- 0:00Speaker 1: A radio disc jockey, turns stunt night into a ghost hunt,
- 0:04Speaker 1: carrying a wire recorder into an isolated house above the
- 0:07Speaker 1: Pacific near Malibu, a property marked by four apparent suicides.
- 0:13Speaker 1: That is the assignment facing Smiley Smith, played by Ralph Edwards,
- 0:18Speaker 1: with Joseph Kerns as doctor Clarence Reid, an investigator of
- 0:23Speaker 1: psychic phenomena. In Suspense episode three, first heard June second,
- 0:28Speaker 1: nineteen forty nine, Charles MacDonald, the real estate agent, hopes
- 0:34Speaker 1: the Knight's experiment will clear the house's reputation. Smiley intends
- 0:38Speaker 1: to put the whole affair on record. From an original
- 0:42Speaker 1: story by H. R. Wakefield, adapted for radio by Walter
- 0:46Speaker 1: Newman and directed by Anton M. Leader, here is ghost Hunt,
- 0:52Speaker 1: and now our story begins.
- 1:04Speaker 2: Now Auto Light and It's sixty thousand dealers and service
- 1:07Speaker 2: stations present Suspense Night.
- 1:17Speaker 3: Auto Light brings you, Mister Ralph Edwards in Ghost Tons,
- 1:22Speaker 3: a suspense play produced and directed by Antonym Leader.
- 1:31Speaker 2: Friends, replace worn out narrow gap spark plugs with a
- 1:35Speaker 2: set of those new wide gap auto light resistor spark plugs.
- 1:39Speaker 2: Your motor will idle smoother, give better performance on leaner
- 1:42Speaker 2: gas mixtures. Actually save gas. These winning benefits are all
- 1:46Speaker 2: made possible by a newly developed auto Light ten thousand
- 1:49Speaker 2: dome resistor built right into every auto light resistor spark plug,
- 1:53Speaker 2: making practical a whiter spark gap setting. And that's what
- 1:57Speaker 2: does the trick. Whatt's more. Auto light resist spark plugs
- 2:00Speaker 2: with this exclusive Autolight resistor have greatly increased electrode life
- 2:05Speaker 2: and cut down on radio and television interference. So folks,
- 2:08Speaker 2: see your Autolite dealer and have him replace old, worn
- 2:11Speaker 2: out narrow gap spark plugs with a set of the
- 2:14Speaker 2: new Autolite resistor spark plugs. Remember you're always right with Autolite.
- 2:20Speaker 2: And also remember the Auto Light Suspense Show is now
- 2:23Speaker 2: on television every Tuesday night in many parts of the country.
- 2:27Speaker 3: And now auto Light presents Ralph Edwards in a tale
- 2:32Speaker 3: well calculated to keep you in suspense.
- 2:49Speaker 4: Yeah, didn't that leave you high?
- 2:50Speaker 3: Huh?
- 2:51Speaker 4: Left me feel in treetop tall? That was Louis Armstrong's
- 2:54Speaker 4: I Can't give you anything but love, and that's all
- 2:56Speaker 4: we have time for. On the Hot and Mellow Hour tonight. Yes, yes, yes,
- 3:03Speaker 4: this is Smiley Smith, your favorite disc jockey. I hope
- 3:05Speaker 4: I hope booting the hot and.
- 3:06Speaker 5: Mellow hour home for this evening.
- 3:08Speaker 4: I'll be back again tomorrow night, minus the music, but
- 3:10Speaker 4: with a little surprise for you. Tomorrow night, Friday night,
- 3:13Speaker 4: as you know, is stunt night here at Station w XP.
- 3:17Speaker 4: And have I got a stunt for you? Last week?
- 3:19Speaker 4: If you remember, I planted my wire recorder in the
- 3:21Speaker 4: steam room at a lady's Turkish bath and let you
- 3:24Speaker 4: listen in on the playback.
- 3:25Speaker 6: Member.
- 3:27Speaker 4: Well, tonight, as soon as I leave the studio, do
- 3:29Speaker 4: you know where I'm going? Your friend Smiley is going
- 3:32Speaker 4: to spend the night in a haunted house on a spoolcunt.
- 3:35Speaker 4: You heard me, a spook hunt in a haunted house.
- 3:39Speaker 4: I'm bringing a little old wire recorder along with me.
- 3:41Speaker 4: And if you tune in tomorrow evening, if there's time,
- 3:43Speaker 4: you'll learn what it's like to spend a night in
- 3:45Speaker 4: a haunted house. Ain't that something? A real haunted house?
- 3:49Speaker 4: No kid, Four people are known.
- 3:51Speaker 5: To have committed suicide there.
- 3:52Speaker 4: So tune in tomorrow night and share a real thrill
- 3:55Speaker 4: with your old pal Smiley. I must be crazy Smith.
- 3:58Speaker 4: Good night.
- 4:14Speaker 7: Care for cigar mister Thorp.
