- 0:03Speaker 1: How do you respond?
- 0:07Speaker 2: Well, you can't.
- 0:07Speaker 1: Fifty years that song's been around.
- 0:09Speaker 2: I can't believe it. To celebrate fifty years of the
- 0:12Speaker 2: iconic Ossie anthem, the Angels are bringing there. Am I
- 0:15Speaker 2: ever going to see your face again? Fifty years? On
- 0:18Speaker 2: tour to Frio Social this Friday and the Rosemount Hotel
- 0:21Speaker 2: on Saturday. Tickets. I think you can still get some
- 0:25Speaker 2: for the Friday show via the Angels dot com dot you.
- 0:28Speaker 2: Otherwise it's a waiting list for Saturday night, because that's
- 0:32Speaker 2: how huge this monumental anniversary is as it should be.
- 0:37Speaker 2: John Brewster, guitarist for The Angels, is with us.
- 0:39Speaker 3: Hello John, John, let us go Russell. How you going, John?
- 0:44Speaker 2: Not too many you know bands get to have a
- 0:46Speaker 2: fiftieth anniversary for a song. That's how important this song
- 0:53Speaker 2: is to us.
- 0:54Speaker 3: You can't believe it. I can't believe it, or that
- 0:57Speaker 3: we released that song produced by the legendary Vander and
- 1:02Speaker 3: Young in nineteen seventy six, and here we are twenty
- 1:06Speaker 3: twenty six and the song's become huge over the years,
- 1:09Speaker 3: and I wonder why.
- 1:10Speaker 2: Well, we all know why.
- 1:12Speaker 1: The audience tells me that.
- 1:14Speaker 2: But we love a good story behind a song, John,
- 1:16Speaker 2: what's the story behind Am I ever going to see
- 1:20Speaker 2: your face again?
- 1:21Speaker 3: Well, the story behind the song itself is actually quite
- 1:25Speaker 3: a sad lyric because it's written about a fatal car
- 1:30Speaker 3: accident somebody that Dot knew, and so it's really quite
- 1:35Speaker 3: a sad song. But I think it's I just think
- 1:37Speaker 3: it's wonderful that the song. I mean, it's an upbeat song.
- 1:41Speaker 3: You know ri Rix's guitar solo, which you know, the
- 1:46Speaker 3: outro of you were just playing then you know that's
- 1:49Speaker 3: the ambulance.
- 1:50Speaker 2: Oh my god, there you go.
- 1:52Speaker 1: Oh wow, You'll never hear it the same again.
- 1:56Speaker 3: Yeah, because it makes it sound like a European ambulance.
- 2:01Speaker 3: It's an international ambulance. Okay, okay.
- 2:04Speaker 2: The song's taken on certainly has taken on a life
- 2:07Speaker 2: of its own. Note one of the greatest pub tracks
- 2:09Speaker 2: of all time.
- 2:10Speaker 1: When did you know John, that it wasn't just it
- 2:13Speaker 1: wasn't just a hit, but it had become like iconic.
- 2:16Speaker 3: Well, it was, in fact, wasn't a hit when we
- 2:19Speaker 3: released it, and so you know, when we had released
- 2:22Speaker 3: a face to face album and then subsequently no Exit
- 2:27Speaker 3: and then Dark trilogy of albums just took the band
- 2:30Speaker 3: through the roof. It took the band through the US
- 2:34Speaker 3: and Europe, etc. So we started touring internationally based on
- 2:40Speaker 3: those three albums. Basically we kind of left it behind
- 2:43Speaker 3: because not that we didn't like it, but it wasn't successful,
- 2:47Speaker 3: and we thought, oh, we've moved on from that a bit.
- 2:50Speaker 3: And we were playing out Ezer and nineteen eighty three
- 2:54Speaker 3: and through the three thousand people in the town hall,
- 2:58Speaker 3: and they wouldn't let us go. They kept hiring for
- 3:01Speaker 3: encorese and so somebody said, oh, let's play Face again.
