- 0:00Speaker 1: Welcome back to Bear Smokeouse Barbecue. It is the Yukon
- 0:03Speaker 1: Men's he Ice Hockey Coaches Show. I'm your host, Bob
- 0:05Speaker 1: Joyce with head coach Mike Cavan. Adam's got hoops tonight,
- 0:08Speaker 1: so it's just me and Cavin. I think I'm solo Friday.
- 0:11Speaker 1: This is the first of our coaches shows for the
- 0:13Speaker 1: second half. Our next one will be the twentieth, which
- 0:16Speaker 1: is a Tuesday here at Bears because we've got women's
- 0:19Speaker 1: basketball and Notre Dame on the nineteenth. Next hockey broadcast
- 0:23Speaker 1: is Friday. We've got Yukon and the UMAs Lowell.
- 0:26Speaker 2: Is that game at in our name or that Oh
- 0:28Speaker 2: that's stores stores yep, so we've got that. But it's
- 0:31Speaker 2: a five o'clock start, so it can't be two places
- 0:34Speaker 2: at once. Your hockey team continues to play well. What
- 0:39Speaker 2: impressed you most about the guys coming off the break
- 0:42Speaker 2: when they come back to campus. When did they get
- 0:44Speaker 2: back by the way for the first game.
- 0:45Speaker 3: On the on the thirty.
- 0:46Speaker 4: First We practiced on the twenty seventh was our first practice,
- 0:50Speaker 4: so most of them came back on the twenty sixth.
- 0:54Speaker 4: There was a storm though that night. I don't know
- 0:56Speaker 4: if you remember, so we Ryan Town and Owen Simpson
- 1:01Speaker 4: didn't make it back on time, so they missed practice
- 1:04Speaker 4: on the twenty seventh, but we're able to get them
- 1:06Speaker 4: in here late in the afternoon on the twenty seventh,
- 1:08Speaker 4: and they got three practices.
- 1:10Speaker 3: In okay, and then you come away with a good
- 1:12Speaker 3: effort here.
- 1:13Speaker 1: What was the biggest message to your guys when they
- 1:16Speaker 1: went for the break, when they went away, when they
- 1:18Speaker 1: got ready for exams, and then they go away for Christmas.
- 1:21Speaker 4: Yeah, I think it was to just you know, go home,
- 1:23Speaker 4: enjoy the time with your family and your friends, and recharge,
- 1:30Speaker 4: reset and come back ready to tackle, you know, the
- 1:34Speaker 4: second half. Because you know, I tell the players all
- 1:36Speaker 4: the time, the Men's League boot begins in January. It's
- 1:41Speaker 4: a completely different you know, the games just are a
- 1:45Speaker 4: lot more intense, They mean a lot more. And when
- 1:48Speaker 4: teams are playing for a playoff spot or position, you know,
- 1:53Speaker 4: home ice, not having a go on the road, the
- 1:56Speaker 4: games just are more intense and they mean more. And
- 2:00Speaker 4: you know, right now we're in also in the mix
- 2:02Speaker 4: of you know, trying to stay involved with the national
- 2:06Speaker 4: tournament as well. You know, that's just all numbers. So
- 2:10Speaker 4: you have to win your games, and your NPI numbers
- 2:14Speaker 4: got to be you know, if you want to guarantee
- 2:16Speaker 4: that you're going to be in that national tournament, you've
- 2:18Speaker 4: got to be in the top twelve.
- 2:20Speaker 1: Yeah, what does that look like right now? How does
- 2:22Speaker 1: this new system work? And how do you guys stand?
- 2:24Speaker 1: Because I remember last year during the holidays, I was
- 2:27Speaker 1: in North Carolina. I decided to say, let's see where
- 2:29Speaker 1: they are in the pair wise, and then it's like,
- 2:31Speaker 1: all right, this is doable with what was coming up,
- 2:34Speaker 1: and you took off. Are you in that same good
- 2:36Speaker 1: spot now where you take care of your business?
- 2:38Speaker 3: You'd be all right?
- 2:39Speaker 1: You know.
