- 0:00Speaker 1: Season's quickly approaching. Just wanted to get your thoughts.
- 0:03Speaker 2: A lot of new faces, but returned a lot of
- 0:05Speaker 2: experience from last year's team. Just want to get some
- 0:09Speaker 2: thoughts on this year's group.
- 0:13Speaker 3: Yeah, well, we're certainly excited to get going again. We're
- 0:16Speaker 3: only five practices in. But I think we have a
- 0:22Speaker 3: nice confluence of veteran leadership and young talent on this
- 0:26Speaker 3: year's team.
- 0:29Speaker 1: We're excited, certainly, about our leadership.
- 0:31Speaker 3: I think Joey Muldowney coming back for his senior season
- 0:36Speaker 3: is something we weren't really necessarily planning on last year,
- 0:42Speaker 3: but we're excited to have him back. I think Mark
- 0:45Speaker 3: Tagg has really developed into a terrific college hockey player.
- 0:49Speaker 3: He brings a lot of leadership with our team as well.
- 0:55Speaker 3: I think we have a pretty strong defensive core. also
- 0:59Speaker 3: coming back. Anthony Elaine Samaki really took a jump last
- 1:06Speaker 3: year and he's looked excellent early on here. In goal
- 1:12Speaker 3: we have two returners Cam Hendrickson and Ryan Sanborn and
- 1:16Speaker 3: we have a talented freshman in Fiti Louis-Harvath who's a
- 1:22Speaker 3: New Jersey Devils draft pick as well. I think You know,
- 1:26Speaker 3: there's a lot in place. It's a very tough league,
- 1:29Speaker 3: as you all know, and it's tantamount that we get
- 1:32Speaker 3: out to a pretty good start because this isn't a
- 1:37Speaker 3: league you want to be swimming upstream in, that's for sure. So, again,
- 1:43Speaker 3: we're a few weeks away from when Penn State's going
- 1:45Speaker 3: to come in here, but we're really excited about the
- 1:50Speaker 3: season ahead of us.
- 1:51Speaker 1: All right, we'll take questions.
- 1:53Speaker 2: Kev.
- 1:54Speaker 1: Talk us through Muldowney's decision in the offseason. How did
- 1:58Speaker 1: it go?
- 2:01Speaker 3: I think Joey, you know, understands the importance of a
- 2:09Speaker 3: college degree.
- 2:09Speaker 1: I mean, you'd have to ask him. He's going to
- 2:12Speaker 1: be up here pretty soon.
- 2:13Speaker 3: But I think Dom, that he understands how special UConn
- 2:17Speaker 3: is for him, the importance.
- 2:19Speaker 1: Of a college degree. And also... Some of.
- 2:23Speaker 3: It came down to I'm not sure San Jose necessarily
- 2:28Speaker 3: made him an offer that.
- 2:31Speaker 1: Made him want to leave.
- 2:34Speaker 3: But, again, I think he could answer that question probably
- 2:36Speaker 3: better than I would.
- 2:37Speaker 2: Let me ask you this one.
- 2:38Speaker 1: How and when did you find out? Pretty soon. You know,
- 2:41Speaker 1: we have end-of-the-year meetings, and.
- 2:45Speaker 3: Pretty quickly he said, I want to come back for
- 2:47Speaker 3: my senior year.
- 2:49Speaker 1: And we were thrilled.
- 2:52Speaker 3: His stats went down a little last year, but how
- 2:55Speaker 3: did he develop overall as a player?
- 2:57Speaker 1: Was he more defensive-minded as well as just an offensive threat?
- 3:02Speaker 3: Yeah, I think Joey's always played a 200-foot game. When
- 3:04Speaker 3: he came here as a freshman, he was playing on
- 3:07Speaker 3: a line with Ryan Tattle. And they were more of
- 3:13Speaker 3: an energy line at that point. They metamorphosed into something
- 3:18Speaker 3: a little bit more than that. And then Joey... You know,
- 3:21Speaker 3: took off his sophomore year. He had that season where
- 3:25Speaker 3: he scored 29 goals. And you're not going to be
- 3:27Speaker 3: able to do that every single year. I mean, that's
- 3:30Speaker 3: a lot of goals to score in college hockey. And
- 3:33Speaker 3: last year I believe he had, what, 15 or 16?
