- 0:00Speaker 1: Look at Howard Jones. Hi, Howard, how are you here?
- 0:06Speaker 1: A look at this? Howard? Well, come on over.
- 0:14Speaker 2: Yeah, thank you.
- 0:15Speaker 1: So we can just stop doing what we're doing here.
- 0:18Speaker 2: The news isn't important. The news Howard's here.
- 0:22Speaker 3: Just talk about Donald Trump. We don't want to do that.
- 0:25Speaker 3: How are things very good?
- 0:27Speaker 4: Thank you very much? Yes, so pleased to be back
- 0:30Speaker 4: here in Salt Lake City.
- 0:31Speaker 1: Well, yeah, and you are. You have a devoted fan
- 0:34Speaker 1: base here.
- 0:35Speaker 2: Yes, it is a great owner to have that.
- 0:38Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 0:38Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean every time I come, I get such
- 0:41Speaker 4: a beautiful welcome.
- 0:42Speaker 2: I mean, you know, because I've been coming since nineteen
- 0:45Speaker 2: eighty four.
- 0:45Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, Like quite a lot of people I'm meeting
- 0:51Speaker 4: weren't even born then.
- 0:52Speaker 3: So people remember you vividly. You played one of our
- 0:58Speaker 3: first shows up at Park Quest. Yes, and you were
- 1:01Speaker 3: wearing a bright yellow suit. Yes, and it was people
- 1:04Speaker 3: just have never forgotten that.
- 1:07Speaker 2: Well, yeah, I have such great memories of that.
- 1:09Speaker 4: Like the tree people that I called them, the people
- 1:13Speaker 4: who are like up right right high in the in
- 1:16Speaker 4: the in the hills. I guess they're right up in
- 1:20Speaker 4: the trees. So I've called them that and they still
- 1:22Speaker 4: come to.
- 1:26Speaker 3: It's really kind you have this devoted fanbase here and
- 1:30Speaker 3: it's I think it's just remarking. Are there other places
- 1:33Speaker 3: in the world that have that kind of concentration of
- 1:36Speaker 3: fans for you?
- 1:37Speaker 4: You know, it's no, it's like it's quiet. I mean,
- 1:46Speaker 4: every all the other British bands and even American bands
- 1:51Speaker 4: kind of you can tell they're a little bit envious
- 1:53Speaker 4: of my following here and because nobody else can do
- 1:58Speaker 4: sort of gigs. So yeah, so it's yeah, I mean,
- 2:02Speaker 4: you know, and it goes right back to the those
- 2:04Speaker 4: times and you know, thank you for playing my records
- 2:07Speaker 4: on on on the radio, and you know, it just
- 2:11Speaker 4: made that connection. It was it was opening up for
- 2:13Speaker 4: you rhythmics, wasn't it. That was the first Yeah, And
- 2:16Speaker 4: and it was just just so it was very special.
- 2:21Speaker 3: So do I remember correctly you kind of got your
- 2:24Speaker 3: you got flung into popularity or you were were you
- 2:28Speaker 3: in the European Song Contest?
- 2:30Speaker 4: No no, no, no, no no. It was all a
- 2:33Speaker 4: completely like grassroots thing with me playing like you know,
- 2:40Speaker 4: literally building it from no fans to you know, playing
- 2:45Speaker 4: tiny clubs and pubs. And then we used to get
- 2:49Speaker 4: we used to hire coaches, you know, to bring people
- 2:52Speaker 4: to gigs when I played outside of my hometown which
- 2:55Speaker 4: was high Wickham and in the end we had like
- 2:57Speaker 4: six coaches of people would come me up to London
- 3:00Speaker 4: to the Marquee Club and things like that. So, you know,
- 3:03Speaker 4: because in those days you just had to bring your
- 3:05Speaker 4: own crowd because you know that you can't expect to
- 3:07Speaker 4: go anywhere and anybody turn up.
- 3:09Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 3:09Speaker 2: So and that's how we that's how we built it.
- 3:12Speaker 1: You still live in Maidenhead, Yeah, Maidenhead.
- 3:14Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 3:14Speaker 3: I think we were at your place twice in our
- 3:17Speaker 3: in our place having lunch with you and Jan and
- 3:21Speaker 3: is your is your son still acting?
- 3:24Speaker 4: He's now working sort of on on the other side. Yes,
- 3:29Speaker 4: that's right, working on the other side of the of it.
- 3:32Speaker 4: He's he's like showrunner for some things that they're doing
- 3:37Speaker 4: for Apple TV, so he's there in New York City.
