- 0:00As part of Ferrari Fridays, William Ross from the Exotic Car Marketplace will
- 0:04be discussing all things Ferrari and interviewing people that live and breathe.
- 0:08The Ferrari brand topics range from road cars to racing drivers to owners,
- 0:13as well as auctions, private sales and trends in the collector market.
- 0:28Welcome to the Ferrari Marketplace Podcast.
- 0:30I have my, uh, good friend here, Mr. Chris Meley from the Prancing horse
- 0:34in Nashville, who hopefully, maybe we can, uh, coax a little bit more to
- 0:36be on here more consistently because, you know, he's wealth of information.
- 0:40Today we are going to discuss the Meko Kissy Auction, specifically
- 0:45the Bachman collection.
- 0:46Maybe touch a little bit on the GTO.
- 0:48Chris was very integral in bringing the collection and the GTO to Mecu
- 0:53to have them cross the block there, and so he knows 'em very well.
- 0:55But there's some things we wanna kind of clear the air about after the fact
- 0:59as being kind of thrown out all over the social media and what you wanna call it.
- 1:02But then also, I got asked a question there a couple times when I was leaving
- 1:06from people asking, well, why so much?
- 1:08Everything like that.
- 1:09Specific reasons why.
- 1:11Honestly, you can see where that was.
- 1:13I don't wanna say outlier, but it justified it because armed Sotheby's
- 1:17had their sale out in, uh, Arizona today and some of the cars that
- 1:20were in there, you can see now.
- 1:22Okay, there we go.
- 1:23That's where the market should be at.
- 1:24Just that the ones in the Bachman collection, you know, they're
- 1:27very, very special cars and I, I guess we could jump right outta the
- 1:31gate and start with the end zone.
- 1:33Yeah, the Enzo's a real special car, obviously, because you know, it had
- 1:36so many different special features.
- 1:38Obviously it was one of the yellow cars and there wasn't that many yellow cars.
- 1:41Uh, I don't have to count in front of me right now, but I wanna say it was 11 cars.
- 1:45We did the research on it.
- 1:46I'm just trying to go through 48 cars.
- 1:48In my head, but, but uh, yeah, I mean it was a neat car.
- 1:53Obviously a lot of people, you know, they first saw the car, they saw it
- 1:56with the red seats that were in there with the yellow Daytona stripes, and
- 1:59then they said, oh, well, you know, I'm not really sure about the inside.
- 2:02You know, they've always made, you know, some sort of analogy about
- 2:06McDonald's that was always coming up and what was going on with the interior.
- 2:09But Phil had a vision, you know, Phil said, Hey, look, let's go ahead and
- 2:12let's do something outside the box.
- 2:14The first color combo that was like, that was on the five 50 Porchetta.
- 2:17So he started that back in oh one a few years or earlier.
- 2:20He did, you know, on the 3, 5, 5 fiorano he did the yellow and blue.
- 2:24So he either was going at that point, yellow and blue, or yellow
- 2:28and red, and the exterior was obviously yellow was a must, and
- 2:32then he would go ahead and modify.
- 2:33But like on that particular car, on the end zone in particular, you know
- 2:36the uprights in the engine compartment, there's those two upright supports
- 2:40that go in the engine compartment.
- 2:41They were both polished.
- 2:43There was.
- 2:43Certain bits inside the engine compartment that are normally just matte carbon.
- 2:47His were glossed over and clear coated and they were polished.
- 2:50You had the Enzo Ferrari signature on the rear deck lid.
- 2:53You had the lowers on the car, meaning the lower trim going all the way
- 2:57around, including the rear diffuser painted in yellow from the factory.
- 3:01The car came off the assembly line with the black seats.
- 3:05There's photos of the car and if you looked at the videos that we made and
- 3:08we, we were running them, there was some photos of Phil working on the car
- 3:12and we had all the additional photos and it shows the car coming off the
- 3:15assembly line with the yellow seats.
- 3:17But Phil wanted the red ones, so the red ones just weren't ready.
- 3:21And before he picked up the car, 'cause he went back to go ahead and
- 3:24take delivery of the car in Europe.
- 3:26He went back and then the red seats were installed at the factory.
- 3:29So the car left the factory with the, uh, red seats, but the car came off
- 3:34the assembly line with the black seats.
- 3:36So the car came with two sets of seats, which was, you know, super unique.
- 3:40The other thing was just the little other stuff that was in there, some
- 3:43of the other pads on the doors and on the passenger side there was a
- 3:47split, so you had the yellow leather.
- 3:49That was the only car I've ever seen like that.
- 3:51The only other car I saw that was really, really unique, but it
- 3:54wasn't obviously on Phil's, was um.
- 3:56Jean Tots and Schumacher's car.
- 3:59You know, there was two or three cars that had power windows in them,
- 4:02and that obviously was designed just on a couple of the cars, but
- 4:05those car was a super unique car.
- 4:08You didn't have the power windows, but he had everything else on it.
- 4:11Super low miles.
- 4:12So yeah, that's why the car is, you know, we always say in the auto industry
- 4:15it did a moonshot and we knew it was gonna go ahead and do a big number,
- 4:19but when you get two guys, they're going at it and you know the deal.
- 4:23Once their ego gets behind, you know they're bidding,
- 4:27then it becomes an ego battle.
- 4:29Either one of them is saying, Hey look, I'm not gonna lose.
- 4:31I know I'm probably overpaying for the car, but I'm not giving up.
- 4:36And you know, it started to run because the car started to stall out
- 4:39somewhere around 12 million, and I was standing up on the block next to Dana.
- 4:43You know, we're looking at the board and we're saying, okay, you know, I
- 4:46think it's starting to slow down, but the auctioneer did an amazing job.
- 4:49Yeah.
- 4:49He was still working it and then it started to pick up again.
- 4:52And then it started to really jump.
- 4:54I think they were going by $250,000 bumps and before, you know, it
- 4:59just started going back and forth, back and forth, back and forth.
- 5:02And then I look back up and within, it seemed like a minute,
- 5:06we were at 16 million plus.
- 5:09So now I'm like, okay.
- 5:10And you're looking around and you're, and, and I'm, I'm on the block and
- 5:14I'm looking around, I'm looking left and looking right, and I'm saying, am
- 5:17I the only one who was like watching, like, it was almost like surreal on
- 5:21that car because it was the highest one outta the whole collection.
- 5:25Out of all 46 Ferraris, it was car that obviously did the most, and candidly,
- 5:29before that we knew it was gonna be there.
- 5:32We were almost thinking that the F 50 might outpace it after seeing the
- 5:35Ralph Lauren car at Pebble Beach.
- 5:37Yeah, so that car, you know, it was yellow, was one of the two yellow
- 5:40cars, but the flip side was, it had some miles on it, but it was yellow
- 5:45and it had, you know, the provenance of Ralph Lauren that owned the car.
- 5:48Whereas on this car it was single owner car.
- 5:52You're saying to yourself, okay, we got a single owner car and it's
- 5:56super, super unique, and you're getting ready to see the car.
- 6:00You know, you, you know, you're, it's gonna take off the, the
- 6:02numbers were really, really high.
- 6:05You know, when we came to the F 50, we kind of knew that it was gonna
- 6:09do somewhere in that neighborhood.
- 6:11Again, it started to go back and forth between two guys.
- 6:14Again, it ran up quite quickly, but 251 miles.
- 6:18Okay, so go find one.
- 6:20The only other one that I knew of, I saw, I sold, when I worked for Roger Penske,
- 6:23I sold Roger Penske's car, and it's actually right down the road from here.
- 6:27The ex Penske car is with Dr.
- 6:29Rick Workman.
- 6:30So he actually has that car.
- 6:31Oh yeah.
- 6:31Mm-hmm.
- 6:32And, and he has some miles on it now, but like, you know, I sold
- 6:34it, I think it had 300 miles.
- 6:36Now it has somewhere around, I wanna say 600 miles.
- 6:41But, you know, we sold that car in 2009, and I wanna say
- 6:46that we sold it for $975,000.
- 6:49And that was a huge number after the collapse of everything that happened.
- 6:53Yeah.
- 6:53In, uh, late oh eight.
- 6:54So that was really a big number, and it came with all really cool stuff.
- 6:58The letters from Roger and back and forth with, you know, Montelo.
