Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Steve Gillett: Kingslander Bar on the proposed new alcohol rules
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Good news for sports fans this morning. It's seeming to
- 0:02Speaker 1: be easier to go to the pub for a big
- 0:04Speaker 1: overseas match. Changes to the alcohol regulation laws mean ministers
- 0:08Speaker 1: can grant one off special trading hours for businesses that
- 0:11Speaker 1: stream major events. Steve Gillett is owner of the Kingsland,
- 0:15Speaker 1: a pub in Auckland and is with me this morning. Steve,
- 0:17Speaker 1: good morning mate, how.
- 0:19Speaker 2: Are we good?
- 0:20Speaker 1: Thank you? Is this good news? Is this going to
- 0:22Speaker 1: make a difference?
- 0:23Speaker 2: Oh? I think it's just positive for the hospitality industry.
- 0:26Speaker 2: It's been pretty pretty tough out there at the moment,
- 0:29Speaker 2: and I think it's just an opportunity to get extra
- 0:34Speaker 2: revenue streams, to increase your top your total sales at
- 0:38Speaker 2: the end of the day. So it gives a guys
- 0:40Speaker 2: opportunity to open and let the community come in and
- 0:43Speaker 2: watch these games and support the local rugby games for sure.
- 0:47Speaker 1: Is it a major events they're talking about multiple a
- 0:50Speaker 1: year or is it just a very special occasion or
- 0:53Speaker 1: do we just have to wait and see that. It's
- 0:54Speaker 1: up to the minister's discretion.
- 0:55Speaker 2: I suppose, I guess. I mean, coming up, we've got
- 0:59Speaker 2: the NDV two of England Scotland Wales, that could be
- 1:03Speaker 2: an option there four o'clock am games, and then we've
- 1:06Speaker 2: got the Soccer World Cup next year, so definitely opportunities
- 1:09Speaker 2: there here to open for those games.
- 1:12Speaker 1: There's people who say, and some might call them walsers,
- 1:15Speaker 1: but people who say, well, is you know, if someone's
- 1:18Speaker 1: just lost a football match and they're wasted drunk and
- 1:21Speaker 1: we're sending them out onto the street at nine am,
- 1:24Speaker 1: is it a sensible thing?
- 1:26Speaker 2: Well, I mean that's the thing where they are licensed
- 1:29Speaker 2: premises and we are regulated to keep eye. That's you know,
- 1:32Speaker 2: not intoxicated within the bar. So those guys can't be
- 1:35Speaker 2: in those in the premises. They have to be restricted
- 1:38Speaker 2: and not allowed in there. So you know, if everyone's
- 1:42Speaker 2: keeping to those of rules, those people shouldn't be in
- 1:45Speaker 2: those premises anyway. But you know we've done it before.
- 1:49Speaker 2: We've done it for the soccer, for the Rugby World Cup,
- 1:52Speaker 2: Cricket World Cup and done it quite well, not had
- 1:56Speaker 2: those problems and nothing's really come back, and that us'
- 1:59Speaker 2: the the residual.
- 2:03Speaker 1: You can say, Steve. There's also some changes to supermarkets
- 2:08Speaker 1: and bottle stores and stuff like that, which I know
- 2:11Speaker 1: governments of all creeds have changed over the years. What
- 2:14Speaker 1: is there much Do you notice the difference when they
- 2:17Speaker 1: restrict in Auckland as they have the hours for supermarkets
- 2:21Speaker 1: and bottle stores. Does it have much of an effect
- 2:23Speaker 1: on the pub?
- 2:25Speaker 2: I don't think so. I think people, you know, will
- 2:29Speaker 2: just work with what's happening. You know, there's a certain
- 2:31Speaker 2: how you're going to buy a whole, they'll go out
- 2:33Speaker 2: and do that and pre buy it and do that
- 2:35Speaker 2: and then we know when it comes to the bars,
- 2:38Speaker 2: we'll just tell up the bars when they're open and
- 2:39Speaker 2: you know, just as it is.
- 2:41Speaker 1: So yeah, appreciate your time. Steve Steve get At, owner
- 2:44Speaker 1: of the Kingsland Pub in Auckland. For more from Early
