- 1:32to get into today's episode. This one is another one of those rehearsal recordings
- 1:37with no music, but here is Professor Allenby murdered anything, Elizabeth Rodgers.
- 1:42Here's something that's a keg. I know from the alumni secretary at the university.
- 1:47He suggests you come visit a few days. Every time I go up
- 1:51there, I'm tapped for part of a new baseball diamond or a stained glass
- 1:53window in the chapel. You never seem to mind this a keg. It's
- 1:57worth it to talk with some of my old professor again. At least you'd
- 2:00be away from murders in time. Maybe so. I can't think of any
- 2:06reason why a killer would pick a town that small or a campus that quiet.
- 2:09But you never know. You never know when you may be called upon
- 2:14to testify to an act of violence in what you have become involved quite innocently,
- 2:19even now, somewhere in that small town, perhaps at the college,
- 2:23there may be a crime in the making. So will that phone ever stop
- 2:31ringing so we can get on with this Doctor Allenby. No, no,
- 2:39I have no comment. I told you newspaper people before. I have nothing
- 2:45further to say about my discovery. No, no, I told you I
- 2:50have nothing to say. Goodbye. Hello, Hello, Is this a desk,
- 2:57missus Crowe? If anyone else calls, tell them I've left the faculty
- 3:00club. I can't be reached. Thank you. Now back to my speech,
- 3:05Babow, I was summarizing. I believe let's start the recording that you
- 3:08have just compared Kalara Temple with other important discoveries when I stopped the machine.
- 3:15These recordings on tape are certainly perfect, and my discovery of Kolara Temple will
- 3:23at last prove my theory, namely that the Mayan people came from the Orient
- 3:29through what we now know as Alaska down the Pacific coast into Mexico and Yucatan.
- 3:35Further, and equally important, our findings will disprove much of the air
- 3:40or invention and deliberate pretacy created by that prolific offer of journey to the Hidden
- 3:49Valley and the Golden Serpent. I am sure you can all identify the master
- 3:55of misinformation to whom I refer. That was a very pointed Bob and mister
- 4:00Weimer, that was my intention. Barlo Weimer's a fraud, a disgrace to
- 4:05anthropology. Yes, why doesn't the machine go on? But the tape is
- 4:10still running. The pause is when you've stopped for a glass of water.
- 4:15Oh yes, yes, sir, I did. I didn't lose their attention
- 4:17either. You can't blame them, As you said, the greatest discovery since
- 4:23King Tut's tomb was opened in nineteen twenty two. By now, I am
- 4:29sure you are wondering about my future plans for excavation. I will lead an
- 4:33expedition to the interior of Yucatan as soon as possible. We will return with
- 4:39a golden treasure that will beggar the dreams of Spanish conquistadors. Thank you for
- 4:47your attention, exceptional paper doctor Elleny. Yes, yes, Barlow. Nice
- 5:00of you to record it for me. I was glad to do it.
- 5:02Good of you to feel that way. What's wrong with the machine When the
- 5:08tape runs out, it always sounds like this. There's no excuse for that
- 5:13confounded noise. There we are, Yes, well, thank you, Thank
- 5:17you again. I made a copy of your speech, Doctor, What would
- 5:20I do with it? I have no machine to play it on. I
- 5:23mean a transcript, a typewritten copy. Well, tell someone else to bother
- 5:29me and never mind the copy, Barlow, I am coming. Wait a
- 5:33minute, who is it telling me? Yes, message for you, Hi,
- 5:41Doc Rocky is the naming Rocky Man. Like I told you on the
- 5:45phone. You said you had a message hits from me. Doc. This
- 5:48faculty club is private. How did you get in here through the front door?
- 5:53Tipped my hat and slip the bouncer of five the idea I'll help you,
- 5:57laxed. Do take it easy. I think I can do, Doctor
- 6:00Alleny, stay here, Ballow. I want you to hear every word of
- 6:03this conversation. Now, Martin, say what you have to say and get
- 6:08out. Okay, Doc, I see here in the paper you found yourself
- 6:13some antique that's loaded with pots and pans made out of goal. Come to
- 6:16the point. I know guys who would finance a trip that you could tell
- 6:20if they could get their hands on a piece of solid gold treasure. Nah,
- 6:26you know where the stuff is. I know who'll back the trip.
- 6:30This is preposterous. He's suggesting that you turn over the treasure Canora to hoodlums.
- 6:35Get out. We fenced the stuff for you and give your cut.