- 7:02And it just, it had some great, I said the, the provenance.
- 7:06On the car is what drives it.
- 7:07When you look at like the Bachman collection, and when you look
- 7:10at certain other cars, I always say it goes in this order.
- 7:13I mean, not exactly in this order, but these are the
- 7:15contributing factors that play in.
- 7:17You're gonna have the car itself, obviously, you're gonna have color.
- 7:21Mileage options.
- 7:23If the cars, you know, paint a sample or something that's really unique,
- 7:26which a lot of the Bachman cars were okay, so now you have a unicorn and
- 7:30then you're gonna look at mileage.
- 7:31The Bachman cars had like, on the most part, super low mileage.
- 7:35And then you have what I call the intangible.
- 7:38Is it the last one?
- 7:39Was it the first one?
- 7:40Is it the last one that was delivered in the us?
- 7:42Is it one of the very last cars and there's always
- 7:45people that just run for that.
- 7:47There was a lot of people that said to me, well, why did the F
- 7:5040, the two F forties, why did the one F 40 do so much more money?
- 7:54And when the mileage difference between the car was roughly about 400 miles,
- 7:57both 1990 twos, one was delivered in Italy, one was delivered in the us.
- 8:02Well, the Italian car.
- 8:04To go ahead and get those EE plates that were on that car, you have to go
- 8:08ahead and get what they call in Italy, the COC, and if you get the COC, you
- 8:13have to have an engine plate inside the engine compartment on the frame.
- 8:17Whereas US cars, we have it in the door jamb.
- 8:19That's the only F 40 that I know of, and I checked with the guys at the
- 8:23factory and everyone else agreed with me.
- 8:26It was the only one that had two VIN plates.
- 8:29So when have you ever seen two VIN plates in a car?
- 8:31You know, there was people that were doing their inspections and they were like.
- 8:34Totally flustered about it, you know, but we, we, we knew about
- 8:37it because we did the inspections.
- 8:39You know, we went out there and we did the inspections.
- 8:41It was myself, Emiliano, and Marco.
- 8:43Marco and Emiliano both worked at the Ferrari factory for over 20 years.
- 8:47Both of them, you know, they had either one of them worked on the assembly
- 8:51line for many years, and then they eventually went on in em case Emiliano
- 8:55went to the experimental department.
- 8:57And then he was involved with Ferrari Classic K. It was
- 9:00the same thing with Marco.
- 9:01Marco obviously came from the production side, and then he went on the after
- 9:05sales side on the service business, and then eventually made his way back to
- 9:09classic K and was in charge of Ferrari Classic K, and they worked together.
- 9:13So they knew exactly, you know what to look for.
- 9:16They were, you know, Emiliano was, he was the boss on the assembly line.
- 9:20You know, whether it was the eighth cylinder or the 12th cylinder line.
- 9:23Marco was, you know, similar.
- 9:25They worked their way up.
- 9:26He worked on the 2 88 and Emiliano was in charge of everything else.
- 9:30When you go through all that stuff, you know, you get a chance to see all that.
- 9:34You know, to your point, first last producer, that there's gentlemen,
- 9:37individuals, they collect first, last, everything like that.
- 9:40So it fits into their collection.
- 9:42But one owner, I mean, again, find another one.
- 9:44Especially those because like, you know, f fifties Enzos, F forties, I mean there's
- 9:48always usually a long chain of owners, at least a two or three on those for sure.
- 9:53But trying to, yeah, and then, so we're trying to find that single or stuff.
- 9:56I mean, it was very interesting to see.
- 9:58Question though, 'cause I know you know the gentleman very well.
- 10:02Did Ian have a little bit of seller's remorse?
- 10:05No.
- 10:05You know what's funny, Ian?
- 10:06You know, we, we arranged a dinner.
- 10:08Ian's a good friend of mine, so we had a dinner for all the people.
- 10:11So we had all the Italians, even Luca Zanetti, who was the current president
- 10:16and CEO, Ferrari, north America.
- 10:17He came in, he had to leave.
- 10:19He couldn't make it to the auction, but it was kind of like a hit and run.
- 10:22He came in and he was there.
- 10:24We had a dinner at Ian's house and you know, we were all chatting
- 10:26and Ian has quite the collection.
- 10:27Yeah.
- 10:27La Ferrari.
- 10:28LA Ferrari, APTA 4 58, especiali, apta.
- 10:31He's got some really, really cool stuff and not a huge collection,
- 10:35you know, talking about, you know, maybe a dozen cars, but.
- 10:38Great stuff.
- 10:39Two 80 HGTO 2 75 gtb.
- 10:42Four four cam.
- 10:43Just great stuff.
- 10:45Ian's a good, you know, they're mates, you know Ian and Tom Hartley Jr.
- 10:48Yeah.
- 10:48And they put together an event every year that they do.
- 10:51And it's, uh, you know, Zach Brown goes on at all kinds of, guys
- 10:55go on this event that they do.
- 10:56It's a really cool event because look, at the end of the day, regardless of what car
- 11:00company you work for, or car guys, right?
- 11:02Yeah, exactly.
- 11:03You know, we all love cars and, and, and there's that
- 11:05camaraderie between all of us.
- 11:07So it was good.
- 11:08You know, we were all together and I had all the guys there from Ferrari.
- 11:11I had a few other guests that were there, some clients, good friends, what have you.
- 11:15Everybody loved it, you know, it was fun to get everybody primed up.
- 11:17So I said, Ian, are you gonna come to the auction?
- 11:20And Ian's like, yeah, yeah, I'm gonna be there.
- 11:21He said, I'm gonna go ahead and bring Joshua's son.
- 11:23And we went over there and you know, it was awesome.
- 11:26He had another friend of his, with him.
- 11:28It was good, you know, we were all there and Ian sold the car.
- 11:31Funny story about the car.
- 11:32Not everybody knows the story.
- 11:33We kind of talked about it and it's kind of been brushed over,
- 11:36but the real story is this.
- 11:37Phil Bachman went to the factory in in 1995, so he went, he
- 11:42was invited to see the car.
- 11:43They showed him the car before they unveiled it in Geneva in 1995.
- 11:47The F 50.
- 11:48He went to the factory.
- 11:50He was coming back to do some configuration.
- 11:52So it was a few months after that.
- 11:54I think Geneva was in March, so it might have been May or June.
- 11:58It was a little warm out.
- 11:59Phil showed up.
- 12:00He got there a little early.
- 12:01He used to stay at the Hotel Marella Palace or one of the
- 12:04other hotels that are right there.
- 12:06He was casual, so he showed up in like a shirt and a pair of jeans.
- 12:10You know, normally how you travel on an airplane and normally when you go
- 12:13inside the factory, generally speaking, you know, you show up with slacks
- 12:17on dress, shirt tie, and a jacket.
- 12:21Times have changed since 1995, you know, 30 plus years.
- 12:25Not everybody's wearing a tie every day.
- 12:27You know, sometimes it's the open collar look, but you still have a sport
- 12:30jacket on and you know, you look sharp.
- 12:32And I always joke, you know, Italians get dressed up to go
- 12:35ahead and go get gasoline, you know, or petro or whatever they do.
- 12:38You know those, they're dressed up.
- 12:39They're dressed up for everything.
- 12:41Yeah.
- 12:41So he got there and somebody made a little bit of an off-color comment saying, you
- 12:46know, Phil, you should be more conscious of when you come here, you should show up.
- 12:51With a jack and a tie on.
- 12:52And what happened was he stopped, he was at the traffic light,
- 12:56from my understanding with the story outside the factory.
- 12:58Somebody saw him and said, Phil, come on in.
- 13:00Have a quick, you know, espresso.
- 13:03Phil said, okay, you know, he was a little tired, obviously.
- 13:05And uh, he parked the car and he just walked across the street.
- 13:08'cause the hotels, you know, across the street he went in, or, you know, you
- 13:11know, down the road and whatever it is.
- 13:13I don't know which hotel he stayed at.
- 13:14But anyway, he goes in.
- 13:16Somebody sees him and they make this comment to him, you know, you
- 13:19should be here and you know you should know better than to do this.
- 13:21Well, he flipped out, he canceled the F 50 and he canceled the F
- 13:25five 12 M. And I think, I think.
- 13:29He, he knew that they were making a replacement car for the F five 12 M,
- 13:33which was the Marine, which if you look at the collection, he never had one.
