Transcript
- 0:00Just pre-first by saying, this is a bonus episode. It's not
- 0:05many related, but it is just a little homage to our queen, Sophie Courage. She is an
- 0:10incredible human being she was born 33 years ago, and we're so thankful that she was
- 0:15born. You know, the curve wouldn't be what it is today, and I am very, very grateful for our
- 0:21friendship. She's truly amazing and happy birthday, Sophie.
- 0:26So, yesterday was Sophie's birthday. I know. You look older, babe. Thank you.
- 0:32So many wrinkles. I was actually my sister wrote me a birthday card that said happy
- 0:3732nd. I was like, I'm 33. Oh, God, in the fact, you have the character of, I'm actually
- 0:42a year older. I was like, I'm a year older. And you kind of lose the numbers when
- 0:46you get older. I remember asking my parents how old are you? I don't know. And I'm like,
- 0:49when I was younger, I was like, how do you not know? Like, when I was seven, I've only had
- 0:53like seven birthdays, but whereas now I'm like, oh, is it 35? Yeah. I don't know. It's
- 0:58funny, because I also was having, I was having gentlemen, some friends, I started who are
- 1:01a couple of years younger. And I think I have a complex about being the older one. And
- 1:07I'm just like, it's, it's only made that kids, they don't care. Yeah, yeah. You know, like,
- 1:10I'm pretty sure they're like 29, 30. And they're getting married in a year. And I'm like,
- 1:14oh, my God. I'm always 34 at their wedding. Girl. Whoa. No, sorry. I'm not trying to say
- 1:19that. It's old. But I'm just like, whoa. Like, you know, I'm like, getting towards 40. We
- 1:24all are. Yeah. Or over. And it's just, it's like the age thing you're right. Like it's such
- 1:29and I've seen heaps of people posting like a friend of ours puts something up, being like,
- 1:34still feel 22, like she turned 37 or so. But it's still parting like I'm 22. Like, yeah,
- 1:40wow. Do we just get older and feel like I think I'm going to feel 28 at heart, maybe my whole
- 1:46life. Hopefully, just some better decisions. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. No, that's something that's
- 1:51great. Cause like I called my grandma yesterday. It was the first person I spoke to in the
- 1:55morning, bless her heart. She's just joined. She's a silver swan. So she's joined a dance
- 1:59class. Oh my gosh. With all eight year olds, they're doing ballet. And she like bought
- 2:05tights for her and a great hop. And she's the name silver swan. I'm a silver swan. Anyway,
- 2:10I was facetiming her and I was just like, oh my gosh. Like, that's going to be met, you
- 2:15know, and she was looking at her face and the thing like, oh, God, no, I don't want to look
- 2:18at her. I'm like, it will be. We'll look back when we're like 80. Yeah. Be going to dance
- 2:23classes, feel 28. And they're like, wow. Yeah. I, um, yeah, look at photos when I'm younger.
- 2:29And I'm like, gosh, I should have really appreciated my, all the collagen. Yeah. I know. I'm like,
- 2:35oh, that's nice. Um, I saw as I was like, did you get my present? I said, no, I didn't. So
- 2:42I was secretly left on a doorstep. It was like a present with a little candle in it and a
- 2:46card. Yeah. And then it was food. Oh, my God. Was it a cake? I'm not going to say, yeah.
- 2:51Oh, my God. Anyway, and I dropped it off and I like got back on my bike. And then there
- 2:55was this homeless man, like walking down your street. And I was like, he'd be stoked. I was
- 3:01like, I'm just going to wait. And I kind of watched him, like not long enough. He could have
- 3:06definitely turned around and grabbed it. And like, that's funny. And then I was so just
- 3:09like, did you get my present? She's like, no, I was like, let's go. Well, at least he might
- 3:14have enjoyed it. Oh, see if he enjoyed it. I'm like, yeah. Yeah. Yeah. But I was like, this
- 3:19typical London, isn't it? But anyway, hopefully it's there when you go home today or not
- 3:24still outside. But you know what I mean? Yeah. I'm sure some surely someone in my house
- 3:28sort of collected. Yeah. Hopefully. Yeah. Thanks. I was so cute. I came downstairs and my
- 3:32flat had put like big happy birthday signs up. Oh. And like balloons and bought like lots of my
- 3:37food and got me a voucher for hackney cycles, which is this like quite cool bike shop.
- 3:43And then Photoshopped my face onto like a professional cyclist. It was like the ski news.
