  SPEAKER_00: this is what a rising sign in astrology is and here's what yours means kind

  SPEAKER_00: of episode.

• 2:27
  SPEAKER_00: if you're listening to this,

  SPEAKER_00: you already know what a rising sign is in the most general sense.

  SPEAKER_00: You probably already know that it's one of the big three, sun, moon, rising sign.

  SPEAKER_00: You likely know that your rising sign tells us how you show up in the world,

  SPEAKER_00: how other people see you when they meet you,
• 2:48
  SPEAKER_00: what their initial impressions of you are.

  SPEAKER_00: It's yourself, it's your basic temperament, your social persona.

  SPEAKER_00: The person people talk to when you're out in public.

  SPEAKER_00: It's your appearance, your body even, your physicality.

  SPEAKER_00: So we know that's what a rising sign is and that it does these things.

  SPEAKER_00: But you may have noticed that in real life,
• 3:13
  SPEAKER_00: when you're out there traversing the world,
• 3:16
  SPEAKER_00: that not all people with the same rising sign come across in the same way.
• 3:23
  SPEAKER_00: And maybe you've wondered why that is,
• 3:25
  SPEAKER_00: you know, like,
• 3:26
  SPEAKER_00: why do I know two Gemini risings,
• 3:29
  SPEAKER_00: but one seems super Gemini,
• 3:33
  SPEAKER_00: like the stereotypical archetypal Gemini,
• 3:37
  SPEAKER_00: and one maybe doesn't come across as so intensely Gemini at all.
• 3:42
  SPEAKER_00: These are questions that we often have as we get a little deeper into astrology.
• 3:50
  SPEAKER_00: So what we're going to talk about here are some of the reasons how and why
• 3:55
  SPEAKER_00: the same rising sign can show up differently from person to person.

  SPEAKER_00: And of course, you know, there can be many reasons why this would happen.
• 4:06
  SPEAKER_00: You know, obviously people are more than just their rising signs.
• 4:10
  SPEAKER_00: Two Aries risings can have very different charts.
• 4:13
  SPEAKER_00: The sun could be in different houses.
• 4:16
  SPEAKER_00: Moon can be in different houses, different signs.
• 4:19
  SPEAKER_00: All of the other planets are going to be in different houses and different signs,
• 4:23
  SPEAKER_00: different degrees of different signs.
• 4:26
  SPEAKER_00: All of these things matter.
• 4:29
  SPEAKER_00: But Even when you're just considering the Ascendant without the entire chart
• 4:35
  SPEAKER_00: in mind, they can still be different.
• 4:38
  SPEAKER_00: And knowing this is important because interpreting the Ascendant
• 4:44
  SPEAKER_00: and interpreting it well or with some nuance is a very important component
• 4:49
  SPEAKER_00: of learning to read a natal chart.
• 4:53
  SPEAKER_00: This episode actually came to me,
• 4:55
  SPEAKER_00: by the way,
• 4:56
  SPEAKER_00: because I was thinking about someone in my own life who, like me, has Libra rising.

  SPEAKER_00: And there are definitely similarities between us.
• 5:07
  SPEAKER_00: No doubt about it, there are a number of striking similarities.
• 5:11
  SPEAKER_00: There are things about both of us that I can look at and say, yes, I can see the Libra rising.
• 5:17
  SPEAKER_00: We both have many Libra rising qualities.
• 5:21
  SPEAKER_00: But we also show up in the world very differently.
• 5:24
  SPEAKER_00: And in fact,
• 5:25
  SPEAKER_00: we often tend to express those Libran qualities in the world in very different ways.
• 5:32
  SPEAKER_00: We don't always use our Libra energy the same way.
• 5:36
  SPEAKER_00: It's there for both of us, but it comes out differently.
• 5:41
  SPEAKER_00: And astrologically, there are some really good reasons for that.
• 5:45
  SPEAKER_00: Because knowing someone's rising sign is only part of the Ascendant story.
• 5:51
  SPEAKER_00: Now, you've probably heard me talk before about chart rulers.
• 5:57
  SPEAKER_00: If you haven't, please go listen sometime soon to the episode on that topic.