- 3:05Speaker 3: We hadn't played it for a couple for two or
- 3:07Speaker 3: three years, and so we did the song, and the
- 3:12Speaker 3: three thousand people chanted that famous chant where.
- 3:16Speaker 2: You asked a question and they responded.
- 3:22Speaker 1: A mining town and enjoying a bit of a drink.
- 3:24Speaker 1: They would have been primed for.
- 3:25Speaker 2: It happened in Mountainer Okay.
- 3:28Speaker 3: Of course things that they started, but I don't think
- 3:32Speaker 3: that's true. I mean just that that's the first time
- 3:35Speaker 3: we heard it, and so we put the song in
- 3:38Speaker 3: the show from there on, and now, of course we can't.
- 3:41Speaker 1: And the rest is history.
- 3:43Speaker 2: The rest is now fifty years on tour. You know,
- 3:46Speaker 2: many artists have had to go at covering it. June Rats, Metallica,
- 3:51Speaker 2: Keith Urban and just recently Jelly Roll on his Australian tour.
- 3:55Speaker 2: Do you have a favorite cover of the song?
- 3:58Speaker 3: Well, June, that's by a Mile I think, I think,
- 4:03Speaker 3: And then in fact Rick and I played played that
- 4:07Speaker 3: with them. It was a trifle day like a version.
- 4:11Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 4:12Speaker 3: There's also a Baby Shakes and they're called in New
- 4:15Speaker 3: York City they were called to it's an all girl band. Okay,
- 4:19Speaker 3: they did a pretty good job of.
- 4:20Speaker 2: It, all right, you know, I reckon we'll do a
- 4:22Speaker 2: good job of it. Miley Cyrus because that girl and
- 4:25Speaker 2: sing rock song. I'd love to hear Miley sing it.
- 4:30Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, you know we're playing great. We're absolutely rocking
- 4:38Speaker 3: out there. So Perth Course is one of the favorite
- 4:42Speaker 3: places for us to go. It's always been fantastic for
- 4:46Speaker 3: us and continues.
- 4:47Speaker 1: To be all through the you know, the late seventies
- 4:51Speaker 1: and into the eighties when the pub rock scene was
- 4:53Speaker 1: so strong. You guys know, what a what a place
- 4:55Speaker 1: to come and play.
- 4:57Speaker 2: Before we let you go, I must say the memorative video,
- 5:02Speaker 2: it's fantastic. It actually brought a tear to my eye. John,
- 5:05Speaker 2: It's just fantastic. It's been released on YouTube.
- 5:07Speaker 1: Yeah, you've got a YouTube channel.
- 5:09Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 5:10Speaker 3: Yeah, Look, thanks for bringing that up because my brother
- 5:14Speaker 3: did that, Rick, he put that video together. I think
- 5:17Speaker 3: that's absolutely brilliant. Shows the history of the band just that.
- 5:23Speaker 3: So yeah, I think it's a great tribute.
- 5:27Speaker 2: It's a great tribute to the evolution of the band,
- 5:29Speaker 2: and I think it's going to be included in the
- 5:30Speaker 2: shows on the weekend of around.
- 5:32Speaker 3: Yeah. He's not about guitar or style then, by the way, Brothers. Yeah,
- 5:40Speaker 3: it's all about the rhythm, isn't it.
- 5:42Speaker 1: Yes, not not the showy stuff, but you know the
- 5:47Speaker 1: the you know the stuff that keeps.
- 5:53Speaker 2: Really looking forward to celebrating this with you on the weekend.
- 5:56Speaker 2: It is going to be epic Friday night at Frio Social,
- 6:00Speaker 2: Saturday night at the Rosemount. We'll see you there.
- 6:01Speaker 3: Well, we're excited because we love playing Purse, so we
- 6:04Speaker 3: love having you here.
- 6:05Speaker 1: Good to have you back and happy happy fiftieth.
