- 0:00This is Scott Becker with the Becker's Healthcare
- 0:02podcast.
- 0:03Thrilled today to be joined by Molly Gamble.
- 0:06Molly's the extraordinary
- 0:07vice president of editorial affairs at Becker's Healthcare,
- 0:10and she joins us regularly to talk about
- 0:12what stories she's watching most closely in health
- 0:14care. Mala, can you take it away and
- 0:17tell us about a couple of the stories
- 0:18that you're watching closely currently?
- 0:20Absolutely. Thank you so much, Scott. It's good
- 0:21to be back with you. I've got three
- 0:24diverse headlines out of our newsroom just this
- 0:26week that I thought were pretty interesting, and
- 0:28there's stories behind the story. So I thought
- 0:29we could touch on those. But the first
- 0:31is this new oral GLP one and how
- 0:34the race just got a little bit more
- 0:36competitive this week. The FDA approved Eli Lilly's
- 0:39daily weight loss pill, Fundeo,
- 0:41making it only the second oral GLP one
- 0:44cleared for obesity in The US. That comes
- 0:46after Novo Nordisk got their pill approved back
- 0:49in December.
- 0:50And what makes this approval a little bit
- 0:52more interesting is that it it cleared the
- 0:54FDA in just under fifty days after Eli
- 0:56Lilly submitted its application.
- 0:59It's the fifth approval under this new program,
- 1:01this new pilot, the commissioner's national priority voucher
- 1:04program,
- 1:05that launched in June. So FOUNDEO, if you
- 1:07take a step back,
- 1:09second oral GLP one now on the market
- 1:11in The US, but also the fastest approval
- 1:14for a new molecular
- 1:15drug since 2002.
- 1:17This is gonna go live
- 1:19on Lilly's direct to consumer site, $1.49
- 1:21a month,
- 1:23for the starting dose before rolling out to
- 1:25retail pharmacies and other telehealth platforms. And Eli
- 1:28Lilly is looking into this drug and investigating
- 1:30it for type two diabetes, sleep apnea, hypertension,
- 1:33and other conditions too, Scott.
- 1:35But but that's amazing at $1.50 a month.
- 1:37That's amazing. I mean, that's game changing, isn't
- 1:39it? Yeah. When you and I were speaking
- 1:41about GLP ones, you know, a year and
- 1:43a half ago, like, this was not on
- 1:45the table.
- 1:46So it it's interesting to see even now
- 1:48the oral
- 1:50options available. Now there's a, you know, a
- 1:52two horse race for oral
- 1:54GLP ones that just got more competitive this
- 1:56week. So, this competition seems to be a
- 1:59a really good thing for consumers, so we'll
- 2:00see how this continues to play out.
- 2:03That that's amazing. That's literally fantastic, and I
- 2:06love to see the FDA moving more quickly.
- 2:08That's fantastic too.
- 2:11Great. And let's hope it goes well and
- 2:13people do well with the oral GLP one
- 2:15drug and and so forth. Tell us what
- 2:17else you're watching closely because that that that
- 2:19GLP one at $1.50 a month and people
- 2:21paying $3.05, 600 for the ZepBalance, the other
- 2:25the other shots.
- 2:27You you bring this down to $15,200 a
- 2:28month, it starts to be more it starts
- 2:30to be the same cost as a a
- 2:32nice gym membership for a lot of people
- 2:33and and, and and and probably equally effective
- 2:36or part of their part of their health
- 2:38routine. That's fantastic.
- 2:40Yeah. And I should mention, Scott, that that's
- 2:42the direct to consumer option. So it's it
- 2:44starts at $25
- 2:46per month for those with commercial cup health
- 2:48insurance
- 2:49and then $1.49 for self pay.
- 2:52So,
- 2:53again, this was not an option for people
- 2:55when we talked about GLP ones not too
- 2:57long ago, but I think when it comes
- 2:58to direct to consumer access,
- 3:01free home delivery, and then those price points,
- 3:03it's it's moving in a in a it
- 3:05has some serious momentum for how people are
- 3:07able to access this drug.
- 3:09A 100%. That's fascinating. And and tell us
- 3:12what else are you watching currently now? Yeah.
- 3:14The Cleveland Clinic London is is shifting around
- 3:16some leadership. This is, Cleveland Clinic London, it
- 3:19its campus open in 2022
- 3:22across the pond. It'll be sending one of
- 3:24its senior most leaders to,
- 3:26the London site. This is gonna be Barry
- 3:28Ridgeway, doctor Barry Ridgeway.
