- 1:24SPEAKER_10: I am Chris Hartsuck, your host with Big Dog Construction, your local window depot.
- 1:28SPEAKER_10: And along with me is our lovely co-host, Caitlin Buzzini.
- 1:32SPEAKER_10: Hello.
- 1:33SPEAKER_10: Hey, before we dive in, we want to give a massive shout out to our 10x partner, Ryan and Lindy Cleeman.
- 1:38SPEAKER_10: They are our official drink sponsor, SIPS Coffee.
- 1:42SPEAKER_10: Hey, for fueling our communities today from all three of the locations, Carnival, Girard, and Gillespie.
- 1:46SPEAKER_10: So grab your favorite SIPS drink, get comfortable, settle in and join us as we celebrate the people, businesses, and organizations that make our Midwest community so special.
- 1:56SPEAKER_10: Hey, Carlaville is officially Hallmark's Meriestown.
- 2:00SPEAKER_10: And today we are talking about that's right, big shout-out on that.
- 2:04SPEAKER_10: Yeah.
- 2:04SPEAKER_10: Hey, today we're talking about events that help bring the magic to life.
- 2:08SPEAKER_10: We are joined by Amanda and Stephanie to talk about all things Christmas, Carloville Christmas Market, right?
- 2:16SPEAKER_10: So welcome to the studio.
- 2:17SPEAKER_07: Thank you.
- 2:17SPEAKER_10: We appreciate you guys being here.
- 2:19SPEAKER_10: So here's what we want to hear.
- 2:21SPEAKER_10: It's been around a while.
- 2:23SPEAKER_10: We've got a lot of exciting things happening, right?
- 2:25SPEAKER_10: You guys are just one peg of things that are happening in our community to commemorate this thing that's happening.
- 2:34SPEAKER_10: But we've actually been doing it for a long time.
- 2:36SPEAKER_10: So why don't you explain just a little bit about the history, about how long we've been doing it, and then how each of you got involved.
- 2:44SPEAKER_10: So first, Amanda, say who you are.
- 2:46SPEAKER_04: My name's Amanda, and I am the president of the Carnival Christmas Market.
- 2:50SPEAKER_04: I've been doing this for about 10 years.
- 2:52SPEAKER_04: The Christmas market itself has been around for, I think this is the 36th year, and it was started by Debbie Zilm.
- 2:58SPEAKER_10: Love it.
- 2:58SPEAKER_10: Love Debbie.
- 2:59SPEAKER_10: Yep.
- 2:59SPEAKER_10: Love you.
- 3:00SPEAKER_04: There's lots of great things for this.
- 3:03SPEAKER_04: And like I said, I've been doing it for 10 years, and we just recently, three years ago, moved out to the fairgrounds from the square.
- 3:11SPEAKER_04: From the s well, from the square to some buildings around the square, then out to Cross Church.
- 3:16SPEAKER_04: And then we went out to the fairgrounds.
- 3:18SPEAKER_04: It gives us an opportunity to grow and have lots more things around the building.
- 3:22SPEAKER_10: And the fair board has made that building so nice now.
- 3:25SPEAKER_10: Yeah.
- 3:26SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 3:26SPEAKER_04: Yes.
- 3:26SPEAKER_04: And they're actually working on all the other buildings around.
- 3:28SPEAKER_04: You know, like they just rewired the 4-H building and it now has heat and there'll be booths in there too.
- 3:34SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 3:34SPEAKER_04: Oh wow, Amanda.
- 3:36SPEAKER_04: We are in the Bates Building, the 4-H building, the art building, and what we call the JLo building.
- 3:41SPEAKER_04: It's right across from the Bates Building.
- 3:42SPEAKER_06: It's the agriculture building where they show the produce and stuff like that.
- 3:46SPEAKER_06: Okay.
- 3:47SPEAKER_06: And yeah.
- 3:48SPEAKER_06: So we we have 70-ish vendors that fill those spaces, and we are full.
- 3:54SPEAKER_06: Full, full, full.
- 3:55SPEAKER_10: So that's amazing that we're full because I know I've seen in there that all sp all vendor slots are full.
- 4:02SPEAKER_10: All Airbnbs are full.
- 4:04SPEAKER_10: All hotel accommodations are full.
- 4:06SPEAKER_07: Yes.
- 4:06SPEAKER_10: It's just a full time.
- 4:07SPEAKER_10: Right.
- 4:08SPEAKER_07: It's a full time.
- 4:08SPEAKER_07: Yes.
- 4:09SPEAKER_10: I'm thinking about throwing some bits, some beds here at the showroom and renting them up.
- 4:12SPEAKER_05: Not a bad idea.
- 4:13SPEAKER_05: Hey, you've got a plenty of room down in this finished basement, guys.
- 4:16SPEAKER_10: Two office bedrooms upstairs and I have an ensuite and yeah, don't be joking.
- 4:23SPEAKER_04: Did you have the other buildings filled last year?
- 4:25SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 4:26SPEAKER_04: Oh, you did?
- 4:26SPEAKER_06: We've got them filled every year.
- 4:27SPEAKER_06: I didn't know.
- 4:28SPEAKER_06: I thought it was just bakes.
- 4:29SPEAKER_06: Okay, cool.
- 4:29SPEAKER_06: Cool.
- 4:30SPEAKER_06: And we have outdoor vendors as well as long as as well as food trucks.
