- 0:59podcast. I'm Kelly Hatfield.
- 1:02John Mitchell: Hey, it I'm John Michell. So the topic today is
- 1:06perspective, the value of having perspective, and also how to get
- 1:12it. So what do you think about that? Kelly?
- 1:14Kelly Hatfield: I think it's so important, I think the value of
- 1:17perspective, you can immediately shift your state, shift your
- 1:23when you put things into perspective, and most likely,
- 1:25you're not quite as bad as you think, as they see me as you
- 1:28think they are when you use perspective as a tool to do
- 1:30that. So I'm excited to dig in and talk about this today, John,
- 1:33John Mitchell: right. Right. Well, you know, I tell you,
- 1:36it's, it's interesting. I gave you an example in, in my life,
- 1:40the power of perspective. And, and of course, you've lived
- 1:44through this with me, but yeah, you know, what, but three or
- 1:50four years ago, you and I create our course, and we're like, man,
- 1:55everybody's gonna want to do this. Everybody wants to be more
- 1:59successful, we got a 12 minute a day technique, we're gonna crush
- 2:04it. So if we go, well, we don't crush it. We're like, you know,
- 2:10why aren't people you know, lining up for this. And, you
- 2:14know, I think back to you know, I know, I told the story about
- 2:18meeting Darren Hardy and, and showing him all this in our
- 2:23template and our told me today technique, and you guys, John,
- 2:27people are aren't going to do this, they're not gonna spend 12
- 2:29minutes today on on this. And, and he says, reason is because
- 2:35for most people more success is merely a preference, merely a
- 2:39preference. And he says, You got to show this only driven people.
- 2:44And I remember him telling me that I'm like, Really, I you
- 2:48know, okay, you know, more than I do about this, but I just find
- 2:53that hard to believe. Well, he's exactly right. And so yeah, we
- 2:57come out, we create our course. And, and we sell it, but it's
- 3:03not near as many as we thought. And then we're like, Hmm, well,
- 3:09maybe. Maybe we need to really just vet people for being high
- 3:16achievers. And, and that seemed right. And it evolved to where
- 3:21we started doing coaching in conjunction with our course. And
- 3:26so we go to start, not not aggressively marketing it, but
- 3:32going to EO groups, entrepreneurs, organization,
- 3:36graves, were to be in the, in the group, they've got to have a
- 3:40business, that's grossing a million dollars a year. And, but
- 3:46only 5% of them are netting a million a year. And you and I
- 3:51both think, wow, you know, this is perfect, because they're just
- 3:55like you and me, were, you know, a few years ago, and we start
- 4:01pitching it and, and people are taking us up on it, but but
- 4:07they're not lining out the door for it. And, you know, I know,
- 4:13both of us felt, you know, frustration a year or two ago,
- 4:20like a couple years ago, and then we sort of have a change of
- 4:27perspective, maybe maybe the change of perspective came from
- 4:31just dialing in to what is reality, telling us and, you
- 4:36know, then it it became more obvious. Okay, not only do you
- 4:41have to only show this to people that are driven, you need to
- 4:45show this to people that that innately want to play the game
- 4:52of life at 100% That That alone is the driver and have control
- 4:57over their life not necessarily A the money. And and you know, I
- 5:03see today I'm more excited and happy with with think be it than
- 5:09I've ever been. And it's happened from that change of
- 5:14perspective that's evolved over the last probably three years?
- 5:21And it just says that all makes sense.
- 5:23Kelly Hatfield: It does and what was the so for you when you're
- 5:26talking about perspective, when I think about perspective, I
- 5:32immediately, you know, when we were talking a little bit about
- 5:35this before we started recording, you know, I
- 5:37immediately went to if, you know, like today, we're having a
- 5:44roof repaired on one of our rentals, you know, and it's
- 5:47like, you know, that wasn't an expense I was planning on. And
- 5:50then I watched the news. And you know, in the Midwest, there's
- 5:53tornadoes ripping through and their roofs ripped off their
- 5:55homes, and I'm like, Okay, I'm gonna get the roof.
- 5:59John Mitchell: Maybe this isn't the end of the world,
- 6:01Kelly Hatfield: maybe this isn't that big of a deal. You know? So
- 6:03immediately, when I think of perspective, that's kind of
- 6:07where my mind goes, is the, it could be worse, kind of, yeah,
- 6:12you know, so and so when you're talking about perspective,
- 6:14you're talking about it from a different vantage point than I
- 6:17think, when we first went into the conversation, then I was
- 6:20thinking,
- 6:21John Mitchell: well, and you know, think about this, I see
- 6:24that gaining perspective happens one of two ways, either a comes
- 6:30from the outside input of somebody else, or it, it comes
- 6:37from you sitting down and thinking through something like
- 6:43having lay, if I've got a challenge in my life, say with
- 6:47the business, me just sitting down and thinking through what
- 6:51is the challenge? How do I fix the challenge? What do I need
- 6:56more information, you know, and I see that, that, that, that was
- 7:01thinking sessions can be how you gain perspective, in fact, you
- 7:08can almost act as as your own consultant for your business.