- 3:31She's a long time clinic leader. Doctor Ridgeway,
- 3:33she's been there for nearly two decades. She
- 3:35trained at UCSF, UC San Diego, completed her
- 3:38fellowship at Cleveland Clinic, and then has led
- 3:39the system's
- 3:40OBGYN
- 3:41Institute and global access initiatives.
- 3:43So really an insider's insider.
- 3:46The outgoing London president, doctor Rob Lorenz, he's
- 3:49gonna move into a new role managing Cleveland
- 3:51Clinic's relationship
- 3:52with the Ellison Institute of Technology Oxford. So
- 3:55staying in that UK orbit,
- 3:57and then back home in Cleveland, the search
- 3:59for a new enterprise chief of staff kicks
- 4:01off immediately.
- 4:03So, Scott, I just wanted to note this
- 4:04development. Cleveland Clinic London has has really, in
- 4:06a short time, established itself as a a
- 4:09top tier private hospital in The UK, and
- 4:11tapping
- 4:12a a leader of doctor Ridgeway's caliber signals
- 4:14the system is really doubling down on that
- 4:16market. Also interesting that its outgoing leader isn't,
- 4:19you know, returning to The US necessarily or
- 4:22leaving Cleveland Clinic, but will be really more
- 4:25tightly managing this relationship with Oxford. So something
- 4:28to note, and I think we're always interested
- 4:30in how these global
- 4:31footprints of domestic health systems are maturing and
- 4:35developing, and this this leadership change, is worth
- 4:38noting.
- 4:39No. Fantastic and fascinating. And we we look
- 4:42up to Cleveland Clinic and what they do
- 4:43and fasting to see the changes there. So
- 4:45it's sort of fasting to see some real
- 4:47turnover at Cleveland Clinic London and also to
- 4:50see this oral GLP one thing come out
- 4:52and really start to move. That's gonna be
- 4:54fascinating. That's as you start to get down
- 4:55to a 100 to $200 a month, this
- 4:58starts to become game changers in terms of
- 4:59the availability
- 5:00to a lot more people and and a
- 5:02real positive from,
- 5:03you know, I still I know it's still
- 5:04quite expensive, but getting closer and closer to
- 5:06making sense from a health equity perspective that
- 5:09this becomes widely available, not just to people
- 5:11that are wealthier and can afford it. That's,
- 5:13I think fantastic.
- 5:14Mhmm. Completely agree. And I'm also interested in,
- 5:17like, what we'll see those investigations will bear
- 5:19out when it comes to those other health
- 5:21needs and and perhaps other conditions that could
- 5:23be
- 5:24effective for. The last thing I'll note is
- 5:26just hospital deals. We continue to see some
- 5:28some lumpy activity here, I would say. You
- 5:30know, we saw CHS
- 5:32this week complete a a a bigger sale,
- 5:34a 180
- 5:35bed hospital offloaded
- 5:37to Huntsville Hospital health system, a more local
- 5:40health system that now has 15 hospitals in
- 5:42Alabama.
- 5:43That was a $459,000,000
- 5:45deal.
- 5:46CHS, this is not unusual. The system has
- 5:49been for for years now really trimming down
- 5:51its hospital count, and
- 5:53reconfiguring its portfolio.
- 5:56But as much as you've seen CHS and
- 5:59investor owned system offloading, others are are buying
- 6:01up. LifePoint Health has agreed to acquire
- 6:04eight hospitals from Scion Health. Those are in
- 6:06Mississippi, Texas, Tennessee,
- 6:08West Virginia, Idaho, Wisconsin. So really a diverse
- 6:11area. And then, back in February, Prime Health
- 6:15Care looked to it it acquired Lewistown
- 6:17based Central Maine Health Care. So taken together,
- 6:20just some interesting activity, Scott. You've got some
- 6:23of the big investor owned national systems like
- 6:25CHS continuing to restructure and even nonprofits like
- 6:28Ascension trying to offload acute care hospitals
- 6:32while other operators, LifePoint Prime, even local systems
- 6:35like Huntsville are are stepping in to to
- 6:37scoop those up and expand. So I just
- 6:38wanna make note of that deal that went
- 6:40through today. It was a a bigger price
- 6:42point than some of the others we report
- 6:43on at an individual level as of late.
- 6:46Yeah. Fantastic. No. Fascinating to see and fascinating
- 6:49to see how community health systems has reshaped
- 6:51itself, what Prime Healthcare is doing, and all
- 6:52these other systems are doing. Really, really remarkable.
- 6:55Molly, as always, thank you so much for
- 6:57joining us on the Bechtris Healthcare podcast. Remarkable
- 7:00leadership. Can't wait to visit with you on
- 7:01our CEO advisory call next week. Thank you
- 7:03so much for joining us. Thank you so
- 7:05much, Scott.
