Transcript
- 0:00You're listening to Strictly Business Podcast with Lindsay Williams.
- 0:05The JSC has closed its doors for another day, so it's time for the 5 o'clock
- 0:08shadow.
- 0:09And as always on a Wednesday, I speak to Skulk Lowe.
- 0:11Skulk is a Portfolio Manager at PSG Wealth Old Oak in Cape Town.
- 0:15Skulk, do you mind if I tell you a bit of a story and ramble on a bit?
- 0:18Do you mind that you can sit back and listen?
- 0:20No, we've got nothing happening on the market, so by all means.
- 0:24Okay.
- 0:25Where could I start?
- 0:27Yes, I think what I'll do is start when the new Air Force One landed in Ankara,
- 0:31the capital of Turkey, yesterday for the NATO
- 0:34meeting.
- 0:34Donald Trump got off and he was met by Erdogan, the leader of Turkey.
- 0:39And off they went.
- 0:41Well, off waddled Trump.
- 0:44And when he went to inspect a line of troops with the Turkish president, he sort
- 0:50of got a
- 0:51bit lost.
- 0:51And he sort of stood staring into.
- 0:54Space.
- 0:54And I got this footage from Russian TV and it was plastered everywhere.
- 0:57It wasn't what was shown on certain channels in America.
- 1:01But he didn't know where he was.
- 1:02And you saw the you saw it again, grab his arm and sort of guide him.
- 1:07He did it.
- 1:08He did it twice because Trump looked completely discombobulated.
- 1:11And it sort of got me annoyed, firstly, because the man shouldn't be in charge.
- 1:15He's clearly physically and mentally unfit, but also because no one.
- 1:20does anything about it in the administration they just cover it up and i
- 1:23don't know why so anyway i got annoyed this morning and i thought i'm going to
- 1:26take a couple
- 1:27of hours off and go to a lovely town the nearest town to me it's about 8k's away
- 1:32it's called dockham it's all 17th
- 1:3418th and 19th century buildings canals and windmills and all that stereotypical dutch
- 1:40stuff really
- 1:41lovely.
- 1:41Sat down next to a canal, 10 o'clock.
- 1:45And had a double espresso, a glass of water, and then another double espresso.
- 1:49And then this huge noise broke the calm of the morning, Skunk.
- 1:53A really, a roar.
- 1:55And then it got louder and louder, deafening.
- 1:58And honestly, I'm not joking, the table and the coffee cup started to shake.
- 2:04And then it disappeared.
- 2:05And then another one came along.
- 2:07And just through the clouds, you could occasionally see a fighter jet with the
- 2:11wheels down, coming into land at the
- 2:14local...
- 2:15military airport called Leuwarden.
- 2:17And normally there's three or four of them, and you see them quite regularly,
- 2:21almost every day, in fact.
- 2:22But this time I counted at least 20 coming in of different shapes and sizes, the
- 2:27biggest being the F-35.
- 2:29And I thought, I looked it up, and it's a joint NATO-Royal Dutch Air Force training
- 2:35session,
- 2:36essentially.
- 2:37Joint exercises, we'll call it that.
- 2:39And I thought, this is NATO, and thank you, America.
- 2:42for contributing so much to NATO.
- 2:44And then I thought, you know what?
- 2:46Also, NATO is important to you, Mr.
- 2:50Trump, so stop trashing countries like Spain, which he did in a press conference
- 2:55yesterday, saying,
- 2:58I'm not going to do any more trade with Spain.
- 2:59I'm not even going to allow people to visit Spain.
- 3:02He went on and on and on, and that got me angry.
- 3:04I went to get a nice, quiet coffee.
- 3:06The planes came over.
- 3:07I got angry again.
- 3:09And then, of course, the so-called memorandum of understanding went out the
- 3:12window yesterday.
- 3:13They're fighting with each other.
- 3:15And the oil price is up in 24 hours around about 9%, 10%.
- 3:20So we're back to where we were.
- 3:22It's quite extraordinary and can become a little bit depressing, Skunk.
