- 0:03This is Living Waters of Grace, the teaching ministry of Clark
- 0:08Wofford, senior pastor of Calvary Chapel of Westmoreland,
- 0:12County of Greensburg, PA. Now here's Pastor Clark as he
- 0:16continues teaching through God's Word.
- 0:37So that's the message then in the book of the Acts.
- 0:39That's the message now today that God is commanding every
- 0:43human being on the face of the planet.
- 0:45They need to repent, change their mind, and see and believe
- 0:51in the truth, because He's appointed today in which He will
- 0:55judge the world and righteousness by the man whom
- 0:58he's ordained. And of course, that's Jesus
- 1:00Christ. When he comes back the second
- 1:03time, He's coming back as the judge.
- 1:05It feels like whenever we drive, there are warning signs
- 1:08everywhere alerting us of icy bridges, tight turns, and
- 1:12crossing traffic that doesn't stop.
- 1:15It may all seem a bit overwhelming, but Can you
- 1:17imagine what it would be like if those warning signs didn't
- 1:20exist? Pastor Clark reminds you today
- 1:23that God's Word contains a message of hope for humanity,
- 1:27but it also contains a warning. The Lord will one day judge all
- 1:30of humanity for its sin, and the only way to avoid his wrath is
- 1:34to repent and follow Jesus. Now here's Pastor Clark in the
- 1:39book of Acts Chapter 17 with today's edition of Living Waters
- 1:43of Grace. Silas and Timothy are hanging
- 1:46out in these places to help these new churches develop for a
- 1:49while. They'll eventually catch up with
- 1:51Paul, but Paul now is going on his own to Athens now.
- 1:55Athens, Greece back then as today, is a incredible city.
- 2:01It's a city of influence. It's a city of intellectualism.
- 2:06It's a city of philosophy. This is a place of Socrates and
- 2:11Plato, these philosophers, Aristotle.
- 2:15This is what caused people to think about a lot of things in
- 2:19life and whether they were true or false, they were their minds
- 2:23were stimulated by the the brilliant people that lived
- 2:26there. It was a city of idolatry.
- 2:28To this day, there's the Parthenon and the Acropolis and,
- 2:31and all these kind of places that you can go and actually see
- 2:34these buildings that have stood the test of time throughout the
- 2:37centuries of history of some idol and almost every street
- 2:41corner, but a memorial to some God or goddess who at one time
- 2:46that the people were influenced to worship Pagan idolatry.
- 2:50And so Paul, he's, he's here in Athens now.
- 2:53Verse 16. Now while Paul waited for them
- 2:55at Athens, his spirit was provoked within him when he saw
- 2:59that the city was given over to idols.
- 3:02So he's there like a Taurus maybe initially, but he knows
- 3:06why he's really there. He's fascinated by what he sees
- 3:09because like, I can't believe that these people are so deluded
- 3:16into worshipping all these false gods.
- 3:20These beautiful buildings they've built, they're void of
- 3:25truth. They're void of God.
- 3:27There's no evidence of Christ anywhere here.
- 3:30He sees and he saw that the city was given over to idols.
- 3:33That broke his heart. He wasn't judging them.
- 3:36He was like these people are messed up and they need to hear
- 3:39the truth. Therefore, verse 17, he reasoned
- 3:43in the synagogue with the Jews and with the Gentile
- 3:46worshippers. So again he has this privilege
- 3:50and this opportunity to go into the synagogue and get some
- 3:55things going. He also has this opportunity to
- 4:01deal with the Gentile worshippers.
- 4:03So you had Jews and Gentiles in the synagogue and and it says he
- 4:06didn't end there. And then the marketplace daily
- 4:09with those who happen to be there.
- 4:12That's interesting. St.
- 4:13Ministry, how do you do that Nowadays?
- 4:16Anytime I see St. Ministry, it's never real
- 4:19attractive because it's some wacko out there with signs
- 4:21saying God hates fags or he hates this and you're all going
- 4:25to hell. And it's not like endearing.
- 4:27I go to State College lots of times on business, and there's
- 4:30the Willard preacher there who's very gracious and how he stands
- 4:34outside the science building and tries a dialogue with people
- 4:38about spirituality and that kind of stuff to build a bridge to be
- 4:42able to have a conversation with someone who's reasoning out of
- 4:44philosophy versus the truth of the gospel.
- 4:48But sometimes you'll see people out there screaming with a
- 4:51microphone telling all the Penn State students that they're on
- 4:54their way to hell. You know, that's not the way.