- 4:15Speaker 8: I got some cigars in the dash there no well,
- 4:18Speaker 8: no reason for you to carry a chip on your shoulder.
- 4:21Speaker 7: Mister Thorpe, Really well, I don't like this fool stunt. Well,
- 4:25Speaker 7: I don't see it as a fool stunt at all.
- 4:26Speaker 8: I really don't. I think it's the only way you're
- 4:29Speaker 8: gonna unload this house. Ordinary selling methodis won't work in
- 4:32Speaker 8: a case like this. I don't forget the reputation saddling
- 4:35Speaker 8: this house for suicides since nineteen thirty nine.
- 4:38Speaker 7: You know what, people call it, the death trap.
- 4:41Speaker 8: Yes, it's a lot of nonsense, sure, but try to
- 4:44Speaker 8: convince people of that anyway. When this disc jockey offered
- 4:47Speaker 8: me this chance to kill all the rumors about the
- 4:49Speaker 8: death or about the property, I just naturally jumped and
- 4:52Speaker 8: took him up at it, especially since it don't cost
- 4:55Speaker 8: a sin.
- 4:56Speaker 7: You sure about that. I'm not liable for a penny.
- 4:59Speaker 8: Not a cent. We're doing him a favor letting him
- 5:01Speaker 8: use the place. He said, thank me for the chance
- 5:03Speaker 8: last night when I drove him out here. Sold one
- 5:06Speaker 8: end watches the other As the feller says he got
- 5:08Speaker 8: a chance to pull off a stunt. The wire recording
- 5:11Speaker 8: will prove the people the properties ain't number one, and
- 5:13Speaker 8: we increase the chance of selling the place.
- 5:16Speaker 7: Well, as long as it doesn't cost me anything, not
- 5:18Speaker 7: a thing. He's using his.
- 5:19Speaker 8: Own recorder, and I'm paying for the riddle of a
- 5:21Speaker 8: couple of walkie talkies he hooked up to it.
- 5:23Speaker 7: Well, what about this read? Does he charged anything? He
- 5:27Speaker 7: comes gratis too, Doctor Reed is what you might call it.
- 5:31Speaker 8: Psychic investigator belongs to a couple of societies that do
- 5:35Speaker 8: nothing but hunt goes.
- 5:37Speaker 7: He showed me articles he's written about it in the magazine.
- 5:42Speaker 7: Well here's a house. Yeah, looks real nice and the
- 5:46Speaker 7: sunshine on it. Yeah, man, smell that sea breeze. They
- 5:50Speaker 7: don't have to sell me. Well let him know where here?
- 5:57Speaker 7: Probably asleep up all night and everything. Why don't they
- 6:03Speaker 7: come out? You think they've gone? I told him last
- 6:06Speaker 7: night I'd take them up around eleven?
- 6:08Speaker 8: Uh Smith, Smith, Hey smiley, Doctor ree.
- 6:18Speaker 2: Yeah, fast asleep.
- 6:19Speaker 7: I guess we better go and wake them up. Yah.
- 6:29Speaker 7: Of course they may have taken the bus back to town.
- 6:32Speaker 8: Oh no, no, it's a two mile hikes the main highway.
- 6:46Speaker 7: A Smith, Hey Smiley, where are you wake up? You
- 6:55Speaker 7: don't suppose do you?
- 6:58Speaker 8: Oh no, no, Smith, Doctor Reid.
- 7:04Speaker 7: What's that that clicking noise from in? There's his wire recorder?
- 7:11Speaker 8: He left it running. These machines cost a lot of money.
- 7:14Speaker 8: Doesn't he care if he use up his batteries?
- 7:16Speaker 7: Oh? Where is he? And where's this read? And maybe
- 7:19Speaker 7: they're upstairs?
- 7:20Speaker 2: H Smith?
- 7:22Speaker 7: Hey? Anybody home? They must have walked to the highway
- 7:29Speaker 7: and taken the bus. He wouldn't have left his machine.
- 7:31Speaker 7: Well where are they? Then? Where are they? Don't get excited,
- 7:34Speaker 7: mister Thorpe.
- 7:35Speaker 9: Don't tell me not to get excited if something's happened
- 7:39Speaker 9: to them in my house.
- 7:40Speaker 7: I'm liable. Will you try this side? I'll try that
- 7:43Speaker 7: all right?
- 7:45Speaker 2: Smith?
- 7:46Speaker 7: Hey, smiley Smith Smith? Oh? O'donald come here? What?
- 7:54Speaker 4: What?
- 7:57Speaker 8: Oh? No? Real doctor?
- 8:01Speaker 6: Ree?
- 8:02Speaker 8: No, no, don't touch you, mister Thorpe. You'll get your
- 8:04Speaker 8: hands off.
- 8:05Speaker 7: Look blood? Is he dead?