- 4:33SPEAKER_06: We make a little food court out there.
- 4:35SPEAKER_06: So it's just so cool.
- 4:37SPEAKER_06: I'm Stephanie Rhodes.
- 4:38SPEAKER_06: I am the newest member of the Carlinville Christmas Market Committee.
- 4:42SPEAKER_10: The most vocal I hear.
- 4:43SPEAKER_06: Right.
- 4:44SPEAKER_06: I love it.
- 4:44SPEAKER_06: Often, yes.
- 4:45SPEAKER_06: Um, if you've been to one of our trivia bingo things, I was there.
- 4:49SPEAKER_06: I am the person that gets the mic usually, but I'm also our treasurer.
- 4:52SPEAKER_06: And I, like I said, I'm the newest person um that joined our committee, other than Kim, who we just kind of elected to add on whenever we joined the uh Kim Hunt.
- 5:02SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 5:02SPEAKER_06: No, Kim Carney Rhodes.
- 5:04SPEAKER_06: Oh, yeah.
- 5:05SPEAKER_10: I was gonna say, let's talk about your team.
- 5:07SPEAKER_06: Yes.
- 5:07SPEAKER_10: Right?
- 5:07SPEAKER_10: Let's let's talk about the team, then we'll get more into the event as well.
- 5:10SPEAKER_10: So Amanda is president.
- 5:12SPEAKER_10: Tell us about your team that really supports and makes you who you are.
- 5:15SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 5:16SPEAKER_04: Uh well, we have Carrie Gunning, who is our VP.
- 5:18SPEAKER_04: So she steps in when I can't and handles the things.
- 5:21SPEAKER_04: Jana Strader is our secretary.
- 5:24SPEAKER_04: And Stephanie's decorations.
- 5:25SPEAKER_04: And all things decorations.
- 5:27SPEAKER_04: She does all of the designing.
- 5:28SPEAKER_04: We just execute what she wants to have done.
- 5:30SPEAKER_04: Yes.
- 5:31SPEAKER_04: Love it.
- 5:31SPEAKER_04: Um she makes her husband do things.
- 5:33SPEAKER_04: I have my husband doing things.
- 5:35SPEAKER_04: And the husbands need to do things.
- 5:37SPEAKER_04: Yes, yes.
- 5:37SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 5:37SPEAKER_10: Work day to the bone.
- 5:38SPEAKER_10: That's right.
- 5:39SPEAKER_10: We do.
- 5:40SPEAKER_04: Um, Stephanie is our treasurer.
- 5:42SPEAKER_04: Uh, Kim Hunt with Epic Inc.
- 5:44SPEAKER_10: Uh-huh.
- 5:45SPEAKER_04: No.
- 5:45SPEAKER_04: Possum Ink.
- 5:47SPEAKER_04: Yeah, wrong ink.
- 5:48SPEAKER_04: Does all of our graphics and usually handles our website and all that thing.
- 5:52SPEAKER_04: And then Mandy Fester is an honor or is a board member, and Kim Rhodes is an honorary board member as well.
- 6:00SPEAKER_10: Nice.
- 6:00SPEAKER_10: Love it.
- 6:01SPEAKER_10: Love it.
- 6:01SPEAKER_10: And then do you have volunteers that help too?
- 6:03SPEAKER_10: Beyond that board?
- 6:04SPEAKER_10: Is that pretty much that you have to do that?
- 6:05SPEAKER_06: We have four star families, yes.
- 6:07SPEAKER_06: Um, our children, our spouses, they all have to get involved in one way or another.
- 6:11SPEAKER_06: Jonna's husband, Bob, is our electrician extraordinaire and does all of our lighting and tells him what to do, and he does it.
- 6:19SPEAKER_06: And then Amanda is our woodworking builder guy.
- 6:24SPEAKER_06: And so the hut that we you know check people in through and all of that, those are all handmade by our volunteers and the people that come out to help us.
- 6:33SPEAKER_06: And then now we're getting our kids involved because they're getting older.
- 6:36SPEAKER_06: So coping with our social media and and taking pictures, and we are just gonna grinch it up this year with some promos, and we are very excited.
- 6:47SPEAKER_06: Yes.
- 6:47SPEAKER_10: The uh Christmas in July grinching it up as a bingo, right?
- 6:51SPEAKER_10: Yes.
- 6:51SPEAKER_10: Yeah, exactly.
- 6:51SPEAKER_10: I like how you guys did that.
- 6:52SPEAKER_05: That was cute.
- 6:53SPEAKER_10: Yeah, so 36 years is tremendous accomplishment.
- 6:56SPEAKER_10: An event like this doesn't happen because of one person, obviously, right?
- 6:59SPEAKER_10: It takes the people who are willing to give their time, which you just mentioned for us, and all the work behind the scenes and keep coming back year after year to make something special happen for this community.
- 7:09SPEAKER_10: For sure.
- 7:09SPEAKER_10: That's what's amazing, and that's why you guys are being featured on the community segment.
- 7:13SPEAKER_10: You're brought to us by SIPS Coffee.
- 7:15SPEAKER_10: So we're glad you guys are here on that.
- 7:17SPEAKER_10: So, Hallmark aesthetic and the fairground partnership.
- 7:21SPEAKER_10: So, Stephanie, talk to us a little bit about, you know, Carlova has obviously been buzzing with this massive news, right?
- 7:27SPEAKER_10: About Hallmark.