- 7:13And you're sort of the ideal consultant for your business,
- 7:16because you know, all the nuances that a consultant
- 7:20doesn't know. And, you know, if you just ask yourself in your
- 7:24thinking session, to act as your own consultant, and lo and
- 7:29you're looking at your business from that third party
- 7:32perspective, oftentimes, just that change your perspective can
- 7:37cause you to see things that you won't see if you don't take that
- 7:42outside perspective. And
- 7:45Kelly Hatfield: 100%, I asked myself, like, as part of if I'm
- 7:49having a challenge, working through a challenge, if I'm, if
- 7:54I have an issue, and I'm having trouble working through it, one
- 7:58of your superpowers is simplifying what may seem to
- 8:01others as being complicated. So I will ask myself, What would
- 8:05John tell me to do? Today, Hey, stupid just.
- 8:13John Mitchell: Now Kelly, I think that's a very dangerous
- 8:16thing to be asking yourself. So I would really be careful with
- 8:21that.
- 8:24Kelly Hatfield: To the point where you were just saying it
- 8:27pulls me out of myself, right? It would I mean, and makes it
- 8:31external and makes me think about it from a different
- 8:33perspective or viewpoint because I'm too close to it, or too
- 8:37emotional about whatever it is. And so when I asked myself that
- 8:41question, then it's like, Okay, what's a simple way of thinking
- 8:44about this, you know, is really what I'm asking myself because,
- 8:48as I mentioned, that is one of your superpowers. So it's like,
- 8:51Okay, what's, how do I simplify this? You know, I think I've
- 8:55overcomplicated this or have I overcomplicated this? You know,
- 9:00so it's, it's that outside perspective? And that's the
- 9:03question I asked myself is what would How would John think about
- 9:07this? And that helps me work through it.
- 9:10John Mitchell: Right, that could also get you in prison, but But
- 9:15you know, it's funny, we've canceled himself Kelly, you're
- 9:21gonna have to shut down this business. You know, it was a
- 9:24good run. But you did what John suggested then you're done.
- 9:30Well, you know, it's funny how that I see that that
- 9:34subconsciously worse because before we got on the air, just a
- 9:38little perspective. I'm creating a new course at the University
- 9:45of Texas that's going to be required of all the the 800
- 9:48athletes to take and we're gonna teach him think it be it better,
- 9:52but I'm gonna go deeper on a number of things because I have,
- 9:56you know, a whole semester to teach him and I I was telling
- 10:01Kelly, the, the titles of the the course the two titles,
- 10:07because I'm too close to it to have perspective. And so I'm
- 10:11blazing really close to what she's telling me and she gives
- 10:15me her opinion, which, you know, was completely contrary to what
- 10:18ginger told me is Ginger about it, and she, she didn't like it.
- 10:23And so but that's the power of getting the wisdom of somebody
- 10:29on the outside to, to give you their opinion. And, and like I
- 10:34was telling you. Tomorrow, I'm gonna go see one of the faculty
- 10:39members in the business school at University of Texas. And and
- 10:45I've got the syllabus written and he's going to review it. And
- 10:49you know, the reality is, I could think, all day long on how
- 10:54to get this thing approved and move it forward. But I don't
- 10:57have his knowledge. And so sometimes solving a problem
- 11:02requires defining what knowledge do you not have? And where can I
- 11:06go to get it? Yep, absolutely. So what's that tell it tell his
- 11:11story in your business about where perspective changed and
- 11:16the impact you had? Yeah,
- 11:19Kelly Hatfield: I think the very first thing that comes to mind
- 11:22is just having gone through the pandemic, you know, so in March
- 11:26of 2020, we're rockin and rollin, you know, two of my
- 11:29brands that I have are related to hiring, staffing, recruiting.
- 11:33Well, of course, you know, what happened when everything shut
- 11:35down? Jobs stopped, you know, and so, it was overnight, it was
- 11:40within a week's time of kind of the shutdown, that revenue
- 11:44stopped, you know, and it was like, you know, you know, so
- 11:49going into that solution mode, but a couple of things. So the
- 11:52first thing, as far as perspective was, we had to look
- 11:56at doing business differently. And so one of those is obviously
- 12:01our employees working remotely, which is something we talked
- 12:04about for years, but it was like, Oh, we don't know how
- 12:06we're gonna, like, I don't know, whether I want to do that I
- 12:09like, you know, and so we just always back burnered It, well,
- 12:12we were forced overnight to go remote, you know, and so our
- 12:16perspective change quickly, around, you know, a meeting to
- 12:20operate and change how we went about doing business, you know,
- 12:24and to ask different questions of ourselves, like, okay, so
- 12:29this is happening. So, you know, what is? Are there other ways
- 12:35that we, how can we use this time that we have, you know, so
- 12:38we worked on processes we worked on, you know, of course, we took
- 12:41advantage of the PPP so that we can keep our employees are most
- 12:44of them anyway, but, um, you know, but how I use it now. So
- 12:49this goes back to kind of my example of the roofing issue,
- 12:52right, is when a challenge comes up now. I'm like, we went
- 12:58through the pandemic, this is no big deal.