- 3:35Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 3:35Speaker 1: You know, so.
- 3:38Speaker 3: He just affects the game in so many different ways.
- 3:40Speaker 3: He plays in all situations. So he's a guy that
- 3:47Speaker 3: I know a lot of our younger guys.
- 3:49Speaker 1: Will be able to look up to. Mike, staying in
- 3:50Speaker 1: college for another year, you could go and maybe get
- 3:53Speaker 1: lost in the shuffle. How much will it help.
- 3:54Speaker 3: His development, you know, staying the extra.
- 3:56Speaker 1: Year, being the man, that kind of thing? Yeah.
- 4:00Speaker 3: You know, John, throughout my career, I've seen guys leave
- 4:03Speaker 3: too early. I've never seen anybody stay too long. So
- 4:06Speaker 3: I think it always helps just the maturation process. He's
- 4:11Speaker 3: going to be thrust now into a real leadership role.
- 4:14Speaker 3: He is the captain of the team. So that's another
- 4:16Speaker 3: area where he can grow and develop. So, I think
- 4:20Speaker 3: it's only going to be a benefit for him.
- 4:21Speaker 1: Do you have any idea who's going to be on
- 4:23Speaker 1: the line when the line mates are gone?
- 4:27Speaker 2: Right.
- 4:28Speaker 1: Not yet.
- 4:30Speaker 3: You know, we have some ideas. We're still playing around
- 4:33Speaker 3: with that in practice. So if you stick around for
- 4:36Speaker 3: practice today, these lines aren't necessarily what you're going to
- 4:38Speaker 3: see against Penn State. But we're trying a lot of
- 4:42Speaker 3: different combinations right now.
- 4:43Speaker 1: How much can you tell if a five practice is
- 4:45Speaker 1: like with ten newcomers to try to mix in?
- 4:47Speaker 2: Like, you know, you don't want to get too far.
- 4:49Speaker 1: Not much, John.
- 4:51Speaker 3: You really can't tell anything until after the first month
- 4:54Speaker 3: of real games, in my opinion. Because you don't get
- 4:58Speaker 3: the same look against your own teammates as you do
- 5:01Speaker 3: against an opponent. And that's when you can, I think,
- 5:05Speaker 3: start to get a feel for, especially the younger guys,
- 5:10Speaker 3: how they're going to perform against tough competition. We open
- 5:17Speaker 3: up with Penn State, Bowling Green, Colorado College, and BU.
- 5:21Speaker 3: So we don't ease into it. This isn't, you know,
- 5:28Speaker 3: what did I see today? Well, I'm just saying you
- 5:35Speaker 3: see some of those football games early on, and it's
- 5:40Speaker 3: not Texas, Ohio State right out of the gate, a
- 5:43Speaker 3: lot of those football games.
- 5:44Speaker 2: Mike, do you? Yeah, I think because of that success,
- 5:48Speaker 2: it doesn't necessarily guarantee success going forward, but it certainly helps.
- 5:51Speaker 3: When you've had guys in the program, and we've had
- 5:54Speaker 3: 17 guys now in the program that have all.
- 5:55Speaker 1: Played in the national tournaments.
- 6:15Speaker 3: So now they have an expectation of getting back there.
- 6:19Speaker 3: And I think that certainly helps. As opposed to when
- 6:24Speaker 3: you haven't been there and you think that's the utopian
- 6:28Speaker 3: goal is we can get to that national tournament. But
- 6:31Speaker 3: until you actually do it, it's a lot tougher. Now
- 6:38Speaker 3: there's a real belief that not only can we get there, but.
- 6:43Speaker 1: We deserve to be there. And that's where we want
- 6:45Speaker 1: to be.
- 6:46Speaker 2: To piggyback off that, you're a little away from a
- 6:50Speaker 2: hockey's title. How do you continue to build off of
- 6:54Speaker 2: the last two seasons?
- 6:57Speaker 1: I think you just have to keep knocking on the door.