- 13:37So Phil canceled those cars.
- 13:39He surely would've had car number three of the F 50 in yellow, 'cause there
- 13:44was two that were made for the us.
- 13:46There was Paul Frame's car, there was Ralph Lauren's car, and for
- 13:50sure he would've had a yellow one.
- 13:52So who knows the way the world would've changed.
- 13:55He, he didn't get a car, so he canceled.
- 13:58Everything.
- 13:59So it took Simoni ska years to go ahead and mend the fences.
- 14:04So he didn't buy any cars until 1999 when he got the 3 5, 5 fiorano.
- 14:09And when we were going through the collection, through the
- 14:11archive, we saw all the faxes.
- 14:13'cause there was no emails back then of Simoni writing a, of
- 14:17sending a fax to Phil and saying, Phil, I just wanna let you know.
- 14:21I saw Loris Chea and LO works for Zazi now, and he said, Hey, I saw
- 14:26Lori and they're gonna be coming out with a limited edition 3, 5 5.
- 14:31It's gonna be numbered.
- 14:32And he slowly got filled back into the deal and sure enough,
- 14:36bygones are being bygones.
- 14:37But I think Phil dug in and for four years he didn't get a car.
- 14:40He went from 95 to 99.
- 14:42He didn't get a new vehicle, nothing.
- 14:44They came out with some pretty stout cars in there.
- 14:46Yeah.
- 14:46Obviously you had, you had the Marineo, obviously he missed out on the F five
- 14:5012 M and he missed out on the F 50.
- 14:53So going back to your original question, how he got the car, he
- 14:57wanted a really low mileage car and he knew that Ian had the car.
- 15:01From my understanding, the market on the car at that point in time.
- 15:05It's about 10 years ago.
- 15:06It was about 1.75 million for a perfect car, and we know where it was in 2009.
- 15:13'cause I sold the Penske car and that was 975,000.
- 15:18So the car was going up still no matter what was going on in the world.
- 15:22Then Ian says in his head, well, I'll just double it and I'll go for 3.5.
- 15:28At the time, Ian had some other stuff going on in his life.
- 15:32He was in the middle of construction on a house, and you know,
- 15:35there was some issues there.
- 15:36And Ian said, look, if I'm gonna free up a car, I'm gonna have to free up a car.
- 15:40Only if this guy gives me some number that's outta this world.
- 15:42So he doubled it.
- 15:44And he said 25.
- 15:46And you know, that's a big number.
- 15:47So I wanna, I wanna bring that up because it's very important considering what
- 15:51happened in the Bachman collection today.
- 15:53If people say that, okay, a car is worth an, let's say an
- 15:58enzo's worth seven, 8 million.
- 16:00But somebody said, well, I'm not gonna sell the car.
- 16:03Well, if somebody gave you 16 million, 17 million for the car, would you sell it?
- 16:08Sure, I'd sell it.
- 16:09That's kind of what happened with the Enzo, because it was a real unique car.
- 16:14You're not gonna find another one like it.
- 16:16Yeah, and that's why these numbers did these moonshots, you know, you
- 16:19had a lot of people out there on the internet saying, oh, it was for charity
- 16:23and that's why it was like that.
- 16:24I said, absolutely not.
- 16:25Yeah, yeah.
- 16:26Clarify that.
- 16:26Yeah, it was a standard auction.
- 16:28The cars were sold through Mecu Auctions.
- 16:30It wasn't a charity to be a charity.
- 16:32The purchaser has to purchase the cars from the Bachman Foundation.
- 16:37Now they have a foundation.
- 16:39Most people, when you're gonna go ahead and take in this kind of money, I mean the
- 16:42sale brought in with fees, $125 million.
- 16:46Of course, they're gonna send up.
- 16:47They're gonna sell most times, not always, but they set up a foundation.
- 16:52The Bachman Foundation is, you know, based in the Eastern Tennessee, and they're
- 16:55gonna do a lot of good things to help different people and different things.
- 16:58You know, they wanna do some stuff with, you know, some technicians,
- 17:01they wanna build a, I think a school, you know, to help, you know, young
- 17:04mechanics and stuff like this.
- 17:06So, I mean, you know, they have a bunch of different things in their
- 17:08mission statement, but the point was.
- 17:11It's a little bit of a tax shelter for them, but the cars were not sold
- 17:15directly from the Bachman Foundation to whoever you know, Mr. John A.
- 17:20Smith who purchased the car, he purchased the car from Mecom Auctions.
- 17:25It was thrown out there and it was a few people that put it out there,
- 17:28and even people that worked at other auction houses, and I. Quick
- 17:31to go ahead and reach out to them.
- 17:32I said, look, you gotta clarify this, and sure enough, they edited the
- 17:35post or they, you know, we took it down or whatever it was, but it got
- 17:39cleared up very, very quickly because everyone's like, this is impossible.
- 17:43Then, then you had, you know, a whole other load of people
- 17:47saying, oh, you know, is it real?
- 17:49You know, one thing about a no reserve auction, you know when you have a reserve
- 17:53auction, it's real easy to run up.
- 17:55The number on a no reserve auction.
- 17:57Well, you have an internet bid or here or there.
- 17:59Like you really don't know because they're trying to run it up.
- 18:01But when you have a no reserve auction, it's like musical chairs.
- 18:05If you go ahead, you better make sure you have a seat when the music stops.
- 18:08Yeah.
- 18:08So you can't go ahead and play that game, especially when you start
- 18:11getting in these high numbers.
- 18:13There was two people on the room now, one of the people that was bidding pretty
- 18:17high up because it takes two to run it up.
- 18:20So obviously if there's one guy paying it, regardless of whoever he is, and
- 18:24there's a lot of people that had comments, well, this guy's this and his business
- 18:27isn't real, or whatever the case may be.
- 18:30There was still a guy right behind him running it up.
- 18:32And the guy that was behind him is a authorized Ferrari
- 18:35dealer in North America.
- 18:36Oh, really?
- 18:37So, oh yeah.
- 18:38And, and they were the underbidder on, you know, a bunch of the cars and
- 18:42obviously they had a well to do client.
- 18:44Pretty well known client that wanted these cars.
- 18:48Again, this goes back to the original conversation.
- 18:50When you get a guy that's a multimillionaire, maybe a billionaire,
- 18:54in this case, I believe he is a billionaire, and he says, look,
- 18:58I don't wanna know anything.
- 18:59I want those cars.
- 19:01And in his mind, he pulls out a number.
- 19:04He says, look, I'm gonna drop 30, 40, 50, 70, whatever the number is, million.
- 19:10I want these cars.
- 19:11He's willing to do it.
- 19:12He's saying to himself, where am I ever gonna get a chance again to
- 19:15see all these cars in one place?
- 19:17Yeah.
- 19:17That I can get 'em.
- 19:18And regardless of, you know, whether he super loved the look of them, there was
- 19:22a lot of people that said to me, wow.
- 19:25I saw these cars in the catalog.
- 19:27I saw 'em in the video and you know, we had all the big bright lights on 'em,
- 19:30and the colors were really exploding when they saw them in real life,
- 19:34they were like, wow, they're not as vibrant and not as bright as I thought.
- 19:38And you know, a lot of times people looked at 'em and they
- 19:40said, you know, it actually works.
- 19:42And I thought I wouldn't like it.
- 19:44There was a lot of that.
- 19:45Yeah.
- 19:46I, I honest to God, there was probably more people.
- 19:49That came up to us and said, I didn't think I was gonna like this car in person.
- 19:53And it's really cool.
- 19:54There was a lot of people that said that, you know, it was good.
- 19:57And people said to me, they said, what's your favorite car?
- 20:00And I would turn around and point at the 2 7 5.
- 20:02You know, it was funny, I saw Rick Hendrick the night before and we chatted
- 20:06and I said, look, if you're gonna buy one car in the collection, that's the car.
- 20:09And Andy Thomas, he has a 10 10th club, and Andy Thomas works for him.
- 20:13And Andy actually was my rep. At Ferrari North America over 20 years ago, and
- 20:17actually Andy and I were the first two to see the Bachman Enzo when it
- 20:21came into the us and I actually still have the email from 2004 when the car
- 20:26came into the US when it got unloaded.
- 20:28So look, for us, it was like full circle, Andy we're, we're staring at the end zone.