- 2:39Speaker 4: I think we're fifteen right now. However, you know, if
- 2:46Speaker 4: we had won the Stonehill game, we'd be eleven. You know,
- 2:49Speaker 4: So it's still very volatile right now. It's we're in
- 2:55Speaker 4: a good spot. We just have to continue to play
- 2:58Speaker 4: well and win our games.
- 2:59Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 3:00Speaker 1: True, You've got you Massolow coming up this weekend. Health Wise,
- 3:04Speaker 1: you lost to Houston Cartman to a torn acl You
- 3:07Speaker 1: bring in a young man named Carter Sproll comes out
- 3:09Speaker 1: of Grand Forks, North Dakota, played some time in the
- 3:12Speaker 1: North American Hockey League six three, two oh seven.
- 3:15Speaker 3: What can it tell us about this young man?
- 3:18Speaker 4: Yeah, he was certainly a late ad, but he was
- 3:22Speaker 4: playing in the North American League. He was playing for Watertown.
- 3:25Speaker 4: He's a big, strong kid. He's a diligent player, really smart,
- 3:30Speaker 4: plays two hundred feet and you know, I've only seen
- 3:34Speaker 4: him now for about a week, but I have he's
- 3:37Speaker 4: been impressing me each day that he's on the ice.
- 3:41Speaker 4: I was telling our staff today that he really plugged
- 3:45Speaker 4: in when it comes to drills. And for a kid
- 3:47Speaker 4: that is so new to our program and doesn't really
- 3:52Speaker 4: know our systems or how we're going to play, he's
- 3:55Speaker 4: adapted very quickly.
- 3:57Speaker 3: How old is he is? He is twenty years old.
- 4:00Speaker 1: Okay, so he's your typical incoming freshman from junior hockey.
- 4:04Speaker 1: Then all right, no, that's good. Health wise. How you
- 4:07Speaker 1: doing health wise team wise?
- 4:09Speaker 4: Right now? Okay, yeah, knock on wood, we're okay right now.
- 4:13Speaker 4: So the break, with the exception of Houston, who's out
- 4:16Speaker 4: for the season, right now, I think we're in pretty
- 4:19Speaker 4: good shape.
- 4:20Speaker 3: So Trey at the time, did Trey Scott some good?
- 4:22Speaker 4: Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, it did everybody good. I think
- 4:24Speaker 4: it did, you know, even Joey got a couple of
- 4:26Speaker 4: weeks rest before you had to go play over in
- 4:28Speaker 4: the Spangler Cup.
- 4:29Speaker 3: Yeah, they had a real, real good success.
- 4:31Speaker 1: They played some pro teams across the pond, and I
- 4:34Speaker 1: guess what their best finished ever, they finished playing the championship.
- 4:37Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 4:37Speaker 4: Well, it's the first time they've ever played the college
- 4:40Speaker 4: select team. So okay, it's the tournament's been going on
- 4:44Speaker 4: for a long time. However, this is the first time
- 4:47Speaker 4: we sent a team of college players and they lost
- 4:50Speaker 4: in the final. They had a great showing.
- 4:53Speaker 1: Yeah, and I'm sure and I think Joey had an
- 4:55Speaker 1: assist in the first game that they played.
- 4:59Speaker 3: What are some of the with some of the feedback
- 5:01Speaker 3: that he gave you on the experience. It was a
- 5:03Speaker 3: great experience.
- 5:04Speaker 4: You know, the crowds were excellent, you know, uh, you know,
- 5:07Speaker 4: Switzerland's a beautiful country, Davos is a spectacular area. The
- 5:12Speaker 4: rink was He loved the rank, the crowds. You know,
- 5:16Speaker 4: it's a very well run and in respected tournament, and
- 5:19Speaker 4: I think it was It would be a it's a
- 5:22Speaker 4: lifetime experience for him mm hm.
- 5:24Speaker 3: And you might see some payoff later on, right.
- 5:26Speaker 4: I hope.
- 5:26Speaker 2: So, yeah, for sure.
- 5:28Speaker 1: Uh, we met, you mentioned Cayden, and we did talk
- 5:31Speaker 1: about Cayden. He probably has taken I'm sure a few
- 5:36Speaker 1: other guys have taken significant jumps from freshman to sophomore year.