- 3:27Yeah, I think it's depressing.
- 3:29It's not can become depressing.
- 3:32It is depressing.
- 3:33I mean, you could see the market was really, really upbeat.
- 3:38for the past few weeks.
- 3:40I mean, everybody was talking as if the war's over.
- 3:43I've got Bloomberg behind me during the day.
- 3:47And it was strange.
- 3:49It was a strange feeling yesterday with the boulder of him arriving in Turkey,
- 3:55getting off the
- 3:56plane.
- 3:57And I got a similar feeling.
- 3:58And then today, it's just that clip where he said, I'm done.
- 4:04You know, I'm done.
- 4:06And referring to this Iran story, it's the never-ending war story, this.
- 4:14It's not ending.
- 4:15This is not positive.
- 4:16Here we're sitting.
- 4:17I'm watching a Brent oil price touching the $80 per barrel
- 4:24again.
- 4:25And if the straight closes up in totality again, which it seems like it's doing, I'm
- 4:31looking at a
- 4:32graph here of how… things progress.
- 4:35The straight opened up two, three days ago and we started to see
- 4:42some proper movement in there.
- 4:44And I'm looking at the graph today.
- 4:46It's quiet again.
- 4:48It's quiet.
- 4:49That's not good.
- 4:50That's really not good for the world price and ultimately it's not going to be good
- 4:54for the globe.
- 4:56Yeah, it's utterly, utterly disappointing.
- 4:59I mean, somebody made the comment this morning.
- 5:03for any party to want to be warring during the soccer World Cup or the football World
- 5:10Cup, then you know how bad things are, because that usually is the one thing that
- 5:16should unite
- 5:17a globe.
- 5:19It's very disturbing, it's very dangerous, very depressing, any sort of word you want
- 5:25to conjure up, but you'd think we'd
- 5:26be numb to it after, gosh, how long has it been now?
- 5:29How many days have we...
- 5:32The U.S.
- 5:32been at war with Iran?
- 5:34I know exactly.
- 5:35I know exactly.
- 5:36It's too long.
- 5:37That's how many days.
- 5:38Too long.
- 5:39It's been too long.
- 5:40Okay.
- 5:41And it's quite pathetic the number of times it was over and the so-called
- 5:47negotiations are going well.
- 5:48And Vitkov and Jared Kushner, who are completely ill-equipped to be doing our
- 5:54bidding for
- 5:55us, which is what they are doing because we're part of the free world.
- 5:58But anyway, Scott, the markets.
- 6:00Of course, they're down today, but not down as much as they might have been when,
- 6:06for example, you first
- 6:07started plying your trade on the JSC and in financial markets.
- 6:11Again, they're sort of immune to it by now.
- 6:14Yeah, it is.
- 6:17But there's a definite fear in the market.
- 6:19I mean, I'm looking at the JSC.
- 6:22It's down 1.8% today.
- 6:25Resources, 3.8%.
- 6:27I mean, that's major movements.
- 6:29That's a major movement.
- 6:30And if we look at the U.S.
- 6:32currently, I mean, Dow Jones, which usually tend to be the proxy for more
- 6:37value approach for the
- 6:39U.S., that's down 1.5%.
- 6:42And we know these hyperscalers, these massive companies, have been under
- 6:46pressure anyway.
- 6:47Nasdaq has been under pressure, and that's dwindling downwards.
- 6:50So, yeah, it's not positive.
- 6:55But, I mean, you mentioned the word numbness.
- 6:58There's sort of a numbness towards this.
- 7:01Yes, I do get the same feeling because I think if we had a I remember when the
- 7:08war actually broke out between Ukraine and Russia.
- 7:12There was a massive, massive pullback.
- 7:15When we saw Liberation Day last year, I mean, that had a massive, massive
- 7:22pullback.
- 7:24Even within the start of the U.S.-Iran war, there were some big movements in the
- 7:30beginning.
- 7:30And you would have thought, you know, the memorandum of understanding is off the
- 7:37table.
- 7:38We are still at war and we're going to be bombing each other.
