- 0:00SPEAKER_00: Hello Christians, this is Dallas Beacham, and I've got good news.
- 0:07SPEAKER_00: Some people open the Bible looking for a sentence that agrees with what they already believe.
- 0:13SPEAKER_00: Others open it only when they are troubled and need a quick answer.
- 0:19SPEAKER_00: But the Bible invites us to come with a different spirit, a readiness to listen.
- 0:27SPEAKER_00: In the seventeenth chapter of Acts, Paul and Silas came to Berea.
- 0:32SPEAKER_00: The people there heard teaching that was new to them.
- 0:37SPEAKER_00: They could have rejected it because it was unfamiliar.
- 0:41SPEAKER_00: They could have accepted it merely because an apostle spoke it.
- 0:47SPEAKER_00: Instead, Scripture says they received the word with all readiness of mind and searched the scriptures daily whether those things were so.
- 0:59SPEAKER_00: Notice the balance.
- 1:01SPEAKER_00: They were willing to hear, but they were also willing to search.
- 1:06SPEAKER_00: An open mind did not mean an empty mind.
- 1:10SPEAKER_00: Careful examination did not mean a hard heart.
- 1:15SPEAKER_00: They received the word and then they compared what they heard with Scripture.
- 1:21SPEAKER_00: That is where faithful Bible study begins.
- 1:25SPEAKER_00: Before asking what does this verse mean to me?
- 1:29SPEAKER_00: We should first ask what does this passage say?
- 1:34SPEAKER_00: Who is speaking?
- 1:36SPEAKER_00: To whom are they speaking?
- 1:38SPEAKER_00: What happened before these words were spoken?
- 1:42SPEAKER_00: What follows them?
- 1:44SPEAKER_00: Is this a command for us to obey, a promise to trust, a warning to remember, or an event the Bible records so that we may learn from it?
- 1:57SPEAKER_00: A single sentence can be misunderstood when it is removed from its setting.
- 2:03SPEAKER_00: Imagine receiving a letter that says do not go.
- 2:08SPEAKER_00: Without reading the lines before and after it, you may not know who should not go, where they should not go, or why they should not go.
- 2:20SPEAKER_00: The words are clear, but their meaning depends upon their setting.
- 2:25SPEAKER_00: Scripture deserves at least that same care.
- 2:29SPEAKER_00: Paul told Timothy to study.
- 2:32SPEAKER_00: Show thyself approved unto God.
- 2:36SPEAKER_00: Our first responsibility is not to impress other people, it is to handle God's word faithfully before God.
- 2:44SPEAKER_00: That requires time, it requires prayer, and sometimes it requires the humility to admit that a familiar explanation does not fit the passage as well as we once thought it did.
- 3:00SPEAKER_00: Jesus said search the scriptures.
- 3:03SPEAKER_00: The Bereans search daily.
- 3:05SPEAKER_00: Timothy was told to study.
- 3:08SPEAKER_00: These words remind us that understanding the Bible is not careless work, yet it is hopeful work because God has not left us without a written witness.
- 3:20SPEAKER_00: This week, open your Bible with a willing heart.
- 3:25SPEAKER_00: Do not rush to defend a tradition or prove an argument.
- 3:29SPEAKER_00: Read the paragraph.
- 3:31SPEAKER_00: Notice the people, the place, the repeated words, and the purpose.
- 3:37SPEAKER_00: Ask God to help you receive what is written, not what you wish you had written.
- 3:44SPEAKER_00: When we approach Scripture with humility and care, the Bible becomes more than a collection of familiar sayings.
- 3:52SPEAKER_00: Its message begins to stand together.
- 3:55SPEAKER_00: Passages that once seem separate begin to explain one another.
- 4:01SPEAKER_00: We learn not only to quote the word, but to hear it.
- 4:06SPEAKER_00: And that is good news.
- 4:09SPEAKER_00: God's word can be searched, understood, believed, and obeyed.
- 4:15SPEAKER_00: Readiness means we come willing to receive correction, while examination means we test what we hear by the written word.
- 4:27SPEAKER_00: The Bereans show that these habits strengthen each other rather than compete.
- 4:33SPEAKER_00: Careful reading also asks about the writer, the first audience, the setting, and the purpose.
- 4:41SPEAKER_00: Those questions do not push faith away.
- 4:45SPEAKER_00: They help us hear the message that was actually given.
- 4:49SPEAKER_00: Humility keeps us from making every verse say what we already want.
- 4:55SPEAKER_00: Prayer asks God for wisdom and patient observation keeps us near the words on the page.
- 5:04SPEAKER_00: The goal is not merely to collect facts or win arguments.
- 5:08SPEAKER_00: We listen so that truth may shape our trust, correct our steps, and lead us into obedience.
- 5:16SPEAKER_00: Faithful hearing prepares the heart for faithful daily obedience today.
- 5:24SPEAKER_00: I hope today's message has touched your heart and causes you to have a good day.
