- 0:07The San Francisco Giants faced the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field in Chicago for a Sunday afternoon game on May 11, 1969.
- 0:15The Giants had finished in second place in each of the past four seasons under manager Herman Franks,
- 0:20but were looking to finally break through in 1969 under new manager Clyde King.
- 0:24Chicago had some hope in 1969 as well under manager Leo DeRosier.
- 0:28Chicago had finished no higher than seventh place throughout the 1960s,
- 0:32but the past few seasons DeRosier was able to turn the team around
- 0:35and finish in third place in the National League in both 1967 and 68.
- 0:39This audio recording is from the San Francisco Radio broadcast featuring announcers Russ Hodges and Bill Thompson.
- 0:45San Francisco Giants baseball is on the air. Good afternoon baseball fans, along with Russ Hodges and Bill Thompson welcoming you to another ball game from Chicago.
- 0:58Today's game between the Giants and Chicago Cubs is brought to you by the people at Pacific Telephone.
- 1:03We'll remind you when it comes to communications, we're here to help.
- 1:06And by the Standard Oil Company of California and its dealers, we'll invite you to come to Sheppard Island to a welcome change of theme.
- 1:13You'll like the spirit. Also by Ruth Atkins, the Giants and men's clothing in the West, with 48 locations in the West and Hawaii, there's a Ruth Atkins near you.
- 1:23And by Berge, the comfortable beer. It's soft water brewed to refresh you and keeps you right on refreshing.
- 1:29Berge, well the weather's been something here in Chicago.
- 1:35For those of you who are with us Friday, you know that the game was delayed four times, three after it started.
- 1:43Rain fell heavily at times during the contest. The Giants finally went on to win it handily yesterday.
- 1:51It rained out completely. And today, well as of right now, there's some sunshine on the field.
- 1:56But there are dark clouds all the way around. It rained just a couple of minutes ago.
- 2:01The field had been covered right up until infield time. They took infield workouts.
- 2:08Then it started raining. And well the infield itself is in good shape.
- 2:13The outfield is going to be a little slow and heavy today. And we'll probably have some showers along the way.
- 2:20We'll have the starting lineups for you in just one moment.
- 2:25So when I look at a crowd like this today enjoying themselves, I realize that spectator sports like baseball demand a crowd.
- 2:32Lots of people add to the fun and excitement of coming out to a game.
- 2:36But seeing all these people reminds me that there are times when crowds are pretty unwelcome.
- 2:41For example, when you're out trying to shop. Now if you've been out shopping lately, you'll know what I mean.
- 2:47Fighting your way through a lot of people can be pretty tiring.
- 2:51So I'd like to make a suggestion. Let the yellow pages of your phone book help you out.
- 2:57If I spend a lot of time running from one store to another looking for a product or trying to find some kind of service,
- 3:03you can do your shopping right from your living room. Use the yellow pages.
- 3:08Save your feet and your temper. You'll find everything from A to Z listed in the handy index.
- 3:14Then a few calls and you'll know just where to head. Or maybe you can make arrangements right over the telephone for what you want.
- 3:21So friends, before you make that shopping trip, make a trip to your telephone book and the yellow pages.
- 3:31This broadcast is authorized under broadcasting rights granted by the San Francisco Giants solely for the entertainment of our listening audience.
- 3:38Any publication, rebroadcast, or other uses is a description and account for this game without the express written consent of the San Francisco Giants is prohibited.
- 3:46And if you insist on using them, we'll make you listen to the Chuff Beanie Show.
- 3:51Did I say that last time? I'm sorry. That's twice you've been threatened. Now let that be a warning.
- 3:57The umpires at home, Blake, Ron Sando and Willie Mays with the lineups. And here are the lineups.
- 4:03For the Giants, Bobby Bonds will lead off and play in center field.