- 3:42Speaker 3: Yeah, it's And how's this this tour being work with
- 3:45Speaker 3: the with the other bands and you just started right.
- 3:48Speaker 4: Yes, that's right. I think we're like five shows in there.
- 3:52Speaker 4: It's going really well. I mean the idea is is
- 3:55Speaker 4: to make it a thing. You know, the things can
- 3:58Speaker 4: only get better at all. We're going to do it
- 4:00Speaker 4: every year and I get to choose to have my
- 4:03Speaker 4: friends come along with me and play. So that's that's
- 4:06Speaker 4: the that's the idea, and it's really great. It's a
- 4:10Speaker 4: great night of music because everyone's you know, like different,
- 4:14Speaker 4: you know, it's different. It's like different genre modern English
- 4:18Speaker 4: and English beat and Wang Chung and yeah, and and
- 4:22Speaker 4: Richard Blade is sort of doing a bit of education
- 4:26Speaker 4: about how great the eighties was.
- 4:30Speaker 1: Do you do you? I mean, people come and they
- 4:32Speaker 1: want to hear they want to hear the old songs, songs. Yeah,
- 4:37Speaker 1: I know you have a new song. I think we
- 4:39Speaker 1: have it here.
- 4:39Speaker 5: We're going to play it coming up.
- 4:40Speaker 4: Do you do some new material? Yeah, we're playing the
- 4:44Speaker 4: new single. It's the first track we're playing. It's quite.
- 4:49Speaker 4: It's it's quite. I didn't intend it, but the song's
- 4:52Speaker 4: going to stand up. And sometimes, you know, at the
- 4:55Speaker 4: beginning of the show you have to you need.
- 4:58Speaker 2: To encourage people to rise.
- 5:02Speaker 4: But it's not wasn't the intended meaning of the song,
- 5:04Speaker 4: which is about, you know, like everyone's voice is important,
- 5:09Speaker 4: and you know, we all have the power to influence
- 5:13Speaker 4: our friends, our family and our work mates, and you know,
- 5:17Speaker 4: you know, don't hide away. You know, you know, you.
- 5:20Speaker 4: You your voice is very important, so speak out.
- 5:22Speaker 3: Your you know, your music is all I think. I
- 5:25Speaker 3: can't think of a song that's that's not very postive.
- 5:30Speaker 3: I have a positive kind of uplifting You don't.
- 5:33Speaker 1: You don't have the tendency to brood a lot and
- 5:36Speaker 1: be depressive.
- 5:37Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, I mean that's always been my thing.
- 5:40Speaker 4: You know. I always loved music that really, you know,
- 5:43Speaker 4: encouraged me and made me think. And so that's what
- 5:49Speaker 4: I do with my song. That there's more sort of
- 5:53Speaker 4: you know, every man philosophy. Really I try to get
- 5:56Speaker 4: over and I just want to encourage people or to
- 6:01Speaker 4: realize their full potential. You know, we're all amazing human
- 6:04Speaker 4: beings and we can bring the you know, let's bring
- 6:09Speaker 4: it out because everyone's got something to offer.
- 6:11Speaker 5: Well, was there, recall when you when you were getting started,
- 6:15Speaker 5: A lot of the music around you was the opposite
- 6:18Speaker 5: kind of dark, dark and depressing, and you were the
- 6:20Speaker 5: lone voice of you know, positivity, He comes happy.
- 6:26Speaker 1: Yes, that's what I remember.
- 6:27Speaker 4: Well, I mean it's not that I'm a stranger to
- 6:30Speaker 4: you know, darkness and cynicism. You know, I think, you know,
- 6:34Speaker 4: I think that exists in all of us. But it's like,
- 6:38Speaker 4: how do you win the battle against that? I mean,
- 6:40Speaker 4: I've got no. I mean, I think it's important to
- 6:43Speaker 4: have the kind of music you just talked about as well,
- 6:46Speaker 4: because people can relate to going through those feelings. It's
- 6:50Speaker 4: just my my thing was about being a cheerleader, you know,
- 6:55Speaker 4: and raising people's spirits and stuff.
- 6:57Speaker 2: That's what. Well, thank you for doing well.
- 7:00Speaker 1: Yes, uh, now I'm going to ask you a question.
- 7:03Speaker 1: I got this old shirt.
- 7:05Speaker 3: Now, I had this picture too, and I think it
- 7:08Speaker 3: was taken the same day in the same place. And
- 7:12Speaker 3: I have no idea who this person is.
- 7:14Speaker 6: Do you.
- 7:16Speaker 1: Did she look familiar? I can't. Oh, I can't.
