Latest / DISGRACELAND / Justin Bieber: Murder Plots, Drag Racing, and Deportation Threats
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Disgraceland as a production of Double Elvis. The stories about
- 0:13Speaker 1: Justin Bieber are insane. He mixed drag racing with a
- 0:18Speaker 1: dui when he was just nineteen years old. He once
- 0:22Speaker 1: smoked so much grass on a private jet that the
- 0:24Speaker 1: pilots had to wear oxygen masks. He went from heart
- 0:28Speaker 1: throb to hedonist seemingly overnight, with a taste for pills
- 0:32Speaker 1: and for partying with his fratbrow of a father. His
- 0:36Speaker 1: partying was so out of control that his bodyguards had
- 0:39Speaker 1: to check his pulse throughout the night to make sure
- 0:41Speaker 1: he was still alive. His behavior compelled over a quarter
- 0:46Speaker 1: million Americans to petition for his deportation, and one deranged
- 0:51Speaker 1: super fan even plotted his murder. But in between his
- 0:55Speaker 1: laundry list of reckless, shameful, and often downright stone in fractions, Yeah,
- 1:01Speaker 1: I'll say it, Justin Bieber has made some great music.
- 1:06Speaker 1: Unlike that music I played for you at the top
- 1:09Speaker 1: of the show. That wasn't great music. That was a
- 1:12Speaker 1: preset loop from my melotron called Cyndi lauper Iz MK one.
- 1:19Speaker 1: I played you that loop because I can't afford the
- 1:22Speaker 1: rights to Timber by Pitbull featuring Kesha, and why would
- 1:26Speaker 1: I play you that specific slice of sleazy square dance cheese?
- 1:30Speaker 1: Could I afford it? Because that was the number one
- 1:34Speaker 1: song in America on January twenty tewod twenty fourteen, and
- 1:39Speaker 1: that was the day Justin Bieber woke up in Miami
- 1:43Speaker 1: jail cell on this episode drag race, DUI's deportation, threats,
- 1:50Speaker 1: murder plots, and Justin Bieber, I'm Jake Brennan in this
- 1:56Speaker 1: is Disgraceland. Tie it really really tight, not it in
- 2:25Speaker 1: the front once, really tight, and then put it in
- 2:28Speaker 1: a knot, and that cuts off all the oxygen. Dana
- 2:33Speaker 1: Martin should have been whispering someone here in the joint
- 2:36Speaker 1: was no doubt listening to his phone call, noting his
- 2:39Speaker 1: oddly specific instructions, but he was too eager to give
- 2:42Speaker 1: a shit and then tie it back again, really tight,
- 2:46Speaker 1: and that seals the deal. He kept repeating that really tight.
- 2:51Speaker 1: This whole operation had to be really tight if it
- 2:54Speaker 1: was going to work. Dana needed a few people to disappear.
- 3:00Speaker 1: He'd do it himself if he could. Dana was no
- 3:03Speaker 1: shrinking Violet. He'd killed before. That wasn't the problem. The
- 3:07Speaker 1: problem was the time he was doing a life sentence
- 3:10Speaker 1: for the rape and murder of a fifteen year old
- 3:13Speaker 1: girl for the rest of his days. However many days
- 3:16Speaker 1: that would be. Diana wasn't going to go anywhere besides
- 3:19Speaker 1: the Southern New Mexico Correctional Facility. But his old prison buddy,
- 3:23Speaker 1: Mark Mark was already free, living blissfully on the other
- 3:28Speaker 1: side of the barbed wire fence, and probation wasn't going
- 3:31Speaker 1: to stop Mark from breaking the law again, especially if
- 3:34Speaker 1: Mark's nephew, Tanner lent the hand. Tanner was the one
- 3:39Speaker 1: on the other end of the phone. He listened to
- 3:41Speaker 1: Dana's really tight instructions as well as his demands, demands
- 3:46Speaker 1: that required specific tools. Tool number one a Paisley necktie
- 3:52Speaker 1: aka Dana's murder weapon of choice, the same calling card
- 3:56Speaker 1: he used twelve years earlier in two thousand when He's
- 3:59Speaker 1: savage ended that teenage girl's life. Tool number two hedge
- 4:04Speaker 1: clippers sharp enough to slice off the victims testicles. A
- 4:09Speaker 1: few castrations would earn Mark and Tanner in extra twenty
- 4:12Speaker 1: five hundred dollars a pop. That's five thousand dollars per victim.
- 4:17Speaker 1: Sometimes Dana spoke in code called his victims, pipules who
- 4:22Speaker 1: needed to be castrated or adopted aka whacked or aka killed.
- 4:28Speaker 1: But there was one name Dana didn't hesitate to speak of.
