- 0:00Vox LIturgica: The proppers of the day according to the 1962 Roman Missal. The twelfth Sunday after Pentecost, August 16 in the year of our Lord 2026.
- 0:21Of this Sunday's mass, Don Gaspar Lefevre writes the following, Having been initiated into supernatural life by baptism, strengthened and perfected in this life by confirmation, whose efficaciousness the feast of Pentecost has celebrated, the Church reminds us of the duty of Christian charity, which derives therefrom. She speaks to us of the law of Moses, which was not wanting in a certain splendor, and of the law of Christ, which is its perfect development. As is relayed in the epistle, if already the greatest of the commandments of the ancient alliance is the love of God and that of one's neighbor, it is necessarily the same divine and perfected love which the new alliance demands of us.
- 1:16As the Gospel says, let us beware of the pharisaical interpretation of the law which would reduce our religious duties to a few outward practices. The letter kills, says St. Paul, and the spirit quickens. Neither the Mosaic Law nor the Gospel separate the love of God from that we owe to our neighbor. In its origin, it is a supernatural love.
- 1:50For it proceeds from the Holy Ghost and in its object, which is the person of our brothers. The Jews only considered as their neighbors the people of their race. And the parable of the Good Samaritan shows us that our neighbor is every man, known or unknown, friend or enemy, to whom we are united by the bonds of charity, taught us by Jesus in healing our wounds. The neighbor of this wounded Jew is not the man of his race since Jews and Samaritans were hereditary rivals, but the man who bins charitably over him to help him. Union in Christ, which will make us love even those who hate us and pardon those who have wronged us because God is in them or may come to them.
- 2:47That is the true love of one's neighbor. Made divine by grace we must imitate our heavenly father who appeased by the prayer of Moses a figure of the Savior, only overwhelmed with benefits the people that had offended him. For the commentary on Saint Joachim, father of the mother of God, who is commemorated today, along with a timeline of the changes to that feast, see the episode for the pre 1955 propers linked below, where his feast, as a second class double takes precedence over the semi double Sunday. In the name of the father and of the son and of the Holy Ghost. Amen.
- 3:47The Introit. O God, come to my assistance. O Lord, make haste to help me. Let mine enemies be confounded and ashamed who seek my soul. Let them be turned backward and blush for shame who desire evils to me.
- 4:09Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost, as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be, through all ages of ages. Amen. O God, come to my assistance. O Lord, make haste to help me. Let mine enemies be confounded and ashamed who seek my soul.
- 4:39The Collect, let us pray. Almighty and merciful God, of whose gift it comes that thy faithful do unto thee true and laudable service, grant, we beseech thee, that we may run without stumbling toward the attainment of thy promises through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen. A commemoration of St. Joachim.
- 5:20O God, who of all thy saints didst choose the blessed Joachim to be father to the mother of thy son, grant we beseech thee that we who honor his memorial may evermore experience his patronage through the same Jesus Christ, thy Son, our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen. A lesson from the second letter of Saint Paul the Apostle to the Corinthians. Such, brethren, through Christ, is the confidence in which we make our appeal to God. Not that, left to ourselves, we are able to frame any thought as coming from ourselves.
- 6:17All our ability comes from God since it is He who has enabled us to promulgate His new law to men. It is a spiritual, not a written law. The written law inflicts death, whereas the spiritual law brings life. We know how that sentence of death engraved in writing upon stone was promulgated to men in a dazzling cloud, so that the people of Israel could not look Moses in the face for the brightness of it, although that brightness soon passed away. How much more dazzling then must be the brightness in which the spiritual law is promulgated to them.
- 7:07If there is a splendor in the proclamation of our guilt, there must be more splendor yet in the proclamation of our acquittal. The gradual. I will bless the Lord at all times. His praise shall ever be in my mouth. In the Lord shall my soul be praised.