- 20:32I said, Hey, you remember the two of us staring at that car?
- 20:35And then we're turning our heads and he says, what's your favorite car?
- 20:38You know, there's 46 of them there.
- 20:39I said hands down the 2 75.
- 20:41Yeah, I think it was stunning.
- 20:43It was stunning car.
- 20:43Right.
- 20:44So there's 16 of them, you know.
- 20:45Well, that's the accepted number.
- 20:47There's no official number out of the factory because at that point
- 20:51in time, some of the bill sheets, they would mark if it was an
- 20:54alloy, and some of 'em they didn't.
- 20:55So the cars exist as an alloy, you know, their notes weren't super,
- 21:00super detailed at that point.
- 21:01There was a point.
- 21:03Where their notes weren't the super best, but you know, when you get
- 21:06into like a build sheet or you start to see the purchase order.
- 21:09If you have the original purchase order, it would show that the
- 21:12car was ordered as an alloy.
- 21:13That car was born as a fly yellow car, and it lived most of its time,
- 21:19uh, with one gentleman, and then it went to another guy, and then to Phil.
- 21:23Phil had the car restored by, uh, David Cart, who has since
- 21:26passed away during either right, during COVID or right after COVID.
- 21:31He was out of Virginia.
- 21:32And those three cars that we had on the stage, we had the chairs and Flair.
- 21:352 46 we had, um, the 2 75 TTB four.
- 21:40And then we had off to the right of that.
- 21:42We had the Luso.
- 21:43But that car for me, you know, when people ask me what was my
- 21:47favorite car, I said, the 2 75 GTB four Alloy was my favorite car.
- 21:51It's not even close.
- 21:52And then, you know, when I walked in the other room, I had Dana's 2 75 Nart.
- 21:56Which was sitting on in the other room.
- 21:58Right.
- 21:58So when you look at that car, and as much as I love the na, the 2
- 22:0375 GTB four alloy is, is just my favorite car, John, surely 2 75.
- 22:10NA is the ultimate rockstar.
- 22:12They made 10 cars, Dan car, the silver one is number nine, and the
- 22:17number two car is John Shirley's.
- 22:19And I was talking to John talking about the two 50 GTO and I
- 22:23saw John and we were chatting.
- 22:25That car lived legitimately a quarter mile from my high school for many,
- 22:31many, many, many years in New Jersey.
- 22:34And I used to see the car driving around all the time.
- 22:37And then as time goes on, the internet builds and you start doing your Google
- 22:41and you start looking things up.
- 22:42You say to yourself, man, I wonder what happened to that car.
- 22:46Sure enough, John surely has it.
- 22:48So when we, when we went up there to go see John and Dana and
- 22:51myself, we went to go put together the deal for the two 50 GTO.
- 22:55I saw the car.
- 22:55Now we're there to look at a two 50 GTO.
- 22:58I'm all over the narc because me growing up, I'm like, Hey, this is
- 23:02the car I used to see all the time.
- 23:04So it's funny because you know, you see a car and you identify
- 23:07something about it, whether it was Oh, triggers trigger something.
- 23:10Right.
- 23:10And see, and, and for me, the other car that does that is the 3 0 8.
- 23:14So for me, the 3 0 8 triggers at big time, growing up watching
- 23:18Magnum pi, I remember watching it.
- 23:20Yeah.
- 23:20You know, and it was like, uh, for whatever night, it was like Thursday
- 23:22night, you know, Magnum PI would go on and it was a weekly show.
- 23:25And then for me, fast forward.
- 23:28I joined the Marines when I'm 17.
- 23:30I get stationed in Hawaii, you know, I know where the Higgins, you know Robin?
- 23:35Rob, Robin Masters.
- 23:36The state is, you know, it's in Wyman.
- 23:40Fast forward and I'm the general manager of the store in Hawaii.
- 23:44So when they did the new version of Magna Pi, I would see the Ferrari,
- 23:48you know, with the Robin one plate.
- 23:50You know, we were doing the service on the cars that they used for the show.
- 23:53So it's so funny for me, like full circle, you know, for that, that car.
- 23:59And then, you know, the last but not least car for me was, was the 2 8 8 GTO.
- 24:03Because I, you know, I mentioned to you on the earlier podcast growing up, I grew
- 24:07up with a family that was really involved with Benjamin Moore paint and they, uh,
- 24:12they went to the Ferrari Club Nationals every year and they, they had Ferraris.
- 24:16We would go to the national and we would show the cars.
- 24:18And this was going all the way back in the 1980s.
- 24:21And I remember going to Watkins Glen in 1984, and they had the first, maybe
- 24:27it was 85, but I think, I mean maybe it was 85, it might have been 1985.
- 24:31I forget what year it was, but they had the RY Club National at the Glen.
- 24:34We were, you know, watching the two eight A GTO that was there, and they had the
- 24:39first tester in the United States come.
- 24:42And that was a big deal for the tester because remember.
- 24:45The BB five two and the BB five 12 I, that car was never, you know,
- 24:51homologated for the United States.
- 24:52Yeah, they were federalized.
- 24:52Yeah.
- 24:53Right.
- 24:53The cars that came in were the old quote unquote gray market cars.
- 24:56And you know, you would see them and then it wasn't like today where you
- 24:59could say, listen, let's look on the internet and see what the differences are.
- 25:02The car would show up and we were like, okay, it has a body color bottom, but
- 25:06the other ones have a black bottom.
- 25:07Right.
- 25:08So you know, that was an option that came out on the real later bbs.
- 25:11So it was like all that different stuff and you would see it
- 25:13in the Bachman collection.
- 25:14So when we were looking at the Bachman collection, like I can identify
- 25:18with every car, like I could see the difference between a BB 512.
- 25:21I could see the difference with a BB 512, I, you know, whatever the
- 25:25car was, I can quickly look and they say, well, the cars are the same.
- 25:29I said, no, they're not the same.
- 25:29They're like, oh, the interior's different.
- 25:31I'm like, no, they're two different cars.
- 25:33This one was delivered to a German market.
- 25:35Look at the grill, look at the lights, you know, behind the grill.
- 25:38Yeah.
- 25:38Market lights and, and Right.
- 25:39And then people would look and they say, oh my God, I didn't even notice that.
- 25:43It was just a question of, you know, really educating people and,
- 25:46and, uh, and listen, I had a blast.
- 25:49Like I, we had such a great time during the week doing everything.
- 25:53It was really, really, really just an awesome week.
- 25:56I, I can't tell you how much fun we had and honestly, hats off to the Mecu crew.
- 26:01They were amazing.
- 26:02Brett, Dana, Dan, Brianne.
- 26:05I mean, look, the list just goes on and on and on.
- 26:07Like everybody there was there to help you.
- 26:09Just, you name it.
- 26:11Mike, uh, Harold.
- 26:12I mean, look, it just keeps going on and on and on.
- 26:15Everywhere I went to, they were just such an accommodating team.
- 26:18Even Dominic, the guy that runs the golf carts, you know,
- 26:21Hey, we need to grab somebody.
- 26:23Hey, we, we need to do this.
- 26:24Hey, we gotta grab this guy.
- 26:25I mean, like everybody, like, they were just awesome.
- 26:28Just an amazing team.
- 26:29And to do everything that they did from the beginning of October to have it to
- 26:34the market in 90 days, it was unheard of.
- 26:36Yeah, I've never seen anything like that.
- 26:39The presentation was just over the top.
- 26:42Yeah, it, it just, yeah, they nailed it.
- 26:43I can't, they nailed it.
- 26:44It just killed it.
- 26:45I mean, it was like nothing else I've ever seen recreating the garage upstairs.
- 26:49We had that little loft up on top.
- 26:51Yeah, I saw it.
- 26:52Yeah.
- 26:52And you know, we brought people up there and they would, and they would go
- 26:55through the archive and they'd say, Hey.
- 26:56And you know, the thing that, that we, including Marco, myself
- 26:59and Emiliano, we would see people and they'd be going through like
- 27:02multiple, multiple, multiple cars.
- 27:04And it was a little, probably a little strange to us.
- 27:07'cause we would say to them, Hey fellas, how are you?
- 27:08Good, good, good guys need help with anything?
- 27:10Like, nah, I'm good.
- 27:11You know, it was, you know, and you could see the big screens playing
- 27:14and it has me, Emiliano, and Marco.