- 5:10Randy Humley the catcher hitting sixth.
- 5:14Jerma Hickman in right field batting seventh.
- 5:19Adolfo Phillips in center field hitting eighth.
- 5:23And left hander Kenny Holtzman doing the pitching.
- 5:26And now here is our national anthem.
- 5:56The National Anthem.
- 6:26The National Anthem.
- 6:40Left hander Kenny Holtzman four and one.
- 6:44Next his eighth start is first against San Francisco.
- 6:48Glass outing with a 7 to 1 complete game win over the Dodgers.
- 6:52He gave up just six hits.
- 6:54He has three complete games and one shutout to his credit so far.
- 7:00Last season he was two and two against the Giants.
- 7:08He pitched a two to nothing shutout against them when he was in the middle of three consecutive shutouts.
- 7:17Overall in his lifetime he is four and three.
- 7:20Sadecki two and three makes his seventh round of the year first against the Cubs.
- 7:25One and two with Chicago last year.
- 7:28Twenty-nine innings against the Cubs.
- 7:30He gave up seven earned runs for an earned run average of two and one-seven.
- 7:33Lifetime he's fourteen and eleven against Chicago.
- 7:43Bobby Barnes will lead off.
- 7:51Ben Buchhalder wants us to say hello to the folks in Belmont for him.
- 7:59They didn't think he'd dare wear his San Francisco Rooters hat but he has.
- 8:03Bond Sadecki swings and takes a strike on a curve ball.
- 8:14All one count to Bobby leading off against the left-hander Holtzman.
- 8:17A one-strike pitch, a curve, strike two.
- 8:23Holtzman has had great stuff.
- 8:31No two pitch, fastball outside for one and two.
- 8:38Great crowd here today for the conditions.
- 8:43Probably would have a capacity house if the weather had been good.
- 8:47One-two delivery, curve is low and inside for two and two.
- 8:51Bond Vestridge and Davenport to lead off against Holtzman.
- 8:54The outfield around to the left and deep for Bob. The infield backed up now with two strikes on it.
- 9:04Wind blowing in.
- 9:06Two-two pitch, he's working out.
- 9:09Got him on a change up and Bond is out on strike.
- 9:14That'll bring up Bobby Vestridge.
- 9:27Bond was hitting 277. Vestridge is hitting 273.
- 9:33Right-hander against Holtzman, fastball outside for ball one.
- 9:38Holtzman doesn't waste much time.
- 9:46Left-hander delivers again, fastball filed away by Vestridge with one and one.
- 10:07One-one pitch, curve in the dirt for ball two.
- 10:16Holtzman is only 23 years old, 6'275 pounders.
- 10:25Two-one pitch, swung on a fly ball into right center field coming on as Phillips into right center.
- 10:31The center fielder makes the catch for the second out.
- 10:34Two-or-down. Fans if you ever get a poor connection on a long-distance call.
- 10:40Home company doesn't want you to have to pay for it. Call the operator right away and tell her.
- 10:44She'll help you get a good connection and see that you're not charged for the first call.
- 10:56Jimmy Davenport takes low for a ball one-and-oh.
- 11:02Davenport is 246.
- 11:09Swing and a looping liner into right center field. Phillips coming on, still coming. Can't get to it.
- 11:13It's in front of him for a base hit.
- 11:15So Davenport singles into right center field.
- 11:20And the batter will be Kenny Henderson.
- 11:22Davenport gets the first hit of the day for the Giants, the first hit of the ballgame.
- 11:34Holtzman has had the past two years.
- 11:39Enters first with Army duty.
- 11:43See, it's had to be away during the season.
- 11:47And the curve to Henderson. Strike ball. Kenny batting right-handed.
- 11:52Switch batter against the left-hand offering.
- 11:55Holtzman Henderson hitting 500 at five for ten.
- 12:01Swings and fouls it to the left, and it's one-on-one.
- 12:05Ozzie Virgil at third base. West-Westerm at first.
- 12:15Two-strike count to Henderson.
- 12:30Stretch and the two-strike hit. Swung on, lined into right field.
- 12:33Chasing it. It's in front of him. Davenport goes to third. Henderson holds with a single.
- 12:42And now that back-to-back singles with two down and Jack Hyatt will be the batter.
- 12:47Henderson hit a curving liner to right field that Hickman couldn't catch up with.
- 12:56And Jack Hyatt comes to the plate.
- 13:01Hyatt hitting 224, but he has 14 RBI's. He's also walked 14 times.
- 13:07That's four home runs. Davenport at third. Henderson at first.
- 13:12Nothing, nothing in the top of the first with two outs.
- 13:15The pitch to Hyatt. Curve ball. One on the midside line.
- 13:20That was a hard curve ball. It might have been a slider.
- 13:23The breaking pitch with Holtzman had quite a bit on it.
- 13:30All one count to Hyatt. There goes Henderson.
- 13:32The pitch is a check swing and a foul ball.
- 13:35Back to Hyatt. Couldn't lay off. Found it off.
- 13:38Henderson had a big jump. Probably would have second base stolen.
- 13:47Oh, it's an O2 count to Hyatt.
- 13:52They really exaggerate for Hyatt pulled around to the left.
- 13:54A big gap to the right side if he can roll one in that direction.
- 13:58The O2 pitch outside with a fastball. One and two.
- 14:02Banks playing on at first base with Henderson there.
- 14:05Becker moved well over towards second.
- 14:09Davenport at third. Henderson at first. Two outs.
- 14:11The one and two count to Hyatt.
- 14:13Stretched by Holtzman. The one-two pitch. Curve ball.
- 14:16Swung on and hit high in the air into short center field.
- 14:19Kessinger goes back. Williams comes in and Phillips makes the count.
- 14:25No runs on. Two hits. No errors. And two runners left on.
- 14:33We go to the bottom of the first. It's nothing, nothing.
- 14:36Once again we're interviewing Nancy Dawson, reporter for She She Sports,
- 14:40a sophisticated sports magazine for sports-minded women.
- 14:43Nancy, did you see that belt of Willie's last week?
- 14:45Oh, Willie wore a wonderful belt last week with a sterling silver buckle.
- 14:50Oh, he's so stylish.
- 14:51I was referring to his home run.
- 14:53My readers are more interested in Willie's home than his home run.
- 14:57Oh, it's a lovely place.
- 14:59Aren't they interested in baseball news?
- 15:01Of course. Just last night I called in my story about the sale of the Mudville Hawks
- 15:06for the highest price ever paid.
- 15:09How much was it?
- 15:10Only 75 cents. Phone rates are cheaper at night.
- 15:14No, I was talking about the Mudville Hawks.
- 15:16So was I to my office. I dialed them direct long distance
- 15:20and scooped all the other reporters.
- 15:22Yes, but the Mudville Hawks, did their management change?
- 15:25Oh, yes. They changed to black tie and pale.
- 15:29Formal attire is mandatory when negotiating fan-taxing.
- 15:33Oh, my. Thank you very much, Nancy Dawson of She She Sports magazine.
- 15:42Ray Tadecki loosens up.
- 15:44Ray with an earned run mark of 2.54 pitch to a fine ballgame in St. Louis.
- 15:50He's got no real good fielding support from the Giants and no hitting.
- 15:58And Bob Gibson shut out the Giants.
- 16:02So consequently wound up with a loss.
- 16:06He'll be out here trying to get the Cubs, the ball club to take the lead.
- 16:13They're a ball club that's tough on left-handers with Santa and Banks
- 16:19and the Hundleys applying right-hand power in this comfortable ballpark.
- 16:24However, he has one break today as does Holtman as far as that goes.
- 16:28The wind is blowing in and you have to hit the ball a little harder to get it out of you.
- 16:38Don Kessinger and the Switch Batter will bat right-handers.
- 16:41Kessinger has a batting streak of 15 games, hitting.336.
- 16:49Hathorage plays up close at third at the edge of the grass.
- 16:52The rest of the infield short in the fifth.
- 16:57A pitch to Kessinger, a curve as a strike, and it's all in one.
- 17:15The O-1 pitch, fastball strike two.
- 17:35The O-2 delivery, fastball outside.
- 17:43Lee Weier behind the plate, Harry Wendell's dead at first base,
- 17:46Ken Burkhardt at second, and Sudol at third.
- 17:52One-two count to Kessinger.
- 17:55High for ball two, two and two.
- 17:59Kessinger, Beckerton, Williams.
- 18:16One-two count, pitch on its way, Kessinger fouls it back to the screen.
- 18:32Cubs have called up Bill Heath from Tacoma.
- 18:37Swing and a miss by Kessinger, he's out on the stretch.
- 18:44Heath, the left-hand hitter, caught up.
- 18:51He's a catcher, he'll see a lot of action.
- 18:55Randy Huntley catching every day,
- 18:58except when they're playing a double header, then he catches twice a day.
- 19:02Missed to Glenn Beckert, right-hand batter takes low for a ball one and all.
- 19:06One out, base is empty.
- 19:09Shading 267.
- 19:16Nothing-nothing ballgame, outfield, shading him to the left.
- 19:19Fastball foul back one more.
- 19:24Bond pulled over in the left center, Henderson over near the left field line.
- 19:30Burda over towards right center.
- 19:33They give Beckert quite a bit of the right field line, but the big gap is in the right center field.
- 19:40One-on-one count, Etheridge plays even with third base.
- 19:44Lanier short and the step and shortstop.
- 19:47Mason over near second base and Davenport wide of the bag at first.
- 19:50One-one pitch, last to Etheridge, down at one knee to field it.
- 19:53His throw is off the bag.
- 19:59That was a Scott and Etheridge. He failed it all right, but he pulled Davenport off the bag with a throw.
- 20:05It'll be a throwing error on Bobby Etheridge.
- 20:08We'll pause for state identification. This is the Golden West Radio Network.
- 20:11In the old country we have a state.
- 20:13Fortunately, on Sundays, listen to Peter Scott.
- 20:16Very good, especially when you turn on...
- 20:18KSF Balls in San Francisco.
- 20:26Billy Williams, a left-hand batter appearing in his 850th consecutive game, takes Lone away for a ball high.
- 20:32Coming out of there in a hurry to keep that one from going to the screen.
- 20:36Williams hitting 279.
- 20:45Left-hander against left-hander. Beckert at first as a result of the error.
- 20:51Curveball hangs up high and inside, and luckily it was very high and very much inside, and it's 2-0.
- 21:04One down, one off.
- 21:09The ball hits deep, so it's a fail, and you can forget it.
- 21:22That is only the second home run this year for Billy Williams.
- 21:47When the Giants come to town, he starts swinging, and there was no doubt about that one.
- 21:53So it's 2-0. The error, off the run, and the Giants are behind 2-0, and Ron Sato is about it.
- 22:04Fastball low for ball one.
- 22:16So the Cubs in front, 2-0.
- 22:20Billy Williams really tattooed them.
- 22:26Sato hitting 221.
- 22:29Fastball striking one-on-one.
- 22:44Sadecki working to the right-hand batting Sato, the one-one pitch.
- 22:48Strike two, fastball good on the outside.
- 22:58Bertha didn't move in right field when he saw it was high enough it wasn't going to kill him.
- 23:08One-two pitch to Sato, curve in the dirt, and it's 2-2.
- 23:25The Giants with a sign on the target for Sadecki. 2-2 pitch, curve in the dirt, ball three, full count, 3-2.
- 23:41Kessinger's truck out, Beckert's safe on Hethreed's throwing error, and then Billy Williams
- 23:48tagged one over the right field fence to make it 2-0 Chicago.
- 23:553-2 pitch, bounded to Hethreed. He has it, his throw on target, and that's number two.
- 24:04Ernie Banks up here now. Banks hitting 264.
- 24:15Banks needs one more RBI to reach the 1,500 mark in his career. He has 19 this year.
- 24:25Pitch to Ernie, curve is high for a ball, 1-0.
- 24:31We wish Ernie a lot of luck, but I hope that 1,500th RBI comes tomorrow.
- 24:431-0 pitch, popped up on the infield. Mason drifting around after this one as it twists away from him in the wind.
- 24:50Now he makes the catch for the third out.
- 24:54For the Cubs, two runs, one hit, one error, no one left off.
- 24:59And at the end of one inning, the Cubs 2, the Giants nothing.
- 25:07If I need some help, I'll know just where to find me.
- 25:14With the yellow pages in my heart.
- 25:21With the yellow pages in my heart.
- 25:37And that's oh so right, friends. The yellow pages of your phone book are just about the best guide to products and services you can find.
- 25:46For example, let's say you're looking for a brand distributor or a particular item that's hard to find.
- 25:52Or maybe you're shopping for the best rental price on some kind of equipment.
- 25:57What's the fastest, easiest way to find these things? With your telephone, of course.
- 26:03Next time you go shopping, check the yellow pages first and let your telephone do the work for you.
- 26:11Inning number two, Allen Virginia Silver, which to say hello to their friends in the Bay Area.
- 26:16They used to live there.
- 26:20Allen Virginia, say hi-ho.
- 26:25We go to the second. And here is Bill Thompson.
- 26:30Up that are batting Bob Burda leading off against left-back Eric Kenny Oldsman.
- 26:34Makes a fastball for his strike.
- 26:39Burda batting at 345.
- 26:43Ken hits 29 chips to the plate.
- 26:46Oldsman back to the plate. Breaking pitch for a strike.
- 26:52Sonoma Dukat on Burda.
- 27:00Go to pitch outside with a fastball for ball one.
- 27:05He's not in the stands because of the injury situation.
- 27:09Forced to go with a number of left-handed batters against the left-hander Oldsman.
- 27:16Which is just outside for ball two.
- 27:20Oldsman and Burda go even at 2-2.
- 27:302-2 windup. Curve, got her to the right side.
- 27:33Good hop, throws quickly to first.
- 27:35And plenty of time to get Burda for out number one.
- 27:44Going shopping, you'll find the yellow pages of your phone book.
- 27:47Your best guide to the products and services available in your area.
- 27:57Don Mason, the second baseman, another left-handed batter against Oldsman.
- 28:02Runs up to front, takes the pitch, and it's a called strike.
- 28:07Mason at 286. 12 hits, 42 trips to the plate, four RBIs.
- 28:17Half ball is high from Oldsman.
- 28:20One-on-one, the count on Don Mason.
- 28:28Oldsman back to the plate. Mrs. Lowen away off Hundley's glove.
- 28:31It skips back to the stands.
- 28:36So Oldsman drops behind on the count to Mason.
- 28:38Two balls and one strike.
- 28:47Pitch is lined in the center field for a base hit.
- 28:50Mason, around first, holds on.
- 28:53Phillips throws back in the second base.
- 28:58The defense have base hit number three.
- 29:03The battle will be shortstop Hal Lanier.
- 29:05Hal batting at 204.
- 29:07Switch hitter will be batting right-handed against Oldsman.
- 29:11Hal has 20 hits and 98 trips to the plate.
- 29:13He's driven in six runs.
- 29:19Sun breaks through here again.
- 29:21Oldsman's clear ball bounded up the middle.
- 29:23Gassner has it close to Becker. One back to first double play.
- 29:30Hal Lanier bounces into the short second first double play.
- 29:33Switch to four to three to retire to the side.
- 29:40For the Giants in the second, no runs on one hit.
- 29:44No cup errors and no runners left on.
- 29:47At the end of an inning and a half, the Cubs 2 and the Giants nothing.
- 29:52One of the biggest jobs facing a major league manager is seeing that he gets the maximum out of his ballclub.
- 29:57Makes the most efficient use of his material and the results can pay off in a pennant.
- 30:02Provided, of course, that he has the right material.
- 30:04Well, there's a parallel between a baseball manager's job and an office manager's job.
- 30:09A man in business has to get the most out of his people and his equipment.
