- 0:52Hit that notifier.
- 0:53We're doing a ton of these interviews.
- 0:55And the only way you know
- 0:56when they're happening is
- 0:57to hit that little bell on
- 0:59YouTube so that you know
- 1:01they're coming up.
- 1:02And we're just taking a
- 1:03short break for the CrossFit Games,
- 1:04and we'll be back at it on
- 1:05the other side of that as well.
- 1:07So, Kevin, we were talking beforehand.
- 1:10You're an Indiana guy.
- 1:12Yes, sir.
- 1:12Born and raised in Indiana?
- 1:15Yes, I was.
- 1:17Always thought I was going
- 1:17to get out of this place
- 1:20and traveling around and
- 1:22trying to look for my what
- 1:24I perceived to have been my community.
- 1:26I kind of recognized that I
- 1:28liked traveling around.
- 1:30And so I decided when I was
- 1:33a little bit younger to
- 1:34just kind of hunker down,
- 1:36stay as a home base in
- 1:37Indiana and just try to
- 1:38travel around and see what
- 1:40the world had going on out there and
- 1:42little inexpensive here as
- 1:44far as living is concerned.
- 1:45I had a whole kind of
- 1:46network built up around
- 1:48myself as a business and
- 1:52was fortunate enough to be
- 1:53able to do a little bit of
- 1:54traveling and just come
- 1:56back and do what I had to
- 1:57do for work and just
- 2:02optimizing my perception of
- 2:05like CrossFit is
- 2:08as a whole, not just a sport.
- 2:11And so coming into the sport was very,
- 2:14like,
- 2:15recognizing the methodology of the
- 2:17sport was not at all what I
- 2:18thought it did not end up
- 2:20being what I thought it would be.
- 2:22I thought it was going to be
- 2:23just really light barbells and, you know,
- 2:25flipping tires.
- 2:27And I'd never thought I was
- 2:28going to lift heavy weights again.
- 2:30So but I liked the idea of
- 2:32being a very well rounded
- 2:33individual inside the gym
- 2:35and trying to learn all the different
- 2:37things there were to still
- 2:38learn within a gym coming
- 2:39from kind of a global gym background.
- 2:43And, uh, the,
- 2:46the life that I lived outside
- 2:47of the gym was what I felt
- 2:49very well-rounded.
- 2:51And so it just kind of felt
- 2:52like a perfect fit for me.
- 2:53And so I integrated myself into it and now,
- 2:56um, a little heavy on the, uh,
- 2:59the sports side of CrossFit
- 3:00rather than the entire
- 3:01methodology of the well-rounded lifestyle,
- 3:04I think.
- 3:06So looking back through your
- 3:08Instagram and some things I
- 3:10found on the internet,
- 3:12you've dabbled in weightlifting.
- 3:15And you were telling me
- 3:16before we went on the air
- 3:17that when you lived in South Bend,
- 3:19that you actually brought
- 3:21CrossFit to a powerlifting gym.
- 3:24Yeah.
- 3:25So I kind of separated from
- 3:27the CrossFit gym that I was
- 3:28at when I was living in
- 3:29South Bend and started
- 3:31training on my own and
- 3:33brought my equipment into CrossFit.
- 3:36gym that was primarily a
- 3:37powerlifting gym and uh it
- 3:40was it was nice to kind of
- 3:43have my little corner of a
- 3:45gym um I had a training
- 3:47partner that I trained with
- 3:48but it was not a crossfit
- 3:49gym at all we were doing
- 3:51mayhem programming and uh
- 3:53you know just very single
- 3:57focus driven towards
- 3:59qualifying for the games
- 4:00last year is kind of what
- 4:03brought upon getting that
- 4:04set up and I had a little
- 4:07bit of a mishap with a
- 4:07video last year which kept
- 4:09me from doing that so I had
- 4:11a workout that I won and my
- 4:14lockout looked like this
- 4:16for my shoulder overhead my
- 4:17elbows were out of the
- 4:18picture and so that was a
- 4:22big mishap last year but
- 4:24Last year I was very focused
- 4:26on qualifying for the
- 4:26CrossFit Games and I was very fit.