- 4:31Speaker 1: In code, he asked Tanner, if Mark went over the
- 4:34Speaker 1: Justin Bieber thing, Yes, that Justin Bieber. Dana was going
- 4:40Speaker 1: to make sure Justin Bieber never sang again, and for
- 4:44Speaker 1: good measure, take out the prick's bodyguard too. A muscle
- 4:48Speaker 1: on Dana's leg, one directly beneath his Justin Bieber tattoo,
- 4:52Speaker 1: twitched as he spoke. His criminal record said he was
- 4:55Speaker 1: a tough guy, a literal murderer. The ink on Dan
- 5:00Speaker 1: and his leg told a different story, a story about
- 5:02Speaker 1: a grown man with a soft spot for a pop
- 5:05Speaker 1: star from Ontario. But Justin Bieber wasn't a cute pop
- 5:10Speaker 1: prodigy anymore. This overconfident, overrated brad who claimed to be
- 5:15Speaker 1: Justin Bieber in twenty twelve was nothing but an impostor.
- 5:18Speaker 1: Dana couldn't look at his tattoo anymore without becoming overwhelmed
- 5:21Speaker 1: with regret and rage. Justin Bieber had become too big
- 5:25Speaker 1: for his bridges. Someone needed to give him a permanent
- 5:28Speaker 1: attitude adjustment. And if Dana couldn't do it due to
- 5:32Speaker 1: his present incarcerated circumstances. Well, then his buddy Mark and
- 5:36Speaker 1: Mark's nephew Tanner would for a price. Of course, Dana
- 5:41Speaker 1: made Mark a sweet deal if he could complete the
- 5:44Speaker 1: murders and mutilations. Dana promised him a ferrari on top
- 5:48Speaker 1: of the fifty grand, plus the deed to a farm
- 5:51Speaker 1: previously owned by Michael J. Fox Don't ask oh, and
- 5:55Speaker 1: the good graces of a Chinese heroin dang in New York.
- 5:58Speaker 1: Then factor in the extra cash for all the severed balls,
- 6:01Speaker 1: and Mark was greedy enough not to care about how
- 6:03Speaker 1: random and fabricated the rewards sounded, and Dana was deranged
- 6:07Speaker 1: enough to say he'd deliver it all. Dana wouldn't be doing
- 6:11Speaker 1: the killing, true, but he organized it, and that was
- 6:14Speaker 1: enough for him. He'd go down in history as the
- 6:17Speaker 1: man responsible for taking down one of America's most prominent
- 6:20Speaker 1: pop stars. Like the madman who shot Beatle John or
- 6:24Speaker 1: the assistant who put a bullet in Selena. Headlines would explode,
- 6:29Speaker 1: legions of young girls would weep, and there'd be one
- 6:32Speaker 1: less snotty boy strutting around on red carpets with that
- 6:35Speaker 1: smug look on his face. Dana craved the notoriety to
- 6:39Speaker 1: be a legend in prison, to be a piece of
- 6:42Speaker 1: music history. Everyone would know that he Dana Martin executed
- 6:47Speaker 1: Justin Bieber because everyone knew everything about Justin Bieber, whether
- 6:51Speaker 1: they wanted to or not. In twenty twelve, no one
- 6:57Speaker 1: dominated pop culture the way that Justin Bieber did, especially
- 7:01Speaker 1: not another man. The Top forty game was all about
- 7:04Speaker 1: Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Rihanna. The Weekend's big break was
- 7:08Speaker 1: still on the horizon, and Chris Brown was still on
- 7:10Speaker 1: the outs with the public, and that left the two
- 7:13Speaker 1: Justins to shoulder the weight of the pop world, Timberlake
- 7:17Speaker 1: and Bieber. But even j T couldn't keep up with
- 7:19Speaker 1: Bieber's unbreakable stride. Justin Bieber's latest album, Believe, debuted at
- 7:26Speaker 1: number one on the Billboard two hundred. The same album
- 7:29Speaker 1: the feature of the four times platinum Making Minaj collaboration
- 7:33Speaker 1: Beauty in a Beat. The song's music video shattered what
- 7:36Speaker 1: was then the YouTube record for the most views in
- 7:38Speaker 1: twenty four hours. It was almost poetic. The boy who
- 7:42Speaker 1: started his career on YouTube was now ruling it. The
- 7:45Speaker 1: viral Rags to Rich's story of Justin Bieber's career boosted
- 7:48Speaker 1: his likability. It was hard to look down on a
- 7:51Speaker 1: twelve year old kid chasing his dreams online with uploaded
- 7:54Speaker 1: covers of Alicia Keys and Neo. His goal wasn't just
- 7:58Speaker 1: to become famous andreak out of the mouse infested home
- 8:01Speaker 1: he shared with a single mother. The goal was also
- 8:04Speaker 1: to just sing, to share what Justin and his mother
- 8:08Speaker 1: viewed as a god given gift. And there was another
- 8:11Speaker 1: person who thought Justin's voice was a blessing that needed
- 8:14Speaker 1: to be shared, Scooter Braun. In two thousand and eight,
- 8:19Speaker 1: the music manager hooked Justin up with Island Records. Justin
