- 0:16Kids Learning Lab, we're going to explore prehistory.
- 0:20Prehistory is all history before humans started writing history.
- 0:24This is the 7th episode in our Kids Learning Lab History
- 0:27series. You can listen to all the
- 0:29episodes by visiting Kids Learning lab.com/history series.
- 0:33The link is in the description. Also, if you're listening to
- 0:36this as the audio only version on podcast platforms, you can
- 0:39watch a video version by going to Spotify or YouTube and
- 0:42searching for Kids Learning Lab. The video is more fun since we
- 0:46show pictures. We can learn about prehistory by
- 0:49finding fossils, artifacts, cave paintings, and tools.
- 0:54Here's an example of a fossil from prehistory which looks like
- 0:57it comes from a human like species.
- 0:59Archaeologists have found lots of fossils which help us learn
- 1:02more about our history. This fossil in particular is
- 1:05from a famous find of humans called Lucy.
- 1:09Lucy comes from a species of hominin called Australopithecus.
- 1:13Here's an example of a cave painting.
- 1:16Early Cavemen painted on cave walls using animal blood, coal,
- 1:20and a mixture of other pigments to create paint.
- 1:24This image is from a cave in France.
- 1:27You can see drawings of bulls. Let's now learn about the
- 1:30different periods of prehistory. The first period is called the
- 1:34Paleolithic period. People were hunter gatherers,
- 1:38which means they haunted for animals and gathered plants.
- 1:41Humans made simple stone tools. Here's a collection of different
- 1:44stone tools from the prehistoric period.
- 1:47People learned how to take control of fire too.
- 1:51Now let's go to the Mesolithic period, also known as the Middle
- 1:54Stone Age. It lasted from 10,000 BCE to
- 1:588000 BCE. People started to create
- 2:01settlements and start fishing. Next, the Neolithic period when
- 2:06farming started, began. People discovered agriculture.
- 2:11People in the Middle East farmed wheat, barley and peas.
- 2:15People near China farmed in rice fields, and people in South
- 2:19America farmed lots of corn. People domesticated animals and
- 2:23people created permanent villages.
- 2:26A good example of this is the remains of Kadal Huyuk, a
- 2:29settlement in Turkey, which you can see below.
- 2:32These are the excavations which were recently completed and we
- 2:34can see into the lives of ancient humans.
- 2:39Now let's talk about the Bronze and Iron Ages.
- 2:42These are the last periods of prehistory.
- 2:45In the Bronze and Iron ages, people discovered metal, a
- 2:48powerful material that you could use to build strong objects.
- 2:52Stronger tools and weapons were made from metals like bronze and
- 2:55iron. Early cities formed during this
- 2:58time period. Trade between different cities
- 3:01started to grow. People started to write in
- 3:03Mesopotamia using symbols called cuneiform.
- 3:08These were simple shapes, triangles, and lines that were
- 3:11used for writing in ancient Mesopotamia.
- 3:14It allowed them to express their thoughts in writing.
- 3:18If you want to learn more, you can listen to our episode about
- 3:20ancient River Valley civilizations For more
- 3:23information. Societies in villages became
- 3:26more organized with people leading as leaders and also
- 3:29having warriors and traders order in villages led to later
- 3:34social order. In later civilizations, large
- 3:38mud, brick or stone structures were built.
- 3:41A famous example is Stonehenge in England.
- 3:44No one really knows why these giant stones were built, but
- 3:47archaeologists think it could have have religious or
- 3:50astronomical purposes. Bronze weapons made armies
- 3:54stronger and more powerful, which allowed people to conquer
- 3:57new lands. Here's a picture of swords from
- 4:01Central Europe. During the Bronze Age, cities
- 4:03became more fortified with towers and walls.
- 4:06And here's an image of a British hill Fort dug into the hill.
- 4:10This is also from the Bronze and Iron Ages.
- 4:14This is where the time period of prehistory ends and the period
- 4:17of early history begins. If you want to continue the
- 4:21timeline, you could listen to our episode on ancient River
- 4:23Valley civilizations in which we talk about India, China, Egypt,
- 4:28and Mesopotamia. Or if you want to continue the
- 4:31timeline further, you can listen to our Ancient Rome and Greece
- 4:34episodes or listen to our History of the Universe episode.
- 4:37For even more fun, our next episode will be about the 1849
- 4:42California Gold Rush. It'll also be a video episode.