- 4:29This year I feel like I'm
- 4:30kind of running on residual
- 4:31fitness because the changes
- 4:33that have come upon me
- 4:35within the last year of
- 4:38work and my living
- 4:41situation as I moved from
- 4:42South Bend over to Fort
- 4:43Wayne and changed jobs.
- 4:46I do not have the general
- 4:47output that I used to have daily.
- 4:49So
- 4:52kind of everything has,
- 4:53I've been very affected in
- 4:55the gym and in my recovery
- 4:58in that I'm used to having
- 4:59a particular level of
- 5:01output throughout my day
- 5:03that kind of keeps me warm
- 5:05and keeps my body kind of moving.
- 5:07I don't have that same output now.
- 5:09And when I did have that output,
- 5:12I would go into the gym and
- 5:13I would give it 100%.
- 5:13I don't warm up.
- 5:16I just go in and ready to be
- 5:18a wrecking ball, go 100 miles an hour.
- 5:21And I do that now and the
- 5:23recovery is not so great
- 5:25because I don't have that
- 5:26general just movement throughout the day.
- 5:29So my base isn't the same as it once was.
- 5:33So I've got to start
- 5:34learning to change my training,
- 5:36change my diet.
- 5:38There's a lot of changes
- 5:38that are happening for me.
- 5:40So it's been very interesting this year.
- 5:44So Jay Burch, Judge Jumson,
- 5:45would Kevin say that the
- 5:47sport of CrossFit is
- 5:48different than the training CrossFit?
- 5:51I think so.
- 5:52I have a little bit of
- 5:57contempt for the sport of CrossFit.
- 6:00Just like personally,
- 6:01my internal dialogue is
- 6:03that the sport of CrossFit
- 6:07it's very privileged to be
- 6:11able to compete at the
- 6:12sport of CrossFit because
- 6:14it takes a lot of time.
- 6:15And it really is about how
- 6:17much time you can devote to
- 6:19the sport of CrossFit.
- 6:20For me, you know,
- 6:22there might be other people.
- 6:23I feel like I'm more of a
- 6:24talent than somebody who
- 6:26has more talent than,
- 6:29like actual putting in the work.
- 6:31I don't feel like I'm putting in the work.
- 6:33And I think a lot of people
- 6:34probably feel that way that
- 6:35are competitive.
- 6:36They don't feel like they're
- 6:37putting in enough work.
- 6:39But I feel like I don't put
- 6:40in enough work to be the
- 6:42best of the best.
- 6:44And I feel like it's a gross
- 6:47privilege to be able to put
- 6:49in enough work
- 6:51to do what it takes to be at
- 6:52the top of the field in
- 6:54CrossFit as a sport.
- 6:56But what I perceive the
- 6:58methodology to be across a lifestyle,
- 7:00I think if you're too
- 7:04integrated into the sport,
- 7:06then you may be kind of
- 7:08lacking elsewhere.
- 7:10And that that's just for me.
- 7:12That's not maybe not for everybody,
- 7:13but I feel that sport is kind of like
- 7:17The sport of CrossFit in
- 7:20life is kind of like being
- 7:22a good weightlifter in
- 7:24CrossFit versus maybe being
- 7:27just good at weightlifting
- 7:28and not good at gymnastics, right?
- 7:30So I feel like it's a huge
- 7:32privilege to be able to be
- 7:35Training to compete at the
- 7:36sport of CrossFit and to be
- 7:39able to compete with the
- 7:40best of the best.
- 7:41It is a privilege.
- 7:42So I'm honored to be able to
- 7:44be in a position to be doing this,
- 7:47but I don't think that it
- 7:50is for everybody for sure.
- 7:53I think one general theme
- 7:54that I've gotten through
- 7:55these interviews is that
- 7:58every athlete feels torn in
- 7:59the master's division
- 8:01because you have other obligations,
- 8:03whether it be children,
- 8:04whether it be a job, whether, you know,
- 8:07a profession of some sort,
- 8:09everybody feels torn.
- 8:10And I've been told like,
- 8:12it almost makes you feel
- 8:13like you're average at
- 8:14everything because you don't,
- 8:15you can't focus on any one
- 8:17thing because as you get older,
- 8:19you just have different obligations.
