- 0:00Speaker 1: So I'm Rob the frontman from the Weary Wizards Federation.
- 0:05Speaker 1: Been around for a couple of years now, as the
- 0:09Speaker 1: original formation did a couple of gigs opened up for
- 0:13Speaker 1: Death by Character a couple of times, and then those
- 0:17Speaker 1: guys have left the band and we've got some new
- 0:20Speaker 1: members on. We've been jamming together nice and hard for
- 0:25Speaker 1: the last couple of months, and so we've got our
- 0:28Speaker 1: return to the stage happening on the sixteenth of May
- 0:33Speaker 1: at Moe's Desert Tavern. It's a nice little Saturday afternoon
- 0:38Speaker 1: matinee show. All ages as well, so which is good
- 0:41Speaker 1: for guys like a lot of the blokes that are
- 0:44Speaker 1: in the bands that are playing there have got kids
- 0:46Speaker 1: that have you know, either just under that legal age
- 0:49Speaker 1: or really young kids that like you know, so Saturday
- 0:53Speaker 1: afternoon it's still early enough in the day that you
- 0:55Speaker 1: can take the kids along to the show. I'm gonna
- 0:57Speaker 1: worry about a babysitter or you know, heck, bring grand
- 1:02Speaker 1: and grand that along with them, you know, like making
- 1:04Speaker 1: a family outing have.
- 1:06Speaker 2: Indeed, my friend, thanks to try to stay. Robert's a
- 1:09Speaker 2: pleasure to catch up.
- 1:10Speaker 1: Yeah, mate, it's a pleasure to meet you. Been a
- 1:14Speaker 1: long time viewer of the magazine and reading you know,
- 1:18Speaker 1: the articles and quite an interesting thing that you're doing.
- 1:22Speaker 2: The reason we're here today to speak is the fact
- 1:24Speaker 2: that we're in Richard's Federation have announced a comeback show
- 1:28Speaker 2: of Sourts at Most as a clubhouse. I made the
- 1:31Speaker 2: sixteenth that your first gig in a while, and it
- 1:33Speaker 2: sort of came a bit out of the blue. Bro.
- 1:34Speaker 2: So how's rehearsals and practice guard? Are you tracking? Well?
- 1:38Speaker 1: Yeah, man, It's been a really interesting change for me
- 1:42Speaker 1: from going from the previous members that were guys that
- 1:45Speaker 1: had played in multiple bands, were very much familiar with
- 1:50Speaker 1: playing on stage and the idea of playing in a
- 1:53Speaker 1: band setting to now our new drummer aren't young Tom.
- 1:59Speaker 1: It'll be his first time playing in any kind of
- 2:02Speaker 1: band and the first time, you know, getting up in
- 2:05Speaker 1: stage in front of a live audience. So he's stoked,
- 2:08Speaker 1: he's pumped as and I, you know, it's really great
- 2:13Speaker 1: for me, who, like I've been doing this since I
- 2:15Speaker 1: was sixteen seventeen, and even like playing in concert bands
- 2:19Speaker 1: since I was like ten years old. So to see
- 2:23Speaker 1: like a guy doing his first show for the like
- 2:26Speaker 1: the first time ever and to be lucky enough to
- 2:29Speaker 1: get to do that somewhere like Moe's Desert Clubhouse. He's like, Man,
- 2:36Speaker 1: I really think we've we've struck it. We've struck it.
- 2:38Speaker 1: Pretty lucky to be honest, for a first first show
- 2:41Speaker 1: for that for young time and the new bass player, Dave,
- 2:46Speaker 1: he's fairly new to music as well. He's played in
- 2:50Speaker 1: a band around as well and played a few shows,
- 2:53Speaker 1: but not played in this particular genre and this style
- 2:57Speaker 1: of music before. So yeah, it's been a really interesting
- 3:03Speaker 1: change from guys that were seasoned professionals that learning the
- 3:07Speaker 1: songs came a bit quicker. But also the idea of
- 3:12Speaker 1: nerves was something that we never talked about, and the
- 3:15Speaker 1: idea of like, oh, how what do you do when
- 3:18Speaker 1: you go to a show? Like what what's it like
- 3:20Speaker 1: when you did just walk in? And and so that
- 3:23Speaker 1: idea of like as a band having to kind of
- 3:27Speaker 1: train and learn how to do all that stuff as
- 3:29Speaker 1: a unit again has been really interesting as well. But yeah, man,
- 3:34Speaker 1: rehearsals have been going really well, and you know, I
- 3:39Speaker 1: think we've added a few new songs to the mix
- 3:43Speaker 1: and you know, expanded out some of the old repertoire.
- 3:46Speaker 1: So they're not exactly how they were, you know last
- 3:50Speaker 1: time you last time people would have heard them over
- 3:53Speaker 1: twelve months ago. So yeah, really looking forward to rehearsal
- 3:57Speaker 1: has been going exceptionally well.