- 4:57I think you start with the communication of the gospel.
- 5:01I think you best start with God's love, because that's what
- 5:07softens the heart. A God who's going to send me to
- 5:11hell. I don't want to even know who he
- 5:12is, right? Because I don't even think he
- 5:14loves me. And when you tell people first
- 5:17about the love of God and what he did for them, then all of a
- 5:20sudden the message of the need for repentance to be saved from
- 5:24hell begins to sink in and make good common sense.
- 5:28So as they're preaching here, these other philosophers, verse
- 5:3118, certain Epicurean and Stoic philosophers encountered him.
- 5:35Some said, what does this babbler want to say?
- 5:38The Epicureans were developed about 300 years before this
- 5:43incident took place. They were the people that
- 5:46believed in the good life, the best wine, the best food, the
- 5:49best entertainment, the best buildings and property, the
- 5:54ability to have, you know, the best sensuality or whatever sin
- 5:59they might be able to experience in their flesh and their body.
- 6:04It was all reasoned on. This is how we're to live and
- 6:07enjoy all this good stuff. They didn't want to deal with
- 6:10any negativity, nothing. It was painful.
- 6:12Anything that had to do with suffering.
- 6:14Their whole focus was your best life now, right?
- 6:19You know someone that proclaims that the best life now that's
- 6:22Epicureanism multi $1,000,000 mansion, expensive jets, the
- 6:27best clothing, one of the most influential churches in our
- 6:31country today. And it's all rooted in Epicurean
- 6:35spirituality. It's it's sad, it's tragic.
- 6:38And then the Stoics or the other group where they were like real
- 6:42hard nosed kind of people. They believed in this idea that
- 6:47God was in everything and good and bad and evil whatever, and
- 6:51different, and they didn't want to participate in life like
- 6:54these Epicurean kind of people. Both of these philosophies are
- 6:59very warped and distorted, but they had their followers at the
- 7:02time, and so they're calling Paul a babbler now in that
- 7:07community. At the time, this was known to
- 7:12discuss heady spirituality, new, new stuff.
- 7:20So when someone came into the community, they would go up on
- 7:23Mars Hill and they had the Agora marketplace on the bottom.
- 7:28And as you went up, there was these rocks these brains would
- 7:31sit on and they would talk until midnight, I'm sure about their
- 7:35philosophy of what they think truth is.
- 7:38And up on the top was a Parthenon.
- 7:41It was very influential in the in the wisdom of of Greek
- 7:45mythology, whatever. And so they're here to have a
- 7:51conversation with him, with Paul.
- 7:54Others said this is about Paul. He seems to be a proclaimer of
- 7:57foreign gods because he preached to them Jesus in the
- 8:00resurrection. They never heard anything like
- 8:02this before. And so they took him in verse 19
- 8:05and brought him to the Areopagus saying, may we know what this
- 8:09new doctrine is of which you speak for you're bringing some
- 8:13strange things to our ears. So they're, they're sort of
- 8:18inquisitive here. Therefore we want to know what
- 8:21these things mean for all the Athenians.
- 8:24Verse 21. And the foreigners who were
- 8:25there spent their time and nothing else but either to tell
- 8:29or to hear some new things. So this was a cool place to go
- 8:33to. You got an idea of philosophy, a
- 8:36new religion or called a false teaching.
- 8:39They're all weird. They want to hear what you have
- 8:41to say this because it fascinated him.
- 8:44So he goes up there and addresses them in verse 22.
- 8:47Then Paul stood in the midst of the Aeropagus and said, men of
- 8:51Athens, I perceive them on all things.
- 8:53You're very religious. So he starts with a compliment.
- 8:56He doesn't condemn them about their idolatry and put them all
- 8:59down. He's saying, like you guys seem
- 9:02to be involved in spiritual things, that in all things
- 9:07you're very religious. That probably puffed him up a
- 9:10little bit. Well, this guy's pretty cool.
- 9:11He thinks highly of us. Yeah, we, we got our act
- 9:14together here. For as I was passing through and
- 9:17considering the objects of your worship, I even found an altar
- 9:21with this inscription to the unknown God.
- 9:25Very intriguing way of dialoguing with people about
- 9:29their need of Christ. Try to find common ground with
- 9:34someone when you're talking with them to see if there's any
- 9:36ground that you can have to have a conversation about the gospel.