- 8:21You can't do this as your career.
- 8:23For sure.
- 8:25Yeah.
- 8:25And that's kind of like with the field,
- 8:29I feel like where the field
- 8:31that's going to the masters
- 8:32games as incredible as the
- 8:36best of the best that are
- 8:37going to be there are,
- 8:38I like to think of it as a
- 8:40representation of what's
- 8:41possible within a aging body,
- 8:46within a community that's united, um,
- 8:51So I like to look at it as a whole,
- 8:52and I'm really looking
- 8:54forward to just going and
- 8:56having like this year in particular,
- 8:58just trying to enjoy myself,
- 9:00trying to make friends,
- 9:02trying to build upon the
- 9:03community I already have.
- 9:05You know, I've got
- 9:06at least five or six buddies
- 9:08that I'm going to be
- 9:08competing with in my
- 9:09division alone and I know
- 9:11other people that'll be
- 9:12there in other divisions
- 9:13that I've built
- 9:14relationships with that are
- 9:15lifelong lasting
- 9:16relationships daily
- 9:18communication relationships
- 9:20um with a lot of people
- 9:21that'll be there so the the
- 9:23relationships the um you
- 9:26know the community that's
- 9:26what it's all about and uh
- 9:29In consideration of this
- 9:32particular interview,
- 9:32I do not have children,
- 9:35but I can imagine if I did,
- 9:39my focus would be trying to
- 9:42use this as a place to set
- 9:46an example for the kids,
- 9:48because that's what it's all about.
- 9:52When I was a kid,
- 9:52if I had this kind of
- 9:54structure and this kind of discipline,
- 9:57as a part of my lifestyle growing up,
- 9:59or even within view of my
- 10:01lifestyle growing up, you know,
- 10:04it would have made such an impact.
- 10:06And, you know,
- 10:07I'd like to be able to be
- 10:09inspirational to somebody
- 10:11who has the world left to offer.
- 10:16So I'm going to jump in.
- 10:18Jay Birch has a follow-up
- 10:20question to his question.
- 10:21As with that said,
- 10:23what percentage of your
- 10:23training is centered around strength?
- 10:26you're from your Instagram.
- 10:27You're a strong, strong dude.
- 10:29Yeah.
- 10:29So I am,
- 10:31I'm very strong and that's kind of
- 10:34like my, that's my, um, ace in the hole,
- 10:40you know, like I have the ability on in,
- 10:43in the world scale to be a top five, um,
- 10:47athlete at anything that's
- 10:49got a one rep max or that's
- 10:53low volume gymnastics and
- 10:55high volume barbell.
- 10:56So I'm very, I enjoy the barbell.
- 11:02I've always been very strong.
- 11:05My
- 11:06my clean in particular I
- 11:07have very good technique
- 11:09with my clean my snatch not
- 11:11so much but as far as a
- 11:14percentage based I
- 11:16generally like to start a
- 11:18training session with
- 11:20squatting cleaning a heavy
- 11:23barbell I just like to get
- 11:24started that way as my
- 11:25warm-up for the workout and uh and it's
- 11:30it's kind of taken over from my actual,
- 11:33what I perceive to be fitness.
- 11:34There was a time when I
- 11:36thought like I never wanted
- 11:37to be slower than a six minute mile.
- 11:41And now that I'm training on
- 11:41the track again,
- 11:42I'm realizing like I've
- 11:43kind of fallen way off of
- 11:45what was my once upon a
- 11:47time kind of like benchmark for, okay,
- 11:50I'm fit.
- 11:51Uh, I don't have that.
- 11:52My, my mile time is slowing down,
- 11:54I think so quite a bit from
- 11:56when I was a kid.
- 11:58um but my clean is kind of
- 12:00like my claim to fame so uh
- 12:03so I i spend about an
- 12:05hour's worth of slow
- 12:07warm-up into a squat in a
- 12:09weightlifting session and
- 12:11then my metcons with the
- 12:13mayhem programming that we
- 12:14do I really like the
- 12:16interval training so super
- 12:17high output rest recover
- 12:20super high output
- 12:21Those are my jams right now.
- 12:24I'm not in a I'm the
- 12:26heaviest I've been in a long time.