- 7:29SPEAKER_10: And you guys recently partnered with the Fairgrounds, okay, and which has really allowed the market to expand, which is great.
- 7:35SPEAKER_10: You again, four buildings are in now?
- 7:37SPEAKER_10: Yes, four buildings.
- 7:38SPEAKER_10: I bet you could probably get some more people outside that would jump out there, right?
- 7:41SPEAKER_04: Well, we we keep adding.
- 7:42SPEAKER_04: I just added one this morning.
- 7:45SPEAKER_04: And I'm like, Oh, I take it.
- 7:46SPEAKER_04: I'm like, okay, like that's so I feel like we're probably closer to 80 by now.
- 7:51SPEAKER_10: So, how has that moved helped you guys embrace the true Hallmark uh movie aesthetics?
- 7:56SPEAKER_06: Like, can you has been fantastic for us?
- 7:59SPEAKER_06: We were so grateful to have Cross Church be our home for a few years whenever it was not feasible for the tents on the square.
- 8:07SPEAKER_06: We all remember the tents on the square and they were fantastic, but financially not feasible as the market that we want to put on because we don't want to charge a giant admission and parking fees and all that.
- 8:17SPEAKER_06: Our$1 admission just goes to help us have a headcount and then we give it straight back to the community.
- 8:23SPEAKER_06: And so that is the mission that we wanted to keep.
- 8:25SPEAKER_06: And so when we partnered with the fairgrounds, they were not only able to let us keep that mission, they were also able to let us expand our outdoor decorating to really create this amazing hallmark experience.
- 8:38SPEAKER_06: So when you drive up to the fairgrounds this year, especially, is just we've expanded so much.
- 8:43SPEAKER_06: And Kim is just taking the reins, and she is already just creating this amazing fairground experience because we all know the McCoopin County Fairgrounds.
- 8:53SPEAKER_06: Those grounds are beautiful as they sit.
- 8:55SPEAKER_07: It is.
- 8:55SPEAKER_06: And Kim and her team does an amazing job of keeping them up and keeping them modern and updates every year.
- 9:02SPEAKER_06: She comes up to us after the market and is like, well, this is what's going to be new next year.
- 9:05SPEAKER_06: And we're so excited that we're just keep expanding with them and partnering with them.
- 9:10SPEAKER_05: I mean, the fact that you have the legend, Kim Carney Rhodes, on your team.
- 9:14SPEAKER_05: I mean, that says it all.
- 9:15SPEAKER_05: And first of all, she has phenomenal taste.
- 9:17SPEAKER_05: Like in her fashion.
- 9:19SPEAKER_05: So I can't even imagine her decorating last year and the year before.
- 9:23SPEAKER_05: Obviously, I was out there.
- 9:24SPEAKER_05: Listeners, audience coming from somebody, if you haven't been there, this is this is coming from a shopper, I guess you would say.
- 9:30SPEAKER_05: You walk in, everybody loves fairgrounds anyway.
- 9:32SPEAKER_05: It's just you you step foot on it and you feel good.
- 9:35SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 9:36SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 9:37SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 9:38SPEAKER_10: For those listening, she just gave a all over body feel.
- 9:40SPEAKER_10: Yeah.
- 9:41SPEAKER_05: It feels so good.
- 9:41SPEAKER_05: Yeah, yeah.
- 9:42SPEAKER_05: But they have draping lights, you guys.
- 9:44SPEAKER_05: You truly feel like you're, like you said, it was a courtyard.
- 9:46SPEAKER_05: It's a walkway courtyard with lights.
- 9:50SPEAKER_05: And and I mean, the one year there was snow, it was so beautiful, you guys.
- 9:54SPEAKER_05: And then you go in to the buildings, nice and warm in there, and everybody's like so happy.
- 9:59SPEAKER_05: I thought it's probably because I felt like it was a Walmart greeter.
- 10:03SPEAKER_05: You walk in and they're like, hi, how are you?
- 10:05SPEAKER_05: It was and you had Karen up front.
- 10:07SPEAKER_05: That was great.
- 10:08SPEAKER_05: Yes.
- 10:08SPEAKER_05: Um, and I just think also the greeting, the checking in your little hut, it's a nice touch.
- 10:12SPEAKER_05: So I just had to talk you guys up a little bit.
- 10:14SPEAKER_06: Yeah, it is just so cool whenever you get out there.
- 10:17SPEAKER_06: And I am not from Carlinville.
- 10:18SPEAKER_06: I originally grew up in the Basalto area.
- 10:21SPEAKER_06: And so it honestly feels like home, even though I didn't grow up here.
- 10:25SPEAKER_06: When I walk and I see all of the things, it just makes me think of everything that I loved about Christmas as a kid.
- 10:30SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 10:31SPEAKER_06: And then all of those things as an adult that I'm like, wow, this just makes me feel like Christmas.
- 10:35SPEAKER_10: And then the Hallmark feel like one of the reasons Hallmark chose Carlinville because it is that hometown feel, no matter where you're from.
- 10:43SPEAKER_06: Yes.
- 10:44SPEAKER_10: It just envelops you in that.
- 10:45SPEAKER_06: And it was such an honor just to be nominated in the top 25.
- 10:48SPEAKER_06: Like so thrilled and honored to be included.
- 10:52SPEAKER_06: And we've looked at the entries of the other towns, and they are fantastic.
- 10:55SPEAKER_06: They do some amazing things.