- 27:17Like, if you watched a video, you could easily say.
- 27:20Wait a second.
- 27:20They're the guys that are in the video, they're talking about this.
- 27:23Maybe they know something that I don't know.
- 27:25Yeah, they might know a little something and we, you know, and we, they would look
- 27:29at me and, you know, the typical Italian phrase, there's no words talk, but they
- 27:33go like this, you know, they do this and, and, and we were laughing and I'd say.
- 27:38I don't know what to tell you.
- 27:39You know, we would talk to people, say, Hey fellas, you need any
- 27:42help on anything, let us know.
- 27:43You know, everybody doesn't want to, to show their hand or whether
- 27:46no, you know, they're, they're in the middle of looking at something.
- 27:48Maybe they don't want you to know who they're looking
- 27:50for or whatever the case is.
- 27:52But you know, we were like, Hey, listen, you know, we're here to
- 27:55help if you have any questions, if you wanna go through the car.
- 27:57And then it was the opposite on the other side.
- 27:59You had people show up and say, Hey, listen.
- 28:02I watched the videos online.
- 28:03I've been watching the stuff on YouTube.
- 28:05I love the video.
- 28:06Can you walk me through this car?
- 28:08Absolutely.
- 28:08And we would spend as much time as we needed.
- 28:10There was, there was people that we got there.
- 28:12There was one gentleman, he got there at 10:00 AM He left at four.
- 28:15Wow.
- 28:16And I was with him for six hours and I went through every single car.
- 28:21He took notes.
- 28:22I know for sure that he bit on a lot of cars.
- 28:24I'm not quite sure if he won anything, but I know he was in the race.
- 28:28Towards the end on a few of the cars.
- 28:30So look, it was enjoyable because again, it goes back to the
- 28:33beginning of the question, why did the cars do all these numbers?
- 28:35Yeah.
- 28:36'cause we took that time, we educated some people, they saw the value in the car.
- 28:40'cause there was people that even looked at the catalog and they'd say, you know,
- 28:43I went through it and it says, Hey, this is the last one for the us or this is
- 28:47the, you know, there was this many made in yellow or with this color combination.
- 28:51It's one of X amount.
- 28:52Yeah.
- 28:52Let me go ahead and run it through you.
- 28:54Let me show you something on it.
- 28:55And then they would look at the car and they might even be on that car.
- 28:58Look at the car next to it and say, I looked at this car and I didn't
- 29:02really think I'd like it, but you know, this is a really cool car.
- 29:05It it, it was kind of cool, like, you know, when I spoke to Tom Cabio, you
- 29:09know, from Garage 26, they got a great Instagram page and they're down in Miami.
- 29:13Yeah, I've been in his collection.
- 29:14That's unbelievable.
- 29:15Yeah.
- 29:16So he, he picked up a few cars, right?
- 29:18So he wound up at about four cars.
- 29:20You know, we were going through it and, and I knew the other guy, the
- 29:23guy outta Connecticut that was running against them, right, on those cars.
- 29:27So everybody thought that it was the same guys that were bidding on the
- 29:30same cars, which wasn't the case.
- 29:32There was multiple, multiple people.
- 29:34And then on the big cars, there was a group of guys.
- 29:38Then there was like, on the other stuff, like I said, like the three 40 eights.
- 29:41The three 20 eights they were trying to fill in.
- 29:43Then it was the vintage guys.
- 29:44You know guys that were chasing the Luso and the chairs and flares car.
- 29:48Then there was guys that were chasing just the bbs.
- 29:51There was a bunch of guys that just came in on the bbs.
- 29:53Then there was the guys that were saying, Hey, I already have a 2 8 8 GTO,
- 29:58but I want one that's like pristine.
- 30:01Yeah, so, so now one owner that mileage.
- 30:04Yeah, so now they're hoping, there was guys that had the car that were cheering
- 30:08that the car would keep going up because again, look, they have the car they
- 30:12may have bought in, who knows when.
- 30:14It could have been 10 years ago, it could have been 20 years ago.
- 30:17But there was people that bought in obviously considerably less
- 30:20and they were like, oh heck yeah.
- 30:22It's like go higher saying Hey, this is great because now how their this thing go.
- 30:27When, when people said to me at the very end, is there any cars that.
- 30:31I thought did less than what they were gonna do.
- 30:35And I said, yeah, there was one car in particular, the 1 6 6 mm. That car Yeah.
- 30:39That surprised me that, that somebody, somebody got a killer deal on that car
- 30:42because they paid, I think all in around 2 million bucks and it should have did.
- 30:47At least a million more.
- 30:48And I, you know, I chatted with Brian Ross about it and Brian's got an
- 30:51amazing collection and uh, you know, he's a Ferrari dealer up in Vancouver.
- 30:55And look, we're all friends, you know, we're all friends with each other.
- 30:57We were really, really surprised.
- 30:59Even Emiliano and Marco, we thought that the car was gonna do
- 31:02closer to 3 million or somewhere like up in that range, for sure.
- 31:05Again, there was people that expressed interest and I don't know if something
- 31:09was going on in their life or they just didn't get on the phone because
- 31:12there was people who did register.
- 31:14They got pre-authorized?
- 31:16Pre-approved?
- 31:16Yeah.
- 31:16You know, with their letters and didn't bid, and then there was people, wow.
- 31:20Who got there.
- 31:21They looked at the cars and then maybe they walked around and
- 31:24they said, Hey, you know what?
- 31:25I really love this.
- 31:275, 9, 9 Seperta.
- 31:29I, I love the car, but this color combo, the yellow and green, nah,
- 31:33it's just not me, but there's another one for sale in the auction.
- 31:36So Dana had over 125 Ferrari in the sale.
- 31:39Yeah.
- 31:39He had a, yeah.
- 31:40That was outstanding what they had outside of the Bachman collection as well.
- 31:44I mean, there was some blue chip stuff in there.
- 31:47Oh my god.
- 31:47Yeah.
- 31:48And then, you know, like the other Enzo, the, the RiNo car
- 31:51that came from Gerald Barnes.
- 31:52Yeah.
- 31:52Strong.
- 31:52So that car, that was another car Dana and I worked on together.
- 31:55Dana and I were.
- 31:56Chatting on the phone every single day.
- 31:58And that went back to, I don't know, either, I wanna say October or November.
- 32:02We were chatting about that.
- 32:03And Dana, in November I think it was, you know, we were trying to lock
- 32:06that thing up and Dana was saying to me, he said, Hey, you know, there's
- 32:09multiple cars in the package and we were chatting what we thought they
- 32:12were gonna do, and it was a paint.
- 32:14The sample nine 18, that was part of the package that Rick Hendrick got that car.
- 32:17Yeah.
- 32:18Again, the same players that were involved on the cars on Saturday, that
- 32:23car ran on Friday, the nine 18 fighter.
- 32:26It was the same guys that were in the same mix, but you know when they lose
- 32:30the day before, you know, they sleep on it and then they wake up and they say.
- 32:34I'm not losing on that Enzo.
- 32:36I don't care what it takes.
- 32:37So when you get a guy like that and his ego gets behind his, you know,
- 32:41behind the thought, now you're like, okay, listen, this is really gonna
- 32:44be, this is gonna be a horse race.
- 32:45Now this is really gonna go at it.
- 32:47And sure enough, that's what happened.
- 32:49But you know, case in point.
- 32:51People say, oh, it was just the Bachman cars, or whatever the case is.
- 32:54I say, okay, well then explain to me why the RiNo Enzo did the number it did.
- 32:59Because listen, if that car was regular red Rosa Corsa, it does millions less
- 33:04because Oh yeah, it's a more common car.
- 33:07Once you get into rare shades.
- 33:09It's one of 2, 3, 1, whatever the case may be.
- 33:13That's it.
- 33:14It's game on at that point.
- 33:16Yeah, and it's great to see that too.
- 33:17It just, it just validates, you know, especially doing, you know, you got
- 33:20your personalization and everything like that and yeah, some stuff might
- 33:22come out, might not be someone's taste, but it is someone's taste and
- 33:26just makes it that much more special as it compared to all the other ones.
- 33:29For sure.
- 33:29You know, especially if someone goes to the FCA meets stuff like that.