- 12:28My lifestyle has changed to
- 12:30to make it very difficult
- 12:31for me to mitigate that.
- 12:33And I haven't prioritized that so much.
- 12:36But so it's my own fault.
- 12:38But the the high body weight,
- 12:42gymnastic endurance
- 12:43workouts are just not as
- 12:44good as they once were for me.
- 12:46Whereas when I came into CrossFit,
- 12:48that was my biggest thing.
- 12:49I kind of stepped away from
- 12:51heavy weightlifting.
- 12:52But I've always just been a very strong,
- 12:54very strong athlete.
- 12:55So I'm not too concerned
- 12:58with losing that while I
- 13:01try to hit the track to do
- 13:03running workouts for the next month.
- 13:06So this is not your first
- 13:07time to the CrossFit Games.
- 13:08You qualified in 2018 and went that year.
- 13:13What was that experience like,
- 13:14and how are you going to
- 13:16change this year's –
- 13:19this year's event and for you personally?
- 13:25For me personally, well, the event itself,
- 13:28as far as how much I enjoy the workouts,
- 13:31that's going to be dictated
- 13:32by the programming.
- 13:33So the programming may kind of affect me.
- 13:36I'm not the most
- 13:37well-rounded athlete right now.
- 13:40So I'm really hoping we get
- 13:41some heavy barbells and we
- 13:44don't have a workout with
- 13:45500 toes to bar or 500
- 13:47burpee box jump overs,
- 13:51or 1,000 box step ups, for that matter.
- 13:55But so the programming is
- 13:56going to dictate how much
- 13:58real fun I'm able to have.
- 14:00But I'm going to try to
- 14:02separate myself from the
- 14:03programming and enjoy the experience.
- 14:08Knowing in 2018,
- 14:09it was a little
- 14:11underwhelming how much
- 14:12attention was given to our divisions.
- 14:17And this year,
- 14:19it's just totally focused on us.
- 14:21So that is,
- 14:22I'm looking forward to see how
- 14:24that feels different.
- 14:27I've been to Masters competitions.
- 14:28I've been to, you know,
- 14:30competitions that are
- 14:31before there were Masters divisions.
- 14:33And I don't, well, I don't know,
- 14:34with Granite Games,
- 14:36did Granite Games have Masters divisions?
- 14:37I'm not sure.
- 14:38But I've done all,
- 14:39I've done all the competitions.
- 14:42And I'm really curious to
- 14:44see how this one's going to
- 14:46be run and how the
- 14:48competitors are going to show up.
- 14:50I really hope that everybody
- 14:53tries to have a good time
- 14:55and treats it kind of like Wadapalooza,
- 14:56like we're all here to just
- 14:58have a good time and do our best.
- 15:00But I'm sure there's going
- 15:00to be Terminators out there
- 15:02that are just ready to
- 15:04just single-minded, just wreck shop,
- 15:06and that's okay too.
- 15:07But I'm looking to try to
- 15:09smile out there and just do my best.
- 15:14I think what's cool about
- 15:15the Masters Division is
- 15:16everybody's trying to win.
- 15:18You don't go to a
- 15:19competition just to do it.
- 15:21You put a lot of work in to get there.
- 15:23Most of these athletes have.
- 15:26But yet the camaraderie and
- 15:28the support from one
- 15:30another is unmatched at any
- 15:32other competition I've been to.
- 15:35Yeah.
- 15:36Yeah.
- 15:36And we're kind of like a
- 15:38class that's going to stick together for.
- 15:41Right.
- 15:41For the rest of the for the
- 15:43for the rest of the every
- 15:46the entire rest of our lives.
- 15:47I mean, everybody in my division right now,
- 15:49I know I know another 10,
- 15:5115 guys that had they
- 15:53focused on it could probably have
- 15:55would have beat me in the qualification.
- 15:58I'm coming in in 40th right now.
- 16:00So I got nowhere to go but up.
- 16:02So I got not a whole lot of that.
- 16:04That's a nice place to be.
- 16:05Actually,
- 16:05I was a little distraught
- 16:08initially as to where I was
- 16:09going to fall if I was even
- 16:10going to fall inside the cut line.
- 16:13But that's a nice place for me to be.