- 30:13And that's where the telephone company can help you.
- 30:15They'll provide the expert services of a communications consultant to check out your present telephone system
- 30:21and see if it meets your company's needs.
- 30:23A communications consultant can often help you solve business problems, speed up your operation,
- 30:28and help grow profits, all by showing you how to make maximum efficient use of your communications system.
- 30:33Or perhaps by recommending new and improved systems.
- 30:36It won't cost you a thing to find out, so make a note now to call your local telephone business office.
- 30:41There's no extra cost or obligation for the experience and service of your communications consultant.
- 30:47Thank you.
- 30:55The Cubs catcher, Randy Hundley, laid off the bottom of the second.
- 31:20Randy stands in and Sadecki winds him over.
- 31:42Randy Hundley, it's his fifth home run of the season.
- 31:45The Cubs lead it 3-0.
- 31:48Two run homer by Billy Williams in the first.
- 31:50Now, Hundley is homer here in the second.
- 31:54The Cub batter will be Jim Hickman, the right fielder, batting at 1-33.
- 32:04Sadecki's first pitch to Hickman, a fastball low for ball one.
- 32:19Sadecki to the plate.
- 32:21Breaking pitch in the dirt, bounce off high at the shoulder.
- 32:25Two feet away from him, he retrieves, but Lee Weier, the plate umpire, puts a new baseball in play.
- 32:32So Sadecki behind on Hickman, two balls and no strikes.
- 32:44Sadecki to the plate, fastball way high outside for ball three.
- 32:57Three and nothing got on Jim Hickman.
- 33:02Sadecki cranks up, comes to the plate.
- 33:05Fastball called strike.
- 33:07Ray in on the count of three and one.
- 33:10And there Billy Williams home run in the first inning, puts Sadecki behind two to nothing.
- 33:13Now, Hundley is homer here in the second with the Cubs lead three to nothing.
- 33:24Last pitch, fastball foul back to the screen.
- 33:28That count goes full at three and two.
- 33:46Hickman out of the batter's box, now back in.
- 33:49Sadecki with a long look to high at, first time for the three-two pitch.
- 33:55Ray still looking in.
- 33:58Now starts another motion.
- 34:00Playoff pitch.
- 34:01Curve, looped in the right center field.
- 34:04Racing over his bird, it's those bonds, it drops in for a base hit.
- 34:10Looping fly ball in the right center field.
- 34:13Bell in front in between, bonds and birdie.
- 34:20There will be activity for the Giants in the full pen as Rich Robertson will start loosening up.
- 34:25Adolfo Phillips will be the Cubs batter.
- 34:28Adolfo was just one hit and 16 times at bat in 063 average.
- 34:34Broke his wrist in spring training, so trying to play regularly and back in his shape.
- 34:38Right in the batter, lumps the front, takes low.
- 34:41First bounce is out in front of the plate, as Hyatt blocks the low curve ball.
- 34:45Kept it in front of him, no chance for Hickman to move up.
- 34:50Jazz with Everett at third, Lanier at short, Mason at second, Davin Bort at first.
- 34:54Outfield from left to right, Henderson, bonds and birdie.
- 35:00Hickman at first.
- 35:05But nobody out, a run in.
- 35:07Cubs leading 3-0 in the bottom of the second. Sudecky to the plate, fast ball, pop foul.
- 35:11It will be out of play into the seat and back of the Giants, Doug Hyatt.
- 35:16One and one to count on Phillips.
- 35:32Sudecky looking into Hyatt.
- 35:37Hickman with a pretty good lead at first base.
- 35:40Sudecky to the plate, curve, Phillips bluffs the front, the pitch almost hit him in the feet.
- 35:45He has to jump out of the way and Hyatt blocks the pitch again.
- 35:51A count on Phillips, two balls and one strike.
- 35:56Rich Robertson throwing to the Giants in the right field goal pen.
- 36:07Sudecky steps it away, Hickman with his lead from first.
- 36:10Pitch to Phillips, fast ball, a check swing, a roller to second.
- 36:13Mason to Lanier, one, back to first, double play.
- 36:17And awful Phillips, extremely tough to double up.
- 36:22The Giants get the double play, Mason, to Lanier, to Davenport.
- 36:35Ken Holtzman will be the cut spotter, the pitcher.
- 36:38Holtzman normally a pretty good hitter, has only one hit this season and 21 trips.
- 36:46Takes low on inside and the dirt as a matter of fact for ball one.
- 36:51Holtzman batting right handed against the Giants left hander, Ray Sudecky.
- 37:04Ray back to the plate, fast ball, inside at the knees for ball two.
- 37:10So Sudecky behind on Richard Ken Holtzman, two balls and no strikes.
- 37:16Holtzman takes a look at third base coach Rube Walker.
- 37:20I don't think he'll be allowed to swing on a do or nothing pitch.
- 37:27Sudecky misses high and outside with a fast ball for ball three.
- 37:31Ray way behind on the pitcher, Holtzman, three balls and no strikes.
- 37:36Two outs, the bases empty, a run in here on the bottom of the second as the Cubs now lead three to nothing.
- 37:41Three out pitch, fast ball, good for his strike.
- 37:56Three one pitch to Ken Holtzman, taken low for ball four.
- 38:05So Sudecky walks the pitcher, gives up his first walk.
- 38:13The tough batter will be the shortstop, Don Kessinger as Holtzman puts on the warmup jacket at first.
- 38:22The pitcher struck out his first time.
- 38:39Sudecky to the plate, curve ball, bound it toward second base.
- 38:42Mason up with it, flips to Lanier for the fourth on Holtzman and the side is retired.
- 38:47Before the Cubs in the second, one run, two hits, no giant errors, one runner left on.
- 38:52At the end of two, the Cubs three, the Giants nothing.
- 38:57It's a warm and inviting, white sandy beach.
- 39:03It's as friendly as an invitation to an island newer.
- 39:09And it's calling you, come to Shevron Island, near to where you are.
- 39:17A friendly kind of island with fresh spirit for your car.
- 39:24Shevron Island, warm, inviting, friendly.
- 39:29With fresh spirit for your car and a refreshing pause for you.
- 39:33When you're out driving, watch for Shevron Island.
- 39:37Listen, come to Shevron Island, near to where you are.
- 39:51Come to Shevron Island under the standard sun.
- 39:55You'll like our spirit.
- 40:03Holtzman at the pitch at the top of any number three, but a play by Blair again is long.
- 40:10Ray Sadecki will lead off. Ray has failed to hit this year's ten trips.
- 40:32Sadecki up there.
- 40:39Left-hander against left-hander.
- 40:43Mr. Ray has lined up the right field for a base hit, so Sadecki has his first hit.
- 40:48A solid line drive to right.
- 40:52And he's on at first base with nobody out at the top of the batting order.
- 40:56Comes up, Bobby Bond will lead off.
- 41:01Sadecki at first.
- 41:03In the leadoff batter, Bobby Bond struck out his first time.
- 41:06Giants are short-handed by one man today as Bobby Martin has been suspended for three days.
- 41:14For leaving the club the other day.
- 41:18Leaving the ballpark.
- 41:21Pitched to Bond. Swung on and missed the curve ball he didn't get. Strike one.
- 41:30Giants trail three to nothing, top of the third. Sadecki at first.
- 41:34Last ball, strike two called to Bond.
- 41:39And it's O and two.
- 41:43So Holtzman has an O2 count on the Giants center fielder Bond.
- 41:48Etheridge due next. The O2 pitch outside for a ball and it's one and two.
- 41:54Holtzman doesn't waste any time. He gets the ball and throws it over the plate.
- 42:01Sadecki hits the first pitch for a single. He's at first with no one out.
- 42:07Curve, struck him out.
- 42:11The Bond strikes out for his second time.
- 42:15For Bond, that's the 30th time he's struck out this season.
- 42:21And Bobby Etheridge will be up here flying to center his first time.
- 42:30Strikeout number two for Holtzman. It's been Bond's each time.
- 42:38Cubs have completed a double play behind Holtzman so far.
- 42:42Curve is low at Etheridge.
- 42:45Here Mason singled with one out in the second. Lanier bounced into a double play.
- 42:56Last ball is called a strike. It's a nade on the inside and it's one and one.
- 43:11Bond on a strike to the right hand batting Bobby Etheridge. He's deep in the batter's box.
- 43:15His right foot naturally out of the batter's box.
- 43:19Take the fastball, strike two called.
- 43:22That one over the outside corner.
- 43:24Now Holtzman has a one and two count.
- 43:29Sadecki singled to open the inning. Bond struck out. Now Holtzman is ahead of Etheridge, one and two.
- 43:36Swing and a miss. He's struck him out.
- 43:40Third strikeout for Holtzman and Davenport is up there. He singled his first time.
- 43:45Remember your Sheppard National Credit Card is good as more than Sheppard Island.
- 43:49Now it's good at Hertz. And for lodging and related services at Ramada Ends and Howard Johnson's Motor Lodge.
- 43:57Davenport singled his first time up here with two down and Sadecki at first.
- 44:01Three to nothing the Cubs lead. Two run homer in the first by Billy Williams.
- 44:04Williams is solo homer by Hundley in the second. Fastball strike to Davenport.
- 44:20Fastball strike two.
- 44:31Holtzman not throwing many bad ones. He gets them all over the place.
- 44:36The O2 pitch blowing away for one and two.
- 44:44Two down. Sadecki at first base. The Giants trail three to nothing.
- 44:55And the one-two pitch swung on and looped into short center. Phillips comes on.
- 45:01Takes a dieting pass.
- 45:07A great dieting pass for Rob Davenport.
- 45:12And for the Giants, no runs on one here.
- 45:17No errors. The runner left on. We go to the bottom of the third with the Cubs leading three to nothing.
- 45:24The first by Billy Williams is solo homer by Hundley in the second.
- 45:28Fastball strike to Davenport.
- 45:41Fastball strike two.
- 45:53Holtzman not throwing many bad ones. He gets them all over the place.
- 45:58The O2 pitch blowing away for one and two.
- 46:06Two down. Sadecki at first base. The Giants trail three to nothing.
- 46:18And the one-two pitch swung on and looped into short center. Phillips comes on.
- 46:24Takes a dieting pass.
- 46:30Phillips with a great dieting pass for Rob Davenport.
- 46:35And for the Giants, no runs on one here.
- 46:41No errors. The runner left on. We go to the bottom of the third with the Cubs leading three to nothing.
- 46:49Friends, just think how much fun being marooned on an island could be, especially if it's sunny, sunly Chevron Island.
- 46:56And especially if you had a Chevron National Credit Card, you'd be sent.
- 47:01Because your Chevron credit card would be good for just about everything you need.
- 47:05Not just gasoline, oil, tires, batteries and accessories, but for lodging, meals, even car rentals.
- 47:12For example, the Chevron credit card is honored by Sir Howard Johnson's Motor Lodges and LaMotta Inn.
- 47:18No wonder more Westerners carry a Chevron National Credit Card than any other.
- 47:23So come to Chevron Island under the Sanders sign and apply for your Chevron National Credit Card today.
- 47:29And see how much fun an island can be.
- 47:34The spirit of Chevron Island is calling you.
- 47:37Come to Chevron Island, near to where you are.
- 47:43A friendly kind of island with fresh spirits for your car.
- 47:49Come to Chevron Island under the Sanders sign.
- 48:04Glenn Beckert for a leadoff. He was safe on average error his first time up.
- 48:10And then Williams followed up with a two run homer, Humbley homered in the second.
- 48:14So the Cubs lead three to nothing.
- 48:17Beckert a right hand batter against Zay Sadecki.
- 48:21Sadecki and Waberta moves over into position in right field.
- 48:35Sadecki works to Beckert.
- 48:37And a line drive to Mason in second base.
- 48:47Billy Williams did his second home run of the year.
- 48:50And that's amazing when you see this guy the way he hits against the Giants.
- 48:53You find out it's just late in the year and he only had one home run before he got it.
- 49:01He's really unhappy that he's lost six games against the Giants.
- 49:06A deep drive to right center field.
- 49:08But Bond has room on this one.
- 49:10He waits to make the catch for the second out.
- 49:14So Williams flies out to Bond.
- 49:16We'll pause for station identification.
- 49:18It's the Golden West Radio Network.
- 49:20This is KSFO in San Francisco.
- 49:23The California Highway Patrol has found the southbound Bayshore Freeway has been reopened to regular traffic.
- 49:29No detour in effect.
- 49:36Ron Sato throwing out by S-Ridge his first time up.
- 49:42Sadecki here with two down and the bases empty.
- 49:45Threat or nothing, the catch is late.
- 49:48A let up is high and away for a ball 1-0.
- 49:53Atlanta 2, Philadelphia nothing.
- 49:55Philadelphia batting at the bottom of the fifth.
- 50:00Anybody on?
- 50:02Eisel is just home run for Philadelphia with the bases empty.
- 50:06That one's 2-1 at least.
- 50:12Curve misses to Sato and it's ball 2.
- 50:17Houston leads the Mets 4-1.
- 50:21The Mets are at the bottom of the seventh.
- 50:26St. Louis 1, San Diego nothing after 2.
- 50:30Cleveland 2, the White Sox 1 after 4.
- 50:34Fastball strikes to Sato 2-1.
- 50:37Baltimore 1, Kansas City nothing after 3.
- 50:40Minnesota failed to score on the top half of the first against Detroit.
- 50:47Sadecki for a run in the fifth after five innings.
- 50:51It's Atlanta 2, Philadelphia 1.
- 50:572-1 count to Ron Sato with two outs.
- 51:00The bases empty.
- 51:02Cut 3, the Giants nada.
- 51:12Sadecki's 2-1 bet.
- 51:14Swung on it.
- 51:15Fastball up about the letters over the outside.
- 51:18Sato didn't get it.
- 51:23Even at 2-2.
- 51:32Sadecki slowing the pace now ready to work to Sato.
- 51:372-2 pit.
- 51:39Fastball outside for a full count of 3 and 2.
- 51:49Giants head for Pittsburgh.
- 51:54Gaylord Perry scheduled to work tomorrow night.
- 52:01Sadecki's delivery.
- 52:08Walk number 2 by Sadecki.
- 52:12Sato at first and Ernie Banks will get the batter.
- 52:16Banks popped up to Mason at second base his first time.
- 52:25Sadecki working from the stretch.
- 52:27Robertson goes to work in the bullpen.
- 52:29Sadecki's high and outside for a ball and high and he was
- 52:32about to talk to it.
- 52:34Rich Robertson starts to loosen in the bullpen.
- 52:36He was working last inning.
- 52:43Cut 3, Giants nothing.
- 52:45A pair of home runs by Billy Williams.
- 52:47A two-run shot on that first and a solo job in the second.
- 52:54And they weren't cheap home runs in Chicago.
- 52:56They were smashed.
- 53:06Sato is lead at first.
- 53:08The 1-0 count to Ernie Banks.
- 53:11Herb is a strike and it's a 1-1.
- 53:18Looks as though this one will be completed today.
- 53:23There are clouds around but it just doesn't look like it's
- 53:26going to rain.
- 53:27Sunshiney now at Wrigley Field.
- 53:29The 1-1 pitch.
- 53:30Herb Lowell for ball 2.
- 53:35Bill Thompson says it certainly looks like it's going to rain.
- 53:48Q1 count to Banks.
- 53:50The 1-1 pitch.
- 53:53One on a high fly ball in the short left.
- 53:55Lanier drips back.
- 53:56Howe calling for it.
- 53:57As Henderson comes in, look out collision and Henderson just
- 53:59gets out of his way as Lanier makes the catch.
- 54:03Henderson was storming in under that one but toss right of
- 54:06Lanier just in time to avoid it.
- 54:08No runs, no hits, no errors.
- 54:10The runner left off.
- 54:12At the end of 3-4, the Cubs lead it by a score of 3-0.
- 54:18An Asselin, the first number doubleheader, using the

