker 1: be able to envision it better. But really, he's devising
- 11:51Speaker 1: a multi layered plan to psychologically torture these men three
- 11:56Speaker 1: d chess. Yes, yes, I agree. When he embeds himself
- 12:02Speaker 1: into the lives of Albert and then Mercedes and fernand
- 12:10Speaker 1: it's so smart and intimate. It's next level, Like, You're right,
- 12:18Speaker 1: he is ten steps ahead of whatever they might find out.
- 12:23Speaker 1: He's going to be way ahead of them. I kind
- 12:27Speaker 1: of love this slow infiltration of being in Paris and
- 12:34Speaker 1: being in there this world right like you said, Like
- 12:40Speaker 1: I enjoy the revenge part of it. And even in
- 12:43Speaker 1: previous episodes it might have been last week's episode or
- 12:46Speaker 1: the week before, I was like, you know that ticks
- 12:49Speaker 1: like some sort of like box and me like, I'm
- 12:52Speaker 1: drawn to that, but.
- 12:54Speaker 2: I'm also super uncomfortable.
- 12:57Speaker 1: Yeah, doesn't this go far beyond anything you or I
- 12:59Speaker 1: could have inflicting on our high school enemies, right, like right,
- 13:03Speaker 1: But every scene is so tense and I'm like, oh God,
- 13:08Speaker 1: what are you gonna do? What's gonna happen? Are you
- 13:11Speaker 1: gonna be exposed? Which I have some thoughts about in
- 13:15Speaker 1: my wishes, But look when he when we get that
- 13:18Speaker 1: opening scene of Villefort burying a box with a live
- 13:23Speaker 1: baby in it, Yeah, that sets the tone for this
- 13:26Speaker 1: whole episode. Yeah. I have a lot to say about that,
- 13:31Speaker 1: but I want to back it up though. The set
- 13:33Speaker 1: up in Rome with Albert's kidnapping, Like you said, I
- 13:37Speaker 1: was like, oh no, where is this going? Like they're
- 13:38Speaker 1: gonna hurt Albert, and I was like, Albert's an innocent,
- 13:41Speaker 1: myronic and all of this. But I would assume like
- 13:44Speaker 1: that would be the best revenge, just to get back
- 13:47Speaker 1: at you know, he's not trying to get back at Mercedes, though,
- 13:51Speaker 1: isn't he? Though I don't. Oh, I don't know. That's
- 13:54Speaker 1: a good question. He does say the love of my life,
- 13:59Speaker 1: the only I think he says in present tense, like
- 14:03Speaker 1: the woman I love at one point, but when he
- 14:06Speaker 1: sees her, I think there is a level to which
- 14:13Speaker 1: he feels betrayed by her because she's with Fernand, her cousin. Yeah,
- 14:19Speaker 1: and it wasn't all that long after she thought you
- 14:25Speaker 1: was one year after, I know, but she thought he
- 14:28Speaker 1: was dead. Okay, but it's the great love of your life.
- 14:32Speaker 1: I don't know. I would never and he dies, well never,
- 14:38Speaker 1: I would never put that on somebody like you must
- 14:41Speaker 1: pine for me for the rest I wouldn't either.
- 14:43Speaker 2: I wouldn't either, I agree with you.
- 14:46Speaker 1: It would not make me feel revengeful. I think he's.
- 14:48Speaker 2: Revengeful if he's If.
- 14:52Speaker 1: He's revengeful towards Mercedes, that's where I feel it's complicated
- 14:57Speaker 1: at I think for sure, I think so too. The
- 15:01Speaker 1: she didn't act with malice, yes, exactly. Towards Ferdinand. I
- 15:07Speaker 1: think he needs to be more revengeful towards Villefort. He's
- 15:10Speaker 1: the one who put him in jail and danglars, and
- 15:15Speaker 1: I mean he definitely has it out for Villefort in
- 15:18Speaker 1: this episode. Wait, how did he come to have that information?
- 15:24Speaker 1: That's also my wishes too. Okay, that's also my wishes.
