- 0:52pair issues round table.
- 0:54I'm joined now by Abdu Ba, who is
- 0:56the senior vice president medical management and chief
- 0:59health equity officer at EmblemHealth.
- 1:01Abdu, thanks for being here. Would love to
- 1:03start off by having you introduce yourself and
- 1:05tell us a little bit more about your
- 1:06role.
- 1:07Thank you. Thank first of all, thank you
- 1:09for having me. So as you mentioned, my
- 1:10name is Abduba.
- 1:11I lead our population health and medical management
- 1:14area at EmblemHealth.
- 1:16EmblemHealth is a New York based health plan
- 1:18that serves roughly about 3,000,000 lives, And we
- 1:21have members in the commercial Medicare and Medicaid
- 1:24space
- 1:25and mostly located in the tri state metro
- 1:28New York area.
- 1:29Wonderful. Well, thank you for taking the time
- 1:31today. And let's start off talking about
- 1:34goals and growth for the rest of the
- 1:36year. So from improving member experience and expanding
- 1:39value based care to controlling costs,
- 1:42pay executives have ambitious growth goals for the
- 1:45rest of the year and as we look
- 1:47into the year ahead. So right now, what
- 1:49is your top priority, and how are you
- 1:51planning to get there?
- 1:53I think that's a great question. I think
- 1:54number 1, it's about controlling and managing ongoing
- 1:58health care costs.
- 1:59As you think about health care costs coming
- 2:01out of COVID, we're still seeing an increase
- 2:03in cost. In in addition to it, member
- 2:06experience and making sure that the members that
- 2:07we do have have a excellent experience starting
- 2:10with customer service, but also making sure that
- 2:13they're getting the services and the care that
- 2:15they need to be able to manage their
- 2:16health care needs.
- 2:18Absolutely. And at an industry level,
- 2:20how would you describe the biggest barriers to
- 2:22effectively serving and engaging members? And what opportunities
- 2:25do you see for large scale improvements, and
- 2:28how are you applying that to your current
- 2:29strategies?
- 2:30Yeah. I think there's a 2 tier answer.
- 2:32I think part 1 is engagement and being
- 2:35able to reach members
- 2:36the way the members wanna be reached. And
- 2:39as we think about different engagement strategies and
- 2:42the ability to reach a member is the
- 2:43number one barrier today. And as we think
- 2:46about advancement in technology, such as using AI
- 2:49and other tools, and being able to use
- 2:51digital channels will certainly help with engaging a
- 2:54broader population.
- 2:56And changing pace slightly to growing leaders.
- 3:00Keeping pace in today's dynamic health care landscape
- 3:03is challenging. So what is a piece of
- 3:05advice you'd share with peer leaders to grow
- 3:07their businesses and keep members top of mind?
- 3:09I think it's about building programs and solutions
- 3:13that serves your members' need, understanding your population,
- 3:16understanding the population, the community that you serve,
- 3:19and building programs, initiatives that,
- 3:22are tailored to that population need. Right? So
- 3:24if you have a a population that's high
- 3:26on diabetes,
- 3:27then you wanna make sure that you have,
- 3:29initiatives and program that are for diabetic members.
- 3:32Also, I think it's important
- 3:34to be innovative and creative as you think
- 3:37about solving
- 3:38SDOH and other social barriers, which are the
- 3:41invisible barriers today that prevents member from getting
- 3:44the care that they need.
- 3:46Well, Abdu, thank you for joining me today
- 3:48on the Becker's healthcare podcast and sharing these
- 3:51insights. Again, we are live at the 2024
- 3:53payer issues roundtable.
- 3:55Thank you.