- 54:43Woody Pilon for the Phils.
- 54:45Murray Heisel homered in the 5th for Philadelphia.
- 54:49A couple of rainouts.
- 54:51Los Angeles to Pittsburgh and Cincinnati to Montreal.
- 54:54Both of those canceled because of rain, cold weather, and wet
- 54:57grounds, as they say.
- 54:59The two innings, San Luis, one San Diego nothing.
- 55:02Kirby pitching for San Diego and James Justy for the Cardinals.
- 55:05In the American League, Baltimore won Kansas City nothing
- 55:08after three.
- 55:09Nelton for the Royals and Palmer for Baltimore.
- 55:13Cleveland leading Chicago 2-1, going to the top of the 5th.
- 55:17But rookie Carlos Mea did an eight-hole run out of the air
- 55:19with a runner on for the White Sox in that 5th, so they need
- 55:21at least three to two.
- 55:23Minnesota failed to score in the top of the first at Detroit.
- 55:26Cox pitching for Minnesota, playing for the Tigers.
- 55:30Heather Kingsley, later starts New York at open,
- 55:32Boston at California, Wesson at Seattle.
- 55:34This one has gone three-fold.
- 55:36The Cubs lead at three to nothing.
- 55:37For the play-by-play, here is Les Hodges.
- 55:40How are you doing, everybody?
- 55:42Johnny Henderson will lead off, followed by Jack Hyatt
- 55:44and Bob Berda.
- 55:47Against left-hander Ken Holson, Henderson takes low
- 55:49and inside for a ball.
- 55:52The Giants are out hitting the Cubs, but the Cubs are really
- 55:55going for the long ball today.
- 55:57Henderson has one for one.
- 55:59Here's the pitch, high for ball two.
- 56:0612, no strike.
- 56:12Holson winds.
- 56:14Henderson nails it to shortstop.
- 56:16Two big hops to Kessinger.
- 56:18Over to first base for out number one.
- 56:24Jack Hyatt, the Giants batter now.
- 56:34Here's Kessinger, who's flied out to short center
- 56:36his last time.
- 56:44Strike 12 on the inside.
- 56:51Holson with four wins, one defeat.
- 56:53The throws.
- 56:55Hyatt looks at a high pitch for a ball
- 56:57on the count of one and one.
- 57:09So Huntley gives the target, Holson throws.
- 57:12Too high to Hyatt for ball two and a strike.
- 57:22Stay around, blue sky.
- 57:30Here's the 2-1 pitch.
- 57:32Hyatt takes the strike on the inside corner.
- 57:35Holson, one of the fastest workers around.
- 57:39He doesn't stand around there very long.
- 57:43He gets himself warm and wants to stay warm,
- 57:45and he throws two and two, and Hyatt takes strike three.
- 57:58Bob Purdy will be the batter now,
- 58:00two down, the base is sappy on the top of the fourth inning.
- 58:20The pitch to Burda, little one outside.
- 58:22Bob playing right field today.
- 58:31Holson throws.
- 58:32Burda swings, breaks the batter,
- 58:34he pops shortly to second base.
- 58:36And that's all she wrote on the top of the fourth inning.
- 58:39No runs, no hits, no errors.
- 58:42Nobody left on, and we move to the bottom of inning number four
- 58:45with the score of the ballgame, the Chicago Cubs 3,
- 58:48the San Francisco Giants up it.
- 58:53Wake up, honey.
- 58:55After driving all night, we finally reached Wyrika.
- 58:58Wyrika?
- 59:00I thought we were going to Eureka.
- 59:02No, no, no.
- 59:03Remember, Alice said to go to Wyrika,
- 59:05then take the highway east.
- 59:07No, it was Eureka, and we take the highway south.
- 59:14The best way to make sure you get to the place you set out for
- 59:17is to come to Seven Islands First,
- 59:19a seven-travel service,
- 59:21a free trip planning service that gives you helpful information
- 59:24on where to stay and things to do along the way.
- 59:28You'll get highway logs, especially marked labs,
- 59:31cut up today by pro-itikers from the U.S. Weather Bureau.
- 59:35To get your friend's seven-travel tickets,
- 59:37ask for a travel request card
- 59:39from any seven-dealer or standard station.
- 59:43Then when you set out for Eureka, you'll end up in Eureka.
- 59:47Music.
- 1:00:14Chicago, a game that would have been a sellout,
- 1:00:18but the weather has just been as bad as you've ever seen it.
- 1:00:23And you've not seen bad weather until you've been to Chicago.
- 1:00:27Sadecki curves, Randy Huntley.
- 1:00:32Call the strike.
- 1:00:40Ray throws again to the plate and Huntley takes low and inside
- 1:00:44for a ball one.
- 1:00:48Ball on the strike.
- 1:00:59Huntley is a great hitter at Rigby Field in Chicago
- 1:01:02with his short fences.
- 1:01:04And Sadecki delivers to Randy.
- 1:01:06There's a bouncing ball hit near second.
- 1:01:08The ball is over for the stop to throw.
- 1:01:11The Jimmy Davenport in time for our number one.
- 1:01:17Jim Hekman, the right fielder,
- 1:01:20will be the batter now with a golf ball finish to follow.
- 1:01:34Sadecki delivers to Hekman.
- 1:01:36A golf strike on the inside corner.
- 1:01:45Hekman wearing number 28 hit a 3-2 pitch for a single to center
- 1:01:48his last time.
- 1:01:51Sadecki throws it in.
- 1:01:52Hekman takes it low for a ball on a count of one and one.
- 1:01:568-0 Chicago on the bottom of the fourth inning.
- 1:02:10Now the wind up to throw one and one.
- 1:02:12Sadecki delivers.
- 1:02:13Hekman swings, fouls it back.
- 1:02:20So the count is one ball and two strikes.
- 1:02:33Here's Ray delivering.
- 1:02:35Hekman bounds it to shortstop when air jumps on it.
- 1:02:39Throw a blow to first.
- 1:02:40Davenport makes the grab and it's down number two.
- 1:02:44You know there's a lively little island nearby.
- 1:02:47That's Shevin Island on the standard side.
- 1:02:53You'll like the spirit.
- 1:02:56Adolfo Phillips grounded into a double play his last time
- 1:02:59on a fastball hit.
- 1:03:01He's fat and rolled toward second and he was easily doubled up.
- 1:03:06Sadecki throws to the center fielder, a high curve for ball one.
- 1:03:13Right-handed hitter, left-handed pitcher.
- 1:03:22And Sadecki fires again.
- 1:03:24Phillips takes high and it's ball two in those strikes.
- 1:03:28Ray Herba will do some pitching for the Giants.
- 1:03:40Ron Herba's got him to throw for the Giants.
- 1:03:42Here's the two and 0 delivery low and inside for ball three.
- 1:03:48Three and 0 to count.
- 1:03:55Holtzman will follow.
- 1:03:57Sadecki behind Phillips who might have the green light.
- 1:04:01Ray misses low and inside for ball four.
- 1:04:05His third base on ball.
- 1:04:10And here is Holtzman who received French pre-transportation
- 1:04:13the last time.
- 1:04:16The blue sky has disappeared.
- 1:04:21Home plate dusted off by Lee Weir.
- 1:04:26Holtzman number 30 waiting.
- 1:04:28Phillips to press his heel at first.
- 1:04:30He checks him over there and throws to Holtzman who swings.
- 1:04:34Then the soft fly ball to short center coming in easily
- 1:04:37as Bobby Fon.
- 1:04:40That's out number three.
- 1:04:41No runs, no hits, no errors.
- 1:04:43One left on and at the end of four full innings in Chicago,
- 1:04:47the Cubs lead and the score is Chicago 3 to Giants up.
- 1:04:52When your battery finally decides to give up the ghost,
- 1:04:55does it choose a nice sunny spot next to Shevin Island under
- 1:04:58the standard sign?
- 1:04:59No, sir.
- 1:05:01It usually picks a place a thousand miles from nowhere and
- 1:05:04always at the wrong time.
- 1:05:05That's why most cars should be equipped with nothing less than
- 1:05:08an extra capacity heavy duty battery,
- 1:05:11a battery like the all new Atlas PhD.
- 1:05:14This battery is so tough, so dependable that it carries a
- 1:05:18full five year warranty and an absolute free replacement
- 1:05:21within the first year.
- 1:05:23What makes the Atlas PhD such an outstanding battery?
- 1:05:26It's the polypropylene container which allows 12 percent more
- 1:05:30room for acid in plates than in conventional batteries.
- 1:05:34So this extra volume results in amazingly long battery life
- 1:05:39and tough power ready performance and more starting
- 1:05:42power under all weather conditions.
- 1:05:44So get the battery that's guaranteed to perform.
- 1:05:48The new Atlas PhD battery at Shevin Island under the standard
- 1:05:52sign.
- 1:06:00The next car leading off will be Don Mason followed by Hal Reiner
- 1:06:05and Ray Sedecky or a pinch hitter if there is a storing
- 1:06:08opportunity as Herb O.
- 1:06:12Loosens in the bullpen.
- 1:06:24Here's the pitch to Mason, low and inside.
- 1:06:35They want a note of every strike call of the nation on the
- 1:06:38outside one and one.
- 1:06:47Both of them close, Mason swings, Mason hits the right
- 1:06:54field.
- 1:06:55It's a short line drive over the head of the first baseman.
- 1:06:57Al LeMur will be the giant spiker.
- 1:07:13The first baseman, Al Reiner, takes off his jacket and it's
- 1:07:18raining a bit.
- 1:07:21But it doesn't appear that a cloud burst is in the offing.
- 1:07:24Here's the double play ground ball, hits the shortstop.
- 1:07:27Sedecky will back for himself.
- 1:07:37So LeMur has seen two pitches and hit him in the two double
- 1:07:40plays.
- 1:07:42He's single to right his last time up.
- 1:07:52Both of them close, Sedecky takes the fastball, a self strike.
- 1:08:00On one account and the next delivery.
- 1:08:03Blowing away for a ball on account of one and one.
- 1:08:13One and one pitch, slow curve inside, ball two and a strike.
- 1:08:25Two and one to race Sedecky.
- 1:08:27Tom Kenholzman, who throws and Sedecky looks at a call strike
- 1:08:33for two and two.
- 1:08:44Now the two and two pitch.
- 1:08:46Sedecky strikes out swing, the side is retired.
- 1:08:49It's now a legal ballgame.
- 1:08:52No runs, one hit, no errors.