- 7:03Speaker 3: Hockey is such an unpredictable game, and a lot of
- 7:10Speaker 3: times the team that plays best sometimes doesn't win.
- 7:14Speaker 1: But you have to keep getting there and keep knocking
- 7:16Speaker 1: on the door.
- 7:18Speaker 3: I remember when I was at Boston College, we went
- 7:21Speaker 3: to three throws and fours, and it wasn't until the
- 7:23Speaker 3: fourth one before we won.
- 7:26Speaker 1: It's hard. It's hard.
- 7:28Speaker 3: You run into hot goalies. You run into hitting pipes.
- 7:31Speaker 3: There's a lot of factors that go into a hockey
- 7:33Speaker 3: game where a lot of times in a football game,
- 7:37Speaker 3: if you have 500 yards total offense and your opponent
- 7:40Speaker 3: has 100, you're going to win the majority of those games.
- 7:43Speaker 3: That's not necessarily the case in hockey. You can out-shoot
- 7:46Speaker 3: a team 50-20 and still lose a hockey game. So
- 7:50Speaker 3: it's just getting back there and continuing to play at
- 7:53Speaker 3: a high level.
- 7:53Speaker 1: Mike, where does this class stack up in classes you
- 7:56Speaker 1: brought in?
- 7:57Speaker 3: You have 10 of them, one transfer, nine freshmen, and
- 7:59Speaker 3: five NHL draft picks.
- 8:01Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 8:02Speaker 1: I mean, they all make it to the finish line.
- 8:04Speaker 1: On paper, it's pretty good. We'll see once we start
- 8:07Speaker 1: playing games.
- 8:08Speaker 3: But I'm certainly encouraged by the kids we have coming in,
- 8:11Speaker 3: I think, Uh, there's a lot of talent there.
- 8:15Speaker 1: However, we lost a lot. And, you know, when you lose.
- 8:18Speaker 3: Ryan Tattle and Jake Percival and Tabor Heaslip and Tristan Frazier,
- 8:23Speaker 3: who played a lot of games for us, you know, uh,
- 8:26Speaker 3: and then Tom Massinio on the back end and Tyler Musilak, who, uh,
- 8:31Speaker 3: was an experienced goaltender, was playing in Florida's organization right now.
- 8:35Speaker 3: We lost a lot of games played in that situation. So, uh,
- 8:42Speaker 3: That is something that's hard to replace. However, the good
- 8:49Speaker 3: programs we still bring back, but this gives a chance
- 8:53Speaker 3: for Ethan Gardula to make a step. Ethan Whitcomb can
- 8:57Speaker 3: play in some more situations now. Mike Mertag maybe gets
- 9:02Speaker 3: some power play time. There's a lot of different roles
- 9:07Speaker 3: that guys have played in the past now are going
- 9:09Speaker 3: to be elevated.
- 9:11Speaker 1: And moved into different roles.
- 9:12Speaker 3: And when you're developing players and doing a good job
- 9:16Speaker 3: with your team, those guys are ready for those roles.
- 9:19Speaker 2: Are there any of those new young guys that are
- 9:21Speaker 2: coming in that have no games but have caught your
- 9:24Speaker 2: eye or turned heads so far? Sure.
- 9:26Speaker 1: It happens every day in practice.
- 9:29Speaker 3: But as I said, until we really play against an
- 9:33Speaker 3: opponent wearing a different colored jersey, I think that's when
- 9:36Speaker 3: you really see how these guys are going to acclimate
- 9:39Speaker 3: themselves to college hockey.
- 9:40Speaker 2: How has recruiting and team building kind of changed in
- 9:44Speaker 2: these past couple of years with the CHL ruling?
- 9:46Speaker 1: Maybe what's the biggest change from.
- 9:48Speaker 3: Year one to year two? That's an interesting question. We're
- 9:54Speaker 3: still navigating some of it. I think as far as recruiting,
- 10:00Speaker 3: we used to get to prep school games all the time,
- 10:04Speaker 3: and I think the reality of it is now most
- 10:07Speaker 3: of those kids are going to have to go play
- 10:08Speaker 3: junior hockey before they come here. So we're spending a
- 10:12Speaker 3: lot more time watching junior hockey games than we are
- 10:14Speaker 3: prep school games from that standpoint.