• 6:04
  SPEAKER_00: your chart ruler is the planet that rules your rising sign
• 6:08
  SPEAKER_00: because every zodiac sign has a planetary ruler.
• 6:12
  SPEAKER_00: So if you're an Aries rising, Mars rules your chart.
• 6:15
  SPEAKER_00: If you're a Sagittarius rising, Jupiter rules your chart.
• 6:18
  SPEAKER_00: If you're a Libra or Taurus rising, Venus rules your chart and so on.
• 6:24
  SPEAKER_00: And once we identify that planet,
• 6:26
  SPEAKER_00: the planet that has rulership of your rising sign or your chart ruler,
• 6:32
  SPEAKER_00: the ruler of your entire chart,
• 6:35
  SPEAKER_00: we can follow it into the chart and To give us more information about what it is
• 6:42
  SPEAKER_00: that that ascendant is really doing and where and how it shows up in your life.

  SPEAKER_00: So for your chart or any chart that you're looking at, you'd want to determine the chart ruler.

  SPEAKER_00: Find that planet in the natal chart and then determine the answers to the following questions.

  SPEAKER_00: First, what sign is the chart ruler in?
• 7:08
  SPEAKER_00: Second, what house is it in?
• 7:11
  SPEAKER_00: Third, what condition is it in?
• 7:14
  SPEAKER_00: This is where we talk about dignity and debility.
• 7:17
  SPEAKER_00: There is also an episode on that topic if you need to go back and listen to that.

  SPEAKER_00: But is your ruling planet in domicile or in its home sign where it functions really well?
• 7:30
  SPEAKER_00: Is it exalted where it absolutely shines and really loves to be?
• 7:35
  SPEAKER_00: Is it in fall?
• 7:37
  SPEAKER_00: Is it in detriment?
• 7:39
  SPEAKER_00: Because those make the natural expression of that planet a little harder to work
• 7:43
  SPEAKER_00: with and that's going to be different.
• 7:46
  SPEAKER_00: Maybe it's none of those.
• 7:47
  SPEAKER_00: Maybe it's in a sign that's just kind of neutral.

  SPEAKER_00: By the way,

  SPEAKER_00: All of those things give us additional information about how

  SPEAKER_00: that rising sign actually gets expressed.

  SPEAKER_00: Now, I could describe this theoretically all day long,
• 8:33
  SPEAKER_00: but what I thought might be helpful is to demonstrate this concept by looking
• 8:37
  SPEAKER_00: at three charts with the same exact rising sign so that we can see more clearly how
• 8:43
  SPEAKER_00: the same rising sign can show up differently in these three different people.
• 8:48
  SPEAKER_00: All three of these people that I'm using for this episode have Libra rising.
• 8:54
  SPEAKER_00: Again, it works best here to keep the sign consistent across all examples.

  SPEAKER_00: So we have three Libra rising people and Venus is the ruler of Libra.
• 9:05
  SPEAKER_00: So Venus rules all three charts.
• 9:09
  SPEAKER_00: But in each of these people's charts,
• 9:11
  SPEAKER_00: Venus is in very different places and in different conditions.
• 9:16
  SPEAKER_00: And once we follow Venus,
• 9:18
  SPEAKER_00: these three Libra rising charts start telling three very different stories.

  SPEAKER_00: All right, first, what does Libra rising mean?
• 9:28
  SPEAKER_00: Let's start with that and establish that quickly so that no one gets confused
• 9:33
  SPEAKER_00: in case you're unsure.
• 9:35
  SPEAKER_00: Libra is the cardinal air sign.
• 9:38
  SPEAKER_00: And it is ruled by Venus.
• 9:41
  SPEAKER_00: It's the sign of partnership and diplomacy and harmony and fairness and balance.
• 9:50
  SPEAKER_00: It also really likes aesthetics.
• 9:52
  SPEAKER_00: It likes it when the world looks nice or when things are pleasing to the eye.
• 9:58
  SPEAKER_00: You know, it's an air sign.
• 10:00
  SPEAKER_00: So it likes to connect with people and be with other people and talk and exchange ideas.
• 10:05
  SPEAKER_00: It likes to make conversation.
• 10:08
  SPEAKER_00: And overall,
• 10:09
  SPEAKER_00: all these things combined,
• 10:10
  SPEAKER_00: Libra is known for being the most relational sign in the zodiac.
• 10:15
  SPEAKER_00: So with Libra rising,
• 10:16
  SPEAKER_00: we might expect someone to approach the world with a good degree
• 10:21
  SPEAKER_00: of social awareness.
• 10:23
  SPEAKER_00: There can be a real instinct for reading other people,
• 10:27
  SPEAKER_00: finding common ground,
• 10:29
  SPEAKER_00: creating harmony,
• 10:31
  SPEAKER_00: helping people get along with one another,
• 10:34
  SPEAKER_00: relating, negotiating, that's a big one, or understanding different perspectives.