- 1:11:00It's the deck he sets to throw.
- 1:11:03He delivers.
- 1:11:04Beckett swings, bounces the deep shot,
- 1:11:06and then has a long throw.
- 1:11:08But gets the ball there in time.
- 1:11:10And then the third base line is on the perfect builder,

- 1:12:50Now at Ruth Atkins.
- 1:12:53You suffer, you suffer.
- 1:12:55Now we're set for the top of inning number six.
- 1:12:58Bill Thompson will report the action.
- 1:13:01Dias to the top of the order against Ken Olsen,
- 1:13:05Bobby Bonds, Bob Epstein, and Jim Davenport.
- 1:13:15Bonds over two has struck out twice in inning number one and again in the third.
- 1:13:19They co-sign with the
- 1:13:20first pitch, low for ball one.
- 1:13:30Olsen to the plate, breaking pitch, lying in the center field,
- 1:13:33in front of Phillips for a base hit.
- 1:13:35Bonds, it's a solid shot in the center field.
- 1:13:39That does his sixth pitch.
- 1:13:45Bob Epstein goes over two, flies to center in the first,
- 1:13:48struck out in the third, will be the dance batter.
- 1:13:54Bonds held it first by Banks for Olsen, looks good, comes to the plate,
- 1:13:59and then he's got a little bit of a
- 1:14:03little bit of a
- 1:14:08little bit of a break.
- 1:14:10Olsen looks good, comes to the plate, breaking pitch, low on inside,
- 1:14:13football one, and suddenly skids on his knees to make the save.
- 1:14:24Olsen, although left-handed by his own emissions,
- 1:14:27says he has a bad pick-up move at first base.
- 1:14:29Line drive, pass back, we're going to right field for a base hit.
- 1:14:32Bonds racing around second, he'll go to third.
- 1:14:35He'll do every told on it first.
- 1:14:40The Giants get back to back singles to open up the sixth
- 1:14:43from Bonds and Etridge.
- 1:14:45They have runners at first and third with nobody else.
- 1:14:49The batter will be first baseman Jim Davenport.
- 1:14:51Singles to center in the first, flies to center in the third.
- 1:14:55Cubs bullpen starts steering around,
- 1:14:58and the fans start turning around as the rain starts to fall.
- 1:15:12Cubs by the infield, double play, Jepes.
- 1:15:16Olsen sets delivers to Davenport.
- 1:15:18Foul ball low for ball one.
- 1:15:20On deck for the Giants, left fielder Kenny Henderson.
- 1:15:25Left-hander Hank Aguri and right-hander Ted Abernathy
- 1:15:28start going for the Cubs.
- 1:15:31Pitch to Davenport, foul ball, foul to the screen.
- 1:15:34Jim had a good cut, foul to straight back.
- 1:15:45Rain now coming down pretty good.
- 1:15:49Pitch to Davenport, foul to the screen again for side two.
- 1:15:55For those of you who have been listening for a while,
- 1:15:57now who's right, Lon Simmons or me?
- 1:16:10The one two pitch from Kenny Olsen,
- 1:16:12high and outside, almost a wild pitch.
- 1:16:14It's Huntley at his Sabbath.
- 1:16:24Olsen and Davenport go even at two and two.
- 1:16:26Bonds at third, every pitch first.
- 1:16:28Nobody out, Giants trail three to nothing in the sixth.
- 1:16:31They're having a dirt dug out by Huntley.
- 1:16:33Olsen goes out to a full count.
- 1:16:45Looks like the rain's starting to let up a little bit now.
- 1:16:54Two runners lead, the three-two pitch to Davenport.
- 1:16:57Mopped up, foul, out of play.
- 1:17:03Back into the lower deck, Giants first base.
- 1:17:12So the situation remains the same,
- 1:17:14a full count, three balls and two strikes.
- 1:17:17On Jim Davenport with Bobby Bonds at third,
- 1:17:20Bob Everett at first, Olsen at sixth.
- 1:17:23Foul away again,
- 1:17:24off to the right, this time into the upper deck.
- 1:17:33Suds in the odd field, straight away against Davenport.
- 1:17:45Boltsman during the Huntley-Brizzines.
- 1:17:48The left-hander, Suds, comes to the plate.
- 1:17:50Curve, called, site three.
- 1:17:58Olsen gets his sixth site out.
- 1:18:02The batter for the Giants will be Kenny Henderson.
- 1:18:05Single to right in the first,
- 1:18:06ground to the short in the fourth.
- 1:18:08Kenny, one foot two.
- 1:18:14Boltsman and Huntley have a bit of a conversation,
- 1:18:20long-range conversation.
- 1:18:21It was only just a couple of steps in front of the plate.
- 1:18:27Henderson batting right-handed against left-hander,
- 1:18:30Olsen with Bonds leads it down the line at third.
- 1:18:32Epric moves away from first.
- 1:18:33It's the Kenny, a curve, first strike.
- 1:18:48Olsen's sixth, curve outside.
- 1:19:03One-and-one the guy on Kenny Henderson.
- 1:19:09Two-runner's late, Olsen's set,
- 1:19:10a curve, ground into a batto at third.
- 1:19:12He comes to the plate,
- 1:19:14it's got Bonds spotting her run down.
- 1:19:16She's batto-chasing and towards the plate,
- 1:19:18throws to Holkman to catch him out.
- 1:19:30A very unusual play on the part of Ron Sauer.
- 1:19:32It appeared he had a double playboy,
- 1:19:34threw him at third base,
- 1:19:36but he made the decision to come to the plate.
- 1:19:38They got Bonds in a run down,
- 1:19:41with Epric just moving to second
- 1:19:43and Henderson taking over first on the field of choice.
- 1:19:48Olsen getting the put-out on that play,
- 1:19:50up to plate for the run down.
- 1:19:53They went Sano to Hundley,
- 1:19:55back to Sano and to Holkman.
- 1:19:57So, 5-2-5-1 if you have the decision to score.
- 1:19:59Here's Jack Hyde, it was 0-2.
- 1:20:02Wide out from the first,
- 1:20:03just called out on the strike from the fourth.
- 1:20:05Epric just second, Henderson at first,
- 1:20:07now with two outs,
- 1:20:09Olsen to the plate, curve ball,
- 1:20:10popped up in the right-center field,
- 1:20:12back goes Becker,
- 1:20:13in comes Phillips on the run,
- 1:20:15here's Hickman,
- 1:20:16Hickman calls and makes the catch.
- 1:20:18The right fielder makes the jab,
- 1:20:20then we got his side.
- 1:20:22So, the Giants' threat goes to Glummering.
- 1:20:26From the top of the sixth, no runs,
- 1:20:28two hits, leadoff singles by Bonds and Epric.
- 1:20:31No scubs to her, two runners left on.
- 1:20:34At the end of 5-1-1-2,
- 1:20:37the scubs continue to lead the Giants,
- 1:20:39by a score of 3-0.
- 1:20:40Another game, the National League,
- 1:20:42first game with double header,
- 1:20:44after eight full innings,
- 1:20:46Houston leads New York 4-1.