- 10:18Speaker 1: It is certainly....
- 10:22Speaker 3: The recruiting base that we're dealing with or the talent
- 10:26Speaker 3: level has increased. I think it's creating a lot more
- 10:28Speaker 3: parity within college hockey. Players that in the past may
- 10:34Speaker 3: have been going to the so-called blue bloods are falling
- 10:37Speaker 3: off and going to other schools, which, like I said,
- 10:41Speaker 3: is creating that type of parity. And I think it's
- 10:44Speaker 3: really important. Some people are still fighting the transfer portal,
- 10:49Speaker 3: but in some ways it makes you pay a lot
- 10:52Speaker 3: more attention to your team and to your players and
- 10:54Speaker 3: making sure that they get the development here when there's
- 10:58Speaker 3: always that threat of them going to a different school.
- 11:02Speaker 2: How do you think that strategy of these guys going
- 11:06Speaker 2: to juniors and maturing a little bit, just talking about
- 11:08Speaker 2: college hockey as a whole, do you think it's elevated
- 11:12Speaker 2: the product of college hockey, just a little bit more.
- 11:14Speaker 1: Mature guys coming to this program? No question. I just
- 11:17Speaker 1: think you're seeing....
- 11:20Speaker 3: Eventually, I think what you're going to see is the
- 11:22Speaker 3: development model is going to be you have the NHL,
- 11:26Speaker 3: probably the American Hockey League, college, and then junior hockey.
- 11:30Speaker 3: And hopefully we can get all the junior hockey leagues
- 11:32Speaker 3: on the same page at some point because there's still
- 11:40Speaker 3: a little bit of junior hockey still thinks they're as
- 11:43Speaker 3: equal as college. And one's an under-20 league, and we're
- 11:48Speaker 3: basically under-24 now You know, with the age now of 19,
- 11:53Speaker 3: you know, pretty much you're not going to see 25-,
- 11:56Speaker 3: 26-year-old college hockey players anymore. I think most of them
- 11:59Speaker 3: are going to age out at 24. But still, it's
- 12:02Speaker 3: a much older league than junior hockey.
- 12:05Speaker 1: Mike, you added Sean Wallstreet's stuff.
- 12:08Speaker 2: Yeah. What's he been like as a coach so far,
- 12:11Speaker 2: and do you see any of his dad in him? Yeah.
- 12:17Speaker 1: Well, it's hard to believe.
- 12:18Speaker 3: Like, yeah, I coached against his dad for years, and
- 12:20Speaker 3: I was telling him a story about his dad the
- 12:22Speaker 3: other day. But, you know, Sean was only two when
- 12:24Speaker 3: his dad unfortunately passed. And it's hard to believe it's
- 12:28Speaker 3: been 25 years since he passed. But we had some
- 12:33Speaker 3: major battles against him, and he was an unbelievable coach,
- 12:36Speaker 3: a great motivator. I think Sean's passion for the game,
- 12:41Speaker 3: he got from his dad. There's no question about that.
- 12:44Speaker 3: It's been fun to be around him. He's got a
- 12:46Speaker 3: lot of energy. My staff is getting older, you know.
- 12:52Speaker 3: And we just hired Ryan Shannon as well as a
- 12:54Speaker 3: director of player development who I coached at BC. And,
- 12:59Speaker 3: you know, he won a Stanley Cup as an undrafted
- 13:03Speaker 3: player coming out of BC, made Anaheim and won a
- 13:06Speaker 3: Stanley Cup. And, you know, one of the things that
- 13:09Speaker 3: we really take a lot of pride in here at
- 13:13Speaker 3: UConn is We've had a lot of guys who have
- 13:15Speaker 3: been late-round draft picks or undrafted, whether it be Mark
- 13:18Speaker 3: Gatcombe or Viking last year. Chase Bradley's a late-draft pick.
