Latest / Elon Musk Podcast / Musk Says Retirement Saving May Soon Be Irrelevant.
Transcript
- 0:00Elon Musk recently suggested that in 10 to 20 years, saving
- 0:03for retirement will not matter, arguing that advantages in AI,
- 0:08energy and robotics could usher in an era of abundance that
- 0:11renders traditional nest eggs obsolete.
- 0:15Comments prompted swift pushback from retirement scholars and
- 0:19wealth managers who said the vision overlooks stubborn real
- 0:22world constraints and household risks.
- 0:24Now Musk's case rests on a sweeping productivity boom,
- 0:28smarter software, cheaper power and ambitious automation,
- 0:32driving down the cost of goods and services from healthcare to
- 0:36education, until scarcity fades. Even if parts of that prospect
- 0:40materialize, it does not follow that workers can safely stop
- 0:44building financial reserves today.
- 0:47Now, researchers at leading retirement centers note that
- 0:50near term risks remain unavoidable market volatility,
- 0:54job loss, illness and potential changes to public benefits.
- 0:59Several emphasized that Social Security faces funding
- 1:02challenges that, absent legislative fixes, could
- 1:05increase the burden on personal savings rather than eliminate
- 1:08it. Advisors also stressed a basic
- 1:10point. Future abundance is just an
- 1:13idea. Rent, groceries and medical
- 1:16bills are always going to be there.
- 1:19Now. Some critics focused on
- 1:20distribution rather than technology.
- 1:23They argue that whether abundance translates into broad
- 1:26financial security depends on political choices, taxation
- 1:29transfers and the design of social insurance, which rarely
- 1:32move in lockstep with engineering breakthroughs.
- 1:35Innovation can arrive quickly. Equitable systems to share its
- 1:40gains typically take decades now.
- 1:44Others pointed to history. Past technology waves lifted
- 1:48productivity without reliably shortening work weeks or even
- 1:51distributing wealth. One researcher recalled that in
- 1:54the 1950s, some employees at a defense think tank skipped
- 1:58pension contributions because nuclear war felt inevitable.
- 2:03That never came. The retirement shortfalls
- 2:06definitely did, though. Now, for households deciding
- 2:10what to do now, the guidance from academics and practitioners
- 2:14is consistent. Keep continuing to do what
- 2:18you're doing. Contribute to workplace plans,
- 2:21at least enough to capture an employer match.
- 2:23Maintain an emergency fund so short term shocks don't force
- 2:26withdrawals. Revisit portfolio risk.
- 2:29As retirement approaches and assumes Social Security will
- 2:32remain an important but incomplete pillar of support, it
- 2:36might go away. And if a world of abundance
- 2:39arrives on an aggressive timetable, accumulated savings
- 2:42will become an extra margin of freedom in a cheaper economy, an
- 2:47outcome few would regret. The broader debate remains
- 2:52unresolved. Though technological optimism
- 2:55imagines a future or scarcity receipts, the personal finance
- 2:59discipline recognizes the bills come due on schedule.
- 3:03Until policy catches up with the promise of abundance, most
- 3:08households are just better off to save.
- 3:10And you treat abundance as a potential upside just in case.
- 3:15So you'll have this nest egg. Let's say you save up to
- 3:19$100,000. And the abundance does come.
- 3:23You know, we've been promised abundance in the past.
- 3:26Henry Ford for one. Let's just talk about that.
- 3:29Henry Ford talked about how everybody would be able to
- 3:32afford pretty much everything because cars would make it
- 3:36cheaper to transport goods, which it did.
- 3:40Of course, that's much easier than a train or a plane.
- 3:44But the vehicles transporting, they needed drivers.
- 3:49Those drivers needed jobs, so those drivers got paid.
- 3:54The abundance never came though. We still work long hours.
- 3:58Some of us don't make enough money to survive.
- 4:01The abundance never came. It's tried to happen a bunch of
- 4:04times. Basically, it's rich people
- 4:08saying that abundance is coming because of what rich people do.
- 4:11They already have abundance, they already have everything
- 4:14they'll ever need. And for us, we have to fall back
- 4:18on the same old ideas. We never know what's going to
- 4:21happen after the next paycheck. Your employer could fire you.
- 4:25No matter how secure you think you are, your employer could
- 4:29just pull the plug on you. They might give you a little bit
- 4:31of notice, but also you don't know how the financials are
- 4:34doing at your company unless you're in that department.
- 4:38Case in point, recently I was hired on as a contract worker.