- 7:23Speaker 2: No, I don't know that post.
- 7:24Speaker 1: I can't figure out who it is.
- 7:26Speaker 5: It was some were you doing a series of interviews?
- 7:30Speaker 7: Yeah, how one of.
- 7:32Speaker 3: Them, and they would I think this is one of
- 7:33Speaker 3: the first times we met you. You came to our
- 7:35Speaker 3: hotel room in London. They would line us, line us
- 7:39Speaker 3: up with a bunch of people.
- 7:40Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 7:40Speaker 4: Well, you know, thanks for all that support you gave me,
- 7:44Speaker 4: because you know.
- 7:45Speaker 3: And you were always really reciprocal and great about it too.
- 7:50Speaker 1: People.
- 7:50Speaker 3: When I tell people that Howard Jones played in the backyard,
- 7:54Speaker 3: of a woman's home in Bountiful in the summer.
- 7:57Speaker 8: Yes, and they go he did what he came and
- 8:02Speaker 8: played in the backyards. And it was wonderful that they
- 8:05Speaker 8: had a barbecue, didn't They had the chuck Wagon breakfast
- 8:09Speaker 8: we called it.
- 8:10Speaker 5: Even even more hard to believe is the fact that
- 8:12Speaker 5: he invited two strangers to his house and picked us
- 8:15Speaker 5: up at the train station.
- 8:19Speaker 1: It was that lovely. Are you still live in the
- 8:22Speaker 1: same same place?
- 8:23Speaker 4: No, No, We we moved down to the southwest of
- 8:28Speaker 4: the UK and so we lived between Exeter and Bristol.
- 8:33Speaker 1: I love that house.
- 8:36Speaker 2: It was cool, that studio there and everything.
- 8:38Speaker 4: But one of our one of our kids, it was
- 8:42Speaker 4: spectacularly dyslexic. So we needed to find the school that
- 8:46Speaker 4: could really help them to, you know, learn to.
- 8:50Speaker 1: Read and stuff.
- 8:51Speaker 4: And that really worked and he got like a university
- 8:54Speaker 4: degree and now he's just got like wonderful.
- 8:58Speaker 1: It's amazing, isn't it.
- 8:59Speaker 4: Yeah, So it was really really worth us thing, and
- 9:01Speaker 4: we love it down there. It's very beautiful and I've
- 9:05Speaker 4: got my studios that I can really get on with
- 9:07Speaker 4: the work.
- 9:08Speaker 9: You know.
- 9:09Speaker 3: If you have any questions for Howard Jones, he's in
- 9:12Speaker 3: studio live with us right now, So we're going to
- 9:14Speaker 3: play his new song called stand Up.
- 9:18Speaker 1: Is that right?
- 9:18Speaker 2: It is? Yeah, he's in town for the show that's tomorrow,
- 9:22Speaker 2: but I think you can still get tickets too. It's
- 9:24Speaker 2: at the Mayverick Center.
- 9:26Speaker 3: And along with English Beat Wang Chung Modern English, Modern
- 9:31Speaker 3: English and and who do you open the show?
- 9:34Speaker 1: Or or do you rotate? Or what are you?
- 9:36Speaker 7: No?
- 9:37Speaker 2: It's I end the evening, the evening.
- 9:41Speaker 1: Things can only get better, that's right.
- 9:44Speaker 3: And I was just reminding Howard when he was at
- 9:47Speaker 3: our studio, right we had barely started this radio station,
- 9:50Speaker 3: I think, and we we had a little crappy I
- 9:53Speaker 3: almost said the other.
- 9:54Speaker 1: Words studio down in Provo.
- 9:58Speaker 3: And Howard came to that studio and we talked to
- 10:01Speaker 3: him on the air, and then he asked me, do
- 10:03Speaker 3: you know where I can get any wheat grass juice?
- 10:06Speaker 1: And I said, what A long time ago? It might
- 10:10Speaker 1: be a hard thing to get improvos that. Yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 10:14Speaker 1: I said, well, I don't know what that is. Will
- 10:17Speaker 1: you drink it?
- 10:19Speaker 2: That's what you're thinking is very It's like a real
- 10:22Speaker 2: health boost thing.
- 10:23Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 10:23Speaker 2: I don't think I've ever had it. Since it's really disgusting.
- 10:30Speaker 1: I've since tried it and it's really disgusting. I don't
- 10:33Speaker 1: know why people drink it.
- 10:35Speaker 5: But you went from being vegetarian to being full vegan.
- 10:38Speaker 2: Yeah, and then and now I'm I'm back to being
- 10:41Speaker 2: a vegetarian. Yeah.