- 33:33They take that, they're not gonna be lined up like one, one after another to
- 33:36all the same color or anything like that.
- 33:38It's like, nope.
- 33:38We know who that is.
- 33:39We know where it came from.
- 33:40You know, just, it stands out.
- 33:41It makes it that much more special, which is great to see.
- 33:43You know, you take pride in that.
- 33:44We Did you take pride?
- 33:45Absolutely.
- 33:46We did a car, I don't know, I guess it was right around this time we were
- 33:50chatting and there was an F 12 and a 4 88 spider that were both done without paint.
- 33:56So if you remember the Mercury pilots.
- 33:59You know they're Mercury astronauts.
- 34:00Yeah.
- 34:00They had all aluminum, no paint Cobras, and then quickly Rathman
- 34:05Chevrolet, which isn't far from here.
- 34:07It was right down the road on the Space Coast.
- 34:09The, a lot of the astronauts at that time had Corvettes and they had some deal
- 34:13hooked up with Rathman and Jim Rathman won the Indianapolis 500 back in the
- 34:17fifties and he had a Chevrolet dealership.
- 34:19So I, I saw an article and I was flipping through a magazine and I saw an all
- 34:23aluminum Oprah from one of the astronauts.
- 34:26Then fast forward.
- 34:28I knew that there was an F 12 TDF that was done in the states that had no pain
- 34:33on it, and then there was obviously a a 4 8 8 spider that was done the same way.
- 34:37So sure enough, we did the same thing with an A 12 competency, ONA.
- 34:41My one client had it, we built it and he kept the car for a couple years.
- 34:46It was sitting at the dealership and another collector.
- 34:48Another gentleman that out of the New York area, originally he saw the car and
- 34:53uh, he's like, I gotta have that car.
- 34:55And at the time it was a world record and people are like, oh, you're nuts this,
- 34:59that, you know, you're paying crazy money.
- 35:01Well, here it is further down the road, you know, not quite a year
- 35:04later, the car probably went up 750,000 more than what he paid.
- 35:09And he paid like a world record.
- 35:11Yeah.
- 35:12For that car already.
- 35:13So his a 12 competition is worth tons of money, and it's an exact
- 35:19same mirror image of what happened in the Bachman collection.
- 35:23The Bachman collection, when you looked at that F 12 TDF.
- 35:26Okay.
- 35:27That was one of the cars that people saw in person.
- 35:29They said, wow, it's not as wild as I thought it would be.
- 35:32Again, when you look at a car like that, and then, you know, we put so much time
- 35:36into detailing, you know, we brought in a gentleman named Squeaky, Pete.
- 35:39Pete Wedge, he's outta Miami area, really well known detailer.
- 35:42He brought his team, his brother Sam, and a few of the boys down.
- 35:46They all showed up there, and I'm telling you right now, they camped out and
- 35:49we had those cars looking like glass.
- 35:50Oh yeah.
- 35:51I mean, they, they were like glass.
- 35:52I mean, we, we made, we really, really worked on 'em as if we
- 35:55were doing concor restorations.
- 35:57And listen, he could have spent even more time on each car and really made
- 36:00them look like legitimate like glass.
- 36:03But.
- 36:03They looked unbelievable and people were coming in and they said, man,
- 36:07I've never seen cars puff like that.
- 36:08And Dana's guys had the light pop in the right way.
- 36:12You know when the cars went on stage, if you just watch those videos and
- 36:15Dana ran through 4,000 plus cars, there's no cars that look better.
- 36:20Shine wise, there's cars, you're right, there's cars that look,
- 36:22there's cars that looked really, really close when you looked at the
- 36:25Yanko collection and some other cars.
- 36:27Those cars were spot on too, but when they went up on that stage, especially
- 36:31like the older cars, the 2 75, and the Luso with the bani wheels and the chrome
- 36:35bumpers, when those cars hit the stage, I.
- 36:38They looked electric.
- 36:39Like I was just sitting up on the stage and there was a bunch of canid shots that
- 36:43people sent to me, of me looking, and I'm up there and I, and I'm leaning over.
- 36:48I saw, saw, I saw on the top of the block and I'm smiling and I'm like, yeah.
- 36:51They said, these cars look like movie stars.
- 36:53Like it just.
- 36:54Yeah, they just looked so perfect and that's why they brought the money.
- 36:57So I tell people it wasn't just one thing or one bidder.
- 37:01That helps obviously, but there was so much the road to the sale that
- 37:05got those cars to bring it there.
- 37:07The storyline that we did, the videos, the whole Mecu team getting
- 37:11the catalogs made the way they did the catalog was absolutely amazing.
- 37:15The data that was in there, you know, the online presence, you
- 37:19know, MECU doing it, us doing it, you know, the dealership doing it.
- 37:23Just everything, you know, and, and we, everybody did their part.
- 37:26And then it was like, okay, when are we gonna get a chance
- 37:29to find another car like this?
- 37:30And believe me, a lot of people sat back and said, I've been in this
- 37:33business a long time, I've never seen anything like this in my entire
- 37:36life of just Ferraris that are this cool, this eclectic, or whatever the
- 37:40case may have been in this condition.
- 37:43With this mileage single owner?
- 37:46Um, on a lot of the cases, yeah.
- 37:47Not obviously.
- 37:48Obviously, the ones that, it was unbelievable.
- 37:49I won't see it again.
- 37:50It probably won't see, see it again, won't, and listen, I've been doing
- 37:5330 years, never saw it ever happen.
- 37:55So for me it was really, really special to be part of it.
- 37:59And obviously, you know, develop a, a relationship friendship with
- 38:02you and a lot of other people.
- 38:03It was just, honestly, when I look back, if I look back and I say,
- 38:07okay, look, you're gonna do your testimonial on your career and say,
- 38:10you know, what was like the highlight for sure that's gonna be up there.
- 38:14Oh, absolutely.
- 38:15It was right there.
- 38:16That definitely up there.
- 38:17There's two also I wanna touch on because I, I absolutely love them.
- 38:21The yellow one brought no good strong money, but the green one
- 38:24that really opened up eyes in those, the 2 360 Challenge Rad.
- 38:28Oh my God.
- 38:29Yeah.
- 38:29So the 360 Challenge rad people would look at the first one, he went all out.
- 38:34So it was like, you know when we looked at like the 5 9 9 SA perata and
- 38:38we looked at the 5 9 9 GTO and even.
- 38:41The 360 Challenge Rad.
- 38:42The yellow one.
- 38:43It was almost like if you said, okay, look, here's an option list and these
- 38:46are all the little things we can do.
- 38:49It was almost like when you see that one, it's like select all that's,
- 38:52you know, it's like, okay, but they didn't, they didn't have that back then.
- 38:55Right.
- 38:56So it was almost like select all and that's when you know, you know, you
- 39:00would look and you would say, okay, he did every single thing, like the
- 39:03headlight buckets on the 360 challenge tri, all the little detail work.
- 39:07And you saw the same thing in the 16 s, but the green challenge triology.
- 39:11Yeah.
- 39:12God, that was gorgeous.
- 39:12Was That was another one of my favorites.
- 39:14So yeah, that was in my top five.
- 39:16So when I would look at that car and I said to myself.
- 39:19Oh my God.
- 39:20I said, this car is just an absolute rockstar.
- 39:23You know, when you saw it all polished up, people were going crazy for that car.
- 39:27And that car did, I'm Monster.
- 39:29Monster number.
- 39:30Yeah, monster number.
- 39:31Was that only Chara in Green that produced or is there any other No, I, I think
- 39:35there was two in green, but I'm not sure.
- 39:37Sure if there was another one in that exact shade.
- 39:39'cause there was 1300 cars that were produced.
- 39:42But I gotta get the catalog.
- 39:44It's, you know, it's funny, I went through the catalog and I
- 39:46knew the thing inside and out when we were producing the catalog.
- 39:49'cause we were constantly going back and editing and, you
- 39:52know, let's double check this.
- 39:53So, you know, this one has a plastic case certification, this one doesn't.
- 39:57But on that particular car, the seats that were in the car came with that car
- 40:01came with two sets of seats as well.
- 40:03So the original seats in there.
- 40:05The red in them with the red seats, although they're very, very cool.
- 40:09It had a little bit of that Christmas tree look, you know you
- 40:11had green car with the red seats.
- 40:14Yeah.