- 10:57SPEAKER_06: So I am we're honored to be nominated and just ecstatic to win.
- 11:01SPEAKER_06: It was just, and to be the first ever is just we're set in the bar and we got this.
- 11:06SPEAKER_06: We are I love you.
- 11:07SPEAKER_06: I love your attitude.
- 11:09SPEAKER_10: Well, there's something special about a Christmas market that brings people together.
- 11:13SPEAKER_10: It's the lights, the decorations, the local vendors, the food, and the feeling that you're just talking about that you've stepped into that Christmas movie, right?
- 11:20SPEAKER_10: And with Carlomville earning that hallmark recognition, it sounds like there's even more reason for people to come experience it for themselves this year, right?
- 11:28SPEAKER_10: And just get a taste.
- 11:29SPEAKER_10: Because I I was just reading the post that we have droves of people already planning on being here.
- 11:34SPEAKER_04: Oh, there are emails, messages coming in daily that we're bringing a bus of 50, we're bringing a bus of 20, we're coming from Maine with the girls' weekend, we are coming from here.
- 11:43SPEAKER_04: And it like we've got 20 people on the Amtrak.
- 11:45SPEAKER_04: Dude, I did too.
- 11:46SPEAKER_04: I never thought about the buses.
- 11:48SPEAKER_04: Yes.
- 11:48SPEAKER_04: On average, so we we take that dollar at the door, it's four thirteen and over, just as an attendance purpose, and then we donate it back into the community.
- 11:55SPEAKER_04: We see about 3,000 people each year, right?
- 11:58SPEAKER_04: And I venture to guess that we'll probably be in the I I really higher.
- 12:03SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 12:03SPEAKER_05: What'd you put, Chris?
- 12:04SPEAKER_05: Five.
- 12:05SPEAKER_04: Oh, I was gonna say 10.
- 12:06SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I'm thinking about eight to ten.
- 12:07SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I think we'll double it.
- 12:09SPEAKER_04: Yeah, just the amount of people.
- 12:11SPEAKER_04: Oh yeah.
- 12:11SPEAKER_04: Oh yeah, yeah.
- 12:13SPEAKER_06: So our market weekend is December 4th, 5th, and 6th.
- 12:17SPEAKER_10: Friday, Saturday, Sunday.
- 12:18SPEAKER_06: But Friday, Saturday, Sunday.
- 12:20SPEAKER_06: The fairgrounds is open the fourth and the fifth.
- 12:22SPEAKER_06: So we only do Friday, Saturday.
- 12:24SPEAKER_06: Um, there's lots of other stuff going on on the square still on Sunday.
- 12:28SPEAKER_06: However, our market, our our part of it is done on Sunday.
- 12:31SPEAKER_06: Um, a lot of our that was just how we had it when we were at Cross Church, and a lot of our vendors like it that way.
- 12:36SPEAKER_06: Um, because a lot of people have other regular jobs and and it's a long weekend, it's a lot.
- 12:40SPEAKER_05: Especially if they're traveling.
- 12:41SPEAKER_06: Yes, and we start early on Friday, and for some of them, it's their last market of the year.
- 12:46SPEAKER_06: So this gives them a chance to to get you know all of that Christmas cheer out to everybody.
- 12:51SPEAKER_04: So, what are the times then?
- 12:52SPEAKER_04: It Friday is 12 to 8.
- 12:55SPEAKER_04: Okay, and then Saturday is nine to seven.
- 12:58SPEAKER_04: Nice big day.
- 12:59SPEAKER_04: Yeah, that is for all locations.
- 13:01SPEAKER_04: Um, they're all open that same time frame on Friday and Saturday, and then Sunday, uh, it's just the square, the moose, and the Anderson Mansion, and they're open 11 to 3 on those.
- 13:11SPEAKER_04: I'm glad you said that.
- 13:12SPEAKER_10: Gotcha, gotcha.
- 13:13SPEAKER_10: I love that.
- 13:14SPEAKER_10: I love that.
- 13:14SPEAKER_10: So, all right, let's get into the fun stuff for the people planning their trips, like we just talked about busloads of people coming in right to the market this year.
- 13:21SPEAKER_10: What can they expect to see?
- 13:23SPEAKER_10: And is there anything brand new that we'd like to share about, you know, looking out for?
- 13:30SPEAKER_10: Let's see how we're gonna do that.
- 13:30SPEAKER_04: I don't know if there's any, I mean, I don't know if there's new in our space, but we do have way more food vendors.
- 13:36SPEAKER_04: We will have uh fire pits all along the walkway, and we're adding the lights that draped over the so there is new.
- 13:42SPEAKER_10: We got some new new lighting effects coming in.
- 13:45SPEAKER_06: Yes.
- 13:45SPEAKER_06: We also have a new design for one of our rooms that is typically kind of more kids' room where Professor Longhair and our storyteller are.
- 13:52SPEAKER_06: Um, John has worked her magic in that room, and it is gonna be phenomenal once we get it all put together.
- 13:58SPEAKER_06: It may be a little grinchy as well.
- 14:00SPEAKER_06: That's all I'm gonna say.
- 14:01SPEAKER_06: I don't want to give too much away, but I think um that will be amazing.
- 14:04SPEAKER_06: So we we like for everyone to visit all four of the buildings out at the fairgrounds because there's something different in each one.