- 6:40Will you leave my room? I well, not through talking. I believe
- 6:44I can end the conversation. Hand me the phone, Ballow. Give it
- 6:47at your part. That's better. It says here in the paper you've got
- 6:54a map of the place, Doc, Well, maybe that'll do. I'll
- 6:58ask my business partners and i'll check back with you later. Take it over,
- 7:02So long, Doctor Allen Bay telephone the police, tell them to arrest
- 7:10that man. No, no, this is ridiculous. I'll simply tell the
- 7:15dorm and I refuse to see him again. How did he know about my
- 7:19speech anyway? The newspaper, I men, she did say that. Let
- 7:25me see the paper. I'll go on to my room now, Fla,
- 7:30you stupid. You did this my entire speech, word for word, you
- 7:35and that infernal recording machine. At no time did you mention that the report
- 7:42was confidential. I've been charitable with you, Ball, I've overlooked your incompetence
- 7:46as my assistant and your jealousy, knowing full well you're a fool, a
- 7:51clumsy student, and a worse teacher. No, by heaven, nil,
- 7:57why malor I would thrash the brilliant doctor avnby get out of here, Wimer.
- 8:05I read your speech, Doctor. It was never supposed to be credited.
- 8:09So these things you say behind my back, stay away from me.
- 8:11You call my work errors, inventions, deliberate fantasy. You dare speak of
- 8:16me in this manner. You are a frauden. For twenty five years,
- 8:20while you spade from your campus, read your books and showed off before your
- 8:22students, I lived in jungles and your fever fuck with the native studied and
- 8:26wrote. Now you tell me I'm a fraud, you who found the temple
- 8:31of Calara after you read my report telling approximately where the center of myan culture
- 8:35was, look at it. That's a lie. Did you read mister Wymer's
- 8:39report? Doctor Allenby, get out, get out, follow me all I
- 8:43go. What I'll never forgive you, I'll repay you when the time life.
- 8:56I'm a liar and the fool good evening the deak. Please, mister
- 9:07Panford, do you have a gotten Wimer registered Weimer? Oh? Yes,
- 9:11Room four or seven school. I'm ringing mister Weimer. Thank you. Doctor
- 9:18Allenby told cheat knock out. Two men are bothering him. Allenby's an old
- 9:22fuss budget I heard him talking to you, mister Panford. How did I
- 9:26know he wouldn't want to see any reporters. His speech was in the paper.
- 9:30Only the man wasn't a reporter, he said he was. I'm sorry,
- 9:35there's no answer in four oh seven any message from mister Weimer. No,
- 9:39thank you, man said doctor Allenby was expecting him five dollars, and
- 9:46you were sure. I certainly can't blame doctor Allenby for good evening the death
- 9:54is that you missus kron Hello, Professor Ballow, I'm think taking a letter
- 9:58and I'm coming on the word I can't spell. Maybe one of us will
- 10:03know. Professor Barlowe can't spell a word. No, what is it?
- 10:07What's the word? Professor? You remember years ago they opened the tomb in
- 10:13the king's tomb in one of the pyramids, that they called him King Tut,
- 10:20King tut gug. That's all I remember. I'm sending this letter to
- 10:24another professor and quoting doctor Allenby. I just can't say king tut. The
- 10:31full name is tutung common, Oh, dear, he has to have a
- 10:35full name. It took done common challing to call the library. Mister Banford
- 10:41suggests you called the library. That's a very good idea. The number is
- 10:48a comment for nine two, oh, isn't it? Would you get it
- 10:50for me? Please? Just a minute, I'm ringing the library. Library,
- 11:01go ahead, lease, would you mind checking the spelling? I'm the
- 11:03name of Jean Tot of Egypt is pronounced to common. Oh, we're about
- 11:11ready to close, almost ten o'clock. I would appreciate it. Well,
- 11:18I'll have to go to the reference room and take me a few minutes.
- 11:22I don't find prey so'd yourself? Is he going to look it up for
- 11:26you? But yes, I told her i'd hold the live. I hope
- 11:30that will tie up. You'll switch poor missus cool. I'm not very busy.
- 11:33I could hold the call here bring you when she comes back. No,
- 11:37no, no trouble. I'll just go up and taking my letters,
- 11:41all right, provider mister Gravit Kenneth Harmon Andsner Publishers on twenty Park Avenue,
- 11:50New York. The bar. I hope by now you have looked over my
- 11:56lady's draft on the bank of script and find it what you imagine that Professor
- 12:03Barlow thought we could sell a two towns coming or whatever. It is one
- 12:07of the few around here that gies the help any credit. Most of them.
- 12:11You're just like just a minute, just a minute, young man.