  SPEAKER_00: Understanding different perspectives is so important with Libra energy, right?
• 10:46
  SPEAKER_00: So this is probably someone who wants to make sure everyone feels heard and understood.

  SPEAKER_00: There may also be an awareness of aesthetics,
• 10:56
  SPEAKER_00: as I mentioned, an awareness of their presentation in the world.

  SPEAKER_00: You know,
• 11:01
  SPEAKER_00: maybe they have a notable sense of style or they dress themselves well
• 11:05
  SPEAKER_00: or just really well put together or something like that.
• 11:09
  SPEAKER_00: And of course, you'll also find some of the more stereotypical descriptions of this sign.

  SPEAKER_00: Libra risings are charming.
• 11:18
  SPEAKER_00: They can be, right?
• 11:19
  SPEAKER_00: They can be attractive, maybe.
• 11:21
  SPEAKER_00: Sometimes people see them as attractive even
• 11:24
  SPEAKER_00: when they're not considered conventionally beautiful.
• 11:27
  SPEAKER_00: Some of them are, though.
• 11:28
  SPEAKER_00: They can be very agreeable, maybe.
• 11:31
  SPEAKER_00: But that's kind of where the general interpretations in astrology can get too simplistic.
• 11:38
  SPEAKER_00: Because there are other factors like what if Pluto is sitting on that Libra Ascendant?
• 11:44
  SPEAKER_00: What if Mars is there?
• 11:46
  SPEAKER_00: What if Venus,
• 11:48
  SPEAKER_00: the ruler of that Libra Ascendant, is in Aries where it doesn't really like to be?
• 11:53
  SPEAKER_00: What if it's in Pisces where it loves to be?
• 11:57
  SPEAKER_00: What if Venus itself is sitting directly on the Ascendant?
• 12:02
  SPEAKER_00: Those charts aren't going to look the same.
• 12:06
  SPEAKER_00: They're not going to function in the same way.
• 12:09
  SPEAKER_00: So let's follow Venus in these three cases.
• 12:13
  SPEAKER_00: Let's look at chart number one.
• 12:16
  SPEAKER_00: This is a Libra rising chart with Pluto on the Ascendant and its ruler Venus in Virgo.

  SPEAKER_00: And actually,
• 12:25
  SPEAKER_00: I'm going to be using my own chart for this first one because obviously this is
• 12:31
  SPEAKER_00: the chart I can speak about with the most first-hand words.
• 12:34
  SPEAKER_00: Life experience.
• 12:35
  SPEAKER_00: I know this chart really well.
• 12:37
  SPEAKER_00: I live it every day.
• 12:39
  SPEAKER_00: I have Libra rising with my ascendant at 13 degrees, 50 minutes of Libra.
• 12:47
  SPEAKER_00: But I also have Pluto at 14 degrees, zero minutes of Libra.
• 12:54
  SPEAKER_00: That's just 10 minutes apart.
• 12:56
  SPEAKER_00: So Pluto is essentially sitting right on my ascendant.
• 13:01
  SPEAKER_00: And already that complicates the usual description of Libra rising.
• 13:06
  SPEAKER_00: It already does.
• 13:08
  SPEAKER_00: There absolutely are Libra qualities there that I recognize in myself for sure.
• 13:14
  SPEAKER_00: Through and through there are.
• 13:16
  SPEAKER_00: Relationships have always mattered enormously to me.
• 13:19
  SPEAKER_00: I love people.
• 13:20
  SPEAKER_00: I am always seeing multiple sides of things.
• 13:24
  SPEAKER_00: I can't stop myself from doing it, actually.
• 13:27
  SPEAKER_00: I care very, very much about fairness and justice.
• 13:32
  SPEAKER_00: I care about how things are communicated.
• 13:35
  SPEAKER_00: I want things to be communicated with kindness and respect.
• 13:40
  SPEAKER_00: I'm very aware typically of interpersonal dynamics and I'm also admittedly a people pleaser.
• 13:47
  SPEAKER_00: That's one of Libra's shadow qualities.
• 13:50
  SPEAKER_00: I can also be very indecisive precisely because I do see so many sides to things
• 13:56
  SPEAKER_00: and I do see so many possibilities available.
• 13:59
  SPEAKER_00: It's really hard to narrow things down and just make a choice.