- 3:48I had a thing on the side. I was like, oh my god. Yes. I'm going to be a cyclist. I'm so excited.
- 3:52I love it when people go to like that much effort. It was so funny. Yeah. I have no idea what's
- 3:58going on. We just got in here. In fact, we're not doing the coup. I'm like, well, what are we
- 4:02doing? Now I'm feeling a bit scared. So I was like, during this prep sheet called economics 101
- 4:07as like a decoy. So for like tags, you know, she's like, hey, babe, just let me know when you finish
- 4:12with this one. And I was like, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, there's the prep sheet. I was like, there's
- 4:16nothing in here. Like, what are we talking about? Little decoy. Anyway. So this is a little
- 4:22bit of a birthday podcast. Okay. So you always make everyone around. Oh my god. I'm
- 4:31on my period. So I'm just like, I'm so emotional to them. I'm like, oh god, Angela. If
- 4:38this is going to be cute and nice, like, no, you always make everyone around. If you're
- 4:43so incredibly special. And so I wanted to make you feel just as special on your birthday.
- 4:49So I thought long and hard for like months. I shit you not. You like nailed it with my
- 4:56birthday last year. And I was like, come on. I was like, come on. If you were Sophie Horat,
- 5:00what would you want? What would you want to do? I'm also not the creator one. So I was like,
- 5:04come on, Vic. They created me. They created me. And then I got it. And I was like, I'm my
- 5:10fucking god. I've nailed it. I have nailed this. I was like, she loves Elizabeth Day. You're
- 5:17kidding. Don't get excited. Please don't get excited. I was like, okay, she loves Elizabeth Day.
- 5:24So I contacted her and I was like, hey, this is a situation. I think the little snippet
- 5:28that, like, you mentioned the podcast. And I was like, please, please, please, can you help
- 5:31us out? Like, she's obsessed. Kind of weirdly. Oh, no, you didn't. Did you make me so
- 5:35nervous? Yeah, I mean, a little bit. It was no response. I was like, okay, shit. Like, Vic,
- 5:39I've got to get creative here. Unfortunately, I didn't get her on the podcast. But I'm so
- 5:44scared. I feel like she's going to jump out from behind the couch and I'm just not prepared
- 5:48for it. Oh, you got her book. Thanks so much, Vic. Really cute. Rethan. Not nearly as
- 5:56exciting. I wish I could get Elizabeth Day, but I'll work on it for next year. I promise.
- 5:59Oh, my God. I actually, I know it's like, I'm so gassy. Don't, don't be
- 6:03got it. This is amazing. Oh, my God. This is amazing. I really tried. I love her. Oh, my God,
- 6:09I'm so stoked. I've actually heard a lot about these books. Oh, how to fail? Because this is her.
- 6:13Oh, my God. Yeah, it's a new one. Yeah. Yeah. And I'm tired. Oh, thanks. I'm actually
- 6:18stoked. Okay. That's a really good present. So then I had to get everything you have on
- 6:22again. I was like, okay, well, that is a dead end is a dead end. And you know, I sat there
- 6:27and I was like, damn it. Okay. What? Can I get soft that she would appreciate? And then I
- 6:32was like, you know what? I love what you did for me last year. Doesn't hear it. Fuck.
- 6:38I didn't get you. Doesn't hear it. But I didn't get you. I'm sorry. It's going to be great.
- 6:45No, I, I know we've had a bit of a shit week. And so I thought what a way to make you feel
- 6:52special than to get all your friends here as well. Not too mean. And tell them how much they
- 6:59love you. Another beautiful year of you. So lucky to be one of your buddies. You're absolutely
- 7:05hilarious. Creative Brain is one of the beasts. 33 is going to be killer. Love you always
- 7:10and always. Oh, you are literally a sunshine array in all of our lives. Have the best day
- 7:19and an even better year. Love you so much. Happy birthday, gorgeous human. So the
- 7:25number one thing I love about you is how you approach life. You've got such a short time
- 7:30on this planet that you really act like that. You run heat first into life and doing so
- 7:35creates so many beautiful things, friendships, morning darts, parties and benches. And, you
- 7:40know, I've just casually co-found a platform and parents, tens of thousands of women. So
- 7:45thanks for all that you are and all that you do. Happy birthday, Sophie. It might probably
- 7:50be a awesome day. You didn't even call it all shit. Creative, who are what you've become?
- 7:56It does seem like only yesterday you're doing classic Sophie things like washing your feet
- 8:01in the dog bowl instead of the bucket that was right next to it. Have a good day and we'll
- 8:06talk to you soon. Bye. Happy birthday. Happy birthday, Sophie.