- 15:26Speaker 1: Let's keep talking, like.
- 15:27Speaker 2: Okay, I like that Mercedes.
- 15:33Speaker 1: Is clocking something is not off about like Dante's. I
- 15:40Speaker 1: have complicated feelings about this, and I'm sorry if I'm
- 15:42Speaker 1: not articulating it, but I like that She's like, you
- 15:47Speaker 1: seem kind of familiar. I'm gonna talk more of my wishes.
- 15:50Speaker 1: How do they not recognize this person? Oh gosh, one
- 15:52Speaker 1: hundred percent. That's in my wishes too. But I think
- 15:55Speaker 1: she does, Like when she starts like breathing heavily, and
- 15:58Speaker 1: then I think she like at first, You're like, does
- 16:01Speaker 1: she know? And then when she kind of had like
- 16:03Speaker 1: a little panic attack, Yeah, I think she knows, but
- 16:06Speaker 1: she's probably questioning me because she's like, no, that doesn't
- 16:08Speaker 1: make sense. How is it? This doesn't make sense? Yes, exactly.
- 16:11Speaker 1: I wish we kind of had like her perspective a
- 16:13Speaker 1: little bit sure, sort of like writing in her diary
- 16:18Speaker 1: like I think I saw I don't know, I need something, yeah,
- 16:22Speaker 1: something I would love from tweeting like, oh my god, guys,
- 16:24Speaker 1: I saw my dead fiance.
- 16:26Speaker 2: Yeah exactly, Oh could this possibly be happening?
- 16:28Speaker 1: I could not help When they're in the opera scene
- 16:31Speaker 1: and like everybody's like staring at each other through their like, yeah, killers.
- 16:35Speaker 1: Do you know that song by Somber where it's like
- 16:37Speaker 1: in a room full of people look for I was like,
- 16:42Speaker 1: that's what I was playing in my head. That is
- 16:44Speaker 1: what I was playing, And in fact, I was going
- 16:45Speaker 1: to use that as my first impression that I was
- 16:47Speaker 1: like maybe a little niche get it anyway. My last
- 16:54Speaker 1: like is the dinner party from hell M. This was
- 16:59Speaker 1: so good. I thought, yeah, so creepy, so sinister. He's
- 17:04Speaker 1: just like, drop a little bombs. He's just like see
- 17:08Speaker 1: be totally and very casually and not even in a
- 17:12Speaker 1: way that he's like pretending like these are major declarations.
- 17:17Speaker 2: He's just like, hint, this room interesting, so creepy, here's
- 17:22Speaker 2: the lore of this room.
- 17:24Speaker 1: And it was you Yeah, but this is where he
- 17:28Speaker 1: scares me a little bit, and like he is scary.
- 17:32Speaker 2: He's scary, right, Sam Klaslin is so good.
- 17:36Speaker 1: And the reactions he does on his face sometimes are
- 17:40Speaker 1: so minor. I said this in the first episode too,
- 17:43Speaker 1: but the way he reacts when he's in that opera
- 17:46Speaker 1: and he starts panicking, and just the way his face changes,
- 17:51Speaker 1: and then the way he just puts that mask up
- 17:53Speaker 1: in front of these men and tells this story and
- 17:56Speaker 1: talks about the mortals, the poisons that he possesses, and oh,
- 18:01Speaker 1: my gosh, so creepy. Do you have any other likes? Well? Actually,
- 18:06Speaker 1: I really liked the storytelling behind the baby reveal. Okay,
- 18:11Speaker 1: we opened and you had texted me, You're like, who's
- 18:14Speaker 1: having this baby? And I, fortunately I had close captioning
- 18:18Speaker 1: on and I heard them say her mine and I
- 18:19Speaker 1: wrote that down, but I was like, I don't know
- 18:20Speaker 1: who that is? Yeah, And then I just knew that
- 18:23Speaker 1: there was a woman. And the only reason I even
- 18:25Speaker 1: recognize that as Villefort is because the midwife says, yes,
- 18:28Speaker 1: I know you're Villefort. Yea. Then we rewind and we
- 18:32Speaker 1: get it told do the midwife size, and we get
- 18:35Speaker 1: all of the information and we get the reveal that
- 18:39Speaker 1: Donglaar's wife had Villefort's baby and he attempted to murder
- 18:45Speaker 1: that baby, but the midwife saved him. That was really
- 18:49Speaker 1: great storytelling, even though I was like in the beginning,
- 18:52Speaker 1: I was like, wait, who are these Who's what's going on? Yeah?