- 16:16So about that 40th, because they took 40.
- 16:20So you were the last guy in.
- 16:22Yeah.
- 16:23How was that two and a half
- 16:25week wait for them to
- 16:28finalize the leaderboard?
- 16:30Oh, it's always frustrating.
- 16:32The leaderboard process is
- 16:34always so frustrating.
- 16:36And, you know, it's hard to...
- 16:44whether or not you really
- 16:46care everybody cares
- 16:48whether they're going to
- 16:49make it right but um I
- 16:53don't feel I'm able to
- 16:56compete for the podium
- 16:58right now which that's a
- 17:00tough place to be because
- 17:01last year I felt like I was
- 17:03able to compete for the
- 17:03podium and uh so that made
- 17:06it very a little easier in
- 17:09if I don't make the cut
- 17:10line that's okay right but
- 17:14we've gotta keep each other honest.
- 17:16And I feel that I'm able to
- 17:19go out there and I can win events.
- 17:21I'm able to win events.
- 17:23So from that perspective,
- 17:27I wanna show up and I want
- 17:28to force somebody else to
- 17:31try to beat me at a clean ladder, right?
- 17:36So in that regard,
- 17:37like I wanted to be there
- 17:40because I felt like I have
- 17:41something to offer this competition.
- 17:45And whether you – this isn't
- 17:49your – so what you're
- 17:50telling me is this isn't
- 17:51the most prepared you've
- 17:52been going into a season.
- 17:54No.
- 17:55But yet when you finish the
- 17:58semifinals and you're in 40th place,
- 18:00now you have a taste that
- 18:03you could be going to the
- 18:03games even not at your best.
- 18:05And at that point, you had to want it,
- 18:07right?
- 18:08So then that
- 18:09two-and-a-half-week wait is just brutal.
- 18:12It is.
- 18:12It is.
- 18:13is and and you know there's
- 18:15a lot of uh there's a lot
- 18:18of screwy stuff going on on
- 18:20the leaderboard with you
- 18:21know knowing that people
- 18:23might be doing things that
- 18:25are less than um less than
- 18:29we expect out of them you
- 18:31know right now so just
- 18:35knowing that it could be a
- 18:37very different leaderboard
- 18:38under a lot of other circumstances,
- 18:41that does make it difficult.
- 18:43It makes it difficult for a
- 18:44lot of people that are just
- 18:45outside the cusp.
- 18:46I've got people that are
- 18:48just as well deserved to be
- 18:50there as anyone else that
- 18:51are sitting right outside the cut line.
- 18:53And it's very, it's very difficult to see.
- 18:57And so it makes you,
- 18:59it makes me want to show up
- 19:01and do my best and to really be able to
- 19:05I don't want anybody else to
- 19:06feel like they should have
- 19:09been there or they would have beat me.
- 19:13though they they can beat me
- 19:14in particular events but I
- 19:17i don't want to show
- 19:18disrespect to the athletes
- 19:20that didn't make it by not
- 19:21showing up the best that I
- 19:22can from this point on and
- 19:24so I'm I'm just doing my
- 19:25best to uh to try to show
- 19:27up and to win events
- 19:29there's there's events I
- 19:30can win and I want those
- 19:31ones there's events I'm
- 19:32going to get my butt kicked
- 19:33at and I'm going to get my
- 19:35butt kicked in some regards
- 19:36but um yeah it changes it
- 19:40changes the focus for sure
- 19:43In a long weekend,
- 19:44winning 100 points in an
- 19:45event is massive.
- 19:49If you win an event,
- 19:50that gives you so much
- 19:51buffer to the other events, right?
- 19:54And if you can win two,
- 19:57there's people that won't
- 19:58finish the weekend with 200 points.
- 20:00Yeah.
- 20:00Yeah.
- 20:03You know,
- 20:03just middling throughout the weekend.
- 20:06It's a crazy dynamic with 40
- 20:07people on the leaderboard.
- 20:09This is the first year the
- 20:10Masters will have that.
- 20:12Like it's been 10 or 20.
- 20:14And so you don't get a lot
- 20:15of fluctuation because
- 20:16nobody can fall too far.
- 20:18But you can this year.
- 20:20For sure.