- 13:25Speaker 3: Ryan Torberg was a seventh-round draft pick. And these guys
- 13:28Speaker 3: are all getting games in the NHL. So I think
- 13:31Speaker 3: we're doing a pretty good job of developing those players
- 13:35Speaker 3: who aren't, you know, your first-round draft pick can't miss prospects.
- 13:40Speaker 3: We're doing a pretty good job. And one of the
- 13:42Speaker 3: reasons why... You know, I hired Ryan besides what a
- 13:46Speaker 3: tenacious competitor he was because he came from that same
- 13:52Speaker 3: development where not drafted, wasn't highly recruited, and had a
- 13:58Speaker 3: great four-year career at BC and then turned it into
- 14:01Speaker 3: a professional career afterwards.
- 14:05Speaker 2: Anything else for Coach Cass?
- 14:08Speaker 1: Is it meaningful at all to have Hartford selected as
- 14:11Speaker 1: a regional site.
- 14:11Speaker 2: For the tournament?
- 14:14Speaker 1: Well, I'm not sure it was selected.
- 14:15Speaker 3: I think it's, you know, the president that passes away,
- 14:19Speaker 3: the vice president gets the job, right? I think Bridgeport
- 14:23Speaker 3: decided not to have it. We got, you know, Hartford
- 14:27Speaker 3: got it. And we're excited for that. I think it's
- 14:29Speaker 3: fantastic for Connecticut to be hosting it. I think Hartford's
- 14:33Speaker 3: a great venue. PBA, the amount of money that they've
- 14:36Speaker 3: put into that facility, it's fantastic. Awesome for us to
- 14:41Speaker 3: have that, and we're going to have the NCAA regional there,
- 14:43Speaker 3: and I believe, you guys can correct me if I'm wrong,
- 14:45Speaker 3: I think that's the first time an NCAA regional will
- 14:48Speaker 3: ever be hosted in Hartford, so hopefully we're playing in it.
- 14:53Speaker 2: I don't know if you've gotten a chance to see
- 14:56Speaker 2: any of that proposed legislation yesterday that was cycling through
- 14:59Speaker 2: social media about looking to limit international athletes on rosters
- 15:05Speaker 2: to 20%.
- 15:05Speaker 1: Obviously that has.
- 15:07Speaker 2: a lot of impact on college hockey. I just wanted
- 15:10Speaker 2: to hear.
- 15:10Speaker 1: Yeah, I just heard about it today.
- 15:12Speaker 3: I'm not sure why, what the impetus is behind limiting
- 15:16Speaker 3: it for, I mean, are we going to do that
- 15:19Speaker 3: in major league baseball? Say only 20% can be foreign.
- 15:26Speaker 3: I think that would put a lot of baseball players
- 15:27Speaker 3: out of business. I think the national hockey league, are
- 15:30Speaker 3: they going to limit it to 20%? I don't know
- 15:32Speaker 3: why college would, I don't know what the, rationale is
- 15:38Speaker 3: behind that i just heard about it today does anybody
- 15:40Speaker 3: else know why i'm not sure why they would do
- 15:43Speaker 3: that um i'm not sure it makes sense i don't
- 15:48Speaker 3: think you would do it at the professional level so
- 15:50Speaker 3: i don't know why you would do it in college.
- 15:54Speaker 1: Yeah i mean we're worried about i.
- 15:56Speaker 3: Don't know anything else canadians coming to the u.s can
- 16:03Speaker 3: you identify a strength of this team yet or is
- 16:05Speaker 3: it Too early because you have roster turnovers.
- 16:11Speaker 1: Yeah, that would be a hard one for me right now.
- 16:15Speaker 3: Like I said, until I see this team in meaningful games,
- 16:19Speaker 3: I think that we skate well. And I think that
- 16:24Speaker 3: we have a lot of competitors. So I think that
- 16:27Speaker 3: bodes well for us. But again, you have to put
- 16:30Speaker 3: it all together. You have to play connected. You've got
- 16:33Speaker 3: to be on the same page. The team still has
- 16:36Speaker 3: to come together. Right now I've got a roster full
- 16:40Speaker 3: of names. I don't have a team yet. It takes
- 16:43Speaker 3: time to build. And every year that's our goal as
- 16:46Speaker 3: coaches is to take it from a roster and build
- 16:49Speaker 3: it into a team. And that takes time. A little
- 16:53Speaker 3: more than five practices.