- 8:23Speaker 1: recorded his first single, one Time, which the radio played
- 8:26Speaker 1: approximately a million times. America instantly fixated on this new
- 8:31Speaker 1: kid on the block, the prepebescent wonder kid with the
- 8:34Speaker 1: angelic voice and a mob of floppy brown hair. The
- 8:37Speaker 1: young girls worshiped him, mobs approved of him, and his
- 8:40Speaker 1: songs wormed their way into the heads of the unsuspecting
- 8:43Speaker 1: and the believers alike, heads like Dana Martin's head. But
- 8:48Speaker 1: that was then, back when Justin Bieber was just a
- 8:51Speaker 1: kid turning eighteen. Though changed him. In Dana Martin's mind,
- 8:56Speaker 1: Justin was reckless, cocky, a phony. He was smoking and
- 9:00Speaker 1: standing around trying to look like a tough guy. Dana
- 9:03Speaker 1: Martin knew better. The boy who once sang the hit
- 9:05Speaker 1: single Baby was now an unbearable man. But he was
- 9:09Speaker 1: also indestructible, and Dana Martin's friends Mark and Tanner were
- 9:14Speaker 1: about to find that out the hard way. They didn't
- 9:21Speaker 1: know how to read a map, they had no idea
- 9:23Speaker 1: where they were, and they never made it to Justin
- 9:26Speaker 1: Bieber Show at Madison Square Garden, the planned scene of
- 9:29Speaker 1: the crime. By the time Mark figured out where the
- 9:32Speaker 1: car was headed, it was too late. His eighty three
- 9:35Speaker 1: BMW came to a crawl. He watched as the building
- 9:39Speaker 1: in the distance came into focus. Border patrol. Border patrol. No, No,
- 9:45Speaker 1: this was all wrong. They were supposed to be at
- 9:47Speaker 1: Madison Square Garden, not in bumfuck Vermont, on the other
- 9:50Speaker 1: side of another country. Border patrol meant forking over your id,
- 9:55Speaker 1: and that meant questions from the cops, and that meant
- 9:57Speaker 1: whoever was in the booth that afternoon would find Mark's
- 10:00Speaker 1: outstanding warrens from back in New Mexico. Mark threw the
- 10:04Speaker 1: car into reverse and started the back pedal, but it
- 10:07Speaker 1: was too late. Officer zeroed in on the old Beamer
- 10:10Speaker 1: trying to make a run for it. Mark was tossed
- 10:13Speaker 1: into the clink first, then Tanner for that phone call
- 10:16Speaker 1: with Dana. Their murder pop was dead in the water,
- 10:19Speaker 1: and they didn't have a single synotistical to show for it,
- 10:24Speaker 1: not to mention that someone beat them to the punch,
- 10:27Speaker 1: because Justin Bieber was dead, the old Justin Bieber that
- 10:32Speaker 1: Dana loved so much at least, and this impostor who
- 10:35Speaker 1: called himself Justin Bieber was a shadow of the innocent
- 10:38Speaker 1: songbird the world catapulted to superstardom, and there was no
- 10:42Speaker 1: telling if he would ever come back. Justin Bieber was
- 11:10Speaker 1: already a little messed up. Behind the wheel of the Lamborghini.
- 11:14Speaker 1: He stared at the makeshift racetrack and at the route
- 11:16Speaker 1: in front of him. One straight shot down the street,
- 11:20Speaker 1: two lanes, two sports cars, Justin in the yellow Lambeau,
- 11:24Speaker 1: his pal, and a red Ferrari. The signs along Pine
- 11:28Speaker 1: Street Drive said thirty miles an hour speed limits were
- 11:31Speaker 1: for squares. Justin liked to think that he lived in
- 11:35Speaker 1: the fast lane and that no one was going to
- 11:37Speaker 1: slow him down. He made sure of that. His crew
- 11:40Speaker 1: had parked two SUVs down the street perpendicular to the road,
- 11:44Speaker 1: makeshift roadblock. Tonight's Bieber Grand Prix would go off without
- 11:49Speaker 1: a hitch. Justin rebbed the Lamborghini's engine and park just
- 11:53Speaker 1: to hear it per and then he locked eyes with
- 11:55Speaker 1: his friend in the lane beside him. He was on.
- 12:00Speaker 1: Justin threw the car to drive and let that motherfucker fly.
- 12:03Speaker 1: The beer on his lips, the weed and his lungs,
- 12:05Speaker 1: the prescription pills in his bloodstream, none of it mattered.
- 12:08Speaker 1: Right now. Justin was chasing a different thrill, not a
- 12:11Speaker 1: chemical one. Danger, the greatest high, the high at doing
- 12:16Speaker 1: something just because you can, and doing it in a
- 12:19Speaker 1: car that's not even yours. Tonight, this rental would get
- 12:23Speaker 1: pushed to the max. There were no rules when you
- 12:26Speaker 1: were Justin Peeber. The world bent to your will, and
- 12:29Speaker 1: it always would. The Lambeaus engine roared, the Ferrari gained
- 12:34Speaker 1: on him in the next lane. Justin didn't sweat it.