- 8:10Speaker 8: I can still feel his pups. We better get him
- 8:12Speaker 8: to the hospital fast. Uh care for cigar? Mister Thorpe, No,
- 8:37Speaker 8: no things? Why not try to relax? The nurse said
- 8:39Speaker 8: Read to be all right as soon as he's had
- 8:41Speaker 8: a blood transfusion.
- 8:42Speaker 9: Who told the radio station to be sure and call
- 8:43Speaker 9: us as soon as they had me worried about.
- 8:45Speaker 7: Smith, as I told him, Why don't you sit down? No,
- 8:48Speaker 7: I am all at sixes and sevens. What do you
- 8:50Speaker 7: suppose happened out there last night?
- 8:52Speaker 8: We're gonna know him just a second, just as soon
- 8:54Speaker 8: as I can get this this quarter set up.
- 8:57Speaker 7: You don't suppose Smith and Reid got into a fight?
- 9:00Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 9:00Speaker 7: There, huh fight? I don't know, Well, what's wrong? Won't
- 9:07Speaker 7: it work?
- 9:07Speaker 6: It works?
- 9:08Speaker 7: Think it easy?
- 9:09Speaker 4: Testing one two three, Testing one two three, I'll said,
- 9:15Speaker 4: doctor Reid. This McDonald, Hey, okay, here we go. This
- 9:21Speaker 4: is Smiley Smith speaking Smiley Smith, the ghost Hunter. I
- 9:24Speaker 4: don't know whether to hope this will turn out to
- 9:26Speaker 4: be a success for the sake of the program or
- 9:27Speaker 4: a failure for my own sake. Anyway, all the preparations
- 9:30Speaker 4: have been made now.
- 9:31Speaker 5: And it's up to the spooks. I better tell you
- 9:34Speaker 5: where we are right now.
- 9:35Speaker 4: We're standing on the lawn of a house about twelve
- 9:37Speaker 4: miles above Malibu Beach. The ocean is one hundred feet
- 9:40Speaker 4: away straight down. The house is perched on a cliff,
- 9:43Speaker 4: and there's a sheer drop of about one hundred feet right.
- 9:46Speaker 5: Into the Old Pacific. Maybe you can hear the surf
- 9:48Speaker 5: pounding I'll turn up the volume.
- 9:52Speaker 7: Hear it.
- 9:53Speaker 4: Now, I'm going to have you meet.
- 9:55Speaker 5: Two gentlemen who are here with me.
- 9:56Speaker 4: Incidentally, we're the only people around for Miles and Miles. First,
- 9:59Speaker 4: I'd like you to meet Clarence Reid of the British
- 10:01Speaker 4: and American.
- 10:02Speaker 5: Psychical Research Guilts.
- 10:04Speaker 4: Doctor Reed is a famous investigator of psychic phenomena, and
- 10:08Speaker 4: I'm very honored to be associated with him on this
- 10:10Speaker 4: ghost hunt. He's smiling in an embarrassed sort of way.
- 10:13Speaker 7: About two Kui and me.
- 10:15Speaker 4: Doctor Reed has conducted experiments in this field with such
- 10:17Speaker 4: great believers in spiritualism as Oliver Lodge and Arthur Conan Doyle.
- 10:21Speaker 4: He looks a bit like Santa Claus. He's short, stocky.
- 10:24Speaker 4: You don't object to doctor Reed, No, no, you need it,
- 10:28Speaker 4: and he has a magnificent white beard, a truly great beaver.
- 10:32Speaker 4: Doctor Reed is so enthusiastic about ghost hunting that he
- 10:35Speaker 4: got out of a sick bed this evening to be
- 10:36Speaker 4: with us.
- 10:38Speaker 10: Excuse me, my lungs. I was gassed in the First
- 10:43Speaker 10: World Law.
- 10:44Speaker 4: Yeah, anyway, Doctor Reid and I are here on the
- 10:46Speaker 4: lawn looking at the house.
- 10:47Speaker 5: Can't see much.
- 10:48Speaker 4: It's around eleven PM now seems to be a rambling
- 10:52Speaker 4: sort of house two stories high. Since it was built,
- 10:54Speaker 4: there have been four suicides here.
- 10:56Speaker 5: That right, that's right into the micclathe.
- 10:59Speaker 8: Yeah, four suicide since nineteen thirty nine.
- 11:02Speaker 5: I better tell him who you are so they won't
- 11:04Speaker 5: think you're a ghost.
- 11:05Speaker 4: Standing with the doc and me is a real estate agent,
- 11:07Speaker 4: mister Charles McDonald. He handles his property and he can
- 11:10Speaker 4: tell you a lot more about it than I can.
- 11:12Speaker 2: Well.
- 11:12Speaker 8: The house was built by a man named Marcus Toby. Marcus,
- 11:15Speaker 8: an orange grower, built the house as a wedding present
- 11:18Speaker 8: for his wife. Month after they moved in, she took
- 11:20Speaker 8: her own life. On the day of her funeral, he
- 11:23Speaker 8: committed suicide the same way. There have been two other
- 11:26Speaker 8: cases since then.