- 10:42Speaker 4: It's it's a bit difficult on the road to be
- 10:46Speaker 4: strictly vegan, but I mean probably ninety percent I am vegan.
- 10:51Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 10:51Speaker 4: But you know, it's like I always think, you know,
- 10:54Speaker 4: do it, you can if you care about those things.
- 10:56Speaker 4: It's like it doesn't matter, you know, you know, you're
- 10:58Speaker 4: like if you you've done it, you know what you
- 11:01Speaker 4: eat each day. It's important to stay healthy.
- 11:06Speaker 5: Eight seven seven six two nine six ninety six is
- 11:09Speaker 5: the number to call. Dave is on the line.
- 11:11Speaker 1: Hi, Hi, Dave. Do you have a question for Howard?
- 11:15Speaker 9: Yeah, Howard, big fans in all your contents, including winning
- 11:18Speaker 9: tickets from these guys.
- 11:20Speaker 10: To see you back in New York.
- 11:21Speaker 2: Great.
- 11:22Speaker 6: Are you still doing work, doing any work with Jane.
- 11:24Speaker 1: Wild in for the or Goos?
- 11:26Speaker 2: Sorry? All right, okay, now that's a really good no.
- 11:29Speaker 8: No.
- 11:29Speaker 2: That was a kind of one off thing.
- 11:31Speaker 4: We we we went to a castle in France to
- 11:34Speaker 4: write songs together and and we wrote a song called
- 11:39Speaker 4: what was it called Tomorrow is Now and uh, And
- 11:44Speaker 4: you know, I had a really great time because you know,
- 11:48Speaker 4: Jane really understood where I was coming from, and she
- 11:52Speaker 4: was really most responsible for those lyrics.
- 11:55Speaker 2: And it was great. That was a real highlight of
- 11:57Speaker 2: the week.
- 11:58Speaker 4: You know, you had to write a song every day
- 12:00Speaker 4: and then record it in the afternoon, and you know,
- 12:03Speaker 4: we were put together in groups of people and that
- 12:05Speaker 4: was a that was a wonderful thing.
- 12:07Speaker 2: Dave.
- 12:08Speaker 1: Thanks Dave. Yeah, there you go.
- 12:12Speaker 5: You've been working with quite a few people though. It's
- 12:14Speaker 5: take a look here into the list. You you toured
- 12:16Speaker 5: with Ringo Star.
- 12:19Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, that was amazing. Yeah, six weeks we did.
- 12:23Speaker 2: It was back.
- 12:24Speaker 4: It's quite a long time ago now, but you know,
- 12:27Speaker 4: if Ringo phones you up says can you join the band.
- 12:34Speaker 2: I'll see if I have time, it's it's Ringo again.
- 12:42Speaker 2: So yeah, so that was that was great.
- 12:43Speaker 4: It was like Rolls Royce touring, you know, private jets,
- 12:48Speaker 4: four seasons, police escorts. Yeah, that's right, that's right, that's right.
- 12:55Speaker 4: So I thought I'll never be experiencing that.
- 13:00Speaker 1: Excuse me. Eight seven seven six two nine six let's
- 13:03Speaker 1: go to Jason. Hi, Jason, Hey guys, good morning, Hey Jason.
- 13:10Speaker 1: What's your question Howard?
- 13:12Speaker 7: Well, not really a question, it's more of just a
- 13:14Speaker 7: thank you. You know, Howard was the music of my youth,
- 13:18Speaker 7: and I feel like I always, you know, you're always
- 13:20Speaker 7: going back to the music when you were young, and
- 13:22Speaker 7: it just I can honestly say it changed. It changed
- 13:26Speaker 7: my direction. It changed my life, like you guys said,
- 13:28Speaker 7: very positive and I just love it. Every time I
- 13:31Speaker 7: hear his music, it takes me back to the good
- 13:33Speaker 7: old days.
- 13:33Speaker 1: It's great.
- 13:34Speaker 4: Oh well, thank you very much for saying that. That's
- 13:36Speaker 4: really really kind of you. That's what you know, Well,
- 13:40Speaker 4: every artist would like to hear that. You know that
- 13:42Speaker 4: it made a difference.
- 13:43Speaker 3: Yeah, things can only get better whenever that song comes on.
- 13:48Speaker 3: And I even, you know, and I'm not the most
- 13:50Speaker 3: positive person in the world, but when I hear that song,
- 13:55Speaker 3: I just have to stop.
- 13:56Speaker 10: We need it today more than ever.
- 13:58Speaker 1: Really, it's it's still resonants.