- 12:37Speaker 1: He was a born winner. He won on the charts,
- 12:40Speaker 1: one on the radio, one at the awards shows, and
- 12:42Speaker 1: he'd win again. Tonight. Even if there weren't many people
- 12:45Speaker 1: cruising around Miami Beach at four am to see it happen,
- 12:49Speaker 1: there were a few passing cars that took notice that night,
- 12:52Speaker 1: January twenty second, twenty fourteen. One in particular took more
- 12:57Speaker 1: than a passing interests. A trolling officer recognized the scene
- 13:01Speaker 1: from a mile away. Drag racing, big kids and their
- 13:05Speaker 1: big toys being big assholes. The cop banged a yuwie
- 13:10Speaker 1: and tore down Pine Street until he was right on
- 13:12Speaker 1: the Wayborghini's ass. The race may have ended, but that thrill,
- 13:15Speaker 1: that high, that danger was still there. Justin didn't want
- 13:19Speaker 1: it to end. What the fuck did I do? Why
- 13:23Speaker 1: did you stop me? Justin wanted answers from the officer
- 13:27Speaker 1: who now stood outside the Lambeau driver's side door. Justin
- 13:30Speaker 1: reeked a booze, his cheeks flushed red. He refused to
- 13:34Speaker 1: believe he was in the wrong. Winners were never wrong,
- 13:37Speaker 1: That's what made them winners. I ain't got no fucking weapons.
- 13:41Speaker 1: The cop didn't need weapons. Just he expired driver's license
- 13:45Speaker 1: from Georgia down at the station. Justin Bieber wouldn't own
- 13:50Speaker 1: up to the drag racing, but he did own up
- 13:52Speaker 1: about the cocktail chemicals in his system. Yeah he smoked
- 13:55Speaker 1: a little weed that night, and yeah he took some
- 13:57Speaker 1: pills prescription once though, And yeah he had a drink
- 14:00Speaker 1: one beer. Big fucking deal. Was that a crime? Not
- 14:05Speaker 1: at home in Canada where the drinking age was eighteen,
- 14:07Speaker 1: but this was in Ontario, this was the United States,
- 14:11Speaker 1: and he was a couple of years shy of the
- 14:12Speaker 1: drinking age. Mccobs hit him with three charges DUI, driving
- 14:18Speaker 1: with an expired license, and resisting arrest without violence. Three
- 14:23Speaker 1: strikes in one night. The thing was Justin Bieber didn't
- 14:27Speaker 1: have any strikes to spare to begin with. Twenty fourteen
- 14:34Speaker 1: was a mess from the start. January ninth, Justin Bieber
- 14:38Speaker 1: eggs his neighbor's home and causes twenty thousand dollars in damages, Yes,
- 14:42Speaker 1: twenty grand from eggs. Any damages over nine hundred and
- 14:46Speaker 1: fifty dollars push vandalism charges beyond a misdemeanor. January fourteenth,
- 14:51Speaker 1: a dozen deputies raided Justin's Calabasis mansion over the egging incident,
- 14:55Speaker 1: tore the place apart like he was Tony, Montana, and
- 14:58Speaker 1: they found nothing. They even seized the security system's hard drives.
- 15:02Speaker 1: Zero Justin was clean. His guest lili Za, wasn't so lucky.
- 15:07Speaker 1: The cops uncovered the rapper's cokestash during the raid. Or
- 15:10Speaker 1: was that ecstasy? The cops didn't know, and they didn't care.
- 15:13Speaker 1: They saw tancuffs on Leliza while the papers paraded around
- 15:17Speaker 1: with photos from the raid. Neither incident was a jaw
- 15:20Speaker 1: dropping scandal. Individual infractions weren't the problem. The problem was
- 15:25Speaker 1: how fast Justin could stack up this bullshit without even
- 15:28Speaker 1: breaking a sweat. The entire world watched and pissed into
- 15:32Speaker 1: restaurant's mop bucket as he drunkenly cussed out Bill Clinton.
- 15:36Speaker 1: They judged him when he covered himself in bed sheets
- 15:38Speaker 1: to leave a world renowned brothel in Brazil. He claimed
- 15:41Speaker 1: he was merely at the famed Centauris to party. He
- 15:45Speaker 1: outcringed himself when he wrote a note in the Anne
- 15:48Speaker 1: frank House guest book saying he hoped Anne would have
- 15:51Speaker 1: been a believer, which is another word for a diehard fan. Still,
- 15:55Speaker 1: these were all just dumb teenage missteps. He could do
- 15:59Speaker 1: much worse, like a dui. Three little letters that could
- 16:03Speaker 1: ruin your reputation forever as a boy, Justin Bieber said,
- 16:07Speaker 1: he never becomes some scandalous celebrity has been, But boy
- 16:10Speaker 1: Justin wasn't here anymore. No matter how hard his fans
- 16:13Speaker 1: clung to the early hits in his baby face chm
- 16:16Speaker 1: that version of Justin Bieber was dead and buried. An
- 16:19Speaker 1: adult Justin was proudly thinking his grave. Every controversy pushed
- 16:24Speaker 1: him another foot forward into the ground, and the media
- 16:27Speaker 1: frenzies surrounding his troubled transition into adulthood practically worked in
- 16:31Speaker 1: his favor when it came to leaving the boy Bieber behind.