  SPEAKER_00: But I don't necessarily think that The stereotypical light,
• 14:09
  SPEAKER_00: easygoing, ultra charming Libra rising completely describes how I enter a room.
• 14:16
  SPEAKER_00: I don't think.
• 14:17
  SPEAKER_00: Why?
• 14:18
  SPEAKER_00: Well, Pluto is there.
• 14:21
  SPEAKER_00: And Pluto is very different energy.
• 14:23
  SPEAKER_00: Pluto adds intensity.
• 14:25
  SPEAKER_00: It adds depth.
• 14:26
  SPEAKER_00: It wants to know what's underneath things.
• 14:29
  SPEAKER_00: It's not interested in light and easygoing.
• 14:33
  SPEAKER_00: It has a more piercing kind of quality, right?
• 14:36
  SPEAKER_00: It can make the presence of someone more penetrating.
• 14:40
  SPEAKER_00: It can make other people feel a little more exposed or vulnerable.
• 14:45
  SPEAKER_00: People may react a little more strongly to a Pluto ascendant person
• 14:51
  SPEAKER_00: than they would expect to based solely on this particular rising sign.
• 14:56
  SPEAKER_00: There's almost a kind of Scorpio flavor to it.
• 15:00
  SPEAKER_00: So which one am I?
• 15:02
  SPEAKER_00: Am I a Libra rising or am I Pluto on the Ascendant?
• 15:06
  SPEAKER_00: Well, of course, I'm both.
• 15:08
  SPEAKER_00: There's one layer on top of the original layer.
• 15:12
  SPEAKER_00: But now we can also go a step further.
• 15:15
  SPEAKER_00: If Libra is rising, Venus rules the chart.
• 15:18
  SPEAKER_00: And this tells us more about this Pluto in Libra, Pluto rising in Libra story.

  SPEAKER_00: So where is Venus?
• 15:28
  SPEAKER_00: This was our first question, right?
• 15:30
  SPEAKER_00: Finding Venus and figuring out what she's up
• 15:34
  SPEAKER_00: to tells us what this whole ascendant configuration is actually meant to do.

  SPEAKER_00: What is this Libra rising with the Pluto cherry on top here to do in my real life?
• 15:47
  SPEAKER_00: Why do I have this in my chart at all?
• 15:50
  SPEAKER_00: Where is this Pluto rising, Libra rising energy of mine meant to be directed?
• 15:56
  SPEAKER_00: And what is it here to accomplish or do?
• 15:59
  SPEAKER_00: Well, we can see this.
• 16:01
  SPEAKER_00: My Venus is in Virgo in the 11th house.
• 16:06
  SPEAKER_00: And Venus is traditionally considered to be in fall in Virgo.
• 16:11
  SPEAKER_00: It doesn't feel all that comfortable in this sign
• 16:14
  SPEAKER_00: because it can't really express its easygoing,
• 16:20
  SPEAKER_00: laid-back Venusian traits all that easily here.
• 16:23
  SPEAKER_00: Virgo is not easygoing.
• 16:25
  SPEAKER_00: It's not an easygoing, laid-back sign at all.
• 16:28
  SPEAKER_00: So Venus has to get creative and find different ways of being when she's in Virgo.
• 16:35
  SPEAKER_00: Now, I want to make an important distinction here
• 16:41
  SPEAKER_00: because this will inevitably impact some of you
• 16:45
  SPEAKER_00: because dignity language can sound pretty judgmental if we take it too literally.
• 16:51
  SPEAKER_00: Having Venus or any planet in fall,
• 16:54
  SPEAKER_00: you know, doesn't mean that you have a bad Venus or a bad Mars or whatever, right?