- 9:42If there's not a foundation of some kind of place of ground
- 9:44that you can communicate, you're not going to get too far with
- 9:47people. But if you're able to listen and
- 9:50think and ask God for wisdom to to get into their minds and
- 9:53their hearts a little bit, the Lord will show you how.
- 9:56And Paul is an ultimate specialist in this kind of
- 9:59communication. Of course, he's gifted and he's
- 10:01apostle and the Holy Spirit's in him and all through him and on
- 10:05upon him. But nonetheless, he says God who
- 10:08made the world and everything in it, since he is Lord of heaven
- 10:12and earth, does not dwell in temples made with hands.
- 10:15So right away, these people have these facilities, these
- 10:18structures that, you know, convey spiritual atmosphere.
- 10:22You go in and you can say, oh, this is so beautiful.
- 10:25The gold, the silver, the the artwork, whatever.
- 10:29This is like really special here, very majestical, whatever.
- 10:33And maybe that made them feel like there was some sense of a
- 10:37God that was in the building. And then Paul gradually begins
- 10:43to explain to them that this Lord of heaven, this Creator
- 10:47does not dwell in temples made with hands.
- 10:50Now, how many people in our culture today think that God's
- 10:54only in the in the house? We come here.
- 10:57This is where God is. When we leave, he's not here
- 10:59anymore. I mean, he's not with us
- 11:01anymore. He's at the house, nor is he
- 11:05worshiped with man's hands. So they make all this great
- 11:08stuff. And I'm not putting down, you
- 11:10know, artwork or beautiful structures and that kind of
- 11:13stuff. He's educating them here that
- 11:16that God, it doesn't get excited about everything you built or
- 11:20made or spent to give people this atmosphere of worship as
- 11:26though he needed anything. God doesn't need anything.
- 11:30We can be out on the hillside, we can be out in the
- 11:32countryside, we can be at the ocean, we can be in the woods,
- 11:35whatever. You can worship God really
- 11:38anywhere. If you know who God is, you're
- 11:39going to be able to worship anywhere.
- 11:41The benefit of the church is we get to worship God together,
- 11:45which were called not to forsake the assembling of ourselves
- 11:48together as a man or some, but exhort one another so much more
- 11:51as we see today approaching. So we get together and we
- 11:53encourage each other through the Word and worship and praise, but
- 11:57God doesn't need anything. We're providing for Him in the
- 12:01sense of our human ability. It's all what He's given to us.
- 12:07And so the most you can give God in a way that would honor Him is
- 12:11to be thankful and to follow the truth of His Word.
- 12:15It says He gives to all life, breath and all things.
- 12:20It's like you might want to underline that in your Bible.
- 12:22He gives to all life, breath and all things and he has made from
- 12:27one blood every nation of men to dwell on the face of the earth
- 12:30and it's determined to appointed times and the boundaries of
- 12:34their dwelling. So the sovereignty of God
- 12:38evidence in these scriptures. God created us from one blood.
- 12:43We're all descendants of Adam, every nation, doesn't matter
- 12:46what color of skin or what ethnic background or what
- 12:50culture people have been from. We all come from this one God,
- 12:55one blood, every nation of men to dwell on all the faces the
- 12:59earth. God knows the time that you and
- 13:01I have. He knows before we get here and
- 13:05He knows the time and when we're going to go.
- 13:08So he says in verse 27, so that they should seek the Lord and
- 13:12hope that they might grow for him and find him, though he is
- 13:16not far from each one of us. And that's the picture of of
- 13:20someone in darkness. It's, it's tragic.
- 13:23Where's the answer to life? I'm feeling here, I'm touching
- 13:28this, I'm experiencing that, I'm trying this.
- 13:31I still can't find an answer. People grope.
- 13:35People groped all day long, all night long, bottles of alcohol
- 13:39by the bed. They're trying to find an answer
- 13:41to life. They're depressed.
- 13:42People take their lives because they're groping.
- 13:45They can't find the truth. Jesus is the truth, He's the
- 13:52way, He's a life, and the only way they're going to know is by
- 13:55you and I and people like Paul and Silas and Timothy telling
- 13:58these people the gospel so they don't have to grope anymore.
- 14:03They can find the Lord because faith comes by hearing and
- 14:07hearing by the word of God. For in him we live, move, and
- 14:12have our being. Boy, that's a beautiful truth
- 14:15and insight, as also some of your poets have said.
- 14:19So Paul uses poetry and he gives this insight that you can read
- 14:24poetry and and the Holy Spirit can use poetry.