- 16:34Speaker 1: The viral images, the fuzzy videos on blogs, the social
- 16:37Speaker 1: media commentary, it all helped the mass to see Justin
- 16:40Speaker 1: for what he really was, an adult capable of making
- 16:43Speaker 1: his own decisions, especially making the wrong decisions over and
- 16:49Speaker 1: over again. The Miami authorities only made Justin Bieber suffer
- 16:56Speaker 1: in jail for ten hours after his dui. Making bad
- 17:00Speaker 1: was the easy part. Twenty five hundred dollars was penis
- 17:03Speaker 1: to Justin. The real challenge was giving the public an
- 17:06Speaker 1: image that would make them forget his fresh mugshot. Dashing
- 17:09Speaker 1: as it was, Justin had a vision. He strutted out
- 17:13Speaker 1: of the Turner Guildford Night Correctional Center and brushed past
- 17:16Speaker 1: the swarm of reporters and hopped onto the roof of
- 17:19Speaker 1: the first suv in sight. He kicked back and gave
- 17:22Speaker 1: the sea of smartphones a cordial wave. Another man posed
- 17:26Speaker 1: just like this over ten years ago as he left
- 17:28Speaker 1: a courtroom, a fellow pop icon enjoying a lifetime of
- 17:32Speaker 1: royalty from childhood until the day he did his last moonwalk,
- 17:36Speaker 1: Michael Jackson. Michael offered nearly the same pose when he
- 17:41Speaker 1: left the Santa Barbara Courthouse in two thousand and four
- 17:43Speaker 1: after pleading not guilty to seven counts of child molestation.
- 17:48Speaker 1: Justin even posted the two photos side by side on
- 17:50Speaker 1: Instagram in case people missed the reference. But who dared
- 17:54Speaker 1: to compare themselves to the king of pop. Who dared
- 17:57Speaker 1: to compare themselves to a man who left a courthouse
- 18:00Speaker 1: or were allegedly molesting kids? The same guy who hoped
- 18:03Speaker 1: Anne Frank would be a believer? That's who The tacky
- 18:07Speaker 1: comparison Wasn't Justin's problem right now? Right now he was free.
- 18:12Speaker 1: I mean, he was only in jail for ten hours,
- 18:13Speaker 1: But that's a long time when you're trying to tune
- 18:15Speaker 1: up the sound of horny violin inmates hollering at you.
- 18:17Speaker 1: Just because he had a pretty face, Justin needed to
- 18:20Speaker 1: take the edge off asat. After his photo walk, he
- 18:24Speaker 1: and his crew went straight from the correctional center to
- 18:26Speaker 1: the South Beach clubs. Justin didn't bring his drag racing
- 18:29Speaker 1: friend along this time, though. He wanted to blow off
- 18:32Speaker 1: steam with someone else, someone who could cut loose like
- 18:35Speaker 1: a pro, a good pal named Jeremy. Jeremy had been
- 18:39Speaker 1: at the scene of the crime last night. Some people
- 18:42Speaker 1: even claimed he was the one who blocked off the street,
- 18:44Speaker 1: although Justin denied it. Now Jeremy was here tonight at
- 18:48Speaker 1: a table flush with bottles at five point thirty pm,
- 18:51Speaker 1: barely twelve hours after he watched Justin walk away in handcuffs.
- 18:56Speaker 1: The media called him a bad influence, but Justin just
- 18:59Speaker 1: called the dad. We'll be right back after this word
- 19:07Speaker 1: word word. In twenty fourteen, Justin Bieber's father, Jeremy wasn't
- 19:18Speaker 1: just in the picture. He was in every picture paparazzi
- 19:23Speaker 1: photos shot at the club, at the beach, at the game,
- 19:26Speaker 1: climbing in and out of luxury cars and private jets
- 19:29Speaker 1: next to Justin and his entourage, as if he were
- 19:31Speaker 1: one of the Bros, and not twice the age of
- 19:34Speaker 1: everyone around him. Justin and Jeremy weren't always so tight.
- 19:38Speaker 1: Justin's father missed plenty in his firstborn son's life, Like
- 19:43Speaker 1: the day he was born. On March first, nineteen ninety four,
- 19:48Speaker 1: Jeremy Bieber was behind barrows in a county prison in
- 19:51Speaker 1: Ontario after a nasty fight with God knows who about
- 19:55Speaker 1: God knows what. But even if Jeremy were a free
- 19:58Speaker 1: man that day, he probably wouldn't have been beside his
- 20:01Speaker 1: own again off again girlfriend Patty at Saint Joseph's Hospital.
- 20:05Speaker 1: Hospitals for sterile depressing. Not a good time, and Jeremy
- 20:11Speaker 1: Bieber was all about chasing good times with or without Patty.
- 20:16Speaker 1: In the beginning, Jeremy and Patty made sense as a couple.