- 1:21:34Later starts New York at Oakland, Washington at California,
- 1:21:37Washington at Seattle.

- 1:21:42Ron Santareller leads off,
- 1:21:44Will Paz for station identification,
- 1:21:46this is the Golden West Radio Network.
- 1:21:49Not thought that we're in competition with Russians or with Chinese peanuts.
- 1:21:55It's for the Bayes. It's trivial.
- 1:21:58The Boston Globe says it may be the most important speech of our time.
- 1:22:01Hear it on the Sunday special, 8-05 PM on KSFO San Francisco.

- 1:22:18a fastball for a strike.
- 1:22:21The 0-1 pitch from Sadecki,
- 1:22:23close curve line to center field,
- 1:22:25J-6,
- 1:22:26Ossov to cut it off.

- 1:23:43Mr. and Mrs. Warren Peterson are here in Chicago
- 1:23:46and again send their wishes to the Giant Bluesters,
- 1:23:48rather than Dr. Menno.
- 1:23:54Sano away from second.

- 1:24:20Goes to strike two.
- 1:24:24I have dropped the ball.
- 1:24:25I have trouble finding it.
- 1:24:27Menno, I want to take a chance of going anywhere from second base.
- 1:24:32Cubs got two in the first on an error and Billy Williams home run
- 1:24:35and Randy Humbert in the second innings.
- 1:24:38That's the way it stands now.

- 1:25:08Off to the right on a play.
- 1:25:09Back into the lower deck.
- 1:25:11See some good signs winter-wise.
- 1:25:13Over the left field fence it appears to be brighter.
- 1:25:18Rain has almost stopped now.
- 1:25:20The wind is not as bad as it was a few moments ago.
- 1:25:25Three-two pitch.
- 1:25:27Bound it slowly towards third.
- 1:25:28A tough play for Eprick.
- 1:25:29He charges.
- 1:25:30He goes to first.
- 1:25:31A bad throw.
- 1:25:33Sano will score.
- 1:25:34Banks will go at least to second.
- 1:25:37Gavit might run the ball now.
- 1:25:40Banks pulls the second base.
- 1:25:48A scoring on a play.
- 1:25:50It'll go as an infield hit for Ernie Banks and an error for Eprick.
- 1:25:53Bobby charging the ball.

- 1:25:57The underhand throw through the ball over to Avonport's head.
- 1:26:00First base.
- 1:26:01So Sano comes on to score.
- 1:26:04Banks will not get an RBI.
- 1:26:06Gets the infield hit.
- 1:26:08Moves up to second on the throwing error.
- 1:26:10Sano scores on the error.
- 1:26:13So Landy Humbley, the catcher will be the batter.

- 1:27:06Hickman hits the ball well.
- 1:27:09Right at Henderson who moved back a couple of steps to grab it.
- 1:27:15And also Phillips will be the cut batter.
- 1:27:17Phillips it into a double play in the second.
- 1:27:19Through a walk in the fourth.

- 1:27:31He's out.
- 1:27:34Sadecki throwing to Bob Eprick.
- 1:27:35He made the tag on Banks sliding in.
- 1:27:38Hundley fails to sacrifice.
- 1:27:40Goes to the fielder's choice to play one to five.
- 1:27:45Sadecki to Eprick for the put out.
- 1:27:48A complete four to nothing.
- 1:27:50Hundley at first with one out.
- 1:27:53The battle will be the right fielder Jim Hickman.

- 1:28:36Phillips right handed batter.
- 1:28:39Hundley with the lead at first.
- 1:28:40Sadecki to the plate.