- 40:14You know, and then Phil got another set of seats and he ordered another
- 40:18set of seats and he went ahead and he continued on what he wanted to do as
- 40:22far as the green that was in there.
- 40:24And candidly it looked great.
- 40:25And look, it was colors that were offered at the time.
- 40:28You had to go ahead and do an extra comp area request.
- 40:31But they were alcantara colors that were available at the time.
- 40:34Ferrari at that point in time.
- 40:36That's really when they were switching over from the original
- 40:40RIA TI program, and then they were moving into what they called atelier.
- 40:46Atelier became tailor made, and then it started to build more and more and more.
- 40:52As time went on, you would actually see, you know, how they evolved and you know, a
- 40:57lot of the other brands started to do it.
- 40:59Bentley was probably, you know, I always talk about it.
- 41:01Bentley was probably like the originators of this program.
- 41:03Their Moller program and their Moller division is unbelievable.
- 41:06And then, you know, you had Rolls Royce doing it, you know, with their
- 41:09Beast Folk program and you saw all the top companies in the world.
- 41:14Starting to do it.
- 41:15And you know, as time went on, people would start to do the
- 41:18customization and it's a huge, huge, huge, huge business now for Ferrari.
- 41:22Massive, massive.
- 41:23It's massive, massive, massive, massive.
- 41:25And you know, I tell people you would see Dreamlines on Phil's cars.
- 41:29Dreamlines are like pretty common now on cars.
- 41:32But Phil was like the originator.
- 41:34You had dream lines on the wheels.
- 41:35Even their FXX, which who customizes a race car.
- 41:40It was the only one that was originally produced in yellow.
- 41:43There's been a few guys that when they did the EVO upgrade or they sent the cars
- 41:46back, now that they've upgraded, I think there's three yellow ones that are out
- 41:49there flowing around, but two or three.
- 41:52But Phil's is the only original one.
- 41:54And that also was a car that was a deal.
- 41:56'cause I thought at $6 million.
- 41:58Yeah, I did too.
- 41:59Yeah, that, that, that was a good deal for that car.
- 42:02I'm not sure who got the car.
- 42:03You know, I, I haven't gone through the whole list to see who the purchasers were,
- 42:07but I'm happy for everybody who got 'em.
- 42:09And there's been people who have reached out to me at the dealership and have
- 42:11said, Hey man, I know that you were up there and I saw you quickly and I didn't
- 42:15get a chance to chat with you, but I knew, obviously I had the catalog and
- 42:18it's says Prancing horse in Nashville.
- 42:20And you know, I just wanted to chat with you about the car and I was on
- 42:23the phone with a gentleman yesterday.
- 42:24He bought actually the F 40.
- 42:26I was telling him some stuff and he was like, floored.
- 42:29He's like, oh, you're kidding me?
- 42:30I said, no, and I said, I said, when did you see the, I said, when
- 42:34did you see the, the collection?
- 42:35He said, you know what?
- 42:36He said, I saw the collection years ago.
- 42:39I met Phil and Martha Bachman years ago.
- 42:42I knew who they were and I knew how well they took care of the cars,
- 42:45and there was a lot of that too.
- 42:46There was people who knew the bachmans or competed against them at an FCA
- 42:50event or at Caino or whatever it was.
- 42:53More times than not, they lost out to them, you know, that their
- 42:55cars were always super pristine.
- 42:58They said, you know what?
- 42:58We lost out to them, but now's my chance to get in.
- 43:01I always said, Hey, if that car ever comes for sale, I wanna make a run at it.
- 43:05And you know, we, we had calls, it was nonstop.
- 43:07Dana had calls, we had calls at the dealership, Hey, I
- 43:09really wanna buy that car.
- 43:11Okay, but I want you to pull it out of the collection.
- 43:14Oh, okay, no problem.
- 43:16What do you wanna offer?
- 43:17Yeah.
- 43:17And they would say to me, I'm gonna make a bid.
- 43:20That's, you know, like an astronomical number.
- 43:22Okay.
- 43:23What are you gonna bid?
- 43:24And they would say, I'm gonna go ahead and bid.
- 43:26Let's say like on the Enzo, I'm gonna bid $8 million.
- 43:31We knew that it was definitely gonna do more than that.
- 43:34'cause you know, we were chatting with a lot of people and I'd say,
- 43:36now you're a little short bud.
- 43:38And I'd say, okay, nine.
- 43:40And I'd say, no, no, no.
- 43:41It was short, buddy.
- 43:42I'd say the first, the first number starts with a one.
- 43:44I said we already, we already had people beforehand that were saying, look, I think
- 43:49the car is gonna do 10 to 12 million.
- 43:50And then.
- 43:51You had people for us to pull a car outta the cell, or at least we couldn't.
- 43:55We'd have to approach the family and the foundation for us to pull a car.
- 43:59It would have to be some crazy number.
- 44:01And he said, well, what's crazy?
- 44:03And I said, north of 15, the guy's exact words were, you're dreaming the Carl.
- 44:08I'll never do that.
- 44:09I said, well look, guess what we're gonna have to see.
- 44:11Or did 17 and change?
- 44:13Yeah.
- 44:13Changed almost 18 million.
- 44:14Yeah.
- 44:14So, and, and again, this is even me saying it, if you would've told me that
- 44:19the car was gonna do that number, I would've been just like that same guy.
- 44:21I would've said, you're crazy car's never gonna do that number.
- 44:25But it did it, and it took two people to go at it to get to that number.
- 44:30Yeah, everyone was prior to it, you know, 10, 12.
- 44:32Yeah, I like that.
- 44:33Which I was like, yeah, that's maybe a little bit more, but hey, it takes
- 44:35two to tango and they start jacking that down and going, which options?
- 44:39See?
- 44:39'cause I mean, the excitement in the room was phenomenal.
- 44:41It was just fantastic to see.
- 44:42It was, it was unbelievable.
- 44:44It honestly was, it really was unbelievable.
- 44:46Real quick on the two 50 GTO.
- 44:48I thought it went right where it should have been.
- 44:50It was fantastic.
- 44:51But the one cool thing was is David Lee is the, uh, new owner of that, which
- 44:55is fantastic 'cause and he loves to exercise and show his cars like that.
- 44:58So I think that ownership, how he goes about it, the same as
- 45:01John did showcase it with people, shared it and everything like that.
- 45:04So I think it was awesome to see that he was, ended up with it.
- 45:07For sure.
- 45:08And David, you know, it's funny, you know, 'cause when you look at David's
- 45:10collection, it's red and yellow, right?
- 45:12So I, I said, well the car's already been yellow.
- 45:14Let's just hope, I mean, it's already been red.
- 45:17Let's hope that he doesn't make it yellow.
- 45:19Yeah.
- 45:19But it was, uh, you know, it, it was really a lot of fun and you know,
- 45:24it, you know, it was going back and forth and you saw the famous photo
- 45:27of Dana with the hats down sideways.
- 45:29Yep.
- 45:29You know, when he's negotiating with, with Kevin, who was the broker
- 45:33that was helping him in the sale.
- 45:34So, you know, you could see, um, you know, they were trying to get it over the
- 45:38finish line, and it was one of those deals that, you know, when people say to me
- 45:42like, what do you feel about the number?
- 45:43I said, I thought it was a little light, but not by like a crazy number because
- 45:48look, it was a right hand drive car.
- 45:50If we were in a right hand drive country, it probably would've helped considerably.
- 45:53But in our case, you know, a lot of people, you know, it's
- 45:56like throwing a baseball.
- 45:57If you're, I'm, you know, I'm, I'm, I'm truly ambidextrous, you know, I'm, I
- 46:00do things left-handed and right-handed.
- 46:02For people who aren't that way.
- 46:04If you get in a car and when they try to shift, it's almost
- 46:07like trying to throw a baseball.
- 46:08It's almost like, oh, that's so awkward.
- 46:10It's, yeah, it's very awkward.
- 46:11Right?
- 46:11So I've been with people who, and they're like, I can't do that.
- 46:15I just can't imagine doing it.
- 46:16So mentally they get themselves out of it.
- 46:18Like right off the bat they're like, yeah, I don't think I can do that.
- 46:22The flip side to that is the engine wasn't original.
- 46:24But then again, you know, look, a lot of engines weren't original on a lot of cars.