- 11:26Speaker 4: And now did they all jump into the ocean?
- 11:28Speaker 7: Yeah?
- 11:29Speaker 8: All four of them right over there. The last one
- 11:31Speaker 8: was actually seen doing it about three years ago. He
- 11:34Speaker 8: was seen running like all get out the edge of
- 11:36Speaker 8: the cliff, and he was shouting and laughing and yelling ats. Oh,
- 11:39Speaker 8: there was people at his side running.
- 11:40Speaker 2: Right along with him. You kidding us?
- 11:42Speaker 8: Fact, he was laughing and yelling and running, And when
- 11:44Speaker 8: he got to the edge right over there, he jumped
- 11:47Speaker 8: and never came above water.
- 11:48Speaker 4: As good an argument against cold baths as ever i've heard.
- 11:52Speaker 7: Since then, people just refused to live in this house. Silly,
- 11:55Speaker 7: I call it.
- 11:56Speaker 8: Anyway, if you and doctor Reid find any sign of
- 11:58Speaker 8: a spook, I'll advise. I wanted to pull the house
- 12:01Speaker 8: down and rebuild. But if you don't find anything, I'm
- 12:04Speaker 8: hoping this will convince folks that here's a real buye Okay,
- 12:08Speaker 8: mister Smith, you and the doctor on your own. I'll
- 12:10Speaker 8: be buy in the morning to pick you up around eleven.
- 12:13Speaker 4: Good Bye, miss McDonald. I hope there's something left for
- 12:15Speaker 4: you to pick up in the morning. Well, it's almost
- 12:19Speaker 4: pitch black, folks, And I guess doctor reed, and I
- 12:21Speaker 4: ought to begin. I don't believe in ghosts, never have,
- 12:24Speaker 4: but what I say is this, if you're dead set
- 12:26Speaker 4: on looking for them, this is a dandy place to
- 12:29Speaker 4: do it. So long, mister McDonald just checked out. Then
- 12:35Speaker 4: there were two, well three, Oh my dog, Yeah, folks,
- 12:40Speaker 4: I have my dog Jeff with me. He's a wire
- 12:42Speaker 4: haired terrier three years of age, and he can talk. Yeah,
- 12:44Speaker 4: say hello, Jeff, Come on, Jeff, say hello. Well, anyway,
- 12:48Speaker 4: he's a wire haired terrier and he's three years old.
- 12:51Speaker 4: Shall we go inside now, doctor Reid.
- 12:52Speaker 10: I was about to suggest you, now, how.
- 12:55Speaker 4: Do we hunt ghosts?
- 12:56Speaker 6: Doctor?
- 12:56Speaker 5: How do we do it?
- 12:57Speaker 2: Huh?
- 12:57Speaker 10: Well, we don't really hunt. If there should be the host,
- 13:00Speaker 10: they will come to us our cozy and please not ghosts.
- 13:04Speaker 10: Do not refer to them as ghosts. We know them
- 13:07Speaker 10: as appetition.
- 13:08Speaker 4: I'll remember. I've no desire to hurt their feelings. Where
- 13:11Speaker 4: ghosts are concerned, I say live and let live. Well,
- 13:20Speaker 4: you've opened the front door. Now maybe you heard the
- 13:22Speaker 4: hinge squeak a little. Now we're standing here looking in.
- 13:25Speaker 4: Can't see much, smell sort of musty and damp. It's
- 13:30Speaker 4: matter of Jeff. It's a mat of boy.
- 13:32Speaker 6: Jeff.
- 13:32Speaker 7: Oh, come on now, come on.
- 13:34Speaker 4: My dog seems to object entering this house. He has
- 13:36Speaker 4: all four feet braced and these straining against the leash.
- 13:39Speaker 2: Perhaps he senses something.
- 13:40Speaker 5: We don't like, apparitions, maybe preps.
- 13:43Speaker 10: It's not unusual. Animals lack the veneer of sophistication we
- 13:47Speaker 10: humans possess, and more sensitive to such an initial Yeah.
- 13:51Speaker 5: Come on, Jeff, now, stop this nonsense.
- 13:53Speaker 4: He probably smells a mouse or rat or something. Come on, Jack,
- 13:55Speaker 4: We're going in whether you like it or not. There's
- 14:00Speaker 4: a short entrance hall, and over there at the end
- 14:02Speaker 4: of it is a flight of stairs leading to the
- 14:03Speaker 4: second floor.
- 14:04Speaker 2: Yeh.
- 14:05Speaker 4: And over here at the left is what seems to
- 14:08Speaker 4: be a large reception room.
- 14:10Speaker 5: We're entering this large room.