- 7:41That would have had a much, much worse effect on the market.
- 7:44I do ever want to caution that the worst is still to come.
- 7:49If we see these world processes, and we see these, let's call it inflationary
- 7:56activators continue to run, this is going to have a very, very bad effect on markets
- 8:03in general
- 8:03going forward.
- 8:04First the economies and then markets.
- 8:06But yeah, let's cross fingers that they can get some understanding or get the
- 8:13right people
- 8:13involved in one room to get an understanding.
- 8:16And you know what I'm meaning.
- 8:17They had plenty of chances to do that, so I'm not hopeful.
- 8:20Let's have a look at other things now.
- 8:22Why are nest person pros doing so well today?
- 8:25Yeah, okay.
- 8:26So firstly, it's a simple one.
- 8:27I mean, we've had Tencent.
- 8:31I mentioned to my team one stage last week that I still need to find a day
- 8:38where I don't wake up and get a notification on my phone.
- 8:42I've got all these different kinds of notifications.
- 8:44Tencent is trading a new 52-week low.
- 8:50Alibaba trading at a new 52.
- 8:51two-week low.
- 8:52So China has been under massive pressure.
- 8:57So we also had the extra news that also
- 9:03that what is that company?
- 9:06Oh, with an S.
- 9:08Company with an S.
- 9:10Give me more.
- 9:10Yeah, within process.
- 9:12Within process, they're holding that company.
- 9:14It's a company where, it's sort of a platform where tech or programmers
- 9:20interact with
- 9:21each other they ask each other questions and there's a that's something that a
- 9:27process invested
- 9:28quite quite a bit into and and last week it came out that they had another another
- 9:34write-off of another
- 9:34six billion rand and effectively um that was 84 percent write-off of a company
- 9:41that they paid you know quite a bit i think i recall something at 18 billion
- 9:46rand um But I
- 9:48mean, I think the market realized, and on that specific day, I think it was last
- 9:54week, Wednesday or
- 9:55Thursday, if I'm not mistaken.
- 9:56Yeah.
- 9:57That specific day, the market cap.
- 10:00of what is the process dropped by 45
- 10:07billion rand in that one day on a six billion rand write-off.
- 10:12So we did have a few overreactions.
- 10:15We had the overreaction in terms of Tencent not doing well, and then we had
- 10:19the overreaction on certain
- 10:21write-off or impairments that they had within the company.
- 10:26And then the good news started we we first had results coming out that looked pretty
- 10:33solid
- 10:34then secondly we we yesterday heard that this upbeat with chinese ai
- 10:41also now looking to create these chip stocks or it was a deep stick chips chalk
- 10:46stocks that will be able to
- 10:47compete with the likes of the nvidia's nvidia took took a hiding but chinese
- 10:52stocks definitely definitely more
- 10:54positive over the past few days, and today was no exception.
- 10:58We had Alibaba that had the positivity on.
- 11:04They were removed on some US list.
- 11:09Oh, man, why am I blank?
- 11:11I'll tell you now what's that list.
- 11:13This is the second time you've gone blank today.
- 11:16What's going on here?
- 11:18This is typically a Friday thing.
- 11:20This is holiday, Brian.
- 11:21You see, it's not your holiday.
- 11:22It's Northern Hemisphere, but it's filtering.
- 11:24Is it down or?
- 11:25Yes, down to you.
- 11:26That's it.
- 11:27But don't worry about it.
- 11:29But they came off some
- 11:34American list, what let's call it hostile list, and that quite upbeat
- 11:41on Alibaba.
- 11:41And they jumped this morning as much.
- 11:44On one stage, they were up 12.5%.
- 11:46And that sort of dragged all the Chinese stocks along.
- 11:50And like I said, it just went from a perfect storm to a much better
- 11:56environment,
- 11:57to oversold to now getting some recovery.
- 12:00Nice little bounce back, yeah, from an oversold condition, as you say.
- 12:03We'll come to the gainers and losers on the JSC in a moment.
- 12:06But let me give you some prices.
- 12:07A dollar round.