- 14:10SPEAKER_06: We have a new photo op going up in the 4-H building that we've teamed with a couple of local artists, Audra Milberg and Amanda Craig.
- 14:18SPEAKER_06: Amanda Craig's suit.
- 14:19SPEAKER_06: Oh, yes.
- 14:20SPEAKER_06: AMA.
- 14:20SPEAKER_06: AMA.
- 14:21SPEAKER_06: Yes.
- 14:21SPEAKER_06: Yes, yes, yes.
- 14:21SPEAKER_05: Oh, they're they're precious.
- 14:22SPEAKER_06: Yes, we've teamed with AMA and they were out there checking out the space, and so they're gonna have this amazing photo backdrop.
- 14:28SPEAKER_06: I get to be a little creative and we'll have another photo backdrop that I'm putting together.
- 14:33SPEAKER_06: And then Kim is just taking Kim Rhodes is taking this amazing approach to decorating the outer part of the fairgrounds, not the vendor portion.
- 14:41SPEAKER_06: But so it will be the fence.
- 14:44SPEAKER_06: Kim's on the fairboard too, right?
- 14:45SPEAKER_06: Yes, yes, she's gonna be able to do that.
- 14:46SPEAKER_06: Oh, Kim's top up one.
- 14:47SPEAKER_06: Yeah, she's present.
- 14:49SPEAKER_06: President of the fairboard, and she is getting everyone out there all on board with the fairboard to get it decorated up, and she has some amazing plans.
- 14:56SPEAKER_06: So it will be fantastic.
- 14:58SPEAKER_06: I don't want to give it so much.
- 14:59SPEAKER_05: So you've got you've got kids' activities obviously.
- 15:01SPEAKER_05: You've got Professor Longhair.
- 15:02SPEAKER_05: I mean he's another lit.
- 15:04SPEAKER_04: Yes, and he has been with the market since the beginning.
- 15:07SPEAKER_04: Since the beginning, he just absolutely loves it.
- 15:09SPEAKER_04: He's in every year.
- 15:10SPEAKER_04: Yes.
- 15:11SPEAKER_04: The kids love it again.
- 15:12SPEAKER_05: So he's been in 36 years.
- 15:13SPEAKER_05: He's a magician, guys.
- 15:14SPEAKER_05: For those of you who don't know, yes.
- 15:16SPEAKER_05: Professor Longhair is a magician.
- 15:17SPEAKER_06: Yes, and he is fantastic.
- 15:18SPEAKER_06: Every kid that walks around the market has a balloon animal of a different shape, and I always want to stop him and ask him, What is what did he do?
- 15:24SPEAKER_06: What is that?
- 15:25SPEAKER_06: And they just love it.
- 15:26SPEAKER_06: And then we also have a storyteller that comes in between when Professor Longhair shows are to tell the Christmas story.
- 15:32SPEAKER_06: That's fantastic.
- 15:34SPEAKER_06: Yes, we have some cozy rugs for the kids to sit on and enjoy, and it's heated, and it'll just be fantastic.
- 15:40SPEAKER_05: You know, and one more thing I wanted to say to the listeners like if you've ever heard of Hobnob or or that, it's like a really big festival, market indoor.
- 15:49SPEAKER_05: That's what it reminds me of out at the fairgrounds because it looks like that.
- 15:54SPEAKER_05: You know, it just gives that, and people that's a big deal.
- 15:57SPEAKER_05: Have you ever heard of Hobnob, Chris?
- 15:58SPEAKER_10: Uh no.
- 15:59SPEAKER_05: It's like a girl, what would you it's like a girl?
- 16:01SPEAKER_05: It's a girls' weekend.
- 16:02SPEAKER_05: It's a girls' weekend, but it's like three to four stories in a building of vendors and artisans and merchants, and it's all like home decor.
- 16:10SPEAKER_05: Yes.
- 16:11SPEAKER_09: So a bunch of hobnob again.
- 16:12SPEAKER_06: And craft goods, yeah.
- 16:14SPEAKER_06: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 16:15SPEAKER_06: And at the heart, the market is a vendor the the market is a vendor fair.
- 16:18SPEAKER_06: Like that.
- 16:19SPEAKER_06: That was our goal originally was to give these people in the community a place to shop and give the vendors a place to sell their goods around Christmas time.
- 16:27SPEAKER_06: Love it.
- 16:28SPEAKER_06: And then we have just decided to make that into this Hallmark-esque setting for everyone to enjoy as well.
- 16:34SPEAKER_06: And we love creating, we're all creative people, and as adults, you don't often get that chance to create this amazing people.
- 16:43SPEAKER_06: So we really love pouring our heart and soul into this weekend and making it.
- 16:46SPEAKER_06: Will you have any music out there?
- 16:48SPEAKER_06: Yes.
- 16:49SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 16:49SPEAKER_06: Yes.
- 16:49SPEAKER_06: We play music in the buildings, and then we're also talking to some people who might play live.
- 16:54SPEAKER_06: We're not sure if we'll be able to get that worked out, but we are trying.
- 16:57SPEAKER_04: Love it.
- 16:58SPEAKER_04: Before they left town, they were in, they've just been on a trip and they won't be back until next week sometime.
- 17:03SPEAKER_10: So we'll we'll finalize all that with all this sounds like a great reason to make a day of it or a weekend or three days of it or whatever, right?
- 17:10SPEAKER_10: Yeah.