- 14:11Speaker 4: Now there are windows over there, French windows, and through
- 14:15Speaker 4: them I can see the ocean. The electricity hasn't been
- 14:18Speaker 4: turned on, so all I have to see buy is
- 14:20Speaker 4: a flashlight, not a very powerful one. At that Doctor
- 14:23Speaker 4: Reed is now adjusting his walkie talking. It's hooked up
- 14:26Speaker 4: to my recorder so that he can cut in while
- 14:27Speaker 4: he's hunting and tell us what he's found. Here's a
- 14:30Speaker 4: few words from Doc before he sets forth on his
- 14:32Speaker 4: investigation through the house.
- 14:33Speaker 10: Ladies and gentlemen, mister Smith has introduced me as a
- 14:39Speaker 10: ghost hunter. He spoke, I think in a spirit of
- 14:42Speaker 10: skepticism and levity. I'd like to assure you all that
- 14:46Speaker 10: my purposes here are serious. I have spent my entire
- 14:49Speaker 10: life seeking reliable proof of the appearances of apparitions?
- 14:53Speaker 5: Have you ever seen any ever?
- 14:55Speaker 10: I have seen phenomena which lead me to believe in
- 14:57Speaker 10: the possibility of their existence. Although I have no seedy,
- 15:01Speaker 10: I count myself sensitive to the evidence of their existence.
- 15:04Speaker 10: This house, for example, affects me profoundly. It doesn't seem
- 15:08Speaker 10: to affect you in the same way.
- 15:10Speaker 5: I'm not too happy about all this. If that's what
- 15:11Speaker 5: you mean, you.
- 15:12Speaker 10: Are not psychic and therefore not sensitive to these metters
- 15:15Speaker 10: as I am. I imagine the question in the minds
- 15:18Speaker 10: of those of you listening to us is shall we
- 15:22Speaker 10: find apparitions?
- 15:23Speaker 7: I don't know.
- 15:25Speaker 10: I feel they are here and that they are evil.
- 15:28Speaker 10: I sense danger. I shall soon know.
- 15:33Speaker 4: Doctor Reid's leaving the room now to make a tour
- 15:35Speaker 4: of the house. First thing I'm going to do is
- 15:37Speaker 4: open the windows and let some fresh air in.
- 15:42Speaker 5: It feels better already cooler anyway.
- 15:45Speaker 7: I know that.
- 15:48Speaker 4: A bat just blu flew into the room. I think
- 15:50Speaker 4: it's a bat, not a bird. I didn't actually see it,
- 15:52Speaker 4: just it's its shadow as it fanned my face. There
- 15:55Speaker 4: it is again.
- 15:55Speaker 5: It touched me as it passed.
- 15:59Speaker 1: Here.
- 16:00Speaker 4: Jeff, you fool dog, come back here, Doctor Reid, Doctor Reid, doctor.
- 16:07Speaker 6: Read for suspense. Auto light is bringing you.
- 16:22Speaker 3: Mister Ralph Edwards in Radio's outstanding theater of thrills suspense.
- 16:37Speaker 10: Hello, Hello, Snap under the.
- 16:39Speaker 2: H oh oh. I'm reading a letter about the new
- 16:42Speaker 2: white gap auto light resistor spark plugs. Apple. It's from
- 16:45Speaker 2: missus Clark Perry right here in Hollywood. She says, our
- 16:48Speaker 2: nineteen forty eighth station wagon has given constant trouble. Finally,
- 16:52Speaker 2: the garage man said all the difficulty was spark plugs,
- 16:55Speaker 2: and he installed a set of auto light resistor spark plugs.
- 16:57Speaker 2: Now the car runs beautifully the very first time. My
- 17:01Speaker 2: husband has been really pleased.
- 17:03Speaker 5: Smart garage man.
- 17:04Speaker 2: Smart people to take his advice.
- 17:06Speaker 7: Half.
- 17:07Speaker 2: You know, as more and more people learn about white
- 17:09Speaker 2: gap auto light resistor spark plugs, how they make an
- 17:12Speaker 2: engine idle smoother, give better performance on leaner gas mixtures,
- 17:16Speaker 2: actually save on gas. Why then more people will replace old,
- 17:20Speaker 2: worn out narrow gap spark plugs with sensational new white
- 17:24Speaker 2: gap auto light resistor spark plugs. Any more letters like that?
- 17:27Speaker 2: Hull plenty, half plenty. Why here's another one from New
- 17:31Speaker 2: York City.
- 17:32Speaker 5: Read it to me, Lada, hullo.
- 17:33Speaker 7: We haven't time because here's suspense, and now.
- 17:38Speaker 3: Auto light brings back to our Hollywood soundstage. Ralph Edwards
- 17:43Speaker 3: as Smiley Smith in Ghost Hunt, A tale well calculated
- 17:49Speaker 3: to keep you in suspense.
- 17:58Speaker 4: Jeff, come back here, Jeff, you old dog, Come back here.
- 18:01Speaker 4: Doctor Reid, Doctor Reid, Doctor Reid read speaking.
- 18:07Speaker 7: What is it Smith?
- 18:08Speaker 4: Jeff has run off my dog. He jumped through the
- 18:10Speaker 4: window and ran off.