- 14:02Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, I mean it's interesting because as time has
- 14:05Speaker 4: gone by, you know, when when I play it in
- 14:08Speaker 4: the audience, you can tell, you know, and I say
- 14:11Speaker 4: and do you feel scared?
- 14:12Speaker 2: And people go.
- 14:14Speaker 4: Yeah, and it does resonate, but I won't stop at Falter.
- 14:18Speaker 4: So I'm not going to let it, you know, destroy
- 14:20Speaker 4: me or bring me down. I'm gonna just it's going
- 14:23Speaker 4: to give me more energy to go forward. You know.
- 14:27Speaker 2: Do you do you have thanks for thanks Jason?
- 14:31Speaker 1: There's one more coming in here in a second. Do
- 14:33Speaker 1: you do you have a favorite song of your own,
- 14:36Speaker 1: one that you just are everything you love to do?
- 14:39Speaker 4: And you know, I love I love playing No One
- 14:43Speaker 4: Is to Blame because because it's I don't know it's
- 14:50Speaker 4: it's because it's got it's quite complex. Mostly my songs
- 14:54Speaker 4: pretty straightforward, you know what it's saying, whereas No One
- 14:57Speaker 4: Is to Blame is a little bit more open to interpretation.
- 15:01Speaker 4: And I'm constantly finding new thing ways to you know,
- 15:04Speaker 4: interpret it. And I played the show at the Greek
- 15:08Speaker 4: Theater just a few days ago, and I played that
- 15:11Speaker 4: something like thousands of times, but suddenly something about that
- 15:14Speaker 4: night and I got goosebumps again, you know, And I think.
- 15:17Speaker 2: That's how nice time still feel that I know, I know.
- 15:22Speaker 4: It was, And I think because it's so much to
- 15:24Speaker 4: do with what the audiences giving you back and the
- 15:27Speaker 4: and the feeling in the room, you know. So, yeah,
- 15:31Speaker 4: that's that's my latest favorite. And I think it's interesting that.
- 15:34Speaker 3: You know, I used to be an actor and I
- 15:36Speaker 3: would so I one one play, I did a hundred
- 15:40Speaker 3: performances of it or something like that.
- 15:42Speaker 1: And you have to try and find something new or
- 15:45Speaker 1: you'll just you'll just go crazy, right, So you can
- 15:48Speaker 1: find something new in your songs every once in a while.
- 15:55Speaker 10: Hey, guys, how you doing.
- 15:57Speaker 1: What's your question or time?
- 15:59Speaker 10: I just had a quick question. Well, first of all,
- 16:01Speaker 10: been going to Howard Jones since the eighties with my wife,
- 16:04Speaker 10: and we just adore you. Thank and in fact, you're
- 16:08Speaker 10: kind enough to come out and say hi to us
- 16:09Speaker 10: at Redbute a couple of years ago, and that was
- 16:12Speaker 10: really nice to see you. But we went and saw
- 16:14Speaker 10: Thomas Delby on Sunday, and I was curious if you'd
- 16:18Speaker 10: ever thought about touring together.
- 16:20Speaker 2: Yeah, I think I think that will happen at one time.
- 16:23Speaker 4: It'd be great now Tom, Tom's a friend, and you know,
- 16:27Speaker 4: we we had this great experience in nineteen eighty five
- 16:31Speaker 4: at the Grammys where we you know, we did we
- 16:35Speaker 4: did a tribute to Two Keyboards with Herbie Hancock and
- 16:39Speaker 4: Stevie wonder and me and Tom I remember, yeah, and
- 16:43Speaker 4: it was a it was a it was a real
- 16:44Speaker 4: I mean, that's the sort of bonding thing that we
- 16:46Speaker 4: we'll never forget.
- 16:47Speaker 2: I mean.
- 16:47Speaker 4: And also, you know, Tom and I were kind of
- 16:50Speaker 4: pioneers of of using the new technology the drum machines
- 16:55Speaker 4: and the sequences and stuff, so we'll always be bonded
- 16:58Speaker 4: through that. So yeah, I would love to have Tom
- 17:02Speaker 4: tour with us.
- 17:02Speaker 2: Be great. I just found that video.
- 17:04Speaker 4: I'm going to post it because I think people do
- 17:06Speaker 4: want to see Howard Grammy Grammys.
- 17:09Speaker 1: Okay, all right, thanks Tony, amazing.
- 17:12Speaker 5: All right, let's go to Lisa real quick here, Lisa, Hi, Hi,
- 17:18Speaker 5: what ahead?
- 17:20Speaker 4: Hi?