- 20:20Speaker 1: They were both high schoolers from broken homes with enough
- 20:22Speaker 1: baggage for a year long vacation. Patty was sexually abused
- 20:27Speaker 1: as a girl and turned to pedaling weed as a teenager.
- 20:30Speaker 1: Jeremy was a young drinker who had already inherited some
- 20:32Speaker 1: belligerent traits from his alcoholic father. They got fucked up together,
- 20:37Speaker 1: and they fought, made up, and then got fucked up again.
- 20:40Speaker 1: Patty and Jeremy played a vicious game of cat and
- 20:42Speaker 1: mouse until it wasn't a game anymore. Patty was pregnant
- 20:48Speaker 1: and she was keeping the baby. She laid down the
- 20:51Speaker 1: rules when she broke the news to Jeremy. If he
- 20:54Speaker 1: wanted to stay in the picture, that meant he had
- 20:56Speaker 1: to be pregnant too. No more fighting, no more drinking
- 20:59Speaker 1: and partying. Jeremy didn't have to think too long about it.
- 21:02Speaker 1: He went out and got trash that same night. Patty
- 21:06Speaker 1: powered through her pregnancy without Jeremy. She cut the drinking,
- 21:09Speaker 1: quit the drugs, took parenting classes, attended counseling. Eventually, Patty
- 21:14Speaker 1: invited Jeremy to join her for a single Amma's class.
- 21:18Speaker 1: He walked out on her, immediately locked up in jail
- 21:21Speaker 1: or not, it was clear Jeremy was never going to
- 21:24Speaker 1: be by Patty's side in the maternity ward. She gave
- 21:27Speaker 1: birth to Justin without it, when she was just seventeen
- 21:30Speaker 1: years old. It would be a month before Jeremy would
- 21:33Speaker 1: meet his firstborn son. In years before he committed to
- 21:36Speaker 1: actually being a parent. He scheduled visits with Justin and
- 21:40Speaker 1: then blew him off, claimed he found Jesus and wanted
- 21:43Speaker 1: to recover, and then got loaded, committed himself to Patty
- 21:46Speaker 1: as a family man, and then cheated on her. He
- 21:50Speaker 1: ran hot and cold until Justin was four years old,
- 21:53Speaker 1: when Jeremy stepped up to the plate enough to take
- 21:55Speaker 1: Justin every Wednesday and every weekend. He focused on a
- 21:59Speaker 1: kind of good time times that was more family friendly.
- 22:02Speaker 1: Jeremy focused on music. He taught Justin how to play
- 22:07Speaker 1: his favorite songs on a guitar, EASYGDC chord, classics like
- 22:11Speaker 1: Bob Dylan's Knocking on Heaven's Door. He'd tell eight year
- 22:14Speaker 1: old Justin to wrap that tupac verse, and Justin would
- 22:17Speaker 1: just start spitting thugs mansion like a pro. While Justin
- 22:21Speaker 1: learned about music, Jeremy learned what it meant to share
- 22:24Speaker 1: good times without some kind of substance. Then came the fame,
- 22:30Speaker 1: the riches, the status, the luxuries that would have been
- 22:33Speaker 1: unheard of for the Beavers just a few years ago.
- 22:36Speaker 1: Justin's tour revenue in royalty snowballed into a heap of
- 22:39Speaker 1: wealth that he happily shared with Jeremy. Justin treated his
- 22:43Speaker 1: dad to a monthly allowance rumored to be as high
- 22:45Speaker 1: as fifty thousand dollars. He even paid Jeremy's rent in
- 22:49Speaker 1: Canada and forked over extra cash when Jeremy's pets damaged
- 22:52Speaker 1: the house. And when Justin turned eighteen, Jeremy turned eighteen
- 22:57Speaker 1: again too. Justin's knew a caldhood hit the reset button
- 23:01Speaker 1: on Jeremy's behavior. Suddenly he could share more than just
- 23:05Speaker 1: music with the sun. They could share bottles, cars, lavish parties,
- 23:10Speaker 1: get matching tattoos. Jeremy's good times were back, and they
- 23:14Speaker 1: were great times now because he and his affluent son
- 23:17Speaker 1: could grow out like the world was their frat house.
- 23:20Speaker 1: Their relationship fascinated the media. News sites painted Jeremy as
- 23:24Speaker 1: a deadbeat dad who crept out of the woodwork once
- 23:26Speaker 1: the sun went platinum, no matter how much Justin denied it.