- 8:13Thank you for being a constant warm of entertainment for me and the best sister a girl could
- 8:20have. Happy birthday from your favourite father. And your wicked stepmother. We're
- 8:25super public. I'll be there to celebrate with you. So you never failed to entertain us
- 8:30with your wild escapades. Remember when you broke down and around about
- 8:34the rush hour traffic and I came to rescue you. You turned into a social media
- 8:39event fully the chaos instead of helping out. But you did get two thousand likes.
- 8:45And I'll never forget when I get the value out after the Christchurch earthquake,
- 8:50you lost everything. So I gave you a trip to Melbourne to see your friend along with
- 8:54my credit card and a three thousand dollar budget to replace the essentials.
- 8:59The insurance came through. I gave you to max it out to the two to 80 to the
- 9:03half thousand dollars. We love you to bits. Have a handlazing birthday.
- 9:08So cute. But someone's that wasn't in there was mine.
- 9:13You know, I'm so emotional right now. I just want to say happy birthday.
- 9:20I'm so proud to call you my friend, but not only my friend, my business partner.
- 9:24The person that's been the most time with the person I have the most intense
- 9:27relationship with. The person who's taught me so much about myself.
- 9:30The person that's made me laugh the most. I really could go on and on.
- 9:34I think everything everyone said in there was so spot on. He brings so much joy
- 9:38to everyone's lives. Oh God.
- 9:45If you want an incredible special person to manage, truly feel sorry for anyone who
- 9:49doesn't have a sofa all right in their lives. I hope you're super proud of who
- 9:53you've become and what you've achieved because I definitely am.
- 9:56Your family is your friend zone. I know your granddad definitely would be.
- 10:01I'm so excited. For many more years ahead with you.
- 10:06And I hope that you've heard an incredible 33 birthday.
- 10:14Why do birthdays come around once a year? I feel like everyone should feel this
- 10:17special. I don't know. Yeah. Well, sorry, you should feel this special
- 10:20more than once a year. Well, I think it's just because life so fast and busy
- 10:24and we just forget how finite and quick it happens. And I think honestly,
- 10:29it's really important, like not in a self-indulgent way, but to pause around
- 10:33your birthday and just have take a second or like it also reminds me like how
- 10:37special I felt yesterday when people made an effort to make me feel that way.
- 10:41How much I want to do that for other people to do for me.
- 10:44What should I make? Should I make some 33 money goals maybe?
- 10:47Three things you're proud of financially in the last year.
- 10:50And the last second year and then three goals. Okay.
- 10:54Okay, three things I'm proud of for the year that's been when it comes to my
- 10:59finances would be getting my emergency, my like fuck you fund up.
- 11:04Yeah. And you just check it now because this time last year I had essentially
- 11:10nothing in it because I'd used all of it. So my emergency fund is $8,862.
- 11:19Amazing. Yeah. That's huge. That's amazing. Yeah, New Zealand dollars.
- 11:25And that definitely gives me peace of mind. Should anything happen? There's something there.
- 11:30So that's been massive. I would say, actually, do you know what?
- 11:33I paid my whole student loan off. Yeah. And I did it in a lump sum.
- 11:37Like as I've been chipping away at it for years and years, but I never really understood
- 11:42the concept of pay off your highest interest debt first.
- 11:48And being overseas when you have a New Zealand student loan,
- 11:52you get really high interest. And so I was just like, do you know what?
- 11:56I'm just going to pay that off. So I think I had like 8,000 left and I did a lump sum
- 12:00which I was stoked about. So I haven't technically debt free going into my
- 12:0530, 30, yeah. That's amazing. Yeah. And then the third thing.
- 12:10Do you know, okay, this is kind of a strange learning.
- 12:13I'm often the one that searches and this is definitely come from my dad.
- 12:16Search is for a deal. So like searches for like the cheapest flights,
- 12:20even if I have to get up at like 1 a.m. in the morning, but then I end up spending
- 12:23more on accommodation for the extra night. You know, just stuff like that.
- 12:27Like I really struggled in the past to bite the bullet or even small things like
- 12:32if I could not pay rent for a month, but it meant that I was like hopping around
- 12:36house sitting house. Like I would do things like that that were so stressful
- 12:41and like there's the instability really affected me so much, but I kind of
- 12:46would do anything for a dollar or for to save a bit. Yeah.