- 4:43I had a three month contract with the company.
- 4:47After 2 1/2 months, the company said hey, we ran out of money.
- 4:53We did 2 giant acquisitions. Everybody that's a contractor is
- 4:58not a contractor anymore. So I didn't have that extra half
- 5:01a month to work. And after that it was a
- 5:04contractor to hire position. So now they're not going to hire
- 5:07me full time because of that. You never know what's going to
- 5:11happen and because of things like that, I need your support.
- 5:16I've been doing this show for six or seven years straight and
- 5:20I will continue doing this for the next 10 years.
- 5:22And all I need is one minute of your time, one second, actually
- 5:25hit the subscribe or follow button.
- 5:27You don't even know how much that means to the show, how much
- 5:30that means to me personally. And if you have been listening
- 5:32to the show for a while, I get it.
- 5:35Sometimes you forget to hit the subscribe or follow button.
- 5:37I do it all the time on YouTube. I do it all the time on podcasts
- 5:40and I every once in a while I'm like, Oh yeah, this show is
- 5:43great. I don't know why I have not
- 5:45followed it. It's in my recommendations,
- 5:47sure. But on podcasting it's very
- 5:49important to follow or subscribe to a show because that's how we
- 5:54get our audience. And if we have a bigger
- 5:57audience, it means I can continue doing this and making
- 6:00this podcast better. Also, let me know in the
- 6:04comments if you have comments on your podcast player.
- 6:07What do you think of this? Do you think there's going to be
- 6:09over abundance with robo taxis? You're still going to need money
- 6:15to do all the things that you need to do.
- 6:17You're still going to need to eat food.
- 6:20You'll be able to, of course. You'll still be able to own a
- 6:24car, you'll be able to own a home.
- 6:27But if the price is so expensive for you where you live, there
- 6:31might be time to think about living someplace else, someplace
- 6:37with a lower threshold to buy a home.
- 6:41There are plenty of places outside of the United States
- 6:44that are much cheaper than the United States.
- 6:47I mean, if you go to the grocery store and you have one bag of
- 6:50groceries and it cost $200, that's a problem.
- 6:56And if this abundance is a promise that Elon Musk and the
- 7:01ultra mega wealthy can predict and they can actually make this
- 7:05promise come true, that's great. It's never happened in the past
- 7:08and it will never happen. How many thousands of years have
- 7:10humans been humans? The rich people get richer and
- 7:14the poor people stay poor. Sometimes there's a nice middle
- 7:18class some places all over the world, there is a nice middle
- 7:21class in the United States right now, there's not really a middle
- 7:25class anymore. You can't have a regular nine to
- 7:28five job and feed a family of four.
- 7:33So if you have two kids, two parents and you may have a dog,
- 7:38might have a cat, white pick a fence, the American dream, you
- 7:42know, you can have that big house.
- 7:43You could buy a house with that wage and also buy a car and also
- 7:47go on vacation and have some time off.
- 7:49That doesn't exist anymore. You have to have a side hustle
- 7:52and your side hustles have to have side hustles just to get
- 7:54by. You can't just have one person
- 7:57making the money anymore. You have to have two people in
- 8:00the household making money, and that's just the normal life of a
- 8:04normal person. I'm not saying some people are
- 8:07outside of that, because of course there are.
- 8:09There's some people that make a bunch of money and live in a
- 8:11place where it doesn't cost as much.
- 8:15But for the most of us, most people here, the abundance,
- 8:19according to these experts, is not going to come.
- 8:22But if it does, that's great. That's great.
- 8:25Maybe it's another bubble. Maybe people are going to start
- 8:27making a bunch of money. But also remember that Elon Musk
- 8:31says a lot of things. And I'm here as the podcaster,
- 8:35as the podcast about Elon Musk, the original Elon Musk podcast.
- 8:42Take everything he says with a grain of salt because I know
- 8:44I've been covering him for almost 10 years now.
- 8:47FSD, Remember when that was going to happen?
- 8:50Almost a decade ago and it still hasn't happened.
- 8:53And not actual FSD. It's a still driver assist.
- 8:59So remember, when he says something, don't take it to
- 9:03heart, just remember it's a great idea.
- 9:05He has some great ideas, and eventually maybe it might
- 9:07happen, but the overabundance of power, overabundance of food,
- 9:12overabundance of wealth, take it all with a grain of salt.
- 9:17So that's it for today. Everybody take care of
- 9:19yourselves and each other, and I'll see you in the next one.