- 12:15Where do you think you're going? I told you once to night pal,
- 12:18I've got business with doctor Allenby he told me to keep you away from his
- 12:22room. That's all. Now you get out of this building before I call
- 12:26a police. Okay, okay, lots of ways to skinner cap What does
- 12:31that mean? Skip it? Hooracious? See you raw? Did you see
- 12:39him the same man he tried to break in here again? That nerve for
- 12:43you today? Doctor Nallanby presented his people to the Other County Society and caused
- 12:50the dead. See you know how a hyran can build on the cloud.
- 12:56Well, Good evening the Death. This is Gordon Wymer Borrow seventh. I'm
- 13:05checking out in a few minutes. I want to my bill ready so I
- 13:07can pay with evening. Thank you, Yes, sorrow Seven's bill ready?
- 13:11He's checking out? Que how long should it take to look up a simple
- 13:22word in a reference book? Good Evening the Death. Hello, Hello,
- 13:31this is the Death. Hello Doctor Allenby. Oh, which by its pan?
- 13:39Something's wrong with Dr Allenby's line. Appreciating your cooperation, truly I can
- 13:48hear mister Barlow all right? Hello, Hello, and mister Barlow Hello,
- 13:54this is the library. Hello. Can you hear me going on that word?
- 14:05Hen with an over the youth? Thank you, thank you very much
- 14:13good time. What's wrong with this switch boy? Hello? Hello, doctor
- 14:20Allenby? What's Allenby? Mister Panford? Doctor Allenby doesn't answer his phone.
- 14:26It's off the hook. But I can't get him to answer that newspaper color.
- 14:31Maybe he got in the back way. Call a policeman's crow. I'm
- 14:33going upstair. Be careful, be careful, mister Panford. Go on,
- 14:41mister Panford. Doctor Ellenby was lying at the table, face down, arms
- 14:46outstretched, with a dagger in his back. His telephone was lying on the
- 14:50floor beside him. When did the police arrive a few moments later? Thank
- 14:54you, mister Panford. That'll be all corner corner Roman, Yes, yes,
- 15:01what is it you want? My name is Jonathan Kay. I am
- 15:05an alumnus of the university, and I have many friends here. I'd like
- 15:09to offer my services in what capacity. I often serve as a meekest curii
- 15:13in cases of this kind as Oh yes, yes, of course, I
- 15:18believe I recall your name, Athan Kay. That will certainly pull up a
- 15:22chair. Thank you, Quiet, quiet, everybody. This gentleman is mister
- 15:30Kay. He has a national reputation for serving as an amicus curii, a
- 15:35friend of the court. He's kindly offered to help me in this inquest.
- 15:39Understand now he represents no one, simply uses expert knowledge and experience and his
- 15:46ability to cross examine to get at the truth. Anything more, mister Pig,
- 15:50I believe that covers it. You go right ahead a call Rocky Martin.
- 15:54I am not satisfied with some of his answers. Mister Martin, will
- 15:58you return to the stand. Will you tell us again what you did after
- 16:03you were ordered to leave the faculty club the first time or the second time?
- 16:07The second time, I'd drive for the nurse place it's open, buy
- 16:11a cup of coffee, and try to figure out what to do next.
- 16:15Maybe I call my partners and tell him I'm getting the brush off. Maybe
- 16:18I forget the whole thing. Can you prove you were in a cafe at
- 16:22the time doctor Allenby was killed. One of the girls on the counter might
- 16:26remember me. I gave her a little routine, she says, get lost.
- 16:30We'll check on that. Will you tell us why you who came to
- 16:33the campus to see doctor Allenby? I stopped them down for a hamburger.
- 16:38I see in the paper about a professor in those, but to lay hands
- 16:41on buried pleasure, and being a small boy in hid, I figure it'd
- 16:45be good to pick up the dock and go digging. I call long distance
- 16:51a few other guys who say they'll bankroll the trip if the doc guarantees a
- 16:55payoff. What next is logical? I'd go see the doc and he refuses
- 17:02to cooperate. He is insulting. It calls me a hoodlum. Free So
- 17:07you threatened to return and take the map that shows where the treasure is located.
- 17:11I say, maybe the map will Though Chief of Police North Carters testified
- 17:15the doctor Allenby telephoned and said you threatened to take the map. He asked
- 17:19for police protection. Maybe the doc was upset. Ask the little guy over
- 17:23there, mister Barlow, he heard what I told Allenby. Why did you
- 17:27try to see doctor Allenby again? Give him a little time and people change
- 17:33their mind. You know what was his answer? Like I say, I
- 17:37never popped the question. I never got upstairs. That will be all next,
- 17:41please, Professor John Barlow. Professor Barlow, mister Martin says you were
- 17:47present when he talked to doctor Allenby. I was what happened at that meeting,
- 17:52mister Martin entered the room as I was about to leave. He presented
- 17:56his proposition to doctor Amandy, who they refused to be a party to it.