- 23:30Speaker 1: Who was the parent in this relationship and who is
- 23:32Speaker 1: the child? Maybe they were a little bit of both,
- 23:35Speaker 1: Maybe they were a little bit of each other, A
- 23:37Speaker 1: little bit of history repeating January nineteen ninety seven, Jeremy
- 23:45Speaker 1: Bieber is charged with one count of assault or causing
- 23:48Speaker 1: bodily harm ninety days in jail, two years probation. March
- 23:54Speaker 1: nineteen ninety nine, Jeremy Bieber fails to comply with probation,
- 23:58Speaker 1: twenty one more days in jail, years of probation. November
- 24:02Speaker 1: two thousand and two, Jeremy Bieber another assault charge, this
- 24:06Speaker 1: time with a weapon. The case was dismissed in two
- 24:09Speaker 1: thousand and four. Jeremy Bieber got off easy that time,
- 24:13Speaker 1: but his son might not get so lucky. He knew
- 24:19Speaker 1: what he had to do. He would be easier this way,
- 24:22Speaker 1: simpler and less dramatic. Well, if the goddamn paparazzi would
- 24:27Speaker 1: get off his back for a few minutes. Justin Bieber
- 24:30Speaker 1: elbowed his way through the crowd and into a police station.
- 24:33Speaker 1: He had to give the cops what they wanted himself.
- 24:37Speaker 1: He wasn't in Florida anymore. He was back home in Toronto,
- 24:41Speaker 1: turning himself in so the police could hit him with
- 24:43Speaker 1: one charge of assault over a scuffle with a Limo
- 24:45Speaker 1: driver the year prior. And it was still fucking January
- 24:48Speaker 1: twenty fourteen, another mishap in the month that would not
- 24:53Speaker 1: end if Justin Bieber didn't cut this out on his own,
- 24:56Speaker 1: maybe the US government would nudge him in the right direction.
- 25:00Speaker 1: While Justin posted bail in January twenty fourteen, a handful
- 25:05Speaker 1: of pissed off Americans posted a petition to the White
- 25:07Speaker 1: House website asking the Obama administration to revoke Justin's green card.
- 25:12Speaker 1: First of all, get fucking lives people. This petition that
- 25:17Speaker 1: they created it painted Justin as a drugged out, washed
- 25:20Speaker 1: up danger to the nation's young people who needed to
- 25:23Speaker 1: be removed immediately. One hundred thousand people signed the petition
- 25:27Speaker 1: in less than a week. In a few months, that
- 25:29Speaker 1: number grew to over a quarter million. This new Justin
- 25:32Speaker 1: Bieber was officially unrecognizable to the public. His new criminal
- 25:36Speaker 1: record escalated his behavior from obnoxious to immoral. Justin buried
- 25:41Speaker 1: baby Beaver so deep into the ground, so deep into
- 25:44Speaker 1: his own mind, that he was becoming someone else, someone
- 25:48Speaker 1: just like Jeremy. Their tattoos and over indulgent lifestyles were
- 25:53Speaker 1: already identical. Now they had matching criminal charges too, and
- 25:58Speaker 1: Justin's reputation was going up and smoke. The pilots fumbled
- 26:05Speaker 1: for their oxygen masks, pull the mass down from the ceiling,
- 26:09Speaker 1: fasten it to your head with the elastic straps and
- 26:11Speaker 1: pull them tight, nice and snug. The pilots heard those
- 26:15Speaker 1: instructions so many times that they knew them inside and
- 26:17Speaker 1: out and backwards, but they never thought they'd ever have
- 26:20Speaker 1: to actually use them. Today, they didn't have a choice.
- 26:25Speaker 1: Justin Bieber's least Gulf Stream four private jet didn't just
- 26:28Speaker 1: reek of smoke. It's succumbed to it. It didn't matter
- 26:32Speaker 1: how many times the pilots told Justin, Jeremy and their
- 26:35Speaker 1: crew to stuff out the joints and save them for later.
- 26:37Speaker 1: They smoked all the way from Toronto to New Jersey.
- 26:41Speaker 1: So called rules in the air were just like so
- 26:43Speaker 1: called rules of the road. They couldn't bring two biaber
- 26:46Speaker 1: men down. As for the officials waiting for them at
- 26:51Speaker 1: the airport, that was a different story. Someone on board
- 26:56Speaker 1: must have snitched. An entire squad of government officials were
- 27:00Speaker 1: waiting at the gate, DEA REPS, men, from Customs, Border
- 27:04Speaker 1: Protection agents, and just regular ass cops. They all witnessed
- 27:07Speaker 1: a wave of marijuana smoke wash over them when Justin
- 27:10Speaker 1: and Jeremy deplaned. Ironically, for the crew, the smoke didn't
- 27:14Speaker 1: matter to the authorities. What did matter was whether or
- 27:18Speaker 1: not Justin and Jeremy were smart enough to make sure
- 27:20Speaker 1: there weren't any leftovers from their sky high party. The
- 27:24Speaker 1: two well trained drug dogs at the gate could sniff
- 27:28Speaker 1: out any last seed or stem like truffle picks, but
- 27:31Speaker 1: as they nosed their way through the jet in Justin's luggage,
- 27:34Speaker 1: there wasn't a nug in sight. Without anything to seize,
- 27:38Speaker 1: the authorities were forced to let both Biebermen go. America's
- 27:42Speaker 1: so called enemy had landed. The security guard loomed over
- 28:12Speaker 1: Justin Bieber's bed. He knew the drill, but that didn't
- 28:15Speaker 1: mean he enjoyed it. He fumbled in the darkness to
- 28:18Speaker 1: find an arm and then placed his thumb over Justin's wrist.