- 1:28:57One strike to count on Phillips.
- 1:29:09Sadecki to the plate.
- 1:29:10Fast ball outside.
- 1:29:11A throw to first.
- 1:29:12Back in as Hundley.
- 1:29:24Sadecki ready for the 1-1 pitch to Adolfo Phillips.
- 1:29:27Foul to the screen for strike two.
- 1:29:40The rain has almost completely stopped now.
- 1:29:47Hundley away from first.
- 1:29:48The 1-2 pitch to Phillips.
- 1:29:49A curve.
- 1:29:50High.
- 1:29:53Sadecki and Phillips go even at 2-2.
- 1:30:082-2 pitch from Sadecki.
- 1:30:29Curve inside at the knees for ball three.
- 1:30:30A 3-2 pitch.
- 1:30:31Curve ball swung on him.
- 1:30:32Best of the side is retired.
- 1:30:33Phillips strikes out.
- 1:30:34Sadecki gets strike out number two.
- 1:30:35Four to cups and a six.
- 1:30:38One run on two hits.
- 1:30:39One error.
- 1:30:40One runner left on.
- 1:30:41End of six full.
- 1:30:42Chicago four.
- 1:30:43The Giants nothing.
- 1:30:44All right, and now I'm back.
- 1:30:45I can't help what happens when I go away.
- 1:30:46The Giants have been getting their base hits off, Oldman, but they haven't been able to
- 1:31:03make them count.
- 1:31:04They're going to go forward to nothing as Bob Burda will lead off.
- 1:31:07A pair of double plays by the Cubs.
- 1:31:12Enfield has stopped a couple of potential threats.
- 1:31:16Burda takes a curve for a strike on one.
- 1:31:28Ground ball to short.
- 1:31:29Scooped up by Kessinger, thrown to first, and that's out number one.
- 1:31:36One down.
- 1:31:39Don Mason, who is two for two off the left hander, is up here.
- 1:32:01Oldman pitched it on.
- 1:32:02Ball one. Cubs four, Giants nothing.
- 1:32:09Seventh inning.
- 1:32:13Fast ball low.
- 1:32:14Ball two.
- 1:32:19Giants have seven hits.
- 1:32:20The Cubs have five, but the Cubs lead forward to nothing.
- 1:32:28Fast ball high.
- 1:32:29Ball three. Three and oh.
- 1:32:35Hundley goes out to talk to Oldman.
- 1:32:53Three oh counts to Mason. One out, no one on.
- 1:32:58Ball four. He walked him.
- 1:32:59So Mason is perfect against Oldman today as Oldman walked his first man.
- 1:33:06Men don't miss the great collection of Billy Casper's parmasters slack, but Ruth Atkins now, ten bright, bold colors in the permanent press, too.
- 1:33:14Only 1695 at Ruth Atkins. Billy Casper parmasters.
- 1:33:20Alan here up here is hit into two double plays today. Flops the button, takes a fastball strike.
- 1:33:28Each time Mason's been on ahead of him, he's bounced into the double play.
- 1:33:39One strike count to Howe.
- 1:33:41A line drive base hit to right field. Mason had to fall down to get out of the way.
- 1:33:45He goes to second and holds on at second base. Mason had to dive to get out of the way of that line drive.
- 1:33:52Then Hickman fell down at right field, but Mason had already stopped in second and so had no chance to go to third.
- 1:33:59And we'll have Jimmy Hart come up to bat for Ray Sudecky.
- 1:34:07So the Giants get hit number eight.
- 1:34:15Hart has always been sideline since entering himself in St. Louis.
- 1:34:25Hitting 250, not hit a home run.
- 1:34:30Has three doubles. Has driven in four runs.
- 1:34:40So Jim DeBatt here in the seventh with runners at first and second.
- 1:34:43There's activity in the bullpen. Ted Abernathy and Hank Aguirre.
- 1:34:46Aguirre a left hander, Abernathy a right hander for the Cubs.
- 1:34:53Mason at second, Lanier at first with one out.
- 1:35:00Fits by Holtzman. Curve is low for a ball, one and oh.
- 1:35:07Giants get two singles in the first inning, got a single in the second, a single in the third.
- 1:35:13We're retired in order in the fourth, get a single in the fifth, two singles in the sixth.
- 1:35:17We have a walk and a single here. Hart takes a fastball for a strike one and one.
- 1:35:27Ball and a strike to Jimmy. The outfield very deep and around to the left.
- 1:35:37Swing and a foul. Strike two, one and two.
- 1:35:45Holtzman gets in front of Jimmy Hart, the ball and two strikes.
- 1:35:53Bobby Bonds due up next.
- 1:36:00Left hander works to Hart. Inside for two and two. Tried to pick up that inside corner and came close with a fastball.
- 1:36:09Two balls, two strikes.
- 1:36:18Mason at second, Lanier at first. One out. Two to pitch. Curve strikes for a call.
- 1:36:33Hart stays up there to argue about it, but you know how much good it does him.
- 1:36:39He's out of there and the batter will be Bobby Bonds.
- 1:37:00Bobby Bonds up here, struck out his first two times, single his last time, takes a curve for a strike.
- 1:37:05Holtzman really baffling the dams with that curveball.
- 1:37:09The only guy that really figured that out was Don Mason. He's single on a curve.
- 1:37:20Curve is low for a ball, one and one.
- 1:37:30Mason at second, Lanier at first. Giants trailed forward and I think Bonds up here with a one and one count. Two down.
- 1:37:47Swing and a miss at the curveball. Strike two.
- 1:38:04Holtzman takes a big breath out there on the mound.
- 1:38:09One strike out of getting out of another, Giants. One strike away from getting out of another.
- 1:38:14Curveball low for a ball two. Two and two.
- 1:38:22Cubs four, Giants nothing. Runners at first and second with two out.
- 1:38:39Stretch by Holtzman. The pitch struck him out on a curveball. One and miss.
- 1:38:46No runs, one hit. No errors, two runners left. We go to the bottom of the seventh and the Cubs lead it by a score of four and nothing.
- 1:38:54And now let's see what Ruth Atkins question Paul Spiegel will be asking Dave Falk.
- 1:38:59Dave, I have a question today for Mr. W.T. of Santa Clara. You ought to know if only teenagers are wearing bell-bottom pants.
- 1:39:06Oh the extreme I would say yes Paul, but even in the middle-aged category in designer's concept they are wearing flat trousers which have a bell at the bottom and are accepting them in those age groups.
- 1:39:17In the what age group? Oh 35, 40, whatever happens at 35 and 40 today.
- 1:39:23Ladies, if your husband hasn't bought a new pair of slacks in months it probably shows, and there's no excuse for it, what with the incredible selection of slacks you can choose from at Ruth Atkins.
- 1:39:34At Ruth Atkins you can choose from every style, color, fabric and price range. Dressed slack prices start at under $20 at Ruth Atkins.
- 1:39:44Why don't you suggest that he get a couple of pairs? He can use Ruth Atkins' famous supercharge and take months to pay. Mention it over dinner.
- 1:40:07Ron Herbill will come on to do the giant pitching. Herbill makes his tenth appearance. He's 1-1 in lost time.
- 1:40:21Giving up just one run that was on a home run. And he'll pitch to Kenny Holtzman who has an eight hit shutout going through the first seven innings. The Giants have had their opportunities but they're not able to break through against him.
- 1:40:40Right hand batter takes the breaking pitch low for a ball 1-0.
- 1:40:55Ball 2 Herbill behind the pitcher, two balls no strike.
- 1:41:12Herbill's 2-0 pitch, strike call 2-1. Rich Robertson starts to throw again in the giant bullpen.
- 1:41:22We're in the bottom of the seventh, the Cubs four, the Giants nothing.
- 1:41:33Bowled at his grain by Holtzman and it's 2-2.
- 1:41:39Top of the order to follow, Kessinger and Becker after Holtzman.
- 1:41:44Cubs got two in the first, one in the second, one in the sixth.
- 1:41:51The Phillies have tied it up with Atlanta scoring twice in the bottom of the eighth. That one's tied up at three and three.
- 1:42:01Herbill lined the center field. Herbill came in with that one right up by his eyes.
- 1:42:07Bonds throws in the second and Holtzman is on. That is the curveball they say in high school.
- 1:42:15Ron really got it up there for him. So Holtzman singles the center.
- 1:42:24And the top of the batting order will be up.
- 1:42:28Starting to rain again.
- 1:42:43Berta has come in from right field to bring in his glasses or take some out with him.
- 1:42:49He might be taking some out with him to try to shield the rain from his regular glasses.
- 1:43:04Kessinger up here in a bat left-handed. The pitch is in the dirt, blocked nicely by Hyatt to keep it from going to the screen and it's 1-0.
- 1:43:15Robertson had been throwing. Now he stops and ends into the giant dugout.
- 1:43:25Kessinger butts at the pitch and misses. Tries to claim he didn't butt at it, but it's a one-on-one count.
- 1:43:33Holtzman with the leadoff single. That is hit number six for the Cubs.
- 1:43:38Etheridge flying up close to the third.
- 1:43:46Kessinger takes the breaking pitch inside for ball two, two and one.
- 1:44:07Herbill stretch. Pitch is outside for ball three.
- 1:44:14Duran is in very good position right now with a three-and-one count on Kessinger.
- 1:44:20Runner at first, no one out.
- 1:44:37Three-one count to Kessinger. Kessinger backs away.
- 1:44:46Now steps back in the batter's box.
- 1:44:51Holtzman with the lead at first, the three-one pitch. Ball four.
- 1:44:55In the dirt, blocked again by Hyatt.
- 1:44:59Kessinger walks and now Herbill is causing trouble. They're starting to get into the power and they cut line up.
- 1:45:07Beckard's not necessarily listed as a power hitter, but he'll probably be up here to try to sacrifice him along.
- 1:45:13Then with Williams, Sadow, and Banks coming on, you've got some difficulties.
- 1:45:18Holtzman at second. Kessinger at first.
- 1:45:22Rich Robertson is getting up to throw again.
- 1:45:26Right-hand batting Beckard turns the bunt, bunt it back to Herbill, who throws the first in five.
- 1:45:34Sacrifies work.
- 1:45:36Might have had a chance to get Holtzman, the pitcher, running at the third base.
- 1:45:44So, to sacrifice, Davenport covered first base.
- 1:45:51And Billy Williams will be given an intentional pass. They'll walk it.
- 1:45:58So, it'll load them up.
- 1:46:02They're not getting any bargain and Ron Sadow is due a fix, but at least Sadow's a right-hand batter.
- 1:46:23Oh, the Cubs will have a base-and-loaded situation.
- 1:46:26Williams at first base. Kessinger at second. Holtzman at third.
- 1:46:33And Ron Sadow up there.
- 1:46:48Sadow was up in a fifth-rate like this yesterday and hit him to a double play.
- 1:46:52The Giants had a very comfortable lead at the time. They're behind now.
- 1:46:56Here's the pitch to Sadow. Bounded off. Herbill's glove into center field.
- 1:47:01Two runs score. Williams goes to third.
- 1:47:15That was a bounder back through the middle.
- 1:47:17Sharp play hit. Herbill put his glove up and deflected off his glove into center field.
- 1:47:22Two runs come in.
- 1:47:26Now, a sixth-and-up in Copley. Ernie Banks is the batter with runners at first and third.
- 1:47:32Sadow at first. Williams at third.
- 1:47:34And the Cubs crowd comes alive here.
- 1:47:37Pitch in the dirt. Blocked by Hyatt. Sadow goes to second.
- 1:47:40He'll be in there. Herbill's been all over the place.
- 1:47:47A wild pitch charged to Herbill.
- 1:47:56Hyatt's shaken up on that last pitch. He's had to block about five or six up today with his body.
- 1:48:05He's probably got bruises all over his body.