- 13:01John Mitchell: That's a heck of a perspective.
- 13:03Kelly Hatfield: Yeah. So it totally shifts your perspective
- 13:05on like, if we can, and before that, like, we started the
- 13:08business 14 years ago, in the depths of a recession. So it was
- 13:12kind of always, like, we started this business, in a recession.
- 13:16So um, you know, so that was kind of always our, our
- 13:20perspective piece when we were going through difficult times.
- 13:23And now it's like, literally, we went through a worldwide
- 13:27pandemic, you know, where many of our competitors didn't make
- 13:31it. And, you know, and so if we did that we couldn't do
- 13:35anything. So for us, it was a real confidence builder. And
- 13:39that's how we choose, we've chosen to use that as just fuel
- 13:43for positivity, like, yeah, these are really lofty goals,
- 13:46but look at what we've made it through, you know, so anyway,
- 13:50that's how that perspective comes into play. For me anyway,
- 13:54that was the first example that jumped out at me,
- 13:56John Mitchell: right? Well, you know, I know in in terms of how
- 13:59to apply our 12 minute day technique to this. I know in in,
- 14:05in my visualization, I say something to the effect that all
- 14:11challenges can be figured out either through outside input or
- 14:18thinking through them is one of those two things and, and that
- 14:23has been so incredibly helpful to me just that, that that you
- 14:30know, synods because now, I look at everything very binary. It's
- 14:36either I need to think about it, or I need outside input. And,
- 14:42and, you know, I see every, every problem fits into those,
- 14:47one of those two things. So,
- 14:49Kelly Hatfield: no, I love that and and you're so specific,
- 14:53which is so important because this methodology requires that
- 14:56level of specificity, specificity, right? If If I were
- 15:00somebody who was just starting, like when I first started to get
- 15:05into this, so if you were looking for like a light
- 15:07version, and you didn't have a whole process, a great way like
- 15:11I, this goes through my head 20 times a day because it's part of
- 15:15my visualization, which is the quality of the questions you ask
- 15:19yourself and others determines the quality of your life. So
- 15:23when I'm going through a challenge, I'm right away going
- 15:26into how should I be looking at this? How else? What are? What's
- 15:30another way I could look at this situation? What's up because
- 15:33your brain will start to go to work on the solutions? Who else
- 15:36should I ask about this? Right? So like I am, anytime a
- 15:40challenge comes up or whatever, I'm just asking myself the how,
- 15:45what I don't ask myself, why a lot, because that kind of takes
- 15:48you because that can take you into a negative place. So I'm
- 15:50asking how, what, and when questions of myself when I'm
- 15:55looking at that. So that's one way so I would put that, like,
- 15:58it's a mantra that I have the quality of the questions I asked
- 16:01myself and others determines the quality of my life. And that's
- 16:05just running through my head on you know, so I've got it up. I
- 16:09used to I don't anymore up on my mirror in my bathroom. It's up
- 16:13on my phone. It's a screensaver on a lake. So just as a reminder
- 16:17to continue to program my subconscious to be asking myself
- 16:21questions, meaningful questions. And that often gets you to what
- 16:25we're talking about with perspective, but a simpler way
- 16:28to go about doing it.
- 16:29John Mitchell: Right. Right. Right. Well, and you know,
- 16:32again, I, I just, I was just thinking about this the other
- 16:36day. You know, ginger, and I were having our Sunday night
- 16:41relationship talk. And I was telling her really two things I
- 16:45was saying, you know, how I love mentally where where I'm at with
- 16:52regards to think it be it and, and the evolution of it. Whereas
- 16:57a couple of years ago, I was frustrated. Well, of course, I
- 17:00was frustrated because I was pitching it to, to people that
- 17:05weren't ideal for it. And whatever you whatever your
- 17:08product is in your business, you got to really be clear about who
- 17:13is my ideal client, because if you're pitching to people that
- 17:16are not really your ideal client, you're going to be
- 17:19frustrated. And and what a difference that perspective has
- 17:23made. And, and you know, I was telling ginger last night, you
- 17:28know, she I think I told you she broke her hand.
- 17:31Unknown: Yep. Pickleball pickleball. Right.
- 17:35John Mitchell: It was a tragic pickleball Yeah. And so, but she
- 17:41broke a bone in her hand and so she had to have surgery about
- 17:46three weeks ago and she just got the cast off a couple of days
- 17:50ago. And of course, I've lived this with her and it was her
- 17:54right hand which made all the worse and and I'm like ginge you
- 17:59know now just just chill because I'm, I'm the big picture guy.
- 18:03She's the as you know, the, the detail warrior in the group.
- 18:08Yep. And, and I said now, just let's get back to we're living
- 18:13the dream. You know, everyday we're living the dream. Let's
- 18:16save her let's, and she's like, Yes, I needed to hear that. And,
- 18:21and so again, perspective.
- 18:23Kelly Hatfield: Yep, absolutely. I love that. So,
- 18:27John Mitchell: okay, well, I hope you guys found this
- 18:30interesting. So until next time, we'll see you.
- 18:35Kelly Hatfield: Thanks for listening today. If you've had