- 17:11SPEAKER_10: So whether people are coming, excuse me, to shop for Christmas gifts, grab something good to eat, enjoy the entertainment, or simply soak up the atmosphere, which the atmosphere is going to be just one of the main reasons I would go.
- 17:21SPEAKER_10: There's something special about having an event that gives families and friends a reason to spend time together right here in their hometown, right?
- 17:28SPEAKER_10: And or let it become their hometown when they come visit.
- 17:32SPEAKER_10: And that brings us that brings us to another important part of the event.
- 17:35SPEAKER_10: And you guys have touched on it a little bit, right?
- 17:37SPEAKER_10: What all that community support means beyond the market itself.
- 17:41SPEAKER_10: When people come out to enjoy the market, they aren't just having a great time, they're actually giving right back to the community.
- 17:47SPEAKER_04: Absolutely.
- 17:48SPEAKER_10: Can you explain how the entry fears fees are used to support local organizations?
- 17:53SPEAKER_10: What is the core mission?
- 17:55SPEAKER_04: It is just to find organizations that we also feel do a good job.
- 18:00SPEAKER_04: And so our our fees have gone to the animal shelter, sleep in heavenly peace, the lunch bunch, um, Crow's Boot and Shoe for their shoe service that they do with the shopping sprees.
- 18:11SPEAKER_04: We've also donated to the shopping spree.
- 18:13SPEAKER_04: I mean, I don't we were trying to find them all, which all those affect the community.
- 18:19SPEAKER_04: We're really very big with kids and animals and just families in general in need.
- 18:23SPEAKER_06: And Carlinville and McCoopin County based business.
- 18:26SPEAKER_06: And so your money goes right back into the community that has supported us.
- 18:31SPEAKER_06: And we don't just do the market event.
- 18:33SPEAKER_06: We have fundraising events at the fairgrounds with our music bingo and music trivia.
- 18:38SPEAKER_06: And the community always comes out in droves to support us.
- 18:41SPEAKER_06: And we could not have this market without them.
- 18:44SPEAKER_06: Uh, I love being a part of Carlinville, even though I wasn't born here.
- 18:47SPEAKER_06: I feel like I belong here.
- 18:48SPEAKER_06: And you're a Carlinvillean.
- 18:50SPEAKER_06: You are.
- 18:50SPEAKER_10: I've been here for almost 25 years.
- 18:52SPEAKER_06: So I think I qualify, but it's just amazing to see this community that comes out and supports.
- 18:58SPEAKER_06: And if you were at the courthouse when they announced that we won Hallmark, I it's like I get goosebumps thinking about that day.
- 19:06SPEAKER_06: It was so fun and so cool, and just never more of a community experience than being in that space at that time.
- 19:13SPEAKER_05: Yes.
- 19:14SPEAKER_05: I felt like I was living an alternate.
- 19:15SPEAKER_05: I thought I felt like I was in a movie.
- 19:18SPEAKER_05: Okay, no, you I was having an existential experience.
- 19:20SPEAKER_05: And then I'm like, yeah, this is real.
- 19:23SPEAKER_05: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 19:24SPEAKER_01: It was good.
- 19:25SPEAKER_01: No, yeah, this is real.
- 19:26SPEAKER_06: As soon as the lady said she's from Hallmark, Amanda and I looked at each other and I go, shut up.
- 19:31SPEAKER_06: Dude, for her to play that joke.
- 19:33SPEAKER_06: I love that they played that joke.
- 19:35SPEAKER_06: It was so good.
- 19:36SPEAKER_06: I mean, it was so, and that is what also made it feel like a movie because we all showed up and got duped.
- 19:41SPEAKER_06: And it's like, who pulls that off?
- 19:43SPEAKER_10: Mayor Doug Downey in here recording a podcast.
- 19:46SPEAKER_10: The day before.
- 19:47SPEAKER_10: The day before, right?
- 19:48SPEAKER_10: And he talked about Midwest Living magazine coming into this picture, blah, blah, blah, blah.
- 19:54SPEAKER_10: And and his his facial expression.
- 19:56SPEAKER_05: Doug can't lie.
- 19:57SPEAKER_10: Doug can't lie, right?
- 19:58SPEAKER_10: And so so we were done recording and all of that.
- 20:01SPEAKER_10: And Caitlin's like, would it be cool if we won?
- 20:04SPEAKER_09: And his face just was like, and I was like, I was like, dude, we won.
- 20:08SPEAKER_09: Oh my god, we won and what I'm like, Caitlin, zip your lip.
- 20:10SPEAKER_09: We can't say anything.
- 20:11SPEAKER_09: Just shut up.
- 20:12SPEAKER_09: So here we're not blowing the lid on this.
- 20:13SPEAKER_05: No, I did, I did immediately call my husband, but he didn't call tell anybody.
- 20:16SPEAKER_05: You know, I had to tell somebody.
- 20:18SPEAKER_05: Uh-huh.
- 20:18SPEAKER_04: I was like, dude, no, no, no, they don't count.
- 20:21SPEAKER_06: No, no, no.
- 20:22SPEAKER_04: No, no, I mean, you can tell your husband.
- 20:24SPEAKER_04: That's included.
- 20:25SPEAKER_05: Because if they tell our safety, they're going down.
- 20:27SPEAKER_05: Six feet under.
- 20:28SPEAKER_05: Yes.
- 20:28SPEAKER_10: But I mean See, poor Chris, he always gets talk about getting put six feet under.