- 20:20Yeah,
- 20:20it's going to be the leaderboard is
- 20:22going to be interesting.
- 20:24I've dabbled with the idea of,
- 20:26I've got some friends that
- 20:27try not to look at the
- 20:28leaderboard at all.
- 20:29I've dabbled at,
- 20:30would I be capable of doing that?
- 20:33It'd be nice to not look at
- 20:34the leaderboard and just go
- 20:35out and give it your best.
- 20:37I'm sure that I won't be able to do that.
- 20:39But yeah,
- 20:41the amount of athletes there and
- 20:44everybody that's going to
- 20:45be there has got...
- 20:47there's a lot of people that
- 20:48are amazing at everything,
- 20:50but there's going to be, you know,
- 20:52everybody's also got one
- 20:53punch power at a particular
- 20:55workout and you just don't
- 20:56know what's going to happen.
- 20:58So I've kind of,
- 21:00my focus in when I know
- 21:02that I don't have the
- 21:03ability to be training to
- 21:04be a hundred percent
- 21:05well-rounded is that strength.
- 21:07I want that one punch knockout in the,
- 21:10in a, you know,
- 21:11weightlifting workout
- 21:12deadlift and double unders
- 21:14and handstand walking or
- 21:15something or you know one
- 21:16rep max clean I want that
- 21:18one punch power because uh
- 21:20when when that 5k and 5k
- 21:24run 1k swim comes up I'm
- 21:27I'm gonna be having a rough
- 21:29time compared to those athletes
- 21:32Yeah.
- 21:32Jay Burch asks, off topic,
- 21:34but what is that pick on
- 21:35your CrossFit profile?
- 21:37Chicken and a donut?
- 21:39Oh, yeah.
- 21:40It's like, yeah,
- 21:40chicken and waffles type
- 21:42thing with a donut on there.
- 21:45There was some meal that I
- 21:48had that I thought would
- 21:49just be kind of a funny thing.
- 21:51That was years ago.
- 21:52I thought it would be a
- 21:53funny thing to be on a CrossFit profile.
- 21:55Yeah.
- 21:57Chicken and waffles is one
- 21:58of my guilty pleasures.
- 21:59Oh man.
- 22:00It's been, it's been a long time, but yeah,
- 22:02it's amazing.
- 22:03Well, speaking of that,
- 22:05it appears that like how
- 22:07you get your relaxation and
- 22:08your decompression is to travel.
- 22:11Um,
- 22:11your Instagram is full of like really
- 22:13cool pics and really cool places.
- 22:15Um,
- 22:16what is your bucket list place to visit
- 22:20that?
- 22:20I have not been correct.
- 22:23Um,
- 22:24Constantinople, Istanbul.
- 22:26I've not been to Istanbul.
- 22:27So I'd really like to go there.
- 22:29Um, spend a little bit of time.
- 22:31Uh,
- 22:32a lot of my trips to Europe revolve
- 22:34around Prague.
- 22:35I love Prague.
- 22:36It's my favorite place in the world.
- 22:38Um, got a lot of friends there.
- 22:39And so I'll try to start or
- 22:41end a trip there.
- 22:44Um, but yeah, Istanbul is,
- 22:46is high on the list.
- 22:48And, uh,
- 22:51Yeah, I mean,
- 22:53there's a lot outside of that,
- 22:54but that one jumps out.
- 22:56For some reason, I want to go to Krakow,
- 22:58Poland,
- 22:58just because it's so Gothic from
- 23:00the pictures that I've seen.
- 23:01I like the extreme Gothic architecture.
- 23:06But I've not, yeah, there's, I mean,
- 23:09everywhere.
- 23:09I want to see everything at some point.
- 23:13Yeah, I've seen pictures from London.
- 23:14I've seen pictures from
- 23:15either Central or South America.
- 23:19You know, lots of Europe.
- 23:21It's really cool that you get to do that.
- 23:24And you can tell it's
- 23:26definitely a love in your life.
- 23:28Yeah.
- 23:29Yeah, it's been a while.
- 23:30The 2020 thing kind of changed everything.
- 23:33Life just got super busy for me.
- 23:37And right now,
- 23:38my current work situation
- 23:39involves a lot of travel.