- 14:27If some of you saw the movie, I heard the bells on Christmas
- 14:30Day. Anybody see that movie?
- 14:32If you haven't, I challenge you to see.
- 14:33It's the history of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, one of the
- 14:38premier leaders in the civil rights movement for freedom of
- 14:42slavery back in the Civil War days.
- 14:44Passionate man for the word of God and the truth of God and the
- 14:47gospel of Jesus Christ. And he wrote poetry, went
- 14:51through terrible tragedy in his life.
- 14:53And I'm not going to give the movie away.
- 14:55You can do. I knew nothing about Longfellow
- 14:57other than the name I heard in school one time.
- 15:00No one ever told me how this guy was and how he lived his life.
- 15:04Remarkable, remarkable man. But anyway, that's from a poet.
- 15:08In him we live, move and have our being, for we also are his
- 15:12offspring. So he's telling this whole crowd
- 15:14of people here that we're all the offspring of this creator
- 15:18God. He's using natural revelation to
- 15:21the pagans. When Paul spoke to the Jews, he
- 15:24used the Old Testament. When he speaks to the pagans,
- 15:26he's using natural revelation of the the creation.
- 15:29And the creation causes our conscience.
- 15:31And though the Bible tells us in the book of Romans that there is
- 15:34a God that we're accountable to, therefore, since we are the
- 15:38offspring of God, we ought not to think that the divine nature
- 15:41is like gold or silver or stone, something shaped by art and
- 15:45man's devising. In other words, all this stuff
- 15:47you guys have developed, this isn't the divine nature of God.
- 15:51Truly, verse 30, these times of ignorance God overlooked.
- 15:56There was a time when God understood obviously the way
- 15:59we're wired, lost and without him, without hope in the world,
- 16:05He gave the human race a break for a period of time.
- 16:08Not that He justified what it was they were doing, but He knew
- 16:12they needed to have transformation and illumination
- 16:15that can only come from the Scriptures and the truth of the
- 16:18Word through the apostles and prophets.
- 16:20Truly, these signs of ignorance got overlooked, but now commands
- 16:24all men everywhere to repent. So that's the message then in
- 16:28the book of the Acts. That's the message now today
- 16:30that God is commanding every human being on the face of the
- 16:33planet. They need to repent, change
- 16:36their mind, and see and believe in the truth, because He's
- 16:42appointed today in which he will judge the world and
- 16:45righteousness by the man whom he's ordained.
- 16:48And of course, that's Jesus Christ.
- 16:50When he comes back the second time, he's coming back as the
- 16:53judge. He has given assurance of this
- 16:56to all by raising him from the dead.
- 16:58So again, he's preaching the gospel, the death, the burial,
- 17:01the resurrection of Jesus Christ, verse 32.
- 17:05And when they heard of the resurrection of the dead, some
- 17:08mocked while others said, we will hear you again on this
- 17:12matter. So Paul departed from them.
- 17:14So no matter where you are, who you are, even if you're an
- 17:16apostle, some will laugh at you and scoff at you and mock you.
- 17:22Some will believe and some will say, well, let me think about it
- 17:26and I might consider this later. And that's what happened here.
- 17:30So my challenge and yours and application of today's teaching
- 17:35is what are we doing with our lives right now as Christians?
- 17:41Are we participants in the building of the Kingdom through
- 17:47the preaching of the gospel? And that preaching of the gospel
- 17:52is just not Sundays in church, right?
- 17:54It's it's an everyday life, the opportunity to find these people
- 17:59who are groping out there trying to find an answer and they've
- 18:04never heard the answer, the ultimate answer that we know
- 18:09that Jesus is the way, the truth and the life.
- 18:11No man comes to the father, but through him.
- 18:15The good news here after Paul leaves them, it says some men
- 18:18join him and believed among them diagnosis the Areopagite and a
- 18:24woman named Damaris and others with them.
- 18:27So this the the wonder of this guy, his simple heart and loving
- 18:35God and doing what Jesus said go into all the world, preach the
- 18:40gospel to every living creature. That is the foundation and the
- 18:45ultimate command that Jesus left with His church, His disciples,
- 18:50His apostles, before He ascended into heaven, right?
- 18:54How are we doing with sharing the gospel?
- 18:59Personally? How are we doing with sharing
- 19:01the gospel as a church? We have a radio station and
- 19:05thank God it's out there and people are listening and
- 19:07believing and some of you have found the church because of
- 19:10that. But that's on the air.