- 18:11Speaker 10: Oh so I told you he said something about this house,
- 18:13Speaker 10: didn't I?
- 18:14Speaker 4: Yeah, you want to come and see if you can
- 18:15Speaker 4: determine what it was exactly. It set him off, and
- 18:18Speaker 4: soon I.
- 18:18Speaker 10: Am making my way slowly up the stairs toward the
- 18:20Speaker 10: second floor. Now I'm halfway up. I'll be done with
- 18:23Speaker 10: your wound.
- 18:24Speaker 2: Folks.
- 18:25Speaker 4: My dogs run away. You probably heard him howling. He
- 18:27Speaker 4: jumped through the window and took off.
- 18:29Speaker 5: Never did anything like that before.
- 18:31Speaker 4: Frightened by the bat, I guess, personally, alone here in
- 18:34Speaker 4: this big room, I can understand how he must have felt.
- 18:37Speaker 4: This isn't a cheerful spot by any means. I may
- 18:40Speaker 4: not be psychic, but I sure have a feeling this
- 18:42Speaker 4: house doesn't want us here.
- 18:43Speaker 10: Read again, Excuse me, I have something of great interest
- 18:47Speaker 10: to report. I'm now standing in an alcohol on the
- 18:50Speaker 10: second floor, trying to recover my breath. As I reached
- 18:53Speaker 10: the head of the stairs. I felt what I think
- 18:55Speaker 10: is a definite psychic benifestation. I felt suddenly as though
- 18:59Speaker 10: I had been punched in the solar plexus.
- 19:01Speaker 7: That's the only way I.
- 19:02Speaker 10: Can describe it. At the same time, I began to perspire.
- 19:06Speaker 10: My head is still swimming slightly here, and I have
- 19:08Speaker 10: difficulty in swallowing. My posset rate is around one hundred
- 19:11Speaker 10: and tenth in a minute. Sense of evil is very strong.
- 19:14Speaker 10: I feel very what shall I say, profoundly depressed.
- 19:20Speaker 5: Do you want me up there?
- 19:22Speaker 1: No?
- 19:22Speaker 10: I prefer to remain up here alone. The presence of
- 19:25Speaker 10: a disbeliever such as you might interfere with my investigation.
- 19:28Speaker 4: Folks, I'd like you to get a picture what it's
- 19:31Speaker 4: like here. It's very quiet, for one thing, I've never
- 19:35Speaker 4: been in such a quiet place, and it's pretty dark.
- 19:38Speaker 4: No light except my flashlight. Tell you what you go
- 19:41Speaker 4: now and douse all the lights you have on. Go ahead,
- 19:44Speaker 4: put out the lights, and that'll give you a clear
- 19:46Speaker 4: feeling of how it is here with me. Go ahead,
- 19:48Speaker 4: put out the lights.
- 19:51Speaker 5: Hey, did you hear that?
- 19:53Speaker 4: Real estate agent told me? I'd probably hear rats and
- 19:56Speaker 4: nice in the walls. I can certainly hear them now,
- 19:59Speaker 4: even I can hear him.
- 20:00Speaker 5: I think it's as though.
- 20:01Speaker 10: Doctor h speaking. I've been working my way toward the
- 20:04Speaker 10: front room, the one directly above, the one in which
- 20:06Speaker 10: mister Smith is. Now the vibrations have become stronger and
- 20:10Speaker 10: more and more pronounces I approach it. I think I
- 20:13Speaker 10: am on the verge of an important discovery.
- 20:15Speaker 4: Important discovery.
- 20:16Speaker 7: Do you get there.
- 20:18Speaker 10: Now?
- 20:18Speaker 4: I can hear doctor Reid moving about in the room above.
- 20:21Speaker 5: I don't suppose you can have a try anyway, huh.
- 20:24Speaker 7: Heari.
- 20:26Speaker 4: I hope he finishes his investigations soon, because, quite frankly,
- 20:30Speaker 4: I'd like to get out of here. I can well
- 20:31Speaker 4: imagine people becoming unhinged in this place right now, I
- 20:35Speaker 4: find myself pretty jumpy, not being very brave, am I.
- 20:39Speaker 5: It's being alone in this room.
- 20:41Speaker 4: Down here that does it? This darned old house. It's
- 20:43Speaker 4: it's a very I mean, you know, the atmosphere so
- 20:45Speaker 4: very I.
- 20:46Speaker 10: Wish only to make this hurried report before continuing with
- 20:49Speaker 10: the investigation in this room. I have carefully sounded out
- 20:53Speaker 10: all the parts in this room, and the emanations are
- 20:55Speaker 10: most strong from what appears to be a closet before
- 20:58Speaker 10: which I am now standing. As soon as I opened
- 21:00Speaker 10: the door to this closet, I would have I think
- 21:03Speaker 10: a thing of great interest to communicate. I find no
- 21:07Speaker 10: key to the lock, and so I will attempt to
- 21:08Speaker 10: remove the hinges with my pin knife, and I will
- 21:11Speaker 10: tell you what I find.