  SPEAKER_00: Having Venus in detriment, like when she's in Aries, doesn't mean that you have...

  SPEAKER_00: It means Venus is operating in a sign whose instincts aren't necessarily the same
• 17:13
  SPEAKER_00: as Venus's own instincts.
• 17:16
  SPEAKER_00: Venus wants to, you know, attract, it wants to connect, appreciate, enjoy, harmonize things.
• 17:25
  SPEAKER_00: Virgo analyzes, it discerns, it refines.
• 17:30
  SPEAKER_00: Sometimes it gets persnickety about refining things or overly perfectionistic.
• 17:36
  SPEAKER_00: It notices all the things that need to be improved instead of just enjoying

  SPEAKER_00: the beauty of what already is, like Venus does.
• 17:47
  SPEAKER_00: And Virgo wants to be useful rather than relaxed, as Venus often is.

  SPEAKER_00: So for me,
• 17:54
  SPEAKER_00: my Venusian way of relating isn't necessarily just about creating pleasantness
• 18:00
  SPEAKER_00: and lightness.
• 18:02
  SPEAKER_00: There can be a lot of discernment involved.

  SPEAKER_00: There can be analysis,
• 18:07
  SPEAKER_00: helping also,
• 18:09
  SPEAKER_00: improving, trying to understand, you know, how something might work better.
• 18:15
  SPEAKER_00: Virgo really, really likes to be of service to others.
• 18:19
  SPEAKER_00: You know, it wants to be of service to people.
• 18:22
  SPEAKER_00: And so because this is the ruler of the rising sign,
• 18:27
  SPEAKER_00: we can then follow this line of thinking and hypothesize that my Libra rising energy
• 18:33
  SPEAKER_00: and this Venusian energy is going to be filtered through all this kind
• 18:39
  SPEAKER_00: of Virgo expression.
• 18:41
  SPEAKER_00: You're taking Libra energy and Venus energy and putting it through a Virgo filter.
• 18:48
  SPEAKER_00: So this could be about taking that natural social intelligence
• 18:53
  SPEAKER_00: and natural understanding of people and filtering it through a desire to serve
• 18:59
  SPEAKER_00: and help others.
• 19:01
  SPEAKER_00: Filtering it through acts of service or doing really good,
• 19:05
  SPEAKER_00: high quality,
• 19:06
  SPEAKER_00: sometimes methodical work And constantly refining things to make them better.

  SPEAKER_00: It can also be about developing a craft because it takes a lot of work to develop a craft.
• 19:18
  SPEAKER_00: It takes showing up every day to develop a craft.
• 19:21
  SPEAKER_00: These are things associated with Virgo.
• 19:25
  SPEAKER_00: So now we can start to see how this rising sign was meant to be expressed.

  SPEAKER_00: And then we go to the next question.
• 19:33
  SPEAKER_00: Where is this Venus?
• 19:35
  SPEAKER_00: Okay, well, she's in the 11th house.
• 19:39
  SPEAKER_00: This is the house associated with groups,
• 19:42
  SPEAKER_00: communities, networks, friendships, audiences, and collective kinds of spaces.
• 19:51
  SPEAKER_00: And suddenly now,
• 19:52
  SPEAKER_00: when you see where she is,
• 19:53
  SPEAKER_00: this Libra rising starts to become much more of a specific kind of story.
• 19:58
  SPEAKER_00: The social orientation of Libra is still there,
• 20:01
  SPEAKER_00: but being routed through the sign of Virgo and toward 11th house territory.
• 20:09
  SPEAKER_00: So this could indicate that someone's going to take that Libra and Venus energy, express it,
• 20:19
  SPEAKER_00: Now,
• 20:23
  SPEAKER_00: meanwhile, you still have Pluto in the mix on top of that Ascendant, right?

  SPEAKER_00: So we have to account for that.
• 20:29
  SPEAKER_00: What does this person,
• 20:31
  SPEAKER_00: this person being me, I feel weird talking about myself in third person here.

  SPEAKER_00: Sometimes it just flows out like that.

  SPEAKER_00: What does this person do with that intensity?

  SPEAKER_00: Well, Pluto Wants to transform things.
• 20:45
  SPEAKER_00: That's what it always wants to do.

  SPEAKER_00: Now, of course,
• 20:47