- 4:01Speaker 2: The day, which has been dug Return of the Wizards
- 4:03Speaker 2: also features Dirty Socks, Birds of Faith, and Chase the Wolves.
- 4:07Speaker 2: So tell us a bit more about each of those
- 4:09Speaker 2: bands and why you chose them to be part of
- 4:11Speaker 2: your comeback.
- 4:12Speaker 1: So Chase the Wolves their bass player, No, well, I
- 4:18Speaker 1: think he's a rhythm guitarist now, originally was their bass player.
- 4:21Speaker 1: He's a good mate of mine from Townsvill, been mates
- 4:24Speaker 1: for years and years and years. His other band played
- 4:31Speaker 1: with us at greecea a few years ago, and they
- 4:37Speaker 1: the guys from Chase the Wolves have Last year I
- 4:40Speaker 1: had my fortieth and they came out and played that
- 4:42Speaker 1: and they're just a fantastic good time band, good old
- 4:46Speaker 1: old rock and roll, you know, with a bunch of
- 4:49Speaker 1: original materials thrown in as well. Guys from Burdens of Fake.
- 4:55Speaker 1: We did a gig with the Kerwick I think it
- 4:58Speaker 1: was our second or third gig out of the gate
- 5:01Speaker 1: and we we just hit it off with those guys
- 5:05Speaker 1: really straight away, which is interesting considering the styles of
- 5:09Speaker 1: music that we both play, very different kinds of music,
- 5:12Speaker 1: Like they're much more of your anarcho punt like sex
- 5:16Speaker 1: specials clash top music, whereas that's you know, as much
- 5:22Speaker 1: as the Wizards love that kind of music. And it's
- 5:27Speaker 1: definitely those bands and bands that I love. It's very
- 5:33Speaker 1: much a departure from the kind of music that we play.
- 5:36Speaker 1: So but they're just a really good band. And I thought, well,
- 5:42Speaker 1: you know, it's I grew up in Townsville, where if
- 5:47Speaker 1: you're playing a show, it was always a mixed bill.
- 5:49Speaker 1: There was no such thing as a just a metal
- 5:51Speaker 1: night or just a punk night, or we didn't have
- 5:54Speaker 1: enough bands that you could do that, so mixed bills.
- 5:58Speaker 1: As how I came up and I love them like
- 6:01Speaker 1: I love a good mixed bill. And I thought, you know,
- 6:05Speaker 1: like as much as where the Stone Doom metal band,
- 6:09Speaker 1: we've got a rock and roll band, let's have a
- 6:11Speaker 1: punk band as well. So and then Dirty Jokes they're
- 6:16Speaker 1: they're an interesting one because, uh, their bass player, Jeff
- 6:20Speaker 1: is a good mate of mine that used to plan
- 6:21Speaker 1: a band with as well. Back in the day, was
- 6:24Speaker 1: in a band called Piston Fist with yeah, and then
- 6:30Speaker 1: that that became not Piston Fish, sorry, ah Berzka Fist. Rather,
- 6:39Speaker 1: I wish I was good enough to be in Piston Fist.
- 6:44Speaker 1: If you talk to the boys, you can tell him,
- 6:45Speaker 1: I said that, tell him, I'm sure your name. So,
- 6:50Speaker 1: but me and Jeff played in Berzuka Fish, which then
- 6:54Speaker 1: became Rumblestone, and then when Rumblestone broke up, he got
- 6:59Speaker 1: together with a bunch of guys. No Rumblestone was his
- 7:05Speaker 1: new band. Sorry, but Rumblestone a kind of been on
- 7:08Speaker 1: a hiatus that members that have jetted off overseas and
- 7:11Speaker 1: do another thing. So they've got a temporary band called
- 7:15Speaker 1: Dirty Jocks, which is playing a bit heavier, kind of
- 7:19Speaker 1: more drop D stuff than the rock and roll kind
- 7:23Speaker 1: of almost punk gear that Rumblestone used to playing. So
- 7:28Speaker 1: Dirty Jocks again like that heavier kind of sounder, you know,
- 7:33Speaker 1: mix it up and make it a bit different again.
- 7:36Speaker 1: You know, a few rage covers I think, and some
- 7:39Speaker 1: more new medal e style stuff, is what Jeff was
- 7:42Speaker 1: indicating to me. So yeah, I think, you know, we've
- 7:44Speaker 1: got a really good mix of different styles that I think,
- 7:50Speaker 1: you know, there's something there for everyone.
- 7:52Speaker 2: Yeah, as you said before, Bro, it's a lunchtime Matt,
- 7:55Speaker 2: and they sort of say so, starts a twelve, finished
- 7:58Speaker 2: at four, it's all ages, been the kids along. So
- 8:01Speaker 2: what made you lean towards Jordan early show all ages
- 8:05Speaker 2: because they're not done often enough in it these days. Yeah.