- 19:13You got to find 100.3 FM. They actually hear anything,
- 19:16right? You and I are a 24/7 living
- 19:21broadcast person or people to be able to communicate to people in
- 19:28live time, wherever we are, the good news of the gospel.
- 19:33I think of Longfellow when I watched that movie and I said to
- 19:37my wife last night, I said I want to live for something
- 19:41that's bigger than myself. I get caught up in my life like
- 19:46you do too. And making a living or doing
- 19:49whatever we got to do every day and thank God for our careers
- 19:51and our, you know, the things God allows us to accumulate
- 19:55whatever. But at the end of the day, I
- 19:59want my life, and I know you do too, to, to account for
- 20:02something that's way beyond this natural realm.
- 20:05And so my prayer for me as well as you today.
- 20:11And that we have more love in our hearts, more care, and more
- 20:13concern for people who need a Savior.
- 20:17Inviting people to church, inviting people to listen to
- 20:20YouTube, giving people a Bible. We got Bibles out there to give
- 20:24to people to read and and define that that God is the promise
- 20:29keeper and the people would come to faith in Jesus Christ.
- 20:35Lord, you did this for me. You shed your blood, You gave
- 20:40yourself on the cross for my sins.
- 20:43What is it you want of me? He wants more of us.
- 20:49He wants more of our hearts or our lives.
- 20:54And He doesn't demand. He woos us to Himself.
- 20:59He causes the Word of God to soften our hearts and to cause
- 21:02us to know we need more of Jesus every day.
- 21:08We need to be sensitive to His Spirit and how He wants to use
- 21:13us in our lives, in our homes and our marriages and our kids,
- 21:16our families, neighborhood, community, church, world,
- 21:23remembering what He did for us. And then we leave here,
- 21:29hopefully with a sense of deeper understanding of what it means
- 21:36to be a witness of Jesus Christ. How can we be a more influential
- 21:43witness? And that's the work of the Holy
- 21:46Spirit in each of our lives. That's not something you or I
- 21:49figure out. Well, I'm going to do better at
- 21:51this or try harder at this. No, it's like, Holy Spirit, you
- 21:54live in me. Take my personality, my gifts,
- 21:57my abilities, my talents, my resources, and use them for what
- 22:02will count for eternity, right? Only one life will soon be
- 22:10passed. Only what's done for Christ will
- 22:15last. Father God, we come and we are
- 22:18humbled, Lord, by your word today.
- 22:21Lord, we're thrilled when we see this testimony and this history
- 22:26of these two guys, this going out and sharing the gospel and
- 22:31what you do as a result of the gospel being shared.
- 22:37You save souls, Lord, who've chosen the the preaching of the
- 22:43gospel is the power of God and to salvation to all those who
- 22:47believe to the Jew 1st and also to the Greek Father, I pray you
- 22:52would make us a a witnessing church, a witnessing people that
- 22:58Lord as we do our lives, Lord, that we look for opportunities
- 23:02as Paul did and he walked around the streets of Athens who who
- 23:08might be groping who might be desperate for a Savior.
- 23:15Lord, we surrender our lives to you again today afresh soften
- 23:21us, Lord, cause us to be enthralled with your love and
- 23:26your grace and your majesty. Make us gracious people, Lord,
- 23:32make us loving people. Make us caring and compassionate
- 23:35people for those who are without you.
- 23:38Lord, bless my brothers and sisters as we're on this journey
- 23:41together, Lord, learning more about you, learning how to to
- 23:45serve you, Lord. And we pray, Father, that all
- 23:50that we do and all that we say would all give honor and glory
- 23:54to You. Thank you for listening to this
- 23:58edition of Living Waters of Grace.
- 24:01Pastor Clark is teaching us about the book of Acts in this
- 24:04series. Acts is a powerful and unique
- 24:07part of Scripture, not just because it records the spread of
- 24:10the gospel geographically from Jerusalem to the ends of the
- 24:13earth, but also culturally. Acts shows us how the message of
- 24:18Jesus moved beyond its Jewish roots and began to reach the
- 24:21Gentile world. What started with Peter leading
- 24:24a small group in the Upper Room became a global movement with
- 24:28Paul taking the gospel to cities, synagogues and
- 24:32marketplaces across the Roman Empire.
- 24:35Acts captures this vital transition and reminds us that
- 24:39the good news of Jesus is for all people in every place.
- 24:43May we be inspired to carry that same gospel boldly into our
- 24:48world today. Living Waters of Grace comes to
- 24:51you from Calvary Chapel, Westmoreland.