- 12:49I think I've made that mistake so many times now that I'm now at a point where
- 12:53I don't choose the cheap option if it's going to really affect my mental health,
- 12:58which is actually massive. Yeah.
- 13:00So I'd say that's been like a real a win. It even just things like I think
- 13:04valuing my time and my health holistically, if it means spending money on it,
- 13:09has been like a real shift. That's super important. Yeah.
- 13:13Because the amount of times that I've been like, oh, I can like, I can save
- 13:16$200 or, you know, and I would, but I'm like, but it is my time or my
- 13:21mental health worth what I'm saving. And up until now, I always would have said,
- 13:26yeah, yeah, so worth it. But even just, you know, in the last few months,
- 13:30I've been house sitting for some of my friends. And I probably would have gone
- 13:34and like made an effort to fill my room for the 10 days I was away.
- 13:37Or, you know, like, because I'm aware of like how expensive rent is in London.
- 13:41But the stress and like overwhelm that that would have given me,
- 13:45comparatively to the payoff of saving 300 pounds or whatever,
- 13:49I started to realise like what isn't isn't worth my stress.
- 13:53And then looking forward to this year, I would say three goals.
- 13:57I've got one for you.
- 13:59Buying a house. Yeah.
- 14:01Very exciting. Yeah. I'd love to buy a house this year.
- 14:04I'm trying to figure out how the F to do it because obviously when you're
- 14:08working for yourself, it's a bit more difficult. But I kind of have,
- 14:11I'm backing myself that I can figure it out.
- 14:13And I've got a few really amazing people in my corner, like helping
- 14:17to direct me because I put something actually up on an Instagram,
- 14:21a couple of maybe like a week or two ago, about how I'd been struggling with
- 14:25mortgage brokers and so many people messaged being like,
- 14:28I'm self-employed and I've had the same issue. Well, I got told no three times.
- 14:33And then nine times whatever was. Yeah.
- 14:35So I think a goal this year would be like to step over that hurdle.
- 14:39Because probably for like five years, I've said to you,
- 14:41I'd loved my house, but I don't know how hard it is when you work for yourself.
- 14:44So that's why I want to get to a place where I can spend money on
- 14:48whether it be clothes or holidays without feeling guilty.
- 14:51I really want to get to a point where I am very clear about where my money goes
- 14:56and I enjoy spending it in all of those places, knowing that kind of like
- 15:01detaching the emotion that I have so tightly wound up on the way I spend money.
- 15:06And like using a money diary and being more wears differently helped.
- 15:10And then maybe thirdly, I would love to get an MX.
- 15:15Yes. Oh my God. Yes. I want to get an MX.
- 15:18I'm not encouraging you to go into it. Do you know what it is?
- 15:21I want to get an MX so that I can and use it properly.
- 15:24Yeah, use it responsibly. Yeah.
- 15:26So that I can use the points to pay for flights.
- 15:30Because apparently that's a thing and we speak about this in the world's biggest investing climate
- 15:34because we do a little deep dive on American experience as an investment.
- 15:38Yeah. Yeah. Those would be my things. Can you write them down on me?
- 15:41I have. Yeah.
- 15:42I actually think that's kind of a cool thing.
- 15:44If it's your birthday anytime soon.
- 15:46Yeah.
- 15:47Maybe do the same thing. Think of like three things you're proud of financially.
- 15:51And then looking to the year ahead, three things that you want to set in place for yourself.
- 15:55Oh, because start thinking about mine. I've got a few months.
- 15:57Yeah. Oh, God, now I'm going to have to really get like Warren Buffet on or something for you.
- 16:02No, please don't because then it's like every year I'm going to have to like.
- 16:05Oh, you just every year is going to be like this like big dick energy of like who can outdo out of birthday me.
- 16:11Yeah.
- 16:12But I love it. I find it exciting.
- 16:14Yeah.
- 16:15But you're the creative ones. You're always going to be nervous.
- 16:19Okay. What I'll do is I'll create all these ideas that you can still in return.
- 16:23You'll just write down.
- 16:24I'm like, what am I going to do?
- 16:26Oh, wow, it wasn't such a good idea.
- 16:28Yeah.
- 16:29So they'd actually be super helpful.
- 16:31I love like a wish list.
- 16:33Anyway, I hope that this wasn't too awfully important for you to listen to.
- 16:37No.
- 16:38I mean, it's a little bonus of birthday.
- 16:41Yeah.
- 16:42We love you.
- 16:43Thanks. That's really nice.
- 16:45Love you too.