- 7:32Let the meek hear and rejoice. Alleluia. Alleluia. O Lord, the God of my salvation, I have cried in the day and in the night before thee. Alleluia.
- 7:52A continuation of the Holy Gospel according to Luke. At that time, Jesus said to his disciples, Blessed are the eyes that see what you see. I tell you, there have been many prophets and kings who have longed to see what you see and never saw it, to hear what you hear and never heard it. It happened once that a lawyer rose up trying to put him to the test. Master, he said, what must I do to inherit eternal life?
- 8:32Jesus asked him, What is it that is written in the law? What is thy reading of it? And he answered, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with the love of thy whole heart, and thy whole soul, and thy whole strength, and thy whole mind, and thy neighbor as thyself. Thou hast answered right, he told him. Do this, and thou shalt find life.
- 9:07But he, to prove himself blameless, asked, And who is my neighbor? Jesus gave him his answer. A man who was on his way down from Jerusalem to Jericho fell in with robbers who stripped him and beat him and went off leaving him half dead. And a priest who chanced to be going down by the same road saw him there and passed by on the other side. And a Levite who came there saw him and passed by on the other side.
- 9:49But a certain Samaritan who was on his travels saw him and took pity at the sight. He went up to him and bound up his wounds, pouring oil and wine into them, and so mounted him upon his own beast, and brought him to an inn where he took care of him. And the next day he took out two silver pieces, which he gave to the innkeeper, and said, Take care of him, and on my way home I will give thee whatever else is owing to thee for thy pains. Which of these thinkest you, proved himself a neighbor to the man who had fallen in with robbers? And he said, He that showed mercy on him.
- 10:44Then Jesus said, Go thy way, and do likewise. The Offeratory Moses prayed in the sight of the Lord his God, and said, Why, O Lord, is thine indignation enkindled against thy people? Let the anger of thy mind cease. Remember Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, to whom thou didst swear to give a land flowing with milk and honey. And the Lord was appeased from doing the evil which he had spoken of doing against his people.
- 11:33The secret. Look graciously, we beseech thee, O Lord, upon the offerings which we lay upon Thy sacred altars, that they may obtain for us pardon and glory. A commemoration of St. Joachim. Receive most merciful God, the sacrifice which we offer thy majesty in honor of the holy patriarch Joachim, father of the Virgin Mary, that through his intercession with that of his spouse and of their most blessed child, we may become worthy to obtain perfect remission of our sins and everlasting glory through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, through all ages of ages.
- 12:34Amen. The preface of the Most Holy Trinity. Just it is and fitting, right in for our salvation, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks unto thee, O Holy Lord, Father Almighty, everlasting God, who together with thine only begotten Son and the Holy Ghost art one God, one Lord, not in the oneness of a single person, but in the trinity of one substance. For what we believe by thy revelation of thy glory, the same do we believe of thy son, the same of the Holy Ghost without difference or separation so that in confessing the true and eternal Godhead distinction in persons, unity in essence, and equality in majesty may be adored. In praise of which the angels and archangels, the cherubim also and Seraphim day by day exalt without end with one voice saying, holy, holy, holy, Lord God of hosts, the heavens and the earth are full of thy glory.
- 14:02Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. The communion. The earth shall be filled with the fruit of thy works, O Lord, that thou mayest bring bread out of the earth, and that wine may cheer the heart of man, that he may make the face cheerful with oil, and that bread may strengthen man's heart.
- 14:38The post communion, let us pray. May the holy reception of this mystery, we beseech thee, O Lord, restore us, and may it defend us under thy protection from all adversity through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, through all ages of ages. Amen. So, lives. The of the are we received, and by the interceding merits and prayers of blessed Joachim, the father of the mother of thy beloved son, our Lord Jesus Christ, we may deserve to share thy grace in the present and eternal glory in the future.
- 15:41Through the same Jesus Christ, thy son, our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the holy ghost. Amen. Thanks be to God.
- 16:12Saint Joachim, pray for us.