- 18:56Speaker 2: The reveal I kept I was like, what did I miss?
- 18:59Speaker 1: Yeah? Yeah, for sure. So there wasn't any explanation, right, No,
- 19:04Speaker 1: not until the end. Okay, not until the end. I
- 19:06Speaker 1: mean that's a lot to like bring your viewers. That's
- 19:10Speaker 1: how you're gonna lose viewers, Like you got to give
- 19:12Speaker 1: us like, don't jump from here to there. Well unless
- 19:15Speaker 1: you're like, wait, I got to stick around and see
- 19:16Speaker 1: what's going on. And at least they did it all
- 19:18Speaker 1: in the same episode. Oh for sure, for sure. Well,
- 19:22Speaker 1: I'll tell you That's why where I did all my
- 19:24Speaker 1: googling at because I was like, oh, did Villefort have
- 19:28Speaker 1: an affair with this woman? Or was it before? From
- 19:34Speaker 1: what I read is and in this episode you hear
- 19:38Speaker 1: that we're in the home of Villefort's first wife's parents, right,
- 19:44Speaker 1: So I think he might have been married at some
- 19:48Speaker 1: point to someone else, and he may have had something
- 19:51Speaker 1: with her mind who was not yet with Danglars. It's messy,
- 19:58Speaker 1: it's messy, messy. Also had read that what we saw
- 20:03Speaker 1: in this episode is not what happens in the in
- 20:05Speaker 1: the book, interesting, there's some other person that sees the
- 20:09Speaker 1: baby being buried, and that person is the one who
- 20:12Speaker 1: saves the baby. It's not the midwife. And I thought, okay,
- 20:15Speaker 1: well they've simplified this a little bit. But who does
- 20:19Speaker 1: that baby turn out to be? Then? Oh, yeah, that's
- 20:21Speaker 1: that's that's the biggest question. I don't know who it is.
- 20:24Speaker 1: How old are they in present day? I don't know. Yeah,
- 20:27Speaker 1: is it it's not the child who has the seizures?
- 20:29Speaker 1: Is it No, because that would be Villefort. No, you
- 20:32Speaker 1: can never mind scratch, scratch all that, and that the.
- 20:34Speaker 2: Villafort's son, right, his current wife?
- 20:37Speaker 1: Is it his? It is his current Okay, I just
- 20:40Speaker 1: need to know who this who this baby is, right,
- 20:43Speaker 1: and that's going to help establish like some time markers. Sure, Okay,
- 20:47Speaker 1: let's stuck. Wicious. Okay, I already talked about it. I
- 20:50Speaker 1: needed way more contexts into the Villefort baby situation. We
- 20:54Speaker 1: just talked about it. Yeah, and again, the book The
- 20:57Speaker 1: count Mine Crystal, I think is twelve hundred meters long.
- 20:59Speaker 1: So there's far more context in the book than they
- 21:02Speaker 1: can put even into an eight episode mini series. So
- 21:07Speaker 1: we are having to make some leaps. And I wonder
- 21:11Speaker 1: if when people are making an adaptation like this, are
- 21:14Speaker 1: they expecting their viewers to have that context or are
- 21:19Speaker 1: they just saying, look, there are some things you're going to.
- 21:21Speaker 2: Have to be okay with not having all the details about.
- 21:24Speaker 1: Because it tells a story. Sure, But for me, I
- 21:29Speaker 1: do have many many questions, many many, many, many, many
- 21:32Speaker 1: many questions.
- 21:33Speaker 2: And you talked about it. How do these men not
- 21:37Speaker 2: recognize him?