- 18:02Mister Martin mentioned something about the map and said he intended to return.
- 18:07Was his manner threatening? He's a large man. He resented doctor Allenby's refusal
- 18:15to cooperate. Was doctor allenby concern? He said, it was ridiculous.
- 18:21When did you leave doctor Allenby's room after mister Wimer came to see him?
- 18:26Mister Weimer, yes, a professor from another university. Did he threaten doctor
- 18:32Allenby? He said he would never forgive doctor Allenby and would repay him when
- 18:37the time was right. And when did you leave doctor Allenby? Nine thirty
- 18:45or so? I was flustered? You see, I had displeased him by
- 18:48giving a copy of his speech to the newspapers. Did you argue Doctor Allenby
- 18:55had a violent temper, but I have weathered his toms for over twenty five
- 19:00years. You left his room and went to your own. Yes, I
- 19:03had some letters to Dickie. You stayed in your room, Yes, you
- 19:08were on the same floor near Allenby's room, Yes, a few doors away.
- 19:14You heard no unusual sounds, no loud conversation. No, I really
- 19:21can't remember. Thank you. That'll be all. Mister Gordon Wimer. Please,
- 19:27mister Weimer, you were in doctor Allenby's room on the night he was
- 19:32murdered, and you threatened him. That is correct. Why did you go
- 19:36there? I was called a master of misinformation? Then you had a case
- 19:41for libel. I had every motive for murder. Where were you when Allenby
- 19:45was murdered in my room? Becky? Was your room on the same floor
- 19:48as doctor Allenby's. I refuse to answer. I would do anything in my
- 19:52power to keep his justified executioner from big captured. Quiet quiet, please,
- 20:02Coroner Brohman, I would like to request a recess until tomorrow morning. At
- 20:06that time, I would like to cross examine an innocent bystander to the Allenby
- 20:10murder. In compliance with mister Keig's request. This coroner's jury is now a
- 20:14journ and we'll meet again tomorrow morning at ten o'clock. Do you recognize the
- 20:32three men seated directly in front of you. I do. There's Professor Barlow
- 20:37and the next His name is Martin, Rocky Martin, I believe, and
- 20:41that's mister Weimer. And the night of the murder, mister Weimer asked for
- 20:47his bill and tried to leave as the police came. He resented being detained.
- 20:52When he heard what had happened, he started to cheer. I believe.
- 20:56Mister Wimer called you earlier in the evening, a few minutes before doctor
- 21:00Allen Pavid murdered. He said he was leaving. I was surprised he was
- 21:03in his room because I had rung a little while before. There was no
- 21:07answer the first time this, mister Martin, Are you sure he left the
- 21:12building? He walked towards the door. That's all I saw, Coroner Braughman.
- 21:17Doctor Allenby was murdered a few minutes before ten o'clock. At that time,
- 21:21mister Wimer did not answer the telephone in the room where he said he
- 21:23was packing. Also, the police report the waitress at the cafe does not
- 21:29remember mister Martin. Now, missus Croll, there were other calls. Will
- 21:36you tell us about the professor Barlow call? Yes, he couldn't spell a
- 21:41word. That king from Egypt king chucked. He needed the full name,
- 21:45and the library checked it up for him. Professor Barlow called the library,
- 21:48waited while someone found the spelling of tutakamon. He asked us first, mister
- 21:53Panford suggested the library. You looked up the number and no. Professor Barlow
- 21:59head it handy. What time was this? A little before ten? He
- 22:03was still waiting on the phone when doctor Allenby's light flashed. This testimony definitely
- 22:07establishes the presence of Professor Barlow in his own room at the time of the
- 22:11murder. Now, I want you to remember each sound you heard on the
- 22:17switchboard, Say, one minute before the call from doctor Allenby's room, mister
- 22:22Bimacow, a minute before Allenby's phone fell to the floor. Yes, what
- 22:26was his room? Number? Four oh seven? Go on. Professor Barlow
- 22:30was still dictating his letters while he waited for the librarian. Yeah. Then
- 22:37doctor Allenby's light went on, and I answered, but I couldn't hear anything.
