- 0:01Speaker 1: Local news now, a VOCM News Update.
- 0:05Speaker 2: I'm Sarah Strickland. The Minister of Energy says some critics
- 0:09Speaker 2: of the hydro deal have it all wrong. The House
- 0:11Speaker 2: of Assembly will debate a motion to accept the agreement
- 0:14Speaker 2: the week of September 14th. One component gives Newfoundland and
- 0:17Speaker 2: Labrador access to the Quebec grid to export up to
- 0:21Speaker 2: 985 megawatts of electricity to markets abroad, including the eastern U.S.
- 0:26Speaker 1: Seaboard.
- 0:27Speaker 2: Minister Lloyd Parrott says the terms of the deal make
- 0:29Speaker 2: it financially feasible to transport the energy via the Quebec grid,
- 0:33Speaker 2: as it would not make financial sense to construct our
- 0:36Speaker 2: own transmission system.
- 0:39Speaker 1: We haven't heard anyone push back on it. So that
- 0:42Speaker 1: is factual, what I've just said. And whether it's Quebec
- 0:46Speaker 1: that is transmitting, we don't have power lines. And if
- 0:49Speaker 1: the people in Newfoundland and Labrador feel that we should
- 0:52Speaker 1: go out and spend $ 25 billion on power lines for
- 0:55Speaker 1: 985 megawatts, then they haven't been informed properly and it's
- 0:59Speaker 1: very misleading.
- 1:00Speaker 2: There is one public service still being offered inside the
- 1:03Speaker 2: Waterford Hospital and there are no timelines available for when
- 1:07Speaker 2: it will be moved out. It was initially expected that
- 1:11Speaker 2: the hospital, which is over 170 years old, would be
- 1:14Speaker 2: shut down for good by now. While most of the
- 1:17Speaker 2: outstanding services offered at that site have been moved to
- 1:20Speaker 2: community-based locations, blood collection services remain. In a statement to
- 1:24Speaker 2: VOCM News, NL Health Services says it continues to plan
- 1:28Speaker 2: for the relocation of blood collection services and will provide
- 1:32Speaker 2: updates as they become available. The RNC is welcoming a
- 1:36Speaker 2: new group of recruits for the second time this year,
- 1:39Speaker 2: a first for the organization. Nineteen new officers were sworn
- 1:44Speaker 2: in to the RNC on Wednesday after graduating from the
- 1:47Speaker 2: Atlantic Police Academy in Prince Edward Island. The new recruits
- 1:50Speaker 2: will be assigned to the Cornerbrook and the Northeast Avalon regions,
- 1:53Speaker 2: along with the 18 constables who graduated earlier this year. Currently,
- 1:58Speaker 2: the RNC has 21 cadets attending the academy and is
- 2:02Speaker 2: actively recruiting for the 2027 class. A whale recently moved
- 2:07Speaker 2: from the shuttered Niagara Falls theme park Marineland has died
- 2:11Speaker 2: in a Chicago aquarium. Karen Rebo reports.
- 2:15Speaker 3: Shedd Aquarium in Chicago says one whale, Rain, came from
- 2:19Speaker 3: Marineland in mid-August, while the other, Beethoven, was already a
- 2:23Speaker 3: decades-long resident there. Both died yesterday afternoon after urgent attempts
- 2:28Speaker 3: to save them failed. Shedd said tests are underway to
- 2:31Speaker 3: figure out what happened. Marineland and several other aquariums recently
- 2:35Speaker 3: completed an unprecedented relocation of 30 captive belugas and four
- 2:40Speaker 3: dolphins to five destinations in the U.S. and Spain. Another
- 2:44Speaker 3: marine land beluga, Pikachu, died at the same Chicago facility
- 2:49Speaker 3: last week after it became severely dehydrated. Karen Rebo, the
- 2:53Speaker 3: Canadian Press.
- 2:55Speaker 2: MusicNL has released the lineup for its 2026 Awards Gala,
- 2:59Speaker 2: set for October 1st at the St. John's Convention Center.
- 3:02Speaker 2: Ten artists will take the stage. They include Adrian House,
- 3:05Speaker 2: Justin Fancy, and With Violet. Tickets are now on sale.
- 3:10Speaker 2: That's your news. I'm Sarah Strickland.