- 28:22Speaker 1: And then he waited and waited and waited some more,
- 28:27Speaker 1: still alive, thank god. On the inside, however, Justin felt
- 28:32Speaker 1: like he was dying. His team had more to worry
- 28:35Speaker 1: about than pot on planes. Pot couldn't kill you. Pills good.
- 28:44Speaker 1: Justin forced himself into a rut with his own habits.
- 28:47Speaker 1: Wake up and light up, grab some pills and whatever's
- 28:50Speaker 1: in your glass, and drink up. That unique breakfast gave
- 28:53Speaker 1: him the drive to get up and get out of bed.
- 28:56Speaker 1: That meant his team had to make their own routine
- 28:58Speaker 1: to monitor Justin's drug use. They had to check Justin's
- 29:01Speaker 1: pulse every so often at night, just in case. You know.
- 29:05Speaker 1: No one dared finish that sentence. The guards were careful
- 29:09Speaker 1: to never disturb Justin while he slept, but the check
- 29:12Speaker 1: ins were an alarming wake up call. The name Justin
- 29:15Speaker 1: Bieber used to make people light up. Now it made
- 29:19Speaker 1: more than a quarter million people fear for an entire
- 29:22Speaker 1: nation's children. When he was a boy, Justin believed he
- 29:26Speaker 1: was here to sing and bring other people joy. Instead,
- 29:29Speaker 1: he brought them shame, anxiety, and disappointment. There was nothing
- 29:34Speaker 1: manly or mature about that. It was time for a change.
- 29:38Speaker 1: To take the next exit out of the fast lane
- 29:40Speaker 1: and slow down enough to enjoy the view. An old
- 29:43Speaker 1: friend was calling Justin to camp out at his place
- 29:46Speaker 1: for a proper detox, not just from the drugs, from everything.
- 29:51Speaker 1: Justin needed to go back to where he began, back
- 29:54Speaker 1: to the simplicity of singing for the sake of making music.
- 29:58Speaker 1: He packed his bags for your Jersey again solo. This
- 30:01Speaker 1: time he wasn't hanging out the Jeremy beeper way. For
- 30:05Speaker 1: the next six weeks, he'd have a different role model,
- 30:08Speaker 1: a pastor friend from a church in Manhattan, the same
- 30:12Speaker 1: friend who baptized him back in twenty ten, back when
- 30:15Speaker 1: most of the world still found Justin wholesome. Justin hunkered
- 30:20Speaker 1: down in the privacy of his friend's home and got
- 30:22Speaker 1: sober the old fashioned way, cold turkey, no coaches, no aa,
- 30:27Speaker 1: no classes. Justin never told the press much more about
- 30:31Speaker 1: those few weeks in New Jersey. He didn't have to.
- 30:35Speaker 1: What came next explained everything. Sobriety cleared the smoke that
- 30:43Speaker 1: had been clouding Justin's mind. It made him musical again
- 30:47Speaker 1: instead of over umacho. He went back into the studio
- 30:51Speaker 1: as a reformed man, eager to make people smile again,
- 30:54Speaker 1: and the title of his next album set at All.
- 30:57Speaker 1: He called it purpose. Purpose isn't something you're born with,
- 31:02Speaker 1: It's something you search for and fight to protect. Boy
- 31:06Speaker 1: bieber knew his voice was his purpose, and then he
- 31:09Speaker 1: squandered it for the chance to prove how much of
- 31:11Speaker 1: a man he was. When Justin dropped his twenty fifteen
- 31:15Speaker 1: singles Sorry, he said it was an apology for his
- 31:18Speaker 1: former girlfriend Selena Gomez. Maybe that was the truth, but
- 31:22Speaker 1: the public knew he had plenty of other crimes to
- 31:24Speaker 1: atone for Sorry was only the first part of his penance.
- 31:29Speaker 1: In twenty fifteen, Justin Bieber took his foot off the
- 31:32Speaker 1: gas and shifted out of the fast lane for real.
- 31:35Speaker 1: He turned away from not just drag racing in the street,
- 31:38Speaker 1: but from drugs, and although these days he's not shy
- 31:42Speaker 1: about smoking weed, his change behavior was the actual true apology.
- 31:48Speaker 1: Well that in a fifty thousand dollars donation to a
- 31:50Speaker 1: charity called Our Kids, is part of a plea bargin
- 31:53Speaker 1: for his duy. Fast cars don't make you a real man.
- 31:58Speaker 1: Neither does assault or torture during a flight crew. Being
- 32:01Speaker 1: an adult means you have the power to make shitty choices,
- 32:04Speaker 1: choices like speeding toward in early demise at four in
- 32:07Speaker 1: the morning. But you can make other choices too. You
- 32:11Speaker 1: can turn the car around. No more crashes, no more scandal,
- 32:16Speaker 1: and no more disgrace. I'm Jake Brennan, and this is Disgraceland.