- 21:39Speaker 1: I think it speaks that would enrage me actually if
- 21:41Speaker 1: I was Edmund, because I would think I'm so inconsequential
- 21:45Speaker 1: to these men that they ruined my life and then
- 21:47Speaker 1: forgot about me. Yeah, whereas Mercedes her recognizing him speaks.
- 21:55Speaker 2: To his value to her, Right, what do you mean
- 21:58Speaker 2: you don't remember me? You still my fiance? You freaking weirdo?
- 22:03Speaker 1: Yeah? Totally. Next wish is how and you talked about too,
- 22:07Speaker 1: How is Edmund figuring all of this out? I don't understand.
- 22:11Speaker 1: He has resources, he has people, he has time, but
- 22:14Speaker 1: the level of detail that he knows about like Villefort
- 22:18Speaker 1: and her mind and the baby. How does he know that?
- 22:21Speaker 1: How did he know that it ever happened? We only
- 22:23Speaker 1: have that one shot where he's going through all those papers,
- 22:27Speaker 1: but that was about his arrest and all that stuff.
- 22:32Speaker 2: So yeah, I mean he finds the midwife, how did
- 22:35Speaker 2: he even know.
- 22:36Speaker 1: To looking for this person? Like, yeah, cat Rousse, well, yes,
- 22:40Speaker 1: but canter Rousse seems to be good at executing a plan.
- 22:43Speaker 1: Cadarousse is not the brains behind this operation. So well, sure,
- 22:49Speaker 1: I think cat Rousse was the one who found the information.
- 22:52Speaker 1: How did he not even look for it? It just
- 22:54Speaker 1: feels very advanced, And like you said, I wonder if
- 22:57Speaker 1: writers who do an adaptation like this or just like okay,
- 23:01Speaker 1: just viewers go along with the story here.
- 23:04Speaker 2: Yeah, just accept that you got the information and we're
- 23:06Speaker 2: going to be.
- 23:06Speaker 1: Good with that. Yeah, that's interesting to me. Also, Jacko Poe,
- 23:10Speaker 1: I didn't know you had that in you When he
- 23:13Speaker 1: slits them, Oh my gosh, of the asylum guard or whatever.
- 23:19Speaker 1: Didn't see that coming. I thought we were like playing
- 23:22Speaker 1: in an area of like non murder. Well, and I
- 23:27Speaker 1: kind of actually like that. Edmund's like, what do you
- 23:31Speaker 1: do and do. That's actually kind of a problem for
- 23:33Speaker 1: us that you know, these actions do have consequences, you know.
- 23:39Speaker 1: I think Jacopoe has gotten to the point where he's like, well,
- 23:42Speaker 1: I'm untouchable because Edmund has all these resources. Perhaps, so
- 23:47Speaker 1: I just, you know, walk amongst this world with a
- 23:50Speaker 1: lot of freedom. I forgot to mention alike, and that
- 23:54Speaker 1: is remember back in episode two or excuse me, Episode three,
- 23:58Speaker 1: Edmund saves Jacopoe from the authorities, and we're like, yeah,
- 24:01Speaker 1: but he's a bad guy, Like, why are you trusting
- 24:03Speaker 1: this criminal with basically your life? In this episode, I
- 24:08Speaker 1: get some clarity on that because when he saves Luigi,
- 24:11Speaker 1: he's like, hey, they're coming for you. You might want to hide.
- 24:13Speaker 1: Luigi's like, why did you hell me? He says, I
- 24:16Speaker 1: have an aversion to authority. So here, I'm like, okay,
- 24:20Speaker 1: he hates authority more than he is concerned about Yakapo's
- 24:25Speaker 1: criminal tech days. Yeah, so he's like, I got to
- 24:27Speaker 1: stick it to somebody, and it's gonna be those guys.
