- 0:01Some of the heaviest things you will carry will have nothing to
- 0:04do with your work. There's a story behind that.
- 0:08This is your daily message from Chad.
- 0:10More 12129 to upgrade your mental game today by telling
- 0:13yourself a better story. Because the most important story
- 0:15you hear is the story you tell yourself.
- 0:17This message is dedicated to Jamie Lynn Austell Smith.
- 0:20Here's the upgrade. You may think a great goal.
- 0:24Ask only for your hours and your effort.
- 0:26Upgraded thinking knows you may also have to carry grief that
- 0:30has nothing to do with the goal at all.
- 0:32Here's the story. Isadora Sharp built Four Seasons
- 0:36with limited capital and no hotel operating experience.
- 0:40He had construction experience and outside backing, but not
- 0:43much else. When he set out to build his
- 0:46second hotel, a resort called in on the park, his earnings barely
- 0:50covered his growing family's expenses.
- 0:53He went ahead anyway, but the hardest thing he carried had
- 0:56nothing to do with the financing of a hotel.
- 0:59His son Chris was diagnosed with Melanoma as 17.
- 1:03He died on March 10th, 1978. Chris was the only one of the
- 1:08Sharp boys who wanted to join the family's business.
- 1:11Sharp and his wife Rosalie made a decision about their other
- 1:14children. In Sharp's words, Quote.
- 1:17We decided to bear our burden but not put that burden on our
- 1:19other children. In quote, he added, You never
- 1:24forget. To this day I say a morning
- 1:26prayer for my son. The business did not stop and
- 1:30the business was not the source of the grief.
- 1:33Years later, during an economic downturn of 1981, his finance
- 1:37executive urged him to sell the company.
- 1:40Sharp instead pledged all of his four season stock, knowing he
- 1:44could lose everything. He was not building a safe life,
- 1:48he was building a standard of excellence that The Four Seasons
- 1:51was known for, and he kept building it while he carried the
- 1:54loss. You will face losses you did not
- 1:58schedule and did not 'cause you'll face weeks when the
- 2:02numbers look fine and your heart does not.
- 2:05The discipline is not pretending the weight isn't there.
- 2:08The discipline is deciding which people still need you and then
- 2:11taking the next honest step for them.
- 2:15So the next time something heavy lands, don't ask how to make it
- 2:18disappear before you're allowed to work.
- 2:20Ask who still depends on you and the do one thing for them.
- 2:24Today, there are all sorts of pain that must be endured in
- 2:29business. Sometimes the worst pain isn't
- 2:32coming from the business, but must be carried along with the
- 2:35business. The better story to tell
- 2:38yourself is it's not the weight, it's the way I carry it.
- 2:42Sharp said. Excellence is the capacity to
- 2:45take. Pain is a door.
- 2:47Sharp kept building Despite that pain, and every morning he still
- 2:51said the prayer. Tell me a story of carrying
- 2:54something heavy to from chadsmith@gmail.com.
- 2:57Send someone a text and ask them what is one thing you kept
- 3:00building through a hard season. You get a free copy of my book,