- 20:32SPEAKER_10: Yeah.
- 20:32SPEAKER_10: Chris, I am sorry for your so I mean for him.
- 20:35SPEAKER_05: That was so funny.
- 20:36SPEAKER_10: He never officially said his face was like, you know, he just wanted to bump right bust the guts.
- 20:43SPEAKER_07: Snore again.
- 20:44SPEAKER_07: Oh my gosh.
- 20:45SPEAKER_10: Well, definitely, you know, the the core mission and is is the Christmas and Cardinal group of 501c3?
- 20:52SPEAKER_06: Yes, we are.
- 20:53SPEAKER_06: Okay, great.
- 20:54SPEAKER_06: That helps people feel yes.
- 20:55SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 20:56SPEAKER_10: They feel better about the money is going to look at it.
- 20:58SPEAKER_10: Absolutely.
- 20:58SPEAKER_10: And being distributed properly.
- 21:00SPEAKER_10: And that's the main thing.
- 21:00SPEAKER_10: We talked about that on past.
- 21:01SPEAKER_05: With Project Third Day and Swable, we just wanted to eat people to know.
- 21:05SPEAKER_05: Because like he said, you got to be careful with who you donate to.
- 21:07SPEAKER_05: So you do.
- 21:08SPEAKER_04: And the the funny thing about that is being a 501c3, we don't ask for donation.
- 21:13SPEAKER_04: We we sustain ourselves solely on what we make off of our vendors and our fundraisers.
- 21:18SPEAKER_04: So, you know, when you're giving that dollar at the door, it truly is going back.
- 21:22SPEAKER_04: And honestly, we add a little bit to it, but it goes back into the community.
- 21:27SPEAKER_05: Yeah, and the food pantry I saw was on your list too.
- 21:30SPEAKER_05: So that's the Carmenville Food Pantry.
- 21:32SPEAKER_05: That's right in there, too.
- 21:32SPEAKER_05: So great organizations.
- 21:34SPEAKER_06: And we've given to the Carlinville School Foundation in the past as well to help support the school district.
- 21:40SPEAKER_06: And so we and and all this affects all of us.
- 21:43SPEAKER_06: We all have kids in the community, and we all care about how the community is represented.
- 21:50SPEAKER_06: And then also how we take care of the people in our community because they take so good of care of us.
- 21:55SPEAKER_10: And and that's what makes this event m even more meaningful, right?
- 21:58SPEAKER_10: People may come through the gates thinking about.
- 22:00SPEAKER_10: shopping, food, Christmas fun, but their participation also is supporting all these other organizations.
- 22:05SPEAKER_06: Yes.
- 22:05SPEAKER_06: Yes.
- 22:05SPEAKER_06: Yes.
- 22:06SPEAKER_10: And that's doing an important part, right, for the people and the families throughout our community.
- 22:10SPEAKER_10: Yeah.
- 22:11SPEAKER_10: So it's it's a reminder that when a community comes together for something positive, the impact can reach well beyond the event itself.
- 22:18SPEAKER_10: Right.
- 22:18SPEAKER_10: And I think that we get these bus.
- 22:21SPEAKER_10: I don't know why I'm getting goosebumps from Maine.
- 22:25SPEAKER_10: It's just, I'm just it it's it's just awesome because I didn't know there was such Hallmark mania out there.
- 22:32SPEAKER_10: Right?
- 22:32SPEAKER_10: Yes.
- 22:32SPEAKER_10: There are people that have been watching Christmas Hallmark movies for months already.
- 22:37SPEAKER_10: I know.
- 22:37SPEAKER_06: Oh year long.
- 22:38SPEAKER_06: Absolutely.
- 22:39SPEAKER_06: Or all year wrong.
- 22:40SPEAKER_10: Right?
- 22:40SPEAKER_10: Yes.
- 22:40SPEAKER_10: And it's amazing that every Hallmark story there's always someone that gets together.
- 22:45SPEAKER_10: There's a dilemma and they fall in love and at the end it's all and one of they're ne they never live they're never from the same town.
- 22:51SPEAKER_05: One of them always moves to the town.
- 22:53SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 22:53SPEAKER_05: Or they're coming back home.
- 22:55SPEAKER_10: Yeah yes how the town they changed.
- 22:57SPEAKER_10: Yeah yeah yeah why am I getting goosebumps again?
- 23:00SPEAKER_06: I think Chris is trying to throw Chris is an artist script.
- 23:03SPEAKER_10: He's gonna be all right well I tell you what it's just it's incredible what all you do for Carlville, right?
- 23:12SPEAKER_10: Where can people go right now to find out all the final details about Christmas in Carlville?
- 23:18SPEAKER_10: I know we talked about the dates.
- 23:19SPEAKER_04: Yeah that's a great question because I still don't have all of the details from all of the locations but as we get them in we are updating.
- 23:25SPEAKER_04: Christmas incarnal dot com is our website where we have a lot of information there.
- 23:30SPEAKER_04: If you go under the locations tab then it gives you the option just to see what the schedule is and what the vendor list is.
- 23:35SPEAKER_04: And then also on our Facebook page starting in November I'll start sharing more information.
- 23:41SPEAKER_10: Which when this drops it'll be in November so it will be an active so people can see what vendors are going to be there.
- 23:48SPEAKER_04: Yeah and we do vendor highlights so I try to get from all 500 locations that we have vendors at this year.