- 12:09I think it's remarkably steady, actually.
- 12:13I think there's definitely money coming into.
- 12:15South Africa via the bond market and that is supporting the round.
- 12:18So we've got a dollar round at 16.45.
- 12:21Okay, it's weaker today.
- 12:22But as I say, the general picture for me is positive for the round at the moment.
- 12:26British pound against the round is 21.99.
- 12:28Euro round is 18.77.
- 12:30The euro dollar has been flirting either side of that 114 level all day.
- 12:35British pound against the US dollar I was 134 and a bit.
- 12:38Now then, what about...
- 12:41What about commodities?
- 12:42All important commodities.
- 12:43You mentioned the resources index.
- 12:44You'll give us that towards the end of the podcast.
- 12:47But gold is down 1.2% at 4,038 at the moment.
- 12:51The platinum price down nearly 5% to 1582.
- 12:56Palladium down even closer to 5%, 4.96% at $12.18 per
- 13:03ounce.
- 13:03So that's not good.
- 13:04Now the oil price as well.
- 13:05It's a massive, massive move in the last two days.
- 13:08It started yesterday with about a five and a quarter percent move for Brent.
- 13:11It's now up nearly eight percent, 7.82 percent at $79.96.
- 13:17That's big.
- 13:19West Texas $75.76, up 7.6 percent.
- 13:24Copper price down two and a half percent at the moment.
- 13:28So let's continue a bond yield.
- 13:30Predictably, the yield has risen.
- 13:32along with international bond yields they started yesterday, 8.515%.
- 13:38That's 15 basis points higher.
- 13:40The U.S.
- 13:4210-year was below 440 a week ago.
- 13:46It's now close to 460, 4.596 to be precise.
- 13:51And the 30-year has gone back through 5%.
- 13:55It's about 5.08 at the moment.
- 13:57S&P 500 futures, yeah, they're getting a little bit of stick.
- 14:01$74.91 for the September futures.
- 14:04That's down 0.8%.
- 14:06And what else have we got here?
- 14:08The Bitcoin price, of course, down 3.7% now, $61,570.
- 14:15Recent low just above $58,000.
- 14:17Looks as though it's going to retest that if this current mood continues.
- 14:22Okay, JSC now, please, Skulk, in the absence of lots of other news.
- 14:28What have you got on the ups and the downs?
- 14:30Let's start with Nesperson Process at the top.
- 14:32Give us the closing prices, please.
- 14:34So, yeah, you asked for the tops.
- 14:37You don't need to look any further if you've got a market that and I'm actually
- 14:41counting on the old share stocks, and
- 14:44given there's not too many anymore.
- 14:47It's 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12.
- 14:50Only 12 stocks positive today.
- 14:53So that's giving you an idea that the markets Not really that positive.
- 14:57So I think.
- 14:58You know, reading the top five for today, that's pretty much all the top fives.
- 15:02But NASPAS today, 4.73% processed, 4.23% up.
- 15:07And then, no surprise, Sasol back in action, 4.12% up.
- 15:13Grinrod, 3.16%.
- 15:15And Metair, 2.56%.
- 15:17On the losers' side, that is a little bit more excessive.
- 15:21We had Northern Platinum down 7%.
- 15:24Harmony down 6.13%.
- 15:26Impala Platinum.
- 15:28down 6.1%.
- 15:30Pan-African Resources down 5.5%.
- 15:33And Volterra, 5.2%.
- 15:36So clearly, the diggers not having the best days.
- 15:40No, really, really bad.
- 15:41When the diggers are struggling, I struggle to be upbeat.
- 15:44So maybe some buying opportunity there.
- 15:47Okay.
- 15:48In the old days, of course, the NASPERS and process moves of, you know, around
- 15:51about 5% and 4% would have meant that the
- 15:55JSC's all-share index would have been rocketing because...
- 15:58Those two stocks had a much bigger influence on the index because of their
- 16:02weighting in it.
- 16:03But not so anymore.
- 16:04It's the diggers that hold sway.