- 8:08Speaker 1: Well, so we reached out to the guys at Moe's
- 8:11Speaker 1: and as like a I reached out to a bunch
- 8:15Speaker 1: of people, and Moe's were quiet enough to get back
- 8:17Speaker 1: to us and say, look, realistically speaking, as a real
- 8:22Speaker 1: launch show for guys that weren't a huge band even
- 8:26Speaker 1: two years ago, how would you feel look about doing
- 8:30Speaker 1: this Saturday or Sunday afternoon show. And I'd been to
- 8:34Speaker 1: two of the matinee shows previously to see the guys
- 8:39Speaker 1: from Chase the Wolves and another mate's band who came
- 8:42Speaker 1: over from Kazi to play, and they were just a
- 8:45Speaker 1: really nice atmosphere and just for me anyway, Like a
- 8:51Speaker 1: lot of the guys in those bands are dudes that
- 8:53Speaker 1: are in their like forties through to their mid fifties
- 8:58Speaker 1: getting up towards their sixties. But also a lot of
- 9:02Speaker 1: us have kids that are, like you know, ranging anywhere
- 9:07Speaker 1: from five years old right up to like eighteen nineteen
- 9:10Speaker 1: year old. So the opportunity to have all of our
- 9:14Speaker 1: families attend and not have to keep everybody up and
- 9:18Speaker 1: awake until ten o'clock at nine was to me it
- 9:22Speaker 1: was like, yeah, what better idea is than that? Like
- 9:26Speaker 1: means I can go Like because a lot of us
- 9:28Speaker 1: are all traveling from Brisbane and the surrounding areas to
- 9:32Speaker 1: get there as well, it means by four o'clock in
- 9:34Speaker 1: the afternoon, well we can either go home and have
- 9:37Speaker 1: a few drinks or we can stick around for an
- 9:39Speaker 1: hour and a streat and still get home at a
- 9:41Speaker 1: reasonable hour. So yeah, Saturday afternoon, I couldn't couldn't see
- 9:46Speaker 1: a reason not to do it.
- 9:47Speaker 2: Yeah, so that it's not familiar with with Federation made,
- 9:52Speaker 2: but as straight to style of music you play it
- 9:54Speaker 2: and what do we expect from you at a live sho.
- 9:58Speaker 1: So where what you'd typically call I think stone of
- 10:00Speaker 1: doom or stone of rock, very much in the vein
- 10:03Speaker 1: of like your black Sabbaths, your coroasial conformities, down bends
- 10:12Speaker 1: bends like that, so loud, raucous, down tuned, but lots
- 10:19Speaker 1: of riffs and lots of volume. And then because we
- 10:25Speaker 1: are wizards, lots of lyrics about wizardly things like beasts
- 10:31Speaker 1: and mischief making creatures and you know, disappearing into a
- 10:36Speaker 1: quest of following different things around the place. Yeah.
- 10:41Speaker 2: Cool, ads, Now it's not just a comeback show that
- 10:44Speaker 2: you do it as well. You've also re reported your ABP,
- 10:48Speaker 2: I believe, for the plan to release that this year.
- 10:50Speaker 1: Yes, so before the original two members left, we might
- 10:55Speaker 1: have we might have planned we wanted to kind of
- 10:58Speaker 1: uh make a recording of the way that we played
- 11:02Speaker 1: the songs as a live unit, because they were very
- 11:06Speaker 1: much different to how i'd released it when I released
- 11:08Speaker 1: it as an EP. So we went into the studio
- 11:13Speaker 1: recorded those songs and they're now in the process of
- 11:19Speaker 1: well four of them in the process of being mixed
- 11:21Speaker 1: and mastered, So hopefully by August that will all be
- 11:24Speaker 1: done and dusted and there'll be a version out there
- 11:27Speaker 1: in the world. The other two songs that we did
- 11:31Speaker 1: in that recording will be being released as a single,
- 11:35Speaker 1: and then one of them has actually now become a
- 11:39Speaker 1: part of a four part which will evidently might be
- 11:46Speaker 1: the next EP in itself. So so yeah, hopefully August, well,
- 11:53Speaker 1: we'll have new music out in the world. Well old
- 11:58Speaker 1: music done refreshed.
- 12:04Speaker 2: All right, brother, thanks your time for being the pleasure chatting.
- 12:06Speaker 2: Return of the Wizards is on May sixteenth, Most at
- 12:09Speaker 2: the clubhouse controls for four pm. It's four ages they
- 12:12Speaker 2: take the kids. And where can people get a hold
- 12:14Speaker 2: of tickets? We'll find out more information.