- 23:54SPEAKER_06: I think there's eight of them they keep opening more so yeah so we keep adding more information as we get it.
- 23:59SPEAKER_05: And I feel like Amanda has been very modest I've known Amanda since I was 19 years old.
- 24:03SPEAKER_05: I used to work with her but she at Walmart dude at the photo lab and I had so much fun.
- 24:08SPEAKER_10: Oh see yeah no that's why I wasn't surprised when you came in at 5 Mm.
- 24:12SPEAKER_05: Yes she already knows.
- 24:13SPEAKER_05: Yep I know okay yep but she's being modest about how much she does okay she is the one that really I mean even the square people like you're still organizing all of that communication to the public organizing that entire website which we know websites do yes not for the week we know and then you're doing the Facebook yes you're communicating with all this so not only are you doing the fairgrounds you are the lead of the advertising I guess you'd say marketing for the entire Christmas in Carlinville.
- 24:44SPEAKER_06: So I just want to give you a little shout out absolutely yes Amanda works tirelessly with all of the groups involved in all of the different locations and this year especially we've added a location just last week like it is just crazy was that Country Gypsy no the Farm Bureau building oh that's right they have opened up now as well so so Amanda does a fantastic job she's so incredibly organized with keeping everybody the most organized human I've ever met I guess I could throw up a building out in the front lot here now and then you I mean they would not say no yeah we joked at a meeting that we were going to have people start opening their basements up and they said we wouldn't say no.
- 25:19SPEAKER_06: So shut up so I love it.
- 25:21SPEAKER_05: Whatever you got we'll take if there's a vendor you can put there Chris you could honestly do a Christmas open house in here like during that day it's so pretty Sunday the Christmas decks are going up.
- 25:30SPEAKER_05: Okay I can't wait.
- 25:31SPEAKER_06: We'll do a little bit he has the best Christmas decoration and and there may or may not be a 20 foot tall Santa and snowman out by the Big Long sign yes and that's what we want to see which is all of the interest in for Harlanville to be so incredibly Christmas decorated.
- 25:46SPEAKER_06: Right.
- 25:46SPEAKER_06: So I love that you are on a main way in and everyone is just going to all those busloads of people the busloads the busloads of people are going to see that as they roll in because they'll probably be coming they will interstate and stuff we'll see the back of these big Santa's and snowman up there just going to be amazing.
- 26:03SPEAKER_10: Yeah well Amanda I know I I've known Amanda since she was probably 19.
- 26:07SPEAKER_10: Yeah so yeah look how it goes around yeah so but she is humble and I and she does do a lot.
- 26:14SPEAKER_10: Amanda Stephanie thank you both so much for taking time out of your day to come in and for sharing the story behind the Christmas market here in Carnival and for everything you and your committee do to keep this incredible tradition alive.
- 26:27SPEAKER_10: Okay.
- 26:28SPEAKER_10: That's amazing 36 years is something we're celebrating.
- 26:31SPEAKER_10: Think about how many families have walked through that market over the years.
- 26:34SPEAKER_10: We literally can pause a moment just think about that on average you have 3,000 times that by 36 years.
- 26:40SPEAKER_10: It's just yeah Caitlin's head just exploded she's gonna do math all Lord's gonna do math okay but how many memories have been made how many gifts have been found and how many people have come together to celebrate the Christmas season right here in our community which is the part of that Midwest that we talk about right how what's the number 108,000 dude 108,000 people.
- 27:01SPEAKER_04: It's probably more than that really spiked ears and and all that well and that 3000 doesn't include your other vendors that shop your stuff your your volunteers that are shopping and the vendors volunteers that are helping them like that number is is greater than that.
- 27:14SPEAKER_10: But still it is but what really stands out is that this is about so much more than decorations vendors food and the holiday entertainment.
- 27:22SPEAKER_10: It's about people who care enough to volunteer their time businesses and vendors who participate community members who show up and an organization that turns all that support into something meaningful for others.
- 27:33SPEAKER_10: And when the entry fees go towards helping local charitable organizations it gives every visitor another reason to feel good about being part of the experience.
- 27:42SPEAKER_10: You're not just attending a Christmas market you're helping support the community you call home.
- 27:47SPEAKER_10: That's what makes communities like Carnival special and why Hallmark probably chose us right it's not just the places we build or the events we put on it's the people who step up the traditions we we protect right and the way we come together to make life a little better for the people around us even from Maine.
- 28:06SPEAKER_10: So if you haven't experienced the Carnival Christmas market make plans to come out this year bring your family invite your friends from across the country or other countries right yes support the vendors enjoy the entertainment and take a little time to appreciate everything that goes into making this event possible.
- 28:23SPEAKER_10: If you see someone running around in the uh Christmas in Carnival shirts thank them say thank you for this thank you for what you're doing right and a huge thank you to our 10x partners as well uh SIPs coffee for being our official drink sponsor for allowing us to bring in all these organizations like like the Chris the Christmas in Carnival group right and to everyone listening thank you for spending part of your day with us here on designing and building the Midwest one community at a time if you enjoyed this conversation today please subscribe to this podcast share this episode with a friend and help us spread the word about the people and the organizations doing great things throughout our region like the Christmas and Carnival committee Amanda and Stephanie right because at the end of the day building a strong community takes more than bricks and mortar it takes people who care people who serve and people who are willing to make a damn difference.