- 23:40So travel doesn't sound so fun to me.
- 23:44I'm not really able to
- 23:45separate myself from work
- 23:46like I have been in the past.
- 23:48And I also have two dogs now
- 23:50that are my best little buddies.
- 23:52And I have a tough time
- 23:54thinking about being away for three weeks,
- 23:56you know,
- 23:57so which is kind of the way that
- 24:00I would like to do it generally.
- 24:02So I've considered at some
- 24:04point doing like a
- 24:06getting a mobile home kind
- 24:07of thing to travel around
- 24:09and be able to take them
- 24:12with me and go on kind of
- 24:15North American excursions to see natural.
- 24:20I like cities.
- 24:21I like walkable old cities.
- 24:24I like kind of super historic, you know,
- 24:32like the Chichen Itza type stuff.
- 24:37But walking the cities of
- 24:38Prague and London and those
- 24:39kind of things, those are the best.
- 24:43Jaber asks, any urge to go to Antarctica?
- 24:48I have the urge to know
- 24:49exactly what's going on in Antarctica.
- 24:52But I don't really want to
- 24:53go there outside of
- 24:54learning what's really
- 24:55happening down there.
- 24:56There's something happening down there.
- 25:01So what kind of dogs do you have?
- 25:04Standard poodles.
- 25:06So a lot of my time.
- 25:11Um, so you,
- 25:13you told me before we went on air, you,
- 25:14you took a new job,
- 25:16you moved to Fort Wayne.
- 25:17It, it messed up your training schedule.
- 25:20Yeah.
- 25:20Is, is,
- 25:21is the next thing after the games
- 25:23to figure out how to
- 25:25balance the new job with
- 25:28your training schedule and
- 25:29figure out how to get back
- 25:30to a more well-rounded athlete?
- 25:34Uh,
- 25:35I would prefer to say a more
- 25:37well-rounded life.
- 25:41My inner athlete is going to
- 25:43be best served by my lowest
- 25:46stress situation.
- 25:47So I think that has played a
- 25:49big factor in my personal
- 25:52ability to maintain the
- 25:55level of health that I have is
- 25:59mitigating stress throughout
- 26:00my life and recognizing
- 26:03stress factors that are
- 26:04incoming and trying to
- 26:07mitigate those has been
- 26:09kind of like a super high priority.
- 26:13So if I can learn to
- 26:17navigate the new stresses
- 26:18that I have in my life,
- 26:20it's going to make me a better athlete.
- 26:23I think that's an amen from
- 26:25all of us in this world.
- 26:28Getting rid of those outside
- 26:29stresses is key for all of us,
- 26:32athlete or not.
- 26:35When are you getting to Birmingham?
- 26:36Are you going in early that
- 26:37week or are you taking anybody with you?
- 26:38Yeah.
- 26:39I have not yet booked my travel.
- 26:43I should probably do that.
- 26:45I think I'm gonna come in on
- 26:46Tuesday night.
- 26:47I'm kind of affected by I'm
- 26:49glad I a recent trip I did
- 26:50just kind of jetlag the heck out of me.
- 26:53And I have been getting more like,
- 26:58I get that kind of edema
- 26:59thing that happens in the air.
- 27:01Start I've been, you know,
- 27:02in just changes.
- 27:03That's something that's been
- 27:04happening to me is like my feet swell,
- 27:07stuff like that.
- 27:07So
- 27:09I think I was planning on
- 27:10just coming in on Wednesday,
- 27:11but I think I'm going to
- 27:13come in on Tuesday and give
- 27:15myself that extra day.
- 27:16At least it'll be the one,
- 27:18just the one way trip to get there.
- 27:19I'm used to kind of these,
- 27:21the work that I do now,
- 27:22I've got round trips where I'll be,
- 27:24you know,
- 27:24flying out on Monday night and
- 27:26coming home on Tuesday night.
- 27:28And that round trip just
- 27:29kind of like rolling really messes me up.
- 27:32So, yeah.
- 27:34I don't anticipate the jet
- 27:35lag to be as bad as what
- 27:36I'm used to dealing with as
- 27:37far as getting back to
- 27:38training after a round trip.