- 1:48:13Ernie Banks batting now with runners at second and third. It's a one-and-oh count, Ernie.
- 1:48:20Files it away, one-and-one.
- 1:48:22Olsen's single. Kessinger walks. Beckert's sacrifice.
- 1:48:26Williams has walked intentionally.
- 1:48:28Sadow single to drive in two runs. And a wild pitch by Herbill sent Sadow over to second.
- 1:48:44One-one pitch. Fastball inside for ball two.
- 1:48:58Hyatt's had the infield in. Two-one count to Ernie Banks.
- 1:49:07Bounding ball is shortstopped. Lanier holds Williams at third. Throws to first. Banks is retired.
- 1:49:14Second out. Randy Hundley will be the batter. We'll pause for a statement out of a game.
- 1:49:18This is the Golden West Radio now.
- 1:49:20This is Dick McGraven, and you've heard my program on KSFO in the morning.
- 1:49:25No, it was in the afternoon. No, it was on a weekend.
- 1:49:28KSFO is grand, grand, grand.
- 1:49:36Randy Hundley has hit a Mesa's empty home run. It's grounded out and hit into a feeler's choice.
- 1:49:46Runners at second and third. Sadow at second. Williams at third. Two down.
- 1:49:50Two runs in. Six to nothing. The curve is low for a ball one-and-oh.
- 1:49:59St. Louis leads San Diego two to nothing after sixth inning.
- 1:50:10Bounding ball into left field. They hit two runs to old score.
- 1:50:19Hundley singles home another pair.
- 1:50:36So it's an eight to nothing, Hundley.
- 1:50:40Nate Colbert has hit a two-run over for San Diego. They've tied the Cardinals two-two.
- 1:50:45Here's Jim Hickman. Takes a strike.
- 1:50:49Then sort of a rocky inning for Ron Herbot. Four runs in.
- 1:50:53Hickman, the eighth man to bat in the innings.
- 1:51:03Swing and a drive into right center field.
- 1:51:05Burda going back. Still going back. Reaches up and makes the catch.
- 1:51:10Ron didn't fold it, but he got him out.
- 1:51:13Four runs on one, two, three. Hits.
- 1:51:18No giant errors and a runner left on.
- 1:51:22And at the end of seventh, the score, the Cubs eight at eighth and the Giants nothing.
- 1:51:35Tried this one. Comfortable beer. Sure, it's Berge.
- 1:52:03Berge's comfortable beer because it's brewed with soft water.
- 1:52:07So it refreshes and keeps on refreshing every ice cold, good tasting time you drink it.
- 1:52:13Drink some. You'll never drink a better beer than Berge.
- 1:52:22Yes, you'll be so comfortable with Berge, the comfortable beer.
- 1:52:39Atlanta has scored a run in the top of the ninth.
- 1:52:43To take a four to three lead over Philadelphia with a Fills batting in the bottom of the ninth.
- 1:52:49The Giants trail eight to nothing.
- 1:52:56We'll have Etheridge dab and board at Henderson the first three.
- 1:53:04Well, trailing eight to nothing and the Giants are going to pull this one out.
- 1:53:07We'll have to see Etheridge bat a couple of times with Denny.
- 1:53:17He's up here against the left-hander Ken Holtzman. Takes outside for a ball one and oh.
- 1:53:30One oh pitch to him. Ball two.
- 1:53:33All right away.
- 1:53:35Cubs got two in the first, one in the second, one in the sixth, four in the seventh.
- 1:53:41Two oh count to Etheridge.
- 1:53:46The Giants have been shut out on eight hits. The Cubs also have eight.
- 1:53:49Fastball strike two and one.
- 1:53:53Etheridge has one of the giant eight hits.
- 1:54:02Bowled to the screen. Strike two.
- 1:54:07Got even. Two balls, two strikes.
- 1:54:10Rich Robertson continues to throw in the Giants bullpen so he may pitch the bottom half of this inning.
- 1:54:20Line drive into left field going over to Williams. He can't get to it.
- 1:54:24He cuts it off as Etheridge will have to hold with a single.
- 1:54:27Etheridge has his second hit. And Jimmy Davenport will be the batter.
- 1:54:40Davenport has singles, been robbed of a single and called out on strike.
- 1:54:45Phillips made a good diving catch of his bid for a second hit into center field.
- 1:54:57Altman's pitch to Davenport. Line foul and he stands to the right and strikes one.
- 1:55:05Giants trail eight to nothing. Etheridge has let off with a single.
- 1:55:17Line drive foul again to the right side. Strike two.
- 1:55:32Nothing and two count to Davenport.
- 1:55:36No two pitch outside for one and two.
- 1:55:41Etheridge at first with no one out. Eight to nothing. The Cubs lead.
- 1:55:48Davenport trying to get something started here. The one-two pitch to him.
- 1:55:53Grounded back to Holtzman who grabs it, throws the second for one, the first for a double point.
- 1:55:58Davenport had a sharp shot back through the middle and Holtzman fielded it.
- 1:56:02Turned it into a double play. Soft water brewed for the taste of it.
- 1:56:06That's what makes Berge unique. Wet, frosty refreshments that keep right on refreshing.
- 1:56:11Have a Berge that comes to move in.
- 1:56:19The third double play for the Cubs. When the Giants decide to hit into double plays, they make a production out of it.
- 1:56:26Hadn't hit into any since the seven and two.
- 1:56:39Back to hit it through one and St. Louis.
- 1:56:42Anderson takes the strike.
- 1:56:47And Anderson up here with two down.
- 1:56:59A swing and a miss to the curve. One for three.
- 1:57:18Holtzman's pitch to Anderson. Foul back.
- 1:57:23Right handed today. The switch batter hitting right handed against the left hand pitcher.
- 1:57:41Struck him out on a curve ball. Anderson fooled on a breaking pitch.
- 1:57:46And Anderson's on one hit. No errors, no one left on.
- 1:57:55At the end of seven and a half the score. The Cubs eight to Giants nothing.
- 1:58:02In spring a young man's fancy lightly turns to thoughts of love.
- 1:58:06Some pretty words from a poem by Tennyson. Of course he never had to attend spring training camp like baseball players.
- 1:58:13He might have thought of spring in a whole different way. Like running after ground balls all day long under a blazing Arizona sun.
- 1:58:21Or chasing a few dozen fly balls hit over your head.
- 1:58:24And finally at the end of the day some wind sprints around the outfield until you're ready to drop.
- 1:58:29I tell you you get exhausted just watching.
- 1:58:32And along about then I start to think of having something cold, wet and refreshing.
- 1:58:37Well Sir, Burgermeister bears all that and more.
- 1:58:40And Berge is refreshing because it's soft water brewed to give it a light satisfying real beer taste.
- 1:58:45But more than that Berge's light taste keeps on refreshing you clear down to the bottom of your thirst.
- 1:58:51That's what makes Berge the comfortable beer.
- 1:58:54So spring, summer, whenever treat your taste to a cool comfortable Berge.
- 1:59:11Bottom of the eighth the Dolphins Phillips will face Ron Herbill. Cubs have an eight to nothing lead.
- 1:59:28Here's Herbill's pitch to Phillips. Strike one.
- 1:59:31Breaking pitch on the inside. Phillips started to swing. Granted check. Took the pitch in the inside corner as he was falling down.
- 1:59:400-1 count to it. 0-1 pitch. Sidearm curve eyeing away for a ball one and one.
- 1:59:57Ball on a strike to Phillips. 1-1 pitch to it. Swung on a miss. Strike two.
- 2:00:17We're at the bottom of inning number eight. Cubs eight. The Giants nothing.
- 2:00:21Swing and a miss. He's struck him out. Herbill gets his first strike out.
- 2:00:51Kenny Holtzman takes low for a ball one and oh. The Cubs pitchers walk flat out single.
- 2:01:08Herbill works one and oh to it. Ground ball to shortstop. Scooped up by Lanier.
- 2:01:24Two down. Don Kessinger. It'll be the batter.
- 2:01:45Two down. Kessinger walks. Four trip. Pitch to Don as a strike call. He's working on a 15 game hit streak.
- 2:02:02Looks like this would be his last opportunity to keep it going.
- 2:02:10Swing and a foul. Strike two.
- 2:02:21Out of oh and two. And Herbill's oh two pitch. Strike three call. Kessinger is out on strike. No runs. No hits. No errors. No one left on.
- 2:02:41The end of eight. The Cubs eight. The Giants nothing.
- 2:02:45You know we're going to be talking about Berge when we start talking about something that's comfortable because Berge is the comfortable beer.
- 2:02:52Comfortable to drink, to taste, to enjoy for as long as you like.
- 2:02:58Berge's brewed with soft water to get that special comfortable quality. And you really notice what soft water does when you taste Berge.
- 2:03:06Berge try a couple of ice cold bottles or cans today. That's the way for you to find out how comfortable beer can be.
- 2:03:13Berge the comfortable beer.
- 2:03:18A bright day so comfortable. The feel of a breeze blowing near.
- 2:03:24Fresh air so clean and cool. After the rain disappears.
- 2:03:30So many comfortable things all around every day of the year.
- 2:03:38You'll be so comfortable with Berge the comfortable beer.
- 2:03:45Ken Holtzman out to pitch any number nine for the Cubs. Chicago in front eight to nothing.
- 2:04:12Have not been able to dent the plate thus far. Jack Hyatt hitting fifth in the order will lead off.
- 2:04:18The Giants catch it and right footer Bob Burda. Second baseman Don Mason.
- 2:04:27Holtzman winds and fires. Fastball inside at the letters for ball one.
- 2:04:41Next pitch of the fastball outside for ball two.
- 2:04:45Holtzman behind that Hyatt two balls and a strike. Jack over three. Fly to center in the first. Call Adam strikes in the fourth. Fly to right in the sixth.
- 2:04:57Holtzman to the plate. This is no he's got the inside corner. Delayed call by put up our Lee Weier.
- 2:05:06Holtzman gets in on the count at two and one.
- 2:05:13Holtzman's pitch line deep the left field but right at Billy Williams.
- 2:05:19Hyatt hit a shot. He really tagged the ball but right at Billy Williams.
- 2:05:34Here's Bob Burda who's over three. Grounded to second in the second. Popped to second in the fourth. Grounded to short in the seventh. Left hander against left hander.
- 2:05:43Holtzman delivers. Slider for a strike up around the letters on the inside part of the plate.
- 2:05:52Holtzman working quickly delivers a breaking pitch high.
- 2:05:58Holtzman a pleasure to watch a real fast worker. Pool around it all. One one pitch. Curve that high for ball two.
- 2:06:13Two and one count of Bob Burda. Last ball foul to the screen. Holtzman and Burda go even at two and two.
- 2:06:33Did you pitch low for ball three. Holtzman acted as if he thought he had that pitch over.
- 2:06:50Three to pitch. Popped up in the center field. Phillips coming on. Kessinger and Becker go out. Phillips makes the catch.
- 2:07:03That's out number two and Don Mason will be the batter. If you live in Woodland the comfortable beer is brought to you by Warren Yeager.
- 2:07:10Warren hopes you'll keep on enjoying these ball games and Berge the comfortable beer.
- 2:07:25Mason singles twice in his walk. Takes low for ball one.
- 2:07:31And a single to center in the second. Single to right in the fifth. To a walk in the seventh. So perfect day thus far against the left hander.
- 2:07:40For the left handed batting Mason. Breaking pitch is good for a strike. Holtzman. Mason even at one and one.
- 2:07:50Two outs the bases empty. Top of the ninth. The Giants trail eight to nothing. Curve call strike two.