- 24:29Speaker 1: Got it makes sense. I also want to know what
- 24:32Speaker 1: the drug that Edmund is taking for his stress and
- 24:34Speaker 1: anxiety is. I googled it. Well, I googled it too,
- 24:38Speaker 1: and then it led me like a rabbit hole, the
- 24:40Speaker 1: whole bunch of drugs that he takes apparently throughout all
- 24:42Speaker 1: the And I was like, this is too much. I'm
- 24:44Speaker 1: just gonna walk away. What did your google? It was
- 24:46Speaker 1: like some tincture that would basically calm him down. I mean, yeah,
- 24:52Speaker 1: it seemed like he was taking you know, medieval xannnax.
- 24:55Speaker 1: But yeah, yeah, apparently there's more drugs coming. Oh really
- 25:00Speaker 1: in other ways, done done dune. Oh and then I
- 25:04Speaker 1: just need to know where that baby is. Where's that baby?
- 25:07Speaker 1: Where's that baby? Who's that baby? Is this baby somebody
- 25:10Speaker 1: we've seen before? Who raised that baby? The midwife didn't
- 25:13Speaker 1: raise that baby. Yeah, and doesn't even matter, it doesn't
- 25:17Speaker 1: there's no DNA testing, So right now, it's not like
- 25:19Speaker 1: they're gonna be like, this is your raby in the book. Yeah,
- 25:21Speaker 1: no it's not. You are the father? Yeah, all right,
- 25:25Speaker 1: are you ready for some discussion questions? Yeah? I want
- 25:28Speaker 1: to talk about the drugs. Do you think his behavior
- 25:33Speaker 1: is influenced by whatever he's taking, Like, is he going
- 25:37Speaker 1: off the deep end because he's high on something?
- 25:40Speaker 2: Or oh, like you think that made him mean maybe No.
- 25:46Speaker 2: I think fifteen years in prison just really altered.
- 25:50Speaker 1: His brain chemistry. And where the hell is he getting
- 25:54Speaker 1: all these potions from.
- 25:56Speaker 2: I mean, money buys everything, apparently.
- 25:57Speaker 1: I guess. I'm like, I don't think Abby didn't teach
- 26:01Speaker 1: him anything about Kimi, but I really do need Like
- 26:04Speaker 1: the Count of Monty Cristal of the last year is like,
- 26:06Speaker 1: what were we doing? Give me a montage all the
- 26:07Speaker 1: things that you were doing in these five years? Mm.
- 26:11Speaker 1: Do we think Edmund is a genius because this plan
- 26:15Speaker 1: is elaborate? I do, do you? Yeah, it's the chestnut
- 26:19Speaker 1: checkers of it all. I mean, he has a pretty
- 26:23Speaker 1: incredible mind, I think to put all of these pieces
- 26:26Speaker 1: into motion. I think he's seeing the next steps ahead
- 26:30Speaker 1: of when they happen. You know, he buys this estate
- 26:33Speaker 1: and then backwards engineers getting all of these people here
- 26:37Speaker 1: and all of the things. You know, he's got to
- 26:38Speaker 1: make the connections with Albert in order to get in
- 26:40Speaker 1: with these people. I unless there's another brains.
- 26:44Speaker 2: Behind the operation. I do think there's a lot of
- 26:47Speaker 2: credit to be given to him.
- 26:48Speaker 1: It has me wondering people who have like read this
- 26:52Speaker 1: book what they think of the character of the Count
- 26:55Speaker 1: of Monte Cristo, Like, is he of because because I
- 26:58Speaker 1: truly don't know, is he of? Is he a good guy?
- 27:01Speaker 1: Is he justified? And in the end, like will we
- 27:05Speaker 1: be like oh it was all worth it? I don't know.
- 27:08Speaker 1: I don't know where we're at. That's why I don't
- 27:10Speaker 1: want to google too much because I don't want to
- 27:12Speaker 1: spoil it for me. Do you think he Do you
- 27:15Speaker 1: think Edmund is still about justice pursuit of justice? Or
- 27:19Speaker 1: has he crossed into something darker? Here? To me, it's
- 27:23Speaker 1: more revenge than justice. Yeah, it's not just I went
- 27:27Speaker 1: to prison, now you should go to prison. It's I
- 27:30Speaker 1: suffered enormously and now you will suffer enormously. Those two
- 27:34Speaker 1: things aren't the same. Yeah, gosh, it's just And I'm
- 27:39Speaker 1: going to decide what that suffering looks like.