- 22:42I thought the switchboard was broken again. What did you do? I
- 22:45kept saying, hello, anything else? I opened the key. I could
- 22:49still hear Professor Barlow. Then the librarian told him how to spell the word,
- 22:55and the professor thanked her and hung up. Nothing else no other sound.
- 23:00That switchboard makes funny sound. In a while, I did hear it
- 23:04sound like applause, people clapping, like applause, people clapping. Since the
- 23:11time we talked last night, Missus Crow, I have had a chance to
- 23:14record on this tape machine a crowd applauding. Will you kindly listen and see
- 23:18if this is what you've heard? No, no, that's not right.
- 23:27It was lighter further away. I don't exactly know how to tell it to
- 23:32you as what's that? Nothing to be alarmed about. The tape has run
- 23:37off this role. The end is flapping against the machine. No, don't
- 23:40hit it off. That's it. That's what I heard. Thank you,
- 23:42missus Crow. That will be all. Mister Barlowe, you have a tape
- 23:48machine. I dictate all my letters, As Missus Cow told you, I
- 23:52was doing my letters when I was waiting for the library. I'm glad you
- 23:56finally remember you're called the library, Professor Barlow. Yes, of course,
- 24:02now that it was mentioned, corner Browman, the testimony of our innocent bystander
- 24:06Lottie Crowe can be interpreted in only one way. Professor John Barlow killed his
- 24:11friend doctor allenby a man of your standing should be careful about accusing people.
- 24:19Mister Kig, doctor Allenby and By were hated enemies, mostly because he never
- 24:25noticed you. I was his assist and had taken his abuse for twenty five
- 24:30years. You saw two other men who might be blamed for his death.
- 24:33You did what you wanted to do for a long long time. I was
- 24:37in my room. It was very simple. You needed three minutes to walk
- 24:41down the hall, pick up a dagger doctor Allenby kept on his desk,
- 24:45and kill him and return. You knew Missus Crowe and mister Panford would be
- 24:48flattered. And remember that you asked for a spelling You knew the library would
- 24:52take at least three minutes to find the answer, and mister Panford they Professor
- 24:57Barlowe had the phone number at his elbow. He would have had the idea
- 25:00himself if mister Panford were not resourceful. I see nothing to deny. You
- 25:07have no proof. You knew every switchboard operator checks long calls to see if
- 25:11the parties are still talking. And so you were heard talking dictating letters tape
- 25:17recorded hours before you heard the tape recorder Missus Crowe, while Professor barlow was
- 25:22down the hall, murdering his friend. He didn't get back in time.
- 25:26There was an unexpected struggle. Doctor Allenby's telephone fell to the floor. Barlow
- 25:30hurried, but the tape had run out and was flapping against the machine.
- 25:33He picked up his telephone, talked to the librarian and hung up. I
- 25:37deny, how do you spell trudoc commons U t A N kham with an
- 25:44um lot over the you. That is right, professor, And you learned
- 25:47that spelling years ago. No archaeologist or anthropologist in the world would miss it.
- 25:52I hated him. He would shame I would, he said, I
- 26:00would stupid, not even the good teacher Carner Browman. I recommend that you
- 26:06instruct this jury to find that William allen Babe died at the hands of his
- 26:10assistant in the anthropology department, Professor John Barlowe, an anthropologist who couldn't spell
- 26:18King Tutt's full name. Was that what got you on the track, mister
- 26:21Kate? Well, if you remember that fact was not mentioned until missus Crowe
- 26:25took the witness there, that's you right. The tip off was Professor Barlowe.
- 26:30He said he was the murdered man's friend. He was anxious to help
- 26:33find the killer. No trace of hate, and yet he admitted he had
- 26:37weathered twenty five years of Doctor Allenby's storms. If anyone is persecuted and held
- 26:42down long enough, hate bills and someday it flares out. I still think
- 26:48King Cutt had something to do with it. Professor Barlowe should have remembered the
- 26:51curses of death found in the tomb of Tutta Common. He might have asked
- 26:56the library how to spell a different form good night, welcome back. Well,
- 27:03this is probably my least favorite episode of A Life in your Hands so
- 27:07far, because really the solution was telegraphed and it's uh, you know,
- 27:19I saw it kind of from the beginning that what he was doing with the
- 27:22recording. Maybe I've just been listening to too many detective shows, but this
- 27:26one seemed just way too obvious and easy. So hopefully they'll step it up
- 27:32a notch for the last episode of the series. We'll play next week.
- 27:36Well, we turned to listener comments and feedback, and we received several emails
- 27:41from folks when we had an issue with one of the episodes not playing apologize