- 21:12Speaker 7: When I open it.
- 21:13Speaker 5: I'll tell you what it would cost to get meat.
- 21:14Speaker 5: Open that door in the basement at fortnite.
- 21:17Speaker 4: There's that bad again. It seems to like me the
- 21:20Speaker 4: way it each time it passes, it touches my face
- 21:23Speaker 4: or my neck with its wings. Smelly things bats. I
- 21:28Speaker 4: don't suppose they bathe very often, if at all. I
- 21:31Speaker 4: wonder I get the way you bat that. Battle be
- 21:35Speaker 4: the death of me.
- 21:37Speaker 5: It's like a jingle, isn't it.
- 21:38Speaker 2: Battle be the death of me.
- 21:39Speaker 4: The death of me, the death of me. Battle be
- 21:41Speaker 4: the death of me.
- 21:42Speaker 2: It isn't far from London. It's the way it goes.
- 21:45Speaker 4: It's come down to queue in lie like time, and
- 21:48Speaker 4: lie like time, and lie like time. Come down to
- 21:50Speaker 4: queue and lie like time.
- 21:51Speaker 2: It isn't far.
- 21:53Speaker 4: I haven't thought of that since I was a kid
- 21:54Speaker 4: in grammar school. See I had a lonely childhood. And
- 21:58Speaker 4: when you come right down to her. I mean, oh,
- 22:00Speaker 4: that's my affair, isn't it? It is that, certainly is.
- 22:04Speaker 10: I have succeeded in removing the hinges to the door,
- 22:07Speaker 10: and I find inside it is not a closet, but
- 22:09Speaker 10: much larger. It is I think a dressing room. I
- 22:13Speaker 10: have not yet been inside, but I am about to enter.
- 22:16Speaker 2: What was I talking about?
- 22:17Speaker 8: Oh?
- 22:18Speaker 2: Yeah, bats?
- 22:18Speaker 4: Well, the bat flying back and forth in this room.
- 22:23Speaker 2: Did you hear that?
- 22:24Speaker 6: Did you hear it?
- 22:25Speaker 2: Doctor Reid?
- 22:26Speaker 4: Must have knocked something over in the dashing room. A chair,
- 22:28Speaker 4: A chair, yeah, heavy chair, By the sound, I'm at
- 22:30Speaker 4: the chair. Whatever it was must have fallen right right
- 22:32Speaker 4: over my head.
- 22:33Speaker 5: That's why it sounded.
- 22:35Speaker 4: I can see a small stain forming right on the ceiling,
- 22:38Speaker 4: right or right over my head. Something rand across my foot,
- 22:41Speaker 4: just the rat, I think it was. I've always hated rats,
- 22:45Speaker 4: most people do, of course. That staying up there bothers me.
- 22:49Speaker 4: It's gotten so big so soon. I think I'll take
- 22:52Speaker 4: a chance and bother reading asking what it is?
- 22:54Speaker 5: Doctor Reed read?
- 22:57Speaker 2: Can you hear me? Are you all right?
- 23:00Speaker 7: Hello?
- 23:01Speaker 5: Well he didn't answer.
- 23:03Speaker 4: I think he's just a little bit deaf. Think, so,
- 23:07Speaker 4: what do you suppose he's found.
- 23:08Speaker 5: Eh, I'm afraid there's rather dull for you listeners.
- 23:11Speaker 4: I'm not finding it.
- 23:12Speaker 2: Of course.
- 23:17Speaker 4: I heard him cough. Did you hear that cough? I
- 23:18Speaker 4: hope he's all right. He got out of a sick
- 23:21Speaker 4: bed to come here this evening. You know, he was
- 23:22Speaker 4: gassed in the First World War, and this place is
- 23:24Speaker 4: beginning to get on my nerves. A wee bit, just
- 23:26Speaker 4: a teensy wingsy bit.
- 23:32Speaker 10: Read speaking.
- 23:35Speaker 4: Hello, he switched off. That's a bad cough he's got.
- 23:40Speaker 4: I feel so lonely, been alone so much in my life.
- 23:43Speaker 4: Not so much now, of course, but when I was younger,
- 23:45Speaker 4: I was just alone so much of the time, you know,
- 23:47Speaker 4: struggling to get ahead, living in a hall bedroom, wondering
- 23:49Speaker 4: where my next meal is coming from.
- 23:52Speaker 2: I get the blues just remembering.
- 23:53Speaker 4: It seem sad young people having to spend so much
- 23:57Speaker 4: time alone.
- 23:58Speaker 2: Sad for old people too.
- 23:59Speaker 4: Of course, I'm saying a course, a lot of courses.
- 24:02Speaker 5: I am hey, that's staying on the ceiling. It's grown amazingly.
- 24:07Speaker 4: It's actually beginning to drip. I mean form bubbles.
- 24:11Speaker 5: I'll start dropping soon. Colored bubbles.