- 5:39Speaker 3: You've talked about this, Joey did it last year. Where
- 5:42Speaker 3: have you seen Caden's game get better?
- 5:44Speaker 4: I just think he feels a lot more comfortable playing
- 5:48Speaker 4: within our system. He Uh, He's always had great speed,
- 5:51Speaker 4: he's got great compete, he shoots the puck extremely well.
- 5:56Speaker 4: And now he's playing I say all the time, the
- 6:00Speaker 4: really good players can play without thinking. You know, they
- 6:03Speaker 4: think without thinking, if that makes sense. He's not don't think,
- 6:06Speaker 4: just playing, just he's just playing. And his two line mates,
- 6:11Speaker 4: he's had a lot of chemistry with Des and Blazer,
- 6:15Speaker 4: and like I said, they were by far I thought
- 6:18Speaker 4: our best line uh Saturday down to Long Island.
- 6:21Speaker 1: Yeah, and they have played really well all year. I
- 6:23Speaker 1: mean they have a nice chemistry, those three. I mean,
- 6:26Speaker 1: Kan had a good, good chemistry with the Ethans last year.
- 6:30Speaker 1: Right now he's taken these two under their wing and
- 6:32Speaker 1: just taking it to a different level.
- 6:33Speaker 4: Yeah. And you know the Ethans now playing with Mike
- 6:36Speaker 4: Murtag who's taken his game to another level as well. Yeah,
- 6:40Speaker 4: so he's been playing lights out hockey for us, and
- 6:43Speaker 4: we've moved him to center, and he's done a nice
- 6:46Speaker 4: job on the dot for us as well.
- 6:48Speaker 1: What about the veterans, Tats obviously still putting up good numbers.
- 6:52Speaker 1: I mean Tristan, I mean the goal he's scored against Merrimac.
- 6:56Speaker 1: I think this is the one that made it four
- 6:57Speaker 1: or five two. Yeah, absolute from between the circles. They
- 7:02Speaker 1: just got and continue to do their job. Tabor too,
- 7:04Speaker 1: and they just continue to be the foot soldiers.
- 7:07Speaker 4: They do that line, the dirty work Tabor person phrase
- 7:11Speaker 4: you oh the night. They just give you an honest effort.
- 7:14Speaker 4: They're really really hard to play against. I trust them
- 7:18Speaker 4: out there against any line that another opponent might throw
- 7:21Speaker 4: at us. They just they play the game the right way.
- 7:25Speaker 1: You had a lot of speed last year. As the
- 7:29Speaker 1: speed increased team wise this year from a skating standpoint.
- 7:35Speaker 4: I would it certainly hasn't decreased. So I think, you know,
- 7:40Speaker 4: when guys that have taken that jump, you know, when
- 7:45Speaker 4: you're a freshman, sometimes you don't play as fast as
- 7:48Speaker 4: you're capable because you're still trying to learn a new system.
- 7:52Speaker 4: Now that those guys know the system pretty well, I
- 7:55Speaker 4: think they're playing faster. So I would say this team
- 7:58Speaker 4: is probably a bit quicker than last year.
- 8:00Speaker 3: Your team. What about special teams? You're happy where that
- 8:03Speaker 3: where that's at at the school.
- 8:04Speaker 4: You know we I thought our penalty kill was outstanding,
- 8:07Speaker 4: uh against Long Island, and then you know, we got
- 8:10Speaker 4: a big power play goal to get us started. And
- 8:13Speaker 4: I thought that power play was dangerous both games as well.
- 8:16Speaker 4: But was that tat goal that tatchoal Yeah, shot it
- 8:20Speaker 4: from the flank, went five hole and uh, but we
- 8:23Speaker 4: had some really good chances besides that.
- 8:25Speaker 3: Yeah, puck wooman good.
- 8:26Speaker 4: It was excellent.
- 8:26Speaker 3: Yeah good. All right, we'll take a break.
- 8:28Speaker 1: We'll come back and uh more with cav little later
- 8:30Speaker 1: on it'll be Karlin Dezayne and Brendan Dumpy as The
- 8:33Speaker 1: Yukon Hockey Coaches Show continues life from Bear Spokehouse Barbecue
- 8:36Speaker 1: here on Lierfield to stay with us,