- 27:41Speaker 2: How many episodes are left for? This is only one season?
- 27:45Speaker 1: Yeah, this is a mini series. This has an ended point?
- 27:51Speaker 1: Does oh boy? Okay, my last question, somebody told you
- 27:56Speaker 1: a story like that at a dinner party, would you
- 27:59Speaker 1: stay or would you be out the door about the baby? Yeah?
- 28:04Speaker 1: Like invited you into their home. I'd be like looking
- 28:08Speaker 1: around at the people around me, like, what's going on,
- 28:10Speaker 1: who is it?
- 28:13Speaker 2: Why is this bed still a mess all these years later?
- 28:16Speaker 1: So creepy? Yeah, yeah, it was funny because you know,
- 28:21Speaker 1: they're all out in the yard and everybody's like drinking champagne,
- 28:24Speaker 1: and her mind's like obviously, and nobody's reacting to her,
- 28:29Speaker 1: not even her husband, no, except for it like Villefort
- 28:34Speaker 1: like goes and says something shut up. He's like, put
- 28:37Speaker 1: a smile on that face. God, these men are awful.
- 28:40Speaker 1: I know. Well, even like Villefort is really the true
- 28:44Speaker 1: villain here. So far we've seen like we don't need
- 28:47Speaker 1: your word from Douglas in this. Danglars, Yeah, I'm like,
- 28:51Speaker 1: is he that bad of a guy. He just seems
- 28:53Speaker 1: like happy to be there. And I was like, oh,
- 28:54Speaker 1: you really have no idea who he is, Like when
- 28:56Speaker 1: he gets out of that coach at the country estate,
- 29:00Speaker 1: mm hmm. I was like, I mean, I think he's
- 29:02Speaker 1: motivated because Dantees was like, oh, yeah, I got Fourmula
- 29:05Speaker 1: and Frank to invest in your bank or whatever. Yeah,
- 29:09Speaker 1: And if you think way back to the beginning, Danglars
- 29:11Speaker 1: was so but hurt when he didn't get promoted that
- 29:14Speaker 1: I think he likes station and influence and power, and
- 29:18Speaker 1: he's like, oh, I'm being invited by this very wealthy
- 29:21Speaker 1: man to participate. Right, I have a question for you. Okay,
- 29:25Speaker 1: how do you feel with the way Edmund is treating Caderousse?
- 29:28Speaker 1: Good question. He's still pissed off at him, Yeah, and
- 29:34Speaker 1: I think, like, yes, we talked about this in action
- 29:39Speaker 1: makes him guilty adjacent, right, but we're five years in
- 29:45Speaker 1: and he's still kind of treating him poorly. Yeah, and
- 29:48Speaker 1: he cat Russe is doing everything that is asked of him.
- 29:52Speaker 2: When he says, can I sit down and have a
- 29:53Speaker 2: meal with you? Honestly, it broke my heart.
- 29:55Speaker 3: I know, I don't know why I'm feeling bad for
- 29:58Speaker 3: this man, but I I understood Caderousse's actions, like he
- 30:02Speaker 3: was not in a good place to stop these men exactly.
- 30:07Speaker 1: So Dante's needs to give him a little bit of grace. Yeah,
- 30:13Speaker 1: and maybe like write the ship. Yeah, dude, like you
- 30:16Speaker 1: kind of did me dirty, but now you've been five years,
- 30:19Speaker 1: like you've proven your loyalty exactly, bring you into the
- 30:23Speaker 1: inner circle. Yeah, let the man eat a meal with you.
- 30:28Speaker 1: Joca Po.
- 30:29Speaker 2: I know he loves Jocapo, although he did piss him
- 30:33Speaker 2: off in this episode.
- 30:35Speaker 1: Anyway, all right, we will be back next week with