- 24:13Speaker 4: They seem to be shaped stain like a body lying
- 24:17Speaker 4: on its back with its arm stretched out.
- 24:19Speaker 5: It's cheerful.
- 24:22Speaker 4: I certainly advised mister McDonald to have this place pulled down.
- 24:25Speaker 4: I'll go upstairs in a minute or two to see
- 24:27Speaker 4: how doctor Ree's making not you know, listeners, are I
- 24:29Speaker 4: really believe I go completely crazy if I had to
- 24:30Speaker 4: stay here much longer. Wears you down. That's exactly what
- 24:33Speaker 4: it does. It wears you down. It's so close and
- 24:35Speaker 4: musty in here. I feel sort of trapped.
- 24:38Speaker 5: I don't know why I said that. That's that's what
- 24:40Speaker 5: they call this place, you know, the death trap there?
- 24:42Speaker 4: What did I tell you that's staying started to drip drops,
- 24:44Speaker 4: drip drops, drip drops, drip drops.
- 24:47Speaker 5: I'll catch the next on in my hand, like.
- 24:49Speaker 4: Read doctor Reed. I'm going upstairs now, Listeners, I'm afraid
- 24:55Speaker 4: something has happened to doctor Reed. I'm not kidnap. I
- 24:56Speaker 4: mean this is on the level which room could be.
- 24:58Speaker 4: Not right, no, right, right, this is I think.
- 25:03Speaker 5: Ah, evening, gentlemen and madam.
- 25:07Speaker 4: I'm so glad to see I was just aching to
- 25:10Speaker 4: see somebody, anybody. I've been so lonely down there. What
- 25:15Speaker 4: have you done with the doctor huh, I know, I
- 25:18Speaker 4: know he's been hurt. See the color of the bubble
- 25:19Speaker 4: on my hand.
- 25:20Speaker 5: What have you done with him? Make way, please, gentlemen,
- 25:23Speaker 5: make way.
- 25:25Speaker 4: Well, this isn't the funniest darn thing. This can't be
- 25:31Speaker 4: doctor Reid lying here. He didn't have a redbeard. Don't
- 25:34Speaker 4: crowd me, gentlemen. Don't don't crowd me.
- 25:36Speaker 2: Please.
- 25:36Speaker 7: Huh.
- 25:37Speaker 4: You want me to go where with you you want
- 25:40Speaker 4: me to do? What?
- 25:41Speaker 7: Speak up, gentlemen, to the cliffs.
- 25:44Speaker 4: Down to the cliffs, you mean right now? Well, all right,
- 25:48Speaker 4: if you'll come with me. I don't want to be
- 25:50Speaker 4: alone anymore. You will come with me, all of you,
- 25:53Speaker 4: all four of you, you too, ma'am? Oh good, Come on,
- 25:56Speaker 4: man to the cliffs.
- 26:04Speaker 7: He jumped over the cliff. He jumped over the cliff.
- 26:08Speaker 4: McDonald, he jumped.
- 26:09Speaker 7: Over, mister McDonald, mister Thorpe.
- 26:12Speaker 4: You may come in to see doctor Reid. Now. Doctor
- 26:15Speaker 4: Reid is conscious. You may see him now.
- 26:20Speaker 7: Is he able to talk?
- 26:22Speaker 4: Just for a few minutes in here?
- 26:28Speaker 10: Come in, Come in, gentlemen.
- 26:30Speaker 7: How are you doctor Reid? We've been waiting to see you.
- 26:34Speaker 10: Yes, and I must apologize, gentlemen, I had a most
- 26:38Speaker 10: unfortunate accident. Hemorrhage, hemorrhage, yes, my lungs, you know no, gentlemen.
- 26:46Speaker 7: Hemorrhage, Doctor Reid?
- 26:48Speaker 8: What happened in that house? What happened to Smith? We've
- 26:51Speaker 8: just been listening to a playback of the recordings you
- 26:54Speaker 8: made out there.
- 26:54Speaker 10: Smith, isn't he with you?
- 26:56Speaker 9: We've just heard the recording, Doctor Reids, myth jumped over
- 27:00Speaker 9: the cliff into the ocean. Oh that poor boy, Doctor Reid,
- 27:06Speaker 9: Will you please tell us what happened? We heard on
- 27:09Speaker 9: the recording there were ghosts in that house.
- 27:12Speaker 6: Ghosts.
- 27:13Speaker 7: I didn't see any ghosts. That's Smith. What about him?
- 27:17Speaker 10: If he went over the cliff, it was fear that
- 27:20Speaker 10: drove him over? Gentlemen, I didn't see any ghosts. As
- 27:26Speaker 10: for that unfortunate young man, who can say now what
- 27:32Speaker 10: he saw?
- 27:34Speaker 8: Oh?
- 27:35Speaker 7: Thought he saw?
- 27:55Speaker 3: Thank you Ralph Edwards for displaying your versatility by appearing