- 27:41But I think I'm going to
- 27:42come in on Tuesday night
- 27:43and then just kind of do a
- 27:45little bit of movement on
- 27:46Wednesday and we'll see
- 27:48what the workouts that we
- 27:49have in store are.
- 27:53I'm not one to like stay
- 27:54warm or need to like do a
- 27:57bunch of training the day before.
- 27:59But that's the kind of thing
- 28:00I need to learn to change.
- 28:02I just did a competition
- 28:04this weekend that was a
- 28:05team comp kind of local
- 28:07thing at our gym and
- 28:09literally didn't warm up at all.
- 28:11Jumped into the first
- 28:12workout and kind of
- 28:13strained my groin a little bit.
- 28:14So I got to warm up, got to stay active.
- 28:19So I'm going to come in on
- 28:20Tuesday and try to get a
- 28:22little movement in on Wednesday instead.
- 28:24Yeah, that edema thing is nuts.
- 28:26I get that as well when I fly.
- 28:28And I'm flying to the games this week,
- 28:30and the whole first 24
- 28:32hours is just getting that
- 28:33fluid off my body, get moving around,
- 28:36get your skin elevated,
- 28:38and just recover from the flight.
- 28:41But I'm a lot older than you.
- 28:43How old are you?
- 28:45I'm 54.
- 28:46Wow, I would not have guessed.
- 28:50Well, thanks.
- 28:52CrossFit's an amazing thing, isn't it?
- 28:54Yeah.
- 28:56What about yourself?
- 28:57When are you getting into Birmingham?
- 28:58Are you going there, I'd imagine?
- 29:01We're going to be down there.
- 29:02We're going to film a
- 29:03behind-the-scenes documentary.
- 29:05That week,
- 29:06we got permission to have all
- 29:07access in the warm-up area
- 29:09and the corrals and to just
- 29:11film the chats,
- 29:12the camaraderie that goes
- 29:14on back there with all the athletes.
- 29:17So Ellie Hiller and myself
- 29:19will be filming that,
- 29:20and we're going to have
- 29:21some videographers out on
- 29:22the floor getting some of
- 29:24the action there,
- 29:24and we're going to put it
- 29:25together as a multiple-part documentary.
- 29:27Thanks.
- 29:30So we're coming in.
- 29:31I think I'm leaving here on Tuesday night,
- 29:33probably stop.
- 29:34I'm driving, probably halfway,
- 29:37and I will come in
- 29:38Wednesday morning and get
- 29:40everything set up, show up for check-in,
- 29:42get some of that documented, and then,
- 29:46yeah, be there all weekend.
- 29:48Well, I will see you down there.
- 29:51You don't happen to have any
- 29:52insight into the workouts yet, do you?
- 29:55I know nothing, man.
- 29:57It's, it's a start.
- 29:58Like it's,
- 29:59these people are so busy that
- 30:00are running this thing.
- 30:02Just getting like a text
- 30:04through and a response is, is tough.
- 30:07So I don't know anything really at all.
- 30:10Yeah.
- 30:10Yeah.
- 30:10We're looking forward to, uh, like I said,
- 30:12I'm, uh, you had Josh Boonstra on here.
- 30:15I watched his interview and he's,
- 30:16he's part of a chat group
- 30:18that we've got together that kind of,
- 30:20we help keep each other on track.
- 30:22And, uh, so we want to make sure,
- 30:26Any kind of insight we get,
- 30:27we're communicating it so
- 30:28everybody's got the info
- 30:29and there's no insider trading going on.
- 30:32Yeah.
- 30:33Got to stop these leaks in CrossFit.
- 30:35It needs to be a fair playing field.
- 30:37For sure.
- 30:39Um, so Kevin,
- 30:41so thank you so much for doing this.
- 30:43Really can't wait to meet
- 30:44you in person down there
- 30:45and document the weekend.
- 30:48Everybody in the chat.
- 30:48Thank you for being here.
- 30:49You guys make this show what it is.
- 30:52Don't forget to like,
- 30:52and subscribe to the
- 30:53channel and we'll see
- 30:54everybody here next time on
- 30:55the Clydesdale media podcast.
- 30:58Appreciate it.
- 30:59Bye guys.