- 46:29Even some of the two 50 GTOs have had some pretty, you know, rough stories.
- 46:33Them, I mean, there's cars that have been in accidents.
- 46:35Drivers were even killed in know, killed them.
- 46:37Yep.
- 46:37One or two of the cars.
- 46:38Right.
- 46:39So yeah, there was far that, but the car had a great story,
- 46:42obviously with John Coombs and how it had the vents on the hood.
- 46:45The car came out of the factor, like the rest of them with
- 46:48the two vents on the side.
- 46:49And then after they, the car had an accident and then there was
- 46:51some sheet metal work done and they added the third vent on the
- 46:55side and the vents on the hood.
- 46:56And you know, the car was mainly raced only in the uk so it didn't do
- 47:01the, you know, international tour.
- 47:02It didn't go to Lamont.
- 47:03Target.
- 47:04Flo and what have you.
- 47:05Didn't do any of that.
- 47:06The car really was limited to, you know, it did a lot of
- 47:09racing at the time in Goodwood.
- 47:11But you know, it had an interesting story about, you know, Jaguar
- 47:13reverse engineering the car and, you know, they loved it and it helped
- 47:17them develop the e type further.
- 47:19It was a great car, you know, I mean, it just, yeah, it had a great story.
- 47:22John was amazing with it.
- 47:24John took the car and John used the car for, um, 25 plus years.
- 47:29He bought the car in 1999.
- 47:31He had a, you know, he took it everywhere.
- 47:33I mean, whether it was in the uk, the car was on these tours in Italy.
- 47:37He had car tours that he did in Europe.
- 47:38He took the cars and he raced it at Laguna and different track
- 47:41events in North America took the car to Pebble, you name it.
- 47:45Yeah.
- 47:45So I think, I think David, to your point, is gonna do similar.
- 47:48And continue a long ownership history, not just, you know, a couple years
- 47:52move it on, he'll be another one that's gonna keep it 10, 15, 20 years.
- 47:56So that, that's what's awesome to see about that as well.
- 47:59So, you know.
- 47:59Absolutely.
- 48:00That's good stuff.
- 48:01But hey, I appreciate you coming on.
- 48:03Yeah, we're gonna definitely get you on a lot more and we're gonna do some
- 48:05other fun stuff somewhere down the road.
- 48:07We gotta start doing some more things together, so.
- 48:08Right.
- 48:09No, I appreciate it.
- 48:10It's been fun.
- 48:10I appreciate it and I'm looking forward to the next one.
- 48:13Yeah, state travels through, uh, retro mobile and uh, going over to the uk That's
- 48:17gonna be a lot of fun there as well.
- 48:18So enjoy your time and again, appreciate it and see you next time.
- 48:22Alright bud.
- 48:23Look forward to it.
- 48:23See you guys soon.

- 50:00You know, the last 12 months have been great.
- 50:02Dana just actually was calling and um, I said, Hey, I'm jumping on this podcast.
- 50:06So I said I gotta ring you back.
- 50:08But you know, we gotta catch up on.
- 50:10Everything that's been going on, because the last couple days I
- 50:13flew back up to Nashville to get some stuff at the store done.
- 50:16And now we're, we're, we're, I'm on my way to retro, so I'm gonna stop in, in, uh,
- 50:21London and, you know, just do a pit stop, like I said, at, you know, at Red Bull.
- 50:25And obviously to stop at McLaren.
- 50:28'cause uh, you know, we have a client, I have a client with me who is, um,
- 50:32you know, a client of both of them.
- 50:33So I said, okay, well, yeah.
- 50:35We'll do a pit stop while we're on, going on over and then
- 50:37off to Paris on Wednesday.
- 50:40And then Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, they got an
- 50:42RM auction that's over there.
- 50:44So that's on Wednesday.
- 50:45And then, uh, before you know it, you're on a plane, you're coming back and,
- 50:49you know, getting ready for the next event, which is, uh, caino in palm.
- 50:54It's just like a blur, you know?
- 50:55I mean, last year I did something like 150 flights total for the year or so.
- 51:01It's good age for Caino.
- 51:02Being at the Boca now, I mean, I'm, yeah, and I think it's gonna be good.
- 51:05Yeah.
- 51:05Yeah.
- 51:05It's gonna be good.
- 51:06I think, I think it's better that, you know, when you looked at the
- 51:09lawn at, at the Breakers, you know, you're always limited to that one
- 51:12green that was right out front.
- 51:13So they, they were smart about it.
- 51:15They have a lot more space at Boca Raton, but I think they're still limited.
- 51:19They're somewhere around 175 cars, give or take, and they could have obviously went.
- 51:24Probably double that they got enough space to do it, but they're smart
- 51:28because, you know, you still wanna keep it, I don't wanna say intimate like it
- 51:31is in, um, you know, when you look at the event that's in Modina, or if you
- 51:35look at the one that's in the Middle East, it's a great event, but it is, the
- 51:39field is definitely somewhat limited.
- 51:41Whereas in the US that's the original event.
- 51:43It started obviously at the Breakers, you know.
- 51:46You know, many, many years ago, and it's been, you know, an amazing
- 51:49event over the years, but now when you look at it, it's different.
- 51:53You know, it, it was, it was such an intimate event for many, many years.
- 51:56And now when I look at it, I, I, you know, I don't wanna say it's got like that Las
- 52:00Vegas feel, but it's got a lot of the glitz and glamor and, and candidly, I
- 52:04went to the Las Vegas Concord this year.
- 52:07That's one the up quick.
- 52:08Yeah.
- 52:09And I really, really feel it's got that Las Vegas pizazz behind it.
- 52:14Anywhere you book, you know, you go to Palm Beach, you know, and you know,
- 52:17I haven't been to Boca for an event.
- 52:19I've been to the Boca Raton.
- 52:20But you know, you go and you wanna go out to dinner, the restaurants at the
- 52:23hotel where like, you know, maxed out.
- 52:25If, unless you made reservations way in advance, sort of like pebble, you know,
- 52:29you go and you're saying, Hey, what do you guys feel like eating tonight?
- 52:32They're like, Hey, let's go for fish.
- 52:34Okay, let's call a couple.
- 52:35No, we're totally sold out.
- 52:37Nope, we're totally sold out.
- 52:38Whereas in Vegas, they're so used to seeing, you know, 40 million tourists a
- 52:42year, no matter what you want it to do.
- 52:44You know, you pick up the phone, it's say, Hey, what do you guys wanna do?
- 52:46Yeah, we got a table come in like 15 minutes.
- 52:49Yeah.
- 52:49You know, and all the casinos have restaurants and they're top flight
- 52:52restaurants, you know, it's over the top.
- 52:55So for us it was awesome.
- 52:56And normally all the stuff that totally stresses you out.
- 52:59Where you get there and you say, oh damn, you know, I'm gonna have to
- 53:03go ahead and get in the car and you know, we're gonna get over there.
- 53:07We're gonna sit in, you know, crazy traffic.
- 53:09I mean, it was just like, it's Vegas, right?
- 53:10You're like, okay, this is Jump in an Uber, go over there.
- 53:13It was real easy.
- 53:14You could walk the strip if you wanted to go somewhere else,
- 53:17get out and stretch your legs.
- 53:19It was awesome.
- 53:19The weather's super consistent.
- 53:21Obviously at that time of the year, the days were like 80 degrees.
- 53:25There's no humidity.
- 53:27You know, it's, you're feeling good.
- 53:28The nights were a little cool.
- 53:30It was okay though.
- 53:31You know, it was good to just, you had a light jacket on.
- 53:33You're walking around.
- 53:33Actually it was warmer in Las Vegas than it is in the summertime in trouble.
- 53:38Yeah.
- 53:38But um, yeah, so we had some fun.
- 53:41But it was a good time.
- 53:42It was enjoyable.
- 53:43Yeah, it was, it was all good.
- 53:45So cool.
- 53:45Good things hap happy days.
- 53:47Yeah, no, definitely man.
- 53:48It's, it's great to see where everything's going.
- 53:50You know, it's gonna keep going, you know, it's just got everything.
- 53:52Just the energy is just phenomenal getting in everywhere.
- 53:56It's like, it's fantastic to see, 'cause it's just people putting together these
- 53:59great events, really putting thought into it and everything like that as well.
- 54:02So it's really good to see.
- 54:04So it's exciting stuff.