- 16:06And when the diggers are down, which they are today, it means that the indices are
- 16:09down.
- 16:10Can you start with the really bad one, the resources index, please, Skunk?
- 16:13Yeah, that's a tough one.
- 16:143.8% down today.
- 16:17And then property.
- 16:18It's a property where the second worst performing main sector.
- 16:22That was down 2.4%.
- 16:25Financials down just over 2%.
- 16:28Then we had the industrials keeping just in a positive territory, thanks to
- 16:35NASPA's process that was up 8 basis points.
- 16:38And we look at the JSE All Share that closed the day at 108,349 points.
- 16:43That's down 1.8%, with the JSE Top 40 also trading down 1.8% for today.
- 16:51Very good, Skalk.
- 16:53Two things now outside of markets.
- 16:54Firstly, how's the golf going?
- 16:57Um, it's going.
- 17:01It's that time where you realize that you're rubbish.
- 17:06Yeah, that's it.
- 17:07That's it.
- 17:07You got it.
- 17:10I'm rubbish.
- 17:12But are you enjoying being rubbish?
- 17:14I mean, do you enjoy going out there?
- 17:16And for the nine balls that you hit badly, the 10th, you hit sweetly and you get that
- 17:21lovely feeling?
- 17:22Or is it just, oh my goodness, why am I playing this game?
- 17:25Tell me more, please.
- 17:27No, I can understand.
- 17:29I watched a clip this week of Alice Cooper.
- 17:36Oh, yes.
- 17:38I saw the same thing.
- 17:38Yes.
- 17:39How crazy is this?
- 17:39Who would have thought that Alice Cooper is such an unbelievable, I mean, 71 years
- 17:44old.
- 17:45And this specific clip, he was being interviewed playing his best run of golf
- 17:50ever.
- 17:51He played a 65.
- 17:52That's something like two under par.
- 17:56And then I asked him, you know, what's the thing about golf?
- 18:00And he says, well, he plays six days a week.
- 18:02It's a drug.
- 18:03He went from being really sex, drugs, and rock and roll.
- 18:06I mean, he went from being an addict.
- 18:09I mean, he was so down the bottle and drugs that it was crazy.
- 18:15It was pretty much taking his life.
- 18:17And then he got clean, and he took up, as his own words, he took up another drug,
- 18:22namely golf.
- 18:23He says, and it's a much.
- 18:25Much worse drug.
- 18:26And I look at Alice Cooper when I say that.
- 18:29There's no such thing as a bad dandle golf course.
- 18:32It's just, ah, it's fun.
- 18:34Even playing is rubbish as hell.
- 18:36The interview I saw was different, and I'll read you the transcript from it, a
- 18:41short transcript.
- 18:42Rock musician Alice Cooper once famously hinted that Donald Trump is a golf cheat,
- 18:47famously stating that in a
- 18:492012 interview.
- 18:51And this is what he said.
- 18:52The worst celebrity golf cheat?
- 18:54I wish I could tell you.
- 18:56It would be a shocker.
- 18:57I played golf with Donald Trump one time.
- 18:59That's all I'm going to say.
- 19:02And we've heard that so many times with other people.
- 19:05Donald Trump cheats in everything, including golf.
- 19:08I mean, for goodness sake.
- 19:09Anyway, my story outside of the markets is very much linked to my little diatribe at
- 19:14the beginning of the podcast.
- 19:16I was chatting to somebody today and I told him about the flights over at
- 19:20Dockham.
- 19:21He said, oh, you should go to this particular place.
- 19:23It showed it to me.
- 19:24on his phone and there's a sort of a viewing area where we're plane spotting
- 19:28nerds real geeks go and they park their
- 19:31car and they walk up and they sit there with their headphones on and their
- 19:34earplugs in and everything because it's so loud and you can watch these things take
- 19:38off and land so i'm doing that tomorrow eight o'clock skulk i mean how nerdy is
- 19:42that
- 19:45you're a golfer i'm a plane spotter what have we come to what yo what happened man
- 19:51Anyway, on that very sad note, thank you very much for your time as always.