- 16:54Speaker 1: What would an early schedule do, Mike? You could lose
- 16:57Speaker 1: a team potentially, right? Or no, we'll just toughen them up.
- 17:01Speaker 1: Even if you take, you know, it might be tough
- 17:03Speaker 1: out of the gate. Yeah, I don't know.
- 17:05Speaker 3: You know, it's such a long season. You know, I
- 17:09Speaker 3: heard Nick Saban talking about it on college game day.
- 17:11Speaker 3: He gets infuriated when, you know, people are saying Michigan's
- 17:15Speaker 3: going to be lousy.
- 17:16Speaker 1: They're not going to win. And all of a sudden they.
- 17:18Speaker 3: Come out and beat Oklahoma, you know, because they didn't
- 17:20Speaker 3: play well against Western Michigan. One game doesn't, you know,
- 17:23Speaker 3: it's going to take a lot more than our first
- 17:26Speaker 3: three weekends for me to understand, you know, where this
- 17:29Speaker 3: team is going. You know, you look a couple of
- 17:32Speaker 3: years ago, like we went, We went on a run
- 17:35Speaker 3: in the second half that propelled.
- 17:37Speaker 1: Us to the national tournament.
- 17:40Speaker 3: It's a long season, and I've seen it the other
- 17:42Speaker 3: way too. You come out of the gates and play really,
- 17:45Speaker 3: really well, and all of a sudden you fall apart
- 17:47Speaker 3: in the second half of the season. That can happen too.
- 17:53Speaker 3: The important thing, John, is just that you have great
- 17:56Speaker 3: leadership and you just stay consistent with your process and
- 18:00Speaker 3: the identity of your team. How you want to play
- 18:03Speaker 3: the game, is to me the most important thing, especially
- 18:07Speaker 3: early on, more so than the results. So you're doing
- 18:11Speaker 3: this with a lost column early on? Well, no, you don't.
- 18:15Speaker 3: I mean, every time that you tee it up, you
- 18:17Speaker 3: expect to win. That being said, we really have to
- 18:22Speaker 3: focus early on on how do we want to play
- 18:25Speaker 3: the game. We want to play with pace. We want
- 18:28Speaker 3: to play with fresh legs. We want to play with
- 18:30Speaker 3: a clear mind. Are we able to do that? Or
- 18:34Speaker 3: we don't want to be a team that beats ourselves.
- 18:37Speaker 3: So if we're turning the puck over 15 times in
- 18:41Speaker 3: the neutral zone, we're not going to win a lot
- 18:43Speaker 3: of hockey games. So those are the things that we
- 18:45Speaker 3: really have to focus on early on.
- 18:47Speaker 1: One more, guys?
- 18:49Speaker 2: You look at the recruiting class that you brought in
- 18:51Speaker 2: for this season, a good handful of those guys.
- 18:53Speaker 1: Wore letters to junior hockey.
- 18:55Speaker 2: Sure. Is it recruiting-wise to bring in guys with that
- 18:58Speaker 2: level of leadership experience? Yeah.
- 19:00Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 19:01Speaker 3: I think that's important, and I tell my current team
- 19:04Speaker 3: every year, my job is to bring players in that
- 19:06Speaker 3: are better than you. Your job is to make sure
- 19:08Speaker 3: they're not. So I'm expecting to bring players in that
- 19:12Speaker 3: are going to push them and challenge them for their spots.
- 19:15Speaker 3: Those are the kids I want to bring in here.
- 19:17Speaker 3: I think any program worth of salt is going to
- 19:19Speaker 3: do that. So, you know, we're excited about the kids
- 19:23Speaker 3: we brought in, but I'm also excited about the kids
- 19:26Speaker 3: we have here.
- 19:27Speaker 1: So it's just bringing them all together. And, as I said,
- 19:32Speaker 1: building a team. Awesome. Thanks, Coach. Okay, thanks, guys. Appreciate it.
- 19:36Speaker 1: We'll have Joey and Mike out shortly, guys. All right.
